Big night at Knoxville sees the return of fans and a milestone for Johnny Gibson
KNOXVILLE, IA – June 12, 2020 – Kyle Larson’s last attempt at taking on the Outlaws two weeks ago saw 10-time World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz steal the win from him on the final lap.
In his return Friday night at Knoxville Raceway, Larson, again, found Schatz standing in the way of another victory. This time, he made sure the Fargo, ND driver was out of rage on the final lap to secure his first win at “The Sprint Car Capital of the World” during the first night of the Brownells Big Guns Bash doubleheader.
“It’s awesome,” Larson said in Victory Lane. “It’s a pleasure to drive for (car owner and crew chief) Paul Silva and everybody who helps out on this team.”
He had already accumulated three wins in four days with Silva while racing down south, before the night. That momentum carried over to the iconic half-mile track, where Larson and Silva struggled in their last two races there. They finished 10th when the Series returned to racing at the track in May and failed to qualify for the Knoxville Nationals last year.
This year, they’ve found their rhythm. Larson didn’t show it early on in the night, though. While David Gravel set Quick Time for the third time this year, Larson qualified seventh in his flight. He was able to make it up to second in his Drydene Heat Race, behind Gravel, but settled for a sixth-place finish in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash – won by Gravel.
When it came time for the 25-lap Feature, Gravel – who won the Knoxville race in May – and Schatz appeared to be the favorites. Gravel had dominated everything up until that point and Schatz’s speed improved as the night went on.
The Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing driver showed that in the opening laps of the Feature by taking the lead from Gravel on the second lap and driving away from the field.
Larson was putting on an impressive performance behind them, darting his way from sixth to third on the first lap. Five laps later, he worked his way around the outside of Gravel to take second. A caution on Lap 6 then put Larson on Schatz’s bumper.
On the restart, Larson launched ahead of Schatz to take the lead, but Rico Abreu flipped in Turn 2 before the lap was completed, giving Schatz the lead back. When the race went green, again, Schatz was ready for Larson. He had a two-car length lead on Larson by the time they exited Turn 2 and pulled away further the next corner.
Schatz looked to be in command of the race and on his way to another Knoxville win. However, the ever-adaptable Larson found a new line that cut Schatz’s lead from half a straightaway to nothing in about three laps.
“Before the first caution I could enter above the holes here in (Turn) one and diamond the corner off of (Turn) two and I felt like I could maintain with him (Schatz),” Larson said. “Once I got into second, Donny was still following the top and I was able to make that line work to get the run off of (Turn) three and pass him.”
Once he took the lead from Schatz with 15 laps to go, Larson ran to home base on a home run swing. Lap cars did little to slow him down. The only hinderance he faced was when his nose wing fell down on the final lap, giving him little downforce on the front of his car. It caused him to miss his marks, but they were tiny errors in the overall scope of the race. The Elk Grove, CA driver crossed the finish line 3.1 sec. ahead of Schatz, bringing the crowd of fans to their feet – Knoxville’s first time with fans at a World of Outlaws race this year – and giving Johnny Gibson a special memory for his 2,000th consecutive race.
“Knoxville is one of my favorite tracks,” Larson said. “Paul Silva has been working his butt off. I’ve been complaining to him a lot. But we’re a great team and like I said, it’s a pleasure to get to race for him.”
The win is Larson’s second World of Outlaws win of 2020 and 10th overall, tying him on the all-time wins list with Danny Smith and Joe Gaerte, who is the crew chief for Kyle Larson Racing.
While Schatz had to settle for second, the finish is his fifth top-five finish in a row.
“He just found a different line in (turns) one and two,” Schatz said. “I didn’t think it would stay that long, so I didn’t try it. You can’t be making any mistakes. But, if you’re going to make them, now is the time to do it. It was a real solid night.”
Gravel ended the night third and said he’s pleased with it considering Jason Johnson Racing brought out a new car for the event.
Carson Macedo, who drivers for Kyle Larson Racing, earned his second top-five of the season with a fourth-place finish.
Series points leader Brad Sweet had a rough night, finishing 12th – his first finish outside the top-10 this year. He wasn’t alone as Logan Schuchart had an engine fail in Qualifying and found himself having to use a provisional to start the Feature. He was able to charge from 25th to 13th, earning his the KSE Hard Charger award.
Sweet is now ahead of Schatz by eight points and Schuchart by 38.

Danny Dietrich leads all 30 to score All Star victory at Monarch Motor Speedway
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (June 12, 2020) - Improving one position over his Thursday night result at Southern Oklahoma Speedway, ‘Double-D’ Danny Dietrich nearly swept the entire evening program on Friday night at Monarch Motor Speedway, first earning victories during heat race and dash competition, then capping the Cometic Gasket Thunder Through The Plains presented by Hercules Tires showcase by leading all 30 circuits during the evening’s main event and scoring $5,000 in the process. For Dietrich, the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory was his first of the season, simultaneously increasing his career All Star win total to 12.
“My goal coming down here was to win at least one of these races. We were pretty close last night, so to get it done here tonight is pretty awesome,” Danny Dietrich said, driver of the Gary Kauffman Racing/Weikert’s Livestock/Sandoe’s Fruit Market’/Pace Performance/Big Cove Whitetail Trophy Hunts/Drop Of Ink Tattoo/Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC/Self Made/No. 48 sprint car. “It has been a pretty demanding week. Getting a win with the All Stars makes the work and the heat totally worth it. Hopefully we get to come back to this place and do it again next year.”
Earning the pole position by way of dash win, Danny Dietrich’s route to Monarch Motor Speedway victory lane was relatively unchallenged, first dealing with a pair of opening lap stoppages before the race could officially commence.
Immediately choosing the cushion over the bottom groove, Dietrich jumped to the early advantage, keeping fellow front row starter Cory Eliason at bay as the duo raced beyond the flagstand to complete the opening lap.
Continuing to zing the top of the speedway, Dietrich and Eliason met traffic for the first time on lap 12, thus allowing Eliason to close the gap on Dietrich ever so slightly. Traffic continued to be a factor over the next several circuits, ultimately intensifying with cars stacked two and three wide by lap 21. Although Dietrich did his best to lose Eliason among the slower cars, the driver of the Rudeen Racing entry held on and kept pace with the Gettysburg-native, driving himself within a few car lengths of Dietrich’s back bumper.
Eventually finding his way back to clean air, Dietrich quickly picked up the pace and sailed home, increasing his lead to just shy of three seconds by the time the final checkers waved.
Besides the pair of red flag incidents on the opening lap, the first for Premier Motorsports’ Justin Peck and the second for a multi-car pileup on the front straightaway, the evening’s 30-lapper would go on to be caution free.
“I just want to thank my car owner, Gary Kauffman, for allowing this trip to happen. There are a lot of great people who support this race team and we wouldn’t be in this position without them,” Dietrich continued. “We still have two nights to go, so hopefully we can do this again and give our fans back home something to be even more proud of.”
Cory Eliason would finish second at Monarch Motor Speedway, followed by Southern Oklahoma winner Brock Zearfoss, Roger Crockett, and Dominic Scelzi.

ATTICA, Ohio - Cap Henry survived a tangle battling for the lead early and drove through lapped traffic in perfect fashion to earn his sixth 410 sprint win at Attica Raceway Park Friday, June 12 on Construction Equipment & Supply/Venture Visionary Partners/Advanced Drainage Systems Night. Ryan Markham benefited from a late race caution and drove into the lead coming to the checkers to win the late model feature while a caution flag also benefited Jamie Miller who held off Paul Weaver for the 305 sprint feature win.
Henry, from Republic, Ohio, took the lead from pole-sitter Zane DeVault on lap two of the 30 lap Callie's Performance Products 410 Sprint feature but the two made contact with DeVault spinning. Henry withstood early pressure from eight time track champion Byron Reed and then picked his way through traffic to score his sixth career Attica win.
"Zack, Mike and all the guys give me a really great race car. Man I got really nervous seeing Byron right there when I came by the scoreboard. We kind of ran out of patience there on the first lap with Zane and I feel bad about that deal," said Henry beside his Lane Racing, Dragon's Milk White, New Holland Spirits, Beer Barrel Bourbon, FK Rod Ends, Wings Unlimited, Kistler Engines, J&J Auto Racing, Linder's Speed Equipment, Lead Head Water Fowl, Ballistic Designs, Geck Electric, Nemesis Designs backed machine.
With three laps to go in the Propane.com/Dirt Nerds Podcast Late Model feature Ryan Markham was nearly a straight away behind the the two leaders. Then a caution came out and the Ashland, Ohio driver sat up in the seat and passed Devin Shiels coming to the checkers for his 16th career Attica win placing him third on the all-time victory list.
"My crew chief got me too tight up on the cushion and I was running them guys down early then I jumped the cushion a couple of times and overheated the tires. I needed that caution just to settle things back down. After that it was just get up on the wheel and see what happens. It was treacherous up there...we had to let her hang out but hey, we're up here," said Markham beside his Hickory Hollow Concrete, Terry's Towing, The Beer Barrel, Accu-Force, Clear Detail, Matco Tools by Jimmy, Innovative Graphics, Mars Trucking backed #5M.
Last week Jamie Miller, the defending Fremont Fence 305 Sprints Attica champion, crashed. Miller made up for it Friday. Miller also benefited from a caution, the yellow waiving with 10 laps to go just as Paul Weaver had passed him for the lead. Miller took advantage of the second chance and held Weaver off for his 25th career 305 sprint feature win, tying him with Mike Linder for second on the track's all-time win list.
"I liked to see everyone of those yellows. Every time Paul would get by me I would just try to stick that top and he would sneak by me and that caution would come out and save me. After that last time I figured there's got to be something down there...I've got to try it. I'm going to try to keep racing longer than Paul and cut into that 49 wins he's got," remarked Miller beside his Reedtown Tavern, Fostoria Mod Shop, Sloopy's Pizza, Phil Ritser Racing, Smitty's Pizza, York Carpet, Crown Battery, Schriner Farms backed #26.
DeVault and Reed brought the field to green for the 30 lap 410 sprint feature with DeVault gaining the advantage over Henry, Reed, Chad Kemenah and Tim Shaffer. While battling for the lead on the second circuit, DeVault spun and on the ensuing restart Brian Lay and Caleb Griffith tangled with Lay taking a nasty flip on the front stretch; he was uninjured. On the restart Henry pulled away slightly as Reed and Kemenah battled for second.
Henry maintained about a five car length advantage over Reed while Kemenah ran comfortably in third with Shaffer battling with last week's winner Stuart Brubaker for fourth. The leaders raced into heavy lapped traffic by the 13th circuit but Henry had little problems navigating through while Reed and Kemenah gave chase. At the halfway point the top three remained unchanged but the race for fourth was heating up between Brubaker, Travis Philo and Shaffer.
As the laps ticked off - after the lap two caution and red the race went caution free the rest of the way - Henry seemed to have things well in hand. But, with seven laps to go a pair of lapped cars were racing side by side in front of Henry and Reed and Kemenah closed. Once he was able to work past the lappers, Henry had a clear track the final three circuits to score the win over Reed, Kemenah, Brubaker and Shaffer.
Matt Irey and Tim Sabo comprised the front row of the late model 25 lap feature and when the green flew Irey blasted into the lead. But a caution involving three cars after one lap was scored bunched up the field. When the green flew Irey had his hands full with Devin Shiels while Markham sat comfortably in third. Shiels mounted a challenge of the lead on lap nine but Irey maintained his composure to continue to lead. With seven laps to go Shiels was putting tremendous pressure on Irey as they raced into traffic. Irey got into a lapped car which gave Shiels the opportunity to grab the lead on lap 21.
Shiels and Irey ran side by side and nose to tail while Markham sat back about a half a straight away from the lead duo. Then a caution flew on lap 22. When the green flew Markham jumped to the cushion while Shiels and Irey stuck to the bottom. Markham took second on lap 23 and was side by side with Shiels as they raced to the white flag. Markham road the cushion to perfection and stole the lead coming to the checkers. Shiels, Irey, Larry Bellman and Sabo rounded out the top five.
The start of the 25 lap 305 sprint feature saw pole-sitter Kyle Capodice jump in to the lead over Miller, Brandon Moore, Weaver and Steve Rando. A multi-car incident after a a lap was scored gave Miller the opportunity to jump up to the cushion and grab the lead on the restart. Weaver drove into second on lap five and closed on Miller. A caution on lap nine just as Miller and Weaver were driving into heavy lapped traffic gave them a clear track.
Miller again drove away on the restart with Weaver, Steve Rando, Capodice and Brandon Moore in pursuit. Just as Weaver executed a slider to take the lead on lap 16, a caution would hand the top spot back to Miller. Miller didn't waste the second chance and held off Weaver for the win with Rando, Capodice and Luke Griffith rounding out the top five.

McIntosh Sweeps Night 1 at Lake Ozark Speedway
Eldon, MO (06/12/2020) After clinching the win on the final night of the Turnpike Challenge at Port City Raceway, Cannon McIntosh picks up where he left off by dominating Night #1 at Lake Ozark Speedway. This is McIntosh's second career POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget victory.
Starting inside row three for the 30 lap main event, McIntosh found the bottom early and soon found himself in a battle for the lead with Jake Neuman, and teammate Buddy Kofoid. Jake Neuman and Buddy Kofoid, both starting on the front row, would battle for the lead in the beginning laps while McIntosh made his way through the field. Finding himself taking over the lead and clinching victory, McIntosh would claim his second career POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget victory. Teammate Buddy Kofoid would find himself clinching onto the second position and Jake Neuman rounding out your podium with a third pace finish.

Brock Zearfoss bests field at Southern Oklahoma Speedway for first All Star victory of 2020
ARDMORE, Okla. (June 12, 2020) - For the first time in 2020, and for the fourth time in his career, the ‘Jonestown Jet’ Brock Zearfoss is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, this time reigning supreme at Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Oklahoma, during Cometic Gasket Thunder Through The Plains presented by Hercules Tires action on June 11. Utilizing the outside-pole position, Zearfoss took command for the first time on lap 15 and never looked back, zinging his preferred line around the very topside of the speedway for a $5,000 top prize.
A bit of sweet redemption for the Jonestown, Pennsylvania-based race team, Zearfoss was forced to overcome a mechanical malfunction during qualifying time trials at Devil’s Bowl Speedway before finishing eighth during main event action. Just 24 hours later, Brock Zearfoss and Brock Zearfoss Racing are standing in victory lane.
“This just goes to show how badass my team is. They never stop digging. Even after getting banged up yesterday during qualifying, they had the spare car down before they even towed me off the track,” Brock Zearfoss said, driver of the Brock Zearfoss Racing/Moose’s LZ Bar & Grill/Heavy Equipment, Loaders & Parts Inc./C&D Rigging Inc./BAPS Auto Paints & Supply/No. 3Z sprint car. “A lot of other teams helped us get ready for that heat race. It was nice to salvage the night for an eighth-place finish, but this feels a lot better.”
Before Zearfoss drove his way to the top spot on lap 15, the battle for the lead was perpetual, first held by pole-sitter and full-time All Star, Skylar Gee, for the first five circuits. A caution on lap six would spell bad news for the Canadian hotshot, eventually losing command to Fresno, California’s Dominic Scelzi. The lap six restart would also spell bad news for Zearfoss, who actually slipped back three spots by the time the frontrunners completed the sixth circuit. Zearfoss was racing in the second spot at the time of the caution.
A trio of upcoming caution periods, including a red flag scenario, would give Zearfoss a chance to recover his slip, ultimately battling back to second by lap 11. The ensuing restart after a lap 15 caution is when the ‘Jonestown Jet’ made his winning move, quickly scooting by Scelzi’s No. 41S to lead the circuit.
Despite another four-pack of caution flags, one of which resulting in an open red to allow teams the opportunity to add fuel, and one with just two circuits remaining, Zearfoss held strong and remained untouchable, quickly escaping to a near-straightaway lead as the white flag waved.
“I was pretty mad at myself early on when I lost those three spots. That red flag gave me some time to stew on things a little bit. I knew I was going to have to get up on the wheel,” Zearfoss continued. “I just can’t say enough about my team. Noisey, Tye, and everyone else involved in this deal; they put their heart and soul into this race team. I’m very blessed to be in the position that I’m in. Hopefully we put on a good show for everyone tonight.”
Danny Dietrich powered home second after starting eighth on the grid, followed by Dominic Scelzi, Cory Eliason, and an 11th-starting Justin Sanders.

Kyle Larson earns third consecutive All Star victory during Wednesday visit to Devil’s Bowl Speedway
MESQUITE, Texas (June 11, 2020) - Kyle Larson’s Cometic Gasket Thunder Through The Plains presented by Hercules Tires campaign has been more than impressive, not only scoring three consecutive Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victories, but doing so at facilities scattered across three states, this time in the Lone Star State. Impressive enough, Larson kicked-off his four-race Midwest venture with a runner-up finish at Red Dirt Raceway in Meeker, Oklahoma.
Larson, driver of the Paul Silva-owned/Finley Farms/Tarlton and Sons/GSR/No. 57 sprint car, earned his third consecutive All Star victory on Wednesday evening, June 10, at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, utilizing the outside-pole position to eventually snag the race lead and another $5,000 top prize. Allowing slower cars to help in his pursuit of the front, Larson took command for the first time on lap 14, ultimately driving underneath race leader, Kasey Kahne, at the exit of turn four and defeating the Washington-native in a drag race back to the flag stand. That drag race, won by a mere-.03 seconds, would be the final time Larson was challenged the entire 25-lap distance, as caution flaps would wave the following circuit creating a restart situation in clean air for the Elk Grove, California-native.
Kasey Kahne held on to finish second at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, followed by an eighth-starting Scott Bogucki, Cory Eliason, and Aaron Reutzel, who advanced six positions to seal his top-five outcome.
“I was trying to be patient, but it got to the point where I told myself ‘it’s only a 25-lap race, so I’m probably being a little too patient.’ It was time to go,” Kyle Larson said, who now owns 13 All Star Circuit of Champions victories, this being the first in Texas. “I ran a few really hard laps there and ended up getting by Kasey (Kahne) just before the caution came out. I felt really good. Honestly, I think the car got better and better every time we hit the track and I feel like we definitely learned a lot tonight. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into the rest of the year.
“A big thanks to Paul Silva and Doug. They’ve been logging a lot of hours up and down the road this week and a lot of late nights and early mornings. We’ve had so many supporters step up and help us out and that means the world to me. To all of the fans, thank you so much for supporting local racing and staying up late to watch us race. It means the world to us.”

Pit gates for Spirit Auto Center Speedway will open at 11:30 am with cars hitting the track at 1 pm. Bridgeport Motorsports Park will open pit gates at 4:30 with cars hitting the track at 6 pm. Practice will be open to all interested teams with pit fees being only $30 for the evening.
Due to social distancing guidelines and the Governors executive order, the speedway will only be permitted to sell pit passes in order to enter the facility.
We are taking precautionary measures to ensure a safe environment for fans, participants and employees as we make the return to racing. If you are displaying symptoms of COVID-19 and/or are not feeling well, we ask that you please stay home. The safety of our fans, track employees, and the drivers remains our top priority.
COVID Procedures: All participants, team members, car owners, etc. must maintain safe social distancing at a minimum of 6 feet apart (unless they live in the same household). All race cars must have 6 feet of spacing between each of them. It is highly recommended to wear masks when at the facility, as per the state police of New Jersey. Seating is available and we have marked seats 6 feet apart with an orange marking and have taped off every other row. Please maintain proper social distancing at all times.
