2013 RISLONE URC SPRINT SERIES

32 CARS COMPETE IN RISLONE URC SPRINT SERIES OPENER. . . .
DEFENDING CHAMPION ROBBIE STILLWAGGON CHARGES FROM FOURTEENTH TO WIN THE PIONEER POLE BUILDINGS 25 LAP URC SPRINT FEATURE FRIDAY NIGHT AT BIG DIAMOND

The sixty-sixth season of the Nation’s oldest traveling sprint car organization, the URC Sprint Series, officially opened on Friday night at the Big Diamond Speedway with defending champion Robbie Stillwaggon taking the lead in the late stages of the event. After starting fourteenth, the Burlington, NJ racer took the lead on lap twenty-two of the twenty-five lap feature and went on to win his fourth career URC win. The Rislone URC Sprint Series event was sponsored by Pioneer Pole Buildings and Stillwaggon earned $2,000 for the victory. Stillwaggon earned a $50 bonus for passing the most cars, advancing thirteen spots in the feature event.

A field of thirty cars turned out for a chilly night of racing. Troy Betts was the winner of the Engler Machine & Tool heat race as Bryn Gohn won the Brad Penn Oil heat race with Davie Franek winning the Pioneer Pole Buildings third heat race of the night. The Bar’s Leaks “B” winner was Dave Ely.

Twenty-four cars answered the call for the 25 lap Pioneer Pole Buildings feature event. At the start of the feature, Bryn Gohn established himself as the race leader, holding off a determined Davie Franek with Tim Kelly close in the chase. Franek continued to pressure Gohn for the lead then on lap five, the yellow was displayed for Dave Ely who spun exiting turn two. On the restart, Gohn and Franek continued their battle for the lead and as the leader entered turn one, Kelly took a wild flip, displaying the red flag. Kelly walked away uninjured.

On the restart, Gohn and Franek resumed their battler with JJ Grasso racing in third with Brian Carber (in his first URC start) racing in fourth with Robbie Stillwaggon in fifth by lap six. One lap later, Jonathan Swanson came to a stop displaying the caution flag once again.
Gohn continued to be the front runner with Franek in the chase, then on lap thirteen, Franek powered into the lead position, and at the same time, JJ Grasso moved into second. Following in the top five was Bryn Gohn, Robbie Stillwaggon and Brian Carber.

As the field was completing lap fourteen, Franek was the leader with Grasso trying to close the gap. Grasso, tapped the inside fourth turn tire. After passing the flag stand, Grasso’s car headed to the infield out of control, before hitting another tire and wildly flipping while entering turn one. Grasso walked away uninjured.

On the restart, Franek set the pace followed by Gohn with Stillwaggon now in third. On lap twenty-one, Stillwaggon made a move and powered into second. And now, the two drivers that were battling over the Rislone URC Championship in 2012, are now battling for a win in 2013. On lap twenty-two, Stillwaggon powered by Franek to take the lead and he managed to stay the front runner until the drop of the checker flag. Stillwaggon took the win followed by Davie Franek with Bryn Gohn third, Brian Carber fourth and fifth place finisher Kevin Darling.

Brian Carber in his first URC start delivered a solid fourth place finish. Billy Pauch Jr was also very impressive, after finishing second in the “B” Main, Pauch returned to deliver an impressive eighth place finish in the feature.

RYAN WILSON SCORES RISLONE URC SPRINT SERIES VICTORY IN JUST HIS FIFTH START SATURDAY NIGHT AT PORT ROYAL SPEEDWAY

It was only the second time in history that the URC Sprints visited the Port Royal Speedway and on that night (June 24, 1967), veteran driver Earl Halaquist took the win.

Saturday night, it was Maytown, PA driver Ryan Wilson who scored his first career Rislone URC Sprint Series feature win worth $2,000. Wilson, in just his fifth start with URC took the lead on lap nine from Bryn Gohn and survived several late race cautions to earn the win. The three heat race events were won by Chad Trout, Bryn Gohn and Joey Biasi as Nate Snyder took the win the “B” Main. Chad Trout earned a $50 bonus for setting the Likewise fast time of the night as Robbie Stillwaggon was the Fred’s Trailer Parts hard charger, advancing twelve positions in the feature event.

In the URC sprint feature, Bryn Gohn set the early pace with Chad Trout and Josh Weller in the hunt. Ryan Wilson moved into third then on lap four, he advanced to second.

The first yellow of the race was displayed on lap seven when Steve Downs spun in turn three. On the restart, Gohn had to immediately deal with Wilson who was challenging for the lead. Gohn and Wilson were side-by-side with Wilson holding a slight advantage on lap nine. On lap ten, Kyle Reinhart took a slow roll entering turn one displaying the red flag. Reinhart was not injured.

With the drop of the green flag, Wilson was in solid command with Gohn in the hunt. As the field passed for the halfway mark, Wilson remained on top followed by Gohn, Chad Trout, Josh Weller and JJ Grasso. Jay Galloway brought out the caution on lap fifteen when he stopped on the track.

When the race resumed, Wilson was untouchable and continued to set the pace. Lap sixteen was wild as Ed Aikin flipped after a tangle with Randy West and Art Liedl. All drivers walked away uninjured.

Ryan Wilson once again brought the field down for the double-file restart and out ran Bryn Gohn into turn one. Wilson set the pace and now JJ Grasso was challenging Gohn for second. On lap nineteen, Gohn and Grasso tangled going into turn one and one lap later, Grasso retired to the points. On lap twenty-one, Trout passed Gohn for the runner-up spot and tried to reel in the leader. Robbie Stillwaggon, who started deep in the pack was now racing in fifth.

With the checker flag waiving, Wilson took the victory over Chad Trout, Bryn Gohn, Josh Weller and Robbie Stillwaggon.

Point leader Davie Franek finished ninth as runner-up in points, Robbie Stillwaggon finished fifth. Franek’s point lead is less then thirty points going into Delaware International on Saturday night, September 1. The restart saw Bohlke again retain a solid hold of the top spot with URC hot shoe Ed Aikin in the chase, challenging Bryn Gohn for second. The MACH 1 Chassis sprint of Mark Smith was on a charge and by lap seven, he was in second and chasing Bohlke for the top spot. DUNDEE, NY . . . . . Black Rock Speedway Promoter Dean Hoag defied Mother Nature and every weather forecast during the day and successfully completed the URC/Patriot 360 Sprint Challenge with NASCAR star Tony Stewart taking the victory. With a greater then 70% chance of rain all day, Hoag beat all odds to present a thrilling show for the fans. A strong field of forty-seven sprints cars took part in the co-sanctioned United Racing Company and Patriot Sprint Tour event. Tony Stewart drew the pole starting position in the 25 lap feature event but failed to lead every lap. Oley, PA driver Randy “the wild, wild, West” took the lead from Stewart at the start of the event and held the lead for the first seven laps. After two lead changes on lap eight, Stewart took the top spot and went on to victory, collecting $4,000 for the victory

Five heat race event were necessary to determine the starting line-up with victories going to Tony Stewart, Chuck Hebing, Randy West and Jason Barney as the twin “B” Main events were won by Josh Weller and Glenn Styres. The Original Pizza Logs Cash Dash was won by Don Adamczk.

The 25 lap Rislone URC Sprint Series feature event saw Tony Stewart draw the pole starting position to start the main event. URC driver Randy West was not intimidated by the NASCAR Champion and wrestled the lead from Stewart at the drop of the green flag. West quickly pulled away from Stewart and the rest of the field to hold a comfortable lead, at least for the short term.

Chuck Hebing brought out the first caution on lap three when his sprinter came to a stop in turn four. On the restart, West mastered the track with Stewart in second and Jason Blarney third. Stewart began to reel in West and the stage was set for a battle. On lap eight, West and Stewart exchanged the lead three times before Stewart finally kept the top spot to lead lap eight. West followed in second with Barney third.

Stewart ran to hide from the rest of the field and West now had to deal with Barney and Davie “no panic” Franek as they challenged for second. Bobby Breen, winner of the spring URC/Patriot Challenge was fifth.

By lap twenty, Breen was now in third and challenging West for the runner-up spot. On lap twenty-one, Breen spun down the backstretch, bringing out the caution for the final time of this event. With lightening flashing in the sky, the race restarted with West taking his last shot at the lead. Stewart was not going to allow that to happen as he remained the leader and went on to score his second consecutive Rislone URC Sprint Series feature win. Randy West finished second followed by Jason Barney, Davie Franek and Justin Barger.

Hats off to the track crew and management of the New Egypt Speedway for their efforts in fighting back against Mother Nature Saturday night at the New Egypt Speedway. In the final laps, Grasso, Stillwaggon and Sammons put on a show in a heated battled for the win with Davie “No Panic” Franek now reeling in Sammons.

The final caution of the race came out on lap twenty-four for Jonathan Swanson who spun in turn four.

With just a one lap run to the checker flag, Grasso saw the green flag and planted his foot to the floor, leading the field into turn one. Stillwaggon made a late race bid but settled for a well-deserved second place finish with Davey Sammons third, Davey Franek fourth and Josh Weller fifth.
