Jerry Karl ... Born ... Jerry was a 6 time Indianapolis 500 Starter. He started racing at Freeport Stadium on Long Island in 1957. Jerry competed in ARDC, ATQMRA, URC,and USAC in the Midget,Sprint,Silver Crown,Formula 5000, and Indianpolis Cars. Jerry raced in the Indy 500 in 1973,1974,1975,1978,1980 and 1981.

Dale Earnhardt, Sr.... Born ...Earnhardt is known for his success in the Winston Cup Series, now known as the Sprint Cup Series. He won seventy-six races (including his only Daytona 500 victory in 1998), and his seven championships are tied for most all-time with Richard Petty. His highly aggressive driving style made him a fan favorite and earned him the nicknames "Ironhead", "Mr. Restrictor Plate", "The Man in Black" and most famously, "The Intimidator." Earnhardt died in a last-lap crash during the 2001 Daytona 500.
Troy Ruttman won the 50 lap AAA Midwest Sprint Car race at the Dayton Speedway,Dayton, OH.
Johnnie Parsons , driving the Autobrite #38, won the 30-lap AAA Eastern Sprint Car race on the 1/2 mile dirt Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PA.

A.J. Shepherd won the 30-lap CRA Sprint Car race over Parnelli Jones, Clay Robbins, Jack Brunner and Bud Sterrett at the Ascot Stadium, Los Angeles, CA.

1962
Bobby Johns won the NASCAR Grand National 'Volunteer 500' on the 1/2 mile Bristol International Speedway. Johns led 430 of the 500 laps on his way to a 6 lap victory in a Pontiac owned by his father. Fireball Roberts led the first 61 laps before a coil problem cost him 12 laps in the pits. From then on, the only time Johns was out of the lead was during routine pit stops. Roberts still finished 2nd, having made up 6 laps under green flag conditions in the Banjo Matthews Pontiac. It was Johns 2nd (and final) career GN win and first since 1960.

Geoff Bodine scored his first career NASCAR GN win by taking the 500 lap race on the 1/2 mile Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Virginia. It also marked the first GN victory for car owner Rick Hendrick. Bodine took the lead from Bobby Allison with 49 laps left and took his Chevy across the line 6 seconds ahead of Ron Bouchard's Jack Beebe Buick.
