Paul Goldsmith wins the final NASCAR race held on the beach at Daytona, Florida
Johnny Mantz won the 100 mile USAC Stock Car race at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds, Pomona, CA.

Rod Perry won the Modified race over Pee Wee Griffin and Bill Flingos at the Palmetto Speedway, Miami, FL.

1964
Richard Petty won his first NASCAR Daytona 500.

1969
LeeRoy Yarbrough passed Charlie Glotzbach on the final lap and held off a slingshot attempt by Glotzbach to win the 'Daytona 500' by a car length. Yarbrough was driving the Junior Johnson Mercury while Glotzbach was in Cotton Owens' Dodge.

1975
Richard Petty drove his Dodge to a convincing win in the 'Richmond 500' NASCAR GN race. Lennie Pond's Chevy finished second, 6 laps behind Petty. Point leader Bobby Allison, Buddy Baker and Cale Yarborough all skipped the race.
Bobby Olivero won the 100-lap USAC Midget race at the San Jose Speedway, San Jose, CA.

1986
Kyle Petty took his first career NASCAR Cup win in the 'Richmond 400' following a wild melee with 3 laps left. Petty was running 5th when leader Darrell Waltrip was clipped by Dale Earnhardt as they went into turn 3, sending both cars into the guard rail and collecting third place Geoff Bodine and fourth place Joe Ruttman in the process. The race ended under caution with Ruttman recovering for 2nd, Earnhardt 3rd, Waltrip 5th and Bodine 8th. Earnhardt was fined $3,000 by NASCAR for rough driving.
Sammy Swindell won the World of Outlaws Sprint Car race at the Ascot Park, Gardena, CA. ( Click here for the race report. )
