Bobby Allison drove his Ranier Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo to victory as the NASCAR Grand National season opened with the Western 500 at Riverside International Raceway. The race was the last allowing full sized 115 inch wheelbase cars, beginning with Daytona all cars would be downsized to 110 inch wheelbase maximum. Darrell Waltrip made his first start for Junior Johnson Racing as did Ricky Rudd with DiGard Racing.

Michael Pickens was second followed by Jon Stanbrough, Jonathan Beason, Brad Kuhn, Caleb Armstrong, Tony Roney, Mike Hess, Ricky Stenhouse and Jac Haudenschild.

Rico Abreu won the third night feature of the 37th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals at the Tulsa Expo Raceway, Tulsa, OK. Making the move for the lead through the final two turns, Rico Abreu, threw the Hoosiers on the cushion and shot past Mitchel Moles for his eighth career Chili Bowl preliminary victory. Mitchel Moles was second followed by Brent Crews, Blake Hahn, Kevin Thomas Jr, Ricky Thornton Jr, Taylor Reimer, Thomas Meseraull, Jake Swanson and Trey Gropp.

Spencer Bayston won the 30-lap Victory Fuel Qualifying fourth night feature during the 38th annual Chili Bowl Nationals powered by NOS Energy at the SageNet Center in Tulsa, Okla.. Tanner Thorson finished second followed by Chase Johnson, CJ Leary, Brady Bacon, Tim Buckwalter, Ricky Thornton Jr, Karter Sarff, Ryan Bernal and Parker Jones.
