Art Cross... Born ... AAA driver. He was the first recipient of the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year Award in 1952. He raced in 4 Indy 500 with a best finish of 2nd in 1953.
Al Gordon... Died ... The 1933 AAA Pacific Coast champion and Indy 500 veteran died in a crash in what would prove to be the last race held at Legion Ascot Speedway in Los Angeles California, as the grandstands at the track burned down shortly after the race.
Dale Duncan puts out a fire in his Allard's engine compartment during the 1000 kilometer endurance race in Buenos Aires, Argentina, by urinating on it. His co-driver, Carroll Shelby, had thrown the fire extinguisher out of the car to save weight. They would finish tenth.
Jon Holmquist wins the TQ Midget feature at the indoor Atlantic City Convention Hall. Mike Osite finished second followed by Dave Thompson, John Jenkins, Jack Bertling, Johnny Coy Jr., Joey Coy, Billy Courtwright, Drew Fornoro and Bing Metz.
Shane Burrows won the 30-lap fourth night of Florida Speedweeks UMP Modified feature over Kevin Adams and Spencer Hughes at the East Bay Raceway, Gibsonton, FL.
Tony Stewart , after establishing a new track record of 12.395 seconds in qualifying, won the 35-lap 410 feature final night of the Wild Wing Shootout at the Arizona Speedway, San Tan Valley, AZ. Dominic Scelzi finished second followed by D.J. Netto, Rico Abreu, Cory Eliason, Donny Schatz, Carson Mecedo, Aaron Reutzel, Giovanni Scelzi and Sammy Swindell.
