Rick Hendrick... Born ... NASCAR team owner. Rick Hendrick drove in the 1987 and 1988 Winston Cup races at Riverside International Raceway, finishing 33rd (out with transmission problems after racing to the Top 10) and 15th. He also had a single start in the Busch Series and the Craftsman Truck Series. He had been a pit crew member for Flying 11 that Ray Hendrick drove in the 1960s. Rick Hendrick is an owner of several NASCAR stock cars and teams, as well as Hendrick Automotive Group, one of the largest automotive chains in the United States. Hendrick Motorsports, founded in 1984, is one of the most successful teams in NASCAR racing, with Sprint Cup championships won in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2006, and 2007.
Marvin Panch took the lead from Speedy Thompson with 65 laps to go and then held off a late charge by Buck Baker to win the 100 mile NASCAR Grand National race on the 1/2 mile dirt Southern States Fairgrounds oval in Charlotte, North Carolina. Tiny Lund won the pole in a Pontiac, but was first car out of the race when a gas line broke. Thompson started outside row 1 and led the first 25 laps before giving way to Jack Smith. With the exception of Lee Petty leading one lap, Smith held the top position until his Chevy broke a transmission on the 117th lap. Thompson then regained the lead until Panch took over on lap 135. Panch took his Ford across the line 2 seconds ahead of Baker's Chevy with Petty's Oldsmobile 3rd as Thompson faded late, finishing 4th, 1 lap back in his Chevy. It was Panch's 4th win of the season.

Bud Tingelstad won the USAC Sprint Car race at the Winchester Speedway, Winchester,IN. Gordon Johncock was second followed by Arnie Knepper, Don Branson and Jud Larson.
Tom Bigelow won the USAC Midget race over Don Meacham, Dick Jones, Terry Vaughn and Chuck Arnold at the Hales Corners Speedway, Milwaukee,WI.
Lou Johnson won the URC Sprint Car race at the Nazareth Raceway, Nazareth,PA.
Gus Linder won the Super Sprint Car race over Bobbie Adamson, Ray Tilley, Buddy Cochran and Mitch Smith at the Williams Grove Speedway, Williams Grove,PA.
Mario Andretti drove a Kuzma-Offy to victory in the 100 mile USAC Championship race on the 1.125 mile dirt Nazareth National Speedway in Nazareth, PA. Gary Bettenhausen was second followed by Jerry Daniels, Bud Tinglestad and Wally Dallenbach.
Billy Engelhart won the USAC Midget race over Sonny Ates, Bob Wente, Dave Strickland and Roger West at the Indianapolis Raceway Park, Indianapolis,IN.
Jimmy Oskie won the CRA Sprint Car race at the Clovis Fairgrounds, Clovis,CA. Billy Wilkerson was second followed by Steve Mesner, Colby Scroggin and Don Hamilton.
