1925
Don Freeland... Born ... AAA / USAC driver from the 1950's & 60's. Freeland competed in the Indy 500 each year from 1953 to 1960. He appeared headed for a second place finish in 1955 before a transmission failure ended his day 22 laps prior to the end of the race. He came back with a best Indy finish of third the next year. He also finished in the top ten in 1954 and 1958.
1956
Lou Moore... Died ... AAA driver from the 1920's & 30's.
Buck Baker in a Kiekhaefer Chrysler, won the 100 mile NASCAR Grand National race on the 1 mile dirt Lakewood Speedway in Atlanta, Georgia. Teammate Speedy Thompson was 2nd to give the Kiekhaefer Chryslers another 1-2 finish. Pontiac factory supervisor Lou Moore, a former Indy Car driver, builder & owner (of the famous Blue Crown Specials that dominated the Indy 500 in the late 40's), collapsed and later died from a brain hemmorhage.
1973
Cale Yarborough led all 500 laps in the 'Southeastern 500' at Bristol International Speedway. Yarborough became the first wire-to-wire winner of a "major" NASCAR GN race since Darel Dieringer won at North Wilkesboro in 1967. Yarborough started on the pole in the Junior Johnson Chevrolet and lapped the field by lap 100. Richard Petty's Dodge finished second, 2 laps behind Yarborough.
1979
A.J. Foyt drove a Cosworth/Parnelli to victory in the 200 mile USAC Championship race at Ontario Motor Speedway.
Bobby Allison wins the NW Bank 400 over Richard Petty at the North Wilkesboro Speedway.
1982
Danica Patrick... Born ... An American auto racing driver competing in the IndyCar Series. She was named the Rookie of the Year for both the 2005 Indianapolis 500 and the 2005 IndyCar Series season.
2001
Elliott Sadler wins the Food City 500 over John Andretti at the Bristol Motor Speedway , Bristol, TN.
2007
Kyle Busch wins the Food City 500 over Jeff Burton at the Bristol Motor Speedway , Bristol, TN.
