1942
Danny Ongais... Born ... A former racecar driver from the United States. Born in Kahului, Maui Island, Hawaii, he is the only native Hawaiian to compete at the Indianapolis 500. A motorcycle, sports car, Formula One, and drag racing competitor, in 1963 and 1964 Ongais won the American Hot Rod Association AA Gas Dragster Championship and in 1965 he added the National Hot Rod Association AA Dragster championship title. He ran in 11 Indy 500's with a best finish of 4th in 1979. In 1981 he had a horrible accident at Indy, which almost cost him his life.

Bobby Rahal, 17 years old, raced for the first time. At Harewood Acres in Ontario, Canada, he lapped the field in the first novice race of the day, but spun out.

Mario Andretti was the class of the field at the Belgian GP at Zolder after he put his Lotus on the pole and took the win in a time of 1:39:52.
David Pearson won the Mason-Dixon 500 over Cale Yarborough at the Dover International Speedway, Dover, DE.
Rich Vogler won the USAC Sprint Car race over Billy Engelhart, Pancho Carter, Johnny Parsons and Marvin Carman at the Indianapolis Raceway Park, Indianapolis, IN.

Warren Johnson made the first 195 mph NHRA Pro Stock 1/4-mile run when he ran a 195.05 mph pass in Englishtown, New Jersey.
