Frank Lockhart Set the record for the fastest single lap driven on a board track (championship car) in a Miller 91 rear drive with an average speed of 147.229mph at the Atlantic City track. This track was the fastest and last major board track constructed.
Bob Burris won the Super Modified race over Dick Bailey, Steve Ungar, Dick Kelm and Larry Dickson at the Greater Pittsburgh Speedway, Pittsburgh,PA ( Click here for the race report. )
Mike Spence, Grand Prix and Sports car driver, died when he was killed in practice in the Lotus turbine car at Indianapolis. He crashed and the front right wheel of his car struck him on the head. Later that same night, Carroll Shelby withdrew his two uncompetitive turbine cars from the Indy 500.
Gary Bettenhausen becomes the first to lap the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at over 190 mph. He hits 190.285 in his Penske McLaren- Offy.
Richard Petty, after years of running Plymouths, debuted a Dodge Charger stockcar in the NASCAR Winston 500 at Talladega, Alabama, USA. He finished fifth.
Johnny Hubbard won both twin 50's ARDC Midget racees at the Flemington Fair Speedway , Flemington,NJ
Kenny Weld won the Super Sprint car race over Milt Miller, Smokey Snellbaker, Lynn Paxton and Bobby Allen at the Hagerstown Speedway, Hagerstown,MD
Ralph Quarterson won the Super Modified race over Bill Banick, Ted Wise, Buddy Cochran and Gus Linder at the Tri-City Speedway, Franklin,PA
Rollie Beale won the USAC Sprint car race over Johnny Parsons, Bob Pratt, Larry Dickson and Tom Bigelow at the New Bremen Speedway (1/2p), New Bremen,OH
Bobby Allen won the KARS Super Sprint car feature over Kramer Williamson, Keith Kauffman, Van May and Steve Smith at the Williams Grove Speedway, Williams Grove,PA
Benny Parsons won the Music City 420 over Cale Yarborough at the Nashville Speedway , Nashville , TN
James McElreath won the 40 lap Tony Hulman Classic USAC Sprint car race over Clark Templeman, Roger Rager, Billy Cassella and Jerry Weeks at the Terre Haute Action Track , Terre Haute,IN
Bob Senneker won the ASA 150 mile race over Larry Phillips, Dick Trickle, Larry Detjens and Dave Watson at the Wisconsin State Fair Park Speedway, West Allis, WI. Pole sitter Mark Martin finished 15th and Rusty Wallace finished 18th.
Jason Shultz won the URC Sprint Car Feature at the Bedford Speedway , Bedford, PA, Josh Weller was second followed by Ryan Stillwaggon Dallas Schott and Tyler Denochick.
