A.J. Foyt won the Phoenix 200 USAC Championship Race on the 1 Mile Paved Oval Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona. Mario Andretti finished second followed by Bobby Unser, Joe Leonard and Don Branson.

Swede Savage won the Bobby Ball 150 USAC Championship Race on the 1 Mile Paved Oval Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona. Al Unser finished second followed by Roger McCluskey, Wally Dallenbach and Jim McElreath.
Alton Jones won the Late Model Sportsman race at the Montgomery International Speedway, Montgomery, AL. Bob Burcham was second followed by Friday Hassler, Donnie Allison, Chuck Arnold, Robert Hamke and Wayne Reutimann.
David Pearson won the NASCAR Winston Cup L.A. Times 500 over Lennie Pond at the Ontario Motor Speedway, Ontario, California.
Lealand McSpadden won the Sprint Car race at the Manzanita Speedway, Phoenix, AZ.
Tom Bigelow won the USAC Sprint Car race at the San Jose Speedway (1/3p),San Jose, CA. Billy Cassella was second followed by Sheldon Kinser, James McElreath and Bobby Olivero.
Dean Thompson won the CRA Sprint Car race over Jimmy Oskie, Brad Noffsinger, Rip Williams and Bubby Jones at the Ascot Park Speedway, Gardena,CA.
Will Cagle, driving the Bob Vetzel Camaro, won his third straight 50 lap Late Model feature event at the East Bay Raceway in Tampa, Fl. Wayne Reutimann was second followed by Donnie Tanner, Keith Nosbisch and Keith Hahn.

Elmo Langley... Died... Langley began his racing career racing modified cars in Virginia and Maryland in 1952. Langley came in to NASCAR as a Driver/Owner in 1954. In 1966 in partnered with Henry Woodfield and created Langley-Woodfield Racing. That same year Langley won the only two races of his long career. After the second race of the 1969 season, Langley and Woodfield split and Langley continued to run team on his own returning to the driver/owner role. He finished in the Top-10 in season points from 1967 until his final full season as a driver for Langley Racing in 1975 (except 1974). He continued to drive in a few select races until 1981 when he hung up the helmet for good. Langley shut down his team after the 1987 season.

Sammy Swindell won the winged 30-lap ASCS Lucas Oil Sprint Car race at the USA Raceway, Tucson, AZ, during the final night of the 42nd annual Western World Championship
Carl Edwards won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Ford 400 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, Homestead, FL. Jimmy Johnson finished second followed by Kevin Harvick, Aric Almirola, A.J. Allmendinger, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle.
