Sir Malcolm Campbell became the first person to top 300 mph during land speed runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Campbell averaged 301.13 mph driving his Rolls-Royce powered Bluebird.
Chet Gardner... Died ... Chet started racing in 1922 in Colorado. In 1933 he won the Midwest AAA Sprint Car Championship. He was named "Southern Dirt Racing King" twice. Between 1928 and 1938, Chet made 25 starts in the AAA series, where his best result was 3rd. From 1930 to 1938 he competed in the Indianapolis 500 with a best finish of 4th in 1933. He was killed in an accident during a time trial at the Flemington Speedway in Flemington, New Jersey when he swerved to avoid a child that had run onto the racetrack.
Tony Bettenhausen won the DuQuoin 100 AAA Champ Car race at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, DuQuoin,IL. Bill Holland was second followed by George Connor, Lee Wallard and Walt Brown.
Otis Stine won the AAA Eastern Sprint Car race at the Allegany County Speedway,Cumberland, MD.
Milt Goodwin won the AAA Eastern Sprint Car race at the Little Valley Speedway,Little Valley, NY.
Tony Bettenhausen won the DuQuoin 150 AAA Champ Car race at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, DuQuoin,IL. Walt Faulkner was second followed by Sam Hanks, Chuck Stevenson and Henry Banks.
Bill Schindler won the AAA Eastern Sprint Car race over Tommy Hinnershitz at the Flemington Fair Speedway, Flemington, NJ.
Gays Biro won the AAA Midget race at the Toledo Speedway, Toledo, OH.
Jimmy Bryan won the 100 lap Ted Horn Memorial USAC Champ Car race at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, DuQuoin,IL. Johnny Thomson was second followed by Jim Rathmann, Bob Veith and George Amick.
Ed Terry won the URC Sprint Car race at the Champlain Valley Fairgrounds, Essex Junction,VT. Hal Rettberg was second followed by Beau Clerke, George Monsen and Tom Price.
Dutch Schaefer won the ARDC Midget race at the Flemington Fair Speedway, Flemington,NJ.
Buzz Barton won the IMCA Sprint Car race at the Iowa State Fair Speedway, Des Moines,IA.
Don Davis won the CRA Sprint Car race at the Manzanita Speedway, Phoenix,AZ.
Hank Rogers won the URC Sprint Car race over Bobby Courtwright, Dave Humphrey, Earl Halaquist and Eddie Gallione at the Flemington Fair Speedway, Flemington,NJ.
Gig Stephens won the ARDC Midget race at the Hatfield Speedway, Hatfield, PA.
Jerry Richert won the IMCA Sprint Car race over Johnny White, Russ Long, Bill Horstmeyer and Bobby Hogle at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds (1/2d), St. Paul, MN.
Parnelli Jones won the USAC Joe James/Pat O'Connor Memorial Sprint Car race at the Salem Speedway , Salem,IN. Elmer George finished second followed by Chuck Hulse, Jim Hurtubise and Bud Tingelstad.
Earl Halaquist won the URC Sprint Car race over Cookie Osterhout, Bobby Courtwright, Hank Rogers and Bill Brown at the Flemington Fair Speedway, Flemington,NJ.
Billy Cantrell won the CRA Sprint Car race at the Ascot Park Speedway, Gardena,CA. Hank Henry finished second followed by Ned Spath, Stan McElrath and Dee Jones.
Jerry Richert won the IMCA Sprint Car race at the Dakota State Fair Speedway, Huron,SD.
Jerry Grant became the first USAC driver to break 200 miles per hour. He accomplished the feat in qualifying at the Ontario Motor Speedway , completing a 2.5 mile lap in 44.7 seconds. Roger McCluskey won the race.
