Merle Bettenhausen ... Born ... The second oldest member of the Bettenhausen racing family, he is the son of Tony Bettenhausen and the brother of Gary Bettenhausen and Tony Bettenhausen Jr. Merle's USAC Champ Car racing career was brief and tragic. Three laps into his first Champ Car race on a paved track, Michigan International Speedway on July 16, 1972, he tangled with Mike Hiss and crashed into the outside wall. The car exploded in flames and Merle tried to climb out while it was still moving. His right arm became trapped between the car and the wall and was torn off.
Keith Kauffman ... Born ... Keith won the 1982 USAC "Gold Crown" Nazareth 100 and is one of the more obscure drivers to be credited with a Championship Car victory. His only Championship Car experience was the three dirt races of the 1982 Gold Crown season. He continues to drive 410 winged sprint cars in Pennsylvania and surrounding states and has over 300 career wins. He was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2004 as a member of the "Pennsylvania Posse"..
Rodger Ward won the 100 Mile Rex Mays Classic USAC Indy Car race on the 1 mile paved oval at the Milwaukee Mile, West Allis, WI. Johnny Thomson was second followed by Johnny Boyd, Pat O'Connor and Jim Rathmann.
Bobby Grim won the IMCA Sprint Car race at the Iowa State Fair Speedway, Des Moines,IA
Bert Brooks won the ARDC Midget race at the West Haven Motordrome, West Haven,CT
Dutch Schaefer won the ARDC Midget race at the West Haven Motordrome, West Haven, CT
Bobby Courtwright won the URC Sprint Car race over Earl Halaquist, George Monsen, Don Gillette and Bernie Hart at the Autodrome de Laval, Laval, PQ (Canada)
Bobby Hersh won the Super Modified race at the Lincoln Speedway, Hanover,PA
Dee Jones won the CRA Sprint Car race over Bobby Unser at the Manzanita Speedway, Phoenix,AZ
Jackie McLaughlin won the Modified Stock Car race at the Flemington Fairgrounds Speedway, in Flemington NJ. Sammy Beavers was second, and Al Tasnady finished 3rd thanks to Lee Hendrickson who loaned Tas the rocker arm assembly off his street car to run the feature with after Tas had a major problem on his, and no spare. Bud Olsen and Charlie Cregar rounded out the top 5.

Steve Ungar won the Sprint Car race followed by Larry Dickson and Jim Seese at the Sharon Speedway, Hartford, OH
Lloyd Ruby won the 150 Mile Rex Mays Classic USAC Championship Car race at the 1 Mile Paved Oval The Milwaukee Mile, West Allis, Wisconsin. Mario Andretti finished second followed by Al Unser, Johnny Rutherford and Bruce Walkup.
Ronnie Duman... Died ... USAC driver from 1961 to 1968. Duman died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin during a fatal crash in the Rex Mays 150 at the Milwaukee Mile.
Mel Cornett won the 40 lap USAC Sprint Car race over Bruce Walkup, Don Nordhorn, Larry Dickson and Sammy Sessions at the Terre Haute Action Track , Terre Haute, IN.
Johnny Grum won the Super Sprint Car race over Lynn Paxton, Ed Zirkle, Smokey Snelbaker and Paul Pitzer at the Port Royal Speedway, Port Royal, PA.
Duane (Pancho) Carter won the 30 lap USAC Midget race over Johnny Parsons, Bobby Olivero and Tommy Astone at the Springfield Speedway , Springfield, IL.
Ernie Oldham won the Supermodified race over Richard Wyrsh and Wayne Sue at the West Capital Raceway, West Sacramento, CA.
Paul Jones won the Arizona Racing Association Sprint Car race over Jimmy Oskie, Don Hamilton and Stan McElrath at the Ascot Park, Gardena, CA.
Harry Benjamin won the URC Sprint Car race at the Bridgeport Speedway, Bridgeport, NJ. Bing Metz was second followed by Bill Wentz Jr., Leigh Earnshaw, Bill Schroth, Ed Barnes, Bob Brooks, Carl Bergkvist, Jim Fowler and Monty Wernett.
Pete Hamilton, winner of the 1970 Daytona 500, won the Kansas City 200 Late Model Stock Car race at the I-70 Speedway, Odessa, MO.
Ken Andrews won the 45-lap Supermodified race over Jim Cheney, Jimmy Winks, Kempton Dates and Warren Coniam at the Oswego Speedway, Oswego, NY.
Dub May won the 40-lap Super Sprint Car race over Steve Smith and Jim Edwards at the Lincoln Speedway, Abbottstown, PA.
Dick Tobias won the Modified Stock Car race at the Bridgeport Speedway, Bridgeport, NJ. Bob McCullough was second followed by Budd Olson, Jim Keppley, Bill Ellis, Dave Kelly, Larry Taylor, Walt Olsen, Jim Baker and Chris Skias.
Ray Barnard won the ARCA Late Model Stock Car race over Dick Haas, Mel Gillett, Harold Cook and Ed Hage at the Flat Rock Speedway, Flat Rock, MI.
Mark Caldwell won the Super Sprint Car race over Jim Linder, Dick Gaines, Tom Dickson and Bubba Jones at the Eldora Speedway, Rossburg, OH.
Ken Shoemaker won the 35-lap Modified Stock Car race over Will Cagle, Dave Lape, Harry Peek and Jack Johnson at the Fonda Speedway, Fonda, NY.
