Steve Buckwalter Slides to First ARDC Win at Port Royal
Steve Buckwalter had been winless in 2012 coming into Saturday night’s race at the Port Royal Speedway but that all changed when the checkered flag waved on the field at the end of twenty thrilling laps of racing.
Buckwalter of Royersford, PA divides his time between 410 Sprint Car racing and the ARDC Midgets. The hard charging 2010 ARDC Champion has not had a lot of laps go his way this season but came home with a runner-up finish just a week ago at the Williams Grove Speedway with a last lap pass for the position. This week, Buckwalter was able to improve that finish by one and take his first win of the 2012 season, becoming the third winner in three races in ARDC competition.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s warm-ups, a heat or a feature,” Buckwalter stated after his win. “When I’m on the track, I’m going as fast as I can!”
Manheim, PA driver, Dusty Heistand led the field to the start and quickly took command from Carey Becker of Reading, PA. Brett Arndt quickly moved in to take over second and set chase on the leader.
Steven Drevicki drew a caution when he slowed on the backstretch on lap three. PJ Gargiulo and Parker Evans both headed to the pits with mechanical issues while the race was under yellow flag conditions.
The younger Heistand brother maintained his lead over Arndt on the single file restart but Drew Heistand, the 2011 ARDC Champion had already moved past Becker to take over third as S. Buckwalter completed the top five in running order at this point in the race.
Drew Heistand took over the runner-up spot from Arndt on lap six and quickly closed in on his brother, the leader. One lap later, Drew shot to the inside of Dusty as the pair entered turn three but a caution flag negated the pass for the lead as Mark Gilmore ran into difficulties between turns three and four.
Returning to green flag conditions, Dusty Heistand maintained his lead but Drew came with a head of steam down the backstretch and completed the pass for the lead as the two brothers entered turn three. There was a new leader on lap seven.
S. Buckwalter had made his way past Arndt and pursued Dusty Hiestand for second, taking over the spot on lap nine. At the half way point, Drew Heistand had pulled away to a lead of several car lengths as S. Buckwalter ran second ahead of Dusty Heistand, Arndt and Bruce Buckwalter, Jr.
With racing conditions staying green, Drew Heistand was able to maintain some breathing room between his #1 and the #0 of S. Buckwalter until the yellow flag waved as the field neared the five to go mark. Rookie, Brett Wanner required assistance in turns three and four and again the field aligned nose to tail with Heistand’s advantage erased.
The battle was on between the two past champions as the lead swapped hands between Drew Heistand and Steve Buckwalter time after time. S. Buckwalter would slide to the lead only to have Drew Heistand slide right back by him in the next set of turns.
This time a red flag would interrupt the race for the lead as rookie, Brian Gilmore laid his #13 over in the turns. Gilmore was uninjured. During the break in the action, a flat tire was reported on the #52 of Tim Buckwalter who had raced into the top ten after starting the race in thirteenth. Track officials allowed for a quick tire change as T. Buckwalter returned to the rear of the field with just three green laps of racing remaining.
Drew Heistand restarted the race as the leader but Steve Buckwalter slid into the lead one last time, using an evasive maneuver that prevented Heistand from sliding back by and into the lead. It was the final lead exchange of the race as Steve Buckwalter went on to take the checkered flag just ahead of Drew Heistand. Arndt captured his first top five of the season as Nick Wean lived up to his name and “Slick Nick” edged Bruce Buckwalter, Jr. for fourth at the finish.
Two qualifying heats were run with wins going to Arndt and B. Buckwalter, Jr.
Race Notes
Brett Arndt picked up his third consecutive heat win on his way to his first top five finish of the young season. Arndt has been strong in every ARDC outing this season but was plagued with an ill running motor during his last two feature outings. A podium finish was just what the Topton, PA driver needed to jump start his season. Jimmy Glenn, one of three ARDC rookies, came from the 21st starting spot to finish tenth at the checkered, advancing the most positions of any driver. Tim Buckwalter also passed a lot of cars. After advancing up to 8th, T. Buckwalter returned to the rear of the field to pick up 6th at the checkered after his tire change with just six laps remaining.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Brian Liskai
Liskai2x@cros.net
FREMONT, Ohio – Back in the 1960s and early 1970s, sprint cars mainly competed without the use of the wing bolted on the rollcage. And Fremont Speedway, which is celebrating its 61st season of racing, was no different. But, over the past three decades, sprint cars have mainly utilized the aerodynamics of the those top foils. That changes Saturday, May 12 at “The Track That Action Built.”
The Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series is gearing up for a historical tour of the Buckeye State that will kick off at Fremont Speedway on Root’s Poultry Night. In the storied history of Ohio auto racing, which began in 1897, there has never been a touring non wing sprint car series devoted to the state. The BOSS tour is excited to set the stage at one of the oldest and premiere facilities on the schedule, explained BOSS President Aaron Fry.
The traditional style BOSS sprint cars made their debut in 2011 with 2 events. Ione, California native Justin Grant scored the win at K-C Raceway aboard the Hery Motorsports #40. In October, 30 cars from 8 states competed at Wayne County Speedway where Russiaville, Indiana driver Dustin Smith scored a popular win piloting the #37 Lee’s Hydraulics entry. The question now is when will the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series have it’s first winner from the Buckeye State?
Drivers from 5 states have expressed interest in the Fremont opener which is being co-sanctioned with the Lane Automotive Michigan Traditional Sprint Series. Fans will delight in “Root’s Poultry Night” which will also include the Kistler Racing Products FAST (Fremont Attica Sprint Title) winged sprint car series and the Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks. A full field of BOSS and MTS points runners will be on hand, gunning for the $2,000 winners share and to battle the best of the local non wing racers. Several 305 sprint teams have also expressed an interest in taking the wing off and the BOSS series is proud to announce that Kear’s Speed Shop in Tiffin, Ohio has come on board to sponsor a $100 bonus to the highest finishing steel block motor in the main event.
In addition to the $100 cash steel block bonus, drivers will also be competing for a $50 cash Hard Charger of the race award sponsored by Letemgrow.org. This award will go to the driver advancing the most positions in the A-Main event. A “Hard Luck” Award $50 gift certificate is also being awarded by BOSS officials courtesy of Saldana Race Products and SBI Fuel Systems. 2Grafic Distributions will provide framed photos of the A-Main and B-Main winners.
Once again, Hoosier Racing Tire and American Racer have come on board to sponsor driver bonuses to the highest A-Main finisher on all four of their brand of tire. The Hoosier tire bonus will be a certificate for a free right rear tire and the American Racer bonus will be a $100 certificate toward the purchase of any American Racer Tire. The BOSS series has an open tire rule, but drivers are limited to using the same right rear in their heat race and the A-Main event.
In other BOSS news, several new sponsors have come on board to help with the 2012 season and the points fund. BOSS would like to welcome All Pro Cylinder Heads, Kears Speed Shop, 2Grafic Distributions, Pro Shocks, SBI Fuel Systems, Saldana Race Products, Cleanway Carpet Cleaning, E.A. Home Supply, Hoosier Race Tire, American Racer, Ham Signs, Letemgrow.org, French Grimes Race Systems, ProStar Web Design and Indy Race Parts to the tour. In addition, the BOSS series would like to welcome Rick Lane and Rick Rarer as the official photographers of the series.
For the Fremont Speedway event, gates will open at 4 pm with racing action underway at 7 pm. Drivers are reminded that Schoenfeld Mufflers are required at Fremont along with Raceceivers. Fremont also uses transponders to help accurately score and time the racing events. There are no membership fees or sign-up fees to race with BOSS. This event will go by pill draw for heat race line-ups. Drivers who plan to attend this, or any BOSS events should contact the series to be included in promotional materials. Driver Signups and Pill Draw will be done at the BOSS tent which will open at 4 pm on raceday. Fremont Speedway will be paying in checks for this event.
The complete payout is as follows: 1) $2000 2) $800 3) $600 4) $500 5) $450 6) $400 7) $375 8) $350 9) $325 10) $300 11) $280 12) $260 13) $250 14) $240 15) $225 16) $225 17) $225 18) $225 19) $225 20) $225. All cars who make an honest attempt at competing will be guaranteed $100 tow money, including all B-Main non transfers.
For more information on the BOSS series, please log onto the series website at http://www.buckeyesprints.com or call (740) 703-3768. The BOSS series is looking for sponsors interested in helping with the bonus programs at each event. Sponsorship packages start as low as $50 to be a part of the much appreciated bonus awards.

SHORT STORY
MIKE KELLNER WINS SECOND LATE MODEL FEATURE OF THE SEASON, RAIN WASHES OUT TWO FEATURES AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA May 6, 2012 . . . Before the rains came wiping out the final two racing features ( NASCAR 358 Modifieds and Sportsman) Mike Kellner was able to wheel his own PowerWashers/Mary Kay No. 57 to victory in the 20-lap Mobil 1 Late Model feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night.
The NASCAR 358 Modifieds were coming out for their 30-lap feature when an unexpected rain started to fall. Officials tried waiting for the rain to stop but after at least a 30-minute wait the balance of the show was postponed.
This Saturday night, May 12th, the NASCAR 358 Modified feature that was rained out will be the first event on the track followed by a full show of NASCAR 358 Modifieds, Late Models and Sportsman all sponsored by Whelen Engineering. The rained out Sportsman feature will open the show on Saturday, May 19th as part of BPG Racing Night.
Doug Walton was the early leader in the 20-lapper for Late Models with Mike Kellner charging to the front on the sixth circuit
Chuck Schutz spun in the first turn with six laps completed but was able to continue. The five time champion was able to finish eighth in the feature race.
At the 10 lap marker Kellner and Ron Kline had quite a battle going on and for the next few laps swap positions back and forth. However on the 14th lap Kellner took charge and held on to the top spot right to the checkered flag picking up $900 for his second win of the season. The winnings included a $100 bonus from TP Trailers of Limerick.
Second spot went to Kline followed by Sean Merkel, Andy Ressler and Danny Snyder.

FULL STORY
MIKE KELLNER WINS LATE MODEL FEATURE AT GRANDVIEW, RAIN WINS THE 358 MODIFIED AND SPORTSMAN FEATURES
BECHTELSVILLE, PA May 6, 2012 . . . Young Mike Kellner was able to beat the stellar field of Late Model racers in the 20-lap Mobil 1 feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night but rain beat the rest of the feature racing events
An unexpected rain shower started to fall as the NASCAR 358 Modifieds were lining up for the start of their 30 lap feature. Promoter Bruce Rogers kept the cars running on the track hoping to keep the clay track intact but finally the rain proved to win out and the scheduled Modified and Sportsman features had to be postponed.
The rained out 30-lap 358 Modified feature will now kick off the Saturday, May 12th Whelen Engineering sponsored night of racing which will also include a full show of Modifieds, Late Models and Sportsman stock car racing. The Sportsman feature that was rained out will open the BPG Racing Night on Saturday, May 19th before a full show of Modifieds, Late Models and Sportsman racing is presented.
Doug Walton was quick to put his racer in front of the starting field in the 20-lap Late Model feature race with Dave Ogin right on his rear. After six laps Mike Kellner, coming from fifth starting spot, took the top spot from Walton with Andy Ressler and two feature winner Ron Kline chasing.
Current Late Model point leader Chuck Schutz spun going into the first turn catching an infield tire marker bringing out the caution. Despite the “wrestling match” with the tire Schutz was able to continue restarting at the rear of the field and coming on to finish eighth.
At the midway point of the feature Kellner had Ron Kline right on the rear of his PowerWasher/Mary Kay No. 57.
For a few laps Kellner and Kline entertained the fans swapping positions back and forth on a track that proved to be super smooth and lightning fast.
At the 14 lap marker Lansdale based Kellner took complete control and set the pace for the balance of the 20-lap feature holding a comfortable lead at the finish. Ron Kline (Salford) came home second after having to hold off several challenges from third place finisher Sean Merkel (Gilbertsville). Andy Ressler (Macungie) had a strong effort, challenging for the lead early, and finishing fourth while Danny Snyder (Green Lane) came from 16th to finish fifth.
The strong effort by Snyder earned him the Salvage Transport Service Hard Charger award.
Kellner picked up the Dan’s Deli Halfway Leader award and two dinners courtesy of the Texas Roadhouse Restaurant in Trexlertown, PA. In addition Kellner earned an extra $100 for carrying the T.P. Trailers of Limerick decals clearly visible on his race car.
Cargo Trailer Sales of Lansdale presented a $50 gift certificate to Steve Nederostek.
Qualifying heat races for the Late Models, each eight laps, were won by Wayne Pfeil Jr. and Andy Ressler.
Sportsman qualifiers, each eight laps, went to Bobby Lilick, John Horvath IV and Corey Sechrist.
Twelve lap heats for the NASCAR 358 Modifieds were won by Duane Howard (coming from last), Doug Man miller (coming from last), Tommy Scheetz Jr. and Jon Kellner Jr. Two consolation races for the Modifieds, each 10 laps, were won by Chris Esposito and Meme DeSantis.
Racing action returns to the one-third-mile, banked clay oval at Grandview Speedway on Saturday, May 12th, 7:30 p.m. with the rained out 358 Modified feature followed by a tripleheader show of NASCAR 358 Modifieds, Late Models and Sportsman sponsored by Whelen Engineering. Modifieds run in a 30 lap feature while Late Models and Sportsman top their night with 20 lap features. Adult admission is just $15 while youngsters 12 and under are admitted FREE.
Grandview Speedway, a NASCAR sanctioned one-third-mile, banked clay track, is located at 43 Passmore Road, Bechtelsville, PA, just off Route 100, 10 miles north of Pottstown.
