TRENTON, N.J.-Bob Wagner jr took the overall win in the Microstock feature on the third day of the second annual Battle of Trenton at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton New Jersey Sunday afternoon (December 21). His brother Don Wagner took the title of highest finisher in the L206 Microstock engine class.

Two different engine classes (World Formula and L206) combined to make up the 17 car field. The L206 have 3 less HP than the World Formula so they were given a 25 lb reduction in weight to make it a level playing field.

Heat race winners Tom Ervin and Bob Wagner started on the front row in the 20-lap feature. Luck was smiling on B. Wagner because on the final lap of the heat race, his right rear tire went flat as he came to take the checkered flag. His brother Don Wagner, nearly won the heat race win but timing and scoring put him in second place. Ervin handily won his heat race and look to be a threat to repeat as the Microstock winner of the Battle of Trenton but it was not to be.

B. Wagner took the early lead with Ervin close on his bumper and D. Wagner in third place. Ervin was running a strong second when on lap seven he got too close to the outside wall while setting up for a launch into turn two and knocked the right rear tire off its rim. On the restart B. Wagner resumed the lead with his brother D. Wagner close behind. Behind them Harry who had started in 12th place, was closing steadily on the leaders. On lap eight Burd dove inside of D. Wagner to take second place and by the halfway point Burd was close on B. Wagner and looking inside for a place to make a clean pass for the lead.

The two leaders then opened a small gap on the rest of the field as D. Wagner and Ricky Collins battled for third position.

Bob Wagner went on to take his 17th checkered flag of the season and his first Battle of Trenton trophy. B. Wagner was also the highest finishing World Formula engine driver in the field. His brother Don was the highest finishing L206 engine finisher in third place.

B. Wagner said “It feels great to win. I’ve always had bad luck at indoor races and it feels real good to win here.”

Second place finisher Harry Burd said “The car got better as the race went on. I was almost flat-footing it by the end. I could get under Bob (Wagner) but I couldn’t make a clean pass and I didn’t want to wreck either of us trying to get the win.”

Third place finisher and highest place L206 driver Don Wagner said “We (his brother Bob and him) raced good and hard. My car handled better but he had a little bit more motor but I wasn’t going to lay down. I wanted to win but I didn’t want to wreck our cars.” This was D. Wagner’s second consecutive time as the highest finisher amongst the L206 Microstocks at the Battle of Trenton.

Finishing order: Bob Wagner, Harry Burd, Don Wagner, Ricky Collins, Denny Hiddeman, Bobby Sandt Jr, David Martin, Tom Ervin, Andrew Shuster, Walt Mueller, Neil Rutt, Brian Russell, Robert McGuire, Andy Hiddeman, TJ Rogers, DJ Wagner, (DNS due to broken axel) Louie Keraitis

JANKOWIAK WINS BATTLE OF TRENTON THREE QUARTER MIDGET 40 LAP INDOOR RACE; SECOND PLACE CHANGED CONSTANTLY; GARY HIEBER TAKES COMPANION SLINGSHOT FEATURE

TRENTON, NJ December 21, 2014 . . . Buffalo, N.Y. driver Andy Jankowiak started up front and finished there at the end of the 40-lap Battle Of Trenton TQ Midget feature Saturday night in Sun National Bank Center. Jankowiak was challenged by any number of racers who made it as far as second place only to be taken out by accidents or mechanical problems. Ryan Flores of Mooresville, N.C., was the eventual runner-up in the Len Sammons Motorsports Productions (LSRP) event.

In the companion 20-lap Lentini Auto Salvage Slingshot finale, Gary Hieber raced to the win in a rugged race that saw the Langhorne, Pa., ace move in front at mid-race, then pull away from the pack.

“I had to be good on all of the restarts,” said Jankowkiak. “There were a couple of times when Teddy (Ted Christopher) got my rear wheels off the ground but I held on to it.”

Second place behind Jankowiak was not the place to be on this night. Kyle Reinhardt was in the hot seat for the first four laps before he fell back after Christopher passed him on lap five. Erick Rudolph then assumed second following a restart by getting under Christopher but his stay ended abruptly on lap 23 when his car shut off coming down for a restart. Ryan Flores, close behind, spun and went to the rear of the field as a result.

This put Jimmy Blewett in second, up from a 25th place start. Blewett then spun after contact with Anthony Sesely. Enraged, Blewett slammed into Sesely under caution, ending his race. Sesely went to the rear.

Ryan Susice was elevated to second on the next start, at lap 25. Matt Janisch then gained second only to be passed by Christopher. Flores, who had been involved in a lap 23 spin, charged back through traffic to pass Christopher with six laps left only to have Christopher take the spot back a circuit later.

Over the final laps, Jankowiak remained perfect with Flores a solid and remarkable second, the eleventh and final time second place changed hands. Christopher was third, Mike Lichty a quiet fourth and Janisch fifth.

The welter of mishaps included one serious accident. On lap 15, Lou Cicconi, Jr., who had spun one lap earlier, slammed the fourth corner wall, stopping the race. Cicconi was extricated from his car with great care and precaution and was transported from the arena. Cicconi’s injuries were determined not to be of a serious nature; indeed as he was being wheeled across the track, Cicconi saluted the concerned spectators with the classic ‘wave to the crowd’ who cheered lustily.

#56 Gary Hieber (WoS photo)

Hieber’s Slingshot win came in an event that slowed numerous times by spins.

“Once I had a clear track, the only thing I had to worry about was lapped traffic,” Hieber said.

Ricky Yetter was the runner-up followed by Kurt Bettler, Taylor Eccles and Nick Shaw, who thrilled the fans with his outside groove racing which brought him all the way to second only to fall back with a softening tire over the final laps.

Next on the LSRP agenda is the 2015 Pioneer Pole Building’s Motorsports Racecar & Trade Show January 23-15, 2015 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, Oaks, Pa.

The second Indoor Racing event on the LSRP schedule is set for January 30-31, 2015 with the running of the NAPA Know How Atlantic City Indoor races inside historic Boardwalk Hall. TQ Midgets, Champ Karts and Lentini Auto Salvage Slingshots will be on the calendar with the TQ Midgets racing in feature events both nights.

ERICK RUDOLPH AND TED CHRISTOPHER REGISTER POWERFUL THREE QUARTER MIDGET WINS ON BATTLE OF TRENTON PRELIMINARY NIGHT; CHRIS DALEY DOMINATES CHAMP KART CO-FEATURE

TRENTON, NJ December 20, 2014 . . . – Erick Rudolph of Ransomville, N.Y., and Ted Christopher of Plainville, Ct., flexed their muscles Friday in the Battle Trenton Three Quarter (TQ) Midget Twin Twenty Lap feature races inside Sun National Bank Center in Trenton.

In the companion Champ Kart 20-lap feature, Chris Daley of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., a karting veteran of fifteen years, outran a star studded field to win a highly competitive feature.

The split-field TQ Midget races were a prelude to Saturday night’s Battle Of Trenton, to be run over a 40-lap distance. Tickets still remain for the Saturday night racing action and can be purchased at the box office.

In the first TQ Twin Twenty lap race, Rudolph powered his way by leader Joey Payne not once, but twice, after the first early race double file restart pass was negated by an immediate caution flag. Once in front the second time, Rudolph outran his Mike Lafler chassis teammate Patrick Emerling, Canadian Mike Lichty, Pennsylvanian Zane Zeiner, and Payne, who faded late in the race.

The second TQ event was all Ted Christopher, who gained the lead on lap one and held off a determined race long threat from Howell, N.J., favorite Jimmy Blewett. Shawn Nye, driving a car that first saw competition in 1996, completed a last turn, last lap pass of Anthony Sesely to finish third. Geoff Sutton drove a remarkable race to finish fifth in Blu Metz’s vintage TQ.

Two spectacular accidents punctuated race two. In the first, Steve Craig overrode a spinning Brett Michalski in turn three, then flipped completely over the Jersey barrier fence. He was not hurt. Later in the race, Lou Cicconi, Jr., running third, hopped over Blewett’s wheel on a restart, became airborne and hit the outside turn two fence head on. Like Craig, Cicconi walked away with out injury.

Daley’s winning Champ Kart ride in the 20-lap feature was achieved over Joseph Pacovich, Andrew Swisher, Cale Ross and Danny Bouc. Pacovich led handily at mid-race only to become ensnared in a tangle with lapped traffic, forcing him to restart the race in mid-pack. He made it back to second but had nothing for Daley. Swisher, Ross and Bouc all ran as high as second at one point during the race before finishing in that order.

SUN NATIONAL BANK CENTER TRACK CONSTRUCTION NEARING COMPLETION FOR INDOOR AUTO RACING EVENTS SET FOR FRIDAY AND SATURDAY

TRENTON, NJ December 18, 2014 . . . The transformation of the stark concrete slab that is the floor of Trenton. N.J.’s Sun National Bank Center into a highly competitive tenth-of-a-mile speedway began Wednesday, December 17 and is nearing completion as of Thursday afternoon, December 18.

The labor intensive job is in preparation for Battle Of Trenton II, two days of Three Quarter Midget racing on Friday and Saturday, December 18-19. TQs are joined by Champ Karts Friday night and by the Lentini Auto Salvage Slingshots Saturday evening.

The Len Sammons Motorsports Productions produced program racing events currently list 68 TQ Midgets, and 24 Slingshots and Champ Karts each - full fields - for the two days of action.

Track preparation is a two stage process. The most important element of the preparation of the track is the placement of nine truckloads of concrete ‘Jersey barriers’ that define the inside and outside edges of the racing surface. The Jersey barrier was developed at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., in 1950s, hence its name. All Barriers were in place Thursday morning.

The next most important phase of the track prep is the introduction of cola syrup onto the concrete floor. The syrup will combine with the rubber from the Hoosier tires to create adhesion, or ‘grip’ for the cars. Interestingly enough, the rate of adhesion actually increases over the two days of racing activity, the exact opposite of what happens at most outdoor venues.

The first on-track action starts at 1:00 p.m. Friday with closed- to-the-public TQ Midget and Champ Kart practice and time trials.

Spectator gates open at 6:30 p.m. with the first actual racing set to start at 7:30 p.m.

The next day, Saturday, on track action racing begins at 1:00 p.m. with closed-to-the public practice.

Gates for spectators open at 5:00 p.m. Saturday. The popular meet-and-greet session known as Fanfest starts as soon as the gates open, leading up to a 7:00 p.m. start time for racing with TQs joined by the Lentini Auto Salvage Slingshots.

Tickets for both events are available online at www.comcasttix.com and will be available at the arena box office the day of the event.
