Accord, NY - Accord Speedway Initiates Changes As Month Of May Begins With Arkel Motors Night
By: Steve Pados, Accord Speedway Media

The Tri-State area saw many speedways fall victim to the unpredictable spring weather last week including the Accord Speedway. With the racing activity being scrubbed out for the evening, Promoters Gary and Donna Palmer addressed some important issues the drivers and owners brought forth at some of the pitside driver meetings. With that being said, some changes to the rules and an additional racing division will meet the great Accord Speedway racing fans as the month of May restarts the speedway schedule at the pristine quarter mile facility this coming Friday evening, May 6th. The evening of speed will be sponsored by longtime speedway sponsor Arkel Motors, who also sponsor the Pure Stock racing division at the speedway. Website: www.arkelmotors.com

The changes in the speedway rules will reflect to the now combined Open and Crate Sportsman division. After two weeks of the season and some major concerns by the drivers, Promoter Gary Palmer remarked, "The Crate Sportsman drivers and owners were not enthusiastic about the combined division so we haven taken a long look at it and have come up with some changes we feel will provide more balance and level out the competition within the class."

Starting with the Friday event, the weights have been adjusted with a 2350 pound weight for the Crate motors, 2450 pounds for the Open motors and 2500 pounds for the Open motors with ported heads. Accord Speedway follows the OCFS Crate rules. Hunt's seals are not required and Hoosier Tires will be allowed for the first two appearances of a new driver competing at the speedway.

The additional change is for a new division at the speedway. After handling and addressing many requests, Starting with the May 6th event, a Rookie Sportsman division will be added to the existing race schedule. This division is targeted for true rookie drivers who have transitioned into Sportsman racing and have not competed or have captured a Sportsman division win to date, no chips required.

The Palmer Family came off an excellent 2015 racing season and is looking forward to another successful season at Accord although the weather has not been overly friendly during the early portion of the 2016 schedule. Seven divisions of racing will greet the fans on Friday evening with the United Pump & Tank sponsored Modifieds, Healey Brothers Group Sportsman, Arkel Motors Pure Stocks, WRWD Junior Slingshots, Want Ad Digest Outlaw Slingshots and the Ruge's Performance Northeast Wingless Sprint Cars. Much interest has centered around the new sprint car series as the division was introduced last year and has gained considerable attention for drivers who are seeking their entry into open wheel competition but doing so in an affordable fashion. Drivers who have won thus far are "The Young Outlaw" Jesse James Bartelson who was victorious on opening night and "The Layton Laser" Brody Adamsky who dominated the action on the secondweek of racing. With more cars being completed in some of the local shops, the new division will be stepping into new territory with each week of the season. Former Hamlin Speedway 600 Sprint Champion, "The Conductor" Bobby Butler has informed track management he will be making a visit to the speedway in the near future.

Five 4-Cylinder Enduro events remain in place at the speedway for 2016 with the next event taking place on May 20th with $2,000.00 going to the winner, $750.00 to second place and $500.00 to third place based on a fifty car minimum. Emmanuel's Marketplace is the sponsor for the six event series. The racing in the past has been wild and zany as the fireballers cowboy up when the green flag drops. George Zeininger has been at the head of the class for many of the Enduro events and captured the first event on April 22nd.

Racing is on tap every Friday night from April through September. Pit Gates open at 4:30; Spectator Gates open at 5:00; Hot Laps are at 6:30 and the racing begins at 7 PM. The Palmer Family in keeping true to their racing fans will show no increase in admission at the gate with admission for Adults $14.00; Seniors $12.00 (65+); Children $3.00 (11+ under) Indoor Seating $20.00; Family four pack special: 2 Adults + 2 Children and $20.00 in Food Vouchers for $44.00 (a savings of $10.00). Special Shows will have an increase in admission prices.
