Donny Schatz Continues Dominance at River Cities
GRAND FORKS, ND – June 15, 2018 – North Dakota’s own Donny Schatz continued his dominance at River Cities Speedway, passing race-long leader Kerry Madsen on Lap 25 to win his 11th World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series Feature of 2018. It was Schatz’s sixth win in his last seven starts at the bullring. Brad Sweet came forward to finish second with Madsen settling for third.
The “Mad Man” Kerry Madsen won the Sears Craftsman Dash, earning the pole for the 40-lap Feature alongside Schatz. Local driver Austin Pierce brought out the first of many cautions in the lengthy event, flipping off the banking on the opening lap. Pierce, the 2017 NOSA Sprints Champion, was uninjured in the accident.
Madsen got the jump on the start once again, utilizing the bottom of the speedway as Schatz pounded the cushion. Lap 6 saw third-starting Austin McCarl go for a light tumble in turn four, bringing out the Red Flag once again. McCarl completed the race with a damaged top wing.
Four laps later, Cory Eliason and Jade Hastings bounced off the racing surface, bringing out another caution and keeping the leaders out of lapped traffic. On each restart, Schatz, on the top, was able to stay with Madsen for a lap or two before the Australian would distance himself on the bottom.
Sheldon Haudenschild’s Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing No.17 lost power while running sixth on Lap 17, bringing out the caution. A caution on the ensuing double-file restart brought the field back to Green under single-file conditions.
Following that caution, for the first time, the leaders reached traffic on the bullring. Lapped cars were littered all over the racing surface. Madsen was able to clear the first few cars getting underneath them while remaining committed to the bottom. Schatz would follow suit on the bottom by some of the lappers, but the entire capacity crowd at River Cities Speedway knew the Tony Stewart Racing No.15 would be able to maintain speed on the cushion as well.
Schatz capitalized on Madsen’s inability to clear a slower car on the backstretch, powering around the No.2M off of turn four to lead Lap 25. Schatz used the same line to clear the lapped car before getting back to the bottom to protect the lead.
Brad Sweet followed Schatz on the cushion around Madsen as well and would line up next to Schatz with eight laps remaining after the caution flew for Jason Johnson. Schatz motored away on the restart and did the same thing on the final restart with four laps to go to win his 11th Feature of the 2018 campaign and extend his lead atop the Point Standings.
Sweet would finish 2.369 seconds behind the Fargo, ND native with Madsen settling for third.
“I kept trying that top and I knew if we got into traffic I might be able to make it work,” Schatz said in Victory Lane. When asked about the multitude of cautions, Schatz simply cited that they are part of racing, but the early cautions had him wondering how the track would change as the race would go on. The North Dakota native savored the emotion of the hometown victory saying, “You never know when your last win is going to be.”
Brad Sweet was upbeat about his runner-up finish. “We were fast, I had a couple of lines working in one and two. I would have liked to give Donny a better run for his money, but he never missed a mark out front. Eventually, we’ll figure out how to beat him here,” Sweet added with a smile.
Kerry Madsen led the first 24 laps but settled for third after losing the lead in lapped traffic. “I didn’t do a good enough job. I became immobile in traffic. I tried to play a patient game and I should have been more aggressive,” Madsen said honestly before thanking his team for giving him a great car.
Shane Stewart had a strong run coming from 11th to finish fourth with Daryn Pittman completing the top five. Dominic Scelzi charged from 21st to sixth, but Mark Dobmeier grabbed KSE Hard Charger honors coming from a provisional starting 25th to finish ninth. The massive crowd at River Cities was engaged all evening, especially when track regular Thomas Kennedy set Quick Time and won his Heat Race.

WINDOM GROOVES AT THE GROVE FOR EASTERN STORM NIGHT 2 WIN

Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.....June 15 - Chris Windom grew up racing and winning at Williams Grove Speedway.
No, not in the physical sense. But he was a regular at the famed track in his younger days every time he sat down in front of the tube and plugged in his PlayStation 2.
Winning at The Grove in virtual reality is one thing. Winning at the half-mile dirt oval in real life is the real deal. Now, the Canton, Illinois wheelman can say he's done it twice in two different types of racecars.
Two years following his spectacular Silver Crown win there, Windom returned to Williams Grove victory lane, this time in a USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car, Friday night in round two of the 12th annual "Eastern Storm" tour.
Windom lined up 5th in the 23-car field for the 30-lapper as Robert Ballou spurted to the lead from his outside front row starting position. Thursday night Grandview winner Brady Bacon was electrified as well, knifing between Timmy Buckwalter and C.J. Leary to migrate from 4th to 2nd heading into turn three.
Ballou and Bacon were the class of the field early on, gapping the third-place car of Leary to the tune of a half-straightaway by the 5thcircuit. Ballou, who swept all three races of the 2015 Eastern Storm series, was aiming to put his name on the board as a winner for the first time this year with USAC. He was at the right place as nearly half his 28 career series wins have come on tracks a half-mile in length. Ballou proved his prowess on the bigger venues by negating Bacon for nearly the first two-thirds of the race.
By that point, Windom held down the third spot and was searching the Pennsylvania countryside for a way to rope the top-two in. The heavy racing surface providing lightning-quick lap times throughout the night, with newly-established track records set in qualifying and the heats, but proved to be a challenge for drivers trying to pick their way through a murderer's row of front runners that included the three most recent series' champs.
"It was just so locked down and heavy, and with a full fuel load, we couldn't really get on the throttle early on," Windom explained. "It finally started cleaning off a little bit on entry at both corners. I kind of started to haul it in there a little harder and try to get into a groove instead of just sliding wherever your car was going to go. (The track) started moving up and the bottom came in a little better, which worked out in our favor."

On the 20th lap, Bacon remained in attack mode, ready to swat the lead out of Ballou's hands at a moment's notice. In turn two, it finally came to fruition as Bacon powered off the bottom to rip by Ballou for the race lead. One lap later, Windom parroted the act, jetting past Ballou for 2nd.
Windom was now on the charge and Bacon was his intended target. Windom took a chance on laps 24 and 25, nearly nipping the inside guardrail with his left front rubber on corner entry in his pursuit of Bacon. Bacon's car began to shower sparks out of the rear as Windom zeroed in on the 26th go-around. Windom stuck a nose underneath Bacon between turns one and two, completing the process by the time the two hit the back straightaway to secure the top spot.
"The track finally started blowing off some with about 12 laps to go," Windom recalls. "(Bacon) was leading and I don't think he knew that he was missing the bottom or there was even more moisture. This place is so tough to get by a guy down the straightaways. I wanted to make sure that, when I made my move, I cleared him. I know he's a smart racecar driver. If I would've showed him a nose, he probably would've moved down, and I would've never been able to get by him."
Windom began to stretch his lead and the red-carpet, yellow brick road entrance to victory lane was a near certainty as the white flag loomed on the horizon. That is, until the yellow flag intercepted the proceedings for a turn 4 spin by Trevor Kobylarz, thus setting up a green-white-checkered finish and a chance for the two champs to duke it out one more time.

One night earlier, after losing the lead to Kevin Thomas, Jr. late in the going, Bacon's bid for a win seemed futile until the final two laps when he figuratively rose from the grave to reclaim the lead on his way to victory in the Eastern Storm opener.
Windom wasn't about to let this one slip through his hands as he hustled his Baldwin Brothers Racing/Fox Paving - AMSOIL/DRC/Claxton Mopar on the restart, gapping Bacon by five car-lengths as he led the field into turn one.
Windom was never fazed and never threatened following the final restart, finishing out his night with a 0.558 margin of victory over Bacon, Ballou, Thomas and series Rookie Timmy Buckwalter, who scored a career-best fifth-place result.
The win was the 20th of Windom's career, making him the 27th USAC National Sprint Car driver to reach the 20-win mark.

Paul McMahan wins at Attica to open Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by C&R Racing
ATTICA, Ohio (June 15, 2018) - It took Paul McMahan nearly 16 years to snap his All Star Circuit of Champions winless streak just one week ago in Dundee, New York. Now, the Nashville native via Elk Grove, Calif., is a two-time All Star winner in 2018, earning the $5,000 payday at Attica Raceway Park to open the 36th edition of Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by C&R Racing.
McMahan, driver of the Tom Buch-owned/Apex Structures/DMI/No. 13 sprint car, earned his fifth-career All Star victory by displaying patience and persistence, battling within the top-five the entire 40-lap distance before taking over the top spot for the final time on lap 25. With a little help from race leader, Aaron Reutzel, McMahan was able to take advantage of Reutzel’s misfortune with the turn four wall to inherit the top spot, driving on to score his first-ever victory at Attica Raceway Park.
“Today is Bryan Clauson’s birthday and I parked it for him,” said an excited Paul McMahan in Attica victory lane. “This has been a long time coming. I think I ran second here a few times but never got it done. To get it done here tonight to open up Speedweek is pretty special. My team worked their butts off to get us to this point. We have a long week ahead of us. To begin Speedweek with a victory will set the tone for the next eight races.”
Despite the turn four wall being the benefactor, McMahan was in the hunt all 40 circuits. Starting from the inside of row two, McMahan’s first, successful bid for the top spot occurred on lap 19, actually gaining command after race-long leader and NASCAR star, Kyle Larson, made contact with the turn four wall leaving his car heavily damaged. Larson eventually slowed resulting in a caution; he would not return.
On the ensuing restart, Reutzel, the evening’s pole-sitter who was racing in the runner-up spot the entire distance, worked around McMahan to lead lap 20, pounding the cushion in turns three and four to drive around the familiar No. 13 sprinter. Although Reutzel was able to maintain a quick pace around the topside of the speedway, McMahan’s preferred bottom groove was working just fine, keeping pace with the Clute, Texas, native as the laps counted down.
Just four circuits later, Reutzel would fall victim to the same patch of retaining wall as Larson, ultimately making contact with the turn four barrier. Reutzel’s mishap and loss of momentum would allow McMahan to slip by and take control again on lap 25. Keeping pace with McMahan for the next several circuits, Reutzel’s No. 87 would eventually succumb, forced to retire on lap 30.
From that point forward, it was all McMahan at the front of the field, but not without pressure from another NASCAR star, Kasey Kahne. Kahne, who maintained a spot within the top-five all 40 laps after starting alongside McMahan during the initial start, attempted his best Jac Haudenschild impression in an attempt to drive around McMahan for the lead. Fortunately for McMahan, Kahne’s momentum was shut down by the turn four wall, nearly toppling the Kasey Kahne Racing entry before miraculously regaining control. Kahne’s misfortune was enough to allow McMahan to escape from the rest of the field, driving away to a near-three second lead at the finish.
“I was pretty committed to the bottom of the speedway,” McMahan continued. “I’m too old to be up on the top and run the cushion like those guys. We found something with this car that has allowed me to run the bottom and keep good speed. I know (Tom Buch) has a few victories in New York, but I’m pretty sure this is his first win in Ohio. My dad is with me here tonight. I want to wish him a Happy Father’s Day just in case we don’t get to be up here again on Sunday.”

“Jammin” Jimmy Wells Captures The Modified Cargo For 2nd Win In Accord Speedway Action
Accord, NY- Accord Speedway Promoters Gary and Donna Palmer presented a seven division show on Friday evening that went off without a hitch. The weather was just right and the Catskills Mountain scenery is majestic to behold no matter what time of the season. The special show that was set for Wednesday night was unfortunately postponed to a later date to be named later in the summer as Promoter Gary Palmer took a nasty spill off of the grader when preparing the track for racing and has been in quite some discomfort since then. Mr. Palmer soldiered on to have the speedway ready for Friday evening and had the facility “fit as a fiddle” as he always does. Friday night produced another of those great nights as another great crowd was on hand to enjoy the evening of speed sponsored by the good folks at Dig Safely New York. (www.digsafelynewyork.com)
Jimmy Wells rocked the house with an outstanding drive to capture his second Modified win of the season at Accord and in doing so becoming the first driver to double down and collect his earnings in the Insinger Fuels Modified finale. "The Bushkill Bullet" Kyle Rohner captured his fifth win of the season in the Arkel Motors Sportsman main event. Livy Johnson celebrated her 18th birthday by driving past her fellow combatants to capture her first win of the season as she captured the Upstate Auto Pure Stock encounter. "The Travelin Man" Mick D’Agostino raced to his second win of the season in the WRWD Radio NEWS Sprint Car feature. Michael Corbin was triumphant in the WRWD Radio Rookie Sportsman feature event as he captured his ever win at the speedway. The Emmanuel's Marketplace Fireball 4-Cylinder feature was captured by another first time winner as Jesse Torrens found the bottom of the raceway to be his ticket to the checkered flag and was victorious. The Emmanuel’s Marketplace Four Cylinder Enduros closed the show with a rip-snorting and entertaining fifty lap finale that found Shawn Maloney having the hot foot in a rousing win for him.
Eddie Burgess and Danny Creeden brought the field down for the start of the Insinger Fuels 30-lap headliner for the Modifieds. Creeden jumped into the lead from his front row starting spot and immediately found the center lane of the speedway much to his liking as he was able to control the top spot easily though the first twelve laps until a restart slowed the action. On the restart Jimmy Wells would move along side of Creeden and the pair squared off and it would be Wells winning the battle off of turn two to take command of the lead.
Creeden would follow but in the blink of an eye Anthony Perrego came knocking and took over the runner-up slot. By that time Wells had built up a solid lead and Perrego pullled out all of the stops to reel him and did. They would be nose to tail in slower traffic and Perrego took a couple of shots on the inside to try to slip past Wells but it would be Wells crossing the line first with Perrego a nip away in Rich Ricci Jr was third with Jerry Higbie and Danny Creeden completing the top five. The returning Andy Bachetti headed up the second five with Joe Judge, Richard Smith, Mike Ricci and Jesse Marks completing the top ten. The action was jam-packed with excitement throughout the entire 30-laps of racing.
The Arkel Motors Sportsman event found Mike Senecal in the lead for two laps before yielding to the high flying Leo Fotopolous. “The Architect” would roll out to a big lead but a disabled Greg McCloskey would bring out the caution on lap-17. On the restart it would be Kyle Rohner behind Fotopolous and Rohner kicked the race car up a notch as he drove by Fotopolous one lap later and built up a nice margin of victory at the checkered flag. Rohner would carve out a huge advantage over the field as he separated himself from the pack and he would go on to his fifth win of the season. Cole Hentschel was second with Leo Fotopolous, Nick Plumstead and Mike Senecal completing the top five. Alex VanPelt, Tyler Johnston, Danny Morgiewicz, Chris VanDuser and Anthony Recchio would round out the top ten.
Michael Corbin raced into the lead at the start of the WRWD Radio Rookie
Sportsman feature attraction. Corbin had a fast car and enjoyed a quick breakaway from the field. Only in the latter stages of the event did Travis Green get close to make it a solid event. Corbin would go on to capture his ever win at Accord in a full size car with Green in the runner-up role. Joe Coppola recovered from a spin to finish third while John Brown and the returning Samantha Muller would complete the top five positions. Charles Loiodice, Erin Paulison, Jared Miller, newcomers Travis Cogswell and Billy Fiske completed the field.
In the Upstate Auto Pure Stock event Livy Johnson seized the moment and would lead all of the way to give herself a big win on her birthday. Travis Brockner would race to second with Steve Williams, and the returning John Drake completing the top five. Emerson Cargain headed up the second five with newcomer Jimmy Maher, Ray Tarantino, newcomer JB Morris and Mike Arrigoni following.
Mick D'Agostino would jump into the lead off of turn four at the start in the WRWD Radio NEWS Sprint feature. D'Agostino would lead all of the way as he withstood many challenges from Jeremy Quick to go on and secure his second win of the season at Accord. Quick would finish second with Mark Conolly and Mike Traver finishing as the cars running at the end.
In the regularly scheduled Fireballers feature, Ed King led the first four laps before giving way to Jesse Torrens on a restart. Jesse Torrens would remain in front for the remainder of race and holding off challenges from Jerry Kingeter and Shawn Maloney. Torrens would hold on for his first career win at Accord and enjoy a big celebration in the WRWD Victory Lane. Kingeter, Maloney, Dave Donovan and Jeff DeGroat completed the top five. Anthony Tarantino, Marisol Torrens, Nicole Nelson, Willie DeGraw and Ed King would complete the top ten.
In the Emmanuels Marketplace Four Cylinder Enduro show closer, Jeff DeGroat would lead for the first 22-laps until yielding to the mighty fast Shawn Maloney. Once Maloney was in front he sailed around the competition with ease as he went on to his first win of the season. Jeff DeGroat would hang on for second with Johnny Bankich charging from 15th starting position to nail down third place. George Zeininger returned to action and was fourth with Shawny Hazel completing the top five.
GEMSTONES:
The hotly contested racing action was completed at 10:28 PM. Kudos again to Gary Palmer for working through much pain and agony to give the competitors an excellent race track to display their talents and for the fans to enjoy an evening of great racing action.

Writer Marie Doyons was also in the house referencing material she will be doing for the “Chronogram” Magazine. She also interviewed and stated just being on the speedway grounds made her a fan as the excitement spills over with each division that takes to the race track.
Heat wins went to Rich icci Jr, Danny Creeden and Jimmy Wells in the Modified division. Two heats were needed for the Sportsman with wins going to Matt Shultz and Leo Fotopolous. The Rookie Sportsman heats were claimed by John Brown and Michael Corbin. Mick D'Agostino captured the sprint car heat win. The Pure Stock heat wins were captured by Travis Brockner and Livy Johnson. Fireball heat winners included Willie DeGraw and Richard Smith.
Grandma Anne’s Pies were in the house and each feature winner was given a treat worth consuming for their dining pleasure.

USAC’S BRADY BACON GOES BACK-TO-BACK AT GRANDVIEW, RYAN GODOWN GRABS MODIFIED VICTORY AT THUNDER ON THE HILL THURSDAY NIGHT
BECHTELSVILLE, PA (June 14, 2018) – Second verse same as the first. Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Brady Bacon scored his second consecutive NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series win on Thursday night, when the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series invaded Grandview Speedway for the kick-off of the 2018 Eastern Storm swing of events.
Bacon took home a $6,000 prize for the Jesse Hockett Classic win in front of a capacity crowd at the Berks County dirt track.
Outside front row starter, Chad Boespflug blasted to the early lead aboard the AMSOIL-sponsored No. 98 machine charging ahead of Bacon and defending USAC Champion, Chris Windom. Not letting Boespflug gain an advantage, the lead trio soared in tandem around the one-third mile.
Lapped traffic would prove to be Boespflug’s demise as he shot to the outside and Bacon shot to the inside of a slower machine. Bacon, using the lapper to his advantage overtook the top spot.
A three-wide battle for third on the 12th circuit saw current USAC Series point leader, Kevin Thomas, Jr. slip into the third position.
The red flew on lap 16 when Justin Grant got upside down on the front stretch ending his night.
Bacon pulled back to the lead on the restart with KTJ challenging for the top spot. The laps clicked off until the 27 circuit when Trevor Kobylarz spun out.
Kevin Thomas Jr. pulled to the top spot with 10 laps remaining and charged away from Bacon – but Bacon charged back with two to go and to win the opening event of the Eastern Storm. Thomas finished second, Windom in third, Tyler Courtney in fourth and Jarret Andretti rounding out the top-five.
“The Ringoes Rocket” Ryan Godown won the 358 Modified feature event aboard the Searock Fabrications No. 26 machine. The win marked Godown’s second NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill victory – and first since 2012.
Current weekly Grandview Speedway point leader, Brett Kressley started on the pole and dominated the early portion of the event. Eighteen laps clicked off without a hitch before the first caution of the night flew on lap 18 and again on lap 21.
Godown moved to the lead on the restart and went on to score the victory. Brett Kressley finished in second, Duane Howard in third, Jeff Strunk in fourth, and Frank Cozze in the fifth position.
