Baughman Flies To Friday Night Score At 9th Annual Hockett/McMillin Memorial
Bryan Hulbert - WHEATLAND, Mo. (September 20, 2019) Denied the win in Thursday's opener, Josh Baughman was not about to let that happen again as the Precision Catalyst No. 17 led start to finish on the second night of the General Tire Hockett/McMillin Memorial with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network.
With a fifth on Thursday to go with his win, Baughman has secured the pole for Saturday's $10,000 to win Hockett/McMillin Memorial finale.

"We've been close here and just hadn't been able to get it done, so this is pretty cool," commented Baughman of his first career win at Lucas Oil Speedway. "We have Fischer Body Shop here and this is their backyard, so it's really good to win for them and everybody back home. Aaron [Reutzel] won tonight too at Williams Grove, so this is the second time we've both won on the same night. I feel like that says a lot about our entire team."
Leading start to finish for his second career SawBlade.com A-Feature triumph, Baughman's night was nearly cut short a couple of times as the cushion became deeper and deeper off the fourth turn.
"It was getting narrow in turn-four. Just real slick on exit to a big curb and that wall has gotten me plenty of times here. I know how bad it hurts and I didn't want to give it up for this team. I can't say enough for Dylan and Wayne, plus we have R.J. with us this weekend. These guys gave me a badass car every time we pulled onto the track tonight."
Keeping Roger Crockett at bay through a complete restart that came after Sam Hafertepe, Jr. went sideways and collected Bales, Seavey, and Phillips, another red on Lap 5 for Scott Bogucki saw the Rocket Designs No. 11 take another shot at the lead.
Pulling away to nearly three seconds as the race cleared the half-way point, one of Baughman's encounters with the cushion allowed Crockett to close in with Seth Bergman in tow. Getting the run for the runner-up spot on Lap 16, the Young Tool Co. No. 23 grabbed the spot on the following lap. Making up more time on the No. 17, the red lights came on one last time working Lap 19 for Brad Bowden who biked hard and flipped in turn four.
Back to the 18th lap on the restart, Bergman kept pace but could not keep Baughman in striking distance with the Odessa, Texas driver pulling away to a 0.621-second advantage at the checkered flag over Seth Berman with Roger Crockett holding on to complete the podium.
Jumping from Victory Lane with the POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League 10th on the grid with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series, Oklahoma's Brady Bacon worked to a fourth-place finish with Derek Hagar charging forward 14 positions to complete the top five.
Moving up 10 spots, Jack Dover gabbed sixth with Blake Hahn rallying in the last half of he feature to climb from 18th to seventh. Up as high as sixth from 17th, Mark Smith ended up slipping to eighth with Jonathan Cornell and Tim Crawley making up the top ten.
With Preliminary Nights in the books, Josh Baughman (312) will be joined by Blake Hahn (305) on the front row of Saturday's A-Feature. Roger Crockett (292), Derek Hagar (286), Dylan Westbrook (259), Paul Nienhiser (252), Ayrton Gennetten (249), and Jack Dover (249) made up the top eight that automatically lock into the A-Feature. The remainder of the field will start their night on one of four Last Chance Qualifiers.
Overall, 71 drivers from 15 states and three counties have taken part in the 2019 Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial.

GRANDVIEW SPORTSMAN CHAMP BRAD BRIGHTBILL WINS FREEDOM 38 SPORTSMAN FEATURE AND JOE KAY EARNS HIS FIRST CAREER MID-ATLANTIC SPRINT SERIES FEATURE WIN; FREEDOM 76 TAKES PLACE TONIGHT
BECHTELSVILLE, PA September 21, 2019 . . . Brad Brightbill and Kevin Hirthler thrilled the fans in the stands Friday night at Grandview Speedway with a spirited battle for the top spot in-and-out of heavy lapped traffic over the final dozen laps or so in the sixth annual “Night Before The Sixer” Freedom 38’er, with Brightbill coming out on top to earn the $2,000 payday at the checkered.
For Brightbill, who just a week earlier earned his first career Sportsman track championship at the Bechtelsville, PA dirt track, it was career win number 10 and Brightbill’s fifth win of the 2019 racing season. The popular triumph was his first since August 17 of this season. The Sinking Spring, PA second-generation chauffeur became the sixth different winner in six Freedom 38’er events overall to date at the high-banked third-mile oval.
Brightbill captured checkered flags in his heat race and the feature to give him a clean sweep for the evening.
Also on the card were the Delaware Auto Exchange Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series winged 305 Sprint Cars, with Dublin, PA based self-employed electrician Joe Kay powering out on top with the drop of the green after starting from the pole position and leading every lap in the 25-lap feature to earn his first career MASS victory by a safe margin. Kay was never seriously challenged in the fray, leading by nearly a full straightaway through much of the event.
“I can’t really put it into words,” revealed Brightbill afterwards. “I am so thankful for all the guys who helped me this season. To go out on a high note like this, it really means a lot.”
Nate Brinker, 24, of Allentown, PA started on the pole in the 38-lap Sportsman main event as the 26-car starting field took the green and was the race leader until Kenny Bock, who started outside row one, grabbed the top spot on lap 4.
By lap 8, Brightbill, who started from fifth by the luck of the draw, climbed into the runner-up role, followed by Brian Hirthler and Brinker. The 26-year-old Birdsboro, PA resident, Bock, remained out in from as the laps clicked off, with Brightbill closing the gap by lap 14.
Laps 15 and 16 saw Bock and Brightbill in a fan-pleasing battle, with Brightbill exiting turn 4 on lap 17, driving under Bock to become the new race leader.
“Kenny was running me pretty good there and I just couldn’t shake him on the outside,” explained Brightbill. “As the track started to get slicker our car just started to come around and we were lucky to prevail there at the end.”
Kevin Hirthler, 39, of Boyertown, PA, who won the event in 2018, started from eleventh-place and hustled his way up to fourth-place by lap 9. Ten circuits later, Hirthler advanced into second-place and lap 20 saw the only caution of the night as Ryan Beltz spun out in turn 2.
When racing resumed it was Brightbill rocketing out in front of Kevin Hirthler, as Bock battled wheel-to-wheel with 27-year-old Jared Umbenhauer for third for a lap, prior to Umbenhauer eventually taking the spot on lap 22.
With 26 tours complete, Kevin Hirthler closed in on the rear of Brightbill’s homebuilt mount and the battle for first was on. Hirthler challenged Brightbill racing in-and-out of lapped traffic, but Brightbill fought off every challenge with ease.
“I didn’t know how close anyone was,” Brightbill was saying. “I just tried to pick and choose very carefully where I went without getting tangled up with anyone else in lapped traffic. Things just turned out in our favor.”
“It was a tough track, being so narrow,” offered Kevin Hirthler. “I understand the lapped cars are out there racing for position too and I wished we could have had some good side-by-side racing for the lead, but that’s not how it turned out. Everyone was running clean and it is what it is.”
Brightbill brought home the victory over Kevin Hirthler, who earned an additional $100 as the first Crate powered car to cross the line, with Jared Umbenhauer finishing third, after starting thirteenth, with 37-year-old Brian Hirthler of Perkiomenville, PA fourth, after starting from eighth, and Bock rounding out the top five finishers in that order.
“We were fighting the car all night and finally figured it out before the feature,” announced the third-place finisher from Richland, PA, Umbenhauer. “I couldn’t tell who the race leader was racing in all that lapped traffic. I had to look up at the leader’s board to see just who was where at one point. It feels good to finally finish a feature race for once.”
Heat race victories with a total of 42 Sportsman on hand went out to Brightbill, Jesse Leiby, Brad Grim and Brian Hirthler, with consolation wins earned by Brad Arnold and Mike Toth.
In the MASS Sprint Car feature, Kay started on the pole and immediately jumped out on top over 29-year-old Eddie Wagner, of Franklinville, N.J., who started outside of row one. Dominic Melair of Jamison, PA followed as the third-place car.
Christian Rumsey, 21, of Middletown, N.Y. advanced to fifth-place on lap 10, just behind 36-year-old Jon Haegele out of Rockledge, PA, and climbed to fourth at the halfway point, just prior to Wagner spinning out all alone in turn 2, bringing out the only caution of the event that started 20 cars.
With the new green Kay again powered out in front and by lap 17 he was nearly a full straightaway out in front over Melair, Rumsey, Haegele and recently crowned champion Bordentown, N.J. veteran racer Larry McVay, who’ll turn 56-years-old on September 28, in that order. That’s how the race finished, as Kay authored his first-ever MASS 305 Sprint Car feature win.
“Damn, this feels good,” announced Kay, who also races 600 wingless micro sprints throughout the season. “I tried not to worry and not make any mistakes while I was running out in front. I tried to be consistent and just hit my marks each lap. I did my best to not get tangled up with any of the lapped cars. Tonight we just had all our ducks in a row.
“I’ve got to thank Brian Carber and my good friend Tim Tanner Jr. They both helped me out and Tanner Jr. is always there if I need something. This is just totally awesome. It feels great,” Kay pointed out.
Heat victories for 20 MASS 305 Sprint Cars went to Daniel Leaper and Dominic Melair. No consolation was needed.
Some 43 358 Modified campaigners showed up for a night of practice sessions throughout the night preparing for the Freedom 76 scheduled for Saturday night. In all the pits were packed with a grand total of 105 race cars for the evening of competition.
Next on the agenda is the $25,000 to win 49th Annual Freedom 76 for Modifieds. Racing will get the green for the first qualifying event at 7 p.m. Adult admission is $40, with youngsters 6 through 11 paying $10 and kids under 6 admitted free. Advance ticket holders are admitted at 3 p.m. with general admission tickets on sale at 3:30 p.m.

Blake Hahn Triumphant In Hockett/McMillin Memorial Opener At Lucas Oil Speedway

(September 19, 2019) The trip to Victory Lane with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network that has eluded Blake Hahn for years finally became a reality on Thursday night, as the Smiley's Racing Products/DriveWFX.com No. 52 battled tooth and nail through Night 1 of the 9th annual General Tire Hockett/McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway.
"This is a win that I wanted really bad. It's not Saturday night, but it's still a big deal for me, especially coming in here with 69 other drivers," stated Hahn.

Blake's eighth career SawBlade.com A-Feature victory with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network, the No. 52 took the green from the pole with Josh Baughman in tow from the third starting spot. Caution after the first lap following contact between Dylan Westbrook and Robbie Price that sent the No. 21p around, the caution lights came on again after Lap 3 for Brandon Hanks who slammed into the wall.
Rolling the bottom line on the restart, Baughman showed a nose to Hahn through the third and fourth turns on Lap 4. Adjusting his line low to keep the No. 17 at bay, Hahn slipped out of the groove, letting Baughman take the top spot.
Red working Lap 6 for Jeff Swindell, who went airborne and landed hard on the bottom frame rails but was unharmed, Baughman's lead was short-lived as Hahn rolled by on the cushion through turns one and two before diving the bottom on turns three and four.
On the race for the lead, Hahn stated, "I thought I need to run the top, and then Josh came in and he was working the bottom really well in three and four. After he showed it to me, I knew I needed to get down there and just missed it. Once I got by on the restart, I got back down there and just focused on not letting the car drift and it felt really good."
Putting distance on the No. 17, Hahn continued to work the top of turns one and two and the hub of turns three and four. Finding traffic on Lap 15, Blake's road was blocked, giving the Fischer Body Shop No. 17 a hole to retake the lead on Lap 16.
Diving to the bottom entering turns three to block Baughman from getting the line, the two tapped tires, forcing Josh up the track and giving the race lead back to Hahn on Lap 17. Red flag the following lap for Jay Russell, who went over after tagging an infield tire, Hahn brought the field back to green two more times after that; Sam Hafertepe, Jr. clipped a tire on the restart, followed by Jack Dover going around on Lap 19.
Green for the final time with six laps to run, Hahn darted away as Baughman came under fire from Paul Nienhiser and Dylan Westbrook. Contact with the No. 47x who squeezed between the No. 17 and the wall off the fourth turn, the rub sent Josh sideways as the field clicked off Lap 21 but was able to recover and avoid a caution.
With the race for second giving Hahn all the room he needed, Blake hit the finish line 0.900 seconds ahead of Dylan Westbrook, who came through the field from eighth. Paul Nienhiser grabbed third with Derek Hagar moving from seventh to fourth. Josh Baughman ended up getting shuffled back to fifth.
Roger Crockett in sixth was followed by Ayrton Gennetten. Moving up from 12th, Sean McClelland grabbed eighth with Kameron Key grabbing his first career top-ten finish with the National Tour. Falling back to 16th at the mid-point of the A-Feature, Harli White came back to finish 10th.
A field of 70 drivers from 15 states and three countries were on hand to open the 9th annual General Tire Hockett/McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway. The entire field will run again on Friday, September 20, 2019, with event points from Thursday and Friday combined to set the lineups for Saturday night. Going into Friday, Blake Hahn leads the event points with 169 markers. Dylan Westbrook at 159 is trailed by Paul Nienhiser with 152. Derek Hagar at 147 is followed by Josh Baughman at 144 points.

WHEATLAND, MO. (September 19, 2019) - The ninth annual Jesse Hockett / Daniel McMillin Memorial opened with a bang in Thursday's Mesilla Valley Transportation preliminary as Zach Daum of Pocahontas, Ill. glided to the race lead on lap 17 and held on for his sixth-career POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League victory.
Opening with the unique addition of group qualifying, the four flights to open the night saw Garrett Aitken (14.735), Thomas Meseraull (14.521), Chris Windom (14.551) and Riley Kreisel (14.900) top the charts.
In heat race action, the four-car inversion offered several thrilling starts as drivers sliced and diced for position with points on the line. In the end, Garrett Aitken (Hinchman Racewear Heat 1), Landon Simon (Bell Racing HQ Heat 2), Chris Windom (Schure Built Suspensions Heat 3) and Riley Kreisel (Wilwood Brakes Heat 4) took wins.
A trio of qualifiers spiced it up further with a six-car inversion in play, creating some on-the-edge charges as guys like Thomas Meseraull won High Side Design qualifier one from fifth, Chris Windom won Indy Race Parts qualifier two from sixth and Zach Daum won Chalk Stix qualifier three from fifth.
Setting the stage for the 25-lap preliminary feature, one final twist was thrown into the mix as the top eight in combined points were inverted, slotting Chris Windom and Riley Kreisel on the fourth row with three daunting duos in front of them.
At the drop of the green flag in feature action, Mitchell Moore of Edgerton, Kans. took advantage of his pole position and guided his No. 51 entry to the point while the war for position ensued behind him.
Holding a steady command early on, Moore paced himself while the battle for second brewed between Daum, Schudy and a storming Windom from eighth. Seeing the cross flags at halfway, Moore's lead began to shrink as Daum and Windom mounted a run at the No. 51.
Pulling within striking distance, Daum made several peeks to the inside before cashing in off turn two on the 16th circuit, gassing it off exit as he snuck underneath Moore and powering by him down the backstretch. While Daum focused on his lead, attention turned to Windom, who after taking second away from Moore ended up biking his No. 5G in turn two, but miraculously saved it and only lost one spot.
Catching the first and only stoppage of the race on lap 24, the field was reset after a top-ten running Terry Richards went wildly flipping in turn three. He was okay, but certainly heated afterwards. Coming to the green-white-checkered restart, Daum stayed committed to the bottom while Windom tried to go side-by-side for Moore in pursuit for second.
In the end, neither Moore and Windom could catch Daum, as the Pocahontas, Ill. native drove the No. 5D from fifth-to-first and earned his sixth-career POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League victory. Coming on night one of the Jesse Hockett / Daniel McMillin Memorial, Daum's win mathematically guarantees him a spot in Saturday's pole shuffle at Lucas Oil Speedway.
Chasing Daum to the finish line and earning a runner-up bid was Mitchell Moore, who had no more than 12 hours ago put the finishing touches on a freshly-built No. 51 machine. Rounding out the podium with Daum and Moore was Chris Windom, who capped his stellar night with an eighth-to-third run in the NOS Energy Drink No. 5G.
Closing out the top ten was Kory Schudy in fourth, Joe B. Miller in fifth, Garrett Aitken in sixth, Landon Simon in eighth, Ty Hulsey in ninth and Chris Phillips in tenth.
After Thursday's opening preliminary, Chris Windom (250l) eads the points situation ahead of Zach Daum (248), Joe B. Miller (218), Mitchell Moore (214) and Garrett Aitken (213). Full points can be found on WAR Sprints social media.

BECHTELSVILLE, PA September 17, 2019 . . . The biggest stock car racing event of the season at Grandview Speedway, the 49th Annual Freedom 76, is set for Saturday, September 21st. More than $25,000 is being offered to the winner of what has become the “Granddaddy” of area Modified stock car racing classics. The action gets the green at 7 p.m. A September 28th rain date is in place.
Duane Howard, the new track Modified champion and defending champion of this event, is being touted as a favorite to win. He is a five time winner of the Classic. Other past winners expected to be entered include Craig Von Dohren, the all-time leading feature winner at the Bechtelsville clay oval. And there will be Jeff Strunk, a seven time winner, Brett Kressley, past winner Ray Swinehart, along with three time winner Meme DeSantis, Mike Gular, Doug Manmiller, and quite possibly six time winner Billy Pauch Sr. and Jr. along with NASCAR Truck Series standout Stewart Friesen.
Of course the 49th version of the Freedom 76 will also attract many of the top names in the sport as visiting talents along with a large field of Grandview regulars. You just never know who might show up to try for the $25,000 plus winner’s money.
And on Friday, September 20th the Mid Atlantic Sprint Series along with the Sportsman racers will be in action in the doubleheader Freedom 38. Modifieds entered in the Freedom 76 will be permitted some practice laps as part of the Friday night racing action. Heading up the popular sprint car racing action will be such talents as Tim Tanner Jr., Jon Haegele, Jeff Geiges, Ryan Stillwagon, and a long list of others.
Bobby Gunther Walsh and his sponsors have added some excitement by posting $500 for the Hard Charger in the 76 lap race that will this year have no mandatory fuel stop.
Top performers during the Saturday night qualifying will take part in a Cash Dash paying $1,000 to win.
Adult admission for the Freedom 76 is $40 but advance tickets are available up to and including September 20th and they are priced at $35. Youngsters 6 thru 11 pay $10 and kids under 6 are admitted free.
Advance ticket holders are admitted at 3 p.m. while the general admission gates will be open at 3:30 p.m.
Between 3:35 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Duane Howard and Brad Brightbill will be meeting fans and signing autographs at the SDS Photo booth.
There is no license required for the Friday and Saturday stock car racing events.
Admission for the Friday, September 20th, Sprint and Sportsman doubleheader, is $12 for adults, $5 for youngsters 6 thru 11 and under 6 are admitted free. Pit admission is $35. Racing gets the green at 7:30 p.m.
The Freedom 76 has a September 28 rain date while the Friday night event offers no rain date.

Those with campers on the speedway grounds are reminded that the campers must be removed the day following the Freedom 76.
Final point standings show Duane Howard and Brad Brightbill as the official 2019 NASCAR champions.
Duane Howard tallied 5153 points on his way to a sixth T.P.Trailers NASCAR 358 Modified championship. Finishing second, in a late season charge, was Brett Kressley with 4773 counters. Ten time champion Craig Von Dohren finished third with 4675 points followed by Doug Manmiller with 4385 and Rick Laubach at 4174. The Modifieds raced n 20 point events with 61 racers earning points.
Brad Brightbill earned his first title in the T.P.Truck Equipment Sportsman division getting 4172 points. Second spot was taken by past champion Brian Hirthler with 3796 points. Third spot went to Brad Grim who had tallied 3670 points. Fourth went to Brad Arnold with 3551 followed by fifth place finisher Kyle Lilick with 3541 counters. Sportsman raced in 20 races during the season with 55 racers earning points.

DEMO DERBY, 5 RACES AND DISCOUNT ADMISSION ON “PACK THE TRACK NIGHT” AT WALL STADIUM SATURDAY (SEPT. 21)
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Auto racing fans have a big event on tap this Saturday night (Sept. 21) at Wall Stadium Speedway with Demolition Derby action and five racing main events during “Pack the Track Night” festivities. A special discounted admission price of just $10 for adults and $5 for students aged 6 to 16 will be offered. Kids 5 and under and parking are always free. Spectator seating will open at 5:00 p.m., with qualifying slated for 5:45 p.m. Main event action will follow at around 7:00 p.m. This “Carnival Night” themed event will feature free games for children on the midway area.
On the high banked third mile paved oval five feature races will be presented with the O'Shea's Auto Repair Factory Stocks battling in twin 25-lap feature races, while Center State Engineering Sportsman cars and the Mike's Performance Center Limited Late Models compete in 25-lap main events. In addition, the touring ATQMRA Three-Quarter Midgets will race in a 25-lap feature on the fifth mile inner oval.
Top racers in the twin Factory Stock races will include defending champion Mike Montano of Freeport, N.Y. former champ Scott Riggleman of Manchester and Beachwood's Elliot Wohl, the current point leader in the race for the 2019 driving title.
Once the races are complete, the action will turn destructive when Demolition Derby action is presented.
The grandstand midway will be festive during the “Carnival Night” event as plenty of games of chance for youngsters will be offered with prizes going to the winners.
Saturday’s schedule will see the competitor pit area open at 1:00 p.m. Regular practice will start at 3:00 p.m., while spectator seating will open at 5:00 p.m. Qualifying will then begin at 5:45 p.m. and feature race action for all divisions is slated for 7:00 p.m.
The Wall Stadium Speedway regular season schedule will continue every Saturday night through October 5. Special daytime racing events are set for October 19 and Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend.
