BETTENHAUSEN LEGACY LIVES ON AT SPRINGFIELD
Tony Bettenhausen was among inductees into the USAC Hall of Fame this year. This Saturday’s TRAXXAS USAC Silver Crown race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds continues his legacy, one which resulted in numerous major racing triumphs and titles, including the 1951 AAA and 1958 USAC National Driving Championship.
Tony won at Springfield in 1947, 1950 and 1951 and his son Gary was the 1978 and 1983 winner.
This year, four-time race winner Brian Tyler will try to become only the second driver to win five “Tony Bettenhausen 100” classics. Chuck Gurney won seven between 1994 and 1996. A.J. Foyt and Jack Hewitt each won four times, while Dave Darland, Mario Andretti, Al Unser, Rodger Ward and the aforementioned Tony Bettenhausen himself each recorded three wins in the race which dates all the way back to 1934.
Tracy Hines, who won at Springfield in 2006, will lead the series to the 100-miler, holding a tenuous four-point lead over Bobby East in the latest standings. Hines won the most recent race, August 2 at Belleville, Kans.
Kody Swanson and Jerry Coons Jr., each like East seeking a Springfield first, stand just eight and 12 points behind Hines with 66 points on the line in Saturday’s race.
A.J. Fike, the defending race winner, and Russ Gamester, the 1998 race winner, complete the quintet of former “Bettenhausen” champions in Saturday’s field.
Last year, Fike became the first Illinios driver to win the “Tony Bettenhausen 100” since Gary Bettenhausen’s 1983 victory.
2013 TRAXXAS USAC Silver Crown Point Standings: 1-Tracy Hines-247, 2-Bobby East-243, 3-Kody Swanson-239, 4-Jerry Coons Jr.-235, 5-Chris Windom-213, 6-Brian Tyler-204, 7-Shane Hollingsworth-182, 8-A. J. Fike-155, 9-David Byrne-127, 10-Bobby Santos-108.

KOKOMO SPRINT “SMACKDOWN” AUGUST 22-24;
STANBROUGH TAKES “SHORTENED” OSKY “CHALLENGE”
The AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car series is preparing for the second annual “Sprint Car Smackdown” at the Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway and the event promises to be pivotal in the battle for the 2013 championship.
Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. returned to the point lead after Tuesday night’s “Casey’s General Stores Ultimate Challenge” at Oskaloosa, Iowa where he finished 14th. He emerged from that race with a five-point cushion as his closest pursuers, Bryan Clauson and Brady Bacon, finished 20th and third respectively.
The Oskaloosa race was halted by rain after 20 of the 30 scheduled laps and Jon Stanbrough of Avon, Ind. was declared the winner in his Marion Underground Construction/DND Oil Company DRC/Dynotech. He led all of the 20 laps to beat Kyle Larson, Bacon, Chase Stockon and Jerry Coons Jr.
Clauson won last year’s inaugural “Sprint Car Smackdown” as well as the opening-night prelim. Chris Windom also won a prelim in the three-night spectacular at the one-third mile dirt oval.
Kevin Thomas Jr., who was 15th at Oskaloosa after an earlier heat-race flip, is only 41 points behind Darland in the standings, with Stockon just 76 back. More than 200 championship points will be available during the Kokomo events.
2013 AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Point Standings: 1-Dave Darland-1,125; 2-Bryan Clauson-1,120; 3-Brady Bacon-1,105; 4-Kevin Thomas Jr.-1,084; 5-Chase Stockon-1,049; 6-Hunter Schuerenberg-947; 7-Robert Ballou-922; 8-Tracy Hines-919; 9-Chris Windom-739; 10-Shane Cottle-707.

COTTLE CLOSES “EASTERN STORM” WITH SUSQUEHANNA WIN; CLAUSON TAKES TITLE

The United States Auto Club.
Newberrytown, Pennsylvania…….Shane Cottle of Kokomo, Indiana finished off the 2013 Rotondo Weirich “Eastern Storm” with a win for the hometown crowd as he put Pennsylvania car owner Gene Franckowiak and his tribute “City of Syracuse Special” in victory lane on Sunday night at Susquehanna Speedway Park. It was Cottle’s third career National Sprint Car win, and first in the state of Pennsylvania.
Cottle started from the front row and set the pace early as he and front-row mate Tracy Hines stretched it out over the rest of the field. The red came out on lap seven as Joey Biasi was caught up in a turn-three spin. That restart set up the longest green-flag section of the race, with early-race mover Dave Darland fading from a podium spot. Kevin Thomas, Jr. moved into the show position with a couple big slide-jobs, and he brought Bryan Clauson and Robert Ballou along past the halfway point.
With just 11 laps to go, Hines got a big run on Cottle and followed him into turn-three. Finding a strip of rubber through the middle, Hines flew by just as they exited turn-four, but the red flag was flying as Tim Glatfelter flipped in turn-one. Cottle retained the lead for the restart, giving him another chance to hold the lead.
On the restart, Thomas dove to the bottom of turn-one and bounced up in front of Hines, who was unable to turn back underneath him. Now with less than ten laps to go, Thomas reeled Cottle in and threw a succession of dive-bombs, with Cottle countering every one with a cross-over off the corner.
With the white flag waving, Thomas got a good run down the backstretch and tried one more monster slide-job but Cottle drove back underneath and nearly brought Hines with him. At the line, it was a .114-second win for Cottle in the Viper Risk Management – Specialty Rigging #65 Spike/Rider.
“This was kind of a throw-together deal, but Gene Franckowiak put together a good car for us. It took us a couple nights to figure it out, but we threw some things at it tonight, and it worked. It was hard to find where to be, and then I was sick as I saw Tracy go by. Luckily the red came out, and I got another chance. I figured that was where the rubber was, so I moved down a bit there. I knew he (Kevin Thomas, Jr.) was gonna blow through the rubber, so I just had to focus on hitting it and staying smooth with our tires going away there,” Cottle said.
Thomas held off Hines by .26 seconds to finish second in the Mike Dutcher/Rotondo Weirich/Tri-Star Motorsports – Black Jack Oil Company #17RW Maxim/Fisher.
“The restart gave us a chance at the top two. There was just a fine line, and it was hard to hit it on a slider. It was a pretty good race for us, and I’m happy to get back on the podium after kinda having a rough week out East here. I threw everything I had at him for the win. I drove it off in there the last lap pretty hard and it didn’t stick, but that’s a well-deserved win for those guys and I’m happy with our run,” Thomas said.
Hines just missed his opportunity at the win with an untimely red flag, but still held on for third in the Hansen’s Welding – Motor City Auto Transport #4 DRC/Stanton Mopar.
“I knew I showed everybody when I passed him for the lead where the track was. Kevin got us there with his slider on the restart, and I could get back to them, but there wasn’t much room to do anything. You really only get one shot at it on a track like that, but the red flag just got us there. The last two nights went pretty well for us, so I’m pretty excited to go back home and race again,” Hines said.
Clauson came home fourth in the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing – Chevy Performance #20 Beast/Kistler, locking up his second-straight Rotondo Weirich “Eastern Storm” championship by just one point over Darland.
“We were one of the first to find the clean groove tonight, and picked our way from eighth. The late red didn’t help us, but our car was good tonight. We had our work cut out for us tonight to win the week, but we ran our butts off and are really happy to pick up another Eastern Storm championship. It’s a lot like a basketball game, where if you win all four quarters you can’t lose, so it’s good to be as strong as we were out here and kinda get going well again,” Clauson said.
Ballou rounded out the top-five in the Baldwin Brothers Racing – Fox Paving #5 Maxim/Kercher Mopar.

DARLAND DOMINATES PORT ROYAL “EASTERN STORM” SPRINT CARS

Port Royal, Pennsylvania…….Saturday’s second leg of the Rotondo Weirich “Eastern Storm” for the AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series at Port Royal Speedway was never in much doubt as Lincoln, Indiana’s Dave Darland jumped from the front row and trounced the 22-car feature field. For Darland, it was the second win of the season and 42nd career score.
Darland quickly stretched a huge lead as battle ensued nearly all race long for top-five spots behind him. Point leader Chase Stockon snuck around the bottom to grab the second spot before Daron Clayton and Bryan Clauson made contact on the front-stretch while racing for third. The duo continued on and shadowed Stockon for much of the race.
Clayton finally moved back to second late in the race, as Darland had put five lapped cars between himself and the rest of the field. Brady Bacon was the big mover, as he slowly worked his way into the top-five with ten laps to go. A caution for Landon Simon’s flat right-rear tire with six laps to go gave the pack one more chance at Darland, whose lead of over six seconds was erased.
Clayton cleared traffic quickly and took off after Darland, but the veteran eased away from all pursuers to post a 3.003-second victory aboard the Phillips Motorsports – Racer’s Advantage #71P DRC/Foxco.
“We’re just having a lot of fun with this team. Steve & Carla Phillips have given me a great opportunity this season, and we’re happy to get some wins together. Tonight was a tough race track, but I like to run the high line. I was just concentrating on my entries, especially getting into turn-one. The restart wasn’t what I wanted to see, but I knew I had some lapped cars and just made sure I ran into one hard enough,” Darland said.
Clayton held on for second, taking a 12-point lead in “Eastern Storm” standings into Sunday’s mini-series finale in the Merry Go Round Restaurant – Advantage Machine #92 Spike/J&D.
“On a track like this was tonight, I’ll take a second behind Darland anytime. I couldn’t get into the corner on the cushion the way I wanted to, without throwing the nose, and I didn’t wanna stick it in the fence. We got a little better, and I got a good restart at the end behind Darland, but then I saw where he was entering and I just couldn’t get my car to enter up there like him. It might have been me, but we’ll say it was the car,” Clayton said with a laugh.
Clauson used a late-race slide-job in turn-three to capture the final podium spot and place himself as Clayton’s nearest competitor in “Eastern Storm” points aboard the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing – Chevy Performance #20 Beast/Kistler.
“I started on the bottom and was trying to get to the top and had the little mishap with Daron (Clayton) there, and we were really pretty lucky to keep going after that. We gathered it up, and I think our group of cars were about as good as each other, and Stockon went away a little bit at the end and Clayton beat us by him. Tonight is probably not my best kind of race track, but tonight was another strong showing for us, and we’re happy to click off a couple podiums and hopefully start to find a rhythm,” Clauson said.
Bacon snuck into fourth at the line to wrap up “Hard Charger” honors after starting 12th in the Hoffman Auto Racing – Mean Green #69 Triple X/Stanton Mopar, while Stockon seemed to be ailing as he crossed the line fifth in the Superior Tank & Trailer – Crescent Electric Supply #32 DRC/Fisher. Fast qualifier Tracy Hines finished sixth in the Hansen’s Welding – Motor City Auto Transport #4 DRC/Stanton Mopar.
