CLAYTON CAPTURES THRILLING “EASTERN STORM” OPENER AT GRANDVIEW

Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania…….Daron Clayton from Sikeston, Missouri has a reputation for crowd-pleasing high-wire acts on race tracks across the country. On Wednesday night at Grandview Speedway, the “Eastern Storm” opened up with an unbelievable display from Clayton en route to winning the 40-lap “Jesse Hockett Classic” Feature.
Polesitter Levi Jones jumped to the early lead, but it didn’t take long for Clayton to find his rhythm on the high line, as he roared by Jones off turn-four on lap 3 to take the early lead. The leaders set a torrid pace as Clayton walked away from the field. Bryan Clauson was a big mover early in the race, as he started 13th and wasted no time moving into the top-five. As he was gaining on the front two, Robert Ballou had moved into the top-five before three cars, including him, came together entering turn-one on lap 23 and left the Baldwin Brothers Racing #5 spun. He went off on the hook.
Clayton pulled out to a lead on the restart as Jones, Clauson, and fourth-running Chase Stockon negotiated lapped cars. The caution flew again on lap 26 when Kevin Thomas, Jr. and Brady Bacon made contact while racing for fifth, leaving Thomas’ car with a broken front-end.
The final restart came with 15 to go as the top-three all ran nose-to-tail. Jones came calling on the bottom, pushing Clayton to make a mistake on his tricky groove up against the wall. Clayton slipped high in turn-four on lap 27 and Jones nailed the bottom to re-take the lead coming to the line.
Clayton regrouped and found a little extra on the top shelf, flying back to the lead on lap 29, this time for good. Clauson finally moved by Jones on the outside with five to go and chased down the leader, briefly poking to the inside of Clayton for the top spot, but Clayton ran mistake-free over the final few laps as they re-encountered traffic and took the win in the Merry Go Round Restaurant – Advantage Machine #92 Spike/J&D.
“I was as high as I wanted to be, and then I saw Levi peeking in there. I figured I needed to push it a little more and see how it goes. Then I saw Clauson coming at me at the end, and I already thought I was driving my ass off, but luckily I had enough tire left that I could run a little harder. Steve Petry has basically adopted me for the week and helped us race, and without him we wouldn’t be here, so I have to thank him a lot. This is gonna be a good check to cash,” Clayton said from an animated victory lane.
Clauson came up just short in winning, but made an impressive turn-around from qualifying 13th earlier in the night to come home second in the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing – Chevy Performance #20 Beast/Kistler.
“Grandview Speedway gave us a great race track, and we were just able to knife our way through. Bob Miller is one of the best promoters we have, and I’m glad he lets us race here. We were pretty disappointed with our qualifying effort. We knew we were gonna be able to maneuver in the feature and my guys went to work on it. I hate not grabbing a win when we’re that close, but Daron did a great job at the end,” Clauson said.
Jones made a bid at another Grandview win, but his run on the bottom ended, and he had to settle for third in the Jeff’s Jam-It-In Storage – Hoosier Tire #39 Maxim/Claxton.
“Forty laps here – I’ve won two by staying on the bottom and I’ve lost one by not getting to the bottom. I thought time would be on our side, but I guess it needed to be a 50-lapper for the bottom to be the place to be tonight. As usual, Grandview gave us a great race track, and I guess we’ll just try to be a little bit better tomorrow,” Jones said.
Hunter Schuerenberg made a mad dash in the closing laps to finish off his run from 15th to fourth in the MyLocalFordStore.com – Fatheadz Eyewear #35 Mach-1/Rider, while AMSOIL National Sprint Car point leader Chase Stockon peaked at second very early in the race before coming home fifth in the Superior Tank & Trailer – Crescent Electric Supply #32 DRC/Fisher.

WEDNESDAY’S “HOCKETT CLASSIC” OPENS “EASTERN STORM”
RACES AT GRANDVIEW, PATH VALLEY, PORT ROYAL, SUSQUEHANNA
Wednesday night’s “Jesse Hockett Classic” kicks off a four-race “Eastern Storm” for the AMSOIL USAC National Sprint cars, all in Pennsylvania.
Two of the four venues involved will be hosting their initial USAC events as Chase Stockon leads the standings by just 14 points over Dave Darland.
Thursday’s race at Path Valley Speedway in Spring Run, Saturday’s race is at Port Royal Speedway and Sunday night’s finale is at Susquehanna Speedway in Newberrytown.
Bryan Clauson is the defending “Eastern Storm” Champion and is the defending winner of the “Jesse Hockett Classic.” Levi Jones owns three “Eastern Storm” titles in the six previous years, while Cole Whitt grabbed two of the titles. Jones’ six feature wins in the six years to date stand as the best, while Whitt won three times, Clauson and Chris Windom winning twice.
The 2013 AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Champion has developed into no less than an eight-way title fight, with 85 points separating the top eight drivers in the standings.
Trailing Stockon and Darland are Kevin Thomas, Jr., who recently scored three straight victories, Brady Bacon, Hunter Schuerenberg, Bryan Clauson, who won the series opener in Ocala, Fla., Robert Ballou and Tracy Hines, who scored a pair of wins in Florida.
Darland, USAC’s 1999 Sprint Car Champion, is the most recent series winner, grabbing the race at Bloomington, Ind. in May.

SCHUERENBERG VAULTS TO AMSOIL POINT LEAD;
HINES TAKES 2, CLAUSON 1 IN “WINTER DIRT GAMES IV”
Hunter Schuerenberg of Sikeston, Mo. sits atop the 2013 USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series standings after the opening events of the year at Ocala, Fla. last week.
Schuerenberg finished third, fourth and fifth in the three 30-lap “Winter Dirt Games IV” features at Bubba Raceway Park and has a four-point lead over Chase Stockon going into an April 6 race at Lawrenceburg, Ind. Stockon posted the fastest qualifying time both Thursday and Saturday.
Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. earned his 44th and 45th career USAC Sprint victories at Ocala, taking Friday and Saturday night features in his Hansen’s Welding/Motor City Auto Transport DRC/Stanton Mopar. The wins brought his all-time USAC National feature total to 85 and his 45 wins in the National Sprint Cars now tie him with Larry Dickson for third all-time behind Tom Bigelow (52) and Jack Hewitt (46).
Hines led all 30 laps Saturday to beat rookie hopeful Tyler Courtney, Stockon, Robert Ballou and Schuerenberg. On Friday, Hines passed Ballou on the final lap when Ballou had a tire go down after leading the first 29 laps. Bryan Clauson finished second ahead of Schuerenberg, Stockon and Dave Darland.
Defending series champion Clauson emerged victorious Thursday after a race-long battle with Darland. Darland led 27 of the first 28 laps before Clauson went to the front on lap 29 in his Chevrolet Performance/Curb Records Beast/Kistler Chevy. Brady Bacon took third ahead of Schuerenberg and Ballou.

6TH “COPPER ON DIRT” SHOWCASES SPRINTS & MIDGETS
FRIDAY, SATURDAY AT CANYON SPEEDWAY PARK
The AMSOIL USAC CRA Sprint Cars and USAC Western Midgets open their 2013 campaigns in this weekend’s 6th “Copper on Dirt” events at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Ariz.
Defending USAC National Drivers Champion Bryan Clauson and five-time consecutive USAC/CRA Sprint Car king Mike Spencer, plus Western Midget Champion Shannon McQueen are all gearing up for the 1/3-mile dirt oval, which also sports West Coast Late Model and IMCA Modified competition.
Clauson is expected to compete in both events of the USAC “doubleheader” after posting an AMSOIL USAC National Sprint win at Ocala, Fla. last Thursday night. Hunter Schuerenberg, USAC’s brand-new AMSOIL National Sprint Car leader after three “top-four” finishes at Ocala, also is expected to compete at Peoria.
Clauson has now won at least one USAC National victory every year since his debut in 2005. McQueen posted more than a dozen “top-10” finishes on her way to the 2012 Western Midget crown. She also was the recipient of the prestigious “Kara Hendrick Award” from Lyn St. James’ Women in the Winners Circle last year. Spencer became the first USAC driver in history to win five consecutive series titles with his 2012 championship. He scored nine victories during the 2012 CRA campaign.
Clauson owns five USAC victories at Canyon Speedway Park, including three already this year! He also scored two USAC National wins in 2011.
Last November’s USAC Midget feature at Canyon Speedway Park went to Kyle Larson.

USAC’S TRUE SPEED “TRIPLE CROWN” GUIDELINES ANNOUNCED
Due to the unique USAC National Championship structure in 2013, with separate USAC National Midget Pavement and Dirt Champions to be crowned, guidelines regarding the USAC True Speed Triple Crown Championship have been restructured and announced. The career achievement is acknowledged with a specially-crafted championship ring courtesy of True Speed Enterprises and USAC Triple Crown Champion Tony Stewart, who became the first to “sweep” the honors in a single year in 1995.
To enter the exclusive club of USAC Triple Crown Champions, a driver during his career must possess an overall championship in the three National categories, Silver Crown, Sprint and Midget.
Maintaining the integrity of the prestige of the USAC Triple Crown, which has only been achieved by five drivers in USAC‘s history, drivers in the 2013 National Midget series will earn eligibility meeting two criteria.
First, a driver must win either the dirt or pavement championship. In addition, the driver must compile the most points in total Midget competition. For the sole purpose of establishing this Triple Crown criteria, an overall National Midget Championship points tally will be maintained, utilizing total points combined on dirt and pavement.
Pancho Carter became the first driver to earn the Triple Crown designation, winning the Midget title in 1972, the Sprint in 1974 and 1976 and the Silver Crown in 1978. Tony Stewart won the 1994 Midget title and added all three championships in 1995. Dave Darland followed, winning the Silver Crown in 1997, Sprint in 1999 and Midget in 2001 and 2002. In 2001 J.J. Yeley won the Sprint title, came back in 2002 with the Silver Crown championship and then won all three in 2003. Jerry Coons Jr. joined the illustrious list with the 2006 and 2007 Midget titles and the 2008 Sprint and Silver Crown championships.
Currently active USAC drivers with two of the three Triple Crown legs to their credit include Tracy Hines (Silver Crown and Sprint), Levi Jones (Silver Crown and Sprint), Bryan Clauson (Sprint and Midget), Bobby East (Silver Crown and Midget) and Jason Leffler (Silver Crown and Midget).
