STORYBOOK CLASSIC: David Gravel wins Jason Johnson Classic
Gravel wins at Lake Ozark Speedway, his 10th win of the year with Jason Johnson Racing

ELDON, MO – Oct. 19, 2019 – Jason Johnson had a black book of goals he’d like to accomplish. One was to promote a race.

On Saturday night at Lake Ozark Speedway it was checked off Johnson's list. His widow, Bobbi Johnson, promoted the Jason Johnson Classic with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.

The event started with rain but had a storybook ending.

Like a wave rising in the ocean before crashing down, the sea of people filling the grandstands simultaneously rose to their feet and applauded as David Gravel piloted the Jason Johnson Racing No. 41 car to Victory Lane.

Family, friends and team members – all with smiles and some with tears – flooded Victory Lane to congratulate Gravel and Johnson on the victory – reminiscent of Gravel’s Knoxville Nationals win in August.

“Just couldn’t have been a better night,” said a jubilated Gravel. “We’ve had two weeks this year that are storybook weeks. To get this done and win tonight… it might look like it’s fixed, but it isn’t. Sheldon (Haudenschild) made me work for that race.”

The Watertown, Conn. driver was fast all night, winning his Drydene Heat race – holding off a hard charging Haudenschild to do so – and finishing fourth in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash – won by Jason Sides, who also held off Haudenschild for the win.

When the 41-lap Feature when green Sides rocketed ahead of the field and threw his King Racing Products No. 7S car to the high side. He committed to the line in his pursuit for the win. If someone was going to pass him the bottom was their only option.

Haudenschild followed in line with Sides, riding the high side, trying to hunt him down. Behind them, Gravel worked his way by Brian Brown for third on Lap two and reeled in the top two every lap.

Sides got loose off turn two on Lap seven, allowing Haudenschild to close to his tail tank and Gravel to charge toward them both.

When the trio reached turn three Gravel slung his Mesilla Valley Transportation No. 41 car to the bottom of the track, sliding by Haudenschild and Sides for the lead. Gravel powered in front of them off turn four to officially take the lead on Lap eight, while Haudenschild also snuck by Sides to take second.

The battle was now Gravel versus Haudenschild. Both favored the cushion around the 1/3-mile speedway. Haudenschild’s NOS Energy Drink No. 17 was utilizing it better, though. He caught Gravel on Lap 14 and dove underneath him in turn three to steal the lead away from him.

Haudenschild led the next 11 laps, with Gravel keeping pressure from behind, before a caution spoiled the Wooster, Ohio driver’s night.

On the restart with 17 laps to go Haudenschild slid over the cushion in turn two and Gravel pounced. He charged underneath Haudenschild down the backstretch and sailed his car into turn three, gapping Haudenschild by two car lengths.

“Being on the outside I kind of pinched him (Haudenschild) a little bit,” Gravel said. “You’ve got to do those things to win races. I think I just had a little bit of an advantage on him on the double-file restart and was able to get the lead.”

Haudenschild kept Gravel in sight for the rest of the race but wasn’t able to put together another strong enough run to catch him.

“I would have liked to have raced in traffic a little bit more,” Haudenschild said. “I think it mixes it up and made a little bit more possibilities. When we were in clean air we were just ripping around there and waiting until we got traffic to get anything.”

Logan Schuchart had his own exciting race, charging from 11th to third – his second podium finish in-a-row.

“There in the beginning it was pretty interesting, we were battling back there with Brad (Sweet) and Donny (Schatz). That’s something you don’t want to get in between,” Schuchart said. “It was a good race. We were able to get up there on some restarts, pass some cars when we needed to.”

Sweet and Schatz – who are first and second, respectively, in the championship points ­­– battled around each other most of the night. Sweet had the better night, racing from 12th to fourth, while Schatz raced from 14th to eighth. Sweet is now 32 points ahead of Schatz with only four races left this season – only two before the World Finals.

Gravel’s win was his 10th of the year – first at Lake Ozark Speedway – and 49th career World of Outlaws win.

With Gravel and Schatz having 10 wins and Sweet having 16, it’s the first time since 2000 that there are at least three drivers with 10 or more wins in the Series.

“To hit double digits this year is great,” Gravel said about his win total. “It’s a hard feat to do on the World of Outlaws tour. For us to do that, it feels awesome.

“This is for Jason’s family. Put a smile on their faces tonight and hopefully for the whole week coming up."

Bobbi Johnson called Gravel and the JJR team a “dream team” with how well they have meshed this year and the success they’ve had. Their victory helped put a period on the storybook ending for the inaugural Jason Johnson Classic – a big goal checked off Jason’s list.

“Tomorrow when you sit back and realize and think about all of the man hours and all of the time and all of the help and preparation, there’s a whole team that put on this deal and stood behind me,” Johnson said. “Just to feel like I checked off one of Jason’s things he always wanted to do… he had a black book and there’s a couple of things in there that’s not checked off, so that’s what I’m trying to do next.”

VICTORIOUS ONCE AGAIN: Donny Schatz wins with Ford at Lakeside Speedway, cuts into points lead
Schatz puts a Ford powered World of Outlaws Sprint Car back in Victory Lane for the first time in 21 years

KANSAS CITY, KS – Oct. 18, 2019 – When Ford wanted to win Le Mans against the unstoppable Ferrari team it turned to legendary car designer Carroll Shelby, his team and his ace driver Ken Miles to get the job done.

Spoiler: They won.

A similar mentality was used when Ford wanted to return to Sprint Car racing with a new 410 engine, after a more than 20-year absence in the sport. It turned to NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, his team and his ace driver Donny Schatz.

Friday night at Lakeside Speedway, for the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown, Schatz brought a Ford powered World of Outlaws Sprint Car back to Victory Lane for the first time since August 26, 1998 when Jeff Swindell won at Southern Oregon Speedway.

It was the new Ford FPS 410 engine’s third appearance in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series – Schatz finished on the podium in his first two races with it.

“It’s pretty rewarding,” said Schatz about winning with the new Ford engine. “Sometimes you have to do things in life that are off the beaten path. That’s what this whole program is. They got a lot of dedication to it. Tony (Stewart) does. And what Tony asks us to do we do. Here we are.

“Rick (Warner, Schatz’s former crew chief who helped develop the FPS 410) has put a lot of time and blood and sweat and countless sleepless nights on it and to bring it out and to have two podiums at Williams Grove and a win tonight is huge… It’s going to be a live and learn experience. Tonight, it was a live on it. The next night we might be learning. But they did a great job and that’s what we’re here to do, have fun and win races with it.”

Schatz and his Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing had to fight for the win all night. He finished second in his Drydene Heat race to Logan Schuchart, who was about half of a second faster than everyone else. Schatz then finished fifth in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash and had to change a motor after.

The motor wasn’t at fault for the change, Schatz said. It wasn’t sealed properly and leaked oil.

With a new FPS 410 installed for the Feature, Schatz put its full potential on display throughout the 30 laps.

The beginning of the race was plagued with multiple cautions for accidents and poor restarts. Brian Brown, in the FVP No. 21 car, led the field through it all. Daryn Pittman, David Gravel, Logan Schuchart, Brad Sweet and Donny Schatz battled amongst themselves for position in the short runs between cautions.

Schatz made his way from fifth to second by Lap 10.

A reg flag for Matt Juhl flipping on Lap 12 brought out an Open Red, allowing teams to fuel their cars and make adjustments.

When the Feature when back green Schatz didn’t waste time testing the limits of his new engine to pass Brown for the lead.

Brown hung on to the high side of the track through turns one and two, while Schatz searched for grip low. What he found allowed him to hammer the throttle and exit the corner side-by-side with Brown.

They drag raced down the backstretch and remained in line through turns three and four. However, Brown couldn’t match the lightspeed launch Schatz got off turn four. The Toco Warranty No. 15 shot to the lead on Lap 13.

Brown, of Grain Valley, Mo., was hungry for another hometown win, though. Continuing to favor the top line, he built momentum off turn two and charged to the outside of Schatz down the backstretch. They again raced side-by-side through turns three and four, but the FPS 410 continued to conjure remarkable speed off the corner.

Schatz took the lead and ran away with it. He found himself more than a second ahead of Brown a few laps after passing him.

Schuchart eventually charged his way to second by Lap 20 and Sweet moved into third by Lap 27. Time was running out to catch Schatz, though. Lap traffic became a factor in the closing laps, but before either driver could try to use it to their advantage a caution came out for Ian Madsen slowing in turn four.

When the green flag flew again, Schatz was gone. The 10-time Series champion sprinted away from the field and had almost a second lead over Schuchart when he crossed the finish line.

“I would’ve liked to see what would have happened if we kept going or had some lap traffic,” Schuchart said. “This is a great team. An awesome year. We would’ve liked to have gotten the win… But still a great night.”

Sweet’s third-place finish allowed Schatz to chip away at his points lead. The Fargo, N.D. driver is now 24 points behind Sweet, of Grass Valley, Calif., with five races left this season – three before the World Finals in November.

“We’re happy with a podium run,” Sweet said. “We were just a little bit off and fighting a few things. We’ll take a podium with the NAPA Auto Parts car and move on to tomorrow night.”

Schatz’s victory was his 10th of the year – 293rd career Series win – and first win in almost a month.

“These guys, it’s incredible what they do,” Schatz said about his team. “The race car was awesome. Yeah, we got to make changes to it for the extra power and a little bit extra weight, but they do an awesome job. It’s great to finally get a win again.”

REALITY OF A DREAM: Christopher Bell wins at Tri-State Speedway as driver, owner
Bell wins an eventful night in Haubstadt, Brad Sweet extends points lead

HAUBSTADT, IN – Oct. 13, 2019 – After winning $100,000 in April through NASCAR’s Dash 4 Cash, Christopher Bell already knew what he would like to do with the money: purchase his own Sprint Car.

Six months later, the Norman, Okla. driver parked his self-owned No. 21 car in Victory Lane for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series’ Sunday night event at Tri-State Speedway.

The victory was his fifth career World of Outlaws win – first as an owner in the Series – and first win at the speedway.

“So, I had four Outlaw wins coming into today and I promise you those four Outlaw wins would be in my, arguably top-five, definitely top-ten of my favorite wins of my life,” said an elated Bell. “To get number five here with my own race car and a group of friends working on this thing is really special.”

The Indiana race was Bell’s fourth time in his own car, which he built with friend Chad Boat. He already had one win in it, too. However, throughout the night, you would’ve thought he’d been racing it for years. Bell even claimed he wasn’t good at the quarter-mile track.

He first dispelled that allegation with strong runs in his Drydene Heat race, where he finished second, and the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash, where he finished third. In both races he had a car capable of charging to the lead but ran out of laps to do so.

In the Feature, Bell had 40 laps to accomplish his mission.

Sweet jumped to the lead at the start of the race with Brent Marks and Bell in tow. However, five cautions – which separately involved drivers such as David Gravel, Sheldon Haudenschild and Donny Schatz – in the first 12 laps hindered the top three from finding a rhythm.

Bell highlighted his speed in that time span, sliding by Marks for second during a short run in between cautions.

After the accident on Lap 12, the race went caution free for the remaining 28 laps. With Schatz mired in the back of the field, Sweet was poised to have a strong points day, especially if he could secure the win. However, Bell wasn’t sympathetic to his cause.

Both almost saw their winning desire vanish on the restart with 28 laps to go. Third-place Kerry Madsen dove underneath Bell and Sweet in turn three, eyeing the lead. The Australian couldn’t find the grip to exit the corner ahead of them and fell back to third by turn one.

The battle was then Sweet versus Bell. Sweet ran high, while Bell slung his car around the bottom of the track, creeping closer and closer to the NAPA Auto Parts No. 49 car every lap. And Sweet knew it.

On Lap 16 the Californian stole Bell’s line, running the bottom in turns three and four. Bell countered his move and switched to the high side of the track.

The beneficiary of the swap proved to be Bell. He got a run off turn four, propelling him to Sweet’s rear bumper down the front stretch. He stayed high into turn one, as Sweet went low and, again, charged off the corner with momentum. This time, he was able to use it to dart underneath Sweet into turn three and clear him for the lead by turn four, officially taking it on Lap 18.

“I felt good all night long and I knew our car was really close,” Bell said. “Honestly, we didn’t really change very much all night long. We kept getting those short stints and I felt fine. I felt like I just needed to get some time underneath of us and get going.”

The race was then Bell’s to lose. He distanced himself from Sweet, even with lap traffic creating an unpredictable obstacle course in front of him. Sweet began to fade by the halfway point, losing second to Madsen and eventually falling to fifth. Madsen didn’t have anything for Bell, but another threat behind him did.

After finding himself at the back of the field due to being involved in an early caution, Haudenschild moved his way into fifth with 19 laps to go. He was third with nine laps to go and second with five laps to go. The NOS Energy Drink No. 17 was an unstoppable bullet. But time was not in his favor and Bell worked lap traffic with ease.

However, worry did set in for Bell in the closing laps, unsure how his car would handle as the track changed and if he would have enough fuel to finish.

“This track just changes so much,” Bell said. “I’ve never gone good here before in my life. This is the first time I’ve come to Haubstadt and been competitive. I learned a lot today.”

By the time Bell sped past the waving checkered flag, he had a 3.7 second lead over Haudenschild.

“I set us back tonight with qualifying and getting in that mess in four, just really put us behind,” Haudenschild said. “After I did that my goal was to get back to where I was and go from there. On this type of track we know we’re going to have restarts. Just tried to get track position as early and quick as I could on those restarts and just try to pick them off after that.”

Madsen rounded out the podium with his brother Ian Madsen finishing fourth and Sweet ended the night fifth. After being involved in two accidents, Schatz managed a 13th-place finish but is now 30 points behind Sweet.

Wins are all that matter to Bell when it comes to racing with the World of Outlaws. Every one of them he cherishes, he said, especially when they’re with friends.

“Everyone works their tails off on it, but it’s a lot of fun because we’re all friends,” Bell said. “Just very thankful to be here driving this thing.”

RIGHT ATTITUDE: Logan Schuchart conquers Eldora Speedway for second time
Schuchart earned his eighth career win of the season at Eldora, doubling his win total from the start of the season

ROSSBURG, OH – Sept. 27, 2019 – Logan Schuchart entered Friday’s race at Eldora Speedway with an attitude. He felt like the half-mile speedway owned him.

He finished second for the third time in-a-row during the May event at the track. During the four July races there he finished third, third, fourth and second at the Kings Royal.

Schuchart craved a second win at the iconic track – his first came in 2017. He was a shark that sensed blood in the water. No one was going to keep him from his target. He and his Shark Racing team made sure of it.

Aside from Hot Laps, which were ran twice due to a two-and-a-half-hour rain delay before Qualifying, Schuchart won everything he could involving a sprint car Friday night. He set Quick Time, won his Drydene Heat race, drew the pole for the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash, won the Dash and led all 30 laps in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Feature – earning his eighth victory of the season.

“This is definitely one, coming to Eldora, is one I always look forward to,” Schuchart said. “It’s been really good to us. We just haven’t been able to win one. So, to end our season at Eldora and win one is cool. Especially since I’ve had so many good runs and haven’t won one since 2017. It’s cool to win at this place any chance you get.”

While the Hanover, Pa.-native dominated the BeFour the Crowns Showdown, a Texan made him work for it. Aaron Reutzel – coming off a podium finish with the World of Outlaws at Jacksonville Speedway and setting the quickest lap in the second round of Hot Laps – hunted Schuchart throughout the Feature, in search of his first Series win at the speedway.

Schuchart launched ahead of the field on the initial start of the Feature with second-place Carson Macedo on his tail and Reutzel making his way to third. Before any of them could build momentum, the red flag came out before the completion of the first lap for Wayne Johnson flipping in turn three.

When the race restarted, Schuchart again shot to the lead with Macedo in pursuit. However, Reutzel put an end to Macedo’s chase in the first corner. He darted to the high side in turn one and charged off turn two with the ferocity of a speeding bullet, pulling alongside Macedo down the backstretch.

Macedo, a rookie, and Reutzel, a part-time driver in the Series, raced wheel-to-wheel for a lap before Reutzel outran Macedo into turn three and stole the runner-up spot on the second lap. Schuchart was half of a straightaway ahead of Reutzel. However, that gap vanished a few seconds later.

Another red flag came out for Brady Bacon wrecking in turn four on Lap two. It was the last time the field had to slow for an accident, though.

On the final restart of the night, with 28 laps to go, Schuchart pulled ahead of Reutzel by about two car lengths into the first turn and grew his lead to more than a second shortly after. By Lap nine Schuchart found himself in heavy lap traffic. Exactly what Reutzel needed.

As the Drydene No. 1s navigated its way through a maze of cars, the Folkens Bros. No. 87 of Reutzel crept closer every lap. Near the halfway point of the Feature, Reutzel found himself feet away from Schuchart’s bumper. But before he could attempt a pass, Schuchart found clean air and pulled away from him again.

The two drivers were an accordion for the remainder of the race. Reutzel would close on Schuchart and then Schuchart would pull away.

“At one time I thought we were going to be able to pass him,” Reutzel said about racing Schuchart. “Where I was making time around the bottom, that kind of went away for me. I started searching around and found sliding myself was pretty good. I got back to him one time, we got to a lap car that was trying to unlap himself or something and I was never able to get by that lap car and just kind of sat there the rest of the race. My car started to go away a little bit at the end, so that was the end of that.”

Having raced with Reutzel before and knowing his style, Schuchart anticipated where he thought the Texan might run and made sure he didn’t leave a door open for him.

“I was trying not to get held up too much or bonsai too many lap cars,” Schuchart said. “I figured if I did do that, he’d be close. I knew he would be, most likely on the top. Aaron is very fast, but a lot of the races that he wins he’s on the top. I was running through the middle and felt like I was slowing down a little and tried to get back to the top as quick as I could to not give him a chance to zoom around the outside of me.”

Schuchart’s plan worked. He held off Reutzel – who had to hold off a fast approaching Sheldon Haudenschild in the closing laps – and won his second career World of Outlaws race at Eldora Speedway.

“To have a year like this. To win races with the World of Outlaws is very, very tough,” Schuchart said. “To win eight of them and get another one here at Eldora, it means a lot to myself. I know it means a lot to everybody else.”

Before the start of the season Schuchart had eight career wins over a five-year span. Now, he’s doubled that statistic in one season. He and his Shark Racing team definitely have an attitude this year. An attitude to win.

He wasn’t the only driver with a big night at Eldora. Brad Sweet earned the KSE Hard Charger award by starting 17th and finishing sixth, and he took the points lead from 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz – who finished 17th. Sweet now leads Schatz by four points.

CAPITALIZING ON THE MOMENT: Carson Macedo wins thrilling show at Jacksonville Speedway

Macedo brings Kyle Larson Racing its fourth World of Outlaws win of the season

JACKSONVILLE, IL – Sept. 25, 2019 – Rookie Carson Macedo knows if he wants to be an established World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series driver and stick around the Series for a while, he needs to win races.

That mentality was ingrained in the young Lemoore, Calif.-native Wednesday night at Jacksonville Speedway when he out dueled Sheldon Haudenschild and Brad Sweet in an elbows up brawl to earn his fourth victory of the year.

“I can’t say enough about this (Kyle Larson Racing) team,” Macedo said. “Fourth win this year. I’m super stoked. Happy for them. Happy to get wins. That’s what it takes out here.”

Macedo was fast all night in his Chevrolet Accessories No. 2 car, qualifying second, winning his Drydene Heat race and finishing second in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash. However, Haudenschild was always one step ahead. The Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing driver set Quick Time, won his Drydene Heat race and won the Dash over Macedo by four seconds.

The two young guns of the Series – in their first Feature race at the quarter-mile Jacksonville Speedway ­­– were set to duel. And they did.

Neither was willing to sacrifice an inch on the initial start, staying wheel to wheel as they crept toward the white start line. When it came time to hammer the throttle Haudenschild gave his more love than needed, showing the complete under belly of his NOS Energy Drink No. 17 as he powered to the flag stand. That allowed Macedo to get a run on the Wooster, Ohio-native into the first corner and take the lead.

Haudenschild dove underneath Macedo into turn three and nosed in front of him through turn four. However, he did another wheelie on the exit of the turn, allowing Macedo to charged back out front. Haudenschild would not let the Californian get away, though. He stayed on his bumper down the straightaways and could power to his inside every corner.

The quarter-mile track was proving to be fun for some and tricky for others, as several cars bounced off the cushion in turn four or over throttled their way into the corner causing them spin – or nearly do so. The fastest line was around the top, against the cushion – a line most comfortable for Macedo and Haudenschild.

Two cautions came out in the first 12 laps of the 40-lap Feature. Macedo was able to launch ahead of Haudenschild on both restarts, but the Ohio driver continued to pester Macedo each lap. The Kyle Larson Racing car was rarely out of reach.

On Lap 14, Macedo did a quick wheel stand off turn four, allowing Haudenschild, with a full steam of momentum, to throw a slide job into turn one and exit turn two with the lead.

Three more cautions came out between Lap 18 and 21 for drivers either spinning or coming to a stop on the track. On the restart with 19 laps to go, Haudenschild rocketed out front. Macedo spun his tires and got passed by Shane Stewart for second.

Macedo wasn’t willing to let the win slip away. To continue to establish himself, he needed it.

Finding grip on the bottom of the speedway, Macedo charged his way back by Stewart and looked to find his rhythm to catch Haudenschild. He didn’t have to put too much effort into it though. Another caution came out a few laps later for several cars colliding in turn four and blocking the track.

On the restart with 15 laps to go, Macedo was now pestering Haudenschild. He poked his nose underneath him each corner, ready to capitalize on any mistake Haudenschild made. And with 14 laps to go Haudenschild made one.

He slid his car too far up the track in turn four, hammering the cushion with his right rear tire and lifting the front of his car off the ground. With a clean run around the bottom, Macedo raced by the upset NOS Energy Drink car and reclaimed the lead.

“You get through there (turn four) really nice if you hit it right, but a couple of times you get tight on the right rear and get into it too much and throw your front end into, so you just had to be really careful,” Macedo said. “Get your entry right. Make sure you had the car turned enough and enough throttle to get through there on the cushion. My car was really good. Especially late in the race. I felt like I kept gaining momentum and gaining speed. That’s what you want.”

While Macedo and Haudenschild continued their close battle for the lead, Sweet, Aaron Reutzel and Donny Schatz were slowly making their way to the front. After Stewart spun, with 10 laps to go, Sweet moved into the position with Reutzel also moving up to fourth and Schatz to fifth. Four laps later, heartbreak for Haudenschild. He too spun, bringing out the caution.

With six laps to go, Macedo now found himself having to hold off Sweet ­– who moved up from seventh to second ­– Reutzel – who moved up from eighth to third – and Schatz – who charged from 17th to fourth.

It proved to be a task he was up to. He pulled away from the field on the restart and comfortably cruised his way to his first win Jacksonville Speedway victory – in his first official start at the track. Sweet remained second and Reutzel rounded out the podium. Haudenschild ended the night 15th.

Macedo credits some of his success to having grown up in California where there are several small bullring sized tracks like Jacksonville Speedway.

“Growing up there, you either get good on small tracks or you get beat because that’s a lot of what we have,” said Macedo, who won on the quarter-mile Silver Dollar Speedway in March. “I guess it just helps to be from California when you go to places like these.”

Sweet, of Grass Valley, Calif., also benefited by picking up another podium finish and continuing to chip away at Schatz’s points lead. The 10-time Series champion now leads Sweet by 18 points.

“It was a bit of a marathon, but we’ll take a second-place run,” Sweet said. “We had a lot of battling to get where we got to. A lot of missing wrecks. Missing some spinning cars. And avoiding contact. It was nice to get the finish.”

Coming into the season Macedo’s goal was to win a few races. Now, having exceeded that goal, his latest win helps he and his team realize their ultimate goal.

“We’re building,” Macedo said. “This is a five-year, six, seven, eight-year plan to try and be at the top at some point. That’s what we’re trying to do. To be out here winning races and build toward next year… it’s all building blocks. We couldn’t be happier.”
