Posted by: | CommentsAccord, NY - Accord Speedway Initiates Changes As Month Of May Begins With Arkel Motors Night
By: Steve Pados, Accord Speedway Media
The Tri-State area saw many speedways fall victim to the unpredictable spring weather last week including the Accord Speedway. With the racing activity being scrubbed out for the evening, Promoters Gary and Donna Palmer addressed some important issues the drivers and owners brought forth at some of the pitside driver meetings. With that being said, some changes to the rules and an additional racing division will meet the great Accord Speedway racing fans as the month of May restarts the speedway schedule at the pristine quarter mile facility this coming Friday evening, May 6th. The evening of speed will be sponsored by longtime speedway sponsor Arkel Motors, who also sponsor the Pure Stock racing division at the speedway. Website: www.arkelmotors.com
The changes in the speedway rules will reflect to the now combined Open and Crate Sportsman division. After two weeks of the season and some major concerns by the drivers, Promoter Gary Palmer remarked, "The Crate Sportsman drivers and owners were not enthusiastic about the combined division so we haven taken a long look at it and have come up with some changes we feel will provide more balance and level out the competition within the class."
Starting with the Friday event, the weights have been adjusted with a 2350 pound weight for the Crate motors, 2450 pounds for the Open motors and 2500 pounds for the Open motors with ported heads. Accord Speedway follows the OCFS Crate rules. Hunt's seals are not required and Hoosier Tires will be allowed for the first two appearances of a new driver competing at the speedway.
The additional change is for a new division at the speedway. After handling and addressing many requests, Starting with the May 6th event, a Rookie Sportsman division will be added to the existing race schedule. This division is targeted for true rookie drivers who have transitioned into Sportsman racing and have not competed or have captured a Sportsman division win to date, no chips required.
The Palmer Family came off an excellent 2015 racing season and is looking forward to another successful season at Accord although the weather has not been overly friendly during the early portion of the 2016 schedule. Seven divisions of racing will greet the fans on Friday evening with the United Pump & Tank sponsored Modifieds, Healey Brothers Group Sportsman, Arkel Motors Pure Stocks, WRWD Junior Slingshots, Want Ad Digest Outlaw Slingshots and the Ruge's Performance Northeast Wingless Sprint Cars. Much interest has centered around the new sprint car series as the division was introduced last year and has gained considerable attention for drivers who are seeking their entry into open wheel competition but doing so in an affordable fashion. Drivers who have won thus far are "The Young Outlaw" Jesse James Bartelson who was victorious on opening night and "The Layton Laser" Brody Adamsky who dominated the action on the secondweek of racing. With more cars being completed in some of the local shops, the new division will be stepping into new territory with each week of the season. Former Hamlin Speedway 600 Sprint Champion, "The Conductor" Bobby Butler has informed track management he will be making a visit to the speedway in the near future.
Five 4-Cylinder Enduro events remain in place at the speedway for 2016 with the next event taking place on May 20th with $2,000.00 going to the winner, $750.00 to second place and $500.00 to third place based on a fifty car minimum. Emmanuel's Marketplace is the sponsor for the six event series. The racing in the past has been wild and zany as the fireballers cowboy up when the green flag drops. George Zeininger has been at the head of the class for many of the Enduro events and captured the first event on April 22nd.
Racing is on tap every Friday night from April through September. Pit Gates open at 4:30; Spectator Gates open at 5:00; Hot Laps are at 6:30 and the racing begins at 7 PM. The Palmer Family in keeping true to their racing fans will show no increase in admission at the gate with admission for Adults $14.00; Seniors $12.00 (65+); Children $3.00 (11+ under) Indoor Seating $20.00; Family four pack special: 2 Adults + 2 Children and $20.00 in Food Vouchers for $44.00 (a savings of $10.00). The Hamlin Speedway Is The "Pearl" In The Poconos
HAMLIN SPEEDWAY NEWS
Posted by: | CommentsHamlin, PA - Hamlin, PA - Hamlin Speedway Opens With Spectacular Eight Feature Event Card
By: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
The 2016 racing season at the Hamlin Speedway got underway on Saturday and the green and stand on the gas sign were all that was needed as a great collection of veteran and first time performers wasted no time in displaying their style and guile on the 1/5th mile clay oval speedway. Successful promoters Randy and Denise Smith ushered in their eleventh season at the Hamlin facility with an opening night filled with spectacular racing action. The Smith Family and Staff welcomed in a convoy of 125 talented racers from a surrounding five-state area to their premier short track facility located in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. The opening day event was chillier than expected as the night time chill in the air (40 degrees) had the standing room only crowd on hand seeking jackets, blankets, and plenty of hot beverages to keep warm. The opening night crowd was treated to an old-fashioned donnybrook of high-flying action on the freshly clayed and banked 1/5 mile racing facility and the lightening fast action allowed for the talented daredevil racing roster to use all of the available speed lanes to present a great evening of racing entertainment. The eight feature event racing card and time trials went off as scheduled and the non-stop racing action was completed at 10:46 and when was all said and done eight elated winners found there way into Hamlin Speedway victory circle for the traditional pomp and circumstance.
The Smith Family enters the 2016 racing season for their eleventh year in control of the Hamlin facility they painstakingly resurrected in 2006 after the speedway abruptly closed in the middle of the 2005 racing season. The unparalleled great racing action and the tremendous support from the entire racing community has earmarked just how popular the small car racing has become in recent years and lends credence to the fact the Hamlin Speedway has become the premier racing stop on Saturday nights to witness side by side racing the way it is meant to be. With the great opening night event, the 2016 racing season has all indications for being another superlative journey in racing for the Smith Family and the driving stars and car owners and sponsors who support the facility.
The extended hot-lap sessions opened the day's events as the drivers were given ample opportunity to dial in their cars for the evening of racing. The track proved to be quick as the drivers promptly began flirting with the existing one lap track records. The hot lap sessions lasted an hour and allowed the new and veteran drivers an opportunity to test the new racing surface and the great field of cars on hand never skipped a beat as they dug their right rear wheels into the rich Pocono clay that was in real good condition despite the always frigid weather the Poconos receives during the winter months. The time trails determined the starting format for the evening of racing that was to follow.
The seven headline divisions found the 28 entries for the Rookie 600 Sprints broken into two feature events based on time to allow the rookie drivers equal seat time and to become acquainted with the speedway. Justin Hartz and AJ Hobbs were victorious in the two events. Defending track champions were able to strut their stuff as Pat Bealer captured the 270 Sprint main and Tyler Peet, a two time Junior Slingshot champion, stepped into his first All Star Slingshot main event and came away with his first win in his major step up the racing ladder. Brandon Azzalina base-lined his way to a super win in the 600 Sprint finale. Jared Silfee captured the Junior Slingshot main event while Wes Hearn was triumphant in the Super Slingers. Series sponsor Bill Dianella withstood a strong challenge from many time champion Joel Smith to record his first Hamlin win in the Hampton RV and Trailer Sales Stage One Modified headliner.
The starting field of sixteen Junior Slingshots took off in their scheduled 20-lap feature jaunt. New York talent Hunter Lapp, who already has three wins under his belt for 2016, out-dragged Jared Silfee into turn one and led the first 11 laps of the event. The pair raced into lapped traffic and Lapp took the low road and Silfee the high road. The high road proved to be the one less traveled and Silfee came out of turn two as the leader. Silfee would go on to win with Lapp in second place. Reese Nowotarski was third followed by JJ Rice and Cole Stangle. Shelby McLaughlin, Jake Mason, Adam Buchel, Emily Fleming and Ty Kelly completed the top ten.
The first Rookie 600 Sprint main event found Brett Altemose leading the first two laps before yielding to a high-flying, low-riding Justin Hartz. Hartz showed tremendous poise as he led the rest of the way to capture the win and holding off hard driving Scott Slater Jr and John Vreeland who would finish second and third respectively. Geordan Marrero and Altemose completed the top five. The second Rookie 600 Sprint main found Ryan Mohr leading for two laps until he ended up facing traffic when he spun out. On the restart the sledding was tough as the field was narrowed down with a double flip in turn three that eliminated four cars. Jakson Ring led for two laps after the restart and AJ Hobbs took over and led the rest of the way. Mikey Smith rallied to claim runner-up honors with Ring in third, Dylan Martin fourth and Noah Zielinski fifth.
The Super Slinger feature found Wes Hearn and Dale Kober resume their on-going battles and it would be Kober leading the first 16 laps. Hearn began working the baseline of the speedway to inch his way around Kober. Hearn seized the moment and took over the lead and would race to victory followed closely by Kober. Ryan Lacoe was third with Steve Pirone and Tom Van Pelt following.
The 600 Sprint main was star caliber from the drop of the green flag as Pat Bealer charged to the front for the first four laps of the event with Brandon Azzalina challenging. Azzalina drove down to the baseline and took over the lead on lap five. Once in front, "The A-Team" put on a dazzling drive that found him getting under the 12-second mark as the race wore on. Azzalina would score the win with Bealer in second, Joel Smith third, Chad Sandt fourth and Danny Buccafusca nailing down fifth in his return to the speedway. Defending track champion Colin White headed up the second five with Doug Snyder, Mick D'Agostino, Sam Kravitsky and Ryan Neil following.
"Deuce" Glenn Macomber led the first five laps of the 270 Sprint main. "The Icon" Pat Bealer blasted by him and would lead the next four laps when a caution came out and it was determined Bealer had jumped the previous restart and the ruling dropped him back two positions. On the restart, Macomber would lead for four laps but began suffering some problems that found Bealer slipping by and Macomber dropping out the event. Bealer would the remaining laps to score the win with Robbie Watson, Brittany Erlsten, Kyle Ferrucci and Shawna Winters completing the top five.
The Hampton RV and Trailer Stage One Modifieds found Bill Dianella grab up the lead and he would lead all twenty laps but not before holding off a talented group of drivers seeking to slip past him. The defending track champion "The Nickel Man" Joel Smith put the pressure on but it would be Dianella scoring his first Hamlin win. Smith was the runner-up with Jeff Hineline, Joel Price and Steve Darling completing the top five. The second five was headed up Damon Paul with Chloe Andreas, Mike Marold Jr, Tim Howell and Cole Stangle following.
The All Star Slingshot main event saw an elite 24-car field take the green flag in the curtain closer for the evening. Tyler Peet shot out of the blocks like a cannon at the start of the event and would establish the quickest times of the evening for the Slingshot division. Peet would never be seriously challenged and would go on and record his first All Star Slingshot win at the speedway. Brett Bieber would hustle hard to runner-up status with Taylor Mills, Wes Hearn and Justin Mills completing the top five. The second five places were headed up by Dale Kober, Chris Kurtz, Austin Silfee, Mike McLaughlin (from 24th) and Russell Benke III.
Pearl Jams:
The new season of racing at Hamlin kicked-off in spectacular fashion and the loyal fan base came out in full force as the stands were packed for the evening of events and the concession stands doing a brisk business all evening long.
A tip of the fedora to Randy Smith and crew for working diligently on the speedway throughout the evening to make the speedway racy throughout all of the events.
The speedway has an aggressive season of special events planned for the 2016 season and small car division racing is definitely the wave of the future and truly happening at the Hamlin facility. The increasing numbers for small car division racing continues to rise and those who have the need for speed and want to remain within their budget restraints, Hamlin Speedway offers the superb alternative with their many divisions of great and affordable competition.
The new season brought out a great new batch of new and refurbished racing equipment to the speedway. Along with many new race cars, many new faces put in their first Hamlin Speedway appearances and the car count of 125 speaks volumes as the draw of racing equipment to the Pocono facility has far reaching effects with the New England driving contingent adding great flavor to the exciting racing action. The fans had the opportunity to check out the many new paint schemes and graphics of the great field of cars on hand and the seasonally changing rookie division will act as the farm system for many full size racing divisions at other speedways for those who will make the transition into the regular divisions in the future.
New drivers on hand included Adam Buchel, Emily Fleming, Ty Kelly, Tommy Stillo, Austin Homan, Gavin McClure, James Costlow and Colton Geary in the Junior Slingshots. New rookie 600 Sprint drivers included Aaron Casterlin, Mack Brink, Geordan Marrero, Jacob Balliet, Joe Howey, Matt Brown, Mikey Smith, Jakson Ring, Dylan Martin, Noah Zielinski, Chad Connor, Ryan Mohr, JR Williams and Tim Bauer. Tom Van Pelt and Steve Pirone were new entries for the Super Slingers. Damon Paul, Michael Burns, Janell Geary and Michael Samony were new entries for the Stage One Modifieds. Josh Marcus, Samantha Muller, Amanda Buchel, Ashley Kober, Clayton Davey, Anthony Recchio, Nick Vinciguerra and the Mills Brothers were among the many new entries for the All Star Slingshots.
Former track champion "The Conductor" Bobby Butler was on hand and had a great run going until his car abruptly shut off on him while racing in the top five. It was good to see Don Colaluce return to racing action. "The G-Man" Grady Johnston suffered problems early on and withdrew from competition and headed home. Brett Bieber was a surprise entrant in the Donny Hockman equipment and did his usual great job of getting to the front. Veteran racer Will Casazza (68 years old) was another who encountered problems early on. Jacob Hendershot had the misfortune of engine problems while battling upfront in the 270 Sprints. It was great to see "The Aviator" Robbie Watson enjoy a solid outing in his Applied Resources sponsored hot rod. Chad Connor, a rookie in the 600 Sprints uses the number 301 as he is related to the McGaughey Family, a name synonymous with racing in the Tri-State area. "The Young Outlaw" Jesse James Bartelson scored a win at Accord Speedway last week in the NEWS Sprint Cars and will be in competition at both Accord and Hamlin throughout the 2016 racing season.
Special thanks are in order to all of the Quarter Midget and Go Kart Clubs in the local areas for assisting in preparing the future driving stars for battle as they transition into the next phase of their racing careers.
Bridgeport Speedway director Danny Serrano took in the racing action last evening and was impressed with the close side by side action the Hamlin Speedway offers. Bridgeport races today.
Get well wishes are in order for speedway videographer Barry Boyd. Barry is slated for surgery in the near future. Hall of Fame racing legend "The Flying Farmer" Bill Wimble is having serious health issues and is need of our prayers at this time. Bill made an appearance at the speedway in August of 2014 promoting his autobiography "I'll Never Be Last Again" and was well received by the fans at Hamlin and sold all of the copies of his book at the speedway on that evening. Cards and well wishes can reach Bill at: Life Path Hospice, 3723 Upper Creek Drive, Ruskin, Florida 33573.

The Hamlin Speedway Is The "Pearl" In The Poconos
ACCORD SPEEDWAY NEWS
Posted by: | CommentsAccord, NY- Dom Roselli Ices Over Tough Accord Speedway Modified Field In Dominating Win
By: Steve Pados, Accord Speedway Media
The always unpredictable weather pattern in the Northeast had rain scheduled in the forecast but Accord Speedway Promoters Gary and Donna Palmer threw caution to the overhead clouds and put on a great show last night at the speedway. A good sized racing crowd came out to witness the spirited action and while their was some slight drizzle during the evening, ten minutes after the show was completed the skies opened up and drenched the speedway grounds.
Hard working Accord promoter Gary Palmer continues to work overtime to give his driving roster the best possible racing facility he can and the race to the walls speed channels were a true testament to his dedication to his craft as the speedway offered many channels for the drivers to display their speed and guile. The evening was sponsored by Mombaccus Excavating. The seven feature card found "The Iceman" Dom Roselli dominating the United Pump and Tank Modified division as he wired the field in a dominant showing for the veteran campaigner. "The Lightning Bolt" Rich Ricci III gave the field a jolt with a pass for the lead on the 23rd lap to win the Healey Brothers Group Sportsman. Gary Ronk overcame his troubles from a week ago to capture the Arkle Motor Pure Stock Division feature event. "The Layton Laser" Brody Adamsky grabbed up his first ever win in his ride in the Ruge's Performance NEWS Sprint Cars. Hunter Lapp made it two in a row as claimed the win in the WRWD Radio Junior Slingshots and Samantha Muller won her second event in the Want Ad Digest Outlaw Slingshot division. George Zeininger picked up where he left off in 2015 as he scored the win in the first Enduro event of the season sponsored by Emmanuel's Marketplace.
Scott Ferrier and Dom Roselli brought the United Pump & Tank Modified starting field to the line for the start of the 30-lap main grind. Roselli was shot out of a cannon as he seized the lead at the start and opened up distance at will over the remainder of the field. Ferrier kept pace but the strong field behind him were all trying to find the sweet spot on the raceway. A couple of cautions slowed the field on occasion but when the green appeared, Roselli was able to to open up a sizable lead the longer the event remained green.
Anthony Perrego was making the moves from 12th starting position and from scratch position "DC" Danny Creeden was moving forward with some nifty moves past those in front of him. Roselli was in the zone and raced to his first win at the speedway in some time. Scott Ferrier enjoyed a solid outing in a runner-up role. Anthony Perrego, Danny Creeden and Corey Lowitt completed the top five. Mike Ricci, Brad Rothaupt, Joe Judge, Allison Ricci and Richie Eurich completed the top ten.
The Healey Brothers Group Sportsman event was a true to life barnburner as a fast field of race cars highlighted another great event. A six car skirmish at the start would eliminate four cars but when the racing got rolling it was "The Rocket Man" Ryan Wood making fast tracks out on the speedway. Wood would lead the event through 23-laps but Ricci was behind him and working the racing channels to figure out a way around the Wood. A top-shelf move on the 23rd lap pulled Ricci close and he slipped past Wood as they exited turn two and heading for the white flag. Ricci would capture the win with Wood in the runner-up role in an excellent showing for the former 600 Sprint star. Phil Goetchius, Jimmy Wells and Chris Stevens rounded out the top five. Former Slingshot star "Kid Ice" Cole Hentschel headed up the second five with Robbie Knipe following.
Brody Adamsky led all fifteen laps of the Ruge's Performance NEWS Sprint Car division to claim his first ever Accord Speedway victory. Opening night winner Jesse James Bartelson was second followed by Don Smith Jr, Don Smith III and Andrew Davis.
Samantha Muller made it two in a row in the Want AD Digest Slingshot event with a solid run over Sarah Bohlin.
Hunter Lapp made it two in a row at Accord and his third overall win of the young season as he overcame a solid run by Michael Corbin to race to victory. Corbin was second with John Kendall third, Jake Mason fourth and Ryan Auchmoody completing the top five.
The Arkel Motors Pure Stock main event began with Jimmy Sykes leading the first four laps. Gary Ronk grabbed the lead on lap five and led the remaining laps to capture his initial win of the young season. Steve Williams was second with opening night victor Bob Sleight third, Ray Tarantino fourth and Jimmy Sykes nailing down fifth place. Mike DuBois Jr, Travis Brockner, Harry Bachman, Lenny Helmich and James Goetchius completed the top ten.
Russell Doland Jr led the first lap of the Emmanuel's Marketplace 4 cylinder Enduro. Bill Moylan took over for a lap and then it was George Zeininger for a lap. Moylan and Zeininger took turns at leading until lap nineteen when Zeininger took over for good. Moylan stayed close until with two laps to go found his car not wanting to cooperate as he dropped from the event.
Zeininger was the winner with Tim DeGrote second and Jeff DeGroat in third.
Gemstones:
Heat winners for the evening included Samantha Muller and John Kendall in the Slingshots. Brody Adamsky captured the Sprint heat. Jimmy Sykes and Travis Brockner scored wins in the Pure Stock division. The Sportsman ranks found Rich Ricci III and Nick Johnson scoring victories. Dom Roselli, Joe Judge and Kenny Ferrier all enjoyed wins in the Modifieds.
New cars on hand included Jesse Marks, who made the move into the Modifieds. Billy Van Inwegen and Chad Loidice made their first Accord Modified starts for the season. Cole Hentschel and Brandon McGill made their first starts of the season in the Sportsman ranks. Sarah Bohlin made her first start in a couple of seasons but was a regular during the Midweek Madness seasons at the speedway. Lenny Helmich made his first start in the Pure Stock ranks.
Dave Torchio put $50.00 into the Junior Slingshot purse in tribute to his brother Adam Torchio from Torch Performance. Torchio passed away during the off-season at the age of 49.
Happy Birthday wishes go out to Noah Gabriel who turned three.

Emcee Steve Pados opened the show and introduced IRCO Vice President Greg Collins to the crowd. Collins once thanked the local racing community for their support and talked of the various offerings from the IRCO group and added the Tuesday night portion of the show is one of his favorite nights as he truly enjoys the answers and conversations the announcers are able to extract from the young stars, as some were giving their first ever interviews. Adams Brothers Used Auto Parts, located two miles north of the Lehigh Valley Airport at 5995 Adams Lanes in Allentown, Pennsylvania sponsored last evening's event for the young stars from the quarter midgets. Reach them by phone at: 610-264 2334. Harry and Rich Pursell, the owners at Adams Brothers were on hand and Rich remarked they were glad to be able to once lend assistance to the show through sponsorship.
Ed and Steve Pados and Bobby Stull interviewed a great group of young driving stars from the area and without question once again proved the future of auto racing is in great hands with the drivers and the generous support of their families. The Quarter Midgets are a great way to begin the careers of the budding young drivers and many graduates of Quarter Midget racing have gone on to great racing careers in the sport and many of the drivers interviewed felt they would race the Quarter Midgets until their age requirements expire and then make the transition into one of the many offerings available in racing and the answers given led one to believe all of the speedways in the area will benefit from the early educations these young stars acquire in racing.
Drivers on hand included USAC National Champion Kevin Holt Jr, Charlene Benz, James Benz, Adam Buchel, Bentley Miller, Austin Kroboth, Tanner Edwards, Anthony Chrobak, Mark Evans, TJ Bowman, Colton Yetter, Austin Homan, Gabriel Homan, Abby Barone and Tanner Van Doran. "The Negotiator" Ricky Yetter was on hand and gave an impromptu interview with the hosts as he began his racing career in a quarter midget built by his father Rich Yetter and now will have his son Colton in the seat for the 2016 racing season. Noted racer Jason Van Doran was also hand and talked about the Blue Mountain Club and the great family participation at the track. Anthony Chrobak gave the dates of the USAC Regional event at West End that will take place on May 21/22 and the USAC National event slated for June 11/12.
Wednesday evening will be highlighting Hamlin Speedway, Snydersville Speedway, Accord Speedway, Mahoning Valley Speedway, and Orange County Fair Speedway. The evening's show is sponsored by Hamlin Speedway and S&S Speedways Indoor Karts located in Snydersville, Pennsylvania and Smith Fabrications, the home of the Stage One Modifieds.

JEFF STRUNK ROCKETS HIS WAY TO 5 G’S IN ACCORD SPEEDWAY KING OF THE CATSKILLS TRIUMPH
Posted by: | CommentsAccord, NY- Jeff Strunk Rockets His Way To 5 G's In Accord Speedway King Of The Catskills Triumph
By: Steve Pados, Accord Speedway Media
The Ulster County weather was perfect, the Accord Speedway was in top form and a great roster of drivers and a standing room only crowd proved to be spectacular for Promoters Gary and Donna Palmer to host their annual King of the Catskills event at the speedway. Working right up until race time, Gary Palmer had the pristine quarter mile clay speedplant in impeccable condition that enabled the stout field of Modified and Sportsman competitors to race wall to wall throughout the evening of racing. The evening of speed was headlined by sponsor Bruce Insinger and his Insinger Fuel Team.
When all was said and done, Modified short track specialist "The Bechtelsville Bullet" Jeff Strunk used patience and a big right foot to hustle his way from 21st starting position to take over the lead on lap-45 and dominate the action the remainder of the way to capture his first ever King of the Catskills victory and the $5,000.00 prize that went along with it. In the combination Open Sportsman/Spec Sportsman 30-lap shootout, 2015 Accord Speedway Spec Sportsman Champion Robbie Knipe traded the lead back and forth with Dave Werber for four laps before seizing command of the event on lap five and go on to lead the remainder of the event to capture the win and the $1,500.00 pay day that awaited him in the Lucas Oil Products Victory Lane. In the Nightcap for the Four Cylinder Enduro Bombers, George Zeininger continued his mastery over the rest of the Enduro field to go on and win his second consecutive Enduro event of the season and with it adding $2,000.00 to his yearly winnings.
Twenty-four of some of the finest Modifieds on the East Coast today took off in a run for the roses with "DC" Danny Creeden blasting out into the lead. Creeden wasted no time in running into daylight as he opened up a huge advantage on the field. The 2015 Accord Modified Champion Jeff Heotzler Sr was running in second with a pack of topflight racing stars behind him all vying for the valuable track real estate. Richard Smith, Anthony Perrego, Danny Johnson, Andy Bachetti and Mike Mahaney all showed the ability to pass and contend in the event with all of the driving stars running great races. Restarts slowed the action a bit as the attrition began to mount up.
Creeden was still leading at the 1/3 mark of the event but all eyes were focused on the Zubi's Racing machine of Jeff Strunk. Strunk was methodical in disposing of those in front of him and moved into the third place slot five laps later. On lap-29, the fine run from Creeden came to a stop on turn two. The restart found Heotzler and Strunk side by side and Heotzler moved into the lead with Strunk running close behind. Strunk once again began applying pressure and worked his way past Heotzler in lap-45 to take over the point. Once in front, Strunk went into cruise control and he worked his way through slower traffic the remainder of the way to drive on to his first King of the Catskills victory. Strunk, who finished fourth in last year's event aboard a Jerry Higbie owned racer, was very thankful to his sponsors, crew, the fans and to Jerry Higbie in the victory lane celebration as his conversations with Higbie during the week helped set up the car for the win.
Jeff Heotzler Sr was second in a very stout run with "Prime Time" Scott Ferrier working his way from 18th starting spot to finish third. Mike Mahaney was solid all evening to earn fourth place while "The Doctor" Danny Johnson came back through the field after pitting at the midway point to round out the top five. The second five included Andy Bachetti, Richard Smith, Joe Judge, Craig Mitchell and Robbie Green.
Robbie Knipe and Dave Werber made up the front row for the Sportsman main event. Knipe in a Crate motored racer and Werber in an Open Sportsman machine set up the classic dual in what was about to follow. Werber led the first lap while Knipe slipped past him to lead lap two. Werber regained the lead in laps three and four and it Knipe going to the top of the raceway between turns one and two to once again seize command of the race. Just as Knipe opened up a small advantage, coming up to challenge the leaders was the "Riegelsville Rocket" Jimmy Housworth. Housworth began in seventh place and was working the channels of the speedway to perfection as he made it a three way battle for the lead.
The front three remained close past the halfway point and Knipe gained a bit of an advantage as Werber had to play a bit of defense against the hard charging Housworth. Knipe would race to victory with Werber solid in the runner-up slot and Housworth giving it all he had to gain a podium finish. "Jammin" Jimmy Wells hustled hard from 14th starting spot to finish fourth while Greg McCloskey rounded out the top five. The second five included Chris Stevens, Randy Green, Phil Johnson, Ken Boniface and Shane Jablonka.
The veteran campaigner George Zeininger wasted no time in charging to the front in the 100-lap Enduro excursion. Zeininger, who captured the first Enduro event in July, paced himself throughout the event and passed cars at will sometimes passing three and four cars at a shot in a dazzling driving exhibition. It would be Zeininger capturing the $2,000.00 prize with Chicky Bruntfield in the runner-up role and Drew Boniface rounding out the podium finish.
GEMSTONES:
The showcased event of the season at Accord for the Palmer Family was another spectacular event for the successful promotional team now in their 15th season at operating their Ulster County facility. The racing was superb as every Modified and Sportsman heat resembled a mini feature event. The standing room only crowd came from far and wide with as many as twelve states representing the statewide support of the tremendous racing activity. Parking was at a premium and the grounds were abuzz with excitement for the long awaited evening of racing at the "Gem in the Catskills". The turnstiles of fans filled the concession areas all night long as they devoured the great cuisine offered up by the the speedway concessions.
Forty Modifieds made their way to the pit area along with forty sportsman and 33 Four Cylinder Bombers. Five heats were needed for the Modifieds with Jimmy Horton, Danny Johnson, Andy Bachetti, Jeff Heotzler Sr and Anthony Perrego scoring wins. Jimmy Horton was light on the scales so he suffered a DQ giving the win to Danny Tyler. Sportsman cars also ran five heats with Robbie Knipe, Dave Werber, Jesse Marks, Brad Szulewski and Jimmy Johnson claiming the wins. Two B-Mains were needed for the Modifieds with Jeff Strunk and Shaun Walker claiming the wins. The two Sportsman B-Mains were won by Corey Pike and Shane Jablonka.
New faces were in abundance on this evening with Craig Mitchell, Brett and Alex Tonkin, Andy Bachetti, Danny Johnson, Matt Janiak, Mike Mahaney, Nick Rochinski, Dan Humes, Shaun Walker, Jimmy Horton, Bobby Hentschel, Jeff Strunk, and Tyler McKee all putting in their first appearances. Chris Lynch, Chris Stevens, Jim Housworth, Joe Conklin, Mike Travers, Ryan Stortini, Jake Grannaker, Brian White and Tyler Johnston all made their first Sportsman starts.
Tim Adams rejoined the speedway last evening after losing a few weeks due to some health issues. Great to have him back.
Former Lake Mocatek Speedway Assistant Announcer Justin Beltrame was on board last evening to help with the announcing chores. Regular announcer Steve Pados and Beltrame worked together at Mocatek for four years and still do events together, namely the Dirt Track Heroes Show with Bob Miller in Phillipsburg, New Jersey in March of 2016. Beltrame also fills in at Hamlin Speedway when Pados cannot attend.
Grandma Annies Pies were back in victory lane last evening courtesy of Liggan Insurance, Wright's Farm Market, Rosendale Farmers Market and Cousin Pete Donohue.
A happy 59th birthday is extended to Kevin Moyer.
