The “Kunkletown Kid” opens New York All Star weekend with victory at Outlaw Speedway

New York swing continues Saturday at Orange County Fair Speedway

DUNDEE, NY (July 28, 2017) - Nearly sweeping the entire Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions program, the “Kunkletown Kid” Ryan Smith opened his weekend trek through the Empire State with a victory at Outlaw Speedway. The $5,000 triumph, Smith’s first in the state of New York, was his first of the 2017 season during Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions competition, increasing his career win total to four with the Series, also ending a near-two year victory lane hiatus.

Despite his near-sweep during the Arctic Cat All Star Outlaw Speedway debut, Smith’s victory was not conducted in easy fashion. The Kunkletown, Pennsylvania, native survived multiple challenges from former World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series champion, Sammy Swindell, during the 30-lap program, actually exchanging positions with the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame inductee on three different occasions before settling into the top spot for the final time on lap 20. To make matters more dramatic, Smith was forced to withstand not just one, but two main event restarts with a pair of laps remaining. Smith held on, followed to the final checkers by Alvada, Ohio’s Chad Kemenah.

“Feels great to get the monkey off of our backs and get this first win out of the way,” Ryan Smith explained in victory lane, pilot of the Tom and Sherry Leidig/Warko Group/Auto Electric of Jupiter, FL/Specialty Rigging/No. 59. “There are a lot of great people who help make this team possible. It gets demanding at times, but this makes it all worth it. Hopefully we can do it a couple more times this weekend.”

Ryan Smith and Sammy Swindell led the field to green on Friday night at Outlaw Speedway. Swindell earned the early advantage, leading Smith and Caleb Helms by the flagstand for the first time. Swindell stayed in control at the front of the field for the first 12 circuits, encountering traffic as early as lap five.

Smith, who never lost track of Swindell in traffic, made his first bid for the top spot on lap 13, driving under Swindell at the entrance of turn three. Swindell eventually returned the favor on lap 18 with a move under Smith at the entrance of turn one. Despite Swindell’s attempt at running away from Smith in traffic, the “Kunkletown Kid” never allowed Swindell to extend his advantage, ultimately getting back by the Jared Zimbardi-owned No. 35S as the pair drag raced toward the start/finish line on lap 20.

The main event’s first caution appeared on lap 29 which set up a two-lap dash to the finish. A caution during the first restart attempt would force the field to try again. It was then when Chad Kemenah made a run on Sammy Swindell to takeover the second position. The five-time and defending Arctic Cat All Star champion attempted to make a bid for the lead one lap later, but time was out.

“Hats off to Ryan Smith and his whole team. Those guys work really hard and they deserved this one,” Hunter Racing’s Chad Kemenah explained. “We tried to get a run on Ryan there with a lap or so to go. I got around Sammy [Swindell], so I figured I had a chance. We’ll take this and move forward. We have a big race coming up in Iowa that we are excited about. We’re going to keep an eye on that.”

The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will continue their weekend march through the Empire State with a Saturday night visit to the Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, New York. The 5/8-mile speed plant, arguably the largest oval on the 2017 Arctic Cat All Star campaign trail, will feature “America’s Series” for the first and only time in 2017. A top prize equaling $10,000 will be handed out on Saturday evening, the peak of a purse exceeding $32,000.

Orange County Fair Speedway will open pit gates and drive-in gates beginning at 3:00pm, followed by main gates at 4:00pm. Smoke earns I-79 Summer Shootout finale victory at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway

IMPERIAL, PA (July 24, 2017) - For the first time since February 11, 2012, and for the second time during his famed career, “Smoke” Tony Stewart is an Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions main event winner, this time taming “Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile” at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway to help end the 2017 edition of the I-79 Summer Shootout.

Stewart, who started third on the feature grid, took command officially during a lap 23 restart and never looked back, ultimately crossing under the final checkers nearly three seconds ahead of Lemoore, California’s Carson Macedo, and Dalton, Ohio's Lee Jacobs. Fortunately for Stewart, lapped traffic also factored in as an advantage, as race leader Tim Shaffer would become tangled with a lapped car, surrendering the point position to the former NASCAR Cup Series champion.

“Man, this is a fun race track; so wide and so racey,” Tony Stewart said in victory lane, pilot of the Rush Truck Centers/Ford Performance/Arctic Cat/No. 14. “To be rim-riding like that, a foot off the wall, is pretty intense around here. I watched Christopher Bell race from 20th to second at the Kings Royal, so I figured it was my turn to do something special.”

Carson Macedo and Tim Shaffer led the field to green on Monday night at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. Shaffer earned the initial advantage, soon flanked by Macedo, Danny Holtgraver, Chad Kemenah, and Tony Stewart. Shaffer opened his advantage instantly, climbing to a near-three second lead before the main event’s first caution appeared on lap six.

Green flag conditions resumed with Tim Shaffer returning to the top spot, soon followed by Tony Stewart, who made a big jump to second after passing two cars on the restart. Traffic came into play for the first time on lap 11 allowing Stewart to reel in Shaffer. Soon joined by Holtgraver, the top three cars raced nose-to-tail and side-by-side through traffic for three circuits until caution flags reappeared on lap 14, this time for Danny Holtgraver. The nearby Pittsburgh native made incidental contact with Tony Stewart while attempting a slide job for the second position. Holtgraver did not return.

“By the time I realized I wasn't going to be able to get back around Danny [Holtgraver], I had already checked up on the brakes and turned down,” Stewart explained. “I clipped him with my front bumper. That was about the only mistake I really made. You don't want to see things end like that. We were going to put on one heck of a race.”

Once again, green flag conditions returned with Shaffer setting the pace, now followed by Tony Stewart and Carson Macedo. By lap 20, traffic returned in full force allowing Stewart to track down Shaffer once again. A two car battle soon commenced into a three car battle as Chad Kemenah entered the picture, now tracking down the top pair after taking control of the third position on lap 21.

Unfortunately for Tim Shaffer, his tenure at the top of the running order would come to an end eight laps sooner than intended. Contact with a lapped car while attempting to run away from Tony Stewart in traffic forced an early retirement for the former Arctic Cat All Star champion, ultimately surrendering the top spot to the eventual winner on lap 23. “Smoke” cruised on to score the $5,000 victory; a first ever Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway feat for the Columbus, Indiana, native. Carson Macedo chased Stewart to the line, followed by Lee Jacobs, Chad Kemenah and Ryan Smith.

“When I saw Lee Jacobs running the bottom, at that point I wasn't sure where I needed to be,” Stewart explained. “Rico Abreu is here with me tonight and I had him trying to help me out, but he wasn't sure where I needed to be. I figured if I got a good restart, I would just get to the top and rip eight good laps. That's what we did.”

Macedo and Jacobs each raced by Chad Kemenah during the final circuits to secure the final podium positions. Macedo was the evening’s pole sitter, dropping as far back as fourth in the running order before finally charging back second on lap 25.

Jacobs, who started eighth on the feature grid, battled within the top-five during most of the 30-lap feature program, making a bid for a podium position as early as lap 15.

Closing out the month of July, the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will continue their 2017 campaign with a three day trip to The Empire State, set to invade three different dirt ovals during three straight days from July 28-30, chasing a combined winner’s share equaling $22,000. “America’s Series” will visit Outlaw Speedway, Orange County Fair Speedway and Lebanon Valley Speedway during their New York swing, awarding $5,000, $10,000 and $7,000, respectively.

Outlaw Speedway will open pit gates and main gates at 3:00pm on Friday, July 28. Hot laps will hit the speedway at 6:00pm, followed by racing at 7:00pm. Tim Shaffer conquers Tri-City Raceway Park for third Arctic Cat All Star victory of 2017
I-79 Summer Shootout concludes Monday at PPMS

FRANKLIN, PA (July 23, 2017) - After opening the 2017 I-79 Summer Shootout with a runner-up finish at Eriez (PA) Speedway on Friday evening, the “Steel City Outlaw” Tim Shaffer did one better on Sunday night by winning round two at Tri-City Raceway Park in Franklin, Pennsylvania. The Arctic Cat All Star victory, Shaffer’s third of the 2017 season and second ever at Tri-City Raceway Park, was earned in dominating fashion; leading all 30 circuits around the Venango County, 1/2-mile oval, ultimately holding off a pair of fellow former Arctic Cat All Star champions, Chad Kemenah and Dale Blaney.

“Hats off to the team. This is what we’ve been working for,” Tim Shaffer said in victory lane. “There are a lot of guys on this team who help make this happen. I couldn’t do it without them.”

The Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, native jumped to the early advantage from the outside of row one, crossing by the flagstand for the first time with Dale Blaney, Spencer Bayston, and Chad Kemenah in tow. Lap after lap, Shaffer’s lead continued to increase, eventually building a 2.6 second cushion before the main event’s first caution appeared on lap eight.

Including the initial pause on lap eight, a total of five cautions between laps eight and 15 interrupted Shaffer’s pace at the top of the running order, none of which proving to be a distraction, as Shaffer returned to a near-three second advantage before the final caution on lap 15.

The restart on lap 15 proved to be the final time Shaffer would have to bring the field back to life. Even with lapped traffic reappearing by lap 23, Shaffer was able to maintain his lead, ultimately crossing under the final checkers two seconds ahead of Chad Kemenah and Dale Blaney.

“We’ve been putting ourselves in great positions all season, but not taking advantage of them,” Tim Shaffer said, pilot of the Rudzik Excavating/No. 49X. “It took some time to get our program together to figure out where these cars needed to be at the end of the race. This is a great time of the year to get fast with the month of money underway.”

Chad Kemenah, who started third on the feature grid, raced within the top four spots during all 30 laps, advancing into third after the lap 15 restart, and advancing again into second ahead of Dale Blaney while racing in traffic on lap 23. The runner-up finish gives Kemenah 16 top-five finishes on the season, now extending his championship lead to 286 markers.

“We started to run out of fuel with less than five laps to go, so that didn’t help us out too much,” Chad Kemenah said, pilot of the Hunter Racing/DKW Transport/JRC Transportation/Seneca Energy/No. 10H. “I can’t thank everyone enough. As long as I’m up here talking to [Blake Anderson], I think we’re doing just fine.”

The 2017 I-79 Summer Shootout will conclude on Monday evening, July 24, at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway in Imperial, Pennsylvania. Originally set for Saturday evening, July 22, the rescheduled program will award a $5,000 top prize, as well as full points toward the 2017 Arctic Cat All Star championship. The visit to “Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile” will be the final Western Pennsylvania appearance for the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions in 2017.

Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway’s main gates are scheduled to open at 5:00pm with hot laps to follow at 6:00pm, sharp. Cole Duncan opens I-79 Summer Shootout with victory at Eriez Speedway

ERIE, PA (July 21, 2017) - Utilizing patience and a late race restart, Lockbourne, Ohio’s Cole Duncan parked himself back in Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions victory lane, this time earning $5,000 at Eriez (PA) Speedway to officially open the 2017 edition of I-79 Summer Shootout weekend in Western Pennsylvania.

Duncan, who now owns two Arctic Cat All Star victories on the season, in turn elevating his career win total to three with “America’s Series,” took command officially on lap 20 of 30 and never looked back, the result of a strong move under race leader, Hunter Schuerenberg, between turns three and four just after a lap 20 restart. Aliquippa, Pennsylvania’s Tim Shaffer chased Duncan to the final checkers, followed by Schuerenberg, the “Kunkletown Kid” Ryan Smith and Spencer Bayston.

“I honestly cannot thank all of these guys enough,” Cole Duncan said in victory lane, pilot of the Helms Construction/Motorcity Auto Transport/No. 22. “This has been really cool. We are definitely having one helluva year, especially during this second part of the season. We were on the podium what seemed like 10 or 12 times this year, but just couldn’t get the job done. We’ve been doing so much better at placing ourselves in better positions. I’m just - man, I’m excited.”

Pole sitter Hunter Schuerenberg led the field to green on Friday night and kept command for the first 19 circuits, soon flanked by Cole Duncan, who started alongside Schuerenberg on the front row, just after the initial green. The duo survived one caution and two periods of heavy traffic during the first 19 circuits, neither creating much distraction as the pair navigated through lapped cars methodically.

After a failed attempt to get by Schuerenberg on a lap eight restart, Duncan tucked back in line and proceeded to follow Schuerenberg through traffic until the main event’s second and final caution appeared on lap 20, setting up another single-file restart. When green flag conditions returned, Duncan accelerated right to the tail tank of Schuerenberg and chased the Missouri native through turns one and two, ultimately setting up a slingshot move through corners three and four. Duncan was able to wedge himself between the bottom of the race track and Schuerenberg by the exit of turn four; this proved to be the winning move.

“I knew I was better in turns three and four,” Cole Duncan explained. “I screwed up on that first restart; I just didn’t get close enough to [Schuerenberg] to get a good run. I tried to time the second restart the best that I could. I put myself in perfect position off of turn two and when we entered turn three, he left just about a car length off of the bottom of the speedway. That is where our car seemed to shine all night. We jammed it right in there. I don’t think I used him up at all; I thought it was pretty clean. Hopefully we can make this happen again tomorrow and keep our success going.”

I-79 Summer Shootout weekend will continue on Saturday evening, July 22, at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway near Imperial, Pennsylvania. “Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile” will welcome the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions for the first and only time in 2017; the first official visit since August 2, 2015, when the “Low Rider” Dale Blaney scored his second ever Pittsburgh victory. The 2016 I-79 Summer Shootout visit to Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway was cut short due to Mother Nature.

Joey Saldana earns first Wayne County All Star victory since 1999

ORRVILLE, OH (July 1, 2017) - Despite 18 years separating Joey Saldana from his last visit to Wayne County Speedway, the result remained the same; a victory against the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions.

Saldana, aboard the Indy Race Parts/No. 71, led 15 of the 30 circuits on Saturday night to claim the $5,000 winner’s share at Orrville’s Historic Oval, utilizing a lap 16 restart to slingshot underneath early race leader, Chad Kemenah. The victory, his first Arctic Cat All Star victory since 2014 at Volusia Speedway Park, increased Saldana’s overall Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions win count to 72, five of which at Wayne County Speedway which ties “The Brownsburg Bullet” with Sheldon Haudenschild for the most all-time.

Lockbourne, Ohio’s Cole Duncan charged from seventh to finish second at Wayne County Speedway, followed by Chad Kemenah, Ryan Smith and pole-sitter Dean Jacobs.

“This just goes to show how important it is to be around a great team,” Joey Saldana explained in victory lane. “Sprint car racing is really tough, and it is really easy to get down on yourself. Tonight just goes to show that it’s not just you, it’s a whole team, and tonight I had a whole team. I raced with the All Stars for a long time. It was the feeding ground for the World of Outlaws. Racing with this Series did a lot for me. Luckily for me I was lucky enough to take that next step and move forward.”

Before Saldana made his winning move on lap 16, it was all Dean Jacobs and Chad Kemenah at the front of the running order. Despite a number of cautions halting action, one of which during the opening green resulting in a four car pile-up, Jacobs and Kemenah battled relentlessly, racing side-by-side nearly all the way around Wayne County Speedway.

Jacobs led the first six circuits officially, ultimately losing the lead to Kemenah on lap seven, only to regain control again to officially lead laps eight through 11. Kemenah drove back under Jacobs at the entrance of turn three to solidify himself back on top of the field on lap 12, only to be halted by red flag conditions on lap 13, and another caution on lap 16. By that point, Saldana had already worked his way into second, now setting his sights on the five-time and defending Arctic Cat All Star champion.

When green flag action returned, Saldana chased Chad Kemenah into turns one and two, ultimately setting up a drag race through turn three where Saldana would drove under the Hunter Racing/Seneca Energy/DKW Transport/No. 10H. From that point forward, “The Brownsburg Bullet” was the show, and despite one more caution pausing his momentum, Saldana would pull ahead to win by 3.3 seconds.

“It feels really good to be back here, and to be tied with Sheldon Haudenschild is pretty cool,” Saldana said. “He’s the next best thing in sprint car racing. He has a lot of talent.”

The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will continue competition on Saturday evening, July 8, with a visit to Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio; the second and final visit by the Arctic Cat All Stars in 2017, as well as the 100th overall appearance since the Series first made the trek to Hartford in 1970.

The 9th Annual Lou Blaney Memorial, honoring the late National Sprint Car Hall of Fame inductee, will headline competition at the state-of-the-art facility on Saturday evening. The Arctic Cat All Stars will battle for a $5,000 top prize.

Cole Duncan earns Ohio Sprint Speedweek finale victory, Tim Shaffer claims third Speedweek championship

CHILLICOTHE, OH (June 25, 2017) - Ending a near-four year drought, Lockbourne, Ohio’s Cole Duncan is back in Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions victory lane, this time earning the 35th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket finale win at Atomic Speedway over a field of 53 entries. The pilot of the Helms Construction/Motor City Auto Transport/Ohio Heating/No. 22C earned his $5,000 payday from the outside of row three, utilizing a lap 21 restart to take command officially on lap 22 over Muskingum County Speedway winner, Spencer Bayston. Duncan chased Bayston for six circuits before making the winning move, eventually driving under the familiar Kevin Swindell-owned No. 39 through turns three and four.

Duncan’s victory caps off an impressive Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket campaign for the second generation Arctic Cat All Star winner, finishing tied for second in the final Ohio Sprint Speedweek championship standings on the strength of one victory and five top-ten finishes, three of which inside the top-five. Despite ending in a tie, Duncan will be declared the official runner-up due to having a victory over Chad Kemenah.

Spencer Bayston held on to finish second on Saturday night at Atomic Speedway, followed by DJ Foos, Tanner Thorson and Caleb Armstrong.

“Man, I’ve been waiting to talk to you for a long time,” Cole Duncan explained in victory lane. “I just want to thank all of the fans for coming out tonight. It was a near-perfect night for racing. The track was in perfect shape. I’m so glad Brad (McCown) opened this place back up and did what he did. It feels so good to be in victory lane during an All Star event at my home track. This is the first Speedweek I’ve ever completed. I’m so proud of everyone.”

Cole Duncan won the battle on Saturday night, but it was the “Steel City Outlaw” Tim Shaffer who won the war, claiming his third Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket point championship worth $1,000. Shaffer’s Speedweek run ended with two victories, the first at Eldora Speedway and the second at Waynesfield Raceway Park, as well as five top-ten finishes, edging out Cole Duncan and Chad Kemenah in the final Ohio Sprint Speedweek title fight by 14 points.

“This was definitely a whole group effort. They did a great job, which made me look even better than I was,” said Tim Shaffer. “We’re running well at a perfect time of the year. I’m having more fun now than I ever have. They gave me a great car here tonight. We have the engines and the parts; everything we need to be better.”

The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will continue competition with visits to Kokomo (IN) Speedway and Wayne County (OH) Speedway on Friday and Saturday, June 30 and July 1. The Kokomo Speedway program was originally set for Friday, May 19, but was postponed due to Mother Nature. Tony Stewart, three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and Arctic Cat All Star owner, will join the field at Indiana’s baddest bullring; the only Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions appearance in the state of Indiana for 2017. Rico Abreu is the most recent winner during Arctic Cat All Star competition at Kokomo Speedway, earning the 2016 Dirt Classic Indiana worth $12,500.

The upcoming Wayne County Speedway appearance will be the third of five for the Arctic Cat All Stars in 2017, most recently during Ohio Sprint Speedway presented by Cometic Gasket on Monday, June 19. Kyle Larson was the Speedweek winner, his first of two Ohio Sprint Speedweek victories with the second coming one night later at Sharon (OH) Speedway.

Spencer Bayston goes wire-to-wire for Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket victory at Muskingum County Speedway

DRESDEN, OH (June 22, 2017) - For the second time in 2017, and for the second time in his career, Lebanon, Indiana’s Spencer Bayston is an Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions main event winner, this time scoring $5,000 during round six of Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket at Muskingum County Speedway.

Aboard the Kevin Swindell-owned/Premier Truck Group/John Christner Trucking/No. 39, Bayston led all 30 circuits on Thursday evening at the Dresden-area oval, manhandling multiple waves of intense traffic, as well as an aggressive cushion at the top of the speedway, to clinch his first Arctic Cat All Star win since April. Fellow Indiana native Caleb Armstrong finished second, followed by Chad Kemenah, Tim Shaffer and Cole Duncan.

“I’m going to get most of the credit here tonight, but the people who really deserve the credit are the ones standing behind me,” Spencer Bayston said in victory lane. “This is a brand new race car. We rolled one over the other night at Wayne County Speedway, so we’ve been up until about four in the morning the last few nights working to get this one ready. Kevin and Jordan [Swindell], the whole crew; they all work so hard and make all of this happen. Without them, I wouldn’t be standing up here.”

Bayston’s 30-lap campaign at the front of the field started from the pole position, taking command right from the drop of the green flag over Caleb Armstrong and two-time Speedweek winner Tim Shaffer. Two early cautions, the first on lap five and the second on lap ten, were the only two momentum breakers for Bayston, but neither created any sort of distraction. Bayston’s lead was nearly three seconds on multiple occasions even while racing in traffic, and despite having to deal with dirty air, the Indiana native hardly faltered.

“We got to dirty air in traffic and my whole race changed it felt like,” Bayston said. “I had to kinda drive above [the cushion] a couple times, but it almost didn’t work for me because I nearly looped it. Despite all of that, I never really felt any pressure, so I was able to just cruise and bring it home.”

Caleb Armstrong’s runner-up finish was a season-high for the New Castle, Indiana, native. The second year Arctic Cat All Star traveler started second on the feature grid and battled in that position all 30 laps. Chad Kemenah, the current Arctic Cat All Star championship point leader, charged from 11th to finish third, solid enough to earn MSD Performance Hard Charger Award honors.

Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio, will continue Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket with round seven of competition on Friday evening, June 23. Limaland has hosted the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions on 30 separate occasions since their first visit in 1983, the most recent during the 2016 edition of Ohio Sprint Speedweek on June 24, 2016. “The Hurricane” Randy Hannagan scored the $5,000 top prize, his first-ever at the high banked quarter-mile during Arctic Cat All Star competition.
