The All Stars return to action with doubleheader in Michigan and Indiana

BROWNSBURG, Ind. (August 14, 2019) - It has been nearly three weeks since Tony Stewart’s Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 participated in scheduled competition, but despite the break, the traveling aces are ready for action and will hit the road once again, this time setting aim on a doubleheader in Michigan and Indiana.

Led by defending All Star Circuit of Champions titleholder and current Series point leader, Aaron Reutzel, the traveling All Stars will kick-off the weekend on Friday night, August 16, with a visit to I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Michigan. Not stopping there, the Series will venture roughly two and a half hours south for a one night stand at Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Indiana, on Saturday, August 17. Incidentally, the visits to Michigan and Indiana, respectively, will be a first and only for Tony Stewart’s All Stars in 2019. In addition, each round will award $5,000 top prizes.

Joining Reutzel on the All Star campaign trail will be a stout contingent of Series full-timers including six-time champion and all-time Series win leader, Dale Blaney, who trails Reutzel by a mere-eight markers in the driver title chase. Rudeen Racing’s Cory Eliason will also be in attendance, as well as Paul McMahan, Brock Zearfoss, Greg Wilson, Gerard McIntyre, Skylar Gee, and George Hobaugh.

Although Series full-timers experienced a break from All Star commitments, most did not take any time off. In fact, the All Star Circuit of Champions were represented well during the 59th running of the Knoxville Nationals in Knoxville, Iowa. Aaron Reutzel, Cory Eliason, and Paul McMahan each qualified for A-Main competition at Knoxville Raceway with Reutzel leading representation with a fifth place performance; Eliason and McMahan finished 13th and 20th, respectively.

Those unable to make the journey to I-96 Speedway and Plymouth Speedway can still watch every lap of action live from the comfort of their own home. Tony Stewart outruns Rico Abreu and Christopher Bell to score inaugural Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race victory at 34 Raceway

WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (July 28, 2019) - It took Tony Stewart nearly six months to earn his second Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory of the 2019 season, but the victory was well worth the wait, scoring the inaugural Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race win at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, worth $26,000.

Forced to outrun some of the best in the business, Smoke took command of the feature field on lap 11, taking advantage of a mishap by race leader, as well as pole-sitter, Rico Abreu. The mishap, a miscue on the cushion which forced Abreu up and over the edge in turns one and two, allowed Smoke to close-in on the California-native and capitalize.

Although Smoke maintained control for the next 19 circuits, a hornets nest assembled behind the Columbus, Indiana-native with Rico Abreu, Christopher Bell and Aaron Reutzel all battling for top-five positions.

After exchanging slide jobs corner after corner with NASCAR Xfinity star, Christopher Bell, for nearly five circuits, Rico Abreu settled into second, followed by Bell, defending All Star champion, Aaron Reutzel, and Cory Eliason at the final checkers.

The 34 Raceway triumph bumps Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions win count to five, his second of the season and his first since February in Ocala, Florida. Adding some extra spark to his five-figure payday, Smoke accomplished his feat with MAVTV Motorsports Network cameras rolling - set to re-air later this year.

“Hats off to Kevin Rudeen and his staff; Natalie Sather and all of Speed Media. Kevin came up to me this winter and had an idea for an event like this. I was happy to be a part of it, but I had no idea I would be in contention to win it. I’m truly honored to win an event that pays tribute to Rayce Rudeen,” Tony Stewart said, driver of the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing/Rush Truck Centers/Toco Warranty/Ford Performance/Sage Fruit/No. 14 sprint car. “I was just happy to be in the dash. Winning the dash set us up for all of this.”

Rico Abreu led the first ten circuits on Sunday night, blasting away to a near-straightaway lead by the time the leaders reached traffic for the first time. Unfortunately, Abreu would only face traffic for a single circuit, as the St. Helena, California-native lost the edge of the speedway and slid off the banking which allowed Smoke to drive by and take command.

“Rico [Abreu] has us all covered, there is no doubt in my mind,” Tony Stewart continued. “He had a big lead and I’m not sure we were ever going to catch him. In fact, when he slipped up over the edge, I wasn’t sure I had enough to catch him before he got back up on the track. Luckily for me, I was in a position to capitalize and it all worked out. This team works so hard. Sometimes things don’t go our way, but tonight they did. I’m pretty sure this is the biggest payday I’ve ever won in a sprint car.”

“When you’re driving that hard, you’re bound to make mistakes,” Rico Abreu said. “I had really good cars behind me, so you have no choice but to race as hard as you can. I just over drove, really. That’s why I love sprint car racing so much. It really brings out your driving ability.”

The All Star Circuit of Champions will enjoy a pair of weekends away from scheduled competition before returning to action on Friday and Saturday, August 16 & 17, with a two-race weekend in Michigan and Indiana. The Series will visit I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Michigan, on Friday, August 16, before venturing south to Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Indiana, on Saturday, August 17.

Although the All Stars are off, technically, many full-timers will be making the trek to Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, for the coveted Knoxville Nationals on August 7-10.

Gio Scelzi dominates All Star visit to Knoxville Raceway and becomes youngest 410 winner in track history

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 27, 2019) - Fresno, California’s Gio Scelzi put on a head-turning performance Saturday night at the famed Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, ending his visit not only as an Ollie's Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, the first of his career, but also permanently etching his name in Knoxville Raceway history books as the youngest 410c.i. sprint car winner in the track’s 118-year history; Gio Scelzi is 17-years-old.

Scelzi, who started second on the feature grid as the result of his respective dash victory, did not take command for the first time until lap 10, utilizing a slider through turns one and two to work underneath the ‘Madman’ Kerry Madsen. Despite periods of intense traffic during the later stages of the main event, all potential roadblocks proved to be no match against Scelzi’s abilities, actually increasing his command to well over four seconds by halfway, eventually capping the 25-lap program by a margin of victory nearing eight seconds.

Kerry Madsen chased Scelzi to the final checkers, followed by Brian Brown, Cory Eliason, and Aaron Reutzel.

“I couldn't pick a better time to do this than right before the Knoxville Nationals,” Gio Scelzi said in Knoxville Raceway victory lane, driver of the Indy Race Parts/No. 71. “This is a dream come true to win here during an All Star race, and we put it to some damn good guys. I owe it all to this team. They work so hard and I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”

A pair of cautions before the field could register a lap were the only disturbances during Saturday’s feature program.

Although Scelzi started from the outside-pole position, it was actually Kerry Madsen who earned the initial jump, leading Scelzi and Brian Brown by the flagstand for the first time with Terry McCarl and Cory Eliason also in tow.
Brown made a move on lap two to take the second position away from Gio Scelzi, next setting aim on the top spot occupied by Kerry Madsen.

Unfortunately for Brown, the five-time Knoxville Raceway winner in 2019 would never get the opportunity to challenge Madsen for the top spot, as Scelzi beat him to the punch by taking over the second position on lap nine, next stealing the top spot from Madsen the following circuit.

From that point forward, it was no contest for Gio Scelzi, extending his advantage lap by lap until crossing under the final checkers with a lead pushing eight seconds.

“I think we’ve been getting better and better every time we’ve been here,” Gio Scelzi continued, whose performance will air on MAVTV Motorsports Network later this fall. “Tonight was a good night. Lapped traffic certainly went my way and I was able to push, push, push. I looked up at the scoreboard and saw that ‘21’ up there and it made me think a slider was coming. This is all just unbelievable.”

Tony Stewart’s All Stars will conclude their four-race trek through the heart of the Midwest with a visit to 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, on Sunday evening, July 28, taking part in the highly anticipated, as well as inaugural, Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race awarding a $26,000 top prize. The Sunday night showstopper boasts a total purse nearing $75,000; $26,000-to-win, $2,000 for tenth and $800-to-start.

McFadden goes back-to-back to score $10,000 at Jackson Motorplex

JACKSON, Minn. (July 27, 2019) - For the second time in as many days, and for the fourth time in his career, Brisbane, Australia’s James McFadden is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, this time using a late-race surge to power under race leader, Josh Baughman, during the closing laps of Friday’s visit to Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minnesota.

Starting fourth on the feature grid, McFadden’s drive to the front was not only impressive, but also valuable, scoring $10,000 for his feature triumph in southern Minnesota, bumping his two-day total with Tony Stewart’s All Stars to $15,000. Adding some extra hype to his Friday night feat, MAVTV Motorsports Network, the official television home of the All Star Circuit of Champions in 2019, was on hand to capture all of the action, set to re-air later this fall via tape-delay broadcast.

“This feels great. The car has been working really well,” James McFadden expressed, driver of the Kasey Kahne Racing with Mike Curb/Curb Records/Team ASE/Wicked Energy Gum/Wicked Cushion/No. 9 sprint car. “I was actually starting to get frustrated a little bit. I felt like I was really good in traffic. The cautions kinda screwed up any chance we had to make up some ground in traffic."

Although McFadden was the star of the show during the final five circuits, it was Grain Valley, Missouri’s Brian Brown who earned the initial jump, utilizing the pole position to scoot away to a comfortable lead during the first 12 circuits. Visalia, California’s Cory Eliason chased Brown from the runner-up spot, followed by Josh Baughman, James McFadden, and Aaron Reutzel.

Near-flawless at the front of the field, and only tripped up by slower traffic on one occasion, Brian Brown was seemingly in complete control, that until caution flags waved for a slowing Aaron Reutzel with 12 laps recorded.

Unfortunately, while slowing for the caution, Brown bumped the inside berm causing the multi-time Knoxville Raceway feature winner to lose the handle of his familiar no. 21 and spin to the stop. That mishap ultimately forced Brown to surrender the top spot to Josh Baughman; Aaron Reutzel’s car owner and teammate who had already slipped into second by lap six.

When green flag action returned, it was Baughman who was now the man in charge, now followed by James McFadden, Cory Eliason, Justin Henderson, and Brock Zearfoss. Baughman remained in control for 13 circuits, working as hard as he could to keep McFadden and Eliason off of his shoulders.

By lap 25, McFadden was all over Baughman for the lead, knocking down the advantage to less than a car length by the time the frontrunners received the five-to-go signal from the flagstand.

Although McFadden’s first bid for the top spot did not succeed in turns one and two, his efforts in the next two corners prevailed, jamming the Kasey Kahne Racing entry between Baughman and the inside berm as the pair raced into turn three on lap 26. The move sealed the deal, allowing McFadden to drive on to score the $10,000 payday. Eliason powered ahead to finish second, followed by Josh Baughman, a hard-charging Kerry Madsen from 18th, and Justin Henderson.

"I'm proud of this team," McFadden added. "It has been a great few days."

A pair of starts in the Hawkeye State will conclude the four-day, All Star jaunt through the Midwest including a visit to the famed Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, on Saturday, July 27, followed by a stop at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, on Sunday, July 28. Saving the biggest event for last, of course, Sunday’s visit to 34 Raceway will feature the highly-anticipated Inaugural Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race awarding a grand prize equalling $26,000.

James McFadden opens four-day All Star trek with victory at Plymouth Dirt Track

PLYMOUTH, Wis. (July 26, 2019) - Snapping an All Star winless streak that dates back to May of 2015, Brisbane, Australia’s James McFadden helped the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1, as well as the Bumper-to-Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series, kick off their four-day trip through the Midwest by finding victory lane, doing so at the always-exciting Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wisconsin, on Thursday night, July 25.

Although in charge for the majority of the 30-lap program, the first 11 circuits were certainly a challenge for the now three-time All Star Circuit of Champions feature winner, ultimately powering his way forward from the outside of row two, all while waging war with Monrovia, Illinois’ Justin Peck, who led from the drop of the green flag until McFadden took control on lap 12.

“Oh man, this feels good. We’ve been close on so many occasions, so it just feels great to get it done here tonight,” James McFadden expressed, driver of the Kasey Kahne Racing with Mike Curb/Curb Records/Wicked Energy Gum/Wicked Cushion/No. 9 sprint car. “I can’t thank Kasey Kahne and this entire team enough for this opportunity. The track really played into our favor tonight. Hopefully we can do it again this weekend.”

Although forced to start fourth on the grid due to his All Star Circuit of Champions dash result, it only took one circuit for McFadden to find himself within striking distance, actually bumping ahead two spots into second by the completion of lap one, quickly setting aim on Justin Peck, who led the first lap from the pole position.

By lap six, lapped traffic was already a factor, ultimately giving McFadden an opportunity to pounce as Peck tried to work around slower traffic. Despite Peck’s ability to get through the slower cars, McFadden stayed in view, actually pressuring Peck in the form of side-by-side racing on multiple occasions during laps nine through 11.

By lap 12, McFadden was in position to challenge for the lead, eventually using a hard drive into turns one and two to pull even with Peck down the backstretch, soon followed by a slider into turns three and four. For McFadden, the bid for the top spot worked, securing the lead by the exit of turn four. Unfortunately, the lap was eventually negated, as Peck, who drove just as hard into turn three with the intention to get back around McFadden, stumbled on the cushion, caught the lip and flipped. Peck would walk away unharmed, but the incident would allow McFadden to inherit the top spot, anyhow.

Although forced to deal with two more cautions, one of which for another red flag incident on lap 15, McFadden remained in control at the front of the field, only pressured slightly on laps 19 through 23, as a pair of former All Star champions, Greg Wilson and Dale Blaney, edged their noses into a fight for the lead. Traffic did pop back into the picture on lap 17 creating a slight hiccup for the former World Series of Sprintcars champion, but it proved to be no match for McFadden, continuing to utilize the bottom groove around Plymouth Dirt Track to remain the man on top.

Greg Wilson would chase McFadden to the final checkers, followed by Dale Blaney, a hard-charging Aaron Reutzel from 14th, and Paul McMahan.

With a six hour tow to the west to hurdle, the All Star Circuit of Champions will continue their four-race weekend on Friday night, July 26, at the state-of-the-art Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minnesota. The first of two five-figure paydays on the weekend, the All Stars will battle for a $10,000 winner’s share during their visit to southern Minnesota, and much like their stint in Wisconsin, the All Stars will not return to the ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes’ in 2019.
