Aaron Reutzel passes Cole Duncan late for All Star victory at Eriez Speedway

ERIE, Pa. (July 20, 2018) - Lockbourne, Ohio’s Cole Duncan was just four circuits away from claiming a second consecutive Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory at Eriez Speedway on Friday night when Clute, Texas’ Aaron Reutzel stepped-up and stole the show. Utilizing lapped traffic during the closing circuits of the 30-lapper, Reutzel, who started fourth on the feature grid, was able to drive underneath Duncan at the exit of turn two on lap 27, ultimately ending a high paced, nose-to-tail chase around Eriez Speedway.

Still well in command of the All Star Circuit of Champions’ season win list, the I-79 Summer Shootout victory increased Reutzel’s win total to six on the year with all six occurring at different facilities. In addition, Reutzel became the fifth different driver in five All Star Circuit of Champions starts to earn a trip to Eriez Speedway victory lane.

The “Wild Child” Jac Haudenschild crossed under the final checkers just behind Duncan and Reutzel, followed by Dave Blaney and Tim Shaffer.

“For the most part, we were pretty equal tonight,” Aaron Reutzel said of Cole Duncan. “It was going to take lapped traffic for me to get around him. It just played out perfect for us. It was one of those nights where we were better off running second.”

Jumping to third after the initial green, Reutzel’s chase for the top spot commenced with just a few laps recorded, actually sneaking around Tyler Esh to take the second spot officially on lap two. Showing signs of potential early, Reutzel’s first, official bid for the top spot occurred on lap six, utilizing a slide job through turns three and four to get by Cole Duncan. Unfortunately for Reutzel, the pass was negated due to a caution just as the leaders were about to cross by the flagstand.

In clean air, Duncan was dominant, keeping a safe distance between himself and the field for the first 14 circuits, especially after caution flags reappeared on lap 11 clearing the track ahead of him. By lap 21, traffic started to become an obvious factor allowing Reutzel to cut down on Duncan’s advantage. The pair raced nearly nose-to-tail for the next six circuits before Reutzel made his winning move, capitalizing on Duncan’s failed attempt to maneuver around slower cars as the duo battled off of turn two on lap 27.

From that point forward, it was all Aaron Reutzel at the front of the field, eventually driving away from his fellow frontrunners during the final three circuits to earn a trip to the frontstretch victory lane.

The All Star Circuit of Champions will continue I-79 Summer Shootout weekend with a Saturday night visit to “Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile.”

Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway (PPMS), located just minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, will host Tony Stewart’s All Stars on just one occasion in 2018; the final Western Pennsylvania visit for the Series this season. Incidentally, All Star Circuit of Champions owner, Tony Stewart, earned the top prize at PPMS one year ago, claiming the $5,000 payday over Lemoore, California’s Carson Macedo and 1881 Racing’s Lee Jacobs on Monday, July 24.

Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway will allow pit access beginning at 12 p.m. A mandatory All Star drivers meeting will take shape at 6 p.m., followed by hot laps at 6:40 p.m. Those seeking additional news and notes should visit PPMS live on the Web at www.ppms.com.

Dave Blaney wins at Sharon Speedway for second Lou Blaney Memorial title

HARTFORD, Ohio (July 7, 2018) - In appropriate fashion, the “Buckeye Bullet” Dave Blaney earned the Lou Blaney Memorial crown on Saturday night at Sharon Speedway, becoming the first repeat winner of the prestigious event in its ten year history. Blaney, son of the legendary Lou Blaney, earned his 49th career Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 triumph in exciting fashion, ultimately holding off Western Pennsylvania regular George Hobaugh and a fast charging Spencer Bayston in front of a packed house to claim the $5,000 winner’s share.

“This is really special for me and my entire family. I’m really happy to win this race,” Dave Blaney said in victory lane, driver of the Premier Motorsports/Mohawk Northeast/No. 70. “To be honest, the last couple of weeks we’ve been working to win this race. You kinda know what you’re going to get when you come to Sharon; it is slick and smooth and wide. We had enough for them tonight, I guess. Pete Grove, my car owner, won this race a few years back with Danny Holtgraver. I couldn’t be happier to get my first All Star win of the year here at Sharon.”

By way of dash victory, Blaney’s campaign at the front of the field started from the outside-front row, earning the initial jump over fellow front row starter Carl Bowser and fifth-starting George Hobaugh. Although he was the class of the field during the early segments of the 30-lapper, extending his lead to nearly four seconds just before the midpoint, Blaney’s stronghold over the field was soon interrupted by traffic. Hobaugh, who advanced to the runner-up spot on lap two, was able to chip away at Blaney’s advantage in traffic, cutting it down to less than two seconds by lap 18, then down to just a half-second by lap 20.

With traffic intensifying in Blaney’s preferred groove around the bottom of the speedway, the 2014 Lou Blaney Memorial champion had no choice but to shift lanes and move to the top of the speedway. The desperate lane shift would not only cost momentum, but also cost Blaney the point position, as Hobaugh was able to slip underneath Blaney to officially lead the 22nd circuit. Realizing he needed to move back to the bottom, Blaney recovered in a hurry, eventually working back by Hobaugh as the pair battled a lapped car down the back straightaway. Blaney shut the door on Hobaugh entering turn three and regained control of the field to lead lap 23.

A caution the following circuit would allow Blaney the opportunity to catch his breath. With clean air and an open track in view, Blaney cruised on to lead the remaining circuits unscathed, only encountering lapped traffic slightly before the final checkers flew. Hobaugh held on to finish second to earn his career-best finish with the All Star Circuit of Champions, followed by a cushion-pounding Spencer Bayston from eighth, Gary Taylor, and Chad Kemenah.

“I was just trying to keep myself calm. I was driving around and said ‘oh sh--, there’s (Dave Blaney),’” George Hobaugh said with a laugh, driver of the Hobaugh’s Auto Parts/Matus Motorsports/No. 40. “It’s really awesome to run with these guys. I got to watch Lou (Blaney) race as a kid, so to be out here racing with Dave is just a blast.”

“You never know what is going on behind you,” Blaney explained regarding the lead exchange. “I didn’t want to get bottled up too bad behind the lapped cars, so I decided to move up the race track. It may have worked a tiny bit, but not enough.”

With many All Star Circuit of Champions competitors planning to enter the upcoming Brad Doty Classic at Attica Raceway Park, as well as the 35th Annual Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway, the 2018 All Star calendar will take a weekend off before returning to competition on Friday and Saturday, July 20 & 21, with a pair of stops in Western Pennsylvania, this time visiting Eriez Speedway and Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway, respectively. Dubbed the I-79 Summer Shootout, the weekend double will be the final Western Pennsylvania visit for the traveling All Stars in 2018.

Aaron Reutzel wins Summer Slash at Route 66; Sweeps weekend with Arctic Cat All Stars presented by Mobil 1

JOLIET, Ill. (June 30, 2018) - Officially sweeping the two-day Indiana/Illinois road trip, Clute, Texas, native Aaron Reutzel cruised to his fifth Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory of the 2018 season on Saturday night, this time scoring a $5,000 payday during a visit to the Dirt Oval @ Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois. Reutzel, who was forced to overcome engine issues early in the program, took command for the first time on lap seven and never looked back, eventually surviving a few bobbles on a fast, but tricky curb, ultimately keeping a hard charging Dave Blaney at bay.

Six-time and defending All Star champion Chad Kemenah chased Blaney and Reutzel to the final checkers, followed by Lemoore, California’s Carson Macedo and Nashville’s Paul McMahan.

“This goes to show what kind of a team we have,” Aaron Reutzel said in victory lane with MAVTV Motorsports Network cameras rolling. “Hurting a motor earlier today really threw a wrench in our plans. Lucky for me, my guys were able to get that changed pretty quick. Besides that hiccup, we never really struggled tonight. We were able to put ourselves in a key position in the heat race, followed up with a solid dash finish, and then a win.”

Reutzel’s first, official bid for the top spot occurred on lap seven, actually driving around two competitors in one circuit to claim the race lead. Utilizing the very topside of the speedway while racing in the third position, the driver of the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports/No. 87 entry powered around Parker Price-Miller at the exit of turn two to gain the runner-up spot, just before nailing a perfect slider on race leader Jac Haudenschild at the exit of turn four. The textbook slider worked perfectly, maintaining control as the front-runners raced by the flagstand to complete lap seven.

Reutzel’s campaign at the front of the field was not all gravy, forced to withstand four cautions and periods of heavy traffic. Perhaps Reutzel’s biggest challenge was the topside cushion, nearly biting the former ASCS national champion with less than five laps remaining. By that time, Dave Blaney, who had already charged from 21st to second, was closing-in on the familiar No. 87. Although strong around the bottom groove, Reutzel’s momentum on top was stronger, holding on to score his second All Star victory in as many days.

“This track really reminds me of a track we have back home,” Reutzel continued. “That track is really hard on left rears, so I knew I had to keep my left rear under me and just keep the tires from spinning. Once I got to third right from the start, I just kinda went into cruise mode. I was able to get around Parker [Price-Miller] and then make a slider work on Jac [Haudenschild]. That last caution actually saved me because I think I had the wing a little too far back. I’m glad to get this done.”

With the month of June officially in the books, the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 will move ahead and begin preparations for an action-packed July agenda, first visiting Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio, for the 10th Annual Lou Blaney Memorial on Saturday evening, July 7.

Tony Stewart’s All Stars visited Sharon Speedway twice thus far in 2018; once for the inaugural Buckeye Cup in early May, followed by a visit during Ohio Sprint Speedweek in mid-June. Two different winners were crowned including Aaron Reutzel in May, followed by Christopher Bell during the 36th edition of Speedweek.

Aaron Reutzel gets fourth All Star victory of season during visit to Plymouth Speedway

PLYMOUTH, Ind. (June 29, 2018) - Clute, Texas’ Aaron Reutzel made the most of his pole position on Friday night, leading all 41 circuits at Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Indiana, to earn his fourth Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory of the 2018 season, solidly on top of the Series’ season win count.

The main event, originally scheduled to go 35 laps in distance, was adjusted to 41 laps to honor the late, great Jason Johnson.

“This is a special win for me and my team. To win a 41-lap race in honor of Jason Johnson is very special, and really emotional, ” said Aaron Reutzel in victory lane, driver Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports/Folkens Brothers Trucking/Fischer Body Shop/No. 87 sprint car. “I’ve known Jason a long time. I watched him race a lot in the area where I am from, and when I started to build a race team, he helped me out a lot. My car actually had a fuel line come off tonight, but I was too stubborn to stop. I wanted to win this one.”

Reutzel’s campaign at the front of the field was nearly flawless. After withstanding a trio of cautions during the first 11 circuits, one of which resulting in open red flag conditions due to a lengthy caution clean up effort, it was smooth sailing for the former ASCS national champion, ultimately sneaking away just enough in traffic to keep anywhere between a half-straightaway and a full straightaway between himself and second place running Jac Haudenschild.

Although escaping unscathed, Reutzel’s only close call of the 41-lap program occurred on lap 29 when the Texan caught a trio of lapped cars at once, forcing Reutzel to take evasive action and split all three competitors. With clearer lanes ahead, especially his preferred lane around the topside of the speedway, Reutzel drove on to score the $5,000 payday by a margin of victory equalling 1.34 seconds.

Chasing Reutzel most of the way, Jac Haudenschild finished second at Plymouth Speedway, and although he was able to keep Reutzel within two seconds at the final checkers, the “Wild Child” was never in any position to take the top spot from Reutzel. Lemoore, California’s Carson Macedo finished third from tenth on the grid, followed by Brady Bacon and Chad Kemenah.

Continuing on down the highway, the Dirt Oval at Route 66 in Joliet, Ill., will welcome the All Star Circuit of Champions for the second time in Series history on Saturday, June 30. Joining the stars and cars of the IRA Outlaw Sprint Series, the “Summer Slash” event at the state-of-the-art motorsports complex, the first and only All Star visit to the Land of Lincoln in 2018, will be a “must see” experience for any open wheel enthusiast. The All Star Circuit of Champions will face-off against many of the IRA’s best including multi-time IRA champion, Bill Balog; current Series point leader and two-time winner, Scotty Thiel; 2018 championship contenders, Jake Blackhurst and Jeremy Schultz; and 2018 IRA opening night winner, Steve Meyer.

MAVTV Motorsports Network, the official television home of the All Star Circuit of Champions in 2018, will be on hand to capture all of the action from the Dirt Oval at Route 66 on Saturday evening. The entire program will be recorded for a tape-delay broadcast set for later in the year. An updated MAVTV/All Star broadcast schedule will be published later this summer.

Cole Duncan claims inaugural Rick Ferkel Classic title; Paul McMahan earns Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by C&R Racing championship

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (June 23, 2018) - An emotional victory to say the least, Lockbourne, Ohio’s Cole Duncan smoked the field on Saturday night at Atomic Speedway, not only capping off Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by C&R Racing with a trip to victory lane, but honoring his life-long racing hero in the process by claiming the inaugural Rick Ferkel Classic worth $10,000.

Starting from the pole position by way of dash victory, Duncan led all 35 circuits on Saturday night at the Atomic highbanks, keeping the “Buckeye Bullet” Dave Blaney and Lemoore, California’s Carson Macedo at bay. The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory bumped his career win total to four with the Series, his second in Chillicothe.

“I just went over and told Rick (Ferkel) he is one of my all-time heroes,” a teary-eyed Cole Duncan said in victory lane. “To earn this, the inaugural Rick Ferkel Classic win, there are no words. To do this at my home track, in front of all of these great fans, with my family and friends here, means so much to me.”

Duncan was able to run away from the field right from the drop of the green flag, leading defending All Star champion Chad Kemenah, and fellow Ohio native Dave Blaney, by the flagstand for the first time. By lap eight, Duncan was already in traffic, eventually allowing Blaney to chip away at his advantage with Carson Macedo in tow. Although intense during certain segments of the main event, Duncan maneuvered through the lapped cars well, always keeping at least a pair between himself and Blaney.

The main event’s first and only caution appeared on lap 30 giving Blaney an opportunity to restart on the back bumper of Duncan. Blaney’s restart attempt was good, but not good enough, unable to work by the familiar No. 22. Duncan went on the score the five-figure payday; certainly the most sentimental victory of this young career.

“Being the leader, you never really know how far out ahead you are. I felt really good, so I felt really confident the entire race,” Cole Duncan continued. “It started to lay some rubber down in certain spots, especially in the exit of the corners. You can race anywhere you want, but you have to make sure you are in the rubber when you exit the corners. It made lapped traffic a little difficult, but we were really good in traffic. I was just praying the tires would stay under me. It all worked out.”

Cole Duncan won the battle, but Paul McMahan won the war, claiming the 36th Annual Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by C&R Racing championship worth $3,000. McMahan’s Ohio Sprint Speedweek campaign included one victory - the Speedweek opener at Attica Raceway Park - as well as a grand total of six top-ten finishes in seven starts. Four of McMahan’s top-ten finishes were inside the top-five. The Speedweek title was the first of McMahan’s storied career.

“People had me written off a few years back, so to come back and do this is pretty special,” Paul McMahan said while celebrating his Speedweek title with crew. “We only won one race this week, but this goes to show that consistency wins championships. To clinch this title during Rick Ferkel’s race makes things even more special. I had the opportunity to race for Rick at one point. He is someone I have always looked up to. I’m glad to be here.”

Atomic Speedway/Speedweek Night #6 Rescheduled Feature Report:

The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 kicked-off the evening program at Atomic Speedway by running the Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by C&R Racing night six feature that was originally scheduled for Wednesday evening, June 20. Mother Nature invaded Chillicothe just as feature cars were beginning to be pushed out onto the speedway. A heavy downpour forced officials to postpone the event until Saturday.

Utilizing patience to power himself to a 35th-career All Star Circuit of Champions triumph, Alvada, Ohio’s Chad Kemenah was the first to visit victory lane on Saturday evening at Atomic Speedway, leading all 30 circuits during the Wednesday make-up feature to clinch his first All Star victory since winning the 2018 Series opener in Ocala, Florida.

The driver of the Hunter Racing/DKW Transport/Seneca Energy/Bonnell’s Rod Shop/No. 10H earned the top spot right from the drop of the green flag, powering ahead of fellow front row starter, Justin Peck, as the pair raced into turn one for the first time. Although dominate from the start, Kemenah’s trip to victory lane was far from down an easy path. Kemenah was forced to survive six stoppages during the 30-lapper, two of which resulting in red flag conditions.

“My car owner, Rob Hunter, really messed up today; he took the night off and stayed home tonight,” Chad Kemenah laughed in victory lane. “This is really cool. It feels great to get this done. To say our Speedweek has been up and down is an understatement, but this team doesn’t give up. I felt like we got better after that first red. (Brian Kemenah) came out and made some adjustments that really helped out the car. I lost a race on the final lap here to Dave Blaney last year. I’d drive into the fence before I let that happen again.”

Although it was Kemenah in control, it was Ryan Smith and Paul McMahan who were putting on the show, battling almost side-by-side for the runner-up position for a multitude of laps. Continuing to substitute for Max McGhee, Smith secured the runner-up spot for the first time on lap six. McMahan, a two-time winner thus far in 2018 for car owner Tom Buch, powered into third for the first time on lap eight.

The duo exchanged positions four times between laps 16 and 26 beginning with McMahan getting by Smith after a restart on lap 16. Smith returned the favor on lap 21, but it would not last long, as McMahan was able to sneak back by the familiar No. 11 after a restart on lap 22. The caution on lap 22, waved for an upside-down Mitch Harble, was the final stop of the night. It followed a trio of yellow flags during the first half of the main event on laps five, ten, and fourteen, as well as a red flag on lap 18 for Parker Price-Miller who was battling inside the top-five. All drivers involved in all accidents walked away unharmed.

Once green flag action returned following the lap 22 caution, McMahan and Smith’s battle resumed. By lap 26, Smith was all over McMahan again, ultimately powering back around the Nashville native via Elk Grove, Calif., to officially regain second on lap 26. After gaining second for the final time, Smith set his aim for Kemenah, working as hard as he could to match Kemenah’s pace through the middle of the speedway. A late charge would put Smith within a half-second of Kemenah, but time was out. Kemenah held on for the $5,000 payday, followed Ryan Smith, Paul McMahan, Jac Haudenschild, and Cap Henry.

With Ohio Sprint Speedweek in the books, the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 will continue on down the highway and end the month of June with a pair of stops in the Midwest, first visiting Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, Ind., on Friday, June 29, followed by a stop at the Dirt Oval at Route 66 in Joliet, Ill., on Saturday, June 30. If needed, Plymouth Speedway officials will utilize Sunday, July 1, as a rain date.

MAVTV Motorsports Network will be on hand to capture all of the action from Plymouth Speedway on Friday night. The second-ever All Star program at the northern Indiana oval will be aired on MAVTV later this year. A full broadcast schedule will be released later this summer.

Mother Nature takes out Limaland; $10,000-to-win Rick Ferkel Classic to conclude Ohio Sprint Speedweek

LIMA, Ohio (June 22, 2018) - Heavy rain throughout the day Thursday, as well as heavy rain predicted throughout the day Friday, has forced Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 officials to cancel Friday’s Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by C&R Racing visit to Limaland Motorsports Park.

Heavy precipitation on Thursday left most of the facility under water, and with high percentages of additional rain in the forecast for Friday, the track will be left with very little, if any drying time.

The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 will conclude the 36th edition of Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by C&R Racing back at Atomic Speedway on Saturday, June 23, this time battling for a $10,000 top prize during the inaugural Rick Ferkel Classic.

In addition, Wednesday’s Ohio Sprint Speedweek night six feature from Atomic Speedway, which was washed out just as cars were beginning to stage, will also be conducted on Saturday evening. Rick Ferkel Classic hot laps and qualifying will take shape first at Atomic Speedway on Saturday, followed by Wednesday’s make-up feature, then concluding with all remaining preliminary action and the $10,000-to-win Rick Ferkel Classic main event.

The 2018 Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by C&R Racing champion will also be crowned on Saturday night. The 2018 champion will receive a $3,000 payday.

Atomic Speedway will open pit gates at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. The All Star drivers meeting will take shape at 5:30 p.m., followed by hot laps at 6 p.m., sharp. If needed, Atomic Speedway and All Star officials will utilize the previously scheduled rain date of Sunday, June 24.
