Joey Saldana earns first Wayne County All Star victory since 1999
ORRVILLE, OH (July 1, 2017) - Despite 18 years separating Joey Saldana from his last visit to Wayne County Speedway, the result remained the same; a victory against the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions.
Saldana, aboard the Indy Race Parts/No. 71, led 15 of the 30 circuits on Saturday night to claim the $5,000 winner’s share at Orrville’s Historic Oval, utilizing a lap 16 restart to slingshot underneath early race leader, Chad Kemenah. The victory, his first Arctic Cat All Star victory since 2014 at Volusia Speedway Park, increased Saldana’s overall Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions win count to 72, five of which at Wayne County Speedway which ties “The Brownsburg Bullet” with Sheldon Haudenschild for the most all-time.
Lockbourne, Ohio’s Cole Duncan charged from seventh to finish second at Wayne County Speedway, followed by Chad Kemenah, Ryan Smith and pole-sitter Dean Jacobs.
“This just goes to show how important it is to be around a great team,” Joey Saldana explained in victory lane. “Sprint car racing is really tough, and it is really easy to get down on yourself. Tonight just goes to show that it’s not just you, it’s a whole team, and tonight I had a whole team. I raced with the All Stars for a long time. It was the feeding ground for the World of Outlaws. Racing with this Series did a lot for me. Luckily for me I was lucky enough to take that next step and move forward.”
Before Saldana made his winning move on lap 16, it was all Dean Jacobs and Chad Kemenah at the front of the running order. Despite a number of cautions halting action, one of which during the opening green resulting in a four car pile-up, Jacobs and Kemenah battled relentlessly, racing side-by-side nearly all the way around Wayne County Speedway.
Jacobs led the first six circuits officially, ultimately losing the lead to Kemenah on lap seven, only to regain control again to officially lead laps eight through 11. Kemenah drove back under Jacobs at the entrance of turn three to solidify himself back on top of the field on lap 12, only to be halted by red flag conditions on lap 13, and another caution on lap 16. By that point, Saldana had already worked his way into second, now setting his sights on the five-time and defending Arctic Cat All Star champion.
When green flag action returned, Saldana chased Chad Kemenah into turns one and two, ultimately setting up a drag race through turn three where Saldana would drove under the Hunter Racing/Seneca Energy/DKW Transport/No. 10H. From that point forward, “The Brownsburg Bullet” was the show, and despite one more caution pausing his momentum, Saldana would pull ahead to win by 3.3 seconds.
“It feels really good to be back here, and to be tied with Sheldon Haudenschild is pretty cool,” Saldana said. “He’s the next best thing in sprint car racing. He has a lot of talent.”
The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will continue competition on Saturday evening, July 8, with a visit to Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio; the second and final visit by the Arctic Cat All Stars in 2017, as well as the 100th overall appearance since the Series first made the trek to Hartford in 1970.
The 9th Annual Lou Blaney Memorial, honoring the late National Sprint Car Hall of Fame inductee, will headline competition at the state-of-the-art facility on Saturday evening. The Arctic Cat All Stars will battle for a $5,000 top prize.

Cole Duncan earns Ohio Sprint Speedweek finale victory, Tim Shaffer claims third Speedweek championship
CHILLICOTHE, OH (June 25, 2017) - Ending a near-four year drought, Lockbourne, Ohio’s Cole Duncan is back in Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions victory lane, this time earning the 35th Annual Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket finale win at Atomic Speedway over a field of 53 entries. The pilot of the Helms Construction/Motor City Auto Transport/Ohio Heating/No. 22C earned his $5,000 payday from the outside of row three, utilizing a lap 21 restart to take command officially on lap 22 over Muskingum County Speedway winner, Spencer Bayston. Duncan chased Bayston for six circuits before making the winning move, eventually driving under the familiar Kevin Swindell-owned No. 39 through turns three and four.
Duncan’s victory caps off an impressive Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket campaign for the second generation Arctic Cat All Star winner, finishing tied for second in the final Ohio Sprint Speedweek championship standings on the strength of one victory and five top-ten finishes, three of which inside the top-five. Despite ending in a tie, Duncan will be declared the official runner-up due to having a victory over Chad Kemenah.
Spencer Bayston held on to finish second on Saturday night at Atomic Speedway, followed by DJ Foos, Tanner Thorson and Caleb Armstrong.
“Man, I’ve been waiting to talk to you for a long time,” Cole Duncan explained in victory lane. “I just want to thank all of the fans for coming out tonight. It was a near-perfect night for racing. The track was in perfect shape. I’m so glad Brad (McCown) opened this place back up and did what he did. It feels so good to be in victory lane during an All Star event at my home track. This is the first Speedweek I’ve ever completed. I’m so proud of everyone.”
Cole Duncan won the battle on Saturday night, but it was the “Steel City Outlaw” Tim Shaffer who won the war, claiming his third Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket point championship worth $1,000. Shaffer’s Speedweek run ended with two victories, the first at Eldora Speedway and the second at Waynesfield Raceway Park, as well as five top-ten finishes, edging out Cole Duncan and Chad Kemenah in the final Ohio Sprint Speedweek title fight by 14 points.
“This was definitely a whole group effort. They did a great job, which made me look even better than I was,” said Tim Shaffer. “We’re running well at a perfect time of the year. I’m having more fun now than I ever have. They gave me a great car here tonight. We have the engines and the parts; everything we need to be better.”
The Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will continue competition with visits to Kokomo (IN) Speedway and Wayne County (OH) Speedway on Friday and Saturday, June 30 and July 1. The Kokomo Speedway program was originally set for Friday, May 19, but was postponed due to Mother Nature. Tony Stewart, three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and Arctic Cat All Star owner, will join the field at Indiana’s baddest bullring; the only Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions appearance in the state of Indiana for 2017. Rico Abreu is the most recent winner during Arctic Cat All Star competition at Kokomo Speedway, earning the 2016 Dirt Classic Indiana worth $12,500.
The upcoming Wayne County Speedway appearance will be the third of five for the Arctic Cat All Stars in 2017, most recently during Ohio Sprint Speedway presented by Cometic Gasket on Monday, June 19. Kyle Larson was the Speedweek winner, his first of two Ohio Sprint Speedweek victories with the second coming one night later at Sharon (OH) Speedway.

Spencer Bayston goes wire-to-wire for Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket victory at Muskingum County Speedway
DRESDEN, OH (June 22, 2017) - For the second time in 2017, and for the second time in his career, Lebanon, Indiana’s Spencer Bayston is an Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions main event winner, this time scoring $5,000 during round six of Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket at Muskingum County Speedway.
Aboard the Kevin Swindell-owned/Premier Truck Group/John Christner Trucking/No. 39, Bayston led all 30 circuits on Thursday evening at the Dresden-area oval, manhandling multiple waves of intense traffic, as well as an aggressive cushion at the top of the speedway, to clinch his first Arctic Cat All Star win since April. Fellow Indiana native Caleb Armstrong finished second, followed by Chad Kemenah, Tim Shaffer and Cole Duncan.
“I’m going to get most of the credit here tonight, but the people who really deserve the credit are the ones standing behind me,” Spencer Bayston said in victory lane. “This is a brand new race car. We rolled one over the other night at Wayne County Speedway, so we’ve been up until about four in the morning the last few nights working to get this one ready. Kevin and Jordan [Swindell], the whole crew; they all work so hard and make all of this happen. Without them, I wouldn’t be standing up here.”
Bayston’s 30-lap campaign at the front of the field started from the pole position, taking command right from the drop of the green flag over Caleb Armstrong and two-time Speedweek winner Tim Shaffer. Two early cautions, the first on lap five and the second on lap ten, were the only two momentum breakers for Bayston, but neither created any sort of distraction. Bayston’s lead was nearly three seconds on multiple occasions even while racing in traffic, and despite having to deal with dirty air, the Indiana native hardly faltered.
“We got to dirty air in traffic and my whole race changed it felt like,” Bayston said. “I had to kinda drive above [the cushion] a couple times, but it almost didn’t work for me because I nearly looped it. Despite all of that, I never really felt any pressure, so I was able to just cruise and bring it home.”
Caleb Armstrong’s runner-up finish was a season-high for the New Castle, Indiana, native. The second year Arctic Cat All Star traveler started second on the feature grid and battled in that position all 30 laps. Chad Kemenah, the current Arctic Cat All Star championship point leader, charged from 11th to finish third, solid enough to earn MSD Performance Hard Charger Award honors.
Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio, will continue Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket with round seven of competition on Friday evening, June 23. Limaland has hosted the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions on 30 separate occasions since their first visit in 1983, the most recent during the 2016 edition of Ohio Sprint Speedweek on June 24, 2016. “The Hurricane” Randy Hannagan scored the $5,000 top prize, his first-ever at the high banked quarter-mile during Arctic Cat All Star competition.

Tim Shaffer holds back Danny Dietrich for Waynesfield Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket victory
WAYNESFIELD, OH (June 21, 2017) - A battle that lasted nearly 15 circuits around the Waynesfield Raceway Park high banks, the “Steel City Outlaw” Tim Shaffer held off Pennsylvania Posse invader Danny Dietrich to earn his second victory in five rounds of Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket, scoring not only a $5,000 top prize, but also solidifying a $500 bonus on behalf of Cometic Gasket.
The victory, a first-ever at Waynesfield Raceway Park during Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions competition, raises Shaffer’s career win total to 58 with “America’s Series.” “Double-D” Danny Dietrich held on to finish second at the conclusion of the 35-lap program, followed by Chad Kemenah, Cole Duncan and Parker Price-Miller.
“I just can’t say enough about this race team. Hats off to all of my guys tonight. They did a great job,” Tim Shaffer explained in victory lane. “I’m surrounded by great people. We are having a lot of fun right now. When we win, it’s even better. This is awesome.”
Tim Shaffer’s campaign at the front of the field commenced on lap 16, finally working around early race leader and Aussie visitor Sammy Walsh. After taking command of the top spot, the Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, native soon entered traffic, eventually tracked down by Danny Dietrich who worked into second by lap 18. Despite Shaffer’s ability to navigate traffic, Dietrich never lost sight of the Rudzik Excavating/Scoville Designs/VRP Shocks/No. 49X, racing within two to three car lengths even while racing through periods of heavy traffic.
By lap 28, traffic intensified and so did the battle for the lead, as Dietrich made several attempts to work underneath Shaffer through both corners of the speedway. After avoiding chaos while racing three wide with a lapped car, Shaffer and Dietrich ended up making contact at the exit of turn four, ultimately ending all of Dietrich’s momentum. Shaffer’s lead quickly opened back up, crossing under the final checkers nearly two seconds ahead of Dietrich.
“I just had to sit up in the seat,” Tim Shaffer said. “The ledge on the race track was really tricky tonight and we had a really tight race car on top of that. We had that delay for the lighting issues, so we used that to talk about how we could make the car better. Cody (Jacobs) made some changes and it felt a lot better. At the end of the day, I got lucky.”
For Danny Dietrich, the runner-up finish increases his top-five streak to two during Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket, all beginning with a fifth place performance on Tuesday evening at Sharon Speedway.

For the first time since June 27, 2006, the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will return to the Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio, this time for round six of Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket on Thursday evening, June 22. “America’s Series” has contested 12 separate events at Muskingum County Speedway since their first appearance in 1984. Of the 12 contested events, three drivers were victorious on more than one occasion; Kenny Jacobs, Dale Blaney and Kelly Kinser each own two wins.
Muskingum County Speedway will open pit gates at 3:00pm tomorrow afternoon, June 22. A mandatory drivers meeting will be conducted at 5:45pm, followed by hot laps at 6:30pm. Kyle Larson leads California podium sweep at Sharon Speedway; second consecutive Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket victory
HARTFORD, OH (June 20, 2017) - Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson picked up right where he left off on Monday evening, this time scoring a second consecutive Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket main event victory during competition at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio, ultimately holding off a pair of California natives for a $5,000 top prize.
Larson, who started sixth on the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions feature grid, wasted no time working his way to the front of the feature field. The pilot of the Paul Silva-owned/Finley Farms/No. 57 moved around early leader Rico Abreu on lap four, eventually withstanding multiple waves of traffic, as well as mid-race and late race charges from Abreu and Carson Macedo. The Arctic Cat All Star victory was the sixth of Larson’s career with all six occurring during Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket.
“It’s really cool to win this race a year after Bryan Clauson won this race. The Clauson family means a lot to me,” Kyle Larson explained. “Paul Silva really made some big improvements tonight. He tried some things in the dash, but we were really slow. He made some more changes and they really worked out. Hats off to Paul. He’s the smartest guy in the pit area.”
Kyle Larson was in charge, but the battle for second and third may have attracted just as much attention. Rico Abreu and Carson Macedo battled for nearly half of the entire 30-lap distance, exchanging positions and sliders on multiple occasions. Despite lap after lap of position swapping and slide job attempts, Macedo did not officially overtake Abreu for the runner-up position until lap 23.
“I had a lot of fun here tonight,” Macedo said, pilot of the Lucas Oil/Weld Wheels/Gaerte Engines by Topp Performance Race Parts/No. 3G. “This ended up being such an awesome race track. If you would have told me it was going to be that good at the beginning of the night, I would have never believed it. This team gave me a great car. Kyle Larson is the best right now. To run second to him, we’ll take that and move forward. I’m pretty happy. Everything is going pretty well for this team.”
A caution on lap 22 was the only pause during the Ohio Sprint Speedweek program. Despite the sudden stop in momentum, Larson used the restart to his advantage and instantly opened his lead to over two seconds. One last surge by Macedo with a few circuits remaining closed the gap, but Larson still crossed under the final checkers 1.25 seconds ahead of the running order.
“This dirt was great, too,” Larson explained. “You could run from the inside tires to the outside wall. I actually looked up at the scoreboard at one point and noticed that Macedo got around Abreu, so I knew he had to be pretty good because I saw Abreu’s nose a few times racing below me. I thought I was running a pretty good line which was going to make it hard for Macedo to pass me. I have no idea where he was running, whether it was on the top or bottom. Regardless, it’s pretty cool to have a California podium sweep here.”
Negating a prior statement, when the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions return to Sharon Speedway on July 8 for the annual Lou Blaney Memorial, race teams will compete for a $5,000 top prize, not the recently stated $10,000.
Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket will continue on Wednesday evening, June 21, with a visit to the Waynesfield Raceway Park near Waynesfield, Ohio. An event originally scheduled for Sunday, June 18, the fifth round of Ohio Sprint Speedweek will feature the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions for the tenth time in Waynesfield Raceway Park history, most recently during the 2016 edition of Ohio Sprint Speedweek when Wooster, Ohio’s Sheldon Haudenschild earned the $5,000 share.
Waynesfield Raceway Park will open pit gates at 3:00pm tomorrow afternoon, June 21, with main gates to follow at 5:00pm. Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions competition will begin with hot laps at 6:00pm, followed by racing at 7:00pm, sharp. Those who cannot attend should tune-in live on www.thecushion.com. A pay-per-view broadcast will be available for purchase which will include the entire evening program.

Kyle Larson climbs from eighth to win Ohio Sprint Speedweek round three at Wayne County Speedway
ORRVILLE, OH (June 20, 2017) - Less than a week after earning his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the 2017 season, and just 24 hours after earning his second NASCAR Cup Series victory of the 2017 season, Kyle Larson was victorious with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions, this time claiming round three of Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket on Monday, June 19, at Wayne County Speedway.
Larson, who started eighth on the main event grid, took command officially on lap 13 over Vienna, West Virginia’s Cale Conley. It was a fifth career victory for Larson during Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions competition, his second at Wayne County Speedway. Interestingly enough, all five Arctic Cat All Star victories during Larson’s career have taken shape during Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket.
“I was a little nervous during our dash tonight, but we were able to gain a few positions and increase our starting position by a few rows,” Larson explained in victory lane, pilot of the Finley Farms/Howard Johnson of Lima/No. 57. “I just tried to be patient the whole race. I knew we had a really good car.”
Larson’s march to the front started right from the drop of the green flag, appearing inside the top-five as early as lap six. A series of cautions, one for early race leader Brad Haudenschild, kept the feature field stacked together on three separate occasions during the first six circuits.
Unfortunately for all of those in attendance, one pause in action was caused by a power outage. The track lighting would soon reappear.
By lap nine, Larson moved his way into third, eventually setting up a pass to take second on lap 11, soon followed by the winning move on lap 13; driving under Cale Conley at the entrance of turn three and having full command by the exit of turn four. From that point forward, Larson was flawless, even surviving one final caution with less than two circuits remaining. Tim Shaffer and Caleb Helms, who were each battling for second and third in the running order, made contact just before the flagstand on lap 29. Their misfortune allowed Kasey Kahne and Chad Kemenah to solidify themselves on the podium.
“I got to traffic and I started to worry a little bit,” Kyle Larson explained. “I thought I saw the guys racing behind me creep up on my inside a little bit. I saw a ‘4’ and ‘10’ on the scoreboard and I thought Kasey [Kahne] and Chad [Kemenah] both started pretty far back, so I knew they had to be pretty good. Luckily, we hung on those last few laps and got the win.”
With two, full nights in the books, the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions will continue Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket competition on Tuesday evening with an appearance at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio. It will be the first of two visits by the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions at the state-of-the-art venue, with the second awarding $10,000 on Saturday, July 8, during the annual Lou Blaney Memorial.
Sharon Speedway will open pit gates at 4:00pm tomorrow - Tuesday, June 20 - with hot laps to follow at 6:20pm. Tim Shaffer conquers Eldora Speedway to officially kick-off Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket
Speedweek action continues Sunday at Waynesfield Raceway Park
ROSSBURG, OH (June 17, 2017) - Dominating in every way possible on Saturday night at the World’s Greatest Dirt Track, the “Steel City Outlaw” Tim Shaffer launched the 35th edition of Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket in incredible fashion; leading all 30 laps around the Eldora Speedway half-mile to score the 57th Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions main event victory of his career, also claiming $5,000 in the process.
Shaffer not only conquered Eldora Speedway during main event competition, crossing under the final checkers 4.24 seconds ahead of the field, but the pilot of the Rudzik Excavating/Scoville Designs/VRP Shocks/No. 49X also set the fastest time of the night during qualifying time trials, won his respective heat race, and won his respective dash. Adding to his long list of career accomplishments, the Eldora Speedway victory was a first-ever for the Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, native during Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions competition.
“I’ve never won an All Star race [at Eldora Speedway], so this is great,” Tim Shaffer said in victory lane. “I can’t thank this team enough, and for allowing us to put this deal together. My guys worked their butts off tonight. Cody Jacobs does a great job with these race cars. We’ll move ahead and try to do it again tomorrow night.”
After being penalized one row due to being late to the staging area, St. Helena, California’s Rico Abreu made an impressive charge from 18th on the main event grid to finish second, earning the MSD Hard Charger award for his efforts. A total of three cautions aided Abreu during his way through the feature field, making his first appearance in a podium position on lap 26.
Cale Thomas, who chased Shaffer from the runner-up position for 22 circuits, was struck with mechanical woes on the final circuit, allowing Abreu to cross under the final checkers second in the running order. Travis Philo finished third after starting from the pole position, followed by Parker Price-Miller and Dave Blaney.
“This is the best track in the country,” Rico Abreu said. “The track is better now than it has ever been. It used to be that you had to pump up your balls to come here and run the top, but now you can run all the way across the surface; top, middle, bottom. Obviously, you can come here and pass cars. I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t win this. I made a mistake in my heat race and that put us behind.”
Mother Nature attempted to wash away competition on two separate occasions on Saturday night at Eldora Speedway, once just before dash action and once again just before the start of the Classic Ink USA B-main which caused a 44-minute rain delay.
The 2017 Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket schedule will make the transition from a high-banked half-mile to a high-banked third-mile on Sunday evening, June 18, as the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions prepare to invade Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield for round three of Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Cometic Gasket.
Arguably the most exciting oval on the Ohio Sprint Speedweek campaign trail, Waynesfield Raceway Park hosted 47 entries during the 2016 visit, a field eventually defeated by Wooster, Ohio’s Sheldon Haudenschild. Haudenschild’s payday did not come easy, having to withstand constant pressure from NASCAR Cup Series star Kyle Larson and the “Steel City Outlaw” Tim Shaffer to earn the $5,000 winner’s share.
Waynesfield Raceway Park will open pit gates at 3:00pm on Sunday afternoon, June 18. Main gates will open at 5:00pm, followed by hot laps at 6:00pm and racing at 7:00pm. All Star Enterprises, LLC, wholly owned by Tony Stewart, d/b/a the All Star Circuit of Champions, is a winged sprint car series.
