NAGY CAPITALIZES ON ALLEN’S MISFORTUNE TO WIN TSRS FEATURE AT BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY
BRIDGEPORT, NJ

Kevin Nagy, of Wind Gap, PA lucked out this past Saturday night at Bridgeport Speedway when race leader Chris Allen pulled off with three laps to go, allowing him to take his first win of the season. Nagy, who started back in sixth, hustled his way up to second by lap six, and was hoping to put on a show for the fans as he was working on catching Allen before he succumbed to engine issues.
“I was happy for me of course, to be able to be in the right place at the right time,” said Nagy. “But I was sort of bummed because I was catching him, and I would have liked to passed him fair and square. I think I would have maybe got him with a lap to go, but we will take it, especially after what happened last week at New Egypt when we basically lost the win due to a last lap caution that sent us back to second”.
Allen, who held a very strong lead over the rest of the field after taking the front running position from pole sitter Stefanie Palmai, unfortunately was forced to give it away because of late race engine problems.
“I don’t know what happened,” Allen revealed in disappointment. “With four laps to go, the motor just lost power, it was almost like we dropped a cylinder. It made no noise, so it’s gotta be something simple, hopefully small. Hopefully nothing too expensive.”
With Palmai and Allen starting on the front row, the field of twenty 305 sprinters took the first green flag at the South Jersey dirt oval of 2016, and before they reached the first turn, chaos erupted mid field when three cars tangled and flipped viciously upon arrival in turn one bringing out the red flag. Tim Tanner Jr. (18), Rick Stief (9s), and David Bonner (57) were all involved in the horrific wreck, but thankfully they all walked away uninjured. Unfortunately, their cars could not say the same as they suffered significant damage.
“I went to go in on the top side, because I figured that if everyone was going to go to the bottom, it was going to be just a ‘ride around fest’, and I was following Rick (Stief) going into the corner,” explained Tanner who started mid-pack in tenth. “I don’t know whether guys checked up in front of him, but he was kind of in the middle of the track, and he quickly came up into me. I wasn’t expecting him to do that so quickly and I hopped his right rear tire and off we went”.
In a second attempt to restart the feature event, another minor caution delayed the event once more on lap two.
Palmai and Allen would battle for the lead after the green flag waved, with Allen taking over first, but not without a short lived challenge from the 99 car of Palmai. Allen would ultimately maintain control over the top spot, strengthening it as the laps counted down on the infield scoreboard. The battle for second would occur behind the leader, between front runners Mike Haggenbottom, Kevin Nagy and Stefanie Palmai, using all lanes of the race track. Nagy would school both TSRS veterans on the topside in turns one and two on lap six, and he quickly was on his way to post a challenge for the leader.
Allen, who had reached lapped traffic at the halfway point, had no problem maneuvering between the slower cars ahead and he continued to dominate the race.
“Right when we hit lapped traffic, I really got nervous, because this track is not one of my favorite places to run,” mentioned Chris. “I’ve been lucky enough to run here well, but I was just hoping that I could keep my calm and do what I needed to do in order to win. So I settled down, and was able to stay smooth because I know from experience that you have to be smooth here to be fast here”.
With three laps to go, and with lapped traffic in toe, adding extra stress to the first few drivers, Chris Allen suddenly pulled off the track and into the infield, handing over the lead and the victory to Nagy. Mike Haggenbottom and inherit the runner up position, Stefanie Palmai would finish third, Eddie Wagner, who came all the way from twelfth came in fourth and Bryant Davis rounded out the top five.
“We were suppose to go up to Lincoln Speedway tonight to run our 410, but the weather looked funky out there so we opted to stay closer to home,” Nagy commented of his changed plans. “I love running with this class because it more on our team’s budget, and I like being able to play around with this unique mid-rail car I put together last winter. Also the competition is great and it’s just a lot of fun running with these guys!”
There were two heat races won by Chris Allen and Stefanie Palmai. The Thayer Performance “Burning Rubber” hard charger award went to two drivers, Kyle Purks and Scott Frack. They both were also the recipient of the Bruce’s Auto Body hard charger bonus of $25.
Hilborn Fuel Injection, the series sponsor for the TSRS Sprint Cars, announced this week that they were going to add a cash bonus to the top three finishers who run Hilborn Fuel Injection systems. The cars must have a “Hilborn Fuel Injection” contingency sticker on their wing, as well as one of Hilborn’s injections on the motor in order to receive the bonus. First place will receive $50, second place will have an added $35 and third place driver will be given $25 for their efforts.
TSRS will have the week off next weekend, but they will return the following Saturday Night on May 14th at New Egypt Speedway. For more info on what’s happening with the fast growing sprint car series in the nation, go to our website www.tsrs1.us or log on to our Facebook page!

MILLS, ROBERTS, FREES & SAYRE PICK UP WINS IN FINAL BRIDGEPORT PRE-SEASON EVENTS

Godown, Grosso & Frees Win Pre-Season Titles

Swedesboro, NJ Sunday April 24 ....2015 Bridgeport Champion, Jamie Mills raced to his first win of the new season with a pass by Duane Howard just four laps before the checkered flag to become the fourth different winner in Spirit Auto Center Big Block Modified action this season. Brad Roberts earned his first win since 2013 in the Stewart Stainless Crate/Sportsman twenty lap main event - also the fourth different winner in this division. Ron Frees won his third race of the pre-season as he was chased to the checkered flag by TJ Henry in PennCo Tech Outlaw Stock action and Chuck Sayres earned his first win in the DA's Auto Body Rookie competition.

It was the final race of the four event pre-season that saw three drivers in each division earn a share of $1,000 in the special point fund offered by Oliver Construction Enterprises and Oliver Communication Group, Inc. With four top five finishes, the Ringos Rocket, Ryan Godown picked up the $500 check in the Big Block Modifieds for earning the most points during the four race pre-season. Mills finished second for $300 - the only driver in the top three to pick up a win during the pre-season. Rick Laubach earned $200 for his third place finish.

With one pre-season win to his credit at Bridgeport, Brandon Grosso picked up the $500 check in the Crate/Sportsman. Roberts earned $300 for his runner-up finish while Steve Davis finished third and collected $200. All three drivers had one pre-season win.

With three wins to his credit, Ron Frees earned the $500 check for the Outlaw Stocks. TJ Henry - with one win, two seconds and a third - finished second while 2014 Outlaw Champion, Jim Avery finished third.

In the Spirit Auto Center Big Block Modified action, Brett Kressley and Jeff Strunk started side by side to lead the field to the green flag with Kressley jumping out to an early lead. The early laps were interrupted by several caution flags but each time, Kressley maintained control and led the talented field of competition. By lap five, Kressley was starting to feel some pressure from Duane Howard. Howard raced the outside line to first take over second and then to challenge the leader. Kressley led through the crossed flags, pulling away from Howard by several car lengths while Jamie Mills, Ryan Watt and Dominick Buffalino trailed the leaders.

Howard got the jump on Kressley on a lap fifteen double file restart that saw Mills take over second. Howard elected the outside line on a lap eighteen restart, leaving Mills his preferred line on the inside. Howard and Mills raced side by side before Howard was able to edge ahead as the completed the next lap. But on lap twenty-one, Mills put his Blue Hen No. 30 on the inside and drove by Howard to take the lead.

Mills led the way to the checkered flag followed by Howard, Godown, Buffalino and Rick Laubach.

Justin Lilick made his first start of the 2016 season and led the Stewart Stainless Crate/Sportsman Feature for fifteen laps before Brad Roberts took the lead on lap sixteen and headed to the checkered flag at the end of twenty laps for his first win of the season. Lilick finished second while Steve Davis drove across the line in third. Brandon Grosso and opening night winner, Jeremy Harrington rounded out the top five at the finish line.

Billy Wroble led the first five laps of the PennCo Tech Outlaw Stock main event with Ron Frees racing by on the inside to complete lap number six. Frees had it all his way for the rest of the race until TJ Henry came to life late in the race. Henry raced Frees hard on the final lap with the two drivers crossing the line together. Frees took the win by about a half of car length. Wroble finished third with Spider Ensinger and Brian Ludwig picking up top five finishes.

Bob Hartman took the lead from Shannon Marshall at the start of the eight lap DA's Auto Body Rookie Feature and led the first circuit before Chuck Sayre got by on lap two to take the lead. It was all Sayre to the checkered with Tom Terry taking second from Hartman just before the checkered.

The Bridgeport Speedway switches to Saturday night racing this Saturday with the start of the 2016 Championship season. The Big Block Modifieds, Crate/Sportsman and Rookies will be joined by the TSRS Sprint Cars for a four division show that gets underway at 6pm.

The names Brett Hearn and Doug Hoffman absolutely go 'hand in hand' with each other. Arguably, two of the best modified chauffeurs to ever strap into a race car have raced thousands of times against each other throughout their illustrious careers. The 8-time Mr. DIRT champion had one of the fiercest battles in Super Dirt Car Series history back in 1996. Hearn edged Doug Hoffman for the Mr. Dirt title by a mere 3 points. Doug Hoffman won two of the battles that year by winning at Syracuse and the Bridgeport 200, however it was Brett 'The Jet' who won the war.

The Sussex, NJ driver has visited Bridgeport's victory lane twice in his Big Block career. Hearn won a season opener back in the 90's era while also capturing the USNA 200 back in 2000. Hearn's last competition at the 5/8 mile clay oval came in August of '13 during the 8th Annual Friends of Mike event. Hearn is not known to step outside of his familiar No. 20 machines, but this coming Saturday he'll be steering for one of the toughest teams in the Northeast, in the Mike Petruska-owned Atlas Paving No. 66. Ironically, it was the Atlas Team that stood in the winner's circle during the first ever '60over Special' with Bobby Varin as their driver and would like nothing short of the same results three years later.

The three-division program all goes down this Saturday, March 26 at 4pm. The Big Blocks will compete in Hand #1 of the '811 Dig Safe' Poker Series in the 44-lap $4,000 to win event. The Crate/Sportsman 20-lap race will see the victor take home a cool $1,000, while the Pennco Tech Outlaw Stocks battle it out for $500 in their 15-lap affair. An open practice will take place the night before from 7 to 10pm. Teams can leave their haulers overnight if they prefer, while the pit gates open 11am on Saturday. For all race day information please visitwww.bpspeedway.com, check out Bridgeport Speedway's official Facebook page, or call the track hotline at 856-467-4408.

MARTZ, BRITT & TANNER TOP SATURDAY NIGHT BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY ACTION
Wagner Clinches Poker Series Title

Sam Martz held off the persistent attempts of Jamie Mills in the final laps of the Spirit Auto Centers Big Block Modified Feature event to pick up his second win of the 2015 season in exciting fashion. Jim Britt was the class of the Stewart Stainless Crate/Sportsman division, picking up his fifth win of the year while Tim Tanner won his second race of the year in the final hand of the Bethman Auto Center/Bruce’s Speed Shop/Thayer Performance Poker Series for the Hilborn TriState Race Saver sprint cars.

In what was one of the closest finishes of the season, Martz fought off the late race challenges of Jamie Mills to capture the win in the twenty-five lap Big Block Modified feature event.

Ron Roberts took control at the start and led the first sixteen laps of the feature event. Martz moved into second on the first lap and trailed Roberts by several car lengths. David Hunt raced in third, followed by Mills and Bob Sarkisian at the half way mark.

Mills was on the move, picking off positions one at a time and had just passed Hunt for third spot before the caution waved on lap seventeen. The field lined up double file for the restart and Martz used the outside line to drive by Roberts to take the lead. Mills made his way to second with an inside pass by Roberts on the backstretch.

With just five laps to go, Mills chased Martz with Hunt, Watt and Roberts trailing. Tommy Beamer was closing in Roberts to challenge for a top five position. Martz ran the middle of the track and Mills made his way around on the bottom until Watt drew a caution with three to go with a flat tire.

Martz led the field to the final restart with Mills hot on his heels. There was a three way race for fifth as Richie Pratt, Jr. was on the move and racing with Roberts and Beamer for position.

Mills changed his line on lap twenty-four and moved higher on the track, racing Martz side by side down the backstretch. Mills threw everything he had at Martz and the Izzi Trucking No. 3, changing lanes again as the leaders raced to the final lap. But Martz had it covered as he beat Mills to the finish line. by less than six one hundredths of a second. Hunt finished third with Beamer and Pratt finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.

Melissa Scarpati led the first lap of the twenty lap main event for the Stewart Stainless Crate/Sportsman feature before David Crossman moved into the lead on lap two. Coming from his tenth place start, Jim Britt moved by Crossman to take the lead on lap four.

Current point leader, Pat Wall raced his way into second on lap seven but Britt had already driven to a sizeable lead. A caution just past half way, erased Britt’s advantage as Wall, Crossman, Gary Hieber, Jr. and Steve Desmelyk raced in the top five. Wall kept it close for a lap or two before Britt again pulled away from the field.

Britt took the win with Wall finishing second. Hieber followed in third with CJ Jones and Steve Davis rounding out thScoe top five.

Karl Freyer and Tim Tanner led the field of TSRS sprint cars to the start of their twenty lap main event with Freyer moving into the lead at the wave of the green. Freyer led Tanner by several lengths until the leaders caught up to lapped traffic on lap twelve. Tanner was able to close in on Freyer and chose to go to the outside to get by the slower traffic. That ended up being the winning move as Tanner went on to capture the win Freyer had one of his best outings of the season to finish second followed by Adam Carberry, Eddie Wagner and Joe Kay.

Wagner’s fourth place finish clinched the 2015 Poker Series Championship. Wagner has two wins at Bridgeport this season, one of which came during an exciting Poker Series event earlier this season.
