FREMONT, Ohio – Thirteenth starter Tim Shaffer split race long leader Chris Andrews and second place Brian Lay exiting turn two with just six laps to go and drove to his 2nd win of the season at Fremont Speedway on All Pro Aluminum Heads Night, Friday, Sept. 15. The $5,000 win makes “The Steel City Outlaw” the car to beat for Saturday’s 10th Annual Jim and Joanne Ford Classic and its $10,000 payday.
Shaffer, who now has 17 career wins at “The Track That Action Built,” has taken the victory in the Jim & Joanne Ford Classic in 2009, 2010 and 2012.
“What a great car. Jeff Rudzik and Joe Demyan (owners) and Cody Jacobs…the whole team…boy that car was awesome to drive. These guys are making it fun again. With the schedule we have we can go where we want and do what we want and it makes it fun all around. It’s crazy…I don’t know why I run so well here. I could bend it really good there (bottom of turns three and four) but getting through the middle seemed really good to me. That car would go places you wouldn’t think it could. Starting 13th tonight I didn’t think we had a shot. We just kept plugging away. My team did, I did…that Scott Gressman engine ran awesome,” said Shaffer beside his Rudzik Excavating, Triple X Chassis, VRP Shocks, FK Rod Ends, Scoville Designs backed #49.
Though the feature results weren’t what he wanted, Fremont, Ohio’s DJ Foos still locked up the 2017 All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads FAST 410 Championship Series presented by Ohio Logistics championship and its $10,000 pay check. Foos becomes the first driver in the nine year history of the FAST series to win both the 305 and 410 titles.
“The biggest thing is consistency. You can’t win them all…you just have to be there. The team travelled well. Unfortunately tonight I didn’t get the results the Jay (Kiser) and the guys deserved. These guys pour their hearts and souls into this. We’ve had speed all year and I’m so happy for these guys,” said Foos beside his Jet Express, Crown Battery, Kistler Racing Products, Kistler Engines, JLH General Contractor, NAPA of Bryan, Shelluke’s Bar and Grill backed #23.
Fremont’s Paul Weaver grabbed the lead in the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint feature with 10 laps to go and drove to his third victory of the season at Fremont Speedway. It was Weaver’s 11th overall victory of 2017 and the 44th of his career at Fremont tying him with Wayne Maffett Sr. for eighth on the track’s all-time win list. The win also earned Weaver his second straight JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Championship Series presented by Engine Pro title.
“I’m just thankful to win one race let alone all the races I’ve won over the past two years. This car is good, the engine builders Dave Rice and Bob Hampshire are great…can’t thank them enough for bailing me out when the other engine took a crap,” said Weaver of his M&L Excavating, Hampshire Racing Engines, Schiets Motorsports, Weaver Performance Center, Tender Touch Car Wash, Miller Rigging sponsored #1w.
Delta, Ohio’s Ky Harper held off 2017 track champion John Brooks to score his fifth McCullough Industries 602 Late Model win of the season. The victory is Harper’s 14th career checkered flag at the track.
“We tried some new things on the car tonight…tied some Monster Trucks (Matchbox) on tonight. That was the key and way to go…they’re probably going to ride on there for awhile. I have to thank all my sponsors and all the guys who bust their butts on this car,” said Harper of his B&R Powdercoating, H&H Environmental, Twist-T-Freez, Gibraltar Excavating, VA Risk Services, AM Transport, Track Side Truck & Trailer Repair, Childress Collision, Warpaint Graphics, Mastersbuilt Race Cars backed machine.
In the 30 lap Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint Feature Brian Lay and Chris Andrews brought the field to green with Andrews gaining the advantage over Lay, Lee Jacobs and Aaron Reutzel. As Andrews and Lay pulled away Jacobs and Reutzel battled for third with Stuart Brubaker rounding out the top five. Foos brought out the caution with three laps in with the running order Andrews, Lay, Jacobs, Reutzel, Brubaker, Craig Mintz and Byron Reed.
On the restart Jacobs dove to Lay’s inside and took second on lap five as Lay had his hands full with Reutzel with Brubaker and 10th starter Cole Duncan closing. Action ground to a halt on lap 8 when Trevor Baker flipped; he was uninjured. On the restart Andrews pulled away as Lay slipped around Jacobs for the runner-up spot. All eyes were on Shaffer who had worked his way up to sixth. Reutzel drove into third on lap 11 and closed on Lay just as the caution flew for a Jody Keegan spin with 18 laps to go.
A Broc Martin came to rest to bring out the caution with 14 laps scored and on the restart Foos spun again, ending his night. Andrews again got a great restart over Lay with Reutzel and Jacobs battling for third with Shaffer up to fifth. Shaffer moved into fourth on lap 16 as Andrews held a two car length advantage over the entertaining battle for second involving Lay and Reutzel. As Andrews prepared to enter heavy lapped traffic with nine circuits remaining, Shaffer took third from Reutzel with Lay closing in on the leader.
Shaffer made his winning move exiting turn two on lap 24, splitting both Andrews and Lay and driving under a lapped car on the back stretch. Shaffer drove to the checkers over Andrews, a resurgent Jacobs, Lay and Duncan.
The start of the 25 lap 305 sprint feature was marred by a tangle involving Justin Adams and Bobby Clark initially, and then on the second attempt Jamie Miller spun and Dustin Rall flipped at the opposite end of the track. When the green flew for a third time Kelsey Ivy jumped into the lead from her front row starting spot over Nate Dussel, Ricky Peterson, Seth Schneider and Tyler Street.
Dussel took the lead on lap two but Ivy stayed glued to his rear bumper when the caution flew on lap four for an Alvin Roepke and Cody Bova mishap. In just four laps Weaver had moved from 14th to seventh. The race would go caution free the remaining 21 laps.
With eight laps scored Kelsey Ivy began to pressure Dussel to regain the lead with Weaver closing in third. By lap 11 it was a tremendous three car battle for the lead with Ivy retaking the top spot as Weaver drove into second a lap later. Weaver executed a slider on Ivy for the lead on lap 15 with Dussel following into second a lap later as the leaders caught the back of the field. Meanwhile, Kelsey’s dad, John Ivy, had drive into fifth from his 18th starting position.
Weaver began to pull away slightly over Dussel, Kelsey Ivy, John Ivy and Seth Schneider with five laps to go. Weaver went unchallenged the rest of the way for the win over Dussel, John Ivy, Schneider and Kelsey Ivy.
In the 15 lap late model feature, Ky Harper grabbed the lead from the drop of the green but 2017 Fremont Speedway champion John Brooks stayed glued to his rear bumper. A caution on lap nine bunched up the field, but Harper continued to hold off Brooks as Chester Fitch closed to challenge. With two laps to go Brooks made a couple of moves to the inside of Harper but couldn’t get the pass completed.
Harper took the checkers over Chester Fitch, Brooks, Skeeter Fitch and Kyle Dukeshire.
Fremont Speedway gets back to action Saturday, Sept. 16 for the $10,000-to-win Jim and Joanne Ford Classic with the Ohio Sprint Car Series again challenging the local competitors and the invaders on JLH General Contractor Night. JLH has a lot of contingency money on the line throughout the night and once again thanks to DKW Transport the night’s fast qualifier will earn $500; second quick $300; and third quick $150. Upping the fast time award to $700 are fans Lane Cecil and Steve Klisz.
Friday Jon Horn, owner of JLH General Contractor, announced he would return as the title sponsor of the JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Championship Series in 2018.

Foos earns 2nd Fremont 410 win; Reed claims 7th track title

FREMONT, Ohio – DJ Foos sliced his way through lapped traffic like a surgeon to claim his second 410 sprint win of the season at Fremont Speedway Saturday, Sept. 9 on Kistler Racing Products Night. It was the second win of the season at “The Track That Action Built” for the Fremont, Ohio native.
“Wow, to go through what we have gone through the past month and then come out here and get a win says a lot about this team. I had to make some moves in lapped traffic that were close. I ran the bottom to see what was done there and when Lee (Jacobs) opened the top in three and four…it was just too good up there for me not to take it,” said Foos beside his Jet Express, Crown Battery, Kistler Racing Products, Kistler Engines, JLH General Contractor, NAPA of Bryan; Shelluke’s Bar & Grill backed machine.
Monclova, Ohio’s Byron Reed came into the season championship night third in points, but a good qualifying effort, a heat race win and a fourth place feature finish propelled him to his 7th Fremont Speedway track championship.
“I usually don’t pay too much attention to heat races other than to make sure I make the transfer. Then I started doing the math and was like ‘I got a chance at this.’ I want to thank Fremont based Crown Battery for all they do for us and the great fans at Fremont Speedway,” Reed said.
The Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint feature was worth the price of the ticket as Bobby Clark, Paul Weaver and Nate Dussel battled each other and lapped traffic the last five laps. A caution with three laps to go gave Clark a clear track and the Fremont, Ohio driver scored his first win of the season and the 35th of his career at Fremont Speedway. It comes after Clark took a nasty spill last weekend at Waynesfield Raceway Park. Clark now sits 12th on the track’s all-time win list.
“I’m down to one car so I’m glad I got to start closer to the front tonight…I could be more careful that way. It’s been a terrible year; we’ve struggled all year. About the last month or so we figured some things out and the car’s been really good when I’m not crashing. I was glad to see that caution because I was having fits in lapped traffic. Every where I went they went to the same spot. I saw Paul (Weaver) the one time…I was comfortable with three to go but I was still waiting for the slide job,” said Clark beside his Fremont Fence, Kear’s Speed Shop, B&L Plumbing, Shelluke’s Bar, Nagy’s Equipment, Miller Rigging, Bit D’s Pizza, Schiet’s Motorsports, Willey’s Towing backed machine.
Dussel’s third place finish earned him a second consecutive track championship.
“I really didn’t come out here to point race…I kind of felt like we got that out of the way last year. We really wanted to win. This definitely helps considering we won two races this whole year and I feel like we’re a much better team than that. I didn’t want to see that last caution. Right before that I bounced it off the back stretch wall and I think I either bent the ladder or bent the right rear wheel and all of a sudden I could get rolling the bottom better,” said Dussel.
Wayne, Ohio’s John Brooks led flag to flag for his third win of the year in the McCullough Industries 602 Late Models. Brooks’ eighth career win at the track also garnered him his second straight track title.
“It took a little bit this year getting this car figured out. We had it working pretty good but made some changes today and put it on the scales and the scales broke. We didn’t know what we had. Then we loaded it in the trailer and the right front shock was broke too. It was a hell of a day but it worked out. Chris adjusted on it…it wasn’t worth a crap in hot laps. But he got it working good later,” said Brooks beside his Snack Time Vending, Foster Auto Repair backed #00.
Fostoria, Ohio’s Shawn Valenti continued his domination in the Burmeister Trophy Dirt Trucks, recording his seventh feature win of the year. It marks is 39th career victory at Fremont Speedway, moving him to 11th on the track’s all-time win list.
“The guys give me a phenomenal truck once again. We had some issues and didn’t get to hot lap but the Jeff Babcock got it all figured out and here we are again. What a season,” said Valenti beside his A Plus Auto Center; Best Performance; Craig Miller Trucking; Dave Story Equipment; Real Geese backed #7B.
Fremont, Ohio’s Dustin Keegan drove to a third place finish to earn his first ever Fremont Speedway dirt truck track title.
“My dad and all the crew have given me a great truck all season. This is unbelievable…I used to sit in those stands and hope I’d get to race here one day and now to win a track championship…this is fantastic,” said an emotional Keegan.
Lee Jacobs and Foos led the field to green for the 30 lap Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint A-main with Jacobs gaining the advantage over Foos, Bryan Broughton, Travis Philo, Chris Andrews, Valenti and Reed. Foos took several looks to Jacob’s inside over the first hand full of laps with Philo driving into third on lap six. The leaders caught the back of the field on lap eight with Jacobs maintaining the lead over Foos, Philo, Andrews, Broughton, Reed, Broc Martin and Valenti.
Foos and Jacobs switched lines in turns three and four on lap 14 and Foos powered into the lead as they raced into very heavy lapped traffic. A caution at the half way point gave Jacobs a shot at regaining the lead but Foos was too strong on the restart. Andrews took third n lap 17 and started to close on Foos and Jacobs while Philo and Reed battled for fourth. With eight laps remaining Foos raced into very heavy lapped traffic and Jacobs and Andrews closed.
Jacobs took several looks to Foos’ inside while the leader was hung up behind a lapped car. Foos made some daring moves in traffic the last hand full of laps and drove to the win over Jacobs, Andres, Reed and Philo
Matt Foos and Jimmy McGrath paced the field for the 25 lap 305 sprint A-main with Foos jumping into the lead at the drop of the green. Following a caution after a lap was scored, Foos again maintained the lead as Tyler Street jumped into second over McGrath, Clark, Joe Armbruster and 12th starting Weaver. Clark moved into third on lap three with Weaver taking fourth a circuit later. Street spun while running second on lap seven.
Clark powered under Foos for the lead on lap nine as Weaver applied pressure for the runner-up spot finally taking it on lap 14. Weaver methodically cut into Clark’s lead and as they raced into heavy lapped traffic with seven laps to go, took several looks to Clark’s outside for the lead. Weaver made a big bobble on the cushion in turns three and four with four laps to go, as Dussel dove to his inside with Clark in both of their sights. But, a caution with three laps to go gave Clark a clear track and he was able to drive to the win over Weaver, Dussel, John Ivy and Jamie Miller.
Brooks and Keegan brought the field to green for the McCullough Industries 602 Late Model A-main with Brooks jumping into the lead. Ky Harper took second on lap two and pressured Brooks. Several cautions in the opening five laps kept the field close but when the green flew with 10 laps to go, Brooks had his hands full with Harper and Chester Fitch. While battling for second on lap eight, Harper and Fitch made heavy contact, ending Fitch’s night.
Brooks hit his marks perfectly with the remaining six laps and drove to the win over Harper, Keegan, Brad Mitten and Skeeter Fitch.
Mitten and Brad Stuckey led the field to green for the 20 lap dirt truck feature with Mitten gaining the upper hand. Stuckey led laps two and three by a front bumper with Valenti taking the top spot on lap four just before a multi-truck crash. The race would go the rest of the way caution free.
Valenti drove away from the field while the battle for second heated up involving Stuckey, Kent Brewer, Keith Sorg and Daniel Roepke. With eight laps in Valenti’s lead was about eight truck lengths with Roepke now second followed closely by Brewer, Stuckey, Keegan, Sorg and Jeff Ward. Valenti took the checkers nearly eight truck lengths ahead of Roepke, Brewer, Keegan and Ward.

FREMONT, Ohio – There’s no place like home for Cap Henry. The Bellevue, Ohio native spent a lot of years on the road racing sprint cars, including several weeks in the Midwest this year. He returned home a couple of weeks ago and hooked up with the Lane Racing team and it paid off Saturday at Fremont Speedway. Henry took the lead on lap 17 and drove to his fourth career win at “The Track That Action Built” pocketing $5,000 thanks to Crown Battery.
Henry started 10th in the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint feature and steadily worked his way to the front. A tremendous battle involving Stuart Brubaker, Chris Andrews and Henry ensued as the leaders raced into heavy lapped traffic by lap 11. Henry drove around Brubaker for the lead exiting turn two to lead lap 17. It wasn’t easy for Henry as he encountered heavy lapped traffic with eight laps to go allowing Brubaker to close. Henry navigated through the traffic to earn the win.
“I can’t say enough about this Lane family. They didn’t know who I was two weeks ago. Man I knew this thing was pretty good early. I caught those guys in traffic and just didn’t want to screw it up. Hats off to Rich (Farmer, Fremont Speedway Promoter) and the whole crew. The track was awesome. I could run any where on the race track. This J&J was awesome. It’s good to be in victory lane and even better to be home,” said Henry beside his Metropolitan Landscaping, Kistler Engines backed #4.
Gibsonburg’s Nate Dussel survived a close call with a lapped car and led all 25 laps to claim his second feature win in as many weeks at Fremont Speedway. Last week he scored his first ever 360ci sprint win and this week the track’s Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint 2016 champion scored his first win in that division, taking home $1,000 thanks to Crown Battery.
“Considering how bad I fouled it up last week in this car, stepping on it running second, I owed this to my dad and everyone on this team to get the #1 car back in victory lane,” said Dussel beside his Berrier Custom Fabrication; Al Davis Carpet; Industrial Movers; Gressman Powersports; Box 7; Real Geese; Wurtec; Design Graphics Group; Kistler Racing Products backed machine.
The victory is Dussel’s 23rd overall at the track, putting him in a tie with Bryan Sebetto and Jim Fleming for 23rd on the all time win list.
“I’ve said it before I sat in those stands as a little kid thinking maybe some day I can sit on this front stretch at least once let alone 23 times,” Dussel commented.
Wayne, Ohio’s John Brooks has racked up 5 runner-up finishes in the McCullough Industries 602 Late Models at Fremont Speedway in 2017. Brooks, the track’s defending division champion, finally broke into victory lane Saturday, taking the lead on lap six and driving to his sixth career win
“The track was smoother and it didn’t wear me out…I didn’t fall out of the seat,” said Brooks beside his Snack Time Vending; Foster Auto Repair; Brian Foster backed #00.
“Chester (Fitch) and Ky (Harper) give me a run for my money every week. It seems if I can beat one I can’t beat the other. This feels good…I was wondering where this place was,” Brooks said referring to the Engine Pro Victory Lane. “I want to thank my wife, Chris my crew chief, a friend of mine, Jim, came out to help us.”
A few years ago Fremont, Ohio’s Brad Mitten suffered a severe head injury. Through hard work and determination he came back to racing and it all paid off Saturday as he grabbed the lead from Shawn Valenti – who has five wins on the season – on a restart with just four laps to go and drove to his first career Burmeister Trophy Dirt Truck feature win at “The Track That Action Built.”
“I was faster in one and two than he (Valenti) was but he would come back on me in three and four. I thought he was going to come back around but I stuck with it and after 12 years I finally won,” said Mitten beside his Centec Cast Metal Products; Premier Planning Services; Borer Mirror & Glass; Shellukes Bar and Grill; SPS Distributing; B&R Powder Coasting backed #23m.
Jody Keegan and Todd Heller brought the 410 feature to green with Heller gaining the advantage over Chris Andrews, Keegan, Brubaker, Broc Martin and D.J. Foos. Keegan, who took home $1,000 for winning the Alex Burkett Memorial Pursuit earlier in the night, jumped back into second on lap two and immediately challenged Heller for the lead. Heller and Keegan would tangle on lap three, handing the lead to Brubaker.
Brubaker pulled away slightly on the restart from Andrews, Henry, Foos, Trey Jacobs, Valenti, Byron Reed and Tyler Gunn. The leaders raced into heavy lapped traffic by the 11th circuit and it was a three car battle for the lead involving Brubaker, Andrews and Henry. Henry sliced into second on lap 12 and battled with Brubaker and the lapped cars over the next five laps before driving under Brubaker exiting turn four on lap 17.
Henry pulled away from Brubaker, Andrews, Reed, Jacobs, Foos and Gunn until encountering more heavy traffic with eight laps remaining. Brubaker quickly closed and with three laps remaining was right on Henry’s rear bumper. Henry was able to negotiate through the traffic and drove to the win over Brubaker, Andrews, Reed and Jacobs.
Last week’s winner Steve Rando and Dussel paced the field for the 25 lap 305 sprint feature with Dussel gaining the advantage at the drop of the green. Paul Weaver moved into second on lap two and the battle began for the lead. Dussel and Weaver nose to tail over the next five laps before the caution flew just as they were racing into lapped traffic. After two green flag laps Rando’s run at the front came to an end with mechanical issues. On the restart Dussel led Weaver, Bobby Clark, Alvin Roepke, Matt Foos and John Ivy (from 17th).
Clark would spin on lap 10, collecting Ivy. When the green flew the battle between Dussel and Weaver continued with Roepke, Foos, Brandon Moore, and Jamie Miller giving chase. With 10 laps to go Dussel and Weaver were battling as they caught the rear of the field. Kevin Mingus would spin right in front of them. Dussel avoided the incident but Weaver spun to avoid heavy contact, sending him to the tail.
When the green flew Dussel pulled away from Roepke, Moore, Kyle Capodice, Foos and Dustin Stroup. As he worked his way back to the front, Weaver clipped Chase Dunham on lap 18 with Dunham laying his car on its side. Again when the green returned Dussel pulled away from Roepke with Moore and Foos battling for third. Dussel easily drove to the win over Roepke, Moore, Foos and Weaver.
In the 15 lap late model feature, Dustin Keegan and Ky Harper brought the field to green with Harper taking the lead over Brooks, Chester Fitch, Keegan and Kyle Dukeshire. Fitch spun while challenging for the lead on lap four. On the restart Brooks pressured Harper and drove into the lead on lap six just before the caution would fly. A pair of cautions over the next two laps kept the field close.
Once the green flew again on lap eight, Brooks began to pull away from Harper, Fitch and Keegan. Brooks drove to the win over Harper, Fitch, Keegan and Jay King.
The 20 lap dirt truck feature went green with Eric Devanna and Brad Stuckey on the front row. Cautions marred the first seven laps of the feature, thought he battle up front involving Devanna, Stuckey, Shawn Valenti and Dustin Keegan was quite entertaining. Valenti grabbed the lead on lap seven and began to pull away as Keegan, Devanna and Stuckey put on a show for second.
Mitten was finally able to take the runner-up position on lap 14 just before the caution flew wiping out Valenti’s big lead. When the green reappeared Mitten drove under Valenti to take the lead. Mitten hit his marks perfectly and drove to the win over Valenti, Keegan, Keith Sorg and Devanna.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, July 22 on Miller Rigging/Mac & Bob’s Service Garage Night with the 410 and 305 sprints, trucks and late models in action on Family Fun Night.

All Star Circuit of Champions driver holds off series regulars to win Kistler Engines Smackdown
FREMONT, Ohio - June 3, 2016 - With family and friends cheering him on, Chad Kemenah, became just the third non-World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series driver to defeat the series regulars after he held off seven-time series champion Donny Scahtz to win the Kistler Engines Smackdown at Fremont (Ohio) Speedway on Friday night.
Kemenah, an Elvada, Ohio -native who had not made a World of Outlaws feature at Fremont since 1993, motored around David Gravel just after the halfway point in the 40-lap feature race, then held off a hard-charging Schatz in the final laps to capture the checkered flag.
"That was a hell of a show for the fans," Kemenah said after exiting his car. "I don't know how close it was there at the end, but I am pretty sure the fans were in the cockpit there with me. We were the first ones to the checkered flag tonight, and my wife and kids were here to watch it, so this is cool.
"I just can't thank my whole team enough, they have worked their tails off this year. I have great car owners in Rod and Rita Hunter, and unfortunately Rob wasn't here to watch this one since he has never won an Outlaw's show before."
Schatz, the 2013 and 2014 winner of this race, started fifth and charged his way to a runner-up finish, his best finish since winning at Weedsport Speedway over a week ago.
"40 laps here was enough - Chad just did a good job," Schatz said. "It's a work in progress, and every day is a new day to work on it. Tony Stewart's got the best guys in the business to do that, so we will just keep plugging away.
"All you can do is your best every night. We had a pretty solid night, obviously we wanted to win, but we just got beat. So some nights you just have to lick your wounds and learn from it."
Shane Stewart kicked-off the night by capturing his third consecutive quick-time award when he clocked the fastest time in flight one of qualifying at 12.734 seconds. Flight two was led by local driver, Rob Chaney at 13.141 seconds.
Qualifying set up the night-long war between the Outlaws and Ohio drivers, as the series regulars drew first blood by dominating three of the four heat races. Stewart, Joey Saldana and Gravel each won their heat race, while Kemenah was the lone Ohioan to upset the Outlaws when he won the final heat.
The Outlaws continued their early-night ownership of victory lane as Gravel, in the Big Game Treestands/JRC No. 5, outdueled Kemenah to win the six-lap dash, which placed the Watertown, Conn. driver on the pole for the feature.
When the feature started, the opening laps established a precedent for the remainder of the night as drivers battled a challenging, slick track, which created cautions early and often.
Gravel, who was glued to the bottom of the track, held on to the lead through a handful of early cautions as second place starter, Kemenah, in the Brillex LLC/Seneca Energy No. 10H, challenged the leader but could never complete the pass.
While Gravel and Kemenah jockeyed over the top position, Schatz lurked in his Bad Boy/Chevrolet Performance No. 15 just behind them in the third position.
Kemenah finally built up enough of a run on the outside of Gravel to capture the lead on lap 23, but the Ohioan's path to victory was not an easy one in the final 18 laps.
Kemenah began to approach lapped traffic, as the race began a final green-flag run. Once Kemenah hit the slower traffic, Schatz started to close in on the leader. The Fargo, N.D. -native made his way around Gravel, who slipped to third, and placed the Kemenah in his crosshairs.
A regular of the All Star Circuit of Champions, which is owned by Tony Stewart, Kemenah had to hold off Scahtz, who drives for Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing over the final laps, as the reigning series champion eyed his third win at the track in four years.
Schatz closed to Kemenah's back bumper but could never get close enough to make a move, as the Ohioan controlled the top spot over the final 18 laps to become just the third non-Outlaw driver to capture the checkered flag in a series race.
"I am just speechless right now - I have to thank everyone that's here," Kemenah added. "If you're a member of this team or have been a part of it, you should be really, really proud because this is a hell of a race team.
"We've been pretty good, but last week we had a driver that didn't feel like qualifying good, which turned into a terrible weekend. I can't thank David [Gravel] and Donny [Schatz] enough, they raced here like true professionals - they're the best in the business."
Schatz, who admittedly isn't watching the point's battle just yet, has cut Brad Sweet's point lead to just 11 after Sweet struggled to a 15th-place finish.
"You guys look at the points - I don't care, I am just about winning races," Schatz said. "That's how I have won what I have won, so I am just going to do that.
"We need to get back to winning races, that's for sure. We're going to go back and figure out what we could've done to be better. We have another race tomorrow so we have another shot at it."
Gravel, who led the most laps tonight, slipped to third in the second half of the race, but still picked up his second podium finish in-a-row.
"I have never got a win here, and I really wanted one tonight," Gravel said. "We probably had the best car the first half of the race but I just faded there late. I had the wing back all the way and that was all I had there, so we will settle for a third.
"You never want to back up in the feature, but people like Donny Schatz and Chad Kemenah beat you on a very slick race track, and they're some of the best on the slick tracks. We have a little bit of work to do, but we have been trying stuff and this is something new for us that we are getting better at every week. We've been running really well, we just have to keep it up and the wins will come."
2016 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year contender Greg Wilson, who is a Benton Ridge, Ohio -native, rebounded from a missed feature at Lawrenceburg Speedway on Monday to finish fourth tonight, which is his third top-five finish of the season.

Swanson caps off great week with Fremont BOSS win

FREMONT, Ohio – What a week for Kingsburg, California’s Kody Swanson. It started Thursday with a win in the Hoosier Hundred champ car race, continued Friday with a second place run behind his brother at the Carb Night Classic in a sprint car on the pavement in Brownsburg, Indiana. Saturday Kody would win the Little 500 on the pavement in Anderson, Indiana in a sprint car and ended the week with a victory Sunday on Fremont Speedway’s clay oval in a sprint car for the Mike Hensel Memorial Presented by Budweiser and Maple City Ice.
Sunday’s $5,000 victory at Fremont was Swanson’s second Mike Hensel Memorial victory.
Sunday at Fremont, Swanson would take the lead from Shane Cottle on lap 16 and drove away for his second career Rick’s Truck & Equipment Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series (BOSS) win.
“What an unbelievable week. It’s hard to put into words. The Hensel family…I won this race two years ago and met them, what an awesome group of people. You see them throughout race tracks wherever we’re at…crown races, saw them at the Hoosier 100 and the Little 500…what great people to have in the sport,” said Swanson. “I’m so thankful to be a part of this event to honor Mike.
“I’m not that good at all. I’m so lucky to be driving this week for three fantastic race teams, the DePalma 63, the Hoffman 69 and tonight Kent Wolters 21…what an unbelievable group of guys. My career was in shambles and probably over and Kent picked me up and gave me another chance and I’m happy to put this in victory lane for him,” added Swanson.
Fremont’s Paul Weaver would dominate the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint feature for his second win in as many nights at Fremont. Both wins were worth $1,000 each for Weaver who not has 38 career victories at Fremont Speedway.
Weaver’s win Sunday also garnered him valuable points in the chase for the JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Sprint Series presented by Engine Pro title.
“That was a lot easier than last night…I don’t know why,” said Weaver beside his Schiets Motorsports, Weaver Performance Center, M&L Excavating, Hampshire Engines backed #1w.
In a race cut short by just six laps due to curfew constraints, Tiffin’s Chester Fitch would garner his second win of the hear in the McCullough Industries 602 Late Models. Fitch led every lap for his fifth career Fremont victory.
“The car felt good and felt like it was finally ready to run and be a race car,” said Fitch beside his Tiffin Auto Auction, Westside Auto Sales, Hi-Way 101 Auto Parts, Danner’s Recycling backed #101.
Shane Cottle and Swanson would bring the field to green for the 33-lap Mike Hensel Memorial. Robert Ballou would spin necessitating another start. Cottle would grab the early lead over Swanson, DJ Foos (making only his third non-wing sprint start), Brady Bacon, Cooper Clouse, Thomas Meseraull and Dave Darland.
On lap 3 Dustin Stroup and Paul Dues would get together to halt the action. On the restart Sodeman and Dues would spin. When the green reappeared Cottle and Swanson pulled away slightly as Bacon moved into third with Foos, Meseraull, Clouse and Darland battling for fourth. Meseraull would take fourth on lap eight.
The big cushion in turn four kept the field close and often jumbled the running order from third on back.
On lap 11 the red would appear when Mike Burkin spun sending Tyler Gunn hard into the soft wall in turn three. He was okay but done for the night. Prior to the red Bacon hit the curb in turn four hard and dropped several positions. The restart order was Cottle, Swanson, Foos, Darland, Meseraull, Clouse and Bacon.
After following Cottle for the first 15 laps, Swanson made his move to the lead on lap 16 just before the caution would fly for Clouse who won the BOSS event a few weeks ago at Fremont.
On lap 19, Foos and Meseraull would tangle while battling for third, with Foos spinning. That would necessitate a fuel stoppage. The race would go the last 14 laps non-stop.
On the restart Swanson began pulling away from Cottle. The car on the move was Ballou who stormed from the rear of the field following his opening lap spin to fourth by lap 20. By lap 24 Swanson had built a sizeable lead while Cottle battled with Meseraull, Ballou and Bacon.
With seven laps remaining Swanson’s lead was over three seconds with Cottle, Meseraull and Ballou waging a very entertaining battle for second. Meseraull would grab second on lap 28 but Swanson held a commanding lead.
Swanson would drive to the checkers over Meseraull, Cottle, Ballou and Landon Simon.
In the 25 lap 305 sprint feature Dustin Dinan and Ricky Peterson would bring the field to green. Dustin Stroup would bring out the caution before a lap could be completed. Once the green flew again the race would go non-stop.
Peterson would grab the early lead over Weaver, Dinan, Jamie Miller, Steve Rando, Luke Griffith and Jason Keckler. Weaver would drive to Peterson’s outside to take the lead on lap three.
Despite encountering heavy lapped traffic by the eighth circuit, no one could catch Weaver as Peterson tried to fend off Miller and Rando. With 10 laps to go Weaver’s lead was five seconds over Miller with Peterson, Rando, Keckler, Dinan, Nate Dussel and Bobby Clark in pursuit.
By lap 20, Weaver had built a seven second lead with Rando and Miller trading the second and third spot over the next few laps.
Weaver drove away to the win over Rando, Miller, Peterson and Keckler.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Friday, June 3 as the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series invades. The 305 sprints will all run feature events – odds in the point standings and evens in the point standings.

Broc Martin dominates for Fremont Speedway win

FREMONT, Ohio – Wooster, Ohio’s Broc Martin watched a huge lead wiped out late in the 410 sprint feature at Fremont Speedway. But, he got a tremendous restart, hit his marks and went on to dominate for his second career win on Root’s Poultry Night.
Martin had built a 3.2 second lead late in the 30-lap feature for the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints. But a red flag with seven laps to go put Cole Duncan – who had been chipping away at the lead by .2 seconds every lap – right on Martin’s rear bumper. Martin focused and drove away for the victory, leading all 30 laps.
“I have to thank a real special friend of ours. Health wise he’s had some issues here lately and that’s Jim Smith Enterprises…Smitty…he’s been a huge influence on my career and my life in general. I have to thank Guerne Heights Drive In, a great please to eat if you’re down in the Wooster area. I have to thank Orrville Trucking and Grading, Santmyer Oil, Keizer Wheels, my friends Rick and Barb…Mt. Dew Rick, he helps a ton. I have to thank my buddies Wayne and Matt and my parents. My mom retired and got a second job just so we can do this. My dad works 55 hours a week,” Martin said in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.
“I want to thank all the fans and folks at Fremont Speedway. I drive past a track 20 minutes from my home to come up here because I run with some of the best drivers in the country at one of the best facilities in the country. Everyone here has treated me like a member of the family,” Martin concluded.
The Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint Feature couldn’t get more exciting. Dundee, Michigan’s Dan McCarron held off 15th place starter Nate Dussel to earn his first career Fremont victory. It was by the narrowest of margins - .01 seconds.
“I have a lot of people to thank, mainly my wife Kate who helps me out on this car night in and night out…every night. My dad and my sister are usually here. Blake Smith is just awesome help. We’ve really struggled but tonight I think we hit the balance. I don’t know what we did but Blake’s not changing it,” said McCarron beside his McCarron Sales and Promotions, All Star Performance, XYZ Machining, Timken, Rod End Supply, Engler Machine & Tool backed #22M.
Delta, Ohio’s Ky Harper would dominate the McCullough Industries 602 Late Model feature, though he had a close call late in the race with a couple of lapped cars. He would dig his way through for his second win of the season and the seventh of his career.
“I wasn’t breathing there when I almost tangled with those lapped cars. This car isn’t anything like the car we had last year. We’ve had to do a ton of work on it. We’re getting it closer. That’s two victories in last two outings,” said Harper beside his Handy Grafix, Cut Right Lawn Care, Jed’s Twist T-Freez, Rocket Chassis, Childress Collision, Classic Industries backed #34.
Fostoria, Ohio’s Shawn Valenti would battle with Cory McCaughey throughout the 15 laps of the Burmeister Trophies Dirt Truck feature before driving to his second win of the season. It is Valenti’s 27th career win at Fremont and moves him into 16th on the track’s all-time win list.
“When I was a little kid sitting up there in the stands just hoping one day I could be standing out here on the front stretch let alone collect 27 of them…it’s pretty amazing,” said Valenti who was involved in a multi-car crash in the 410 sprint feature earlier.
“I have to thank Jeff Babcock for putting me in this thing. I have to thank Craig Miller Trucking, Gressman Powersports, JP Enterprise, KS Sales and Service, Real Geese Decoys…it feels good to be back up here,” added Valenti.
The start of the 30 lap 410 sprint feature got off to a horrendous start as seven cars were involved in a vicious crash on the back stretch. It would eliminate the cars of Dean Jacobs, Valenti, Caleb Griffith, Duane Zablocki and Stuart Williams with Cale Thomas and Jody Keegan making repairs to rejoin the field. On the second attempt at green Ben Rutan would spin.
On the third attempt Martin battled with Trey Jacobs with Duncan, Stuart Brubaker, Brian Lay and Travis Philo in tow. Martin began to build up a sizeable lead over Jacobs and Duncan with Lay moving into fourth on lap four.
Martin caught the back of the field with just seven laps scored but his lead grew over Jacobs and Duncan with a great battle shaping up for fourth with Lay, Brubaker and Philo. By the half-way point Martin’s lead was over three seconds as Jacobs and Duncan battled for second followed by Lay, Philo, Brubaker, Jack Sodeman, Jordan Ryan and Tyler Gunn.
Duncan would take second on lap 18 but Martin had built a four second lead. Duncan was closing lap after lap when, on lap 23, Gunn made contact with the front stretch wall, flipping hard. He would emerge okay.
Martin got a tremendous restart and began rebuilding his lead. Duncan and Jacobs would battle again for second with Lay, Philo, Brubaker and Ryan in tow. With just three laps remaining Martin had built his lead back to over two seconds as he would drive to the win.
Duncan, Jacobs, Lay and Brubaker would round out the top five.
“You (pointing to announcer Brian Liskai) were freaking me out…I could hear you saying he was chopping of two tenths of a second. I know Cole, he’s a heck of a racer, and last year when I won I had to do almost the same thing except Byron (Reed) had to come all the way from fifth to second. I knew Cole was definitely going to be a challenge. I knew as long as I could hit my marks…and to be honest with you probably with about five laps to go I messed up in three and four but in one and two I was nailing it. It’s tough when you’re leading like that because you don’t know which lane to chose but I guess it worked,” Martin said.
McCarron and Steve Rando brought the field to green in the 25-lap 305 sprint feature with McCarron gaining the advantage. Alvin Roepke and Brian Gibbs would tangle after a lap was scored necessitating a single-file restart. McCarron would rocket back into the lead while Bobby Clark would slip past Rando for second with Luke Griffith ready to pounce in fourth.
Griffith would move into third on lap four but would spin with five laps scored. The restart order was McCarron, Clark, Rando, Jamie Miller and Dustin Stroup, Ricky Peterson, Paul Weaver and Nate Dussel.
Once again McCarron would pull away from Clark with Rando and Miller in tow. A great battle was underway for fifth involving Stroup, Weaver and Dussel. Griffith would bring out another caution with 10 laps scored. When the green flew so did McCarron over Clark, Rando, Miller, Weaver, Dussel and Stroup.
As McCarron pulled away slightly, Clark and Rando would battle for second. A quick caution for a Dustin Rall spin on lap 14 was the only thing keeping the rest of the field close to McCarron who had driven a flawless race to that point.
On the restart McCarron hit his marks as Rando drove around Clark for second with Dussel up to fourth followed by Miller, Weaver, and Roepke from the back of the field. The final caution flew on lap 19 for Gibbs.
McCarron now had his hands full when the green flew as Dussel drove from fourth to second with Rando challenging as well. With four laps to go McCarron, Dussel and Rando were neck-and-neck for the lead with Weaver, Clark and Roepke battling in their tire tracks. Two laps from the end Dussel was racing right on McCarron’s rear bumper.
As they took the white flag, McCarron dove to the bottom to block Dussel’s advance. As they raced into the final two turns McCarron slipped off the bottom just enough to give Dussel a shot. The duo had a drag race to the checkers with McCarron winning by less than a bumper.
Dussel, Rando, Weaver, and Clark would round out the top five.
“Before the last restart (with six laps to go) my crew guy Blake told me to keep it wound up into three. I thought if I could just carry enough momentum and then even if I had to slide I’d be alright. Luckily I was. Nate is a heck of a driver and has won a ton of races here. He didn’t run me up and I appreciate that,” McCarron said.
Harper and Chester Fitch brought the field to green for the 15-lap late model feature but before a lap could be completed Jamie Miller would spin. On the ensuing restart Harper would battle with Fitch before wrestling the top spot with Brandon Perkins, Steve Sabo and Matt Shipley in tow.
The race would go caution-free the rest of the way. Harper would build a sizeable lead over Fitch with Sabo taking third on lap two, bringing Shipley to fourth. Shipley would drive into third on lap five.
The only thing that would slow Harper was two lapped cars with three laps to go as he nearly made contact. Harper was able to negotiate through the traffic and drove to the win over Fitch, Shipley, Steve Sabo and John Brooks.
Jim Holcomb and Cory McCaughey brought the field to green for the 15 lap dirt truck feature. It was immediately a seven truck battle for the lead with McCaughey holding the slight advantage over Holcomb and Dana Fry. Eighth starter Valenti would drive into fourth on lap two and around Fry into second a lap later.
Valenti took the lead using the high line on lap five with McCaughey continuing to battle to his inside. Frey, Kent Brewer and Brandon Leighton remained within striking distance. The event’s only caution flew on lap six for a Brad Stuckey spin.
When the green flew the battle between Valenti and McCaughey resumed with Frey racing with Brewer for third while Leighton and Dustin Keegan waged war for fifth. With five laps to go Brewer now challenged Frey for third as Valenti moved to the low groove to try and block McCaughey’s advance.
McCaughey gave Valenti all he could handle but when the checkers flew Valenti took the win. Brewer would come in third followed by Frey and Jeff Ward.
Fremont Speedway will host a double-header weekend Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29. On Saturday the Kistler Racing Products FAST Championship Series Presented by KS Sales and Service will compete in the richest purse in the organization’s eight year history with the winner of the 410 feature taking home $5,000. The 305 sprints will battle for $1,000 to win with the dirt trucks also in action. Sunday will see the second appearance of the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series (BOSS) non-wing sprint cars battling for $5,000 to win for the 2nd Annual Mike Hensel Memorial. Once again the 305 sprints will compete for $1,000 to win with the late models also in action.
