SEAVEY SNOOKERS RICO LATE AT JACKSONVILLE, TIES RECORD WITH 11TH WIN OF 2019
JACKSONVILLE, ILL. (October 5, 2019) - Logan Seavey thought he saw the window for a win shutting when Rico Abreu slid by on the 12th circuit in Friday's POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget feature at Jacksonville Speedway. However, a late rally brought Seavey right back to Abreu's bumper before a perfect diamond maneuver off turn two sealed the race's fate when the No. 67 shot by the No. 97 with only four laps left.
A historical win on several levels, Seavey's Friday night triumph was the scene of a handful of noteworthy milestones for the Sutter, California 22-year old. The driver of the Keith Kunz-Curb Agajanian Motorsports, Mobil 1, Bullet/Toyota No. 67 tied Christopher Bell for the winningest single-season (11 wins), tied Zach Daum for fifth on the all-time wins list (19 wins), and tied the late Bryan Clauson for the most career wins at Jacksonville Speedway (5 wins).
Before the epic Abreu/Seavey battle heated up and well before the "Sutter Cut" was thrown in victory lane, Friday's 30-lapper took the green flag with Jesse Colwell of Red Bluff, Calif. and Tyler Thomas of Collinsville, Okla. pacing the field. Thomas, a three-time winner at Jacksonville, initially put his No. 91T to the point, but things drastically changed on lap two as Thomas hopped through turns three and four before catching the wall and bouncing to a disheartening stop.
Colwell, who leads the POWRi National Midget League title hunt with six races to go, assumed the lead aboard his KKM, IWX Motor Freight, Bullet/Toyota No. 71, but it didn't last long. Going a lane above Colwell, Seavey, who started fourth, zipped around his teammate and controlled the second circuit as the restart brought the field back to life.
Seavey was strong in the opening stages as 16-year old Cannon McIntosh of Bixby, Okla. and Rico Abreu of St. Helena, Calif. worked by Colwell to take second and third. The second and final caution waved on lap seven for a stopped Devin Camfield, which would bunch the field up and give McIntosh along with Abreu a much-anticipated shot at Seavey.
On the restart, Abreu aggressively attacked McIntosh for second and soon secured the spot with a low-line dive into turn one. Setting his sights on Seavey, Abreu tracked down his KKM teammate and pounced on lap 13, throwing a turn three slider that quickly cleared and gave him breathing room out front.
While it looked as if Abreu and his Safelite, Bullet/Toyota No. 97 were large and in charge out front, Seavey was tracking his every footstep and methodically prepping his game plan through the final stages. Making it a race with five to go, Seavey saw his opportunity with lap traffic looming and went for the move.
Diamonding off turn two, a patented move that has guided Seavey to four previous Jacksonville W's, the No. 67 cut on a dime from the top to the bottom and zoomed by Abreu down the backstretch on the 27th lap. From there, it was all about defense for Seavey, who still had Abreu breathing down his neck over the final mile of the race.
Abreu's relentless effort came up just short, however, as Logan Seavey's late-race heroics paid off and he cashed in for his 19th-career POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League victory. His fifth victory in the last six events at Jacksonville sets Seavey up for a potentially historic Saturday with the record for the most wins in a single season now on the line.
Coming home with a close, but tough-to-swallow second-place bid was Abreu aboard his No. 98 entry. Tanner Thorson of Minden, Nev. rounded out the podium with a tenth-to-third run in the Hayward-Thomas Motorsports No. 19. Cannon McIntosh and Zach Daum closed out the top five while Jake Neuman (sixth), Jesse Colwell (seventh), Tucker Klaasmeyer (eighth), Tanner Carrick (ninth) and Ace McCarthy (tenth) finished inside the top ten.
The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League returns for another night at Jacksonville Speedway tonight Saturday, October 5 alongside the MOWA Sprint Cars, the Ron Milton Race of Champions, Modifieds, Street Stocks, and a Kids Mods exhibition.

COURTNEY CLAIMS THRONE IN 4-CROWN MIDGET MAIN

Rossburg, Ohio (September 28, 2019).........Tyler Courtney had all the right moves in Saturday night's 4-Crown Nationals presented by NKT.tv USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget feature, but when you're amidst a high-speed game of chess on the banks of Eldora Speedway, you've got to have all the right moves at just the right time.
That's among the laundry list of accomplishments the Indianapolis, Ind. driver achieved in becoming just the third driver to repeat a 4-Crown Midget feature victory, joining Rich Vogler in 1985-86 and Kyle Larson in 2011-12.
Yet it took everything in his might to prevail for the second time in as many years after waging war in a lap-after-lap classic Eldora patented slider-fest involving Tanner Carrick and Logan Seavey.
Seavey, the defending series champ, jumped to the initial lead on the opening lap, sliding to the top of turn one past both pole sitter Jerry Coons, Jr. and outside front row starter Carrick. Carrick quickly took control by turns three and four with a slider past his Keith Kunz Motorsports/Curb-Agajanian teammate to take the lead.
The red flag came early in the 25-lap event, on lap five, when 12th running Jason McDougal walked away from a turn four flip.
When racing resumed, Seavey immediately went on the attack, sliding by Carrick. Carrick returned the favor on the other end, rinse and repeat, as the two teammates put on a spectacular show of who could make the other blink first.
Courtney cleared two-time 4-Crown Midget winner Rico Abreu for third on the seventh lap and closed in on the top two, riding the rim in formation behind Carrick and Seavey with two car lengths separating the freight train nearing the halfway point.
With 10 to go, Seavey made a breathtaking scoop to the bottom in turn three, climbing the stairs to the outside wall as he slid past Carrick, leading by a single car length at the line. Both Carrick and Courtney went double-barrel buckshot low into turn one nose to tail, sliding past Seavey, who countered underneath off turn two and drag raced Carrick into turn three, reclaiming the advantage.
Carrick went right back to the well and fired another shot on Seavey in turn three with eight to go, sliding by Seavey and drifting up, tapping the wall with his rear bumper as Seavey ducked under off turn four to narrowly nip Carrick at the line by a bumper.
Heading into one on the 19th lap side-by-side, Carrick clamped down on Seavey, driving to the middle on entry while Seavey went even lower. Both drifted high to the outside wall in turn two, but Carrick surged ahead to the lead the fight into turn three where Courtney split both Carrick and Seavey, threading the needle between turns three and four.
Seavey muscled his way back ahead of Courtney for second as the front runners worked their way by the lapped car of Andrew Layser. Courtney chose the low line under Layser on the back straightaway as Seavey's momentum was briefly stifled. Seavey came back at Courtney, both drifting wheel-to-wheel to the concrete with Courtney kissing the wall with his right rear tire and launching around the outside to secure second with now just five laps remaining.
On laps 22 and 23, Courtney went into action, slide jobbing Carrick into turn one. But, each time, Carrick had an answer, driving downhill off the second turn to beat Courtney into turn three to claw his way back into the lead.
However, coming to the white flag, Courtney went after Carrick once more in turn one, successfully pulling off the slider. Carrick drove low off two to pull even with Courtney midway down the back straightaway. Courtney used the lapped car of Karsyn Elledge as a sort of pick, closing up the alleyway that Carrick would've aimed for into turn three.
Courtney distanced himself just enough on the final circuit, disallowing any chance of one final haymaker from Carrick into turn three to score his seventh series feature victory of the season and the 12th of his career over Carrick, Seavey, Rico Abreu and Kevin Thomas, Jr.
"I just tried to time my moves right, but Tanner kept coming back," Courtney explained. "He's turning into one heck of a driver. That one was a lot harder than I was hoping for, but this is Eldora and that's what this place is all about."
For Carrick, it was a story of "what could've been" after leading a race-high 20 laps.
"I ran that whole race as hard as I could," Carrick said. "It's just kind of a bummer. I got into lapped traffic there and Tyler squeezed me down into a lapped car and I lost all my momentum and my shot at getting back around him. There weren't enough laps to get my speed back up and going. This is a big momentum place, and once you're out front, you just keep going and you're good. It kind of sucks. I led a lot of laps there and came out with a second. Maybe next year."

NEUMAN STEPS IN, TAKES TEAM RIPPER TO BELLE-CLAIR WIN IN FIRST NIGHT
BELLEVILLE, ILL. (September 13, 2019) - Taking the wheel of the Team Ripper No. 21KS on Friday night at Belle-Clair Speedway, Jake Neuman of New Berlin, Ill. delivered a long overdue first win of the year for car owner Steve Reynolds and crew chief Flea Ruzic. After taking the lead on lap six, Neuman fended off mid-race pressure from Austin Brown and survived a late charge from Logan Seavey to score his third win of 2019 and the fifth of his POWRi National Midget career.
Making his 179th career appearance with the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League, Friday's attempt aboard the No. 21KS marked the first time in his seven-year career that Neuman drove for anyone other than his father, Jim Neuman. A series of severe crashes and recent motor trouble over the past month in his own No. 3N contributed to the decision to make a one-off appearance, a decision that paid dividends.
For Team Ripper, the eighth time was the charm, as Neuman became the eighth driver to pilot the No. 21KS in 2019, but the first to park it in victory lane. The list of racers before Neuman is simply a who's who of today's motorsports landscape. Up-and-comer Karter Sarff, USAC sensation Jason McDougal, modified driver Nick Hoffman, micro sprint star Joe B. Miller, Triple Crown champion Tracy Hines, USAC Sprint Car points leader C.J. Leary and California gasser Maria Cofer are all among Team Ripper's 2019 pilots, but it was Neuman who got the job done first.
Starting the 30-lap feature from the fourth-spot, Neuman earned his slot in the outside of row two after jetting away to a dominant heat race win from the pole. However, it was Daniel Robinson of Ewing, Ill. who led the field to green after snagging PAC Racing Springs High Point Man honors backed by a seventh-to-second charge in the opening heat.
Leading the charge into turn one, Robinson quickly assumed the point while Neuman went top shelf to jump from fourth-to-second in the first lap. A lap five caution for Holley Hollan, Andrew Felker and Jesse Colwell halted the action and threw a wrench in the championship battle, sending Colwell of Red Bluff, Calif. to the infield with a DNF as he watched his points lead diminish.
Going back to green, Neuman saddled up and drove flatfooted into turn one with a big slider heading for Robinson as he mounted a bid for the lead. Unable to come back at him, Robinson settled into second as Neuman took the point and focused on clear track ahead on the sixth circuit.
While the high side came in and proved to be the prime place to play, the ultra-fast 1/5th-mile surface became tough to manage in the pack as the speed ramped up lap after lap. Essentially a cowboy up atmosphere on the lip, it was slide or be slid to take position, making for intense mid-race restarts.
The final restart roared to life with 13 laps left as Neuman maintained a strong pace ahead of Austin Brown, who won the May showing at Belle-Clair, and Logan Seavey, who was hungry for his tenth win of the season after starting in the tenth spot. While Neuman put his head down and ran away with the lead, Seavey shot by Brown with eight to go and immediately began cutting into Neuman's 2.6 second advantage.
Eating into the gap each lap, Seavey snuck closer and closer to Neuman's rear bumper as the race came to a close. By the time the two-to-go signal was given, Seavey had the No. 21KS in sight and was only behind by one-second, but the time was running out too fast.
Seavey's late-race charge did not come fast enough, as the checkered flag dropped, and Jake Neuman won his fifth career POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League main event in his debut in the Team Ripper No. 21KS. Marking his third win of the year, Neuman's big night solidified all of Reynolds and Ruzic's hard work and brought him closer to the third spot in this year's championship chase.
Logan Seavey of Sutter, Calif. ran out of time in his pursuit of a tenth victory in 2019, settling for a tenth-to-second run aboard his Keith Kunz-Curb Agajanian Motorsports, Mobil 1, Bullet/Toyota No. 67. Rounding out the podium was local favorite Austin Brown of Millstadt, Ill. in the plain jane No. 17 with a third-place effort.
Zach Daum of Pocahontas, Ill. made a massive gain in the hunt for the title as his fourth-place finish narrowed Colwell's advantage from 350 points to 180 points. 16-year old Cannon McIntosh made a remarkable recovery after spinning on lap 11, going tailback, and storming back to a fifth-place result.
Rounding out the top ten at Belle-Clair was Karter Sarff of Mason City, Ill. in sixth-from-14th aboard the AJ Felker No. 37X, Tanner Carrick in seventh-from-15th with his Walker Filters No. 71K, 14-year old Daison Pursley in the eighth spot driving his Toyota Racing No. 9, Ace McCarthy with hard charger honors from 23rd-to-ninth, and Shelby Bosie in the tenth position.
Tomorrow, the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets encounter the "Mighty Macon" Speedway alongside the POWRi Engler Machine & Tool Outlaw Micros. Pill draw is from 3:30pm to 5:15pm followed by drivers meeting at 5:30pm with hot laps at 6:00pm and racing to follow. SEAVEY SOARS TO SPECTACULAR RIM-RIDING WIN AT SPOON RIVER
CANTON, ILL. (September 7, 2019) - Putting an exclamation point on a weekend sweep, Logan Seavey of Sutter, Calif. continued his winning ways on Saturday night with an exciting late-race rally to take the cake at Spoon River Speedway. Going top shelf, Seavey tiptoed around the outside of the 3/8th-mile and treaded the cushion while rocketing to the lead with five to go and storming off for his ninth POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League win of the year
In a season chalked full of dominance, Saturday's triumph gave Seavey yet another accolade in his booming career. Not only did the 22-year old Keith Kunz-Curb Agajanian Motorsports star sneak closer to Christopher Bell's record of 11 POWRi National Midgets wins in a single season, but he became the all-time leader in a separate category.
Scoring his 17th-career victory in thrilling fashion, the Sutter, Calif. native advanced to eighth on the all-time wins list and surpassed Darren Hagen of Riverside, Calif. to become the winningest California driver in POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League history.
Before the pageantry of yet another victory lane commenced, a trio of leader commanded the field in what was an all-around enticing 30-lapper. Started by the front row of Tanner Carrick and Jake Neuman, it was Neuman of New Berlin, Ill. who found the top first and led the opening lap aboard his Jim Neuman Racing, Brandt, BOSS/SR-11 No. 3N.
Neuman's advantage was shortlived, however, as Carrick of Lincoln, Calif. came bolting to the lead on lap two and pointed his Keith Kunz-Curb Agajanian Motorsports, Walker Filters, Bullet/Toyota No. 71K to the top. Bringing his KKM teammate along for the ride, Carrick saw a charging Seavey throw several sliders his way early on but responded to every attempt and maintained command lap-in and lap-out.
While Carrick and Seavey were focused on each other, a new challenger came roaring to life as Tyler Thomas of Collinsville, Okla. methodically rolled the low line and put his BT Machine, Spike/Toyota No. 91T in contention. With open track ahead, Thomas drove by both Seavey and Carrick to assume the race lead on lap eight.
A lap ten caution restacked the field and bunched them up, but Thomas remained strong out front while Seavey struggled with passing Carrick for the second spot and the back end of the top five continued shuffling with Spencer Bayston, Tucker Klaasmeyer, Ace McCarthy and Zach Daum all battling.
However, that intense fight for position soon turned drastic, as Bayston's No. 19 and Klaasmeyer's No. 27 collided at the entry to turn three, resulting in both cars going for nasty tumbles. Both drivers would climb out of their respective cars, although very gingerly, showing the magnitude of the scary crash.
Going back to green with 11 laps left, fans at Spoon River were treated to a three-way for the top spot as Thomas crept down low, Carrick rolled through the middle and Seavey. Blasted the cushion. Finding the sweet spot up top, Seavey swept around the outside and built his momentum before flying by Carrick and then tracking down Thomas for the lead with five to go.
Clearing the pass at the exit of turn four, Seavey's No. 67 rocketed off the banking and went screaming down the frontstretch as he edged ahead of Thomas' No. 91T to lead the 25th lap. Keeping it close, Thomas kept Seavey honest and made it a close race until a slow lapper on the bottom held him up and essentially handed Seavey the W.
Leading only five laps, Logan Seavey lurked in the late running and capitalized for his ninth POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League win of the 2019 season. Completing a weekend sweep for the Keith Kunz-Curb Agajanian Motorsports, Mobil 1, Bullet/Toyota No. 67, Seavey won his first-ever event at Spoon River all the while inching closer to the history books.
Trailing Seavey to the finish line was Tyler Thomas with a close second-place result and Tanner Carrick with a third-place effort. Rounding out the top five was Zach Daum and Jesse Colwell, while top ten finishers included Ace McCarthy in sixth, Jesse Love in seventh, Andrew Layser in eighth, Holley Hollan in ninth and Daison Pursley in tenth.
The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League resumes next weekend with a trip to Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill. on Friday, September 13 and then a night at Macon Speedway in Macon, Ill. on Saturday, September 14.

SEAVEY STAMPS NEW CHAPTER IN MAGICAL SEASON WITH JACKSONVILLE WIN
JACKSONVILLE, ILL. (September 6, 2019) - When you're hot, you're hot; and Logan Seavey has simply been on fire in 2019. The Sutter, Calif. native made it eight victories in 14 starts with the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets on Friday night at Jacksonville Speedway. Storming from seventh-to-first, Seavey did so while outlasting a stout field and dangerously dancing on the edge of the cushion aboard his Keith Kunz-Curb Agajanian Motorsports, Mobil 1, Bullet/Toyota No. 67.
Extending his mark to 16 career victories, eight of which have come in 2019, Seavey inches closer to the record of most POWRi National Midget victories in one season, which is currently owned by Christopher Bell's 11-win campaign in 2014. Now, with ten races remaining, the 22-year old Toyota Racing Development star has a chance to break and potentially shatter Bell's benchmark.
Before he put the stamp on yet another unrelentless run to victory, Seavey had to take the green flag from the inside of the fourth row. Pacing the field out front, 17-year old Ethan Mitchell of Mooresville, N.C. had control of the start in his Bundy Built Motorsports No. 19M. However, it was the outside polesitter who controlled P1 when the opening circuit was recorded, as Jesse Colwell of Red Bluff, Calif. shot out of a cannon and put his IWX Motor Freight No. 71 to the point.
Driving away with ease, Colwell was dominant in the early stages while his KKM teammate, Jesse Love, maneuvered by Mitchell and took his JBL Audio No. 97K into the second slot. Early trouble for eighth-running Michael Pickens and fourth-running Robert Dalby hampered what were once two promising performances and bunched the field up.
While the battle for second turned red hot between Mitchell, Love and Seavey, the craziest moment of the night lurked around the corner. Going red on the tenth circuit, chaos ensued when third-running Ethan Mitchell caught the outside wall in turn two, sending his No. 19M into a frenzy of flips before landing on all four.
However, that was only the beginning. Climbing out of the car with a stuck throttle as the car leaned against the wall, Mitchell escaped the wreckage but his Honda powerplant continued to scream and light up the tires in a harrowing moment for fans and workers. After a few brief seconds of shock, a track worker stepped into the fray and reached into the cockpit, flipping the kill switch, and ending the madness.
Going back to green, Seavey instantly went on the attack, diamonding off turns one and two before rocketing by Colwell down the backstretch and clearing him for the lead with a turn three slider on lap 11. The final stoppage of the race came moments later when Jake Neuman slapped the cushion and went barrel-rolling in turn two on lap 13. He was okay and the race would restart for the final time.
Immediately gapping the field, Seavey pulled away while Tanner Carrick of Lincoln, Calif. hustled by Colwell to make it a 12th-to-second run. Throughout the final half, Carrick did all he could in attempting to track down a blistering-fast Seavey, but fell just short in his quest.
Leading the final 20 laps, Seavey set the Keith Kunz-Curb Agajanian Motorsports, Mobil 1, Bullet/Toyota No. 67 on cruise control in his dominating performance. The eighth win of his 2019 season and 16th of his POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League career brings the Sutter, Calif. one step closer to his own slice of history.
Chasing Seavey to the line and completing a Keith Kunz-Curb Agajanian Motorsports sweep of the podium was Tanner Carrick of Lincoln, Calif. in the Walker Filters No. 71K and. Jesse Colwell of Red Bluff, Calif. aboard the IWX Motor Freight No. 71. Behind them and filling out the top five was Tyler Thomas of Collinsville, Okla. with a 14th-to-fourth bid and Tucker Klaasmeyer of Paola, Kans. in fifth with the Link-Belt Excavators No. 27.
Also finishing inside the top ten was Cannon McIntosh in sixth, Jesse Love in seventh, Ace McCarthy in eighth, Daison Pursley in ninth and Sam Johnson in tenth.
The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League will be back at it tomorrow Saturday, September 7 for a round at Spoon River (Canton, Ill.) Speedway alongside the Midwest Open Wheel Association Sprint Cars.

WISE BRINGS THE 39BC HOME TO VICTORY AT BC39

Speedway, Indiana (September 5, 2019).........Before he had even laid eyes on The Dirt Track at IMS, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway had already occupied a special place within the heart of Zeb Wise.
He'd been triumphant in a quarter midget at the Battle at the Brickyard and also became the first ever winner on The Dirt Track at IMS in 2018, snagging the Stoops Pursuit.
After Thursday night's victory in the Driven2SaveLives BC39 powered by NOS Energy Drink, the track became the showcase for a defining moment in the 16-year-old racer's burgeoning career where he led the final seven laps to score the biggest victory, and the richest payday ($15,000), of his young career.
One of the main influences on The Dirt Track at IMS becoming a reality was Bryan Clauson, the namesake of the BC39. Angola, Indiana's Wise has carried BC's spirit onward, driving for Bryan's father's Clauson/Marshall Racing team and piloting the No. 39BC on the USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship trail which he put into victory lane in front of a large throng of spectators on this memorable late summer night.
Wise's IMS story began earlier this decade when competing at The Battle at the Brickyard. It was there where Tim and Bryan Clauson, already a racing star in his own right, noticed Wise. When the time came, he was hand-picked by the Clausons to become a part of the team, leading him on the path to the biggest win of his career thus far.
"A lot of people don't know this, but Bryan and Tim, the first time they noticed me was at the quarter midget track that they run called Little Brickyard," Wise recalled. "That was the first time they ever got in contact with me. To carry over from the first time they saw me here, and now we're out there winning big races, it's very special not only to me, but probably even more special to the team."
Wise was in a hurry to get things done from his fifth starting spot at the drop of the green for the 39-lap main event. He whittled his way to second past Kevin Thomas, Jr. after the two clipped bumper to bumper off turn four when Thomas snagged the curb. Wise set up shop, went to the bottom and slid up in front of Thomas to pocket the runner-up spot.
Pole sitter Thomas Meseraull remained in control up front, keeping Wise in check a handful of car lengths back until the 18th lap. That's when a four-car quagmire ensued with Tucker Klaasmeyer first getting upside down, followed by Jerry Coons, Jr. plowing into Klaasmeyer and getting on his lid as well while Gio Scelzi and Cannon McIntosh also became entangled in the fray.
That's where it nearly came to a premature end for Meseraull, who made a hard left to avoid clipping the stopped car of McIntosh. Wise, just behind Meseraull, took evasive action as well, narrowly missing misfortune.
On the ensuing restart, Wise gained a full head of steam coming downhill off the top of turn two to zip by Meseraull for the race lead as Jason McDougal and Kyle Larson came in tandem to go to second and third as Meseraull slipped to fourth. A three-car chase at the front saw Larson go topside around McDougal for second and pounce when Wise bobbled atop the fourth turn cushion.
Larson instantaneously pointed his nose to the bottom and used a major run to slide across the nose of Wise into turn one, securing the lead off turn two. Moments later, however, Michael Pickens' car came to a stop in turn four, sending Larson back to second and returned Wise to the head of the field for the restart.
As he had done all throughout the night, Wise was a force on restarts, and was able to stretch it out to a half-straight lead by the back stretch on the lap 21 resumption. Nonetheless, Larson leashed Wise back in in no time and was clamped down on the shadow of Wise with less than 15 laps remaining.
On lap 28, Wise biked in turn three atop the cushion, which was basically be an extension of the outside concrete wall at that point. It was seemingly no harm, no foul, as Larson got on the binders to avoid contact with Wise. Both kept their foot in it and put their wills on the razor's edge in turn one as Larson attempted to slide Wise in turn one. With just enough room to fit the width of a midget and the thickness of two dimes between them, Wise never wavered from the top, kept his right foot on the hammer and escaped through the other side of the needle to hang onto the spot just before early race leader Meseraull flipped in turns three and four, concluding a promising run for the high-point man who led a race-high 18 laps.
On the following restart, all broke loose again, with Larson taking his run at Wise with a slider into turn three. By the time the two arrived at the exit of turn four, nowhere was there room to spare. Larson and Wise made contact, sending Wise ramping up the wall and landing on all fours while defending BC39 winner Brady Bacon snuck by on the bottom from fourth to first past McDougal, Larson and Wise to rip the lead away on lap 29.
Larson then slowed with a flat left rear tire to force a yellow flag, putting Wednesday's Stoops Pursuit winner/survivor out of contention for the win, although he did race back to a ninth-place finish. Meanwhile, Wise's mind was racing with concern over whether his race was in jeopardy, admitting he thought his race was over after the contact.
Following a lap 31 red flag for a McIntosh flip between turns three and four, Wise's curiosity grew stronger as he pondered what could be wrong at the moment with his Clauson-Marshall Racing/Driven2SaveLives - Sundollar Restoration/Spike/Stanton SR-11x.
"I knew something was wrong," Wise admitted. "Heck, I couldn't even hold it straight down the straightaways. I knew something was going on. We had a red flag there and the push truck driver came to me and I said, 'Dude, what is wrong with the front end?' He looked it over and said, 'Looks like you have a bent steering arm.' At that point, I knew it wasn't something serious, and that I didn't need to pull off the track because it was going to be a hazard or anything."
Thursday's win at The Dirt Track at IMS was Zeb Wise's fourth career USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget feature victory, and his first outside the state of Pennsylvania.

Experiencing a handful with his steering wheel in addition to the flurry of action surrounding him, Wise overcame and persevered, utilizing a lap 33 slide job to overtake Bacon for the lead and bring CMR teammate Chris Windom along with him on the bottom, who cranked down the shocks and lay in wait to capitalize on any mistake by Wise down the stretch.
In a race that changed its complexion frequently and without hesitation, FMR Racing teammates Bacon and McDougal had drifted back to fifth and sixth where they tangled on the front straightaway on lap 35, ending the team's bid for a repeat BC39 victory.
Racing resumed with Wise and Windom continuing their side-by-side joust as Christopher Bell entered the ring and was challenging both for the lead as he followed Wise on the high side of three where he bounced and buoyed his way atop turn three with three laps to go, bouncing the left side of his roll cage off the track surface before springing back up and landing on all fours, putting a premature end to his bid for a win with front end damage.
Wise used another strong restart to gain separation on the lap 37 restart ahead of CMR teammates Windom and Courtney (who started 20th). Windom on the low line and Courtney up top dug in during their proverbial fist fight for the runner-up spot. Windom began a slow fade as the bottom began to slicken and Courtney found the traction up top to pull ahead coming to the white flag.
Wise put an end to the dramatics, stamping his name in Indianapolis Motor Speedway lore on the final lap as he nailed the entry and exit to each end of the racetrack on the 39th circuit to win by 0.372 sec. over Courtney, Windom, Chad Boat and Logan Seavey.
After a beginning to the season that saw mixed results, Wise has won three of the last five in USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget competition, but none bigger than the one he earned Thursday night at IMS.
"We've been on such a hot streak lately," Wise said. "It doesn't matter where we go, you know we're a factor. When we came off that hot streak in Pennsylvania, I knew this was going to be the one that would really show what we've got, and we got it done."

LARSON THE LAST ONE STANDING IN BC39 STOOPS PURSUIT

Speedway, Indiana (September 4, 2019).........Kyle Larson literally became the last man standing on the final lap of the Stoops Pursuit during Wednesday's opening night of the Driven2SaveLives BC39 powered by NOS Energy Drink at The Dirt Track at IMS.
On the last lap of the fifth and final segment of the 25-lap event, three drivers remained on track and were in contention for the victory after 22 of the 25 starters had been eliminated from competition in the unique format that sent drivers to the infield if they were passed or were involved in an accident.
Michael Pickens (Auckland, N.Z.), Kyle Larson (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.) entered the back straightaway off turn two under a proverbial blanket on the last lap. Pickens dove underneath Larson entering turn three on the final lap. As both went for the same piece of real estate at the entrance of turn three, Pickens' right rear tire climbed Larson's left front, sending Pickens flipping wildly and Larson into a 360 spin at the edge of the infield.
Moments later, Grant seemed to have a clear path to victory on the top side, but instead, banged his right rear tire off the turn three wall, sending himself into a series of barrel rolls against the concrete.
Remember Larson? With a cloud of dust kicked up from the infield and his camber askew, he pointed his Keith Kunz-Curb-Agajanian/Curb Records/Bullet by Spike/Speedway Toyota in the right direction, tip-toed around the bottom of the fourth turn and gassed his way back to the finish line as the winner.
The unpredictable turn of events was reminiscent of a combination of both the 1976 Daytona 500 finish between Richard Petty/David Pearson as well as Danny Sullivan's spin-and-win on the same property at IMS back in 1985, earning Larson $2,100 for his efforts and being a part of one of the wildest moments in the century-plus history of racing on the IMS grounds.
"That was wild," Larson exclaimed. "I didn't know it was going to be that crazy of a race. On the second to last stage, Justin (Grant) got by and then (Jason) McDougal got by, and I knew I needed to get back to second to be able to run that last round."
"I was really good up top," Larson continued. "I knew if I got a good restart, I could get by Pickens. But this track was so racy that sliders were easy to throw. Michael (Pickens) was throwing everything he had at me. We made contact there on the back stretch. He was trying to park it on the bottom, and I was trying to do what I did the lap before, two laps before."
Wednesday marked the first night Larson had been on track in competition at The Dirt Track at IMS after not competing in last year's inaugural BC39 event.
"I was bummed I couldn't make it last year," Larson admitted. "I saw how exciting it was and said, 'screw it, I'm going to try to make it.' I made it to the Indy airport at 4:45 just in time for hot laps. It was worth it, though. I hope we can be up here again tomorrow."
The BC39 continues Thursday, Sept. 5, with the finale. The event will have the public gates opening at 3pm and cars on track for practice at 4:30pm, with qualifying races to follow at 5:30pm. Opening ceremonies are slated for 7pm and immediately followed by the main feature events, starting with multiple D-Mains, C-Main, the semi-feature and the 39-lap main event.
