WINDOM WRANGLES UP WIN AT JEFFERSON COUNTY

By: Richie Murray - USAC Media

Fairbury, Nebraska (July 17, 2020).........Chris Windom withstood Buddy Kofoid's repeated, relentless challenges down the stretch, including during a hellacious final four lap trophy dash to the finish, to capture his third USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget feature victory of the season in Friday night's Riverside Chevrolet-Buick-Cadillac Midwest Midget Championship presented by Westin Meats & Schmidt's Sanitation at Fairbury, Nebraska's Jefferson County Speedway.

In a 30-lap feature that was stop-and-start throughout, with a number of cautions and a pair of red flags impeding the proceedings, Windom worked his way to the lead just prior to midway after pole sitter Ethan Mitchell led the first four laps of his USAC career while Cannon McIntosh controlled the front of the pack from lap five until Windom worked his way by on the 12th circuit just following a restart.

Windom found it much easier to catch rather than pass at the 1/5-mile dirt oval on this particular night. However, Windom felt that door was being left open on restarts, which allowed him to get a run to take the top spot from McIntosh after multiple attempts in turn three on back-to-back laps. Windom officially claimed the number one position just prior to a caution for the stopped car of Cole Bodine in turn four on lap 13.

A rhythm was difficult to find as the laps clicked away on the southeastern Nebraska metronome, but Windom was right on beat as he opened up his lead to 1.5 seconds and encroached on the tail of the field in the waning stages.

Yet, as Windom began to track down traffic that was running three and four-wide at times, Kofoid was right on his trail, closing to within a couple car lengths of Windom with four laps remaining.

In the thick of the battle, third running Tanner Thorson, who had earlier set Fatheadz Fast Qualifying time, spun to a stop in turn two to bring out the final yellow. While another stoppage wasn't ideal for the rhythm section of the equation, Windom wasn't all that bummed to see the yellow light.

"I was really happy to see that caution because, actually, under the last caution, I had leaned the car down and I forgot to turn the fuel back on. I felt like we were running on six cylinders and thought we were blowing up. It was really just my own fault there, so luckily, we got that figured out."

Now without traffic as a hindrance, Windom had another battle to wage, the one under his helmet, where he had to decide where on the track to go in order to keep a hungry, first-win-seeking Kofoid behind him.

"The restart, and a couple of laps after the restarts, were the toughest part, really," Windom explained. "You could get such a big run if you threw a slider into one. It was hard to decide, as the leader, whether to go to the top or slide yourself and lose momentum. At the end of the day, it all worked out, but it was definitely a hellacious last couple of laps."

It worked out A-Okay for Windom during the first couple of laps following the restart, but Kofoid was setting up his next move that he ultimately made with two laps remaining, sliding by Windom entering the first turn with little room to spare. Windom made contact with the rear bumper of Kofoid, elevating all four wheels of Windom's Tucker-Boat Motorsports/NOS Energy Drink - Pristine Auction/Spike/Speedway Toyota off the racing surface.

"He ran us hard there, and when he slid me in one and two, I just ran him hard back," Windom recalled. "That's how you have to pass guys here, though. No fault of him, really, sliding me hard. I felt like I had taken control of the race, though, and I was really not going to let that slip away at the end, so I did what I had to do to keep the win."

Once Windom landed on all fours, he took off straight for the bottom of turn three as Daison Pursley stuck a nose in to the battle to briefly make it three-wide on the back straightaway. Windom got to the bottom first, exited off turn four and, as he sped underneath the white flag, attempted to jet back to the bottom of turn one, resulting in contact between Kofoid's front chrome and Windom's rear bumper.

That move slowed up Windom's momentum off turn two, but Kofoid was only able to get half a car length under Windom as Windom made a beeline back to the bottom of turn three, forcing Kofoid and Pursley to try high as a last ditch effort, to no avail, as Windom sprinted to the checkered flag for the fifth time in his USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget career by two car lengths over Kofoid, Pursley, Tyler Thomas and Cannon McIntosh.

While Windom came into Jefferson County as the point leader, he has been a force all year with top-five finishes in all but one of his 12 series starts. Despite that fact, the Canton, Ill. driver readily admitted that it was during Indiana Midget Week, where they won five of six races, that the individuals on the crew and behind the wheel realized how much potential they had.

"Having (Kyle) Larson come in and run with us, it definitely made everyone step their game up a little bit," Windom revealed of the four-time IMW 2020 winner and champion. "He gets 100 percent out of the racetrack every single night and makes you be better. We had already won a race and run up front, but he definitely showed how much speed there really is in these cars. It's nice to be able to keep showing it and keep picking off the wins."

THUNDER ON THE HILL RACING SERIES

CHRIS WINDOM & TYLER “SUNSHINE”COURTNEY TO RESUME BATTLE ON THE HILL . . . .

NOS ENERGY DRINK USAC NATIONAL MIDGET SERIES KEN BRENN MIDGET MASTERS AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY TUESDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 4

BECHTELSVILLE, PA JULY 13, 2020 . . . . . In 2019, the NOS Energy Drink USAC National Midget Series invaded the Grandview Speedway as part of the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series. The thirty lap USAC Midget event, dubbed the Ken Brenn Midget Masters was nothing short of a barn-burner as Chris Windom and Tyler “Sunshine” Courtney battled for the victory. Windom of Canton, IL prevailed the winner to claim the first ever, Ken Brenn Midget Masters at Grandview. Both Windom and Courtney (Indianapolis, IN) will be in the field at Grandview on Tuesday night, August 4 when the USAC Midgets team up with the 358 NASCAR Modifieds for this Thunder on the Hill Double Header.

There is more on the line than just the feature win at Grandview, Windom is the current NOS Energy Drink USAC National Midget Series point leader with “Sunshine” sitting third in the point chase. Nestled between these two USAC stars is rookie sensation Buddy Kofoid.

The midgets have a long and rich history at Grandview and many say, the Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, PA is the perfect track for the midgets.

This special night is being dedicated to Ken Brenn, an individual with a reputation rich in midget history and someone who once promoted midget racing at Grandview. Ken Brenn is an absolute “class act” and has been part of the local racing fabric for many years, enjoying much success as a modified car owner and a prior promoter of the Bridgeport Speedway. Some other surprises are being arranged as we honor Ken who is planning to be at this event and drop the first green flag of the night!

The 2020 USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series is highlighted as Grandview Speedway opens the Pennsylvania Midget Speed Week on Tuesday night, August 4 that will include five consecutive nights of racing.

Time trials and qualifying events will lead up to the Ken Brenn Midget Masters 30 lap feature event paying $3,500 to the winner.

The 358 Modifieds will play an equally important part of this event with qualifying and a 30 lap feature that will $3,000 to the winner. Ryan Watt is hot off a Thunder on the Hill victory Tuesday night when he thrilled fans taking the win over a four car race for top spot. Jeff Strunk, Duane Howard, Craig VonDohren, Rick Laubach, Doug Manmiller, Brett Kressley, Kevin Hirthler to name a few.

The Tuesday night, August 4 Ken Brenn Midget Masters and 358 NASCAR Modified double-header will get underway at 7:30 PM with gates opening at 5 PM. Low, Down & Dirty is already hard at work planning the pre-race Meet and Greet. Some expected USAC Midget entries in addition to Chris Windom, Tyler Courtney and Buddy Kofoid include Tanner Thorson, Cannon McIntosh, Tanner Carrick, Justin Grant and Cole Bodine just to name a few.

POWRi Racing

Winner Ace McCarthy (Ryan Black Photo)

Grain Valley, MO - In what was an eventful POWRi Lucas Oil National and West Midget League feature event at Valley Speedway, Ace McCarthy had to fend off several challenges as he wired the field for his second career POWRi victory. McCarthy's Valley Speedway victory was his first driving for Dave Mac Motorsports.

Taking the early lead from polesitter Zach Daum after going three-wide into turn three, McCarthy took control of the 30-lap feature event coming out of turn four to lead lap one. Enduring several cautions early, McCarthy consistently pulled away from the field on the restarts as the field jockeyed for position on back.

The biggest threat to McCarthy's momentum occurred with nine laps in, as Ethan Mitchell spun a 360 in turn four while running third, Amber Balcean flipped wildly through turn four bringing out the open red. Returning to racing, McCarthy switched from running the ledge all the way around to rolling the bottom in one and two, while continuing to rip the lip in three and four.

All the while as McCarthy remained out front, the top three jockeyed for position with Michael Buddy Kofoid eventually working the third position away from Zach Daum. Coming down to the final turn, second running Daison Pursley threw everything he had with a slider into three, but McCarthy powered on to victory. Pursley tied his career-best finish of second with Kofoid completing the podium. Cannon McIntosh and Andrew Felker rounded out the top five.

"Towards the end we started getting pretty tight in three and four and I was just trying not to mess that up," commented Ace McCarthy. "There's a little rut up there and I was just trying to stay in it and get that drive off. I knew if I kept it down in one and two, Daison wouldn't get around me. He was definitely putting some pressure on me. That's where I won here last year. On the bottom in one and two and the top in three and four. You just had to be patient and get in easy in three. Cody Cordell, Robby, and Matt gave me a great car tonight. I can't thank Dave Mac enough for giving me a car to drive."

"Congrats to Ace and Dave Mac Motorsports," said Daison Pursley. "It was a good race there. I wish we wouldn't have had that red. I would have ran the bottom and tried to pass him, but we had the red flag and had the opportunity for Cody to tell Ace we were running the bottom down there.

"I knew the bottom at the last half was basically the place to be in one and two," stated Michael Buddy Kofoid. "I could run it so good, and honestly, I think I was better that first and second on the bottom. We were about even on the top in three and four. Towards the end, I saw some guys rolling the bottom, so I moved down there and caught them. The track just made it tough to gain any ground. I think if we actually got third in that heat race, it would have helped us. But I don't know what the deal was there. I think one spot in the heat race could have made the difference, but we'll come back here tomorrow and try to be two spots better."

POWRi Racing

Winner Michael 'Buddy' Kofoid (Danny Clum Photo)

Humboldt, KS (7/11/2020) - In what was an action-packed 30-lap feature event at Humboldt Speedway between the POWRi Lucas Oil National and West Midget Leagues, Michael "Buddy" Kofoid claimed the checkers over Kaylee Bryson and Daison Pursley for a Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports podium sweep. Kofoid's Humboldt Speedway victory is his fourth POWRi win of 2020.

Sharing the front row with Zach Daum, polesitter Chance Morton pounced to an early lead over Daum and Kaylee Bryson. But before the action could heat up, the yellow was displayed for Cade Cowles in turns one and two. Coming back to green, Morton rocketed on the start, only for the red to stop the action, as Noah Gass took a tumble down the backstretch.

Returning to racing, the red would come out again as Jesse Love took flight in turns one and two. As the field returned to racing, a blanket could be thrown over the top four, as Morton narrowly led a cluster of cars including Daum, Bryson, and Kofoid. Exiting turn two, Bryson took the second position from Daum as Morton started to fall back.

By the fifth lap, Bryson overcame Morton for the top position as Daum took over second. Near midway, Kofoid had closed enough to steal the lead from Bryson. Even as Kofoid encountered lap traffic, it wasn't enough to give Bryson any advantage as Bryson was forced to settle for second. Coming out of four and to the line for the final time, Daison Pursley narrowly edged Zach Daum for third. Sam Johnson completed the top five.

It should also be noted that Bryson's second-place finish places her in the record books alongside Holly Shelton and Holley Hollan as another highest-finishing female in the POWRi National Midget competition.

"It was really just a matter of who ran it the hardest," commented Michael Buddy Kofoid. "It ended up rougher than what we thought, but it wasn't as evil in the center as some of the others. Hat's off to our whole crew on tonight. Big thank you to Keith Kunz Motorsports and Toyota, I'm really excited, and even more so, now, for tomorrow night."

"Buddy's good; he's a great teammate," said Kaylee Bryson. "I'm just getting my laps in. I want to win so bad and really hope it's one of these next races. I'm learning every time I get in this car."

"It's always good to finish third on the podium to my teammates," stated Daison Pursley. "There's top-notch stuff here. The race track was good and the cars kept getting better and better. It was pretty tricky here tonight, so I wasn't expecting that. It kind of got cowboy up there at the beginning of the race and then smoothed out to the top. I'm really looking forward to carrying this momentum into Valley Speedway tomorrow."

Trey Gropp Claims First POWRi Lucas Oil West Midget League Victory

Garden City, KS. (07/04/2020) Wrapping up night two of the 5th Annual Midget Roundup for the POWRi Lucas Oil West Midget League at Airport Raceway, where 25 midgets battle it out to find the fastest way to victory lane. After 30 trips around the fastest 1/6-mile dirt oval in Kansas, Gropp would use the high line to perfection, to capture his first ever POWRi Lucas Oil West Midget League Win.

Trey Gropp found himself on fire all night. Picking up a heat race win early in the night would set him up well for the feature event. Starting in the fourth position for the 30-lap feature, Gropp found himself taking the green and settling into the third-place position. Robert Dalby and Cannon Mcintosh battled for the top two positions, while Gropp followed behind in third. The leader, Robert Dalby, hit lapped traffic and found himself battling for position on track. McIntosh tried to sneak by Dalby in turns 3&4 while he still found himself battling with lapped traffic. All while Gropp goes four in the fluff to take the lead coming out of turn 4. Gropp will lead lap 10 as a caution came out.

Gropp still leading, McIntosh followed behind in the second position, they took the green flag and made contact in the corner, which caused them both to lose some ground. Gropp and Mcintosh broke away from the rest of the field with 15 laps completed. Gropp stood his ground and rode the top side to claim his first POWRi Lucas Oil West Midget League Victory.

McIntosh Scores Victory back in his Family Owned Car for Night #1 of the 5th Annual Midget Roundup.

Garden City, KS. (07/03/2020) Cannon McIntosh, hops back in his family owned #08 for the weekend with POWRi Lucas Oil West Midget League, and finds himself in victory lane. At the fastest 1/6- mile dirt oval in Kansas, all eyes were glued on the front-runners battling for the top positions. After losing the lead to Trey Gropp, McIntosh regrouped and found himself back in victory lane for the third time this season with the POWRi Midget Leagues.

Cannon McIntosh in the #08 lead the field to green flag competition, with the #2 of Bob Harr to his outside. McIntosh takes the early lead on the top side, while Bob Harr, Tristin Thomas, Robert Dalby, and Trey Gropp are fighting for positions 2-4. The #43 slows on the front stretch bringing out the caution. Once racing resumed on the racetrack, McIntosh would once again stretch his lead over the field. Gropp took over second place position from the #28 of Thomas.

McIntosh endured heavy lapped traffic ahead of him, which caused the #00 of Trey Gropp to reel him in. As McIntosh battled with a lapped car on the top side, Gropp took the bottom side of the racetrack and found himself taking over the lead. Gropp lead a lap, then gets into the back of a lapped car causing his motor to slow. McIntosh regained the lead and found himself back in victory lane for the third time this season. Followed by second place runner, Trey Gropp and rounding out your top three, Robert Dalby.

"Gropp got by me there, and I just wasn't driving hard enough. I was way tight, I just started working hard through traffic and I got back by him. I just needed to drive the car harder" Stated McIntosh. "It's cool that when Keith and the team aren't racing, I can come down here and we can put something together and go win."

"I followed the lapped car into the corner, and I caught him with the right front. The engine actually died, but somehow I kept it running." Stated second place finisher, Trey Gropp after his career best POWRi finish.

"We struggled coming off of turn two, the motor was spitting and sputtering. I have to go through and look at a couple of things, but otherwise, not a bad night." Stated third place finisher, Robert Dalby.

THUNDER ON THE HILL RACING SERIES

NOS ENERGY DRINK USAC NATIONAL MIDGET SERIES. . . .

RETURNS TO GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY WITH KEN BRENN MIDGET MASTERS & 358 MODIFIEDS ON TUESDAY NIGHT AUGUST 4

BECHTELSVILLE, PA JULY 1, 2020 . . . . . The fans asked for it and the USAC Midgets are returning to the Hill!

The NOS Energy Drink USAC National Midget Series will be part of the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series Tuesday night, August 4 with the 2nd Annual Ken Brenn Midget Masters 30 joined by the NASCAR 358 Modifieds in a big double-header at Grandview Speedway. The midgets have a long and rich history at Grandview and many say, the Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, PA is the perfect track for the midgets. Last years’ event proved that as Chris Windom took the win over team mate Tyler “Sunshine” Courtney in a thriller.

The 2020 USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series is highlighted as Grandview Speedway opens the Pennsylvania Midget Speed Week that will include five consecutive nights of racing.

Some expected USAC Midget entries include Chris Windom, Tyler Courtney, Buddy Kofoid, Tanner Thorson, Cannon McIntosh, Tanner Carrick, Justin Grant and Cole Bodine just to name a few.

Adult admission tickets are $28, Children 6 to 11 are $10, Children 5 and under will be admitted free. The pit fee is $40 and a license is not required. Advance tickets are available by calling 443 513 4456. Please speak clearly and provide your first and last name and the number of tickets you need. Advance tickets orders will only be taken up to the day before the race. We apologize, but advance tickets will NOT be available on race day.

The conditions and requirements under the COVID-19 situation are ever changing and we will provide updates as we approach race night. To offer the safest possible conditions for our fans, competitors, officials, safety crew and track employees, we are making the following requests.

Please bring exact change when purchasing general admission tickets or pit passes.
