MANMILLER, DYLAN SWINEHART, AND BLAINE EMERY CONTINUE NEW WINNERS STREAK AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA. April 30, 2017. . .The new winner’s streak continued at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. Back after a week hiatus courtesy of Mother Nature, 35 Modified, 18 Late Model and 34 Sportsman drivers were ready to mix it up in qualifying events to participate in their respective features on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway and three new feature winners put their names in the record book.
After three Saturday nights of NASCAR stock car racing there have been nine different feature winners.
Doug “The Handler” Manmiller dove underneath leader Ryan Grim to take the lead away on the 24th lap of the 30-lap NASCAR T.P. Trailers 358 Modified feature and proceeded to win his first feature of the current campaign behind the wheel of the Jason Miller-owned No. 44M. Manmiller ran high and low until the bottom line came in and he could make his move. With five laps to go Manmiller dealt with lap traffic and as long as they held their line he knew what maneuver to make to keep the others in tow.
A new name was added to the win column in the BRC NASCAR 25-lap Late Model feature. Blaine Emery, who returned to the 1/3-mile oval after missing several seasons, held off the challenges of opening night winner Ron Kline until he encountered problems with a lap car and later Kyle Merkel. It was Emery’s first career win despite having overheating problems.
Second year racer Dylan Swinehart overcame the sophomore jinx to collect his second career win and his first of the year in the 25-lap NASCAR Sportsman feature. He didn’t have an easy time capturing the win. Earlier he lost the lead to rookie Jeromy Guistwite on a restart, but on another restart he kept the pedal to the metal and regained the lead. In later stages he was able to withstand Mark Kemmerer’s continuous bids.
Providing all feature winners had the TP Trailers decal and the VP Racing decals if they ran gas in addition to meeting all the necessary requirements, they received monetary awards from T.P. Trailers and products awards from VP.
Fans heading out to Grandview Speedway for Saturday night NASCAR stock car racing action are reminded that starting this Saturday the spectator gates open at 5:30 p.m. and racing will start at 7:30 p.m. As is normal the Saturday night show will feature the TP Trailers 358 Modifieds, BRC Late Models and Sportsman. At least 12 events of racing.
And the Enduro and Blast from the Past Vintage racing on Sunday will consist of a 100 lap Big Car Enduro, 100 lap Small Car Enduro, 50-lap Junkyard Car Enduro and Ladies Race. Also Blast from the Past Vintage Stock cars will have a 15 lap feature for their Vintage Division and 15-lap feature for Modified class. Racing starts at 1 p.m. with a $10 adult admission cost.
Modified feature action had Danny Erb jump into the early lead trailed by Colt Harris, Ryan Grim, John Willman and Kenny Gilmore.
Harris, who was having a strong run chasing down Erb, brought out the first caution when he stopped in the first turn after smoking the previous laps.
Erb maintained the lead on the restart with Grim now in second.
Lap 13 was not a lucky one for Erb since for the second time while leading, he stopped between turns three and four with mechanical problems. This time it appeared to be a broken front-end suspension. Erb’s misfortune was Grim’s fortune as he now inherited first. On the restart cars stacked up behind Grim were Manmiller, Mike Gular, Kyle Borror and John Willman.
Grim, who received the Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award, and Manmiller battled side-by-side for several laps with Grim taking the high line and Manmiller the inside groove with neither one giving up.
Manmiller took advantage to take over the lead on the 24th lap when Grim pushed up high in turn four and Manmiller dove underneath.
Behind the front pair anticipating a false move were Gular, Borror and Jared Umbenhauer. Lurking in the wins trying to get into the top five were Craig Von Dohren and Jeff Strunk.
Gular overtook Grim with two laps to go and tried to reel in Manmiller, but ran out of time.
At the drop of the checkered Manmiller was in victory lane for the first time since September 3, 2016. Chasing him across were Gular, Grim, Borror and Von Dohren.
Kenny Gilmore, Gular and R. Grim won the qualifying heats. The consi was won by Duane Howard.
Emery passed Shawn Horning for the lead on the second lap of the Late Model feature with Kline following through at the same time for second.
Kline’s bid for another victory was erased after he made contact with the lapped car of Jordan Knepp and hit the first turn wall.
On the restart Cory Merkel, running fifth, spun in the first turn with several others involved. The next attempt at another lap was better as Emery was still first trailed by Kyle Merkel, Steve Wilson, previous winner Brian Shuey and Chuck Schutz.
In the closing stages a three-way battle for first ensued between Emery, Merkel and Shuey.
Emery kept everyone at bay and went on to chalk up the victory and also received the Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award. Finishing second was K. Merkel followed by Shuey, Wilson and Schutz.
Heats were won by Shuey and Emery.
The beginning of the Sportsman feature was a rather scary one when Ryan Shupp and Nathan Mohr made contact and Mohr took a wild flip in turn one. Several others were also involved with Jordan Henn, left with nowhere to go, had Mohr’s car landing on top of his. Mohr and the others escaped injury, but Henn was taken to the hospital to be checked as a safety precaution.
When action resumed Jeromy Guistwite, a rookie this season, was the race leader followed by Swinehart, Jesse Landis, Ken Eckert Jr. and Jim Housworth.
Craig Whitmoyer brought out another yellow when he spun in the second turn on the second lap. On the restart Swinehart got the edge on Guistwite and moved into first.
The pair battled feverishly and neither one was ready to stop trying.
A first turn multi-car accident on lap six had the yellow waving again. On the restart Swinehart pushed up a bit off turn four and Guistwite was back in front.
Kyle Lilick spun in the second turn on the 13th lap. The restart was void since Eckert Jr., having a solid run, stopped in the third turn. This time Swinehart was determined to regain first and he did just that as Guistwite couldn’t hold off the hard charger since he had his hands full holding off Kemmerer and Housworth.
Kemmerer, whose car was badly damaged from the first lap incident, wasn’t deterred by how the car looked; overtook second to begin challenging Swinehart.
Housworth got out of shape in turn four, corrected it and continued. Guistwite, left with no place to go, spun for the final caution with three laps remaining. Swinehart held his pace with Kemmerer right behind.
Swinehart never surrendered the lead once he regained it and was in the winner’s circle for the first time followed by Kemmerer, Housworth and opening night feature winner Brian Hirthler and rookie Louden Reimert.
Guistwite, Ryan Higgs and Swinehart won the heats. The consi was won by Kyle Lilick.

The Catskills Mountains of New York State finally sprung back to life Friday evening as the the sounds of race cars and the mighty cheering of happy fans opened up the Accord Speedway for the 2017 racing season. Promoters Gary and Donna Palmer ushered in the long-awaited season opener at their pristine racing facility located in the area once known as the "Borscht Belt." The speedway opened last evening to a cast of familiar and new driving stars and these stars offered high speed action with daredevil skills on a race track like no other found on the entire East Coast. A great opening night crowd delayed the opening but once inside they witnessed seven race divisions on a day that was excellent weather wise throughout the evening. Capturing opening night wins at the speedway were "BK Speed" Brian Krummel in the United Pump & Tank Modifieds, "The Bushkill Bullet" Kyle Rohner in the Arkel Motors Sportsman, Bob Sleight Upstate Auto Pure Stocks, "The Radical One" Thomas Radivoy in the WRWD Radio NEWS Sprint Cars, "The Cold Spring Kid" Jake Mason in the Want Ad Digest Junior Slingshots and "The Jersey Force" Anthony Recchio in the WRWD Radio Rookie Sportsman and Johnny Bankich in the Emmanuel's Marketplace 4-Cylinder Enduro main event.
Brian Krummel and the returning "Statesman" Jerry Higbie brought the starting field to the green flag for the start of the 30-lap Modified headliner. Higbie wasted no time in blasting to the front of the pack with Krummel in hot pursuit. Higbie blasted off of the top of the raceway like a man possessed only to pull to the infield before ten laps were completed with motors troubles. Krummel inherited the lead and would go on to capture the opening win with "Iron" Mike Ricci in hot pursuit for much of the event finishing second. Local ace "Little Richard" Smith was third with a great strong run while the unheralded "Concrete Kid" Kyle Van Duser was equally as strong in fourth place and "The Chairman of the Board" Rich Ricci racing from 22nd starting spot to round out the top five in a splendid driver to the front. Danny Creeden was sixth with invader Brian Malcolm seventh, Danny Tyler eighth from 21st, Anthony Perrego ninth and Richie Eurich finishing tenth.
The Arkel Motors Sportsman feature headliner found a pole start and a fast hot rod the instant formula for success as Kyle Rohner grabbed the lead at the start of the event raced away at will from the rest of the field as he captured his opening night win. Rohner, a former two time champion at Accord, showed the right stuff with a strong run to the win with "The Otisville Outlaw" Corey Cormier finding runner-up honors. Milton Mann was strong all night and finished third while Brandon McGill hustled from 16th starting place to finish fourth with Tony Kowalchuk returning to action and finishing fifth. Jim Johnson, Collin DuBois, Leo Fotopolous, Winter Mead and Tyler Johnston completed the top ten.
Bob Sleight led all laps to triumph in the Upstate Auto Pure Stock feature race. While Sleight led all of the laps, Steve Williams kept it interesting throughout the event as he challenged for most of the event only to have Livy Johnson slip past him late in the race to capture runner-up honors. Williams would finish a hard fought third place with Travis Brockner fourth and Jim Maher completing the top five. Newcomer John Hechinger, Ray Tarantino, Emerson Cargain Jr, Jay Smalley and Chris Kanuk completing the top ten.
The Want Ad Digest Junior Slingshots found Jake Mason wiring the field as he led all laps on his way to victory. Jayden Sleight Was the runner-up.
The WRWD Radio NEWS Sprint Cars found Eric Jennings leading for two laps before Thomas Radivoy found the sweet line at the top of the raceway to pull even and then go past Jennings. Jennings would keep it close throughout with much pressure also coming from Keystone State star Heidi Hedin. Radivoy would earn his first career win at Accord with Jennings second, Hedin third while "The Breadman" Corey Wood was fourth and Brett Graham completed the top five.
The WRWD Rookie Sportsman field was a good one and even though the attrition rate was a bit high on opening night, there is a good deal of talented future stars in the group. The night belonged to Anthony Recchio as the high school student lead all laps to capture his first win at Accord. Recchio was coming off a win on the previous Saturday night at the Hamlin Speedway. "The Flash" Bobby Flood kept pace throughout the event to finish second with Kenny Ryder third, Hunter Lapp fourth, and returning from a ten year layoff Jimmy Devitt was fifth.
A new winner graced victory lane in the Emmanuel's Marketplace Enduro showdown. Dave Donovan had things going his way up until the white flag lap when Johhny Bankich overhauled him and led the final lap to claim the popular victory. Donovan was second with Paul Harding, Jeff DeGroat and Cody Helms completing the top five.
GEMSTONES:
Heat winners for the opening night event included Kyle Rohner, Milton Mann and Cole Hentschel in the Sportsman division. Pure Stock heats were won by Bob Sleight and Steve Williams. Three heats were needed to set the field for the Modified division with Brian Krummel, Jerry Higbie and Richard Smith claiming wins while the consolation win went to Chad Loidice. In the Junior Slingshot heat it was Jake Mason in for the win. Eric Jennings capture the lone heat in sprint car action. Rookie Sportsman heats were claimed by Bobby Flood and Anthony Recchio
The start of the event was delayed for a few minutes to allow the crowd a chance to find their way to their seats in a solid opening night event for the speedway and the Palmer Family. The Palmer Family is celebrating their seventeenth anniversary as the owners and promoters of the Accord facility.
The Accord concession stands were at full tilt as the hardworking staff busted their humps to cover the hungry racing crowd that came out to support the speedway.
The speedway itself was in spectacular condition as Promoter Gary Palmer spent the entire week in working his magic on the multi-channeled raceway that saw three and four wide action throughout the evening of events. All of the drivers offered their praises for the well groomed facility.
Many new cars and paint schemes were the order of the day for the pit area that bustled all evening long. Eleven time Accord Modified Champion Rich Ricci Jr was back in action and Allison Ricci was on board for opening night. Sportsman Champion "Jammin" Jimmy Wells moved into the Modified division but suffered from a lost wheel early on in the feature event. Bob Tersillo, Corey Wood and winner Thomas Radivoy were all new faces for the sprints while Brett Graham, a Modified campaigner at Accord is trying the sprint division with a non traditional look racer. It was good to see "Tommy Gun" Tommy Johnson return to the Modifieds. While running well, he too felt the mechanical gremlins and fell from the event. It was nice return to action for Jay Smalley in the Pure Stocks while new faces included Tanner Granaker and John Hechinger. Rookie Sportsman newcomers found former regulars Jimmy Devitt and Tom Vasta returning to the racing wars while Hunter Lapp, the defending Junior Slingshot Champ, finishing fourth in his new division.
All in all it was a great opening night event. Grandma Annie's pies were distributed to all of the feature winners.

THUNDER ON THE HILL RACING SERIES
THUNDER SERIES OPENS 2017 WITH MODIFIED, SPRINT & SPORTSMAN TRIPLE HEADER SUNDAY, MAY 28 AT GRANDVIEW
The twenty-eighth season of the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series will open on Sunday night, May 28 at the Grandview Speedway. The popular series that is sponsored by NAPA Auto Parts and presented by Pioneer Pole Buildings will open with the Big Block Modified/358 Modified Showdown competing in a series of qualifying events leading up to the 40 lap feature paying $5,000 to the winner, $1,000 for tenth and $500 just to start the main event for pre-entered drivers. Also on the card will be the Sportsman and MASS Sprint Cars, competing in qualifying events leading up to a 25 lap Sportsman feature and a 20 lap sprint car feature.
Modified drivers pre-entered for this event include Craig VonDohren, New York modified driver Keith Flach, Billy Pauch Jr, Jared Umbenhauer, Kevin Hirthler, Kyle Weiss, Danny Bouc, Brett Kressley and John Willman to name a few. There is no entry fee and drivers or car owners may enter by calling 443-513-4456. Even for race teams that do not Pre-enter, a very attractive payoff will offer $4,000 to win $400 to take the green flag in the feature event. This event is also a point race for the season-long NASCAR points.
The Pioneer Pole Buildings mobile sales unit will be on display at all of the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series events including the Sunday, May 28 Triple Thunder Thriller. Gates will open at 5 PM with qualifying getting underway at 7:30 PM. Admission prices are $25 for adults, $10 for children 6-11 and children five and under will be admitted free. The pit fee is $35 and a license is not required.
The 2017 season continues just two weeks later with the invading USAC National Wingless Sprint Car Series on Tuesday, June 13 competing with Grandview's premier racing division the NASCAR 358 Modifieds.
The 2017 racing season will include activities and promotions, providing fun for the fans with elements such as: Pre-Race Pit Tours, the Inside/Out Experience - where fans can sign-up to watch hot laps from the infield, the Low Down & Dirty Radio Show pre-race Meet & Greet, JOE "THE PIZZA DUDE", giveaways, fireworks, and appearances by Miss Thunder on the Hill, Lauren Fischer.
NAPA Auto Parts continues their long run with Thunder on the Hill as the Series title sponsor, joined by Pioneer Pole Buildings, Quaker Steak and Lube, and GALCO Business Communications.

BILLY PAUCH, JR. WINS SEASON OPENING 358 MODIFIED FEATURE AT NEW EGYPT SPEEDWAY
New Egypt, NJ (April 16, 2017) – At New Egypt Speedway’s season opener presented by Oliver Communications Group, Billy Pauch, Jr. was the victor in the 358 Modified feature. Ryan Godown scored the win in the Northeast Wingless Sprint Car main event. The Hammer Sportsman feature went to Billy Osmun, III. David Burns topped the competition in the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie race.
When the 30-lap 358 Modified feature got underway, Andrew Bohn sped to the front with David Van Horn, Chad Barney, Billy Pauch, Jr. and Kevin Vaclavicek in pursuit. Following an opening lap caution period and restart, Pauch Jr. drove into the runner-up position and began to track down Bohn. On the fourth circuit, Pauch, Jr. slipped by Bohn to gain the lead. With a clear track, Pauch began to pull away until the yellow flag appeared on lap seven for Chris Grbac. On the ensuing restart, Van Horn worked his way by Bohn just before a multi-car incident took place in the fourth corner. When action resumed again, Pauch, Jr. and Van Horn remained in the top two positions with Ryan Godown taking third from Bohn. The final caution period of the contest took place on the eleventh tour as Danny Bouc’s car veered into the outside wall in the first turn. When the green flag waved, Pauch, Jr. fended off Van Horn with Godown, Barney and John McClelland next in tow. At the halfway point, Pauch, Jr. was stretching out his advantage as Van Horn and Godown were dicing for second place and a battle for fourth was brewing between Barney and McClelland. On lap twenty, Pauch, Jr. began to encounter lap traffic. With five circuits remaining and in heavier traffic, Pauch, Jr. was still in top with Van Horn nudging closer. As the two to go signal was given, the third place running Godown began a final surge towards the top and closed in on Van Horn. When the checkered flag waved, Pauch, Jr. was in front to collect the opening night win with Van Horn holding off Godown for second. The Barney and McClelland duel went down to the wire with Barney taking fourth place. Lou Cicconi and Ryan Godown won the 358 Modified qualifying races.
In the 20-lap Northeast Wingless Sprint Car main event, Ryan Godown took the lead from Wayne Weaver on the fourth tour and led the remainder of the event. Weaver, who led the opening three circuits, finished in second place. Lee Nardelli came home in third. Lou Cicconi and Bobby Butler rounded out the top five. The Northeast Wingless Sprint Car heats were taken by Lee Nardelli and Ryan Godown.
Taking advantage of his pole starting position, Billy Osmun, III led every step of the way to win the 20-lap Hammer Sportsman feature. The victory was Osmun’s first ever in the division. The runner-up position was taken by Will Dupree. Bob Lineman, Jr. finished in third. Fourth went to Pat Wall with 2016 Rookie Champion Cale Ross coming home in fifth. Pat Wall, JR Fulper, and JT Trstensky were the Hammer Sportsman heat race winners. The consolation contest was won by Jimmy Amato.
After taking the lead from Walt McIntyre at the halfway point, David Burns drove away from the field to take the checkered flag in the 8-lap Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie feature. McIntyre came home in second. Rob Mancini, Joseph Brown and Richard Wegner, Sr. completed the field.
On Saturday, April 22 at New Egypt Speedway, the 358 Modifieds, Crate Modifieds, Street Stocks & Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman will be in action. Pit gates unlock at 3:00 p.m. with spectator turnstiles opening at 4:00 p.m. Hot laps get underway at 5:00 p.m. and the racing starts at 6:00 p.m. Admission to the grandstand is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and older, $10 for teens 12-15, $10 for military personal and their spouses with ID, and Kids 11 & under are FREE. Pit admission is $30 with a New Egypt Speedway license and $40 with no license.

KYLE WEISS WINS 35-LAP TP TRAILERS NASCAR MODIFIED FEATURE WORTH MORE THAN $3500 AT GRANDVIEW ON SATURDAY NIGHT; BRIAN SHUEY TOPS IN BRC LATE MODELS AND RYAN LILICK TOPS IN SPORTSMAN
BECHTELSVILLE, PA. April 16, 2017 . . . Kyle Weiss, Brian Shuey and Ryan Lilick didn’t fare well in their outings during opening night racing at Grandview Speedway last Saturday night.
In their second showing of the season all three more than made up for it as they all ended their night in victory lane in their respective division on Checkered Flag Fan Club Night.
NASCAR T.P. Trailers 358 Modified action saw Kyle Weiss inherit the lead from race leader Danny Erb on the 25th lap of the 35-lap main event when mechanical problems forced Erb to the sidelines. Weiss, who dedicated the win to promoter Bruce Rogers, who recently passed away, commented that Erb, “had the right line and the field covered,” before he broke.
Weiss’ $3,500 payday didn’t come easy since five-time point champion Duane Howard and defending and ten-time point champion Craig Von Dohren were bumper-to-bumper in the final stages of the event. It was Weiss’ first win of the year and his fourth career triumph.
Brian Shuey led the entire 25-laps of the BRC NASCAR LM feature for his first win of the current campaign and his 21st career win on a track he considered “very racy.”
In the 25-lap NASCAR Sportsman feature Ryan Lilick outgunned Paul Houseknecht on a restart and went on two claim his season first win by a narrow margin over runner-up Mike Lisowski, who found out Lilick was on a mission determined to win.
Proving the feature winners had the proper decals and met the necessary requirements, they received monetary awards from T.P. Trailers, Limerick and products from V.P. Racing Fuels if they ran gas.
Erb wasted no time keeping the Terry Fasnacht-owned No. 44 at the front of the 28-car starting grid on the initial green with Brian Krummel, rookie Joe Fanelli, Weiss and Addison Meitzler, returning after being out of action for numerous years, in pursuit.
A lap four, fourth turn tangle regrouped the field, but that didn’t deter Erb as he kept the momentum going to continue his pace. By this time however Brian Krummel, Mike Gular, Weiss and Meitzler completed second through fifth.
Weiss overtook second on the 13th lap restart needed when Meitzler stopped in the second turn with a flat time. At the same time Howard advanced to third to make it a three-way battle for the lead.
Erb’s hard fought efforts were in vain when he stopped in turn four to bring out the caution and out of contention. Erb’s loss was Weiss’ gain since Weiss was now the new leader. Weiss held onto the lead when action resumed, but now pressure was coming from Howard, Kyle Borror, Gular and Von Dohren. Lurking in the wings trying to break into the top five was Jeff Strunk coming off a feature win the previous night.
As hard as they tried no one was able to pass Weiss as he went on for the win. Chasing him across the line were Howard, Von Dohren, Gular and Strunk.
Weiss, Jared Umbenhauer and bobby Gunther-Walsh were the heat winners. The consi winner was Kenny Gilmore.
BRC Late Model action saw Shuey take off at the drop of the green and immediately pulled away from the 14-car field.
Chasing him down were Steve Wilson, last week’s feature winner Ron Kline, Wayne Pfeil and Bryon Sipe.
Kline’s hopes of two-in-a-row vanished when he stopped in the fourth turn for the second yellow with 13 laps complete.
Shuey was still the leader on the restart while Wilson, Pfeil, Sipe and defending point champion Chuck Schutz tried to change the status.
Shuey kept everyone behind him and went on chalk up the win in the 25-lap feature.
Shuey and Steve Todorow won the heats.
In the Sportsman feature Ryan Lilick became the new leader on the fifth lap restart when he made his way past early leader Paul Houseknecht.
Within no time Lilick had a sizeable lead built up leaving Houseknecht, Mike Lisowski, Ryan Beltz and brother Kyle Lilick trailing him trying to catch him.
Lisowski overtook second on the 12th lap and started running the high line to reel him in. He was gaining ground as the laps wound down and the 21st caution regrouped the pack. Lilick held his own and Lisowski gave him no change to make an error.
With two laps to go Lisowski made a run the outside along the homestretch, but found himself pinched out of running room
No one passed Lilick and he collected his first win of the current campaign and fourth career. Chasing him across were Lisowski, defending point champion Jordan Henn, Houseknecht and Beltz.
Heats were won by Lisowski, Houseknecht and R. Lilick. Brian Hirthler, opening night feature winner won the consi.
NASCAR stock car racing action returns to Grandview Speedway on Saturday, April 22nd with racing starting at 7 p.m. Included in the four division card of racing will be the TP Trailers 358 Modifieds, BRC Late Models and Sportsman along with a special appearance by the Blast from the Past Vintage racers. Admission is $15 for adults while youngsters 11 and under are admitted free.

HIRTHLER BROTHERS (KEVIN AND BRIAN) SWEEP NASCAR 358 MODIFIED AND SPORTSMAN VICTORIES AT GRANDVIEW; VETERAN RON KLINE SCORES LATE MODEL WIN
Bechtelsville, PA April 9, 2017 …………. Brothers.Kevin Hirthler, 39, and Brian Hirthler, 37, both of Perkiomenville, PA, took home a feature win, Saturday night at Grandview Speedway. Kevin scored his 12th career TP Trailers 358 Modified feature win at the high-banked third-mile dirt track, while Brian collected his second career Sportsman triumph at the popular Bechtelsville, PA raceway. The raceway promoted by the Rogers family celebrated 55 consecutive seasons of racing with the annual opening night program Saturday night.
Ron Kline, 48, of Salford, PA steering the Wanda Brown owned Junior Grebe Motorsports No. 3 Late Model claimed his 37th career feature triumph in the BRC Late Model main event.
“We’ve been trying to do this over the past five or six years, now, and finally we got it done tonight,” remarked a bearded Brian Hirthler after his win in the 25-lap Sportsman fray aboard his self-owned Pioneer Pole Building No. 4* Sportsman car.
Provided they met all requirements each feature winner earned bonus bucks from TP Trailers and Truck Equipment of Limerick. And VP Racing Fuels had product awards for top performers that met the requirements.
Coming up on Saturday, April 15th, 7 p.m. is the first extra distance event of the season for the T.P.Trailers NASCAR 358 Modifieds. They will be featured in a 35-lap main event paying $3500 to win along with T.P.Trailers and VP Racing Fuel bonuses. Also included will be the BRC Late Models and Sportsman. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with the Low Down and Dirty Meet and Greet set to take place as gates open.
In the 25-lap Late model main, Chuck Schutz, the 2016 Late Model track champion, started from the pole in a heads-up start after winning the first heat race of the night. Kline, also a heat winner, started outside the front row. With the green it was Schutz out in front over Kline through the first seven circuits prior to the caution on Lap 7.
The new green again showed Schutz on top over Kline through Lap 12. Off turn 4 on Lap 13, Kline ducked under Schutz and took the top spot crossing at the starters stand. >From that point on it was Kline going on to victory, with Schutz pressuring Kline several times in the final 12-laps, but never getting out in front. Schutz pressed Kline, but wound up runner-up, with Kyle Merkel finishing up third. Stephen Todorow brought home a solid fourth in front of Brian Sipe.
Heat winners for the 15 Late Models in action were Chuck Schutz and Ron Kline.
“You got to keep your foot in it,” explained Kline. “We survived. The lapped cars were all over. Tonight, being in second was a better thing. I found the guard rail twice tonight and got by Chuck down there off the bottom in turn 4 and, believe me, once I got out in front I wasn’t about to give it back. Junior Grebe gave me a heck of a car.”
Kline now has won three of the last five features run at the track in recent years on Opening Night.
In the 30-lap 358 Modified feature, 10-time track champion Jeff Strunk started from the pole with Kevin Hirthler outside the front row chauffeuring his self-owned Bicknell chassied Pioneer Pole Building No. 117 mount. With the green it was Strunk powering out on top over Hirthler, as the caution was out after a lap. On the new green Hirthler was quicker on the restart from the outside lane, dropping Strunk to second spot for lap 2 in front of Brett Kressley. Lap 8 brought out another caution involving Kyle Borror, Ryan Grin and Kyle Weiss, as Kressley headed to the pit area with a flat tire.
On the restart from the outside lane it was Hirthler out in front again on Lap 9 as Strunk stayed close. Hirthler remained out in front, with another caution on Lap 13.
Again from the outside lane it was Hirthler scoring Lap 13 as the race leader. Caution again on Lap 15 bunched things up, but Hirthler remained out in front, with Strunk applying heavy pressure every tour. Hirthler kept his advantage and easily took the win in the 30-lapper over Strunk, with Craig Von Dohren finishing up a real strong third-place. In fourth it was invader Ryan Watt and five-time track champion rounded out the top five finishers.
Heat winners for 38 358 Modified racers were Strunk, Hirthler, Dan Wasempacher and 9-time speedway championVon Dohren, who was the 2015 and 2016 358 Modified champion. Consolation winners were Chris Gambler and Brian Houseknecht.
“I won three features here in 2015 and got zero wins in 2016,” explained Hirthler. “One night I was leading the feature and broke a bolt. Strunk got passed me and won that night taking that win from me. I guess tonight we got him back, with this win?
“I might have jumped Jeff slightly on that restart early on, but he certainly had his chances to get me back throughout tonight. All the yellow’s just kept coming out. The track was choppy because of all the wet weather we’ve had recently. Give the track crew time to work on it. It’s understandable. Everyone knows I am out there pushing on the gas every lap. We had a great race car tonight,” said Hirthler.
The Sportsman feature saw Craig Whitmoyer vault out on top after starting from the pole over Brian Hirthler. Kenny Bock took third and Brian Papiez fourth. Papiez advanced to third by Lap 3 and immediately challenged Hirthler for second spot. The top three ran nose-to-tail for laps 9, 10 and 11 and laps 14 and 15 saw Papiez and Hirthler battling it out for second.
By Lap 16 Hirthler got hooked up on the high outside and in turn two he drove by Whitmoyer to take the top spot, while running with a couple of laps in lapped cars. Two slower lapped cars crashed right in front of the leaders racing through turns 3 and 4 and nearly took out the top runners, but a lap wasn’t completed. Lap 17 it was Hirthler again taking the lead, but Brad Arnold stopped in turn two to quickly bring out the caution.
The new green showed Hirthler out in front over Whitmoyer, Jordan Henn and Papiez, as the caution was waving again after 19 rounds for Papiez, who broke the front suspension.
The green reappeared with Hirthler on rails and flying out in front of Whitmoyer. Invader Cale Ross, normally a New Egypt Speedway runner, climbed up to third with 20-laps completed in front of Henn and Jim Housworth. It remained that way to the checkered.
Heat winners for 36 Sportsman racers were Whitmoyer, Kenny Bock and Hirthler. Mike Lisowski took the win in the consolation.
“I was running the car hard,” said Hirthler. “I was gasping for air on lap 16. After the heat race I was convinced this car was a rocket. Whitmoyer gave me a real run for the money, but I had him covered running on the top, the bottom or down the middle tonight. This car was a rocket.”
