THUNDER SERIES RACING SERIES
NAPA AUTO PARTS & PIONEER POLE BUILDINGS PRESENT. . .
STEVIE SMITH CLAIMS THUNDER CUP AND FIRST GRANDVIEW WIN; HODNETT, HOWARD, AND VONDOHREN GRAB WINS IN 4 FEATURE SHOW TUESDAY NIGHT
BECHTELSVILLE, PA (July 26, 2016) – Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Stevie Smith captured the 410 Sprint Car Thunder Cup trophy, the $5,000 top-prize, and his first career Grandview Speedway win this past Tuesday Night when the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presented the 2nd Annual 410 Sprint Thunder Cup event at the Berks County dirt track. The race night sponsor was Pioneer Pole Buildings.
Greg Hodnett picked up the win in the 410 Sprint car make-up feature event, rain halted from PA Sprint Car Speedway. Duane Howard claimed the 30 Lap, $3,000 NASCAR 358 Modfied main event while Craig VonDohren picked up the win in the 358 make-up feature event.
Kunkletown, PA’s Ryan Smith started on the pole of the 35 lap Thunder Cup main event setting a rapid pace and hitting lapped traffic by the fourth circuit. Smith aboard the Warko No. 94 swapped grooves dodging lapped cars with Stevie Smith in the second position. Stevie Smith – the veteran – made his move on the fourth circuit pulling outside the ‘Kunkletown Kid’ – but it was the younger Smith making a bold move dodging between lapped cars to hold on to the top spot.
A lap 10 red flag for Freddie Rahmer – who got upside down after contact with a lapped car – halted the action for the only time of the race.
During the red flag, Ryan Smith discovered an issue with the radiator hose on his No. 94 machine draining the water out of his sprint car, handing the lead over to ‘The Black Bandit’ Stevie Smith.

On the restart, Stevie Smith powered away while Tim Shaffer battled Danny Dietrich and Greg Hodnett for the second spot.
With Smith at the helm at the halfway point, all eyes were on Myerstown, PA’s Brent Marks moving forward from the 11th starting position into the fifth spot. Smith held a full straight-a-way lead while Shaffer, Hodnett, Dietrich and Marks battled for the runner-up position.
Dietrich would overtake the second spot and close on Smith through the later portion of the event but it was ‘The Black Bandit’ maintaining the lead and rolling under the checkered flag in first position. Danny Dietrich finished in second, Greg Hodnett in third, Tim Shaffer in fourth and Brent Marks in fifth.
Tim Shaffer set the Quick Time with a lap of 12.603, Qualifying Heat Races were won Lucas Wolfe, Alan Krimes and Davey Sammons.

Greg Hodnett (WoS photo)
Thomasville, PA’s Greg Hodnett claimed his ninth Thunder on the Hill victory dominating the final 20 laps of the rain-delayed 35 lap PA Speedweek feature event. Hodnett set a rapid pace from the get go, pulling away from the lead with Brent Marks in tow. Hodnett weaved in and out of heavy lapped traffic holding off Brent Marks – who was closing on the leader. Hodnett picked up the $5,000 winner’s share, Marks settled for second, Lucas Wolfe in third, Aaron Ott in fourth and Stevie Smith rounding out the top five finishers.

Duane Howard (WoS photo)
Duane Howard, of Oley, PA, led the Mike Petruska Racing No. 66 to victory in the 30 lap NASCAR 358 Modified feature event. Howard started on the front row with Brett Kressley and charged to the front from the opening green flag. Howard switched lanes from the middle to the top spot holding off Kressley’s No. 357 machine.
A lap 10 yellow for Boyertown, PA’s Ryan Watt slowed the field for the only caution of the evening.
On the restart, Howard held on to the top spot with Kressley in second, while a three-car battle for the third spot developed between Craig VonDohren, Jeff Strunk and Modified rookie Mike Lisowski – with Craig VonDohren getting the best of the war.
With Howard setting the pace, VonDohren charged around the outside of Kressley for the second position and set his sights on the leader, closing with five laps remaining.
Howard would go on to pick up the win, VonDohren settling for second, Modified rookie Brett Kressley in third aboard the Norm’s Save Station No. 357, Jeff Strunk in fourth and Mike Lisowski in fifth – in less than half a dozen Modified starts.
Modified Heat Races were won by Jeff Strunk and Rick Laubach.

Craig VonDohren (WoS photo)
Oley, PA’s Craig VonDohren launched from his second place starting spot in the 30 lap make-up feature event, setting a rapid pace early on with Duane Howard, Rick Laubach and Jeff Strunk right on his tail. A bold three-wide maneuver around Howard and Strunk moved Laubach into the second spot setting his sights on VonDohren. Howard would pull pitside a lap later. Laubach closed the gap on the 12th circuit pulling alongside the race leader before retiring just two laps later. Strunk inherited the second place position and challenged VonDohren for the lead with five laps remaing. VonDohren would claim the $3,000 top prize, Strunk would settle for second, Jimmy Horton in third, Brian Hirthler in fourth, and Brett Kressley in fifth.
Thunder Notes
The four feature show was completed by 10:30 PM, the track was groomed twice throughout the night to ensure optimal racing conditions.

Cozze Conquers Autodrome Drummond
Wins first Super DIRTcar Series feature since 2008
DRUMMONDVILLE, Q.C. - July 26, 2016 - It had been eight years since Frank Cozze had seen victory lane with the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds. Cozze proved on Tuesday night at Autodrome Drummond that he still has what it takes as he came from his 19th starting position to take home the win over Larry Wight and Mike Mahaney.
"When you're 60, any win anywhere feels good," Cozze said in victory lane. "I want to thank my car owner, all of my sponsors, and all of my guys. My guys have been faithful to me for many years. I'm glad they're here for this first one. My tire guy never misses a beat and I think that's why we've been pretty consistent this year. He's on the ball. So I want to thank all of those people who put their hard work into it. I'm glad to call them my team."
Billy Decker and Brett Hearn brought the 30-car field to the green. Once the green flag dropped, Hearn overtook Decker as Hearn pulled away to an early lead.
A restart on lap 21 saw Wight charging off of the bottom of turn two as he drove past Decker for the second spot.
Nineteenth starter Cozze was into the fourth position by lap 32 as he began to pressure third place runner, Stewart Friesen.
Hearn was running the outside lane as Wight patiently worked the bottom groove and reeled Hearn in to capture the lead on lap 35.
Wight caught the back of the field on lap 39 but was soon halted as the fifth caution of the night was brought out on lap 40.
On the restart, Friesen dove into turn two on lap 44 underneath Hearn and captured second spot.
At halfway Wight led Friesen, Hearn, Cozze, Decker, Tim Fuller, Peter Britten, Mahaney, Jimmy Phelps and Mario Clair as the top 10.
Cozze claimed second spot from Friesen on lap 53 then slowly dug at the bottom to gain ground on Wight as he pulled away from Friesen. Cozze threw it into turn three as hard as he could and was able to capture the lead coming out of turn four to then pull away from Wight on lap 64.
Wight was not giving up without a fight as tension built for that top spot. Cozze and Wight battled wheel-to-wheel for several laps.
Cozze again caught the back of the field on lap 73 as he had six car lengths over Wight. Using the top and bottom grooves to his advantage, Cozze sliced his way through lapped traffic.
The eighth restart of the night was on lap 80 as the crowd saw Cozze bring the field back to the green.
Cozze drove his No. 35 Adirondack Chevrolet Big-Block Modified to score his first Super DIRTcar Series victory since 2008.
Wight and Mahaney battled for second spot in lapped traffic but it was Wight who held on by inches for the second spot.
"We had a really good car," Wight said. "We fired early and were able to get the lead and not waste any time. I think Frank had a better car. He was able to get around us on the outside. Once he found the bottom it was hard to run him back down. This Bicknell car we just switched to this Friday hopefully can help us keep our momentum going."
Third-place finisher Mike Mahaney, who started in 11th, was ecstatic with his finish.
"We didn't have a very good redraw. To come up from 11th to third in a Series race feels good to me. This is our local big-block that we run every week. It's our first top three for me and it feels good." Mahaney said. "I want to thank everybody who helps me out. It's just me and my dad tonight, feels special to have that bond. To come up here just the two of us to Canada, it's special to me. I can't thank him enough."
Cozze's best finish at Autodrome Drummond came in 1995 when he finished in second place to Steve Payne.
"The last time I was here I was in a sprint car some years back but in the modified it's probably been since 2006 or 2007," Cozze said. "I think the last time we were here I got third, and was four pounds light at the scale.
"This track is about as challenging as you're going to get. I ran my butt off those 100 laps as best as I could. Tomorrow at Granby is a little bit different deal but I have a group of good guys and a good car. So hopefully we will be okay."
Race Notes: 41 cars attempted to qualify. Billy Decker set fastest time overall with a 16.600 picking up the Pole Position Raceway fast time award. After an incredible firework show the top 30 cars were brought out to the front of the grandstands and were introduced individually in front of a packed house. Sheppard who was the points leader going into the night qualified through the last chance showdown, started 22nd in the feature and finished eighth. There were eight cautions brought out during the 100-lap main event.

HEARNE TAKES EMOTIONAL MODIFIED WIN AT WALL SATURDAY
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Jason Hearne used power, speed, handling and raw emotion to race to victory in the 40-lap main event for Downs Ford Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Saturday night. The victory on Christmas in July/NAPA Auto Parts Night was the second win of the season for the New Egypt resident who is the son of the speedway’s all-time most winning driver, Gil Hearne (101 wins).
Hearne took advantage of a front row starting spot to jump into the lead early and fought to hold that spot each and every lap. Brick’s Ron Frees was his first challenger before Holmdel’s Andrew Krause moved to second with Chas Okerson of Freehold advancing to third. Only three cautions slowed the test and Krause spent the first half of the event riding the outside lane trying to take the lead while Okerson was on their bumpers in third.
Okerson was finally able to slip into second on the inside lane near the half way mark and Howell’s Eric Mauriello followed him through for third. The tight top four of Hearne, Okerson, Mauriello and Krause then battled all the way to the finish with Ken Matlach of New Hyde Park, N.Y. wrapping up the top five.
“It is incredible to win on the birthday of the greatest racecar driver ever Richie Evans,” an emotional Hearne said in the winner’s circle. “He gave so much to so many but the greatest gift Richie Evans left me personally was Tara Evans Farrell and Richie Evans Jr. Also, I was given a photo of (the late) Jim Willis early tonight. I took the picture of his beautiful smile and sat alone for a while and it brought tears to my eyes. I had two angels riding with me that gave some much to so many and I hope I made them both proud tonight.”
Unlike the Modified race the 30-lapper for the Snap On Sportsman cars suffered with so many incidents that it had to be cut to 20-laps. Larry Thompson of Parlin moved to the front on lap eight and avoided all the trouble to take the win. Mayetta’s Tyler Truex was the runner-up with Jarrett DiGiantomasso, Tuckerton’s Robby Walton and Brick’s Dom Fattarusso completing the top five.
The Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks ran non-stop in their extra-distance 40-lapper with Mike Carr of Wall grabbing his second win of the year. Brian Osborn of Howell chased him most of the way before finishing second with Todd Pilla of Beachwood crossing the line third. Brick’s Ronnie Mullen and Fred Cannock of Port Monmouth were fourth and fifth.
Louie Keraitis of Toms River grabbed the lead on the final lap to win the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars 25-lapper. Defending champ Robert French of Howell was second while Nick Van Wickle of Edgewater, who led most of the way, settled for third. Vinny Troia and Malcolm Campbell were fourth and fifth. COZZE, SHUEY AND LISOWSKI ARE ALL REPEAT NASCAR WINNERS ON HATFIELD QUALITY MEATS NIGHT AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY SATURDAY
BECHTELSVILLE, PA. July 24, 2016 . . . Veteran racer Frank Cozze piloted the Tom Umbenhauer/Harry’s U-Pull-It No. 4 to his third 30-Lap T.P. Trailers NASCAR 358 Modified All-American Racing Series feature of the season in the Saturday night stock car racing action sponsored by Hatfield Quality Meats. The slick track was to the Dirt Hall of Fame chauffeur’s liking since the car worked wherever he put it which aided in his comfortable finish ahead of runner-up Steve Swinehart. Cozze also received $250 from T.P. Trailers and was eligible for $150 in VP Racing Fuels product awards if he carried the proper decals and used the product.
Brian Shuey, who couldn’t get past the Late Model warm-up stages the past two weeks due to engine problems finally had Lady Luck on his side and got the monkey off his back to collect his fourth 25-lap BRC Late Model feature. It wasn’t an easy win for the former two-time point champion since current and defending point champion Chuck Schutz and Dave Ogin were right on his bumper in the later stages. He also earned $100 from T.P. Trailers.
Mike Lisowski overpowered rookie Derrick Smith for the lead on the 19th lap restart in a daring move for the spot in the 25-lap NASCAR Sportsman feature and later held off Joe Funk III’s bids to win his second feature in which he also received the T.P. Trailers $100 award.
WNPV-1440AM Radio of Lansdale, PA steps in to sponsor the Saturday, July 30th night of NASCAR stock car racing. Included will be the TP Trailers Modifieds, BRC Late Models and Sportsman along with the popular Blast from the Past Vintage racers. WNPV, the official area NASCAR station, has been a long time supporter of stock car racing at Grandview. Henning’s Trains of Lansdale will be making three youngsters very happy as they give away three sets of Lionel trains to lucky winners. Henning’s is the area’s authorized Lionel dealer and service station and the Henning family has fielded a Late Model stock car at the Bechtelsville clay oval for a number of years.
WNPV will give away three pair of Pocono IndyCar tickets with a value of $1,100. One set is for seating in the Terrace Club which includes pre-race pit/paddock passes plus complimentary food and beverage. Two other sets of tickets include pre-race pit/paddock passes.
Blaine Bracelin Jr. was the early leader in the Modified portion until Steve Swinehart passed him coming off turn four on the sixth lap.
The order behind Swinehart now consisted of Cozze, Bracelin Jr., Kory Fleming and Glenn Owens.
Bracelin’s strong third place run was erased after he spun in the second turn bringing out the yellow on the eighth lap. Also caught up in the mishap were Fleming and Brett Kressley since they were left with nowhere to go. Fleming continued, but Kressley was sidelined the rest of the race.
Cozze shot into the lead on the restart with Swinehart, Craig Von Dohren, Owens and Brian Houseknecht in pursuit.
VonDohren stopped with a flat right rear tire on the ninth lap for another yellow. He rejoined after a quick pit stop. Since the front row was playing cat and mouse and the others anticipated a quicker restart Bracelin Jr., VonDohren, Chris Gambler and Kyle Borror tangled along the backstretch. The next attempt was better and Cozze continued his dominance.
Cozze was dealing with lapped traffic by the 19thj lap while Swinehart, Owens, Houseknecht and Mike Gular continued to chase him down. Jeff Strunk and Gular swapped positions on the 21st lap and Strunk was on the move.
No one was able to cut into Cozze’s lead and he went on to claim his fourth career win at the 1/3-mile oval by a sizeable distance over runner-up Swinehart, for the second week in a row. Strunk crossed the line third but following the post-race tech inspection, he was disqualified for an illegal carburetor and place last. He took a huge hit in the points since he dropped to third behind Von Dohren and Gular. Third then went to Gular followed by Houseknecht, for his season best finish and Ryan Grim.
Bracelin Jr., Fleming and Cozze were the heat winners.
In Late Model action Shuey wasted no time putting the Scott Lee-owned machine at the head of the 14-car starting lineup trailed by Shawn Horning, Bryon Sipe, Steve Todorow and Dan Green.
Dave Ogin made a bold charge to move into second on the fifth lap restart needed when Green, while running fifth, spun.
Shuey was having trouble coming out of turn four and several times Ogin tried to dive underneath him, but somehow Shuey managed to stay in first.
Cory Merkel had just overtaken second when he spun in the second turn relinquishing the spot to Ogin again.
Shuey had some breathing room when Schutz began to pressure Ogin, but in no time it was a three-way battle for first.
Shuey was able to keep the lead and claimed his 19th career win with Schutz, who took over second with two laps to go right on his bumper followed by Ogin, Todorow and Sipe.
Heats were won by Shuey and Sipe.
Rookie racer Kenny Bock set the pace for six laps in the Sportsman feature before Derrick Smith, also a rookie, assumed the lead.
By the Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie mark, the order behind Smith consisted of Funk III, Bock, Mark Kemmerer and Rich Jones. Working his way to the front of the pack was Lisowski since he was third by lap 17.
Lisowski became the new leader on the 19th lap restart brought out when Jones spun between turns three and four. Funk III was now second as Smith fell to third.
Lisowski never looked back once he was first and went on to post his seventh career victory trailed by Funk III, Smith, Kemmerer and Jim Housworth.
Jack Butler, Brandon Whitmoyer and Smith were the heat winners. The consi went to Ryan Lilick.
