Godown Awarded Win After Pauch Penalized at New Egypt Speedway
New Egypt, NJ (April 26, 2014) – Defending champion Billy Pauch of Frenchtown, NJ appeared to have won for the fourth time in as many attempts Saturday in the 30 lap Modified main event at New Egypt Speedway. However Pauch’s car failed the post-race tech inspection for a body infraction when it was discovered that his Sail Panels were 2” too high. The penalty for this was Pauch being placed in last position for the event. This promoted 2012 champ Ryan Godown of Ringoes, NJ to victory lane. For Godown it is his 2nd win of the season at NES, his first since winning the opening ROC tour event.
Tim Apgar lead the field at the drop of the green, with John Stangle quickly taking up the chase from his second row starting spot. Stangle quickly drove to the lead before the first lap was completed and opened up a comfortable margin over Apgar, Gary Butler and Tad Cox. Butler and Cox each moved up a spot as the first 9 laps clicked off with Stangle in control when the first caution of the event came out. On the restart, Stangle slid up the track coming off turn four making contact with runner up Butler and slamming the wall. The resulting melee caused a chain reaction which saw Neal Williams receiving heavy damage. Butler was the new leader as Pauch was up to fourth already from 16th starting spot. Butler took command and led the next 7 laps as Pauch moved up to second. Following a lap 18 tangle between Rocco Infante and Jimmy Blewett, which resulted in black flags for both, Pauch charged by the outside into the lead. Over the final 12 laps, Pauch cruised out in front winning the event by ¾ of a straightaway over Godown for what looked like his fourth straight win. After the dust cleared in the post-race tech inspection, Godown was declared the event winner, followed by Willie Osmun second. Sammy Piazza bounced back from a spin on lap 10 to get third, followed by Butler and Darren McCaughey.
Bobby Devault won his first race of the year in the New Egypt RaceSavers 305 Sprint Car 20 lap feature. Devault started on row four and worked his way up methodically, taking the lead from leader Steph Palmai on lap 15 in lapped traffic. Palmai, who along with her sister Erika, swept the two Heat races held on for second. Mike Haggenbottom finished a close third, followed by Erika Palmai and Justin Hoffman.
The Crate Modified feature event was red flagged due to rain just before the halfway point, and will be finished at a future show. The top five when this happened was Jarrett Rozycki, Ebby Ridge, Jordan Cox, Matt Carman and Mike Carman.
The HCI/SpikeNGo Rookie Series saw another new winner as Brandon Clauss took top honors. Derek Krum finished second and Kevin Dale was third.
Next Saturday, May 3rd, it is Banner Night at New Egypt Speedway. It is also the start of Modified May Madness, where the top 24 in Modified points will be bracketed and compete against each other, with the better finish winning and moving onto the following week. $1000 in prize money along with product gift certificates will be up for grabs for the drivers at the end of May.
