Last Lap Pass Gives Christopher Bell His Third Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Victory
Bryan Hulbert - TULSA, Okla. (January 19, 2019) A finish for the ages, Kyle Larson looked to have his first Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire in hand, but with a furious run as the leaders worked into traffic, Christopher Bell found the hole on the low line entering turn one on the white flag lap to win his third Golden Driller in a row aboard the iRacing/Keith Kunz Motorsports No. 71w.
"Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be able to win the Chili Bowl. To do it three straight times is just unbelievable, but man, I don't even care about three-straight. What about that race? I don't think I've ever really been a part of a last lap race like that, so I'm just glad that thing came out in the end," stated Bell who earned Keith Kunz his eighth Golden Driller as a car owner.
"To win like I did there, it's something I'm going to cherish the rest of my life."
Taking several shots at the start, the fourth time proved the winner with Logan Seavey taking off with the race lead. Larson in tow with Justin Grant and Christopher Bell giving chase, the line began moving as the race worked past the 14th circuit.
Starting to diamond corners with traffic in the mix on Lap 17, Larson was glued to Seavey's back bumper. Getting the run on Lap 20, Larson's run to the lead came the following lap with a low side pass off the fourth turn.
Getting the run on Logan Seavey for the runner up spot working Lap 33, the caution negated the pass by Bell. Retaking the spot-on Lap 34, Bell was on Larson for the lead the following lap before the caution on Lap 35. Swapping lines top to bottom on the restart, Larson began building some distance over Bell.
Finding traffic on Lap 48, Larson's advantage came under fire as slower traffic played to Bell's advantage. Racing to the final two laps, Bell was there. Looking for room to pass, the opportunity came as the pair raced past the white flag. Tapping tires through the first two turns as Kyle slipped off the bottom, Larson and Bell came together again through the third and fourth turn with neither wanting to give in. Freeing himself from Larson, Bell was able grab the win by 0.350 seconds.
The victory puts Bell in an elite class with Kevin Swindell as the only two drivers to win three consecutive Chili Bowl titles. Swindell still stands as the only one to go four for four.
Falling back to fourth on Lap 23, Justin Grant retook the spot on Lap 36, and held on for the show position in the NOS Energy Drink No. 4a. Racing from seventh, Oklahoma's Brady Bacon crossed fourth with Zach Daum moving up three spots to round out the top-five. Involved in an earlier caution, Tyler Courtney ended up the night's Hard Charger as the Indiana shoe was able rebound from the tail to sixth. Brad Sweet in seventh was followed by C.J. Leary, Logan Seavey, and Tanner Thorson.
For the 33rd annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire, a total of 350 drivers took part in the 2019 event. The week's flip count reached 75 with the final car over being Christopher Bell. Attempting to rip victory donuts, Bell banked off the cushion and sent the car over. All drivers getting upside down were able to walk away.
The 34th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire takes place January 13-18, 2020 at the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla. Reserved Seat tickets go on sale on Wednesday, March 6, 2019. Ticket holders will receive a notice in the mail. All are encouraged to sign up for email notifications through the Chili Bowl website.

TAYLOR FULLIN IS MS. MOTORSPORTS 2019; NASCAR HALL OF FAMES DARRELL WALTRIP AND RAY EVERNHAM, NASCAR CUP ROOKIE OF YEAR CANDIDATE RYAN PREECE MEET AND GREET FANS; HIRSCHMAN, FEARN, BARD HONORED AS AARN NORTHEAST TOP WINNERS; PRESTIGIOUS JOE PRATT AWARD TO EARL AND PAM KRAUSE
OAKS, PA January 19, 2019 . . . Taylor Fullin, 21, of Danielsville, PA, was crowned Ms. Motorsports Saturday night. She earned her crown in the Aqua-Duck Water Transport-sponsored competition Saturday night on Day Two of the three-day PPB Motorsports 2019 Race Car & Trade Show at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center.
“I’m very happy and look forward to representing the Show,” said Taylor, a college student whose step brother Corey Edelman races weekly at Mahoning Valley Speedway.
“Taylor will be an outstanding Ms. Motorsports who I’m sure will represent the Show proudly and professionally,” said Len Sammons, originator of the Motorsports Show.
The winner earned $1,500 cash in addition to future poster sales earnings.
Amanda Arms, 25, of Douglassville, PA, was first runner-up, earning $500. Andrea Cap, 28, of York, PA was named second runner-up, taking $250.
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, NASCAR Hall Of Famers Darrell Waltrip and Ray Evernham signed autographs and interacted with Motorsports Show attendees as did Ryan Preece, past NASCAR Modified Touring Series champion who is a 2019 candidate for NASCAR Monster Cup Series Rookie of the Year honors.
“I had a great time,” Waltrip said. “I really enjoyed being here and would recommend this show to anyone who asks.”
“It’s always fun for Erin and me to come back to the northeast,” Evernham said upon departing the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center Saturday early afternoon. “We have a lot of friends here and it was good to see so many people. Great way to spend a weekend.”
Preece, who has been a previous Motorsports Show honoree as an AARN Winningest Asphalt Modified winner, tipped that he still intends to race Modifieds, but only as his Rookie season on the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series allows.
“Cup racing is my priority now,” Preece told Motorsports Show fans. “But my Modified car owner (Ed Partridge) will have a car ready any time I’m able to race it.”
Asphalt Touring Modified driver Matt Hirschman, New England asphalt Late Model racer Tom Fearn and Pennsylvania Micro Sprint ace Garrett Bard signed commemorative posters Saturday afternoon as three of Area Auto Racing News’ Winningest Drivers of 2018.
Prior to the Ms. Motorsports pageant, PPB Motorsports Show promoter Len Sammons presented its Joe Pratt Award of Excellence Award to Earl and Pam Krause. The husband-and-wife team are long time Motorsports staffers with Earl performing show announcing duties and ‘Press Room Pam’ running the Motorsports Show media center jointly with Earl. Earl is also a full- time editor at Area Auto Racing News.
The salutation honors the memory of the late Motorsports Show employee Joe Pratt, whose years of work greatly elevated the standard of the show.
The 34th annual PPB Motorsports Race Car & Trade Show concludes its run tomorrow, Sunday, January 20 from 11 AM through 4 PM. Featured events include the Little Ms. Motorsports competition, Kids Big Wheel races and an auction to benefit the family of the late Greg Hodnett.
Len Sammons Motorsports Productions announced dates for the 2010 Motorsports Show in the Oaks, PA Greater Philadelphia Expo Center on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 17, 18, 19, 2020.

Bryan Hulbert - TULSA, Okla. (January 18, 2019) Wheeling his NOS Energy Drink No. 4a to the pole of Friday's Vacuworx Qualifying Night, Justin Grant set a feverish pace for 25 non-stop laps to garner his third career preliminary night win in as many years at the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire.
"This one was a lot of work. You know I've been really fortunate to win some decent races and most of them have been showing up and walking in at three o'clock in the afternoon with my helmet bag and jumping in the car and just doing that and going home. This one's been ... it started with a truck, trailer, and a credit card. And a lot of 12-, 14-hour days leading up to this, a ton of work. It just very validating that we could pull off a win. Those guys believed in me probably more than I did myself. But it's like a bit of a weight lifted off ... I can do that part of it too. Hopefully, we can keep it up," commented Grant of his victory for RAMS Racing.
Grant's fourth chance at the Golden Driller on Saturday night, the California native jumped to an early advantage, but that gap was short lived as Tanner Thorson began closing just as traffic came into play on Lap 12
Using slower cars as picks while trying to navigate heavy slower traffic, the pair ducked high and low and low at both ends of the Tulsa Expo Raceway. Setting up to challenge on Lap 18, Thorson would come up short as Justin worked a lapped car in the equation. With the slower machine cleared, Thorson again set up the attack as Grant slid off the bottom of the track with five to go. Able to slam the door into the first turn, Grant was able to edge out the win by 0.168 seconds
The first-second place finish for Tanner Thorson all week, the 2019 VIROC winner will make his fifth start on Saturday night with hopes of besting his fourth-place finish of the past two years. Recovering from a spin in his Qualifier that set the No. 84x up eighth in the lineup, Chad Boat raced the final podium stop as the leaders came to the white flag. Fourth went to Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. with Tucker Klaasmeyer in fifth
Alex Schutte with Daryn Pittman in tow brought along Dave Darland in eighth. Problems in his Heat Race, Spencer Bayston changed from the C-Feature to finish ninth. The night's Hard Charger, the Indiana racer advanced 15 spots in the A-Feature and 34 positions overall. Grady Chandler made up the top 10.
Through Friday night, the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire saw 350 drivers of the 362 entries received take part in Preliminary Night competition. The Chili Bowl Flip Count stands at 49 with all drivers able to walk away.
With Saturday at the 33rd annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire is now set, the Pizza Express Pole Shuffle will determine the starting spots for the Top 10 drivers. Logan Seavey drew the No. 1 for Saturday's dash which takes place after twin D-Features. Saturday's "Alphabet Soup" will begin with Double O-Features.
Saturday, January 19, 2019 opens at 8:00 A.M. with Hot Laps on track at 9:30 A.M. The first race is slated to hit the track at 10:00 A.M. Opening Ceremonies for the day's final events, which include C, B, and A-Feature action, is scheduled for 6:00 P.M. (CT).

OAKS, PA January 18, 2019 . . . The 34th PPB Motorsports Show at Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA opened to a large and enthusiastic crowd on Friday, the first day of the three day event.
In a press conference called by Lincoln Speedway officials and conducted at 3:00 PM, Motorsports attendees learned at the same time the racing media did that Scott Gobrecht, Jerry Parrish and Mike Heffner had become involved as track investors. Don Leiby, who had been an owner of the track for 26 years, has stepped back from his involvement while Alan Kreitzer has reduced his stake.
One hour later on the Motorsport 2019 Show floor, Matt Hearn of TEO Race Cars unwrapped a new car in his booth owned by Ray Graham and dedicated for the 2019 Super DIRTcar Series. Driver Danny Johnson assisted with the unveiling, which revealed driver Anthony Perrego in the sitting in the cockpit. The two drivers will race TEO Pro Cars owned by Graham as teammates in 2019.
“Having the Motorsports Show chosen as the occasion to make such important industry announcements is a great honor,” said PPB Motorsports Show Organizer Len Sammons.
Ten drivers and car owners who were part of the history of the Reading Fairgrounds were on stage Friday night exchanging reminiscences, notably drivers Kenny Brightbill, Gary Gollub, Glenn Fitzcharles and Jimmy Horton and car owners Ronnie Kehl and Ronnie Leinbach.

Christopher Bell Fends Off Late Race Challenge For John Christner Trucking Qualifying Night Triumph
Bryan Hulbert - TULSA, Okla. (January 17, 2019) Surviving a myriad of cautions in Thursday John Christner Trucking Qualifying Night, along with a late race challenge from Shane Golobic and C.J. Leary, two-time defending Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire Champion, Christopher Bell locked his iRacing No. 71w into his seventh Saturday A-Feature in as many years.
Asked about the last few laps, Bell stated, "It was a lot busier than what I wanted them to be. Shane (Golobic) definitely made a race out of it and I hope the last four laps were a good show. It was a lot of fun ... well it was fun because I won but if I hadn't won it wouldn't have been much fun."
Bell's fifth career Preliminary Night win, the final four laps turned into a shootout between the Oklahoma native, Shane Golobic, and C.J. Leary. Taking his Keith Kunz Motorsports mount on two wheels on the final restart, the misstep was enough to allow the Elk Grove Ford No. 17c a run to the inside line going into the third and fourth turn.
Sliding across Bell's nose, Christopher turned down the track to retake the point.
Challenging again, this time Bell and Golobic found themselves under fire with the Valvoline No. 55v of C.J. Leary nearly going to the point. Unable to hold, Leary battled close with Shane Golobic but neither were able to build the run needed to keep pace as Bell took the checkered flag 0.555 seconds to the good.
"Shane was able to sneak underneath me in three. It got so slick off two and then all the way really until you got to pretty much four you were just kind of sitting there waiting on it and I knew that opening up my entry like that I was very vulnerable," commented Bell.
"I kept hitting the bottom off (turn) two on the restarts and going straight to the top, so I didn't really want to change what I was doing. I went down there, and I don't know if my tire was low or I got too much berm but I biked up and it allowed him to stay with me a little bit better and pull the trigger on me."
Shane Golobic's seventh ticket to the A-Feature since 2010, the California shoe was able to pull away from Leary by just under a half second. Finishing fourth was Danny Stratton with Josh Most making the very best of restarts and attrition to pick up 17 positions to pick up Hard Charger honors. Advancing 12 positions, Austin Brown crossed sixth.
Nearly clearing the turn one fence in his Heat Race, 2005 Chili Bowl Champion, Tracy Hines, was relegated to the 11th starting spot in the second C-Feature. Charging through the C and B-Features, the Wilke-Pak No. 11 advanced position 36 times to finish seventh. Tiptoeing his way through the field, Casey Shuman made up six positions with Kyle Cummins rebounding from a late race caution to finish ninth. Despite fighting mechanical issues throughout the A-Feature, cautions brought Andrew Felker back into the mix for a top ten finish.
Four nights down with two to go, the 33rd annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire has had 276 drivers have check-in so far with 73 taking part in Thursday's John Christner Trucking Qualifying Night. Currently, the Chili Bowl Flip Count stands at 41. All drivers have been able to walk away.
The 33rd Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire continues Friday, January 18, 2019, with Vacuworx Qualifying Night. A roster of 75 drivers is expected to be on hand for the final prelim night. The River Spirit Expo Center will open at 9:00 A.M. with Pit Pass sales starting at 11:00 A.M.
