OPENING A DREAM: Brent Marks wins the National Open at Williams Grove Speedway
Marks pockets $65,000 for winning the National Open, his first win of the season
MECHANICSBURG, PA – Oct. 5, 2019 – Williams Grove Speedway announcer Bruce Ellis held up a checkered flag to Brent Marks.
“Do you want to read what that says?” he asked the Myerstown, Pa. driver.
Marks grabbed the flag and held it eye level. Fixated on the printed logo he earnestly said, “Williams Grove National Open winner.”
“That’s you,” Ellis replied.
Marks won the 57th Champion Racing Oil National Open at Williams Grove Speedway Saturday night – his first win of the season – and pocketed the $65,000 prize.
How did he feel after Ellis proclaimed him the 2019 victor?
“I have no idea,” Marks said with a smile. “This is amazing. I’ve been wanting to win this race for a very long time. I grew up here in the infield. This is where I fell in love with Sprint Car racing. This is awesome.”
Marks described his 2019 season as frustrating. He failed to make four Features throughout the year and has said he felt like he let four potential wins slip through his fingers. Not Saturday night. Not in his home state in front of friends, family and local fans.
He showcased his determination for atonement during the final Drydene Heat race of the night. He went from fourth to second in one lap on a restart and put himself in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash.
He then drew the pole for the second Dash of the night and went on to win it – placing him on the outside pole for the 40-lap World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Feature.
At the start of the National Open, Marks and polesitter Brian Brown drag raced down the front stretch toward turn one. Brown launched ahead of Marks into the corner to hold the lead, but before the two drivers could continue their duel down the backstretch a caution came out.
When it came time to stomp the throttle again, Marks acted quicker than Brown. He rocketed ahead of the FVP/Casey’s General Stores No. 21 and claimed the lead before the first turn. He led two laps before yellow lights flashed around the speed, again.
Marks chose the inside line on the restart and found himself in the same situation Brown did two laps earlier. Brown got the jump on Marks off turn four and charged ahead of him to reclaim the lead. He then began to extend his lead over Marks every lap.
On Lap nine, Brown lost traction in turn one and fought to keep his car pointed straight off turn two. His slip allowed Marks to reel him in. Daryn Pittman, in third, was also closing in on them both.
Three laps later Marks carried the momentum of a strong run off turn four to catch Brown before turn one. When they entered the turn, Marks dove underneath Brown and cleared him for the lead. Brown then lost second to Pittman the next corner.
Marks’ lead was short lived again with the caution coming out on Lap 14. After losing the lead to Brown on the last restart by starting on the bottom, Marks chose the high side for his next attempt. However, it didn’t help. Pittman bested him on the start and took the lead down the front stretch.
However, before the lap was completed a caution came out for several cars getting together in turn three – including 2018 National Open winner Lance Dewease, who could not continue. The race was then put under an Open Red, allowing teams to fuel their cars.
Marks was ready for Pittman on the restart. He rocketed ahead of the field, pulling away by half of a second when he reached the backstretch.
While Marks pulled away with the lead, Brown, Donny Schatz and Aaron Reutzel brawled for third. The trio used up the entire track for several laps trying to pass each other. Eventually Schatz and Reutzel made their way by Brown to move into third and fourth, respectively.
Heavy lap traffic became an issue for Marks by the halfway point of the Feature. Pittman closed in. And Schatz and Reutzel closed in on Pittman. A blanket could have covered the top-four with 20 laps to go.
Flashbacks of being held up in lap traffic and losing the win at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway in June projected in Marks’ head. However, that wasn’t going to be the case this time. He learned. He wasn’t going to let another win slip away.
“I tried to play that whole race as smart as I could,” Marks said. “Tried to drive like a veteran and not get over my head. Just be super patient. Because I lost that race earlier in the year at Nashville. Kind of the same situation, you know running the bottom there with lap cars and I felt like I needed to get by them, made a mistake and lost the lead. I made sure I didn’t want to do that tonight.”
His patience with lap cars turned into car lengths gained on Pittman. Pressure from behind faded as the final laps approached. Marks was on his way to his fourth career World of Outlaws win.
Then, a caution. Paul McMahan came to a stop in turn one with a flat tire. Marks had to make two more perfect laps before he could see the checkered flag.
Pittman tried to get a run around the high side of turns one and two, but Marks was too strong on the bottom. By the time the Pennsylvanian finally saw the checkered flag, he had a 1.4 second lead over Pittman. Schatz finished third for the second night in-a-row at the speedway.
The runner-up finish for Pittman was his fifth time finishing second at the National Open. He said he would trade just about any of his win for a National Open win. He thought he might win before the caution came out when he took the lead on the restart. However, he was still pleased with his team’s overall performance – finishing second after starting sixth.
“We had a really good Roth Motorsports car for the weekend,” Pittman said. “We kept fine tuning on it, didn’t make any wholesale changes and continued to get better and better.”
For the second night in-a-row Schatz took a big chunk out of Brad Sweet’s points lead over him – with Sweet finishing ninth. Schatz is now 14 points behind Sweet. David Gravel, who finished fifth, has also crept his way into the points battle, now 88 points behind Sweet with eight races to go.
Reutzel won the National Open rookie award – finishing fourth – and Brian Montieth earned the KSE Hard Charger award with a stellar performance of charging from 26th to eighth.
Marks was the biggest winner in several ways. He celebrated the biggest win in his World Outlaws career, so far, with his family, friends and local fans and earned a large payday for his self-owned Brent Marks Racing team.
“What does it pay, sixty-five (thousand)?” Marks asked Ellis in Victory Lane.
“Sixty-five,” Ellis confirmed.
“That means everything,” Marks said after the race. “That sure as hell gets us through the winter.”

CARRICK CRUISES TO THIRD-CAREER WIN AT JACKSONVILLE

JACKSONVILLE, ILL. (October 6, 2019) - Going wire-to-wire in Saturday's 30-lap main event at Jacksonville Speedway, Tanner Carrick of Lincoln, Calif. was just unstoppable in the green-to-checkered run. Aboard the Keith Kunz-Curb Agajanian Motorsports, Walker Filters, Bullet/Toyota No. 71K, Carrick won his third career POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League feature and the first of his 2019 campaign.
Surviving a pair of rain delays before the feature hit the track, it was a constant guessing game on Saturday as Mother Nature tried and tried again to thwart the Jacksonville Speedway season finale. A steady afternoon cell nearly ended it all before pill draw started, and then a sudden shower ahead of the main events created a second brief stoppage.
Earning PAC Racing Springs High Point Man honors, Carrick claimed the pole position of the main event following an excitable fifth-to-first charge in heat race action. Joined to his outside by Zach Duam of Pocahontas, Ill., the duo brought the 22-car feature field to life and Carrick immediately shot to the point.
On a fast, heavy and hammer down quarter-mile surface, Carrick was able to quickly extend his advantage before Rico Abreu of St. Helena, Calif. made his way by Daum for the second spot on lap eight. Trailing by 2.1 seconds, Abreu's charge to Carrick's tail waited until the final ten laps, when he brought the heat through lap traffic.
Finding another gear in the closing laps, Abreu all of a sudden chopped into Carrick's lead left and right aboard the Safelite Auto Repair No. 97. Giving the fans some late-race excitement, Abreu was able to approach Carrick's No. 71K on the final circuit but fell just one or two corners short of being able to make a bid for the win.
In the end, Tanner Carrick of Lincoln, Calif. controlled all 30 laps aboard the Keith Kunz-Curb Agajanian Motorsports, Walker Filters, Bullet/Toyota No. 71K. His Jacksonville Speedway score marks his first POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League win of 2019 and the third of his career.
Rico Abreu settled for runner-up honors for the second-straight night while Zach Daum also rounded out the podium on Saturday just like he did on Friday. Jesse Colwell lost 10 points off his championship lead as he finished in fourth with Tucker Klaasmeyer right behind him in the fifth spot.
Also finishing inside the top ten was Holley Hollan in sixth, Cannon McIntosh in seventh, Logan Seavey in eighth, Daison Pursley in ninth and Andrew Layser in tenth.
The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League moves to Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill. on Friday, October 11 followed by a Saturday, October 12 stop at Southern Illinois Raceway in Marion, Ill.

REED TAKES THIRD WALL MODIFIED TITLE; MAURIELLO WINNER SATURDAY
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Veteran All American Auto Group Modified stock car driver Steven Reed of Jackson claimed the Modified driving title at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night while Brick's Eric Mauriello won the final 40-lap main event of the regular season. The championship was Reed's career third while the victory was Mauriello's fifth of the campaign.
Andrew Krause of Holmdel charged to the lead in the early going and as the race wore on seemed to be on his way to his first win of the campaign. Krause's luck turned sour, just as it had often times this season, on lap 36 when his car swerved exiting turn two, the victim of a reported broken rear axle. Eddie McCarthy of Pt. Pleasant, who had chased Krause most of the way, then took over the top spot but Mauriello, who had raced from back in the pack, slipped into the lead on a restart to grab the win.
McCarthy, Derek Hopkinson of Toms River and Mayetta's Tyler Truex wrapped up the top four. Reed's fifth place finish cemented the title.
“This car has been great all season,” Mauriello said. “I have to thank Steve Ferarra and the entire team for letting me be a part of it.”
“I wanted to win the race tonight for my daughter's birthday,” Reed said to the large Champion's Night crowd. “I do have to thank my family, my crew and my sponsors for all they have done for me. It has been a great season and this is a special championship.”
Bryan O'Shea of Neptune City raced to his second straight win in the O'Shea's Auto Repair Factory Stock 25-lapper. Elliot Wohl of Beachwood stayed on his bumper most of the way and became the 2019 Driving Champion. Defending Champion Mike Montano of Freeport, N.Y. was third and Jackson's Shanon Mongeau and Scott Riggleman of Manchester completed the top five.
Invader Richie Davidowitz of Center Moriches, N.Y. won the 25-lapper for the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars as Kevin Nowak of Medford, N.Y. was the runner-up. Sean Verwys of East Stroudsburg, Pa. crossed the finish line third to win the season-long driving crown, while Mason Magee of North East, Md. And Howell's Rob Silver completed the top five.
Brick's Ronnie Mullen won the 25-lapper for the Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks while Alonzo Morales of Mt. Ephraim and Neil Rutt III of Edison were second and third. That finish earned Rutt the driving title. Sal Liguori of Hazlet and Cookstown's Nicole Razzano were fourth and fifth.
Manchester's Shanon Mongeau won his second straight Center State Engineering Sportsman 25-lapper over a top five of Howell's Eric Lane, Jarret DiGiantomasso of Jackson, Jake Nelke of Manahawkin and Michael Rising of Little Egg Harbor. Jackson's Kyle Scisco crossed the line sixth to clinch of the driving title.
Mongeau also took the win in the 25-lapper for the Mike's Performance Center Limited Late Models while second place finisher Chris Silvestri of Hazlet wrapped up his first ever driving title. Mike Tillett of Beachwood, Jim Moorman of Brooklawn and Jackson's Greg Gastelu were third through fifth.
Geoffrey Sutton won the 25-lapper for the visiting Three Quarter Midgets.
Wall Stadium Speedway will be dark this Saturday (Oct. 12) before action resumes on Saturday (Oct. 19) afternoon with the running of the “Spooky Spectacular.” The Modifieds will headline this afternoon event in a 75-lap main event, while the Factory Stocks, 4 Cylinder Stocks and the Legend Cars will all compete in 25-lap main events. Grandstand gates open at 11:00 a.m., qualifying begins at 1:40 p.m. and features start at 3:00 p.m. on October 19.
The season-ending “Turkey Derby” will then be contested on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend. More information on all events is available at www.wallspeedwayracing.com.

PAUCH AND HOUSWORTH ARE VICTORIOUS AT NEW EGYPT SPEEDWAY’S LEGENDS OF THE FALL
New Egypt, NJ (October 6, 2019) – At New Egypt Speedway’s Legends of the Fall, Billy Pauch Jr. topped the field of Modifieds in the 75-lap feature. Jim Housworth took top honors in the Crate vs. Sportsman event.
As the 75-lap Modified feature got underway, polesitter Briggs Danner grabbed the lead with Brandon Grosso, Andy Bachetti, Jimmy Horton and Billy Pauch Jr. next in line. On the fourth circuit, Grosso gained the top spot with Bachetti advancing into second and Danner dropping back to third. Pauch Jr., the 2019 Modified champion at New Egypt Speedway, was on the march forward as he motored into third behind Grosso and Bachetti with six tours recorded. Following a lap nine caution, Grosso was still in front with Bachetti, Pauch Jr., Horton and Duane Howard completing the top five. Over the next few laps, Howard and David VanHorn waged a good battle for fifth. VanHorn took over the position on lap fourteen just prior to an appearance of the red flag for a flare-up on PJ Oliver’s ride. On the ensuing restart, Grosso held off Bachetti with Pauch Jr. in third. Bachetti remained in hot pursuit and eventually was able to slip by Grosso on the eighteenth revolution. By lap twenty, Bachetti was pulling away as Pauch Jr. was tracking down Grosso. Three circuits later, Pauch Jr. took over the runner up spot from Grosso just before Kevin Sockriter’s spin brought out the yellow flag. Under this caution period, Bachetti dropped out the race with a mechanical issue. With Bachetti retired from the contest, Pauch Jr. inherited the lead on the twenty-fourth tour. After a pair cautions, Pauch Jr. was still in charge on lap twenty-seven with Grosso in second and fourteenth place starting Richie Pratt Jr. in third. On lap thirty-seven, a broken radiator hose forced Pratt Jr. out of the race as VanHorn advanced into third with Howard in fourth, and Danny Bouc in fifth. Following a fuel stop on the thirty-eighth circuit and a multi-car tangle on lap forty, Pauch Jr. was still pacing the field over Grosso, VanHorn, Howard and Bouc. Pauch Jr. began to pull to away from his rivals but his comfortable margin vanished due to a slowing Kevin Sockriter on lap forty-nine. When action resumed, Pauch Jr. held off Grosso as Howard sped past VanHorn to take third. On lap fifty-three, VanHorn lost another position as Bouc sped into fourth. Two tours later, racing came to a pause as Jimmy Horton’s ride slowed on the dirt oval. When the competition resumed, Pauch Jr. maintained his edge with Howard charging past Grosso for second and VanHorn taking over fourth from Bouc. Over the final nineteen circuits, Pauch Jr. would only be slowed down by a pair of caution flags as he comfortably won his sixth feature of the season and the twenty-seventh Modified victory of his career. This was the second year in the row that Pauch Jr. collected the $7500 Legends of the Fall event. With Howard in second, Grosso finished third. VanHorn was fourth and Bouc came home in fifth. The Modified heats were captured by Brandon Grosso, Andy Bachetti, Danny Bouc and David VanHorn. Danny Creeden and Ryan Simmons won the consolation races.
In the 25-lap Crate vs. Sportsman feature, Jim Housworth led every step of the way to collect his second win of the year. Housworth, who finished second in the 2019 Hammer Sportsman title chase at New Egypt Speedway, was able to hold off Ryan Heim on a last lap restart to secure the victory. Behind Heim, ninth place starting Will Dupree completed the race in third. Joe Toth came from twelfth to finish in fourth. Brandon Edgar completed the top five after starting the contest in fourteenth. The winners in the qualifying events were Art Liedl, Jim Housworth and JT Trstensky.
