Wayne Johnson Prevails In Sage Fruit Ultimate Challenge With The Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series

Bryan Hulbert - OSKALOOSA, Iowa. (August 6, 2019) Notching his 54th career victory with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network, Oklahoma's Wayne Johnson topped Tuesday's Sage Fruit Ultimate Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway.
"First of all, I know a lot of you have heard about my little buddy, Grady Chandler. This race is for him. That Polish Victory Lap was for him...Get well buddy, we're praying for you," stated Johnson in Victory Lane.

Winner Wayne Johnson (ASCS Photo)

Taking his place in seventh for the 25-lap SawBlade.com A-Feature, Johnson advanced to fifth on the grid after the initial start was nullified when Jon Agan and Shawn Murray flipped wildly down the back straightaway. Both drivers were unharmed. Rolling to the runner-up spot as the field completed the fourth circuit, Johnson trailed California's, Willie Croft.

Moving out on the field in the early laps, the driver of the Outlaw Wings No. 2c started moving his line around. Picking up steam on the Holley Smokes BBQ No. 29, Johnson pulled a nearly half straightaway disadvantage to a handful of car lengths as the pair reached Lap 10.

Working the top shelf of the Southern Iowa Speedway as Croft rolled the hub, the pair went head to head for the lead on Lap 12. Diving under the No. 29 through turns one and two, Croft answered the pass down the back straightaway; turning under Wayne retake the point.

Coming after Croft again a lap later, Johnson adjusted his line and raced back into the lead off the fourth turn. Caution working Lap 16, that quickly turned to red as Matt Covington caught fire, the field went under an open red.

On the race for the lead, Johnson stated, "We had a really good car and just needed to take my time. I just about crashed the thing coming off turn two trying to hard and I hit those damn tires they have there. After that, I just told myself to calm down a little bit...I don't know what he [Croft] did there off of two. Looked like he just got really loose and I had a big run. That was my time. I don't know how far I cleared him, but my hats off to Slippy, John, Kenny, and the Chick Magnet. They had this thing on a rail."

With adjustments made, the field refired with Wayne glued to the bottom of the track at the wave of the green. Leaving Croft to deal with the charging No. 15h of Sam Hafertepe, Jr. the Hills Racing entry grabbed second on Lap 18. The only driver at the front of the field to vacate the preferred low groove in turns three and four, Hafertepe was making up ground quickly on Johnson. Pulling to within six car lengths of the No, 2c at one point, that was as close as Sam would get as the checkered flag greeted the wily veteran 0.863 seconds before Hafertepe.

Willie Croft held on for third with Tucker Doughty posting his first career top-five finish with the series with a fourth-place run. Moving up from 12th, Scott Bogucki completed the night's top five for the eighth time this season. Blake Hahn crossed sixth with Dusty Zomer in tow after starting 11th. Winning the night BMRS B-Feature, Mason Daniel moved through the field from 17th to finish eighth. John Carney II was ninth with Jack Dover in tenth.

A field of 34 drivers converged on the Sage Fruit Ultimate Challenge with SCE Gaskets Heat Race wins going to Tucker Doughty, Shawn Murray, Willie Croft, and Blake Hahn. The BMRS B-Feature went to Mason Daniel. Two drivers, Robbie Price and Jordon Mallett, utilized Provisionals.

BACON GOES TAILBACK, WINS ULTIMATE CHALLENGE FROM 26TH

OSKALOOSA, IOWA (August 6, 2019) - Accepting the RAMS Racing To-The-Tail Challenge, Brady Bacon of Broken Arrow, Okla. thrilled a capacity crowd at Southern Iowa Speedway on Tuesday night. Driving from 26th-to-1st in only 13 laps, Bacon was unstoppable aboard the Fatheadz Eyewear No. 99, banking upwards of $6,000 for his triumph in the Sage Fruit Ultimate Challenge with the POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League.

Welcoming 28 entries for the one-off appearance at the Oskaloosa, Iowa half-mile, Tuesday's show began as Riley Kreisel, Brady Bacon and Kevin Thomas Jr. topped heat race wins. Inviting the top six in passing points to the LRB, Inc. Dash, Bacon outdueled Thomas to win the four-lapper.

Stopping Bacon and Thomas on the front stretch in front of the fans, the crowd went wild as the RAMS Racing To-The-Tail Challenge was presented. After a little deliberation, Bacon agreed to terms, relinquished the pole and moved to start 26th with extra money on the line. After the standing-room only grandstands went bonkers, Ultimate Challenge promoter Terry McCarl stepped in to offer the challenge to Kevin Thomas Jr. as well, who promptly accepted it also and sent them into another frenzy.

While Zach Daum of Pocahontas, Ill. and Isaac Chapple of Wilkinson, Ind. led the 25-lapper to the green flag, all eyes were glued to Bacon and KTJ in the 13th row. Chapple paced the opening circuit over Daum as Bacon and KTJ both made massive moves as they tested the high side and advanced +10 spots in the first four corners.

The only stoppage of the race came after the first lap as Chapple led Daum, Davis, Parkinson and Landon Simon, while KTJ had worked to 14th with Bacon in 16th. Daum began to apply pressure for the lead as both KTJ and Bacon moved into the top ten. Finessing the cushion, Bacon stormed around the outside of KTJ on lap six and ensued to slide Parkinson to take over the fifth spot, making it a 26th-to-5th charge in just six laps.

Continuing to march forward, Bacon found himself trailing Chapple and Daum as they continued to battle for the lead. By the 13th circuit, Bacon maneuvered by both of them and moved his No. 99 into the race lead after starting 26th. Running away with a dominating performance in the second half, Bacon checked out while the battle for third heated up between Chapple, Simon, Davis, Kreisel and Thomas.

In the end, there was no stopping "The Macho Man" Brady Bacon on this night. After taking the lead from 26th in 13 laps, the Broken Arrow, Okla. native pulled away in the latter stages to complete the RAMS Racing To-The-Tail Challenge. His fifth-career POWRi Lucas Oil WAR Sprint League victory, Tuesday's triumph was Bacon's first in the Sage Fruit Ultimate Challenge as he claimed the championship belt.

Following Bacon to the line was Zach Daum in second and Isaac Chapple in third with podium results. Rounding out the top ten was Landon Simon in fourth, Riley Kreisel in fifth, Kevin Thomas Jr. in sixth-from-25th, Mitchell Davis in seventh, Kory Schudy in eighth, Don Droud Jr. in ninth and Korey Weyant in tenth.

BECHTELSVILLE, PA August 7, 2019 . . . When the 49th annual Forrest Rogers Memorial NASCAR 358 Modified race is presented at Grandview Speedway this Saturday, August 10, ten time NASCAR track champion Craig Von Dohren will be a big favorite to win. The Oley, PA racer, a winner of more than 100 feature races at Grandview, is looking to win his ninth Rogers Memorial. His first win goes back to 1986.

With $10,000 up for grabs for the winner, the competition for the coveted classic win will be keen to say the least.

Last year Ray Swinehart, one of the oldest competitors, took the win. Saturday night he will be looking for his fifth win.

Another ten time track champion, Jeff Strunk, will be looking to win his third Rogers Classic. Duane Howard, locked in a battle for the T.P.Trailers NASCAR track title, is looking for a third win. Veteran racer Meme DeSantis is a two time winner as is Billy Pauch. Green Lane, PA’s Kevin Hirthler has won once.

And if you go way back in the record books you will find that Freddie Rahmer, who finished his career as one of the nation’s top Sprint car racers, won four Forrest Rogers Memorials before moving on to the Sprints.

There are a number of Saturday night Modified racers that have what it takes to win the Classic including Doug Manmiller, Brett Kressley, Hall of Famer Frank Cozze, Rick Laubach, Tim Buckwalter, Jared Umbenhauer and others. And who knows there just might be a visitor come in and steal it all away from the regulars. It has happened before with Danny Johnson and Ryan Godown claiming the big check.

So Saturday night at Grandview Speedway the action will be super exciting as more than 40 Modified racers are expected to be on hand to try to take home the $10,000 first place money.

And the always exciting T.P.Truck Equipment Sportsman will be in action with the racing producing a new feature winner just about every Saturday night.

Current point standings show Duane Howard 3463 points has a slight edge over Craig Von Dohren with 3416 counters in the Modifieds and Brad Brightbill continues to be the pacesetter in the Sportsman with 2922 points as they head toward the Forrest Rogers Memorial Night of racing.

Sitting third in the NASCAR 358 Modified standings is Brett Kressley with 3142 points followed, in the top five, by Doug Manmiller at 3080 and Rick Laubach with 3001 points. In the NASCAR Sportsman Brad Grim has 2724 points to hold down second spot. Third is former champion Brian Hirthler with 2694 tallies. Kyle Lilick has earned 2658 points while Saturday night feature winner Jack Butler is fifth with 2377 points.

Free backpacks, just in time for school openings, courtesy of Craig Whitmoyer and Snyder Web Design, will be given away at the Rogers Memorial. Kids must pick up their free tickets Saturday night at the main entrance, right on up until heat races are completed, with five boys and five girls having their lucky tickets drawn at intermission to win the backpacks.

In addition to the backpacks school kits and activity books, all part of the KIDS DRIVE NASCAR KIT, will be given away at the main gate while supplies last.

Freedom 76 Lap Sponsorships, just $20, are available from Tina Rogers or Tommy Kramer at the track. Lap sponsorships and heat race sponsorships ($200) are available through Ernie Saxton at 267.934.7286 or mail a check to cover the cost of laps and/or sponsorship of a heat race to Grandview Speedway, 87 Wilt Road, Bechtelsville, PA 19505.

SWANSON TO MAKE 100TH SILVER CROWN START AT SALEM

By: Richie Murray - USAC Media

Salem, Indiana (August 6, 2019).........Kody Swanson is just a single start away from reaching a milestone mark in his racing career as the USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series heads into the August 10 Joe James/Pat O'Connor Memorial at Indiana's Salem Speedway this Saturday.

The Kingsburg, Calif. native stands at 99 career USAC Silver Crown starts, and with one more, would join the exclusive 100 start club for the series, a mark achieved by only 18 previous drivers: Dave Darland (201 starts), Russ Gamester & Brian Tyler (197), Jerry Coons, Jr. (175), Tracy Hines (172), Jack Hewitt (163), Johnny Parsons (151), Tony Elliott (147), Eric Gordon (136), George Snider (128), Gary Hieber (125), Chuck Gurney (114), Bud Kaeding & Jimmy Sills (113), Dave Steele (111), John Heydenreich (104), A.J. Fike (102) and Larry Rice (100).

It's safe to say that no driver has accomplished more in those his first 100 than Swanson has. In that span, he's won the pole position a record 28 times, reached victory lane on an all-time best 27 occasions and finished as the runner-up 20 times, giving him a remarkable mark of top-two finishes in 47 of his 99 starts thus far, just a tick under 50 percent!

He's also added four Silver Crown driver titles (2014-15-17-18) and helped his team to five consecutive car owner championships in the past five years, another unprecedented mark that he's added to his resume.

Salem Speedway has been the home of a slew of Swanson milestones since the Silver Crown series began revisiting the .555-mile high banks in the summer of 2016. That year, Swanson broke Rich Vogler's long-standing one-lap track record in a Champ Car at Salem en route to victory. The following year in 2017, his 18th career victory moved him into second all-time on Silver Crown's win list. In 2018, the ante was upped as Swanson became the series' winningest driver following his Salem triumph, the 24th of his career.

We might also mention that Swanson's Salem win a year ago was his fifth-straight at the time, another record for the books, if you're keeping track at home.

This year, Swanson has tacked even more on to his resume with three victories (Memphis, Toledo & Madison), plus a second-place run at Williams Grove, and leads the series points entering Saturday's Joe James/Pat O'Connor Memorial where he aims to join another exclusive club, as a winner of the prestigious event for the fourth-straight year, something only accomplished once before, by the great Pancho Carter between 1974 and 1977.

It's a far cry from his first credited Silver Crown start at Iowa Speedway in 2008 where he suffered mechanical trouble, finishing last and the box score reading "0 laps competed." Since that time, Swanson has rewritten seemingly every stat in the record books or reached what once seemed like a distant dream that's now become a reality. For Swanson, another of those realities awaits this Saturday.

Silver Crown pits open at 1pm Eastern on Saturday, August 10. Spectator gates open at 3pm, vintage car warm-ups at 3pm, Silver Crown drivers meeting at 3:15pm, stock car practice from 3:30-3:50pm, first Silver Crown practice from 3:55-4:25pm, stock car practice from 4:30pm-4:45pm, final Silver Crown practice from 4:50-5:20pm, Qualifying at 5:45pm, opening ceremonies at 6:55pm followed by stock car and Silver Crown main events.

Advance adult general admission tickets are $23 for adults/teens and $5 for ages 7-12. Advance reserved tickets are $28.

Saturday's prestigious event can be watched LIVE and on-demand on FloRacing, listened to via live audio on the USAC app as well as live timing and scoring on both the USAC app and the Race-Monitor app.
