Hamlin, PA- Hamlin Speedway Offers Up Another Geat Night Of Racing
By: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media

The Hamlin Speedway was once again the focal point of racing activity last evening in the Pocono Mountains as the speedway hosted it's regular divisions and was buffered by the addition of the X'Cel Modified division. Once again the Smith Fanily showed just how to get things done with an exciting show that emphasized the hard work and dedication all of the competitors has placed into their racing programs. facility. The tremendous racing season thus far in 2019 and the loyal fan base and talented roster of driving stars who converge at the speedway are appreciative of all of the hard work and determination that goes into preparing an exciting and fun-filled evening of racing. The racing action at the 1/5th mile clay-cushioned facility has been over the top with many outstanding driving personalities carving out their own claim to fame in weekly competition for age groups from 8 to 60 plus. Last night some new winners graced victory circle and the fans were very appreciative of the racing action the drivers put on and the show of shows down on the speedway grounds. The racing was completed by 10:57 in the evening.

The 2019 season is now twelve weeks old and many special events have been already been completed but the heart of the racing schedule is right now and the Smith Family worked hard to make it happen. Heading up the headlines for last evening’s show include Kasey Hufcut, who won the Junior Slingshot event in a wire to wire triumph. The Supers returned to action and Dale Kober blasted to another win at the speedway. Brandon Nicholas captured his first ever win in the JPA Masonry Rookie Wingless event. "The Nickel Man" Joel Smith won over a very stout field in the JPA Masonry Regular 600 Sprint main event. Jeff Hineline captured the feature win in the Stage One division for the Hampton RV & Trailer Sales Stage One Modifieds. Travis Fichter captured the X'Cel Modified win with a strong run

Joel Smith grabbed the lead at the start of the JPA Masonry event and just as quickly had to shut down due to a track melee. On the restart, Zack Weisenfluh jumped the restart and led the next three laps until another altercation slowed things down. On the next restart, Smith quickly regained control of the event and quickly raced away from the field of hot rods behind him. Smith hustled out to a nice-sized lead over Zack Weisenfluh. Track champion "The Travelin Man" Mick D'Agostino, had problems at the start of the event and dropped back a few positions but once he settled in he was the fastest car on the speedway. Going topside, he quickly became the pursuer and made some nice quality moves to get himself back up front. Smith was in command all of the way and won the event with Weisenfluh in the runner-up role and D'Agostino rebounding for a third place finish. Paul Richards hustled to fourth with Joe Smith rounding out the top five. The second five showed Noah Zielinksi, Michael Nolf, Mack Brink, Chad Sandt and Cody Smith.

In the Super Slinger action, Dale Kober ran away and hid to go on and claim another win at the speedway. Early leader Paul Ennes would settle for second place and Wes Hearn would finish in the third place. Wally Bell would finish fourth and newcomer Jermey Hoffman would round out the field.

In the JPA Masonry Rookie 600 event, Brandson Nicholas grabbed the lead at the start and hit his marks on every lap to become a first time visitor to victory lane and a very happy guy to boot. Newcomer Shjon Dove was close in second place with Tony Parlanti third, The returning Jacob Nemeth was fourth and Kyle Ferrucci fifth in this one. Richie Maguire headed up the next spot with Michael Nolf, Cody Powell, Carmen Leggio Sr, and Morgan Rochelle following.

The Amantea Real Estate Junior Slingshot event found Kasey Hufcut with the hot hand as the young driver outhustled RJ Sherman and walked away with the win. Sherman took up pursuit and finsihed second while Aidan Donaldson was third, Pauly Hartwig hung on for fourth place and Charlene Benz hustled hard to frinish fifth. Doug Smith hustled up to sixth place at the end with Aidan Elliot, Chase Zimmer, Isabella Van Orden, and Kylie Hendricks following.

In the event for the Stage One Modifieds, Jeff Hineline outhustled the field at the start and built up a huge lead as the checkered flag was unfurled. JoelSmith debuted a brand spanking new car and was second with it. Adam Buchel worked hard for third place and Tanner VanDohren and Amanda Buchel completed the top five. Anthony Chrobak finished in sixth with Joel Price, Michael Samony, the returning Lawson Scerencits and Evan Civick following.

In the All Star Slingshot encounter, pole sitter Wally Bell blasted into the lead at the start of the event and held off all of the competition for thriteen laps until Shelby McLaughlin took a run at him and got underneath him to take over the lead and go on to win the event. James Benz was steady all of the way in securing runner-up honors. Amber Baccaligni hustled hard to finish in third place and Scott Neary was fourth and Brian Smith was fifth. Wes Hearn continued his steady work for sixth place, with Ashley Kober, a fading Wally Bell, Paul Ennes and Joey Kalafut.

Travis Fichter showed everyone just how to negotiate the Hamlin clay last evening as he outgunned Kevin VanValkenburg at the start and kpet his race car glued to the top of the speedway throughout in gaining the victory. Aaron Bowes hustled through the field to claim runner-up honors while Jeff Sechrist, VanValkeburg and Ray Gradwell completed the top five. Grant Schibilia headed up the second five with Zane Roth, Trent Warner, Ty Hoke, and Shawna Schibilia following.

Pearl Jams:

The track was racy from start to finish and Track Promoter Randy Smith continued to work on the speedway as necessary for the activity on the speedway was non-stop but very racy throughout. Smith had an impeccable track ready for all of the racing teams

Brian Smith, and James Benz captured the heat wins for the All Star Slingshots. The Junior Slingshot heats went to RJ Sherman and Kasey Hufcut. The Stage One Modified heats found Tanner VanDohren and Joel Smith being victorious. JPA Masonry Wingless heats were claimed by Zack Weisenfluh and Joel Smith. Paul Ennes captured the heat win for the Supers. The JPA Masonry Rookie 600 Sprints ran two heats and Shjon Dove and Michael Nolf were the winners. Jeff Sechrist and Josh Pepe captured the heat wins for the X'Cel Modifieds.

The "Rocket" Ronnie Dunstan was on hand last night. Dunstan up from Florida with his girlfriend Glenna Henry and really enjoyed the show. Bobby Stull was in-house last evening as well as Mahoning races were called off earlier in the day.

INVINCIBLE IRONMAN: Sheldon Haudenschild blows away competition at Ironman 55
Haudenschild earns $20k and Ironman title with dominating performance at Federated Auto Parts Raceway

PEVELY, MO – Aug. 3, 2019 – Ironman; a title earned, not given.

Earned with the display of great strength. Earned with the display of great endurance. And earned with the display of great will power.

Sheldon Haudenschild displayed all three traits during Saturday's World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Ironman 55 event at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55.

On the 70-degree night with 90% humidity, Haudenschild led 45 of the 55 laps in the caution free Feature, sprinted to the finish with an unprecedented 10.3 second lead over runner-up Donny Schatz and lapped up to fifth-place – including Series points leader and Friday night’s winner at the raceway Brad Sweet.

“That right there was just a great car, me feeling comfortable and having a lot of fun,” Haudenschild said.

The fun started for the Wooster, Ohio-native and his Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing team Friday night with a runner-up finish to Sweet in the Night Before the Ironman 35-lap event. Haudenschild then backed up his performance with a second-place finish in his Drydene Heat race, coming to the finish side-by-side with Daryn Pittman. He then charged from fifth to the win in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash – a victory he initially didn’t want.

“I wanted to win the Heat race to get a better draw,” Haudenschild said. “Once I didn’t win the Heat my mindset kind of changed starting in the back of that Dash. I really didn’t want to win the Dash. I was thinking a third-place start would be good to see what they (the leaders) were doing.

“But after the track prep, I think winning the Dash was a good move.”

The entire 1/3-mile track was worked on before the 55-lap Feature, creating a new tacky racing surface.

When the 55-lap Feature went green, Schatz rocketed around the outside of Haudenschild on the exit of the first corner to take the lead. Tim Shaffer did the same the next corner, moving Haudenschild to third.

Five laps into the race – which saw lap times in the low 11 second bracket for the majority of it – Schatz caught lap traffic. At the same time, Haudenschild found his rhythm and charged his way back by Shaffer for second.

Then, in the time it takes to snap your fingers, the NOS Energy Drink No. 17 was on Schatz’s bumper. No matter where Haudenschild placed his car on the track he found grip. The 10-time Series champion was prey with no protection.

On Lap 10, Schatz covered the high side into turn one, while Haudenschild launched his car to the middle lane. Haudenschild’s tires held the better relationship with the clay surface and powered him by the Toco Warranty No. 15 car.

“I was really worried once [Shaffer] and Donny got by me,” Haudenschild said. “I didn’t quite know what to do. Once we got into traffic, I had the mindset I was going to get around them and run consistent laps.”

From there, Haudenschild showed his strength. Showed his endurance. And showed his will power. He was the man without fear. His charge through lapped cars looked more like a game than a challenge. Whether it was a slide job to drive by several cars at a time or going three-wide between two lapped cars, Haudenschild didn’t hesitate to make the move.

Once he lapped his way to the top-10, Sweet gave him his biggest challenge of the night. The two dueled for laps, with Sweet aggressively charging his way back by Haudenschild several times to remain on the lead lap. However, no one could match the No. 17 car.

Haudenschild eventually slid his way by Sweet with 17 laps to go and continued his hunt through the field. Schatz and Pittman’s battle for second-place was quickly going from being a battle behind Haudenschild, to one in front of him.

The two series champions dueled for the position throughout the race, but Schatz prevailed with Pittman never finding a strong enough run to get by the reigning champion. However, with Haudenschild out of sight, they thought they were potentially battling for the win.

“I thought I actually won; I couldn’t see him,” Schatz said. "I thought maybe he had run out of fuel or pulled off or something. I can’t believe it went green to checkered.”

He added all he could do was commend Haudenschild on his performance and applaud him.

“That was a whoopin’ right there,” said Schatz, who is now two points behind Sweet in the Series point standings.

Pittman also stated he thought he was battling Schatz for the win at the end. He was happy with the result, though, after a few weeks of undesired finishes.

Nothing surprised Haudenschild. The heat didn’t get to him. The long duration of the race didn’t get to him, and he knew he had a good car underneath him.

“Really, it wasn’t that physical at all,” Haudenschild said. “Keeping your mind right, making smart moves. I looked up at the board on Lap 51 and I probably shouldn’t have, ‘cause I think I did make one mistake after that. When the board is right in front of your face it’s hard not to. Especially in this long of a race. I was trying to play it cool and wanted to get it over with. Fifty-five laps is a long race.”

At the end of those 55 laps, though, celebration. After climbing to the top wing of his Sprint Car, spewing NOS Energy Drink all around Victory Lane, Haudenschild was greeted with congratulatory remarks and a hug from his hero – his dad.

“It was pretty awesome,” Jac Haudenschild said about his son’s win. “He lapped me a couple of times, so I know he must have been going pretty good.”

Haudenschild’s victory earned him a $20,000 payday and his second win of the season – seventh career World of Outlaws win overall. After some struggles in the first half of the season – missing five Features – he and his team have been building momentum in the summer months.

“It’s huge,” Haudenschild said about the win. “Just to get it for our guys. Build a little bit of confidence. Put another win on the calendar and just keep working on it. I feel like we still have work to do on different kinds of tracks. Definitely this track is kind of my style.

“It’s been a little bit of a struggle the beginning of the year. We’re not quite where we want to be win wise, but we’re working at it and I feel like we’re doing it at the right time.”

He’s leaving Missouri not only with the confidence of another win, but the prestige of a new title.

He earned it by showing his strength. Earned it by showing his endurance. And earned it by proving his will power.

Sheldon Haudenschild is the new Ironman.

VON DOHREN AND BUTLER WIN NASCAR FEATURE RACES AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY

$10,000 TO WIN FORREST ROGERS MEMORIAL MODIFIED CLASSIC ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 10

BECHTELSVILLE, PA. August 3, 2019 . . . Craig Von Dohren, eliminated from last week’s feature, redeemed himself on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway. The Oley, PA lead foot started 16th and cautiously worked his way to the front behind the wheel of the Pioneer Pole Building/Keith Harring Transportation No. 1C in the activities broadcast by RCN TV, Allentown.

By the halfway marker he was third battling with the Strunk brothers Jeff, second and Glenn in the lead. The ten-time point champion made a daring move for the top spot. He shot under Jeff, who was committed to the outside and then powered the Nick Gatto Engine car around Glenn coming off the fourth turn for the lead on the 16th lap.

Von Dohren maintained his composure and went on to chalk up his fourth win of the season in the TP Trailers 30-lap NASCAR 358 Modified feature.

Jack Butler, denied victory in the Firecracker 40-lap Sportsman feature several weeks ago, was determined not to let anyone stop him this time. When leader Jesse Landis and Butler came out of the fourth turn, Butler was on a mission and moved to the high side in an attempt to become the new leader. It was a successful move and he was now first on the 19th lap.

Butler remained the leader of the T.P. Truck Equipment NASCAR Sportsman 25-lap feature the rest of the way and collected his second win of the season.

Providing the feature winners met the necessary requirements, they received monetary awards from T.P. Trailers and a certificate from VP Fuels for product awards. The Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award recipients were Glenn Strunk and Landis. Parker Guldin, who finished 16th in the Sportsman feature received an extra monetary bonus from the track for using the first crate engine.

Bobby Gunther Walsh was off and running at the onset of the Modified feature with Glenn Strunk, Justin Grim, Jordan Henn and rookie and one time feature winner Dylan Swinehart in pursuit.

Gunther Walsh distanced himself from the field within a few laps, but by the tenth lap G. Strunk reeled him in.

John Willman regrouped the field when he slowed his pace on the 12th lap to bring out the first yellow. On the restart G. Strunk became the new leader with J. Strunk and Von Dohren following through for second and third respectively as Gunther Walsh fell to fourth.

It was the 16th lap Von Dohren made a bold move and passed the Strunk’s to take over first.

Gunther Walsh’s fine run ended on the 19th lap when he stopped in the third turn out of contention for the caution. It was still Von Dohren and J. Strunk one and two, but by now Brett Kressley, who started midway in the starting field, joined the battle followed by Louden Reimert and G. Strunk.

Once Von Dohren was in first he never surrendered the spot and at the wave of the checkered it was Saturday night career win number 109. Finishing second was J. Strunk followed by Kressley, Umbenhauer and current point leader Duane Howard.

Heat winners were J. Strunk, Henn, G. Strunk and Reimert. Rick Laubach and last week’s feature winner Doug Manmiller won the consies.

Next week these same drivers plus a host of others including defending race winner Ray Swinehart will participate in the events leading up to the Forrest Rogers Memorial TP Trailers 50-lap NASCAR feature in memory of the man that started it all in 1963.

Tom Miller, who collected his first career win at the track a few weeks ago, led the Sportsman feature for six laps before he went spinning into the backstretch infield and Jesse Landis emerged as the new leader.

Dicing for positions behind Landis were Chris Esposito, Brad Brightbill, Butler and Kyle Lilick.

Butler overtook second on the 15th lap restart needed when Nate Brinker and Sean Weiss, last week’s feature winner, tangled on the backstretch.

Landis and Butler battled for the lead for four laps before Butler shot to the outside of Landis and to the front of the pack on lap 19.

Brightbill overtook second with two laps to go to challenge Butler, but was not able to pass him.

Butler went on to claim his second career victory followed by Brightbill, Landis, Lilick and Esposito.

Big bucks, $10,000, goes to the winner of the Saturday, August 10th Forrest Rogers Memorial, that is a 50-lapper for the NASCAR 358 Modifieds, and ten time track champion Craig Von Dohren will be trying to hold off a large number of challengers as he shoots for his 9th win in the Classic. Modifieds and Sportsman will take part in 49th annual Forrest Rogers Memorial night of racing action. Racing gets the green at 7:30 p.m. Adult admission is $25, youngsters 6 through 11 pay just $ and those under 6 are admitted free. Pit admission is $30.

Free backpacks, just in time for school openings, courtesy of Craig Whitmoyer and Snyder Web Design, will be given away at the Rogers Memorial. Kids must pick up their free tickets Saturday night at the main entrance, right on up until heat races are completed, with five boys and five girls having their lucky tickets drawn at intermission to win the backpacks.

In addition to the backpacks, school kits and activity books, all part of the KIDS DRIVE NASCAR KIT, will be given away at the main gate while supplies last.

Freedom 76 Lap Sponsorships, just $20, are available from Tina Rogers or Tommy Kramer at the track. Lap sponsorships and heat race sponsorships ($200) are available through Ernie Saxton at 267.934.7286 or mail a check to cover the cost of laps and/or heat race to Grandview Speedway, 87 Wilt Road, Bechtelsville, PA 19505.

HEARNE HURTLES TO MODIFIED RACE WIN AT WALL SATURDAY

WALL, N.J. ~ On the same speedway on which his father Gil Hearne won a record setting 101 times, New Egypt speedster Jason Hearne fought off some of the best drivers in the business to win the 40-lap “Ladies' Night” feature race at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. The All American Auto Group Modified win was Hearne's career fourth and his first in just over three years.

Hearne rocketed his famous family trademark No. 12 to the front at the outset but was never alone. Andrew Krause of Holmdel was the first to take a shot at the leader before Howell's Kevin Davison advanced to second and went after the leader starting on lap 12. Krause later advanced to second and went after Hearne again while former champion and current point leader Steven Reed of Jackson was always in the mix in this high speed chase. This battle for the win became even more intense thanks to several restarts due to mostly minor incidents.

At the finish Hearne's bright orange racer parked in the winner's circle while Krause, Reed, Jason's Jason Treat and Derek Hopkinson of Toms River wrapped up the top five.

“It feels great to win again,” Hearne said after the event. “Did I think I was going to win again? The way my luck has been going I didn't think I was going to finish a race again! I have to thank Jim Wolf. He has been with me in this for 20 years. Also want to thank Bob from Echo Hills Farm. He is here every race.”

Jarret DiGiantomasso of Jackson raced to victory in the companion 25-lapper for the Center State Engineering Sportsman cars taking the lead with just three laps remaining. DiGiantomasso took command when early leader Tommy Martino of Farmingdale got out of shape exiting turn two involving several racers including DiGiantomasso's brother Carsten.

Wrapping up the top five at the finish were Neil Rutt III of Edison, Jackson's Shanon Mongeau, Roland DeMartino of Beachwood and Lanoka Harbor's Jonathan Laureigh.

After trying all season for a victory Alonzo Morales of Mt. Ephraim grabbed two Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stock main event wins Saturday night. In the first race, rain postponed from earlier in the season, Morales chased Jeffrey Loesch of Neptune City to the line. When Loesch's car failed the post race inspection Morales earned the win over Rutt, Ricky Williams, Brick's Randy Hart and Chuck McDonald of Groton, Ct.

Morales enjoyed the win in the second race as Rutt, Loesch, Ryan Maher of Neptune City, and McDonald wrapped up the top five.

Point leader Shanon Mongeau of Jackson won his sixth Mike Performance Center Limited Late Model 25-lap race of the season while Krause, Hazlet's Chris Silvestri, Andy Gamble and Jim Moorman were second through fifth.

Auto racing continues at Wall Stadium Speedway this Saturday (August 10) night. Action is slated for the Modifieds, Sportsman, Limited Late Models, Factory Stocks and 4 Cylinder Stocks. Grandstand gates open at 5:00 p.m., qualifying begins at 5:45 p.m. and features start at 7:00 p.m.

Wall Stadium is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B. The speedway hotline number is 732-681-6400 and email address is ckmotorsports@aol.com.

RICO ROMPS TO IMPRESSIVE I-55 SCORE FROM 14TH

PEVELY, MO. (August 3, 2019) - Earning his 11th-career POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League victory on Friday night, Rico Abreu did so in jaw-dropping fashion at the Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55. Driving from 14th-to-1st in 15 laps, Abreu put on a clinic as he marched through the field almost instantly and then ran away in the second half for a dominating triumph at the Pevely, Mo. 1/3rd-mile.

While Abreu took the green flag from the outside of the seventh row, it was Zach Daum of Pocahontas, Ill. in his Toyota No. 5D and C.J. Leary of Greenfield, Ind. aboard the Reynolds Racing, Lucas Oil, Ripper/SR-11 pacing the field out front.

Flying flat out into turn one, Leary accepted the early lead while Daum settled into second and the 30-lapper started to shake out. A lap five stoppage for an upside down, top-five running Noah Gass halted the field and shined the spotlight on Abreu, who had already stormed from 14th-to-seventh in five trips around.

While Leary maintained control out front, all eyes turned to the war for the runner-up spot as Jesse Colwell of Red Bluff, Calif. launched a lap ten slider on Daum and brought Abreu along with him. The trio of Colwell, Daum and Abreu went head-to-head swapping spots, switching lines and trading blows for several laps before a lap 11 caution bunched them back up.

Taking advantage of the break, Abreu regrouped and immediately went back on the attack as the green flag flew again. Nailing the turns one and two cushion, Abreu rocketed around Colwell to secure third and wasted no time pouncing on Daum, tossing a bomb-like slide job from the backstretch into turn three as he stole that spot away too.

A lap 14 break for an upside-down Austin O'Dell gave fans just what they wanted to see, a restart with the hard-charging Abreu right on Leary's back bumper. Gassing it right away and making his move, Abreu attacked with a turn one slider, but Leary proved ready and crossed him over.

Again, Abreu launched the three-story slider at Leary into turn three and the duo raced side-by-side down the front stretch with the cross flags waving and Abreu ahead by a nose. Racing wheel-to-wheel into turn one, Abreu edged Leary into the corner and drifted to the cushion before powering off and running away with the lead.

Going unchallenged from there, Rico Abreu of St. Helena, Calif. led the final 16 laps aboard his Keith Kunz Motorsports, Safelite Autoglass, Bullet/Toyota No. 97 and locked down his 11th-career POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League win in dominating fashion. Driving all the way from 14th, an elated Abreu rose from the car in victory lane to a monstrous applause from the thrilled crowd at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55.

Jesse Colwell ended up with a runner-up finish for his Keith Kunz Motorsports, JBL Audio, Bullet/Toyota No. 71, extending his series points lead into the second half of the season. After controlling the opening half, CJ Leary faded in the end to a still strong third-place effort for his Reynolds Racing No. 21KS entry.

Rounding out the top five behind Abreu, Colwell and Leary was fourth-place finisher Zach Daum and fifth-place driver Tyler Thomas. Finishing out the top ten was Cannon McIntosh in sixth, Daison Pursley in seventh, Holley Hollan in eighth, Ace McCarthy in ninth and Jesse Love in tenth.

NEW FIRST: Brad Sweet earns first Federated Auto Parts Raceway win
Sweet holds off Sheldon Haudenschild and Donny Schatz for 12th win of the season

PEVELY, MO – Aug. 2, 2019 – Brad Sweet’s 2019 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series "dream season" has so far seen the Grass Valley, Calif.-native lead laps, take home big paychecks and now earn a first win.

Leading all 35 laps of the Night Before the Ironman Feature at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 Friday night, Sweet rolled into Victory Lane at the Pevely, Mo. track for the first time in his career – his 12th win of the season.

“Pevely is a really awesome race track,” Sweet said. “I remember the first time I came here I was just in awe of the place. I’ve led a lot of laps here. I either stuff it in the fence or we got beat at the end. It’s nice to get the first one out of the way.”

While he led every lap en route to the victory, the Kasey Kahne Racing driver was not handed the victory with ease.

Missouri-native Hunter Schuerenburg started on the pole for the Feature, after winning his Drydene Heat race and the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash and rocketed to the lead on the initial start. However, he hit the launch button too early. That forced the race to be restarted with Donny Schatz moved up to the front row and Schuerenburg moved behind him in the second row.

The front row was now Schatz and Sweet – the top two in the point standings. The two have been almost inseparable on the race track, having to race each other for position every week.

Schatz darted to the lead on the restart. Going into turn one, he chose low, while Sweet chose high. The Toco Warranty No. 15 car slid up the track exiting turn two, allowing the NAPA Auto Parts No. 49 of Sweet to charge off the high side and bolt underneath Schatz down the backstretch.

Sweet then launched his car into turn three, sliding past Schatz and up in front of him exiting turn four. Like Sweet's corner before, Schatz had the momentum on the high side and snuck underneath Sweet for a drag race down the front straightaway. The lap went to Sweet, but only by inches.

The 10-time Series champion went side-by-side with Sweet into turn one and, again, was beat by the speed Sweet could maintain running the high line. Sweet’s lead went from inches to feet to yards over the reigning champion. Schuerenburg also pulled a slide job on Schatz to take second the next lap.

Five laps into the race, the first caution came out for Joe B. Miller coming to a stop on the track. On the restart, Schuerenburg went for the lead, attempting to pull off a slide job on Sweet into the first corner. However, his dive bomb was still not enough to clear Sweet before the No. 49 charged off the turn with a head of stream around the high side.

Before being able to get into a rhythm, the caution came out again. This time for Cale Thomas landing on his side in turn four.

When the green flag flew again, Sweet wasted no time stretching his lead over Schuerenburg. Schatz found his way around the No. 11 for second-place the next lap, too.

The top three remained in their running order for the remainder of the first half of the race. Behind them, though, Logan Schuchart and Sheldon Haudenschild were making their trek to the front. By the halfway point, Schuchart found his was to fourth – from fifth – and Haudenschild fifth – from eighth.

After a caution at the halfway point, both Schuchart and Haudenschild made their way by Schuerenburg to move up a position. Haudenschild didn’t just use his run to put Schuerenburg, behind him, though. He threw a daring slider at Schuchart into turn one and made it work. With 16 laps to go, he found himself in third and closing on second-place Schatz.

With 12 laps to go, Haudenschild threw a slide job at Schatz in turns three and four, and again made it work. Schatz couldn’t make the top work as well as Sweet and Haudenschild to challenge for the position back.

“Trying to hit a little one-inch spot with your right rear… is tough to do,” Schatz said. “Obviously, Brad and Sheldon are good at that kind of stuff. Me, I try to stay in a little bit more control.”

With Schatz behind him, the Wooster, Ohio-native was now in second-place and eager to hunt down his second win of the season.

Lap traffic plagued Sweet’s quest for victory. The slower cars forced him to move around and break out of his rhythm to find his way around them. That allowed Haudenschild to slowly work his way toward Sweet.

Haudenschild had Sweet in sight with five laps to. But Sweet was strong every time he ran the high side, able to carry enough momentum around the track to leave a few cars lengths distance between he and the NOS Energy Drink No. 17 car.

With three laps to go Haudenschild was building a run to catch Sweet. However, before he could fully execute on it, the caution came out for Carson Macedo flipping in turn two.

On the final restart, Sweet chose the middle of the track in the first corner, trying to block a big run by Haudenschild. It worked. The Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall driver looked underneath Sweet, but couldn’t put anything together to challenge him in the remaining laps.

“I thought with the restart we would have a little bit better of a shot,” Haudenschild said. “I knew I was running out of laps there. I didn’t really care either way with the caution or not. Brad was a little bit better than us. I feel like I got by Donny at the right time to make some ground up on Brad, but just finished second.”

Sweet sped off to his first Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 win and 46th career win overall.

“The restarts were making me the most nervous,” Sweet said. “Didn’t know if I should be choosing the bottom or the top, you’re just real vulnerable into (turn) one there. Kind of found that line where I was driving across into one and felt a little better about the restarts. I could get to the cushion off (turn) two and as long as I could get a good run, I felt like I was pretty good on top of turns three and four.”

His win also helped his extend his points lead on Schatz – who finished third – after losing points to the Fargo, N.D. driver last weekend.

The focus for all of the drivers is now on Saturday night’s 55-lap $20,000-to-win Ironman event at the 1/3-mile track. A win at the Ironman 55 would be another ideal addition to Sweet’s dream year. Even with a dominating performance Friday night, he knows there could be room for improvement.

“We’ll go back and watch the video and make sure I was going everything right and hopefully come back and get us an Ironman tomorrow,” Sweet said.
