LEADING THE WAY: Sweet wins at Beaver Dam for back-to-back wins
Brad Sweet continues early season dominance by winning at Beaver Dam Raceway, extending his points lead over Donny Schatz
In the words of Brad Sweet, “the more you lead, the better you get at it.” The statement rings like a prophecy he wrote from himself.
Almost halfway through the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series 2019 season, Sweet has made leading a habit and gotten better at it each race.
With more than 100 laps led already this season, the Grass Valley, Calif.-native added another 38 laps to that total after claiming his fifth win of the season Saturday night at Beaver Dam Raceway – and his second win in-a-row.
“I’m just happy we’re clicking them off and have a little bit of momentum on our side,” said Sweet, after claiming his 39th career Series victory.
His second victory at the Wisconsin track wasn’t earned without a few faults and lessons learned along the way.
The 1/3-mile track was slick and technical for the 40-lap Feature, he said. That meant finding the right line at the right time; a feat the Kasey Kahne Racing driver faults himself for not executing perfectly.
But before the track began to take rubber late in the race, forcing Sweet to contemplate the best line, he had to contest with DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash winner Shane Stewart for the lead.
On the initial start, Stewart jumped to the lead riding the high side of the track. Sweet chose the bottom. In two laps, the advantage proved to be Sweet’s. The NAPA Auto Parts No. 49 sped by Stewart, putting close to a second gap between them.
His newfound lead was cut short a few seconds later when Logan Schuchart brought out the first caution of the night by coming to a stop in turn three.
On the restart, Sweet returned to form. He shot to the lead, leaving the remaining 23 cars to content for second amongst themselves. Stewart held on to the position for the next few laps before trying the low line and bicycling his car off turn four, giving Daryn Pittman an easy pass for second-place.
For the remaining 33 laps, third-place was traded between Stewart, David Gravel, Sheldon Haudenschild, Donny Schatz and Ian Madsen. Each driver throwing a slide job on the next to try and claim the position.
By the halfway point, Sweet caught lap traffic and Pittman started to close in. However, navigating lap traffic – a situation Sweet has found himself in several times already this year while leading – only made him faster.
Pittman eventually transitioned to the high side and again began to close in on Sweet. But with 15 laps to go, Sweet also moved to the top and pulled away to the $20,000 victory.
“It was finesse. It was tricky,” Sweet said about the race. “I had to move around on the race track. I think the bottom caught a few guys off guard. I don’t know if they thought they should be on the bottom in (turns) three and four. I kind of had an idea. I did my warm up down there to see how much grip was down there.
“Luckily it was good down there early and I was able to get the lead. I made a couple of mistakes there. I probably stayed down there too long. But I didn’t want to follow lap guys. It’s just tricky sometimes leading and moving around.”
While Pittman’s second-place finish – his third podium finish in-a-row – was a momentum building performance with his Roth Motorsports team, he’s hungry for more.
“It just feels like it’s been a while since I won,” said Pittman, who last won in Florida in February. “I’ve gone from, how do we turn things around, to being consistent, to now dammit I want to win. We’ve still got to get a little bit better, but we’re close.”
The duel for third was won by the Jason Johnson Racing No. 41 car of Gravel. In JJR’s return to Beaver Dam Raceway after Jason Johnson’s fatal accident at the raceway last year, Gravel kept the No. 41 car up front all night. He was fastest in practice, went Quick Time in Qualifying, won his Drydene Heat race and fought hard for a podium.
“We wanted to win tonight, but we’re happy with a podium,” Gravel said. “Third is good. We’ve been rolling pretty good here. Just have to keep it going.”
Gravel’s podium finish leaves him fourth in points – 144 points behind leader Sweet. Pittman is third – 138 points back – and Schatz is second – now 54 points behind Sweet after finishing seventh.
Along with the points lead, Sweet now leads World of Outlaws drivers in the most laps led, the most podium finishes – with 12 – and most wins, so far, this year. To Sweet, though…
“It really doesn’t mean a whole lot,” Sweet said. “It’s not a bad thing ever to, toward the end of June, have the most wins. But I’ve been there before. I’ll keep saying it over and over and over, these next few months, July, August and in even September, those are the months that are going to make or break the season. You can run good all the way to July 1 and never win another race.”
Consistency is key to Sweet and his Kasey Kahne Racing team. Lead more, win more.
The more he leads, the better he gets.

Canada's Robbie Price Wins His First Career Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup!
Bryan Hulbert - ALGER, Wash. (June 22, 2019) Three leaders, six lead changes, and then a list of firsts for Robbie Price in the 48th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup presented by the Skagit Casino Resort as the driver of the Millstone Heating and Sheetmetal No. 21p landed his first $15,000 Dirt Cup paycheck and his first Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network victory.
Becoming the first Canadian born driver to top the Skagit Speedway crown jewel, Robbie is also the youngest driver at 21-years old to win the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup.

"It's always good to come home, and it gives me some peace of mind. I like it a lot, and I'll be honest, we've sucked a lot this year so to come out here and win, it's such a great feeling and a great accomplishment. I'm just excited," said a nearly breathless Robbie Price, who is the 147th different winner in Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour competition.
Taking the green from the fourth spot, Price chased Jason Solwold for third as Blake Hahn took off with the top spot after an opening lap drag race with Matt Covington. Leaders into traffic on Lap 7, the top two runners closed to a nose to tail battle with both struggling to clear the back-markers. Trying to swing low on a slower car on Lap 13, Hahn made contact and spun. Never coming to a stop, and inadvertent caution was thrown to bring the field single file with Hahn in lining up in fifth.
Handing the lead to Matt Covington, the A-Rock Material No. 95 pulled away in clean air with Robbie Price under fire from Jason Solwold as the pair went slide for slide over the next few laps. Keeping pace at the line over the No. 18, Price began running down Covington who had started to work back into slower traffic. Taking advantage of slower cars, Price took a shot at the lead with Covington answering the challenge. Back and forth through traffic, Covington and Price used the slower cars as picks as Jason Solwold closed with Blake Hahn and Colton Heath in tow.
With the top five nearly under a blanket, Robbie Price took over the top spot on Lap 22. Stalked by Covington, the No. 95 reclaimed the lead on Lap 27, but Covington's night would fall 10 laps shy of the $15,000 payday as the engine expired on Lap 30.
Putting the lead back in the hands of Robbie Price, the No, 21p took the green with a lapped car between himself and Jason Solwold. Held up by the slower machine, Solwold and Hahn battled for second before the caution flew on Lap 33 for Justyn Cox who spun to a stop in the second turn.
Clearing the No. 18 for second on Lap 35, Hahn trailed by nearly two seconds as the leaders ran all out in clean air. Closing every lap on Price, the leaders hit traffic as the white flag waved with Hahn pulling to the back bumper of Robbie into the third turn. Trying to mount the run off the final turn, Robbie Price would not be denied as he bested Hahn by 0.364 seconds.
Fighting from seventh, 2018 Dirt Cup winner, Seth Bergman ran to third in the closing laps with Jason Solwold settling for fourth. Picking up eight spots for the night's Hard Charger, Australia's Scott Bogucki completed the top five in the same car that he went upside down in the night before. Sam Hafertepe, Jr. fought to sixth with Colton Heath in seventh. Travis Jacobson picked up six spots to finish eighth with John Carney II ending his first Dirt Cup in ninth. Devon Borden completed the top ten.
A total of 51 drivers checked in for the 2019 Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup. B-Features were topped by Greg Hamilton and Justin Sanders. No Provisionals were allowed.
The next event for the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network is the Fred Brownfield Classic at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash. on Friday, June 28 and Saturday, June 29. Tickets on sale at www.graysharborraceway.com.

STRUNK, MILLER AND WILBUR ARE FEATURE WINNERS AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY SATURDAY NIGHT
BECHTELSVILLE, PA. June 23, 2019 . . . Jeff Strunk gradually worked his way to the front of the pack from his ninth place starting grid until he finally advanced to second.
Kory Fleming, who had a sizeable lead built up, changed the lane he was running previously and this decision was a costly one. It allowed Strunk to reel him in and take the lead away on the 23rd lap. Encountering lap cars in the closing stages, Strunk and the others in tow bid their time to get past them. Strunk went on to score his third 30-lap TP Trailers NASCAR 358 Modified feature of the season. In addition to Strunk, the Modified division has five different feature winners including Matt Sheppard, Brett Kressley, Craig Von Dohren and Duane Howard. More than 40 Modifieds were in action on Saturday night.
Tom Miller came out of retirement after a two-year hiatus and led the 25-lap TP Truck Equipment Sportsman feature from start to finish to chalk up his first ever career victory. The 68-yr. old Gilbertsville resident finally conquered the one thing he wanted to do – win a feature at the 1/3-mile oval and it felt “wonderful” were some of his victory lane comments.
Joe Biasi Jr. led 19 laps of the 25-lap Wingless Super Sportsman feature until Steve Wilbur challenging from the beginning, made contact with him. Wilbur held on to win the 25-lap event with Biasi Jr. a close second. This was the first time the class returned in 31 years.
Providing the Modified and Sportsman feature winners met the necessary requirements, they received monetary awards from TP Trailers and a certificate from VP Fuels for product awards. The Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award recipients were Fleming and Miller. Last week’s feature winner Parker Guldin was the highest finisher in the Sportsman feature at 18th with a crate engine to receive and extra $100.
Kyle Kania, missing for a few weeks, wasted no time holding onto the early lead of the Modified feature from the pole position with Fleming, also out of contention for a while; Ron Kline, Brett Gilmore and Louden Reimert in pursuit.
The only caution of the race was when Clay Butler and Craig Whitmoyer tangled in the fourth turn with three laps completed. The restart resulted in a new leader when Fleming overtook the top spot. Reimert, Kline and Briggs Danner completed the order behind Fleming and Kania.
Fleming opened up a comfortable lead while a heated three-way battle for second brewed between Kania, Reimert and Danner.
Back further in the pack Strunk was inching his way to the front and it wasn’t until the 18th lap that he broke into the top five moving up closer as the race progressed.
For some reason, Fleming changed the line he was running which allowed the competition to reel him in.
By the time Fleming switched the groove, Strunk caught him to put his bid in the first.
The lead changed on the backstretch as the field crossed the line to complete lap 23 Strunk had the Keystone Racing No. 126 in first.
Strunk never faltered and chalked up his Saturday night 72nd career win. Chasing the ten-time Modified point champion across the line for their season best finishes were Fleming and Danner with Kevin Hirthler and Reimert completing the top five.
Heats were won by Brett Kressley, Reimert, Duane Howard and Jared Umbenhauer. Clay Butler and Tim Buckwalter won the consies.
The Sportsman feature saw Miller get the jump on polesitter B.J. Joly to set the pace in his 6-cyl. Powered No. 77T.
Dicing for positions behind Miller were Nate Brinker, Joly, Sean Weiss and Brad Brightbill, who started 12th and by the second lap was fifth. Brad Arnold soon joined the mix to try to get into the top five.
With 11 laps in the books and Miller continuing to set his rapid pace, he encountered slower moving traffic, but that didn’t deter him as the distance continued to grow.
Positions were constantly changing behind Miller with second through fifth now comprised of Brinker, Brightbill, Bachman and Arnold.
Miller never looked back once he was in front and went on chalk up a well-deserved victory trailed by Brinker, Brightbill, Bachman and Arnold.
Heat winners were Arnold, Miller and Weiss. Mark Kemmerer won the consi.
Joe Biasi Jr. grabbed the early lead of the Wingless Super Sportsman. Behind Biasi Jr., Wilbur, Rohan Beasley, Tom Savage and Eric Walker jockeyed for the remaining positions.
As the race progressed, the order was now made up of Biasi Jr., Wilbur, Bill Brian Jr., Beasley and Steve Drevicki.
Chris Henry brought out the final caution of many when he stopped along the homestretch with a trail of fluid coming from his car on the 19th lap. Biasi Jr. held his own on the restart with Wilbur trying feverishly to pass him.
With five laps to go, Biasi Jr. and Wilbur made contact and Wilbur was now in first.
Wilbur never looked back and went on to win the event trailed by Biasi Jr., Brian Jr., Drevicki and Beasley.
Savage, Craig Perigo and Wilbur won the heats.
Next on the Saturday night NASCAR schedule is a tripleheader show of T.P.Trailers NASCAR 358 Modifieds, T.P.Truck Equipment Sportsman and a second 2019 appearance for the Delaware Auto Exchange Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series. Racing on June 29 gets the green flag at 7:30 p.m. Adult admission is $18, youngsters 6 through 11 pay just $5 and kids under 6 are admitted free.

There is a big prize on the line Tuesday night, July 2 at the Grandview Speedway when the Pennsylvania 410 Sprint Car Speed Week Series invades “the hill”. It’s all part of the 30th Anniversary season for the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series and $10,000 will go to the winner of the 35 lap 410 sprint car feature event. Making this event even bigger, the 358 NASCAR Modifieds will be on the program with $3,000 going to the winner of the 30 lap modified feature. In the 2018 running of this event, NASCAR star Kyle Larson won the sprint feature as Jeff Strunk won the modified feature after starting last in the field of twenty-four cars.
The 410 sprints always attract the cream of the crop. Alan Krimes will be in the field looking for his first Thunder victory. A few years back, Krimes was in the perfect spot to score the win but a flat tire denied him of a visit to victory lane. Lucas Wolfe is an early entry as well. Wolfe was the 2007 Thunder on the Hill Champion but has not won a Thunder on the Hill feature as yet. Lucas wants to change that Tuesday night, July 2. The Rahmer Brothers, Freddie and Brandon are pre-entered and ready for Grandview. Their father Fred is a nine time Thunder on the Hill feature winner, Freddie won the All Star event in 2017 and Brandon hopes to add his name to the Thunder on the Hill winners list.
And along came T.J. Stutts. A few years back, Stutts set fast for the night and was a contender for the win when mechanical problems sidelined him from action. Stutts knows the fast way around Grandview and is always considered a contender to collect the $10,000 pay day.
The NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series will also showcase the 358 NASCAR Modifieds on Tuesday night, July 2. Ryan Watt was the winner of the last two Modified Thunder events and he’ll be looking for three in a row. Craig VonDohren, Duane Howard, Jeff Strunk and Ryan Godown are expected to chase the $3,000 to win 30 lap modified feature.
On Tuesday night, July 2 gates will open at 5 PM with warm-ups at 6:45 PM. The 410 sprint cars will open the show with time trials followed by the 358 modified and 410 sprint qualifying. This will all lead up to the $10,000 to win 35 lap Speed Week Sprint car feature event and the 30 lap Modified feature.
Advance tickets may be ordered for the Tuesday, July 2 PA 410 Sprint Speed Week Series and 358 NASCAR Modifies by calling 443 513 4456. Tickets may be paid for and picked up at the WILL CALL Window on race night, Tuesday, July 2 after 3:30 PM. Advance ticket holders may entitle you to enter the grandstands at 4:30. Adult admission tickets are $30, children 6 to 11 $10 and children five and under will be admitted for free. General admission tickets will go on sale at 5 PM at the Grandview Speedway

MAURIELLO TOPS MODS, MAJEK, O'SHEA AND RAJKOWSKI ARE WALL FACTORY STOCK WNNERS
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Eric Mauriello raced to his third win of the season in the 40-lap main event for the All American Auto Group Modified stock cars at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. The Brick resident's victory came in front of a large crowd on the first Saturday night of the summer season at the Jersey Shore.
Kenny Matlach of New Hyde Park, N.Y. was the first leader of the contest but Tyler Truex of Little Egg Harbor soon advanced to second to challenge. Mauriello was on the charge from deep in the pack and arrived in third spot soon after. The top runners raced in tight formation until lap eight when several made contact and Matlach spun as a result. Mauriello then used the outside lane, as he had to advance through the pack, to race into the lead and was never headed the rest of the way.
Holmdel's Andrew Krause advanced to second by lap 12 and then raced home for second with Roger Coss of Lafayette, Toms River's Derek Hopkinson and recent Garden State Classic winner Steven Reed of Jackson wrapping up the top five.
“Steve and the crew have this No. 31 running great,” Mauriello said after stretching his point lead. “Inside or outside the car is fast and handles well. It really works good in the outside lane.”
The O'Shea's Auto Repair Factory Stocks were featured in three 25-lap main events. Tim Majek of Scotch Plains grabbed his second career win in the first race after early leader John Bowers of Pt. Pleasant spun after the duo made contact in the heat of battle on lap 18. Bryan O'Shea of Neptune City, Manchester's Scott Riggleman, Gerry Koenig of Merrick, N.Y. and Howell's Nick Kilmer wrapped up the top five.
The second main event saw O'Shea take the after jumping into the top spot early. Koenig, Tom Rajkowski of Fords, Elliott Wohl of Beachwood and Brick's Joe Mongeau completed the top five.
Rajkowski then took over the lead of the third main event on lap seven and raced on to his first ever main event win. Koenig, Wohl, early leader Joey Helberg of Union and Mongeau wrapped up the top five.
Jarret DiGiantomasso of Jackson took an emotional victory, dedicating the win to a friend who recently passed away, in the Center State Engineering Sportsman 25-lapper. Michael Carr of Pt. Pleasant was second with Howell's Eric Lane, Tommy Martino of Farmingdale and Michael Rising of Little Egg Harbor finishing third through fifth.
Neil Rutt III of Edison to the lead early and raced to a convincing win in the 25-lap race for the Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks, his third of the season. Jeffrey Loesch of Neptune City, Darianne McLaren of Edison, Sal Liguori of Hazlet and Ryan Maher of Neptune were second through fifth.
Defending Mike's Performance Center Limited Late Model champion Shanon Mongeau of Jackson won his fifth 25-lapper of the second over Jerick Johnson of North Carolina, Hazlet's Chris Silvestri, Jim Moorman of Brooklawn and Jackson's Greg Gastelu.
Auto racing continues at Wall Stadium Speedway this Saturday (June 29) night. The Modified cars will battle in a 40-lapper while the Center State Engineering Sportsman cars and the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend cars will compete in 25 lap main events. The Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks are set for a 50-lap feature race. All Scouts arriving at the track wearing any part of the uniform will be admitted free of charge. Grandstand gates open at 5:00 p.m., qualifying begins at 5:45 p.m. and features start at 7:00 p.m.

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (June 21, 2019) - Due to safety concerns, Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Indy Metal Finishing competition at Atomic Speedway on Friday, June 21, was canceled with two heat races complete.
During the third Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 heat race, an incident occurring between turns three and four caused a considerable amount of fence damage. The damage was perceived significant, thus creating an unsafe racing environment. With driver, as well as fan safety the priority, All Star Circuit of Champions officials decided it was in everyone’s best interest to cancel the remaining portion of the All Star program.
The 37th edition of Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Indy Metal Finishing will come to a close tomorrow evening - Saturday, June 22 - at ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval;’ Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio. The Speedweek finale will award a $10,000 top prize.
An overall Ohio Sprint Speedweek champion will also be crowned at the conclusion of the Wayne County Speedway Speedweek finale. The 2019 champion will earn a $4,000 top prize, with an additional $7,000 being spread amongst the remaining top-ten finishers in the final Speedweek standings.
If weather becomes a factor, the Ohio Sprint Speedweek finale will be pushed to Sunday, June 23.
