McDOUGAL CROSSES BRIDGEPORT OFF EASTERN STORM CHECKLIST

Swedesboro, New Jersey (June 12, 2019).........To earn his first career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car victory last September in Pevely, Mo., Jason McDougal played the role of the chaser on a late-race restart.
To gain his second career series win Wednesday night in round two of the 13th annual "Eastern Storm" at Bridgeport Speedway, the roles were reversed as the Broken Arrow, Okla. native had to hold off the competition on a green-white-checker restart.
Initially, McDougal was heralded as a quick study after making an impressive series debut less than a calendar year ago. Now, after acing both of those particular exams in his young career, he's rapidly becoming one of the elite, earning his first career Eastern Storm triumph on the 3/8-mile dirt oval.
Although, as hard as McDougal drove into turn one on the final restart, he might've made it stick on the 5/8-mile track that surrounds it.
"I drove it into one as deep as I could," McDougal exclaimed, emphasizing the word 'deep.' "That was the hardest I ran it into one during that whole race. It was either going to bike or stick."
Justin Grant, a 14-time USAC Sprint Car feature winner himself, was eager to tally his initial Eastern Storm win as he lined up second on the final restart, ready to make his run at McDougal.
"I was going to slide him into one, but I didn't have enough of a run," Grant explained. "Then I thought, 'well, if I can hook the bottom off of two, I can at least stay tucked up alongside of him and slide him going into three. Then, I about half-spun in the middle of one and two, and that whole plan went away."
McDougal checked out initially on the start from the outside of the front row, though pole sitter Carson Short made a bid for the lead, running side-by-side and edging ahead momentarily on the bottom of turn three on the opening lap before McDougal used the top to drive around the outside of Short to lead the field back to the stripe.
As McDougal checked out to a 1.5 second advantage, the battled raged for second with Kevin Thomas, Jr. smothering Short for second to no avail as Short slammed the door on Thomas on the tenth lap into one. Short had enough momentum each time to guard the challenge from Thomas, but three laps later, at the same spot, Thomas kicked the door open, grooving to the bottom and edging ahead for the second position exiting turn two.
Nearing midway, the sense was that, with an open track, Thomas would be able to start reeling McDougal in. Initially, he did, cutting a half-second off the interval to knock McDougal's lead down to nine-tenths of a second. As McDougal began to encounter the tail end of the field on lap 19, he built his lead back up to 1.3 seconds.
However, gridlock, road construction-type traffic lay ahead with not one, not two, but three cars occupying three different grooves together as McDougal approached. Seemingly stuck, McDougal tried to split two of the lappers on separate occasions without much luck. That allowed both Grant and Thomas to come back into play with five laps remaining.
On lap 26, Grant and Thomas' see-saw positioning saw Grant slide Thomas into turn three. Thomas countered and the two drag raced into turn one with Thomas poking ahead and briefly surging ahead by a car length over McDougal between turns one and two. That is, until McDougal zipped back past on the outside to regain the lead, albeit with the lapped cars of Brian VanMeveren and Dominick Buffalino running in tandem just ahead.
"They were racing just close enough side-by-side to where I couldn't split them getting into the corner," McDougal recalled. "One of them entered low enough every time, that I probably could've drove around the outside of him, but we would've crashed about halfway through the corner. Basically, I just waited until the guy on the bottom messed up enough to where I could almost push the guy at the top off the track."

McDougal was on high alert and was able to wedge the front bumper between the two off the second turn on lap 28, cutting through the middle of both cars on the back straightaway to clear both in one fell swoop between turns three and four.
As soon as McDougal appeared to be in the clear, the yellow flag dropped for the stopped car of Dustin Christie in turn four, setting up one final two-lap showdown. However, McDougal was flawless on the resumption, spurting away uncontested throughout the last 1-3/4 of a lap earn the $6,000 victory, the money with which McDougal said he might spend on a new Gucci belt to boost his appearance for the fans.
McDougal's victory in the Daigh-Phillips Motorsports/Frank & Jill Daigh - Roger & Barb Tapy - Griffin's Propane/DRC/Foxco Chevy provided the Phillips team their first Eastern Storm feature victory since Dave Darland's win at Port Royal in 2013.
Thomas outdueled Grant in a ferocious battle in the waning laps to take second. Grant finished third ahead of fast qualifier and new one-lap track record holder Chase Stockon, while new "Eastern Storm" point leader C.J. Leary rounded out the top-five.

Second Heat Winner), Dave Darland (AutoMeter/Indy Race Parts Third Heat Winner), Joey Biasi (Roger & Barb Tapy 13th Fastest Qualifier), Chad Boespflug (Wilwood Brakes 13th Place Finisher) and Brady Bacon (KSE Racing Products Hard Charger).

BACON GETS $10K GRANDVIEW TRIFECTA IN EASTERN STORM OPENER

Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania (June 11, 2019).........In each of the last two years, Brady Bacon had to pull some late-race heroics out of his pocket in the final laps of the "Jesse Hockett Classic" / "Eastern Storm" opener at Grandview Speedway.
This one Tuesday night was anything but a nail-biter as the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver led all 40 laps in dominant fashion to collect $10,000 and become the first driver in Eastern Storm history to win three races at a single track, an achievement which took him just three years to accomplish.
As opposed to his 2017-18 Grandview triumphs, Bacon felt he had car to beat right from the get-go, though it very nearly ended as soon as it started with a huge bike in turn two during hot laps that he managed to save, carry on and then thrive, on a night and a 1/3-mile track he seems to have a knack for winning at.
"This is the first year I actually think we had the best car," Bacon admitted. "The other couple of years, we managed to sneak to the front and find some stuff to get the wins. This time, I feel like we had a really good car all night. We had a game plan going in here, and even though it was rough at the beginning of the night, we wanted to stick to our guns and make sure we got tight enough for the feature."
Bacon's victory was also special in personal ways, both for the car owner he won his two USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car titles for and for the race's namesake, who won at Grandview in 2009, and was one of Bacon's closest fellow competitors on the USAC trail.
"This is the first win since the passing of (car owner) Richard Hoffman and with this being the Jesse Hockett race, I was close friends with him too. That's pretty special," Bacon beamed.
To set Bacon's Grandview backstory, in 2017, Bacon started sixth and worked his way to lead laps 25-35 before being overtaken by C.J. Leary with five laps remaining. Bacon reeled Leary back in, and on lap 38 in lapped traffic, Bacon shot underneath as Leary got hung up on the outside.
In 2018, Bacon started from the pole, fell back, then charged to the front to lead laps 13-29 before Kevin Thomas, Jr. snatched the lead away with 11 laps to go. Again, when it all looked to be over for Bacon, he found his second wind and tracked down Thomas with three to go to pull off the victory.
None of that transpired Tuesday night. Bacon got the jump on the start, using the topside from his outside front row starting position to power around polesitter Justin Grant to grab the lead exiting turn two. By the fourth lap, Bacon was wheels up and just about ready for takeoff as he crossed the stripe with a one second lead.
As would be the case throughout the duration of the race, the battle was for second on back. Just before the end of the first quarter of the 40-lapper, Tyler Courtney went around the outside of Grant for position in turn four. Grant fought back to reclaim second going into turn three before Courtney got Grant at the line on lap six.
Grant got the runner-up position back from Courtney on lap seven and the pair tussled until the ninth lap when Courtney made contact with Grant's rear bumper. Courtney swung wide in turn three, laying down the red carpet for series point leader C.J. Leary to duck underneath for third.
Moments later, disaster struck for local favorite and 12th running Timmy Buckwalter of Douglassville, Pa., who slid wide off turn four, clipped the right rear against the wall and rode out a wild flip down the front straightaway that ripped the tail tank off and displaced the engine from its normal position. The 2018 USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car co-Rookie of the Year climbed out and walked away.

By the halfway mark, Bacon stepped away once again as second through seventh were all under a blanket, but the one surging through it all was ninth-place starter Chris Windom. The two-time and defending Eastern Storm champ zipped by Kevin Thomas, Jr. for fourth on the bottom. Then, on lap 22, disposed of Leary for third in the same spot on the track.
Two laps later, on lap 24, Windom slid Grant into turn one. Grant countered back underneath off turn two. On lap 25, it was déjà vu with both swapping the lead on each end of the track before Windom prevailed a lap later with the position in turn three. Leary moved to third by Grant one lap later, likewise, on the bottom of three.
All the while, Bacon was grinning as he constructed an unchallenged 3.5 second lead with less than 10 laps left and to 4 seconds with just five to go. Although, the race for second was not on ice just quite yet. Leary stormed his way back by Windom with just two laps left to nab second at the end, though, still 4.352 seconds behind Bacon at the finish.
Leary finished second ahead of Windom, Courtney and Thomas. Robert Ballou, fast qualifier Chase Stockon, Justin Grant, Jason McDougal and Chad Boespflug rounded out the top-ten.
Bacon's 25th career USAC National Sprint Car win moved him into a tie for 18th all-time with Steve Butler, Jay Drake and Kevin Thomas, Jr. He also joined Windom as the second driver to win multiples races in the series this year.

BECHTELSVILLE, PA (June 11, 2019) – Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Brady Bacon picked up his third consecutive win and the $10,000 winner’s share as part of the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series Jesse Hockett Classic on Tuesday Night at Grandview Speedway. This event marked the one-hundred and thirty-third Thunder on the Hill event since the series started in 1990.
Bacon was the winner of the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car portion of the Thunder season kick-off while Boyertown, Pennsylvania’s Ryan Watt picked up the victory in the NASCAR 358 Modifieds – his second career Thunder on the Hill Racing Series win.
A drag race down the front stretch started the 40-lap USAC main event with front row starters Justin Grant and Brady Bacon. Bacon gained the advantage and quickly pulled away from the twenty-two car field.
Behind the leader, Grant and Tyler Courtney swapped the second-place spot multiple times before the red flag flew on lap 9 for local favorite Tim Buckwalter, who clipped the outside retaining wall -- violently flipping down the frontstretch of the speedway. Buckwalter, a Douglassville, PA native, walked away uninjured.

On the restart, Bacon continued his quest for the win, maintaining the lead over Justin Grant and CJ Leary.
The best-of-the-best in USAC competition battled it out for the second spot. Five cars challenged Grant including Leary, Kevin Thomas Jr. and Tyler Courtney.
All eyes were on Chris Windom, powering from his ninth-place starting position into the top five. Forging a battle with Grant, Windom moved into the third spot at the halfway point – the two stole the show, swapping sliders for multiple laps and exchanging the second position numerous times.
It was all Bacon for the remainder of the event, claiming the victory and the prize money. CJ Leary would grab the second position with three laps remaining and Chris Windom would settle for third.
Tyler Courtney came home in the fourth position followed by Kevin Thomas Jr.
USAC Heat Races were won by Tim Buckwalter, Carson Short, and Chad Boespflug while Jason McDougal won the B-Main with a new 12-lap track record.
Ringoes, NJ’s Ryan Godown led the NASCAR 358 Modified field to the drop of the green flag with Watt quickly moving into the second spot. Godown set the pace, but Watt closed quickly, stalking the leader and waiting patiently to make a move for the top spot.
The only yellow of the event flew on lap 10, as the leader, Ryan Godown slowed entering turn 3 handing the lead over to Watt.
On the restart, Craig Von Dohren charged inside the leader, with Duane Howard close on his tail – but neither could complete the pass on Watt. Howard moved passed VonDohren a few laps later, setting his sights on the leader.
The leaders approached lapped traffic on the 20th circuit closing the gap and allowing Howard to challenge for the win. Howard’s No. 357 machine moved inside Watt’s, showing the nose but unable to complete the pass.
The pair raced down the backstretch side-by-side as the checkered flag approached. The battle for the lead shaped up, but Watt gained an advantage while Howard struggled with a noticeable right rear flat tire. Watt would roll on for the victory, Howard held on for the second position, Craig VonDohren finished in third, Jared Umbenhauer in fourth, and Brett Kressley rounding out the top five finishers.
Modified heat races were won by Brett Kressley, Kevin Hirthler and Brian Hirthler with TJ Lily winning the Modified Consolation.
The NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series returns on Tuesday, July 2 for Pennsylvania Sprint Car Speedweek with $10,000 to win for the 410 Sprint Cars – also on the card, the NASCAR 358 Modifieds. The Eastern Storm is headed to the Design for Vision/Sunglass Central 3/8th mile track at the Bridgeport Speedway on Wednesday, June 12th.
Last year’s event was a huge success. The drivers found the track “racey”. The fans came in droves for the only appearance of the stars of USAC in the state of New Jersey and they did not go home disappointed. In the words of USAC’s Levi Jones, “There was a good crowd who got to see the greatest names in USAC. You can’t ask for it to be much better than that!”
At the end of the night, Kevin Thomas Jr. was the first to the checkered flag after laps of wheel to wheel racing with Chris Windom and Tyler Courtney. Windom and Courtney had swapped the lead back and forth. When the two made contact, Thomas saw his chance and raced into the lead. It was just the opportunity that he was looking for.
So far this season, Chris Windom is the only driver to have repeated in the win column, but it is CJ Leary who sits on top of the point standings , currently 29 points ahead of Kevin Thomas, Jr. and 38 points ahead of Windom. Justin Grant, Leary, Brady Bacon, Tyler Courtney and Chase Stockon have one win a piece coming into the Eastern Storm races.
In addition to the regulars on the USAC tour, race fans will be able to see several local drivers competing in these events.
Joey Biasi recently picked up the win in the USAC East Coast Wingless Sprint Car event on the Design for Vision/Sunglass Central 3/8th mile. Biasi has made it no secret that he really likes this track and his record shows it. In two events, Biasi has a win and a second-place finish.
Biasi is no stranger to Eastern Storm competition. He has competed in these event for several years because, as the driver explains, “You don’t have to have a million dollar engine to compete. Wingless competition is more about the driver driving the car.” Biasi’s sponsors are on board for the Eastern Storm, including B&F General Machine, Burns & Yost Engines, GME Steering, Calaman Radiator, Frank’s Truck Lettering, HG Block Lightning and Dyno, Larry’s Hot Rod & Harleys, Blinders restaurant, Shaup Brothers and Tito Juice. These sponsors are very important to Biasi for monetary as well as product support.
USAC East Coast Wingless Sprint Car Champion, Steve Drevicki will also be in this year’s line-up.
Drevicki is receiving support from Gene Franckowiak, who is supplying the engine. Drevicki will also be receiving some technical support from Clauson & Marshall in what will be his first endeavor in Eastern Storm competition. Drevicki will be using the same car that he uses in wingless competition. He and his team have already done all of the prep work to allow them to change engines with relative ease.
A former two-time ARDC midget competitor, Drevicki believes that the car with the 410-power plant will react more like the midget than the 360-sprint car so he isn’t expecting the change to be a big adjustment.
With the exception of the last event scheduled at Weedsport, the local talent has considerable experience in the tracks that will run during the Eastern Storm.
Grandstand admission for this event is $30, $10 for students 10-15 years old with children 9 and under admitted for Free. Racing will get underway at 7:30pm

Danny Dietrich scores first All Star victory of 2019 during Weedsport Speedway visit
WEEDSPORT, N.Y. (June 9, 2019) - Gettysburg, Pennsylvania’s Danny Dietrich has certainly been on a roll in 2019, and now he can add an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory at Weedsport Speedway to his list of 2019 accomplishments.
Dietrich, driver of the Gary Kauffman Racing/Weikert’s Livestock/Sandoe’s Fruit Market/Pace Performance/Big Cove Whitetail Trophy Hunts/Drop Of Ink Tattoo/Sweeney Cars/Self Made/No. 48 sprint car, put fans on their feet Sunday night in central New York, utilizing a late-race restart to power around Danny Varin with just five circuits remaining. Impressive enough, Dietrich accomplished his feat with a severed component in the rear suspension; a bent w-link.
“We are really starting to like this place,” Danny Dietrich said of Weedsport Speedway, who now owns eight victories in 2019 including his $5,000 All Star Circuit of Champions triumph. “Hats off to this entire team. We are clicking really well right now and the results show. There are so many people that help make all of this possible. Just a surreal feeling right now. Hopefully we can keep this momentum going into next weekend.”
Starting from the outside of row four, Dietrich was not speedy in his pursuit of the top spot, ultimately fading to a position just outside of the top-five during the first few circuits. In fact, Dietrich did not crack into the top three until lap 26 of 35.
During his late-race surge to the top, Dietrich was given some help, as Larry Wright, who was racing just ahead of Dietrich in the runner-up spot, made contact with the outside retaining wall on the 27th circuit, ultimately ending his night. The ensuing caution, which allowed ‘Double-D’ to restart on the tailtank of race leader Danny Varin, created the recipe for Dietrich’s eventual takeover.
Although Dietrich relied on the bottom of the speedway to get to himself that far forward, it was the top that proved to be the winning route. Utilizing momentum, Dietrich used a slingshot move around Weedsport’s cushion to gain command for the first time on lap 30, navigating the narrow edge in turns three and four to eventually work around Varin.
“I knew that is where I needed to be,” Dietrich continued. “[Danny Varin] was pretty good on the bottom, so I knew if I kept my pace up and built some momentum, I’d have a shot at him around the top. That late caution really helped us out. It gave me a chance to move up a lane and use clean air to get around him.”
Danny Varin chased Dietrich to the final checkers, followed by Spencer Bayston, Cory Eliason and Greg Wilson.
With their first New York visit of the season complete, Tony Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions will now turn their focus toward the Buckeye State, set to invade eight facilities in nine days during the 37th edition of Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Indy Metal Finishing. Action will kick-off, officially, on Friday evening, April 14, with a visit to Attica Raceway Park.

BECHTELSVILLE, PA JUNE 9, 2019 . . . . . . . Where oh where will Brady Bacon be with three laps to go?
At the previous two AMSOIL USAC Sprint Eastern Storm events at the Grandview Speedway, Broken Arrow, OK driver Brady Bacon was in the right place at the right time. Bacon, the defending winner of the last two Jesse Hockett Classic events took the lead with just three laps to go in both 40 lap feature events. This Tuesday night, Brady Bacon will attempt the “hat trick” of three wins in a row on the “hill”. This year the Jesse Hockett Classic will pay $10,000 to win so Bacon just may be racing a little harder to get that lead position a little earlier in chase of the biggest payoff of the 13th Annual Eastern Storm.
The AMSOIL USAC sprints will bring a field of talent to the “hill” in chase of the $10,000 to win 40 lap Jesse Hockett Classic. Also on the card will be the NASCAR Modifieds chasing a $3,000 payday for the win in their 30 lap feature. The USAC Sprints will open the show with time trials and a series of qualifying events followed by the Modifieds that will take part in qualifying heats and a consolation. Gates open at 5 PM with qualifying getting underway at 7:30 PM.
Advance tickets may be ordered for the Tuesday, June 11 USAC Sprints & Modified show by calling 443 513 4456. Please speak slowly and clearly when leaving a message and be sure to provide your name and number of tickets you will need. Tickets may be paid for and picked up at the WILL CALL Window on race night after 3:30 PM. Advance ticket holders may entitle you to enter the grandstands at 4:30. Adult admission tickets are $30, children 6 to 11 $10 and children five and under will be admitted for free. Advance tickets may be order until 9:00 AM on Tuesday, June 11. General admission tickets will go on sale at 5 PM at the Grandview Speedway.
Be sure to come out early and be part of the Low, Down & Dirty pre-race activities taking place at the main gate at Grandview Speedway from 5 PM to 6 PM. You’ll have a chance to meet and greet USAC drivers Robert “The Madman” Ballou, Issac Chapple, Timmy Buckwalter and Joey Biasi. See cars and representatives from the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing (EMMR) at Grandview on Tuesday night. The EMMR will have at least two restored Weikert Livestock sprint cars on hand and you are invited to meet the folks from the museum and chat about racings past memories. The EMMR will be located in the first turn grandstand area from 5 to 7 PM with interviews going on from 6 PM to 6:45 PM. Enjoy the memories and become a member of the EMMR and help preserve racing history.
The AMSOIL USAC non-wing sprints come east just once a year and this show at Grandview Speedway is a must see event. These guys make even the time trials exciting, as they bicycle, pull wheelies and send roaster-tails flying high in sky, and that’s with just one car at a time on the race track. The heat races earn the drivers their ticket to start the 40 lap $10,000 to win Jesse Hockett Classic. When the green flag drops in the feature, you won’t know where to watch as the field of twenty-two cars race three abreast, pull off slide jobs, take part in some wheel banging and yes, run countless laps with their rear bumpers inches from the outside boiler-plate. You’ll see all this on the one-third mile high-banked Grandview Speedway on Tuesday night, June 11.

The brainchild of Grandview Speedway owner Bruce Rogers, special events promoter Bob Miller, and local driving star Dave Kelly, the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series celebrates 30 years of the most anticipated events of the racing calendar year after year. In 132 events, over $4.6 million dollars has been divvied up among the area's fastest racers. What started as a single 410 Sprint Car event in 1990 has blossomed to feature a variety of racing action including 358 Modifieds, USAC Wingless Sprints, All-Star Circuit of Champions, 360 & 410 Sprint Cars, Sportsman, Late Models, Midgets, Legend Cars, DIRTcar and ROC Modified events. The 2019 30th Anniversary Series of Thunder on the Hill is dedicated to Bruce Rogers.
About Grandview Speedway
Grandview Speedway is a high-banked one-third mile clay oval, celebrating their 57th Anniversary season in 2019. The facility offers free parking, quality food at reasonable prices (be sure to try the french fries), a program book, Grandview Speedway and Thunder on the Hill racewear and great viewing from every seat in the house. Race fans may take part in the Inside/Out promotion, where you can sign up (no charge) to watch warm-ups from inside turn four. Race fans are also invited to victory lane following the racing program and, race fans may enter the pits after the races to meet the drivers. Be ready to enjoy the spine-tingling fireworks salute on the feature event parade lap.
