Logan Schuchart fends off a hard charging James McFadden to win at Charlotte
Inches before Logan Schuchart claimed his third World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win of the season, he could feel defeat breathing down his neck.
To it, he said, not today. Even with few options to stop it.
Life was close to leaving his right rear tire – a used tire from last year. It seemed inevitable. He claimed the lead with the assist of several drivers blowing a tire during the second night of the $15,000-to-win United Rentals Patriot Nationals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte on Saturday.
That caused Schuchart’s right foot to become wary of the throttle in the closing laps of the Feature.
“I was trying to be kind of conservative and not spin the tires, not run it into the corner very hard, try to not wear the tire very much,” Schuchart said.
A second too long on the throttle or off it handed defeat the win.
That was not an option, though. He had something to lose. The top four in points blew a tire with a handful of laps to go, giving Schuchart the opportunity for a healthy points gain.
Behind him, though, defeat had nothing to lose. Australian James McFadden, running just his second race in the No. 9 Kasey Kahne Racing car, is only driving the car until an injured Kahne is ready to return. Points are of no concern. He’s there to win at no cost.
To McFadden, defeat was in front of him, and he was going to do whatever it took to beat it.
Having blown a tire in the early stage of the race, McFadden managed to stay on the lead lap and use his newly granted right rear grip to blow by anxiety-ridden drivers trying to save their tire.
“We just had nothing to lose, really,” McFadden said. “Everyone was trying to conserve, and I wasn’t.”
With three laps to go, McFadden became the hare chasing tortoises. Due to his carefree ability to run his car as hard as he wanted and several drivers blowing a tire, he went from 16th on Lap 27 to 5th on Lap 28. A lap later he was in the podium.
A caution flew with one lap to go, setting up a green-white-checkered finished. On the start, he blew by Kerry Madsen on the high side to take second. Next became a duel between the Tasmanian devil and the shark.
McFadden had nothing to lose, but Schuchart said he was going to make his Shark Racing car as wide as he could. Coming off turn two on the final lap, McFadden launched off the corner and went from being two car lengths back to on Schuchart’s bumper. Then into the final turn, both drivers threw their car into the turn. McFadden up top. Schuchart on the bottom.
A car length distance grew between the two through turn three, but coming off turn four McFadden had a race winning run. Schuchart knew it. Defeat was breathing down his neck. His only option was to move up a lane, blocking McFadden’s run.
“I knew somebody would be coming, especially the guys who changed their tire,” Schuchart said. “I heard James when we went through (turns) one and two. I just tried to make my car as wide as possible. Definitely if we had another corner, he would have got by me. But it all worked out great.”
McFadden wishes there was that extra corner.
“It was good fun. I wish we had a couple of more laps,” McFadden said. “We were pretty decent there.”
McFadden did earn the hard charger award for the night, after starting 18th. Schuchart had his own impressive charge, coming from 14th to win – the furthest back a driver has come from this year to win.
His win leaves him fifth in points – 136 points behind leader Donny Schatz. It was more than a 20-point gain from the night before.
Schatz ended the race 11th, after being three laps from victory before blowing a tire. Brad Sweet, who sits second in points – 42 points behind Schatz – also blew a tire after taking the lead from Schatz, finishing 18th.
Schuchart’s right rear tire resembled an asphalt modified tire more than a Sprint Car tire after the 31-lap Feature, making he and his team shake their head on how it survived.
“I knew I had a lot more rubber than the other cars, just by looking at them and when I go into the corner the last five laps it just felt like it wanted to drive right by them,” Schuchart said. “I don’t know why. This thing [the tire] was used. I’m pretty sure it was up in the rack from last year. So, maybe if it sits for a while it adds something to it.
“I actually wasn’t real happy with the tire being put on before the race, but it lasted and it got us the win.”
With defeat breathing down his neck, Schuchart and his used – now very used – right rear tire said, not today.

STRUNK AND MOHR GET MONKEY OFF THEIR BACK WITH NASCAR FEATURE WINS AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY SATURDAY NIGHT
BECHTELSVILLE, PA. May 26, 2019 . . . After three consecutive weeks of being towed off the track as a victim of circumstances, ten-time Grandview Speedway point champion Jeff Strunk finally got the monkey off his back and parked the Glenn and Bonita Hyneman-owned/Tabloid Graphics/Teo No. 126 in victory lane at the conclusion of the 30-lap TP Trailers NASCAR 358 Modified feature on Saturday night at Grandview for his first triumph of the year.
It was an emotional win for the Boyertown leadfoot as he thanked everyone for the patience and for sticking by him in the roller-coaster ride of the struggling team. It wasn’t a totally drama-free night for them since they were experiencing fuel pump system problems and he was just thankful no cautions came out once he had the lead after several laps of side-by-side racing earlier with rookie Mike Lisowski.
Nathan Mohr also had Lady Luck on his side in and got rid of the gremlins to cop his first win of the season in the TP Truck Equipment 25-lap Sportsman NASCAR feature. The previous week while leading the race, engine problems sidelined him erasing his chance at a possible win. The week the East Greenville driver led from the drop of the green until the wave of the checkered. He had to endure lap traffic and restarts to pull off the win, but he had no easy time accomplishing the feat as first he dueled with rookie Joey Vaccaro, then Kenny Bock and finally runner-up Brad Brightbill.
Providing all feature winners met the necessary requirements, the Modified and Sportsman feature winner got monetary awards from TP Trailers and a certificate from VP Fuels for product awards. Lisowski and Mohr won the Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award.
Richie Hitzler, also a rookie, motored into the early lead with another rookie Steve Wilson, Lisowski, Danny Erb and Ryan Lilick in pursuit.
The yellow was out with seven laps in the books when Ray Swinehart slowed along the homestretch after contact with Tim Buckwalter which put him out of contention and Swinehart continued The restart was brought back to the line when Wilson spun between turns three and four and triggered a chain reaction-type multi-car pile-up that eliminated last week’s runner-up Skylar Sheriff, Kevin Hirthler and Clay Butler. When action went green again Lisowski was the new pacesetter trailed by Strunk, Hitzler, Erb and Louden Reimert. A blanket could have been thrown over third through fifth since that’s how close they were running. Trying to get into the mix was last week’s winner Brett Kressley.
Lisowski and Strunk battled side-by-side for numerous laps and it wasn’t until lap 19 that Strunk put the Ray Carroll-powered mount into the lead.
Strunk built up a commanding lead by the 23rd lap, but at the same time encountered lap traffic and had to use heads up driving with the top five now comprised of Lisowski, Kressley, Erb, Alex Yankowski and Doug Manmiller.
No one was able to reel Strunk in to even attempt to challenge and he went on to record Saturday night career win number 70. Chasing him across the line were Kressley, Lisowski, who also had a change of luck; Yankowski, recipient of the Hard Charger award and Manmiller. Sixth through tenth were Erb, Jared Umbenhauer, Ryan Grim, Reimert and Rick Laubach.
Reimert, Von Dohren, Howard and Strunk were the heat winners. Consies were won by Umbenhauer and Craig Whitmoyer.
Sportsman action saw polesitter Mohr pull away quickly leaving rookies Joey Vaccaro and Scott Kohler along with Bock and Derrick Smith dice for the remaining positions.
By the ½-way marker the top five comprised of Mohr, Vaccaro, Kohler, Bock and Andy Clemmer encountered lap traffic.
The first caution of the race was on the 18th lap when Mike Mammana, who had just taken over fifth, stopped in the second turn. It was still Mohr first on the restart with Bock now challenging trailed by Vaccaro, Brightbill and Brad Arnold.
Clemmer brought out the next yellow when he spun along the front stretch. A yuke tire out on the track erased the next restart. A massive tangle caused by an impatient driver trying to advance by rubbing and pushing his way front further voided the next attempt. This action caused the decision to go to a single file restart. It was now a side-by-side battle for first between Mohr, Bock and Brightbill followed by Arnold and Brad Grim just waiting for a slip-up.
Mohr was able to hold off all the competition to post his second career win his last victory being the Summer Splash 40 June 23, 2018. Finishing second was Brightbill, who overtook that spot on the 22nd lap, Bock, Arnold and Grim. Jack Butler, Brian Hirthler, last week’s winner and also the highest finishing crate engine again this week that earned him an extra $100; Ryan Beltz, Kohler and Kyle Lilick rounded out the top ten.
Heats were won by Mammana, Mohr and Kohler. Mark Kemmerer won the consi.
Next Saturday, June 1, a tripleheader card of racing action will be presented starting at 7:30 p.m. Included in the night of excitement will be the T.P.Trailers NASCAR Modifieds, T.P.Truck Equipment Sportsman and the first time appearance of the Central PA Legends. All that racing offered at the same low price of $15 for adults while youngsters under 12 are admitted FREE. Spectator gates open at 5:30 p.m.

LIEDTKA SAILS TO A WIN AT NEW EGYPT SPEEDWAY
New Egypt, NJ (May 26, 2019) – At New Egypt Speedway’s Fan Appreciation Night presented by Hammer Electric, Bill Liedtka sailed away from his rivals to win the NES vs. the World Street Stock Challenge. Steve Davis topped the field in the Hammer Sportsman feature. The Larry's Hot Rods & Harley's Northeast Wingless Sprint Car main event went to Rich Mellor. Joe Garey Sr. was victorious in the Mike’s Performance 4-Cylinder race while Zachary Merola took the checkered flag in the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman race.
As the 20-lap NES vs. the World Street Stock Challenge got underway, Bill Liedtka sped to the front with Jimmy Avery and Billy Wroble next in line. With five tours recorded, Liedtka had a comfortable advantage over Avery and Mick Search. As Liedtka was increasing his margin, Avery and Search were battling for second and Search became the winner of the duel on the eighth circuit. At the halfway mark, Liedtka’s lead was a full straightaway over Search. With five revolutions left, Liedtka was beginning to close in on the tail end of the field. As the two laps remaining signal was given to the drivers, Liedtka had cleared the traffic. In the final laps, Liedtka was able to complete the non-stop event in front of the pack for his second win of the year. The victory was Liedtka’s twenty-eighth in the division. Search finished in the runner-up spot with Avery taking third. Wroble was fourth and Brian Ludwig completed the race in fifth.
After taking the lead from Joseph Brown on lap eight, Steve Davis remained in control to win the 20-lap Hammer Sportsman feature. Polesitter Jason Kosch set the pace for the opening five tours before Joseph Brown became the new leader. Davis, who started the contest in ninth, passed Brown for first place on a restart following a lap seven caution. A strong run by tenth place starting David Burns netted him a second place finish. Third place was claimed by Bob Lineman Jr. Art Liedl and Jim Housworth rounded out the top five. The Hammer Sportsman heat races were captured by Jason Kosch and Art Liedl.
For the third consecutive time in the Larry's Hot Rods & Harley's Northeast Wingless Sprint Car division, Rich Mellor scored the checkered flag in the 20-lap main event. Mellor took command of the race from the early pacesetter Larry Drake on lap six and never relinquished the top running position. The victory was the fourth of the year for Mellor. Second place was snared by Heidi Hedin. Veteran racer Stan Ploski was third. Drake held on to finish in fourth. After a visit to the pits on lap eight, Jermain Godshall battled back to take fifth. Jermain Godshall and Stan Ploski won the Larry's Hot Rods & Harley's Northeast Wingless Sprint Car qualifying races.
In the 15-lap contest for the Mike’s Performance 4-Cylinders, Joe Garey Sr. inched by Robby Dunn just before the finish line to win his second feature of the season and eighth of his career. With Dunn taking second, Mike Fox was third. Joe Garey Jr. was fourth and Jimmy Avery was fifth.
Zachary Merola led from start to finish to claim the 8-lap Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman race. The win was the first of the year for Merola. Anthony Tramontana Jr., the current point leader, came home in second. Ryan Krushinski and DJ Hunt rounded out the finishing order.
On Saturday, June 1, the 3rd Annual Salute to Our Veterans 40 marches into New Egypt Speedway. The Vahlco Wheels Modifieds will be in action in an extra distance 40-lap main event, in honor of our armed forces, paying $3,000 to win and $300 to start. The Larry's Hot Rods & Harley's Northeast Wingless Sprint Cars, Crate Modifieds, Mike's Performance Center 4-Cylinders & Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie Sportsman are on the docket as well. On this special night, all military personnel will be admitted to the main grandstand for free with proper identification. The pit gates swing open at 4:00 p.m. and the grandstand ticket window opens at 5:00 p.m. Hot laps start at 6:00 p.m. with the first green flag waving at 7:00 p.m. Admission to the grandstand is $22 for adults, $20 for seniors 65 and older, $12 for teens 12-15 and kids 11 & under are FREE. Pit admission is $30 with a New Egypt Speedway license and $40 without.

MAURIELLO AND COSS TAKE EMOTIONAL WALL MODIFIED WINS
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ All American Auto Group Modified stock car drivers Eric Mauriello of Brick and Roger Coss of Lafayette earned highly emotional wins at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. Mauriello's Memorial Day weekend triumph came in a car that prominently featured the American Flag while Coss' win came in a car owned by the family of his late car-owner Jeff Willet. Willet passed away after a battle with cancer just a few weeks ago.
In the first main event, rain postponed from May 11, Toms River's Derek Hopkinson jumped to the lead and fought off Jackson's Steven Reed and Mauriello in the early going. Mauriello advanced to first near lap 40 and then fought off Ron Frees of Lanoka Harbor, Hopkinson and Reed to the finish. Andrew Krause of Holmdel was fifth.
“Steve Ferrara and the entire team really believe that this weekend is about all who gave their lives for our country,” Mauriello said. “I am proud to drive a car that looks like this on this weekend and even more proud to put it in the winner's circle.”
Like the first Modified main event the second one was also a slug fest with Brick's Dom Fattaruso leading the way early. Joey Merlino of Pine Hill soon took his turn at the front before Neptune's Chris Andretta took command before half way. Andretta fought off Merlino in the middle of the 40-lap race before Mauriello advanced to second for the final quarter of the event.
Mauriello then tried hard to make it a clean sweep on the night but spun exiting turn two with three laps remaining. Coss then advanced to second on the restart and charged to the front when Andretta's car stumbled exiting turn four. Andretta, Fattaruso, Shaun Carrig of Little Falls and Mauriello wrapped up the top five.
“This win is for Jeff Willet,” Coss said upon exiting his car. “Jeff and his family have done a lot for me and for everyone in this sport over the years. I miss him very much. This win is for Jeff.”
Carsten DiGiantomasso of Jackson won his second Center State Engineering Sportsman 25-lapper of the young season as Christian LaCicero of Lavallette fought off Jarret DiGiantomasso of Jackson for second. Micheal Rising of Little Egg Harbor and Brick's Robert Sutphin were fourth and fifth.
Howell's Rob Silver took the lead early and never looked back in the 25-lapper for the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars. Sean Verwys of Stroudsburg, Pa., Peter Bruno of Little Silver, Jim Downey of Cliffwood Beach and Joe Przybylinski of Fairfield were second through fifth.
Jackson's Shanon Mongeau won the 25-lapper for the Mike's Performance Center Limited Late Models over Chris Silvestri of Hazlet. Jim Moorman of Brooklawn, Jackson's Greg Gastelu and Michelle Moorman completed the top five.
Joey Bailey won the 25-lap race for the visiting Three Quarter Midgets over Buddy Sload and Ryan Tidman.
The 2019 Saturday night regular season continues this Saturday (June 1) evening with the Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks racing in twin 25-lap main events while the O'Shea's Auto Repair Factory Stocks, Sportsman cars and the Limited Late Models all compete in single 25-lap feature races. Demolition Derby action will also be featured for the first time this season.
The “Pack the Track” night card will feature a $10 admission for all adults while student admission is just $5. On this “Carnival Night“ grandstands will open at 5:00 p.m. Qualifying starts at 5:45 p.m. and main event action starts at 7:00 p.m.

Hafertepe Makes It Three In A Row With The Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series
Bryan Hulbert - ELDON, Mo. (May 25, 2019) Dominating one week ago in Michigan, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. carried that momentum into Missouri for his third win in as many races with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network coming at Lake Ozark Speedway on Saturday night.
"Hats off to my guys. They did a hell of a job tonight, just like they've been doing all year long. That's three in a row and we're going to keep on going. Lock-in cars or not, we're going to try to get it done tomorrow night," commented Hafertepe, who has taken command of the National Tour point standings by 14 markers.
High point driver out of the Heat Races, the Heidbreder Foundation No. 15h drew the fourth starting spot for the 25 lap affair. Chasing John Carney II and Evan Martin on the first lap, the caution flew working lap two as John Schulz, Alex Hill, and Austin Alumbaugh all came to a rest in the second turn. Throwing a deep slide in the restart, Hafertepe took the battle three deep off the fourth turn to grab the lead on the second lap.
Pulling a considerable lead on the field, Hafertepe began finding slower traffic as the race progressed past Lap 10. Running top shelf around the Lake Ozark Speedway, Hafertepe's lead started going the other way with every passing turn as the Danny Sander Construction No. J2 of John Carney II worked patiently around the hub of the Speedway.
Closing the gap to mere car lengths, Carney tried for the lead on Lap 13, but without enough pull off the fourth turn, showed Hafertepe the line and allowed the No. 15h to transition off the cushion just before the caution lights clicked on for Bryan Grimes. Green for another lap, the yellow flag flew as Matt Covington made contact with Roger Crockett racing for third; spinning the No. 95 down the back straightaway.
Overtaken by Roger Crockett on the restart with a middle groove pass in the first and second turn, Carney slipped to third as the Route 66 Chevrolet of Tulsa No. 11 worked on keeping pace with Sam Hafertepe, Jr. Both working varying low lines, with Hafertepe a car width higher on the track, Sam again built a comfortable advantage only to have a caution dash his momentum while working Lap 23.
Red for Matt Covington on the restart, the field took the green for the final time with a three-lap dash seeing Hafertepe win by 2.647 seconds.

Asked about the late race caution and red, Sam explained, "It's tough to know where to be. I felt really good on the top in three and four and that's really where I wanted to stay, but I didn't want open the lane with three to go with those guys causing the cautions and reds at the end. It really gets you guessing."
Roger Crockett held on for second with the race for third going three-wide off the final turn with John Carney II taking the spot by 0.166 seconds with a high side pass on Miles Paulus, who was the night's hard charger coming from 17th to fourth, and Evan Martin to complete the top five.
Eldon, Missouri's Kory Bales advanced nine spots to sixth with Sean McClelland moving from 10th to seventh. Racing as high as fourth in the late stages of the A-Feature, the final restart saw Jonathan Cornell slip back to eighth with Kaley Gharst and Jordon Mallett making up the top ten.
A field of 33 drivers was on hand for Night 1 of the Lake Ozark Speedway Spring 360 Nationals. Four SCE Gaskets Heat Races went to Roger Crockett, Sam Hafertepe, Jr., John Carney II, and Jonathan Cornell. A pair of BMRS B-Features were topped by Miles Paulus and Randy Martin. Owner Point Provisionals were used by Jamie Ball and Robbie Price. A Promoter's Provisional was given to Steven Russell.
Racing this weekend continues at Lake Ozark Speedway on Sunday, May 26 with races getting underway at 7:30 P.M. (CT). Tickets for Sunday, May 6 are $25 for Reserved Seats, $22 for General Admission, $20 for Senior and Military, and free for kids eight and under. SCELZI IMPRESSES WITH STUNNING WIN
Giovanni Scelzi beats NASCAR’s Kyle Larson to win first night of the United Rentals Patriot Nationals in Charlotte
A gasp echoed over the field of 24 thunderous Sprint Cars raging around the 4/10-mile Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Goliath fell. David won.
Seventeen-year-old Giovanni Scelzi did the unthinkable. He passed a dominate Kyle Larson in the closing laps of night one of the United Rentals Patriot Nationals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Friday night. In doing so, he claimed his second World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win.
“That’s so cool,” said Scelzi, choosing his words with hesitation, as those having to convince himself it actually happened. “I can’t believe I got by him. Normally when he (Larson) gets away, he’s gone.”
Larson – still riding the momentum of his $1 million NASCAR All-Star win – showed no signs of rust in a Sprint Car by Qualifying fourth, finishing second in his Drydene Heat race and winning the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash.
With all of the attention on Larson, Scelzi quietly pieced together a competitive run. He also finished second in his Drydene Heat race and finished runner-up to Larson in the Dash.
When the 30-lap Feature went green, Larson left Scelzi to play with Brad Sweet and David Gravel for second-place. In the early stage of the race, Gravel looked to be the one potential car to challenge Larson, charging his way from fourth to second by lap four.
Scelzi shutdown Gravel’s hope of another win the next lap with a slide job through turns one and two to reclaim second. Gravel made the same move the next lap, but Scelzi outpowered the No. 41 car again through turns three and four.
By the time Scelzi returned to second, Larson was gone. Riding the high side of the speedway, the No. 57 of Larson became a speck in the cloud of dust to Scelzi. However, the teenager’s duel with Gravel taught him a lesson.
“David passed me and when I got by him, I knew it was time to go to the top,” Scelzi said.
Moving to the top kept Scelzi on pace with Larson, but as the track began to rubber up, he moved a lane down again. His lane transitions proved beneficial. With about eight laps to go, Larson went from being a speck to a full frame picture. The NASCAR winner slid up off his line through turn two, making the back end step out and scrubbed off speed.
That gave Scelzi the advantage through turns one and two. He darted underneath Larson down the backstretch and slid by him in turns three and four to officially take the lead with five laps to go.
“I caught him in the rubber, and it looked like he was still searching, and I had the perfect opportunity to pull the trigger,” Scelzi said. “I figured he’d chop me, but he’s a very clean racer.”
From there, Larson had nothing for the Fresno, Calif. native. Instead he had to fend off a hard charging Logan Schuchart, who came from seventh-place to third.
“Second is always a good spot to be because you can see the leader struggling and make your move, which Gio did.” Larson said. “I made a mistake through that corner, I just go arched out too much and got the car bent and then I lost my right rear grip, which didn’t help for my exit speed.”
While Schuchart was happy with his strong run, he left knowing it could have been better. He said he needs to get better at Qualifying up front more to put himself in position to start further up front and have a better shot at the win.
His finish leaves him fifth in the Series’ points standings – 158 points behind leader Donny Schatz. The 10-time Series champion currently sits 28 points ahead of second-place Brad Sweet.
The finish to the opening night of the inaugural United Rentals Patriot Nationals left many fans stunned, but it’s not the first time Scelzi has pulled off an astonishing feat. Last year, he became the youngest ever World of Outlaws winner, at 16 years old, by winning his first Series race at the historic Williams Grove Speedway.
This time though, he had extra attention. NASCAR attention.
In the grandstands, the likes of Bubba Wallace, Ryan Blaney and Jeff Gordon watched on. While on the track, he had to compete with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Larson.
When the helmet goes on, Scelzi said he’s just focused on the race, but he hopes his run gained him a little more attention.
“Man, I’d like to be over across the street at the NASCAR track,” Scelzi said. “But who knows. I’m having a ball racing Sprint Cars. I’m just happy being here.
The crowd of thousands at the Charlotte dirt track knew the NASCAR names. When Larson was announced at the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash draw, the bleachers erupted into emphatic cheers. Scelzi was greeted with golf claps.
When he pulled into Victory Lane ahead of Larson that changed. Standing atop the wing of his car, taller than Goliath, those emphatic cheers became his.
Larson fell. Scelzi won.

Aaron Reutzel gets All Stars back on track with $5,000 victory at Attica Raceway Park
ATTICA, Ohio (May 24, 2019) - It has been nearly six weeks since the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 last made a competitive lap, but despite the frustrating stretch of poor weather resulting in a long gap in the schedule, Clute, Texas’ Aaron Reutzel never missed a beat, quickly resuming his role as defending All Star champion and current point leader by earning a first-ever Attica Raceway Park victory on Friday night for a $5,000 payday.
Although dominate during the second half of the 40-lap program, eventually crossing under the final checkers by a margin of victory pushing three seconds, the pilot of the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports entry was forced to chase fellow All Star full-timer, Brock Zearfoss, for the first 21 circuits. It was not until lap 22 when Zearfoss, who was attempting to navigate heavy lapped traffic, hooked a rut and spun all alone at the front of the field.
Zearfoss’ mistake was an obvious lucky break for Reutzel, but the reigning Series champion was in close proximity of the top spot up until that point, actually earning command for a brief stint after a caution on lap 13. Reutzel’s slide job attempt during the ensuing restart failed, but the Texan never lost track of the Premier Motorsports entry.
When the 40-lap main event’s dust finally settled, it was Penngrove, California’s Buddy Kofoid who chased Reutzel to the final checkers, followed by Cap Henry, Shawn Dancer, and the ‘Wild Child’ Jac Haudenschild. The victory, his first of the 2019 season during All Star competition, bumps Reutzel’s All Star win total to ten all-time.
“We had a really great race car here tonight. Grant and the guys have been busting their butts in trying to make me better at these tracks in Ohio, Attica included,” Aaron Reutzel explained, driver of the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports/Folkens Brothers Trucking/Fisher Body Shop/No. 87 sprint car. “I felt like we could make good laps here. Luckily, we started up front and didn’t get caught up with Brock’s [Zearfoss] spin. I’m happy that we were able to capitalize on our starting position this time.”
After inheriting the top spot on lap 22, Reutzel’s next challenge was in the form of lapped traffic, eventually coming into play for the first time for the new leader on lap 28. Buddy Kofoid, who started second on the grid, but faded to third after the initial start, was starting to make up ground on Reutzel as the traffic started to intensify. The California phenom chased Reutzel down to a car length by lap 33, soon pulling even with the familiar No. 87 at the entrance of turn one on the following circuit. Despite the effort, Reutzel’s championship-earning experience with traffic proved to be too strong, as a bold, three-wide move to split a pair of slower cars sealed his winning fate.
Although Reutzel was able to stretch his late-race advantage to nearly a straightaway, utilizing the very topside of the speedway, an uncooperative lapped car nearly caused a similar fate that Zearfoss faced. Luckily for Reutzel, his outcome was different.
“That last lap, I had a lap car change lanes on me and that had me all mixed up. It wasn’t his fault, he didn’t know I was there. Luckily, I was able to maintain control and not spit out, because that’s what I thought was going to happen,” Aaron Reutzel continued. “You gotta go whenever you’re leading like that. Racing with Brock early in the race and watching him in traffic allowed me to know where to go when I was leading.”
“He’s always fast wherever he goes,” Buddy Kofoid said, driver of the Gill Construction/CK Plumbing/No. 11N. “I gave it everything we got, but we came up one short. So far, this is four podiums in a row for this team at Attica. We’ve been in every finishing position except the one Aaron is in right now, but we’ll keep working and try again soon.”
Tony Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions will continue their Memorial Day weekend trek through the Buckeye State with a stop at ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval’ - Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio - on Saturday evening, May 25. Like Attica Raceway Park, the visit to Wayne County will award a $5,000 payday.
Certainly not the first and only visit to Orrville this season, the traveling All Stars will return to Wayne County Speedway on three more occasions, twice during the 2019 installment of Ohio Sprint Speedweek.
Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio, will open pit gates at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 25. A mandatory All Star Circuit of Champions drivers meeting will be conducted at 5 p.m., with hot laps to follow at 5:45 p.m. Additional news and notes can be found online at www.waynecountyspeedway.com.
