Gravel rides low groove to victory for Jason Johnson Racing’s first World of Outlaws win since Johnson’s death
HANFORD, CA – MARCH 29, 2019 – Nothing was going to stop David Gravel from jumping out of his car.
Out of breath with a wide grin on his face, he high-fived and hugged his crew members while en route to a bath of confetti when he stood on the back of his car and pointed to the sky.
Not only was he celebrating his first win of the season at Keller Auto Speedway, his 40th World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win and his first win with his new Jason Johnson Racing team, he honored the man whose car he drives.
This is the first win for the Jason Johnson Racing team since co-owner and driver Jason Johnson died in a crash last June at Beaver Dam Raceway in Wisconsin.
“It’s definitely special,” said Gravel, almost lost for words.
The start of his night did not signal a potential victory, with the luck of the draw sending him out last for qualifying. He managed a 15th-place qualifying effort on a track several drivers called “tricky” due to its slick condition.
It didn’t take long for Gravel to figure out the trick, winning his Heat race.
“It really set us up for the rest of the night,” Gravel said. “I knew the bottom was going to be a factor.”
Gravel’s crew chief, Philip Dietz, said Gravel called his shot before the Feature. He was going to stick to the bottom until he figured it out. And he did.
Starting from the pole, Sheldon Haudenschild shot to the early lead of the Feature, riding the high side of the slick track. While he led, the hoard of drivers behind him were rarely in the same lane or position lap after lap. They tried high. They tried low. Wherever there was grip, they made sure to use up every inch of it.
Closing in on halfway through the 35-lap Feature, the bottom proved to be the preferred line of choice. Shane Stewart, who faced heart-break last race at the Stockton Dirt Track after blowing a tire while leading with five laps to go, looked to have his sight set on redemption, reeling in the 2017 Rookie of the Year.
Stewart took the lead on lap 20, but his hope for redemption was short lived as Gravel had been working the bottom of the track to perfection and was not far behind. He took the lead from Stewart – driving for Gravel’s former team, CJB Motorsports – two laps later.
“Honestly, I just didn’t have the patients to run the bottom in turns 1 and 2,” said Stewart, who ended up third. “Driver instincts, you just don’t know what to do at times. Once David went by me, I tried to run the bottom again, and missed it a couple of times. I thought I should get back up to the top and then (Daryn) Pittman got me.”
Pittman, who extended his points lead over second-place Donny Schatz to 12 points by finishing second, was still all smiles after his third runner-up finish of the year.
“I would have never guessed from the beginning of that race that we would be just putting around the bottom,” Pittman said. “We were not set up for that at all. I honestly thought the top would stay dominate. It never crossed my mind that we would be running the bottom.”
Like he planned it himself, Gravel said he knew other drivers would burn off the top of the track and the bottom would be the dominate line. He just had to stay patient enough to remain there throughout the race.
Although he did go to the top one lap, but he said that was only because the bottom was crowded. He ran his race.
“I was just trying to run my line,” Gravel said. “I knew if I missed up one corner and was still in the lead, I knew I wouldn’t have gotten passed if I just hit my marks after that. Luckily we were able to hang on and win.”
It was a special win to him and his crew.
“It’s definitely different,” said Tyler Elliott, the car chief for the Jason Johnson Racing team. “It’s not the same. But it’s exciting. Overwhelming.”
After three races in-a-row without a top-10 finish, Elliot said the win is well needed.
Dietz added its “definitely an emotional night” for the team.
“This is one track we’ve struggled at over the years,” he said. “We knew we had to up our game when we came in tonight. To go out and pick up a win for JJR and all of our sponsors, you know, we couldn’t ask for a better night."
Nothing was going to stop Dietz and the Jason Johnson team from celebrating in Victory Lane with an out of breath and wide grinning Gravel.
The Series will wrap up its Spring Break tour through California Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway in Perris, Calif.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - Backing up a dominant performance from the previous night, Logan Seavey doubled down and took a second consecutive Turnpike Challenge victory. Seavey's second Turnpike Challenge POWRi Lucas Oil National & West Midget League victory came again at I-44 Riverside Speedway.
Starting inside the second row behind Cannon McIntosh and Jerry Coons, Jr., Seavey fell in behind Jerry Coons at the start of the race. Coons, Jr. looked to have the upper hand early on until coming up on lap traffic in which Ace McCarthy spun and Coons, Jr. took a direct hit, crushing his hopes of a Turnpike Challenge victory.
Benefitting from Coons, Jr.'s misfortune, Seavey took command of the top position and never looked back. Shortly after midway, a strong Tyler Thomas moved into the second position with Christopher Bell in tow. A much different night than last night for Thomas, switching to a backup machine paid dividends to the Oklahoman, as he was able to not only place on the podium, but also fend off Christopher Bell's advances for the second position.
Bell was forced to settle for second as Thomas took second behind Seavey, while Tucker Klaasmeyer improved one position from the previous night to take fourth. Jake Neuman finished fifth.
"Being that tonight was a lot smoother than last night, I didn't have to work so hard to get up front in the feature," commented Logan Seavey. "Once we got up front, this thing was just so good. Another really physical race track, you're out of breath bouncing through the holes. It makes it really fun, gives it a lot of character. I can't thank the KKM team for the opportunity and Toyota and Mobil 1 for backing me. It's always fun when you can race your teammates close like that. I knew I just couldn't make mistakes."
"It feels really good," stated Tyler Thomas. "After last night we didn't feel like we were as strong as we could be. It's uncharacteristic for us run in the back like that so we decided to make a change with the car and pull the backup down and it was obviously the right decision. My dad did a really good job setting it up tonight and this Toyota power plant was really good. Spike Chassis, Advanced Racing Suspensions, Engler Machine and Tool, all these guys help us run up front."
"It was tough," said Christopher Bell. "Obviously the beginning of the night didn't go as planned. The track was really tough. It got pretty rough getting into turn one. It made it interesting. Thank you to the fans for coming out and hopefully we put a good show on tomorrow."

Seavey Dethrones Bell at I-44

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - In what was a fairytale ending for Logan Seavey, the Californian was finally able to hold off Christopher Bell and end a streak that may very well go down in history unmatched. Bell looked to go 10 for 10 in Turnpike Challenge competition, but Seavey had other hopes and took his first career Turnpike Challenge victory with the POWRi Lucas Oil National & West Midget League.
Starting on the pole, Seavey led the field to green at I-44 Riverside Speedway, sharing the front row with eventual third place finisher, Hank Davis. While Bell started deep in the field in 14th, he immediately went to work and was up to fifth by mid-way. As Seavey meticulously worked the track and navigated traffic, Bell continued to push forward.
Earning every inch of real estate he took, Bell battled past Blake Hahn and with six to go and set his sights on Hank Davis for second. As the laps wound down, Bell worked past Davis and set Seavey in his crosshairs. With only a handful of laps remaining, it was up to both drivers to minimize any mistakes in hopes of capturing victory. Coming to the white flag, it looked like Bell might have a shot, but Seavey proved to be too strong.
In as many as the previous two seasons, Seavey has tried to dethrone Bell, most recently in 2018's Turnpike Challenge in which Seavey took runner up both nights. In 2019, at least one night will go home with a driver besides Bell. Hank Davis finished in third after starting outside the front row, while Blake Hahn advanced to fourth. Zeb Wise completed the top five.
"I'm glad he was able to get up there and at least race me, even if it was only for a lap," stated Logan Seavey. "It wouldn't have felt as good if he didn't get second and at least give me a shot for the lead. It's cool to know we beat him straight up. We tried for so long. I have to thank the Chris Bell fan on the backstretch because the harder he cheered, I knew he was getting close and I knew I had to hit my marks on the bottom. It's just so tough to beat this guy and hopefully we can get it done again tomorrow."
"I'm glad we were able to put on a show for the fans," said Christopher Bell. "Obviously I'm disappointed to break the streak, but you can't win them all and to run second to my teammate who has been pushing me around for a couple of these races is good. The racetrack was really hard, very technical and fun to race. Ultimately, just stated too far back."
"It's pretty unreal," commented Hank Davis. "Yes, we got beat, but those are probably the best two to get beat by. I couldn't be more happy, honestly. We've been struggling with motor and brakes this weekend and just kind of tough to get going. If we could get a good restart, we might have been able to hang, but we just got our doors blown off."

Bell Remains Undefeated in Turnpike Competition

Sapulpa, Oklahoma - Heading into the Sixth Annual Turnpike Challenge featuring POWRi Lucas Oil National and West Midget League competition, Christopher Bell would have been a safe bet for the victor heading into tonight's race at Creek County Speedway. And that safe money bet would have paid off; Christopher Bell is now nine for nine in Turnpike Competition.
While the opening night of four straight nights of racing presented a challenge, as this was the inaugural visit of the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League to Creek County Speedway, Bell proved he is always up for a challenge as he took a dominating heat race win. Ever determined, Bell set his sights on the ultimate prize, another Turnpike Challenge victory.
Starting inside row two, Bell immediately jumped to second and set his sights on race leader and pole sitter, Tanner Carrick. As the duo approached traffic, Bell showed his hand and tossed a slider at Carrick, but Carrick returned. Another circuit later and heading into turn one, both Carrick and Bell went for the same real estate on the bottom and their Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports entries collided, sending Carrick to an abrupt stop.
With Bell inheriting the lead, the race was his to lose. Enduring several yellows and one red flag, Bell held off a determined Zeb Wise and later fended off a late race charge by Logan Seavey. As the laps wound down, Seavey's determination to get past Bell got the best of him, allowing Wise to regain control of the second position. Seavey took third with Tyler Thomas in fourth. Defending POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League champion Tucker Klaasmeyer rounded out the top five after charging to the front from deep in the field starting in the 23rd position.
"That was a lot of fun," said Christopher Bell. "I felt really bad about me and Carrick getting together getting into turn one. I had no idea he was to the inside of me there, just racing with lap traffic. This track was tough. The ledge got built up really tall so it was very difficult to go up there and run consistent laps. I've just got to say thanks to Keith, Pete, Big Al, Chuckie, and everyone that works on these things. They do a really great job. Obviously, we have really fast racecars to drive, so that makes my job easier."
"I knew Chris was going to be the star of the show and that's who we have to beat," Zeb Wise commented. "Near mid race we were kind of hanging with him and then Seavey got by me. We were able to get Seavey picked back off there at the end but just not enough laps. These Clauson Marshall guys had the Drive2Save Lives Sun Dollar 39BC hooked up tonight. They worked their butt off for me and to stand up here on the podium is pretty special."
"I'm just disappointed," stated Logan Seavey. "I had such a good racecar. I drove up to second and then I just didn't run very good laps. I had a good run on him one time and should have thrown a slider, but didn't. I just kept missing the bottom in one and two and then that was about it for me. These guys brought me such a good racecar and it fires me up since it seems like I'm always racing Christopher for the win in these and we have three more nights to give it a go."

Nothing would make Oley, PA’s Louden Reimert happier than to do well, exceptionally well, maybe even win the VP Racing Fuels Bruce Rogers Money Maker Classic, a 50-lapper featuring many of the best area talents in 358 Modifieds and Big Block Modifieds, at Grandview Speedway on Saturday, April 6th at 7 p.m.
In addition to getting a big share of the lucrative prize money, close to $50,000 being offered, it would be a great way to kick off the celebration of his 18th birthday that is coming up.
The young racer who won the 2018 NASCAR T.P.Truck Equipment Sportsman championship using consistency, will be a full time racer on in the Grandview Speedway T.P.Trailers 358 Modified division. He is anxious for the season to start.
In fact he did get his season started a couple weeks back when he traveled to Syracuse, NY and won an indoor Len Sammons produced Slingshot race.
Reimert has tested the waters in 358 Modifieds and run last year in the first Rogers Memorial and in the rich Freedom 76 Classic. He qualified and did well racing against some of the top names in the business.
The personable young racing talent comes from a family of racing people. One grandfather bought him his first quarter midget and got him on his way. He has watched as his father Shawn performed well, five career feature wins, with the Modifieds at Grandview. And Grandfather Terry was a talented racer at the Bechtelsville, PA clay oval. Even Mom is behind the scenes doing her part to help the team.
Reimert is very excited about this season as is the team as they have a good car and motor provided by owner Doug Flurer who has provided equipment for such standouts over the years as Jason Hamilton, Rick Laubach and others.
Still in school taking vocational classes in machining he also works at Christman’s Meat Market, a name well known in the sport. All the free time is spent with the team working on the race car.
Sponsorship support will come from Kochel Equipment, a longtime supporter of the Reimert family racing activities, Rhoad’s Brothers Livestock and Christman’s Meat Market plus others.
Though Louden is looking to race in events at other tracks, and effort to improve his racing skills, his main effort will be at NASCAR sanctioned Grandview Speedway and it all gets started with the $7,500 to win VP Racing Fuels Bruce Rogers Money Maker Memorial on April 6th which will see him pitted up against many top talents. This race does not carry a NASCAR sanction and is open to both 358 and Big Block Modifieds. Every racer making the main event will earn at least $1,000.
Also attracting a lot of attention will be a strong field of the popular Sportsman stock cars making up the second part of this special doubleheader event. The winner of this event walks off with $750 and each driver to make the starting field will earn $125.
Those wishing to register for the Rogers Memorial, there is no license required and no entry fee, can do that by telephoning or texting Tina Rogers at 484.256.4375. An early entry could very well gain exposure for the team and their sponsors.
For the second year in a row adult admission will be $28 while youngsters 6 through 11 pay just $5. Kids under six are admitted FREE. Pit fee is $35. The rain date is set for Saturday, April 13th.
A doubleheader show is scheduled for Grandview on Saturday, March 23rd, at 1 p.m. with Outlaw Enduros and Blast from the Past Vintage cars in action.
Then on Saturday, March 30th, 12 noon, fans will be admitted free to practice session that features all sorts of race cars testing their equipment for the new season. That will be a good time for fans to pick out their seat and purchase as $350 season ticket that includes all Saturday Rogers Family racing events between April and the end of September.
