Sammy Swindell Dominates Lake Ozark 360 Nationals Opener With Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series
Bryan Hulbert - ELDON, Mo. (September 1, 2018) Sammy Swindell is still winning; dominating by a half-track to open the Lake Ozark Speedway 360 Nationals presented by Impact Signs, Awnings, and Wraps with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by Sawblade.com on Saturday night.
Racing with Tyler Thomas on the start, the No. 3s gained the advantage off the second turn, but a miscue through the third and fourth turns saw Swindell shuffled to third as Tyler Thomas and Sam Hafertepe, Jr. made their way by.
"My car was really good in the Qualifier, and we were able to pull away quite a bit in just a couple laps. We made a couple changes for the Feature, and we were probably a little too tight to start. I ran the top and one and two and it was really good so I ran the top of three and four and it wasn't so that let Sam [Hafertepe] get by, but I could tell we had them covered and it was just a matter of time," commented Swindell on his seventh overall win of the season.
"I think these ASCS races, our average is like a second or third. That's hard to beat, and you know we've had some breaks on some of this stuff, but we've been getting our car working better all year too so we'll just work to stay ahead of everybody else."
Red after the completion of the first lap for Taylor Walton, the driver of the No. 0 was unharmed as the field resumed racing. Dashing around the No. 91t on the restart, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. took command with Swindell quickly following into second on the third lap.
Chasing the No. 15h as the back of the filed came into play, Hafertepe's night ended abruptly as the Hills Racing entry rolled to a stop atop the first turn with a fueling issue working Lap 7.
Reverting to Lap 6, Swindell took over as the lead and quickly ran away from the race for second. Leaving Tyler Thomas by a half straightaway, the driver of the No. 91t had his hands full in the closing laps as Derek Hagar and Kyle Bellm set sights on the Oklahoma shoe.
Taking over the runner-up spot on Lap 21, Derek Hagar made up very little ground on Swindell before the checkered flag flew. Following the No. 9jr, Kyle Bellm ended his night third with Tyler Thomas holding onto the final transfer into Saturday's $10,000 to win A-Feature. Rolling up from 10th, Washington's Seth Bergman completed the top-five. With the DNF by Hafertepe, the point's battle is back under a blanket with Bergman closing the gap to 24 points with Blake Hahn lurking in third with a 59-point gap to make up.
Earning the night's CP-Carrillo Hard Charger Award, Sean McClelland never vacated the low line in the D&E Supply No. 22s, advancing 14 positions to finish sixth. Randy Martin in seventh was followed by Wayne Johnson, Johnny Herrera, and Paul Nienhiser to round out the top-ten.
The Lake Ozark Speedway 360 Nationals presented by Impact Signs, Awning and Wraps will continue Sunday, September 2 with Hot Laps getting underway at 6:30 P.M. and includes the Lucas Oil POWRi National Midget League. TRUEX GRABS FIRST MODIFIED WIN, MONTANO TOPS FACTORY STOCK THRILLER AT WALL SATURDAY
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Tyler Truex of Mayetta won his first ever Pete and Elda's Bar/Carmen's Pizzeria Modified stock car 40-lap main event at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. The All American Auto Group Racing Series victory came in the 2017 Sportsman champion's rookie Modified season.
Truex jumped to the lead early and was forced to fight off some of the division's best drivers. Early on Steven Reed of Jackson and Holmdel's Andrew Krause were on Truex's rear bumper before Krause was forced to pit because of a faulty radiator cap. Truex then fought off Reed until just past halfway when defending champion and current point leader Jimmy Blewett of Howell slipped into second. Blewett then chased Truex the rest of the way but Truex seemed to have plenty of steam to the checker flag. Reed held on for third at the stripe with Shaun Carrig of Little Falls and Freehold's Chas Okerson wrapping up the top five.
“I'm speechless,” Truex said after the impressive win. “The hard work the people behind the scenes do for me is unbelievable! It seemed to take forever but we finally won a Modified race here! So happy to take my family back to victory lane in the Modified division here at Wall Stadium! The history, family tradition, fans and support I have is unbelievable. No words can explain how thankful I am to each and every one of you! Thank you!”
Current championship point leader Mike Montano won the 50-lap race for the O'Shea's Auto Repair Factory Stocks in what many called the most exciting race of the season. Montano jumped out to the lead early but then had to wrestle with Beachwood's Elliott Wohl for the top spot. Wohl chased Montano until lap 15 and then took over the lead with an outside lane pass.
Montano never gave up and stayed right with Wohl as the pair sliced through lapped traffic. A lap 45 restart put Montano in the outside lane next to Wohl and the duo then raced side-by-side for the final five laps with Montano edging Wohl at the finish line by inches. Ron Booth of Eatontown crossed the finish line third, but when his car failed post-race inspection because of a problem with his front suspension Scott Riggleman of Manchester was promoted to the spot. John Bowers of Pt. Pleasant and Howell's Steve west completed the top five.
Neil Rutt III of Toms River won his third straight 25-lapper for the Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks, racing through the pack to move out front near the halfway point. Jeffrey Loesch of Neptune City, Howell's Brian Osborn, Darianne McLaren of Edison and Hazlet's Chris Silvestri completed the top five.
Shanon Mongeau of Manchester continues to be undefeated as he raced to victory in the 25-lap race for the Mike's Performance Center Limited Late Models. Ken Matlach of New Hyde Park, N.Y. offered stiff competition before settling for second. Mike Tillett of Bayville, Carteret's Harry Schaeffer, and Dom Casola of Holmdel wrapped up the top five.
The Limited Late Models were scheduled for two main events on the night, but when a tire order failed to arrive at the speedway, which meant that there would not be enough tires for the entire field for both races, the second feature was scrubbed.
The All American Auto Group Racing Series continues this Saturday evening (Sept. 8) on “Ladies Night.” The Pete and Elda's Bar/Carmen's Pizzeria Modifieds will race in a 40-lapper and the Center State Engineering Sportsman cars, the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars, the Factory Stocks and the 4 Cylinder Stocks will all compete in a 25-lappers. A special Mechanic's Race will be contested and many of the lady drivers at the speedway will participate in an autograph and meet and great session. Ladies in the grandstand will enjoy a discounted $10 admission ticket. Grandstands open at 5:00 p.m., with qualifying set for 5:45 p.m. and feature race action set for 7:00 p.m.
Saturday night racing action continues through October 6 with schedule details at wallspeedwayracing.com. A Halloween themed racing event is set for October 20 and the annual Turkey Derby is set for Thanksgiving weekend.

Daryn Pittman Goes Flag-to-Flag at Skagit for 7th Win of 2018
ALGER, WA – September 1, 2018 – Daryn Pittman led all 40 laps to score his 7th World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season on the second night of the Outlaw Energy Showdown at Skagit Speedway. Donny Schatz and Brad Sweet exchanged the runner-up position multiple times in the closing stages with Schatz grabbing the position and Sweet settling for third.
Pittman won the Sears Craftsman Dash to earn the pole of the 40-lap Feature, alongside Schatz. Pittman controlled the initial start and led the opening lap as Schatz and Logan Schuchart jockeyed for the runner-up position before a Red Flag halted action. A handful of slowed cars littered the racing surface, resulting in Dominic Scelzi getting upside down. Scelzi was alert and talking to the safety crew but was transported to the local hospital with a hip injury.
Friday night’s winner Sheldon Haudenschild spun to a stop on Lap 3, ending his top-ten run and bunching the field back together. The next 10 laps allowed the leaders to delve into lapped traffic. With the preferred racing line up on the cushion, Pittman was able to methodically work his way through traffic efficiently with calculated slide jobs.
Buddy Kofoid’s good run came to an end on Lap 13, when he stopped in turn one. On the ensuing restart, Brad Sweet went to work on Schuchart, as the duo exchanged slide jobs for third. Schuchart resisted, but Sweet was able to wrestle the position away for good on Lap 15 and began to close in on Pittman and Schatz.
As lapped traffic picked up, Pittman was forced to slow his pace around the cushion, allowing Schatz and Sweet to knock on the door. The best racing action of the night came on Lap 27 through 30 as Pittman remained committed to the top, Schatz found some traction on the bottom and Sweet was looking for a way around both of them. The trio were within inches for the better part of those laps, exciting the large Skagit Speedway crowd.
Donny Schatz bobbled on the tricky cushion off of turn two on Lap 31, allowing Sweet to steal the runner-up position and, more importantly, allow Pittman to extend his advantage. Sweet began to close in on his Kasey Kahne Racing teammate, potentially setting up another nail-biting finish. Although, unlike last night, this time the battle was for second, as Schatz and Sweet waged war in lapped traffic, ultimately allowing Daryn Pittman to pull further away and pocket the $12,000 payday at Skagit Speedway for the second consecutive year.
“My guys did a good job. Glad to get the Adams family a win, Justin lost his Grandfather the other day and he’s been doing a great job for us this year, so this one was for him,” Pittman said sincerely in the Victory Lane. “It’s great to get another win, you cherish every one of this because you never know when your next one is going to come,” Pittman, who collected his 79th career Outlaw win, added humbly.
“I am so grateful to have my family here and that they can travel with me. I’m far from my home but there’s obviously a lot of Kasey Kahne fans here in Washington, so I’m glad to get this win for him,” Pittman said to a large cheer from the crowd.
When asked about his game plan starting on the front row, Pittman was honest. “My plan was if the 15 got under me, I better get my butt in gear,” the Owasso, OK native said with a smile.
Schatz got back by Sweet coming to the White Flag and held on for second. “It’s not where anyone wants to be, but you have to take it some days,” Schatz said of his runner-up finish. “40 laps is 40 laps, I felt like I needed it to be 100 laps to win tonight,” the Fargo, ND native added with a grin.
Brad Sweet came home third and talked about the three-car battle for the lead. “It was a good battle, I was trying to give it all I’ve got, I thought we had a really good car. It’s a little disappointing to give that spot back to Donny on the last lap, but still a good run for this team and to end the weekend on the podium is nothing to be ashamed of,” Sweet said in good spirits.
Logan Schuchart was strong all evening and finished fourth, with Ian Madsen completing the top-five in his second-ever weekend at Skagit Speedway.
Brent Marks earned a career-best Skagit finish in sixth with Shane Stewart finishing seventh. Washington’s own Trey Starks finished eighth. David Gravel earned KSE Hard Charger honors coming from 16th to ninth while Kraig Kinser completed the top ten.
The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series continues its West Coast swing and 40th Anniversary Season with a return to the Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, WA on Monday, September 3rd before the Series makes its lone appearance in Oregon on Wednesday, September 5th at Willamette Speedway. RAY SWINEHART WINS FOURTH PIONEER POLE BUILDINGS FORREST ROGERS MEMORIAL WORTH $10K; CRAIG WHITMOYER TOPS IN SPORTSMAN AND CHUCK SCHUTZ WINS LATE MODEL FEATURE AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY SATURDAY NIGHT
BECHTELSVILLE, PA September 2, 2018 . . . Ray Swinehart, now into his 44th consecutive season behind the wheel, added a cool $10,000 to his bank account, Saturday evening at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, PA, after winning the 48th annual Pioneer Pole Buildings Forrest Rogers Memorial 50-lapper. In addition, Swinehart was awarded a $150 product award by VP Racing Fuels and $250 from T.P. Trailers & Truck Equipment of Limerick, PA.
Swinehart, 66, of Perkiomenville, PA started sixth in the 31-car starting field aboard his self-owned Troyer chassied R&R Race Engines powered Modified Parts Depot backed No. 33 358 Modified machine, took the lead on Lap 5 and raced off with the popular triumph.
The win by Swinehart was his second feature win this season at the high-banked third-mile dirt oval promoted by the Rogers family, his first since back on July 28. Swinehart’s triumph was the 30th win of his career at Grandview and his fourth career Rogers Memorial victory. Swinehart won the event previously in 1988, 1996 and 2005.
“Up until about six months ago,” commented Swinehart, “I didn’t think we’d ever win another feature here again at this track. Tonight we made it back again.”
With the green, Briggs Danner, 16, of Allentown, PA immediately jumped out in front, with 358 Modified rookie racer Jordan Henn and Bobby Trapper Sr. in tow. Ten-time 358 Modified track champion Jeff Strunk quickly slowed in Turn 2 with a right rear flat to quickly bring out the caution on Lap 2.
When racing resumed it was Danner back out in front, with Henn and Swinehart now trailing. On Lap 3, Swinehart moved around Henn and took the runner-up position, with a red flag for a six-car tangle in Turn 3.
“We have been working on this car since the season started and it has been getting better and better,” mentioned Swinehart. “We are really happy with it, now.”
On Lap 4 it was Danner out in front again over Swinehart, Henn and longtime veteran Meme DeSantis, who started seventh. The next time around it was Swinehart out in front, followed by Danner, with another caution appearing, due to a six-car tangle.
On the restart, Brett “The Threat” Kressley and 44-year-old Ryan Godown got together on the front straightaway, with both cars spinning into the infield area. After Kressley and Godown got into a bumping and banging dust up, a decision was made by track officials to send both drivers to the pits for the rest of the event.
The new green showed Swinehart out in front over Danner, DeSantis and Henn for Lap 6. With 10 completed it was DeSantis advancing into second-place, with Danner now third, followed by Doug Manmiller and Jared Umbenhauer.
As the laps clicked off, Umbenhauer moved into fourth on Lap 16 and claimed third-place after 20-laps were put in the record books. Lap 22 another caution appeared after a five-car skirmish in Turn 1.
“My car was really ill-handling in the very beginning because we had a full load of fuel,” announced Swinehart. “I had to fight my way through that, early on, but the car was real good, tonight.”
Lap 23 it was still Swinehart out in front, followed by DeSantis and Umbenhauer. A lap later, Umbenhauer slipped by DeSantis, with Manmiller now up to fourth and Danner still running strong in fifth.
With 32 down, Manmiller went by DeSantis for third and with 36 complete, Swinehart caught up to some very heavy lapped traffic, as Umbenhauer began to reel him in.
Swinehart worked the slower lapped traffic perfectly, as Umbenhauer, 26, of Richland,PA made several attempts to get by Swinehart, however, Swinehart remained out in front.
I never realized that the middle to the bottom was full of rubber and I wasn’t down there in that right away,” noted Swinehart. “I changed my line and got things going pretty good after that.”
The top five was now Swinehart, Umbenhauer, Manmiller, DeSantis and John Willman with nine circuits remaining.
With two to go, ten-time 358 Modified track champion Craig Von Dohren, 55, of Oley, PA, who used a provisional to start from 30th in a back-up car, moved into fifth-place, getting by Willman. On the final trip around, Von Dohren got by DeSantis to claim fourth-place at the checkered.
Swinehart crossed the line as the happy race winner over Umbenhauer, who started 15th, Manmiller, who started 11th, Von Dohren and DeSantis, who earned his best finish of the season with a fifth-place run.
“At this point in my racing career,” revealed Swinehart. “This right here is about as good as it can get.”
Heat winners for 40 358 Modified cars on the night were DeSantis, Swinehart, Joe Fanelli and Henn. Consolations were won by Rick Laubach and Brian “BK Speed” Krummel.
In the 25-lap Sportsman main event, Steve Young, who started from the pole, was the early race leader over Derrick Smith and Andy Clemmer. Cautions after 3-laps and again after 4-laps bunched up the field, with Young still out in front over Smith and Clemmer.
On Lap 5, Young was still showing the way over Smith, with Craig Whitmoyer, 43, of Hamburg, PA suddenly blasting his way into third, as Mike Mammana and Dylan Swinehart trailed. On Lap 8, Whitmoyer motored by Smith to move into second-place and on Lap 10 Whitmoyer drove it underneath Young exiting Turn 4 to become the new race leader.
With 10-laps remaining, Whitmoyer was a full straightaway in front, with Young, Smith and Mammana trailing.
With the white flag waving, Mammana went by Smith to advance to third, as Mike Lisowski, who started 21st in the 25-car starting field, took fifth.
Crossing under the checkered it was Whitmoyer earning his first win this season, becoming the 11th different winner in the division this season. The triumph for Whitmoyer was the 10th of his career and his first at the track since July 8, 2017. Whitmoyer received in addition to first place money a $75 product award from VP Racing Fuels and $100 from T.P. Trailers.
Young held on to finish runner-up, followed by Mammana, Smith and Lisowski.
With 24 Sportsman cars on hand the heat race winners were Mammana, Young and Whitmoyer. No consolation race was needed.
“We made some changes to the car and we had a fast hot rod,” offered Whitmoyer. “We have been running the 604 down here all year and we made the right changes. We’ve been tweaking it all year and I’ve got a great crew. Those guys do all the work on this thing. I just show up and drive and all the credit goes to them. With this combination the car was just glued to the bottom tonight and we were a rocket.”
In the 25-lap Late Model feature event, outside front row starter Kyle Merkel jumped out in front with the green over Drew Weisser and current point leader Danny Snyder. Former division champion Lou Egrie moved into third on Lap 2, dropping Snyder to fourth.
The laps clicked off, with Merkel pulling out to a safe advantage as the race leader.
By Lap 11, 9-time division champion Chuck Schutz, of Pottstown, PA moved into fifth-place, after starting in ninth. Three circuits later, Schutz advanced into fourth-place and with five tours remaining, Merkel suddenly slowed down the back part of the speedway due to motor issues, bringing out the first caution of the race.
On the restart, Weisser was out in front, with Schutz powering into second-place. With 22 complete, Schutz climbed to the top, becoming the new race leader. Cautions after 23-laps and again after 24-laps bunched up the field.
Schutz easily won his second consecutive main event and his third of the season, increasing his career win total to 51 overall. Schutz in addition took home a $100 VP Racing Fuels product award and $100 from T.P. Trailers.
Weisser finished a solid second in front of Snyder, Wayne Pfeil and Steve Wilson at the checkered.
“I had to wait until the track dried out so it would free my car up there and tonight it worked out pretty good,” said Schutz. “The car was vibrating again at the end, but I’m not sure why that is. I was working the bottom and glad that the caution came out. It evened up the playing field there a little.”
Exciting racing action returns to Grandview Speedway on Saturday, September 8th, with the running of WNPV1440 Radio Champion’s Night. The T.P.Trailers NASCAR 358 Modifieds, Sportsman and Late Models will all be battling to decide who will win the lucrative NASCAR/track chsmpionships. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m.
Fans are reminded that advance tickets for the 48th Annual Freedom 76 set for Saturday, September 15 will be on sale. The race pays $25,000 to win and is expected to attract many of the top talents in the sport. Advance tickets are priced at $35 while tickets purchased on race day will be $40.
In addition the Freedom 38 takes place on Friday night, 7 p.m. featuring the Sportsman, MASS Sprints and practice sessions for the Modifieds planning to race the next night.

KUHL AND GROSSO COLLECT MODIFIED FEATURE VICTORIES AT NEW EGYPT SPEEDWAY
New Egypt, NJ (September 2, 2018) - At New Egypt Speedway's Twins Night
presented by Flemington Car & Truck Country Family of Dealerships, Bryan
Kuhl and Brandon Grosso each won a Modified feature. In the Mid-Atlantic
Sprint Series, Mark Bitner picked up the win in the scheduled feature while
Ryan Stillwaggon was victorious in the postponed main event originally
scheduled for April 14. The Crate Modified feature went to John Criscione
while Jermain Godshall took top honors in the main event for the Larry's Hot
Rods & Harley's Northeast Wingless Sprint Cars.
After several attempts, the first of two 20-lap features for the Modifieds
got underway with Rocco Infante on top. On the third revolution, Bryan Kuhl
slipped by John Pakenham to move into second. By lap five, Kuhl was
challenging Infante for the lead. At the halfway point with Infante still
in charge, the caution flag waved for a tangle between Rich Rutski and PJ
Oliver. On the ensuing restart, Kuhl bolted past Infante and ascended to the
front of the pack with Infante and Chad Barney next in line. With six laps
left, Barney drove by Infante for second as Kuhl was stretching out his
advantage. Although the margin between Kuhl and Barney would close in the
final laps, Kuhl went unchallenged to register his first career Modified
win. Barney's strong run netted him second. With Infante finishing third,
Pakenham came home in fourth. Brian Papiez was fifth after starting the race
in twelfth.
With the top eleven finishers inverted for the second 20-lap Modified
feature, polesitter Brandon Grosso grabbed the lead with Matt Stangle and
Kevin Vaclavicek in tow. Following a trio of cautions, Grosso was still on
top with seven circuits completed and Vaclavicek was in second. Stangle
regained the runner-up position on lap eight just before the yellow lights
illuminated for Rich Rutski. At the halfway point, Grosso was still pacing
the field with Stangle in second, Davey Sammons in third and David VanHorn
in fourth. On the eleventh revolution, the yellow flag waved for the final
time for an incident between JR Fulper and Ryan Krachun. When racing
resumed, the top two of Grosso and Stangle remained intact and VanHorn
advanced into third as a mechanical issue forced a slowing Sammons to drop
out of the race. With five to go, Grosso was cruising along as VanHorn was
reeling in Stangle. Grosso would lead every lap of the contest to score his
second win of the year. VanHorn got by Stangle with two circuits left to
finish in second. With Stangle taking third, Vaclavicek was fourth and Chad
Barney was fifth. The Modified heats were won by Brandon Grosso, Chad Barney
and Davey Sammons. JR Fulper won the consolation race.
Polesitter Mark Bitner led from start to finish to win the 20-lap main event
for the Mid-Atlantic Sprint Cars. The victory was the first of the year for
Bitner in the series and his eighth career checkered flag at New Egypt
Speedway. The runner-up spot was claimed by Andy Best. Austin Bishop
completed the race in third. Eddie Wagner came from his eighth starting
position to finish in fourth. Fifth was taken by Jason Dunn. Jeff Geiges and
Austin Bishop were victors in the qualifying races for the Mid-Atlantic
Sprint Cars.
In the 20-lap feature for the Mid-Atlantic Sprint Cars from April 14, Ryan
Stillwaggon overtook Jeff Geiges with two circuits remaining and pulled away
to capture his first career New Egypt Speedway checkered flag. The victory
was the second of the year for Stillwaggon in the series. Geiges, who led
the opening eighteen tours, finished second. Third went to Mark Bitner.
Austin Bishop was fourth and Eddie Wagner came home in fifth.
After taking the lead from Aaron Weaver on lap five, John Criscione motored
away from his rivals to claim the top prize in the 20-lap Crate Modified
feature. This was Criscione's third career victory. Weaver held on for
second with Joe Toth taking third. Twelfth place starting Connor King was
fourth. Eric Palmer completed the top five. John Criscione and Eric Palmer
took the Crate Modified heat contests.
In the 20-lap main event for the Larry's Hot Rods & Harley's Northeast
Wingless Sprint Cars, Jermain Godshall powered out of the final corner of
the last lap to edge out Duane Nixon for his second victory of the year.
With Nixon taking second after leading nineteen tours of the race, Brian
Spencer was third. Joey Biasi, the heat race winner, wound up in fourth and
Heidi Hedin was fifth.
On Saturday, September 8 at New Egypt Speedway, the 2018 track champion in
the Modified division will be decided on Modified Championship and First
Responders Night. All First Responders will receive free grandstand
admission with proper identification. Along with the Modifieds, the Hammer
Sportsman, Street Stocks and 4-Cylinders will be in competition. The pit
area opens at 3:00 p.m. with the grandstand gates unlocking at 4:00 p.m. Hot
laps get cranked up at 5:00 p.m. and the racing action begins at 6:00 p.m.
Admission to the grandstand is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and older,
$10 for teens 12-15, $10 for military personal and their spouses with ID,
and Kids 11 & under are free. Pit admission is $30 with a New Egypt Speedway
license and $40 with no license.

McDOUGAL WINS FIRST WITH LATE RACE PASS OF ROOMIE AT I-55

Pevely, Missouri......September 1, 2018 - Back at the end of May, Jason McDougal moved from his Broken Arrow, Oklahoma home to the state of Indiana to further his racing career.
Sight unseen, at the invitation of fellow racer Kevin Thomas, Jr., McDougal became roommates with Thomas and his wife Whitney at their home.
Fast forward to Saturday night and the final restart with five laps remaining in the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car debut at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55. McDougal put his Daigh-Phillips Motorsports/DRC/Foxco Chevy up on the rail and outdueled Thomas on the final restart with five laps remaining to pick up his first career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature victory.
It's been quite a run for McDougal who has quickly made a name for himself in the USAC ranks over the past handful of months, an opportunity he said wouldn't have been possible had it not been for the driver he defeated on night two of the Brandt "River Town Showdown."
"It was actually his idea for me to be here," McDougal explained. "He gave me this opportunity, honestly, to be doing this right now. Without him, I wouldn't be here. I know he's down on himself right now for losing, but I know, deep down, he's proud."
Initially, it was McDougal who held the point on the opening lap by mere inches as he tussled to and fro with Chase Stockon for the first three laps, with Stockon emerging at the forefront as an incident in turn three shook up the look at the front when Thomas and Robert Ballou made contact battling for the third position in turn three.
Thomas took a hop, skip and a jump before landing on all fours and motoring on. Meanwhile, Ballou took the worst of it, sliding sideways to a stop in the middle of turn three. He restarted from the tail and made a miraculous charge back through the field to a third-place finish by race's end.
By lap 12, the leaders had hit L.A. rush hour construction zone traffic with cars spread from the inside wall to the outside concrete, leaving not much room for the frontrunners to maneuver. It would take precise precision, which Thomas used to thread the eye of the needle between Stockon and the lapped car of Chuck Walker in turn three on lap 13 to grab the lead. Stockon went down swinging, racing back to the bottom, wheel-to-wheel with Thomas until Thomas secured the position.
In the scramble, you could throw an electric blanket over the top seven, which ultimately was tail-ended by McDougal where he had dropped to and would remain throughout the midway point. McDougal steadily worked his way back toward the front, to fourth by lap 18 and to third by the 19th lap behind Thomas and now Courtney, the previous night's winner in Granite City, Ill., who threw multiple figurative punches at Thomas with a slider in turn one on the 21st lap to take the lead before Thomas returned the favor in turn four to reclaim the spot later that same lap.
On the 25th lap, one of the most frightening incidents of the season occurred as Walker climbed the front straightaway wall and got into the catch fencing in turn one, tearing down several posts and links as he helicoptered across the track upside down with pieces and parts of his yellow racecar strewn about the property.
Walker climbed out of the wreckage and walked away under his own power with a severely damaged machine. The ensuing carnage resulted in a nearly one-hour red flag period, forcing drivers to sit, wait, and ponder what they would do on this final restart.
McDougal and the team decided not to make a single mechanical change during the open red, but there was a benefit to it all for McDougal that wasn't associated with bringing out any tools or tool accessories.

"Honestly, having that long red kind of helped," McDougal said. "I was getting a little tired on that long green run. I knew I had to concentrate, hit my marks and not worry about what everyone else was going to do. We had it rolling pretty good early and we were trying the top. After the first couple of laps, it seemed like it went right around the bottom and I fell back, then the top picked back up. We were pretty consistent all night around the top."
And so, the stage had been set with the established Thomas leading the young, upstart McDougal for the final restart.
While Thomas stayed tried and true to the bottom of the track, McDougal simply threw caution to the wind and ripped the top with relentless abandon, surging past Thomas with four laps to go. Thomas hung on tightly and tried not to let go of his fading grip of the lead, but McDougal had his ride and the topside of the racetrack working in unison, like a bullet train on a monorail.
McDougal was flawless with the laps dwindling and wouldn't be denied on this particular night, bringing home his first checkered flag with USAC. McDougal became the second driver in the last three races to pick up his first career series victory, joining fellow Okie Tyler Thomas, who won just eight days earlier at Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway.
New series point leader, by one, Thomas, finished second ahead of Ballou, Courtney and Justin Grant.
It was only McDougal's fourth USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car race in the No. 71p for Steve and Carla Phillips, owners of 17 series wins with Darland between 2013 and 2015.

Hamlin Speedway Promoters Randy and Denise Smith welcomed in their regular seven divisions on Saturday evening to usher in Labor Day weekend at their speedway. The rainy, hot, humid weather that has been a benchmark of the summer of 2018 alleviated over the holiday weekend and great, comfortable, time to go racing weather greeted the standing room only crowd and the 100 plus racers that entered the racing action in the Pocono Mountains. On tap was the special event for the Hampton RV & Trailer Sales Stage One Modifieds with the running of the annual Mom & Pop Smith Memorial race. Playing catch-up with a couple of races that were postponed on July 21st, Hamlin ran like clockwork with an over the top show that climaxed with the running of an unbelievable ten feature event program duplicating the ten show night from the previous week. The high flying racing action was sponsored by the good folks at S&S Speedways Indoor Go Karts located in Stroudsburg, PA. (www.ssspeedways.com) Happy winners found their way to the RLE Towing and Recovery Winners Circle at the end of the evening for all of the pomp and circumstance. The ten feature show was completed at 10:32 PM.
The Saturday night action found "The Nickel Man" Joel Smith rocking the house with a wire to wire run in the thirty lap Hampton RV & Trailer Sales Stage One Modified Mom & Pop Smith Memorial event. Jared Silfee used some last lap heroics to capture his second win of the in All Star Slingshot feature headliner. "The Oxford Express" Dale Kober captured the regular Super Slinger feature run. "The Taylor Tornado" Zack Weisenfluh captured his second win of the season in the JPA Masonry Rookie Wingless 600 Sprint finale. "Bad" Chad Sandt took advantage of an incident in front of him as he inherited the lead and then drove away from the field to claim his second consecutive win and his fourth of the season in the Chad Wheeler Excavating Wingless 600 Sprint headliner. "Lil Miss" Shelby McLaughlin turned up the wick in her hot rod as she sped to her fifth win of the season in the Junior Slingshot feature. Alex Reinsmith rolled a double as he captured the regular 270 Sprint feature and also won the held-over event from July 21st. In the Super Slinger make-up feature from July 21st, Alan Kober was all business as he led all of the way to claim his first win of the season. Three Restricted 600 Sprints came to the speedway and the feature found Dylan Kontra fast and then faster as he captured with win with room to spare.
In the Mom & Pop Smith Memorial event for the Hampton RV & Trailer Sales Stage One Modified run with lap money on the line, Joel Smith rocketed out front at the drop of the green flag and throughout the thirty laps of hard fought racing, Smith claimed his fifth win of the season as he was able to blister the clay with consistent 12.8 second laps. John Comandini was able to keep pace as he was knocking off some impressive 12.9 second laps in his own right. Smith won with Comandini second, Tanner VanDoren third, Amanda Buchel fourth in the Cole Polishing hot rod and Joe Price rallying to claim fifth place. Jasper Ziegafuse, Quarter Midget star Mark Evans, Cody Motto and Evan Civick completed the field. Amanda Buchel claimed the Hard Charger Award for the event as she advanced five positions during the run.
In the All Star Slingshot feature, Paul Ennes grabbed the lead at the start of the twenty lap main and led for the first three laps before Adam Buchel in another Cole Polishing Sponsored hot rod was able to drive by him on a restart. Buchel was being pressured by Ennes, Wes Hearn and Scott Neary. The action was close and the quarters were tight as the laps clicked off. Jared Silfee began from eighth place and was making waves as he advanced through the field. Buchel held his ground and fought off the very tough competition time and time again. A late restart found Jared Silfee in the runner-up role and he began to make his assault for the lead. He pulled even with Buchel and the duo touched and Silfee slipped past Buchel for the lead and the win, his second of the season. Buchel was a disappointed runner-up with Hearn , Ennes and Neary completing the top five. Heading up the second five was the returning Taylor Mills with Ashley Kober, Tanner Jones, Austin Silfee and Dale Kober completing the top ten.
The 270 Sprint feature found Alex Reinsmith taking off with the lead at the start and he would quickly distance himself from the field with some 11.985 second lap times and handily capturing the win. Glenn Macomber would finish in second place with the returning Don Schmidt third and Anthony Chrobak fourth. Schmidt and Chrobak raced together for twenty laps dueling for third place with Schmidt prevailing.
The Super Slingshot feature event found Dale Kober spot on as he led the entire distance with some fast 13.6 second times as he claimed his third win of the season. Paul Ennes, who has returned to racing after a couple of years hiatus, was second in a great run as he returns to championship form on the race track. Wes Hearn was third with Jim Conroy, Greg Zellman, Wally Bell and David Guest following
Shelby McLaughlin raced into the lead from her front row start and would easily distance herself from the field with some quick 14.8 second laps times. A couple of skirmishes brought the field together and on the restart McLaughlin would lead but Kasey Hufcut had moved into second place. The duo would leave the field in their wake as it clearly became a two car chase for the win. Hufcut would slow with two laps remaining and drop from the field. McLaughlin would win her fifth main event of the season and solidify her hold in the point lead. JJ Rice would settle for second with Austin Homan doing great work for third place, Aiden Donaldson in fourth and Brian Smith claiming fifth place.. The second five found James Benz heading up the action with RJ Sherman, Charlene Benz, James Hendricks and James Costlow completing the top ten.
The JPA Masonry Rookie Wingless 600 Sprint encounter found Zack Weisenfluh hammer down at the start with four time winner "Nitro" Noah Zielinski applying the pressure. Newcomer Kenny Harris, Scott Slater and Richie Maguire had their own battle going for third place. As the laps clicked off, the drivers were evenly matched and Zielinski tried every channel of the raceway he knew to slip past Weisenfluh. It was not to be as Weisenfluh sped to his second win of the season with Zielinski in the runner-up role. Harris, Slater and Maguire would complete the top five. Heading up the second five were Ryan Stangle, Ryan Lacoe, Dennis Stawinsky, Dennis Chamberlain and Cody Powell.
Joel Smith took the lead at the start of the Chad Wheeler Excavating 600 Sprint event with Zack Weisenfluh, Duane White and Colin White chasing him. Smith was strong and hung tough while Colin White made his way into second place. Smith and White were now in a classic duel with Smith controlling the baseline of the speedway. A couple of restarts found White trying sliders but Smith fought off each advance. On lap thirteen, as they approached the the third turn, White got to the inside of Smith and tried another slider but Smith was aside of him and the pair made contact and Smith spun. White and Smith would be sent to the back of the field but while Smith complied, White did not and eventually pulled off of the raceway. When the racing resumed Chad Sandt took over the point when he drove to the top of the raceway in turn one and powered his Ron Sandt Motorsports entry to a few car length lead with former two time track champion Eddie Strada in pursuit. Sandt would work his magic and go on to capture his fourth win of the season. Strada would receive runner-up honors in his return to the speedway while Duane White, Joe Nemeth and Mick D'Agostino would follow in the top five. Heading up the second five were Joseph Smith, Zack Weisenfluh, the returning Amber Oraschin, Cody Smith and Tyler Lindsay.
In the held-over Super Slinger event, Alan Kober took advantage of a front row start and would lead all of the way to earn his first feature win of the season in the division. Greg Zellman would finish second with Dale Kober, Paul Ennes, Jim Conroy and David Guest following.
The held-over 270 Sprint event found Alex Reinsmith taking command at the start and leading all twenty laps on his way to victory. Glenn Macomber would finish second with Don Schmidt in third. Kyle Ferrucci would run into mechanical woes late in the event and scratched for the remainder of the evening.
In our first glimpse of the new restricted 600 Sprint division, three car made their way to the speedway. Dylan Kontra ran some very fast times around the speedway to the tune of 11.799 second laps to claim the win with Tyler Henry claiming second and Tanner VanDoren third. The cars had wings affixed for the shake down.
PEARL JAMS:
The hotly contested evening of racing entertainment was precise in every step of the way and even with a couple of breaks for track maintenance the staff kept moving the program along swiftly and the seven division, ten feature show was completed at 10:32 PM. Kudos to Randy Smith for an excellent track surface that found the drivers utilizing many racing channels throughout the evening of competition.
The JPA Masonry Rookie Wingless 600 Sprint heats were captured by Scott Slater and Noah Zielinski. The Wingless 600 Sprints ran off three heats with Colin White, Zack Weisenfluh and Joel Smith capturing wins. the first set and Mike Thompson and Chad Sandt prevailing in round two. Junior Slingshot heats were claimed by Austin Homan and Aiden Donaldson. All Star Slingshot heats went to Paul Ennes and Adam Buchel. Tanner VanDoren won the restricted 600 Sprint heat. Two rounds of heats were run off for the Stage One Modifieds with Joel Smith and John Comandini winning the first round and Jasper Ziegafuse and John Comandini winning the second round.
Time trials found the Super Slingers and 270 Sprints taking time trials. In the Super Slingers Paul Ennes was the top gun with a 14.368 second clocking. In the 270 Sprints, Glenn Macomber had top time with a 12.2 second lap time.
New faces emerged on Saturday night as Mark Evans was back in the saddle of the second Motto entry. Canadian Bryan Preville, and Nolan Palaima in Roger Collins machine were new arrivals for the Junior Slingshots. Taylor and Justin Mills, Ron Thoman and John Kendall were back in All Star Slingshot competition and Mikey Johannes took his first ride in the All Star feature. Kenny Harris, Savannah and Carmen Leggio Jr, Jason Mudowney Ken Karpovich, Amber and Chris Oraschin, Ryan Neil and Eddie Strada were back in the 600 Sprinters.
Rookie 600 Sprinter Brandon Nicholas flipped in his heat event as he climbed the backstretch fence and ended up back on his wheels. Brandon complained of soreness in his shoulder and arm afterwards. Jason Muldowney flipped in the same incident but fired up the hot rod and continued on.

The next event on the Hamlin Speedway schedule is set for September 8th headline the action with the running of the All Star National 50 for the Slingshot division with $1,000.00 on the line with a 24 entry field. The Junior National event for the Junior Slingshots will also be hosted. All regular seven divisions will be on the race card.

Hamlin, PA -Hamlin Speedway Goes Ten Again Features With Outstanding Labor Day show

Hamlin Speedway Promoters Randy and Denise Smith welcomed in their regular seven divisions on Saturday evening to usher in Labor Day weekend at their speedway. The rainy, hot, humid weather that has been a benchmark of the summer of 2018 alleviated over the holiday weekend and great, comfortable, time to go racing weather greeted the standing room only crowd and the 100 plus racers that entered the racing action in the Pocono Mountains. On tap was the special event for the Hampton RV & Trailer Sales Stage One Modifieds with the running of the annual Mom & Pop Smith Memorial race. Playing catch-up with a couple of races that were postponed on July 21st, Hamlin ran like clockwork with an over the top show that climaxed with the running of an unbelievable ten feature event program duplicating the ten show night from the previous week. The high flying racing action was sponsored by the good folks at S&S Speedways Indoor Go Karts located in Stroudsburg, PA. (www.ssspeedways.com) Happy winners found their way to the RLE Towing and Recovery Winners Circle at the end of the evening for all of the pomp and circumstance. The ten feature show was completed at 10:32 PM.
The Saturday night action found "The Nickel Man" Joel Smith rocking the house with a wire to wire run in the thirty lap Hampton RV & Trailer Sales Stage One Modified Mom & Pop Smith Memorial event. Jared Silfee used some last lap heroics to capture his second win of the in All Star Slingshot feature headliner. "The Oxford Express" Dale Kober captured the regular Super Slinger feature run. "The Taylor Tornado" Zack Weisenfluh captured his second win of the season in the JPA Masonry Rookie Wingless 600 Sprint finale. "Bad" Chad Sandt took advantage of an incident in front of him as he inherited the lead and then drove away from the field to claim his second consecutive win and his fourth of the season in the Chad Wheeler Excavating Wingless 600 Sprint headliner. "Lil Miss" Shelby McLaughlin turned up the wick in her hot rod as she sped to her fifth win of the season in the Junior Slingshot feature. Alex Reinsmith rolled a double as he captured the regular 270 Sprint feature and also won the held-over event from July 21st. In the Super Slinger make-up feature from July 21st, Alan Kober was all business as he led all of the way to claim his first win of the season. Three Restricted 600 Sprints came to the speedway and the feature found Dylan Kontra fast and then faster as he captured with win with room to spare.
In the Mom & Pop Smith Memorial event for the Hampton RV & Trailer Sales Stage One Modified run with lap money on the line, Joel Smith rocketed out front at the drop of the green flag and throughout the thirty laps of hard fought racing, Smith claimed his fifth win of the season as he was able to blister the clay with consistent 12.8 second laps. John Comandini was able to keep pace as he was knocking off some impressive 12.9 second laps in his own right. Smith won with Comandini second, Tanner VanDoren third, Amanda Buchel fourth in the Cole Polishing hot rod and Joe Price rallying to claim fifth place. Jasper Ziegafuse, Quarter Midget star Mark Evans, Cody Motto and Evan Civick completed the field. Amanda Buchel claimed the Hard Charger Award for the event as she advanced five positions during the run.
In the All Star Slingshot feature, Paul Ennes grabbed the lead at the start of the twenty lap main and led for the first three laps before Adam Buchel in another Cole Polishing Sponsored hot rod was able to drive by him on a restart. Buchel was being pressured by Ennes, Wes Hearn and Scott Neary. The action was close and the quarters were tight as the laps clicked off. Jared Silfee began from eighth place and was making waves as he advanced through the field. Buchel held his ground and fought off the very tough competition time and time again. A late restart found Jared Silfee in the runner-up role and he began to make his assault for the lead. He pulled even with Buchel and the duo touched and Silfee slipped past Buchel for the lead and the win, his second of the season. Buchel was a disappointed runner-up with Hearn , Ennes and Neary completing the top five. Heading up the second five was the returning Taylor Mills with Ashley Kober, Tanner Jones, Austin Silfee and Dale Kober completing the top ten.
The 270 Sprint feature found Alex Reinsmith taking off with the lead at the start and he would quickly distance himself from the field with some 11.985 second lap times and handily capturing the win. Glenn Macomber would finish in second place with the returning Don Schmidt third and Anthony Chrobak fourth. Schmidt and Chrobak raced together for twenty laps dueling for third place with Schmidt prevailing.
The Super Slingshot feature event found Dale Kober spot on as he led the entire distance with some fast 13.6 second times as he claimed his third win of the season. Paul Ennes, who has returned to racing after a couple of years hiatus, was second in a great run as he returns to championship form on the race track. Wes Hearn was third with Jim Conroy, Greg Zellman, Wally Bell and David Guest following
Shelby McLaughlin raced into the lead from her front row start and would easily distance herself from the field with some quick 14.8 second laps times. A couple of skirmishes brought the field together and on the restart McLaughlin would lead but Kasey Hufcut had moved into second place. The duo would leave the field in their wake as it clearly became a two car chase for the win. Hufcut would slow with two laps remaining and drop from the field. McLaughlin would win her fifth main event of the season and solidify her hold in the point lead. JJ Rice would settle for second with Austin Homan doing great work for third place, Aiden Donaldson in fourth and Brian Smith claiming fifth place.. The second five found James Benz heading up the action with RJ Sherman, Charlene Benz, James Hendricks and James Costlow completing the top ten.
The JPA Masonry Rookie Wingless 600 Sprint encounter found Zack Weisenfluh hammer down at the start with four time winner "Nitro" Noah Zielinski applying the pressure. Newcomer Kenny Harris, Scott Slater and Richie Maguire had their own battle going for third place. As the laps clicked off, the drivers were evenly matched and Zielinski tried every channel of the raceway he knew to slip past Weisenfluh. It was not to be as Weisenfluh sped to his second win of the season with Zielinski in the runner-up role. Harris, Slater and Maguire would complete the top five. Heading up the second five were Ryan Stangle, Ryan Lacoe, Dennis Stawinsky, Dennis Chamberlain and Cody Powell.
Joel Smith took the lead at the start of the Chad Wheeler Excavating 600 Sprint event with Zack Weisenfluh, Duane White and Colin White chasing him. Smith was strong and hung tough while Colin White made his way into second place. Smith and White were now in a classic duel with Smith controlling the baseline of the speedway. A couple of restarts found White trying sliders but Smith fought off each advance. On lap thirteen, as they approached the the third turn, White got to the inside of Smith and tried another slider but Smith was aside of him and the pair made contact and Smith spun. White and Smith would be sent to the back of the field but while Smith complied, White did not and eventually pulled off of the raceway. When the racing resumed Chad Sandt took over the point when he drove to the top of the raceway in turn one and powered his Ron Sandt Motorsports entry to a few car length lead with former two time track champion Eddie Strada in pursuit. Sandt would work his magic and go on to capture his fourth win of the season. Strada would receive runner-up honors in his return to the speedway while Duane White, Joe Nemeth and Mick D'Agostino would follow in the top five. Heading up the second five were Joseph Smith, Zack Weisenfluh, the returning Amber Oraschin, Cody Smith and Tyler Lindsay.
In the held-over Super Slinger event, Alan Kober took advantage of a front row start and would lead all of the way to earn his first feature win of the season in the division. Greg Zellman would finish second with Dale Kober, Paul Ennes, Jim Conroy and David Guest following.
The held-over 270 Sprint event found Alex Reinsmith taking command at the start and leading all twenty laps on his way to victory. Glenn Macomber would finish second with Don Schmidt in third. Kyle Ferrucci would run into mechanical woes late in the event and scratched for the remainder of the evening.
In our first glimpse of the new restricted 600 Sprint division, three car made their way to the speedway. Dylan Kontra ran some very fast times around the speedway to the tune of 11.799 second laps to claim the win with Tyler Henry claiming second and Tanner VanDoren third. The cars had wings affixed for the shake down.
PEARL JAMS:
The hotly contested evening of racing entertainment was precise in every step of the way and even with a couple of breaks for track maintenance the staff kept moving the program along swiftly and the seven division, ten feature show was completed at 10:32 PM. Kudos to Randy Smith for an excellent track surface that found the drivers utilizing many racing channels throughout the evening of competition.
The JPA Masonry Rookie Wingless 600 Sprint heats were captured by Scott Slater and Noah Zielinski. The Wingless 600 Sprints ran off three heats with Colin White, Zack Weisenfluh and Joel Smith capturing wins. the first set and Mike Thompson and Chad Sandt prevailing in round two. Junior Slingshot heats were claimed by Austin Homan and Aiden Donaldson. All Star Slingshot heats went to Paul Ennes and Adam Buchel. Tanner VanDoren won the restricted 600 Sprint heat. Two rounds of heats were run off for the Stage One Modifieds with Joel Smith and John Comandini winning the first round and Jasper Ziegafuse and John Comandini winning the second round.
Time trial found the Super Slingers nad 270 Sprints taking time trials. In the Super Slingers Paul Ennes was the top gun with a 14.368 second clocking. In the 270 Sprints, Kyle Ferrucci captured the 270 Sprint heat. Wally Bell won the Super Slingers heat event. Stage One Modified heats went to Joel Smith and Jeff Hineline
Time Trials were the order for the All Star Slingshots and the Junior Slingshot divisions. Danny Buccafusca was the top time in the All Stars with a 14.098 second time over Scott Neary's 14.199 time. In the Junior division, Kasey Hufcut was the top timer with a 14.866 time, just nipping JJ Rice who timed at 14.891 seconds.
New faces emerged on Saturday night as Richie VanOrden made his return to Hamlin, where he enjoyed much success in the past. Brett Romer was a new entry as well. Anthony Chrobak was back in the saddle of the second Motto entry. Jan Gensits was on board in the Super Slingers. Brock Pinkerous and Jakoby Thompson were new arrivals for the Junior Slingshots while Evan VanValkneburg returned to action. Mike Thompson, Scott Slater Jr, Jake Eby and Bob Hummer were new Rookie 600 entries. Bobby Butler returned to the speedway while Zach Weidner and Don Colaluce made their first appearances in some time.
Even though the season is in the latter stages of the 2018 racing season, there is still plenty of hot racing action coming to close out the season. The Mom and Pop Smith Memorial for the Hampton RV and Trailer Sales Stage One Modifieds will head up the Labor Day Show on August 31st as the speedway pays tribute to two of the pioneers of racing in the Northeast.
