AUTO RACING AND 70TH ANNIVERSARY BASH SET FOR WALL STADIUM SATURDAY (8-1)
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Wall Stadium Speedway auto racing fans will not only have the opportunity to witness six feature races on Saturday (8-1) evening, but will also be able to enjoy a celebration of the “70th Anniversary Season” at the famous third mile paved oval speedway! Area and auto racing dignitaries are expected to be on hand for the occasion and celebration.
On Saturday the pit area will open at 12:30 p.m. with a paid practice from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. Regular practice will then run from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Grandstand seating will open at 4:30 p.m. with a limited number of tickets available. All tickets will be sold at the gate on a first come, first served basis. Qualifying will then start at 5:30 p.m. before the anniversary celebration and then six main events begin at 7:00 p.m.
Top Modified racers including opening night winner Derek Hopkinson of Toms River, Steven Reed of Jackson, Ricky Collins of Willow Grove, Pa., Andrew Krause of Holmdel, Kenny Van Wickle of Manasquan and Brick's Dom Fattaruso, among others, are expected to see action.
Opening night winners, Eric Lane of Howell (Sportsman), Chris Silvestri of Hazlet (Limited Late Models), Rich Maher of Neptune City (4 Cylinder Stock), Bryan O'Shea of Neptune City (Factory Stock) and Daniel Carter of Cortland, N.Y. (Legend Car) are all expected to participate in the evening's racing events.
The Modifieds are set for a 40-lap main event and the Sportsman cars, Limited Late Models, Factory Stocks, Legend Cars and 4 Cylinder Stocks are all scheduled for 25-lap feature races on the third mile high banked paved oval.

30 FOR 30: LEARY LEADS ALL AT THE BURG FOR 2ND STRAIGHT ISW WIN

Lawrenceburg, Indiana (July 26, 2020).........Entering 2020 NOS Energy Drink Indiana Sprint Week, it had been three years since a driver had gone "back-to-back" with consecutive victories in the annual tour of the Hoosier state.
The very same driver who achieved the aforementioned feat in 2017, C.J. Leary, has now become the most recent individual to accomplish the feat by leading all 30 laps of Sunday night's third round of ISW at Lawrenceburg Speedway.
With Leary's victory in the Leary Racing/Valvoline - Gray Auto - Leary Construction/DRC/1-Way Chevy, the Greenfield Ind. reigning series champion has already equaled his total USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car win output from a year ago in a mere two-night span, a year which also gained him his first Indiana Sprint Week championship.
"Man, that was a workout," Leary exclaimed after surpassing Thomas Meseraull and Tony Stewart in terms of USAC National Sprint Car wins with his 11th career triumph. "Lawrenceburg Speedway was elbows up tonight; definitely had the spurs on and took all I had. Typically, it's a breeze in the park for me since I have so many laps here, but tonight, it was everything I had, and using all the experience I've put together the past 10 years here."
That experience includes a sprint car track championship at the track during the 2013 season, plus the 2017 ISW score that launched him into a succession of ISW feature victories on two-straight nights that summer. Coming into Sunday, he'd been the only driver to have finished inside the top-five of the Lawrenceburg ISW event in each of the last four years, a streak he's now run to five.
For Leary, track position was key on this night, as is the case for most anybody in as tight and competitive of a field that is in on display each night throughout the ISW tour. A solid qualifying performance Sunday night and a transfer spot through the heat netted Leary a starting spot on the outside of the front row.
"We somehow sandbagged just enough two nights in a row to get on the front row," Leary said facetiously. "It's what I felt like we needed to do to win these races. Winning these races is tough, but the 30 car was on a rail tonight."
Leary proved that fact from the word go as he snagged the advantage topside to defeat pole sitter Seavey at the exit of turn two to lead the opening lap in a duel of the winners of the first two rounds of ISW this weekend.
At the completion of lap one, trouble ensued near the start/finish line when contact between 10th starting Kevin Thomas Jr. and 12th starting Tyler Courtney resulted in terminal frontend damage for Courtney, the 2018 Lawrenceburg ISW winner. Thomas, meanwhile, coasted to a stop atop the banking in turn one. He'd return to the fray and finish 12th.
More trouble ensued on the fourth lap when Jadon Rogers took a tumble in turn two to bring out the yellow flag in an incident which also collected USAC Triple Crown champion Jerry Coons Jr. Rogers was okay, while Coons rejoined the lineup for the restart, finishing 17th.
On the lap eight restart following the stoppage of Max Adams in turn one, the man on a mission was fourth-running Justin Grant who expunged Bacon for third with a turn three slider, then tried to execute the slide on Seavey for second on the 10th circuit in turn one.
As Grant was side-by-side with Seavey entering the first turn, Grant performed a quick skip and a hop up the banking, losing ground to Seavey and requiring him to regather and repursue at another juncture. However, with no warning in between turns three and four a half-lap later, Grant's right rear wheel center broke, jettisoning his wheel, which careened off the outside wall before bouncing nearly the length of the front straightaway.
Grant managed to avoid wall contact, then returned to action at the tail of the field on the ensuing restart. The series point leader's attempt at equaling J.J. Yeley's 2003 record USAC National Sprint Car streak of 14 top-five finishes to begin a season came just short. Grant's run of 13 consecutive concluded on this night, although, after a reinstallation of his right rear wheel, he came from the back of the pack to finish 8th.
Around the halfway mark, Leary continued rolling, expanding his lead to 1.5 sec. as the quest for second began to pick up steam. First, Windom slid by Seavey for the runner-up spot in turn one on the 15th lap. Seavey countered back under to retake the position in turn three. Windom filmed a second take one lap later, mimicking the same turn one maneuver he tried a lap later to secure second while Bacon faked high and ducked low to zip by Seavey for third on the bottom of three.
By that point, Leary had upped his command to over two seconds, yet it soon began dwindling as he picked his way through traffic. Despite setting a substantially quicker pace, Leary had to force the issue a bit on occasion in order to be on the offensive and be on the attack in terms of track position with Windom, Bacon and others clamping down in the latter stages.
"In lapped traffic, we were so much faster," Leary recalled. "We came up on them quick, so you really just had to bomb them."
Windom ably shrunk Leary's interval to three-quarters of a second, and with seven to go, took his shot at Leary with a turn one slider. However, when Windom realized he wasn't going to clear him, he pitched his car a little too far sideways and nearly spun, freely admitting he may have made the pass attempt just a half-lap too early.
As Windom gathered it back up, Leary recouped his advantage once again while Bacon closed for second in the meantime. As it turned out, that proved to be the final challenge presented to Leary as he raced to a 1.057 margin of victory over Windom, Bacon, Chase Stockon and Carson Short.
With his victory, Leary's 12th overall win at the track equaled the previous summer's Lawrenceburg ISW winner, Grant, as the winningest sprint car driver on the 3/8-mile iteration of the track, which began in 2008.
Bacon's third-place finish allowed him to move to the point lead of Indiana Sprint Week by five markers with four races remaining over Grant with Chase Stockon third (-7), Leary fourth (-17) and Kyle Cummins (-23).
Grant's Fatheadz Eyewear Fast Qualifying time earlier in the evening was his second during ISW after previously setting the standard in Friday's opener at Gas City. It was also Grant's 26th career USAC Sprint quick time, tying him with Jay Drake and C.J. Leary for 14th all-time.

Bruno takes third win; Mahoney is fifth first-time Mini Stock winner
WEST HAVEN, Vt. – Tim Fuller secured $1,500 and bragging rights at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, July 25, taking the “Saturday Night Special” for Small Block 358 Modifieds – and, more importantly, building momentum for the upcoming “Battle at the Bowl” event on August 9. Johnny Bruno and rookie Griff Mahoney also grabbed big wins at the event.
Fuller made the long, four-hour haul from Edwards, N.Y., pay off as he dominated the 35-lap special event. Fuller benefitted from a random invert draw to start on the pole position and then bested a field of 27 cars for the first win of his storied career at the Vermont track. The race was stalled by several caution periods for backmarkers, but Fuller was rock-solid at every restart despite the challenges of Rocky Warner and Neil Stratton.
Warner ran in second place for most of the race, briefly giving up the spot to Stratton late in the going. Warner engaged in an entertaining multi-car battle, dicing with Stratton, Adam Pierson, and eventually Mike Maresca, often in lapped traffic. Maresca was the star of the show after rebounding from an early crash; he was running in the top five in the early laps, but made a pit stop after hitting the wall hard. Maresca drove from outside the top 20 to steal third from Pierson in the final lap.
Pierson finished fourth and Stratton was fifth. Jessey Mueller was next in line, followed by Randy Green and Frank Hoard III. Justin Comes had an impressive run to finish ninth with a Crate Sportsman car. Hector Stratton rounded out the top 10 in his first race since September 2019. Qualifying heats were won by Demetrios Drellos, Maresca, and Pierson, and Michael Horton won the last-chance consolation qualifier.
Point leader Johnny Bruno grabbed his third win of the season in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman division after an entertaining 25-lap run. Kevin Groff and Scott FitzGerald set the pace for most of the event, with Groff leading the first 16 laps while under pressure. FitzGerald completed the pass to take over on lap 17, but Bruno and Anthony Warren pounced at the same time, making it a three-wide fight up front.
FitzGerald held the lead when a caution flag flew at the end of lap 17, and he was able to lead four laps after the restart, but Castleton, Vt.’s Bruno took command for the final four circuits and drove away. Warren, charging hard on the outside lane, finished second with FitzGerald third. Lacey Hanson finished fourth and Groff held on for fifth. Austin Comes was sixth, followed by Matt Bilodeau, Randy Ryan, Gary English, and Garrett Given. Heats were won by Groff, Jeff White, and Warren.
Rookie Griff Mahoney became the fifth consecutive driver to earn his first-ever win in the Mini Stock division. The Bristol, Vt., racer led the first half of the race, but had a bad restart just after the halfway mark of the 20-lap feature and fell back to fifth place. Chris Sumner and Michael Daniels each took turns leading, but Mahoney drove back around both to retake command at lap 18.
Daniels took the runner-up finish with point leader Chris Conroy taking third; it was Conroy’s eighth podium finish in as many races in 2020. Brian Blake was fourth for his best finish. Tim Simonds crossed the finish line fifth, but was disqualified for an engine infraction; T.J. Knight was moved up into fifth place as a result. Mahoney and Daniels won the qualifying heats. Katrina Bean and Justin Allen both walked away uninjured after violent rollovers; Bean’s crash happened before the first lap was completed, and Allen’s happened moments after the race ended.
Devil’s Bowl Speedway is back in action on Sunday, July 26, at 7:00 p.m. All five of the track’s weekly divisions will be in action, along with the first race for Pro Stocks in two years. Limited grandstand seating and infield drive-in spectator parking is available. Grandstand tickets are $15 and infield tickets are $20. HOPKINSON WINS THRILLING WALL STADIUM MODIFIED OPENER
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Derek Hopkinson raced from tenth on the starting grid to grab the lead with three laps remaining to win the long awaited season opening 40-lap Modified stock car feature race at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the spectator gathering was limited in size for the season opener that was delayed since late April.
Defending champion Steven Reed and Blake Barney, both of Jackson, wrestled side-by-side for the lead in the early going as Eddie McCarthy of Brock and Holmdel's Andrew Krause watched from third and fourth positions. Krause and McCarthy slipped into second and third spots near lap 15 with Krause soon swinging to the outside lane to battle side-by-side for the top spot.
Krause was finally able to inch into the lead at the halfway point, but this race was far from over. Meanwhile, Hopkinson had climbed into third position.
Reed regained the lead with an inside lane pass on a lap 27 restart and Hopkinson was quick to take over second. Hopkinson then shadowed Reed until lap 37 when he muscled his way into the inside lane and then raced on for the win. Reed, Krause, Barney and Manasquan's Kenny Van Wickle completed the top five.
“The car was great to be able to get me to the front from tenth,” Hopkinson said after the win. “At the end of the race I knew I had to get to the inside. I just had to drive it in there and hope for the best. It worked out for me tonight!”
Bryan O'Shea of Neptune City was in the spotlight the entire way as he won the 25-lapper for the Factory Stock cars. Billy Both of Rahway chased him to the finish, while defending champion Elliott Wohl of Beachwood was third. Manchester's Scott Riggleman and Howell's John Carpenter wrapped up the top five.
Early leader Alonzo Morales of Burlington and Wall's TJ Graves offered up a battle royal through most of the 25 lap 4 Cylinder Stock main event as Neptune City's Ryan Maher ran a tight third. But when the lead duo tangled on the front stretch with one lap to go and Graves spun from contention, Maher was able to avoid the mayhem and race to his career first main event win. Morales recovered for second, while Ian Ashford of Farmingdale, Chuck McDonald of Groton, Ct. and Doug Ashford of Farmingdale wrapped up the top five. Graves was scored 11th.
Howell's Eric Lane raced to victory in the season's first 25-lapper for the Sportsman racers. Jarret DiGiantomasso of Jackson was the early leader in this race, but when his motor exploded on lap seven the resulting oil spill also ruined the night for his brother, Carsten DiGiantomasso. Brick's Robert Sutphin was also involved in the resulting tangle but was able to continue.
Lane picked up the lead at that point and raced on to the win. Sutphin recovered from that early flat tire to finish second, while Jonathan Laureigh of Lanoka Harbor, Jake Nelke of Manahawkin and Neil Rutt III of Edison were third through fifth.
Daniel Carter of Cortland, N.Y. grabbed the win in the Legend Cars 25-lapper, fighting off Kevin Nowak of Medford, N.Y. most of the way. Bryan Gardella of Brick and Quinn Trimmer of Waldwick wrapped up the top five.
Defending Limited Late Model champ Chris Silvestri of Hazlet outlasted the competition to win a shortened opening night main event. Jackson's Greg Gastelu, Mike Tillett of Bayville. Buddy Miller and Stephen Puglisi wrapped up the top five.
The 2020 Saturday night regular season continues this Saturday (August 1) evening with the Modifieds, Sportsman cars, Factory Stocks, 4 Cylinder Stocks, Legend Cars and the Limited Late Models in action. On this evening the speedway will observe its 70th anniversary with a celebration that will feature several special guests. The pit area will open at 12:30 p.m. Grandstands will open at 4:30 p.m., qualifying starts at 5:45 p.m. and main event action starts at 7:00 p.m.
Current plans call for Saturday night racing action to continue through early October with schedule details at wallspeedwayracing.com.

CLEAN AIR CRUISING: David Gravel wins Summer Nationals at Williams Grove
Brad Sweet reclaims the points lead after Donny Schatz suffers a DNF
MECHANICSBURG, PA – July 25, 2020 – David Gravel knew a second-place starting spot in the Feature would lead to his first Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals at Williams Grove Speedway Saturday night.
He had six laps and two cars to pass to achieve that goal in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash – which lineups the first four rows of the Feature by the finishing order.
However, once the Dash commenced, he made quick work of the task. He blew by local PA Posse members Brock Zearfoss and Lance Dewease on the first lap to take the runner-up spot and hold it until the finish.
With his goal achieved, he knew the race could be his. His main obstacle was to steal the lead away from polesitter and 10-time World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz.
When the Feature went green, he made it so.
Gravel led from green to checkers at the historic half-mile Pennsylvania track, earning his seventh win at the speedway, his third win of the season and the $20,000 top prize.
“Clean air in winged (Sprint Car) racing is so important,” said Gravel, of Watertown, CT. “We’ve been struggling with the pill draw in the Dash and we finally got a good one. You wanted to start on the outside row there (for the Feature). My goal was to finish second. I knew if I could do that, I could get the jump on the start and control the race.”
The top lane was dominate all night with those starting on the outside pole always getting the jump on starts to take the lead. The Feature was no different with Gravel pulling ahead of Schatz for the lead before they entered Turn 1 on the initial start. With the advantage of clean air, Gravel could pull ahead of the field by a second in one lap.
Schatz was the first to try and contend with the Jason Johnson #41 car, but his fight lasted two laps. With a pop heard among the roar of the 25 410 c.i. engines, Schatz’s car appeared to be the source of the sound as he slowed to a stop on the backstretch during the second lap of the Feature. The undiagnosed mechanical issue was enough to take the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing #15 car out of the race – Schatz’s first DNF since September.
With Schatz out of the race, that moved Lance Dewease into second and reigning champion Brad Sweet into third. Four cautions – including an open red – gave Dewease four opportunities to try and challenge Gravel but each time Gravel was too strong. Dewease couldn’t stay with the Mesilla Valley Transportation #41 car on the restarts and eventually feel to the clutches of Sweet.
“I knew Lance is known to slide himself in (turns) three and four and carry a lot of entrance speed, so I was just trying to protect on the restarts,” Gravel said. “I knew running the top I was getting a lot of momentum on exit. I just hoped I had a big enough gap and luckily it worked out.”
Sweet got by Dewease for second in the early stage of the race, but only held the position for a lap before the famed Hess Iron #69K drove its way back by Sweet’s NAPA Auto Parts #49 car. From then on Sweet became a pong ball between Dewease and fourth-place Logan Schuchart. Some laps he’d close on Dewease and others he’d fad and have to fend off Schuchart.
By the end of the 30 laps, Gravel crossed the finish line with a 4.1 second lead over Dewease. Sweet held on to third to round out the podium.
“With the way the race track was tonight, we weren’t very good,” Dewease said. “I was happy with the single file starts. I got real tight after that red (flag). Brad kept getting runs at me and runs at me. We had a pretty good race there sliding each other and I run back by him. I was just happy to finish second with the way the track was tonight.”
Schatz’s misfortune handed the points lead back to Sweet, who now has an 18-point lead over second-place Logan Schuchart – who finished fourth in the Feature. Schatz fell to third – now 26 points behind Sweet.
"I saw Donny have his issues but (points) didn't even cross my mind," Sweet said. "I just kind of thought, it moved me up a spot. We just want to win."
Sheldon Haudenschild’s hot streak of top-10s came to an end Saturday night due to a broken rear end. Before the night, he had 18 top-10s in a row, including his win at Lincoln Speedway. He is still fifth in points, but now 100 points behind Sweet.
Carson Macedo, who struggled at Williams Grove Speedway last year, had a solid weekend, finishing ninth and eighth, respectively. He maintains the fourth rank in points – 70 points behind Sweet.
While Gravel is out of the hunt for the points championship this year after missing a race during the DIRTcar Nationals, Jason Johnson Racing is still in the hunt for the team championship. JJR is tied with TSR for third in points – 26 points behind Kasey Kahne Racing with three months of racing to go in 2020.

LEARY BOUNCES BACK WITH VICTORY AT KOKOMO ISW ROUND #2

Kokomo, Indiana (July 25, 2020).........In most aspects of life, an individual creates their own luck by being in the right place at the right time all while performing to their maximum capabilities.
However, on occasion, sometimes a stroke of luck is what it takes to make that final extra push to propel one to the brink of success.
Following an incident in Friday night's NOS Energy Drink Indiana Sprint Week opener at Gas City in which he was running 4th and collected multiple other front running cars, C.J. Leary found lady luck back on his side following a spin by race leader Tyler Courtney with just three laps remaining Saturday night in the second round of NOS Energy Drink Indiana Sprint Week at Kokomo Speedway.
From thereon, Leary was fully en route to winning time aboard his Leary Racing/Valvoline - Gray Auto - Leary Construction/DRC/1-Way Chevy, the fourth career ISW win for the Greenfield, Ind. native who captured both the ISW championship and USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car crown the year prior in 2019.
Leary's 10th career series victory moved him past Mario Andretti, Hunter Schuerenberg and Robbie Stanley for 49th on the all-time feature win list.
"Last night we just stepped on it. The driver made a mistake," Leary point blanked. "Just like what Courtney did tonight, when you're racing as hard as we are now, mistakes happen. Sometimes, it costs more than others. To come back tonight and get a win is great, I feel like we've been really fast all year and we were really fast last year, and we only won two races."
Those two victories and the championship that came along with it were part of Leary's sensational 2019 season as the pilot of the Reinbold-Underwood Motorsports ride. The Reinbold-Underwood team won Friday's ISW opener at Gas City with Logan Seavey at the wheel while Leary managed just a 13th place result after the incident.
It was an encounter by Leary and his former team owner during the post-race at Gas City that, as it turned out, may have provided a little bit of that good fortune for Leary come Saturday night at Kokomo.
"Last night, I went over and talked to (team owner) Andy (Reinbold) after the race. I was like, 'man we should've won this one last year and now you guys won it this year for some redemption. You guys got all the luck. I'm going to pit next to you tomorrow and steal some of that luck.' (Reinbold-Underwood Motorsports crew chief Tyler Ransbottom) came over after tonight's race and said, 'don't ever pit next to me again,'" Leary said with a laugh.
Leary rolled off for the start of the 30-lap main from outside of the front row. Carson Short occupied the pole but found himself in a world of trouble as he became a little too far sideways between turns one and two on the opening lap. Leary took evasive action, tapping the breaks, then moving to the outside around Short as second row starters Justin Grant and Tyler Courtney raced by underneath, running one-two in that order at the line with Leary now third.
After leading the opening lap, Grant slid up off the bottom in turn two as Courtney motored by underneath and into the race lead. Courtney planted his car firmly on the bottom around the tires with Grant and 2016 Kokomo ISW feature winner Kyle Cummins running second and third.
On the seventh lap, Leary went for the 7/10 split between Grant and Cummins at the flag stand, first zipping by Cummins, then sliding up in front of Grant at the exit of turn two to execute a two-fer to reach the runner-up spot, then began his pursuit of Courtney and the race lead.
Ten laps in, Courtney, perhaps with a glimpse of Leary lurking beside him, altered his approach by moving topside. Leary, thus, altered his gameplan in response and dove to the bottom of turn one on the 13th lap, slide jobbing his way into the lead. However, lapped traffic was now within arm's reach of the frontrunner, beginning a see-saw battle between the past two USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champions for much of the remaining duration.
Courtney gathered himself up on the bottom and raced to a near-dead-heat at the line alongside Leary with 12 laps remaining. On the following lap, Jerry Coons Jr. and Colten Cottle ran two-wide at the tail end of the lead lap, boxing Courtney in on the low groove while Leary split the gap entering turn three and led the lap by two car lengths. A lap later, on the 21st go-around, the verdict was Courtney at the line by a wheel, and vice-versa with the roles reversed on the 22nd circuit with Leary staking his claim up front for the time being.
Courtney attempted to steal Leary's line at the top away in turn two with eight laps remaining as he slid up to the cushion. Leary never hesitated, kept his foot on the throttle, and ziplined through the eye of the needle to escape the clutches of Courtney as he raced downhill off turn two to retain the lead, which Leary then constructed to five car lengths by the entrance of turn three while Courtney aimed to regain traction and take another shot at Leary.
Leary appeared to be in as comfortable of a spot as he had been all race, hand-in-hand with the lead of the race until he slid up in front of Thomas Meseraull in traffic in turn two with six laps left on the board. Leary drifted to the top, then slipped a tad over the cushion, which was just enough to cause him to stumble and allow Courtney's momentum to wheelstand into the top spot. Courtney slid past Leary entering turn three to complete the process of the pass, stumbled a bit himself on the turn four exit, yet still had enough get back to the stripe a half-car length ahead of Leary.
C.J. Leary's fourth career NOS Energy Drink Indiana Sprint Week win was also the 10th of his USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car career, moving him past Mario Andretti, Hunter Schuerenberg and Robbie Stanley for 49th on the all-time list.

Courtney immediately clamped down, snaring the low line away from Leary and slid himself into the first turn before rapidly ascending his advantage to nine lengths ahead of Leary. Appearing to now have the race as well within hand as it's been all night with three laps to go and with traffic now relatively cleared away, suddenly, Courtney found himself spun around backwards to a stop at the bottom of turn two, bringing an end to his bid for a first Kokomo Indiana Sprint Week victory after four other previous USAC Sprint scores.
With a three-lap shootout the only thing now standing between Leary and victory, plus the two winningest drivers with the series in Grant and Brady Bacon behind him, Leary took off at the drop of the green with might. Meanwhile, Bacon slid his way into the second spot by Grant in turn one for second.
Bacon, or anyone else for that matter, was no match for Leary in the final stanza with which he, the 2015 Kokomo track champion and now three-time USAC Sprint winner at Kokomo, cruised to a 1.254 second victory over Bacon, Grant, Robert Ballou and Chase Stockon.
Meanwhile, in Fatheadz Qualifying, Bacon embarked on another milestone in his USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car career by recording his 36th fast qualifying time. That moved the two-time series champion past Rich Vogler on the list and into 6th all-time alongside Bryan Clauson.

FREMONT, Ohio – Michael Buddy Kofoid brought a bunch of midget experts to some 410 sprint car races this weekend. The results? The Penngrove, California driver swept the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series Presented by the Baumann Auto Group.
On Operational Support Services Night, Saturday, July 25 at Fremont Speedway, Kofoid, the defending track champion, took the lead for good on lap 10 after a spirited battle with Nate Dussel and drove his Keith Kunz/Pete Willoughby sprint car to his third career win at “The Track That Action Built.” Kofoid has been the pilot of the KKM midgets this season on the USAC and POWRi trail, winning several features.
“I never swept a weekend before in sprint cars. I was doing the math today the last sprint car race for this team was 10 months on the dot. To do this and two new cars with different shock packages and everything and come out and win both nights and lead a lot of laps is pretty cool. Pete and Keith and Jarrett (Martin) and Grant (Penn) and Chuck (Gurney)…they work their asses off. Jarrett and Grant are both so smart and they work so hard and I’m glad to do this for them and also Toyota and Mobil 1,” said Kofoid.
“I figured Christopher was coming and lapped traffic made it difficult at the end and my brakes started to fade at the end…they got so hot. I was just trying to stay smooth. Christopher told me whoever starts in front of the other…we have a good shot at winning. He told me ‘don’t mess up you should win.’ Christopher is one of the best at this track and he’s beat me up here before. I’m glad the cards are turning,” added Kofoid beside his IWX Motor Freight backed #67.
Paul Weaver dominated the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 A-main until a lapped car spun in front of him and Weaver slid to a stop to avoid him. Alvin Roepke inherited the lead with two laps to go and drove to his eighth career Fremont victory.
The feature finish will certainly shake up the standings for the NAPA of Bryan AFCS Presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales 305 Sprint Cars.
“Paul had us covered but we will take it. After qualifying and the heat I was ready to give up. This engine has like 40 or 50 shows on it….it’s tired but Dennis Level builds a hell of a motor and by feature time it’s good to go. Driving a sprint car is the coolest thing in the world and winning at Fremont Speedway is the best experience,” said Roepke beside his Napa Auto Parts, Crown Battery, Woodville Mutual, Computer Man, Darmofal Racing backed #99.
The finish is certain the shake up the battle for the NAPA Auto Parts of Bryan AFCS Presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales standings.
After a spirited three truck battle early, Fostoria, Ohio’s Shawn Valenti drove into the lead at the half-way point of the Burmeister Trophy Dirt Truck feature and drove to his third feature win of the season. It was his 58th career Fremont victory, putting him into a tie with Jim Linder for fifth on the track’s all-time win list.
“It’s good hard racing. Cory (McCaughey) is tough in that 911 truck. Hopefully we put on a show for the fans. Can’t thank the Babcocks enough for giving me this opportunity and A Plus Auto Center for putting up some extra cash and being a damn good sponsor,” said Valenti beside his Best Performance Motorsports; A Plus Auto Center; Craig Miller Trucking; KS Sales & Service; Gressman Powersports; Dave Story Equipment, Speedways Bar and Grill backed #7B.
Dussel and Kofoid brought the field to green for the 30-lap Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint A with Dussel, who crashed hard the previous night, taking the lead over Kofoid, Cale Thomas, DJ Foos, Cole Macedo, Cap Henry and Bell. Kofoid caught Dussel on lap seven and took the lead a circuit later only to see Dussel retake the spot on the ninth lap.
Just as the leaders were set to enter lapped traffic third running Thomas spun. A lap later another caution but when the green flew again so did Kofoid, opening up his advantage over Dussel as Macedo, Henry and Bell put on a fantastic battle for third.
Kofoid’s nearly two second lead vanished when the caution flew on lap 19. When the race resumed Kofoid pulled away while Dussel had to contend with Bell who finally took the runner-up spot on lap 22. Once into second Bell steadily closed on Kofoid and with just three laps to go had knocked a half second off of the lead.
Bell got over the cushion in turn two on the final lap and Kofoid cruised to the win. Bell, Dussel, Macedo and Foos rounded out the top five.
The win was worth $4,000 to Kofoid thanks to Spanky’s Pizza of Carey, Ohio. A Plus Auto Center also added another $100 to the winner’s pockets.
The front row for the 25 lap 305 sprint A-main was comprised of Seth Schneider and Kyle Peters and Schneider quickly jumped into the lead with third starter Paul Weaver moving into second. The top two duo pulled away from a tremendous battle for third involving Peters, Matt Foos, Roepke and Kyle Capodice.
The leaders drove into heavy lapped traffic by lap six and it proved costly for Schneider who got upside down on lap eight, handing the lead to Weaver. On the restart Weaver pulled away over Peters, Foos, Roepke, Steve Rando and Jamie Miller.
Brandon Moore and Mike Keegan tangled on lap 11, keeping the field close to Weaver. As soon as the green flew so did Weaver, pulling away to a three second lead in just a few laps. Meanwhile Peters, Roepke, Foos and Rando waged war for the runner-up spot.
A caution with just six laps to go seemed to put the finishing touches to the feature as Weaver was kept out of lapped traffic. But, with three laps to go, a lapped car spun right in front of Weaver and he jumped the cushion and came to a rest, giving the lead to Roepke.
Roepke held off Peters for the win with Rando, Miller and Foos rounding out the top five.
Miller and Jim Holcomb comprised the front row of the dirt truck feature and when the green flew Miller grabbed the lead over Holcomb, Dustin Keegan, Ben Clapp and Kyle Lagrou. Holcomb spun with just two laps in and a mechanical issue for one of the competitors on the restart brought another yellow flag. When the green flew Keegan grabbed the lead from Miller just before a couple of cautions.
When the race finally went back to green on lap eight, Keegan had his hands full with 11th starter Valenti and Cory McCaughey. Valenti took the lead on lap 10 with Keegan battling McCaughey with Miller Lagrou and Brad Stuckey giving chase.
A caution with just three laps to go put last week’s winner McCaughey on Valenti’s rear bumper but Valenti hit his marks perfectly and drove to the win over McCaughey, Miller, Holcomb and Keegan.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, Aug. 1 with the AFCS 410 and 305 sprints and dirt trucks.
