Kyle Larson defeats All Stars and Posse for Tommy Hinnershitz Classic victory
MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (July 17, 2020) - Forced to track down one of Pennsylvania’s finest, Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson continued his open wheel winning ways on Friday night during a visit to the world-famous Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, this time claiming the annual Tommy Hinnershitz Classic for a $5,000 payday over a stacked field of Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1, World of Outlaws and Pennsylvania Posse competitors.
Larson’s route to Williams Grove Speedway victory lane did not come easy, as the now eight-time Series winner in 2020 did not take command for the first time until lap 27, ultimately using lapped traffic within the final five circuits to hunt down race-long leader Anthony Macri before driving around the familiar No. 39M between turns three and four on lap 27. Certainly no stranger to the Williams Grove half-mile, Larson put himself in striking distance on lap 22, utilizing momentum and a diving move across the bottom of turn three to take second away from Kerry Madsen.
Macri, who led from the drop of the green before losing command to Larson, held on to finish second in the Tommy Hinnershitz Classic main event, followed by Kerry Madsen, David Gravel and Daryn Pittman.
“This is pretty cool. Anytime you can win over a field like this is pretty special, especially at Williams Grove Speedway,” Kyle Larson said, driver of the Paul Silva-owned/Finley Farms/Tarlton and Sons/Durst/Lucas Oil/No. 57 sprint car. “I thought we were pretty good all night. Once we got to halfway, I knew it was time to pick it up a little bit if we wanted to be there at the end. I was able to carry a lot of speed through the corners and that really helped us out, even when we got into some traffic. Paul Silva does a pretty awesome job getting these cars to drive to well. Hopefully we can keep this going.”
Before Larson made his presence known, Macri was forced to deal with Kerry Madsen. Madsen, aboard the Killer Instinct Crossbows No. 2M, got away second after the initial start and maintained a steady distance from Macri until the frontrunners found traffic for the first time on lap eight. Forced to check up and lose momentum, Madsen took advantage and gained ground on Macri, eventually racing himself to a car length by the completion of lap nine.
Even after a caution on lap 16, which allowed Macri to restart with a clear track and clean air ahead, Madsen kept himself in contention, actually trying to slide Macri on lap 17, and again on lap 19. Although both attempts failed, the slider exchanges allowed Larson to enter the picture by lap 22.
With eight Series victories thus far in 2020, Kyle Larson is now on top of the wins leaderboard. Two-time and defending All Star champion, Aaron Reutzel, is second with seven.

WINDOM WRANGLES UP WIN AT JEFFERSON COUNTY
By: Richie Murray - USAC Media
Fairbury, Nebraska (July 17, 2020).........Chris Windom withstood Buddy Kofoid's repeated, relentless challenges down the stretch, including during a hellacious final four lap trophy dash to the finish, to capture his third USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget feature victory of the season in Friday night's Riverside Chevrolet-Buick-Cadillac Midwest Midget Championship presented by Westin Meats & Schmidt's Sanitation at Fairbury, Nebraska's Jefferson County Speedway.
In a 30-lap feature that was stop-and-start throughout, with a number of cautions and a pair of red flags impeding the proceedings, Windom worked his way to the lead just prior to midway after pole sitter Ethan Mitchell led the first four laps of his USAC career while Cannon McIntosh controlled the front of the pack from lap five until Windom worked his way by on the 12th circuit just following a restart.
Windom found it much easier to catch rather than pass at the 1/5-mile dirt oval on this particular night. However, Windom felt that door was being left open on restarts, which allowed him to get a run to take the top spot from McIntosh after multiple attempts in turn three on back-to-back laps. Windom officially claimed the number one position just prior to a caution for the stopped car of Cole Bodine in turn four on lap 13.
A rhythm was difficult to find as the laps clicked away on the southeastern Nebraska metronome, but Windom was right on beat as he opened up his lead to 1.5 seconds and encroached on the tail of the field in the waning stages.
Yet, as Windom began to track down traffic that was running three and four-wide at times, Kofoid was right on his trail, closing to within a couple car lengths of Windom with four laps remaining.
In the thick of the battle, third running Tanner Thorson, who had earlier set Fatheadz Fast Qualifying time, spun to a stop in turn two to bring out the final yellow. While another stoppage wasn't ideal for the rhythm section of the equation, Windom wasn't all that bummed to see the yellow light.
"I was really happy to see that caution because, actually, under the last caution, I had leaned the car down and I forgot to turn the fuel back on. I felt like we were running on six cylinders and thought we were blowing up. It was really just my own fault there, so luckily, we got that figured out."
Now without traffic as a hindrance, Windom had another battle to wage, the one under his helmet, where he had to decide where on the track to go in order to keep a hungry, first-win-seeking Kofoid behind him.
"The restart, and a couple of laps after the restarts, were the toughest part, really," Windom explained. "You could get such a big run if you threw a slider into one. It was hard to decide, as the leader, whether to go to the top or slide yourself and lose momentum. At the end of the day, it all worked out, but it was definitely a hellacious last couple of laps."
It worked out A-Okay for Windom during the first couple of laps following the restart, but Kofoid was setting up his next move that he ultimately made with two laps remaining, sliding by Windom entering the first turn with little room to spare. Windom made contact with the rear bumper of Kofoid, elevating all four wheels of Windom's Tucker-Boat Motorsports/NOS Energy Drink - Pristine Auction/Spike/Speedway Toyota off the racing surface.
"He ran us hard there, and when he slid me in one and two, I just ran him hard back," Windom recalled. "That's how you have to pass guys here, though. No fault of him, really, sliding me hard. I felt like I had taken control of the race, though, and I was really not going to let that slip away at the end, so I did what I had to do to keep the win."

'He ran us hard there, and when he slid me in one and two, I just ran him hard back,' Windom recalled. 'That's how you have to pass guys here, though. No fault of him, really, sliding me hard. I felt like I had taken control of the race, though, and I was really not going to let that slip away at the end, so I did what I had to do to keep the win.'

Once Windom landed on all fours, he took off straight for the bottom of turn three as Daison Pursley stuck a nose in to the battle to briefly make it three-wide on the back straightaway. Windom got to the bottom first, exited off turn four and, as he sped underneath the white flag, attempted to jet back to the bottom of turn one, resulting in contact between Kofoid's front chrome and Windom's rear bumper.
That move slowed up Windom's momentum off turn two, but Kofoid was only able to get half a car length under Windom as Windom made a beeline back to the bottom of turn three, forcing Kofoid and Pursley to try high as a last ditch effort, to no avail, as Windom sprinted to the checkered flag for the fifth time in his USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget career by two car lengths over Kofoid, Pursley, Tyler Thomas and Cannon McIntosh.
While Windom came into Jefferson County as the point leader, he has been a force all year with top-five finishes in all but one of his 12 series starts. Despite that fact, the Canton, Ill. driver readily admitted that it was during Indiana Midget Week, where they won five of six races, that the individuals on the crew and behind the wheel realized how much potential they had.
"Having (Kyle) Larson come in and run with us, it definitely made everyone step their game up a little bit," Windom revealed of the four-time IMW 2020 winner and champion. "He gets 100 percent out of the racetrack every single night and makes you be better. We had already won a race and run up front, but he definitely showed how much speed there really is in these cars. It's nice to be able to keep showing it and keep picking off the wins."

Hafertepe Hustles The Highside For Lucas Oil ASCS Victory At U.S. 36 Raceway
Bryan Hulbert – OSBORN, Mo. (July 17, 2020) Working the Highline at U.S. 36 Raceway, Sam Hafertepe, Jr. held off numerous challenges and, at times, heavy lapped traffic Friday night U.S. 36 Raceway for his 51st career victory with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network.

Winner Sam Hafertepe, Jr. (Terry Ford Photo)
Sam's fourth win with the Tour in 2020, the Hills Racing No. 15h, gave chase from the fourth starting spot as third starting Harli White took off with the race lead after going three-wide into the first turn. Moving to second on the opening lap, traffic came into the picture by Lap 5 with Sam taking over the lead on Lap 7, only to have a caution negate the pass.
Going slide for slide on the ensuing restart with six laps officially complete, Hafertepe grabbed the point the following lap. Driving back around the No. 15 to lead Lap 8, White was again challenged for the lead with Hafertepe able to fend off the Dustin Dream No. 17w, all while Blake Hahn nearly drove by both drivers with a high line run off the fourth turn as they started back into traffic.
On the battle with White, Sam stated, "I knew lapped traffic was going to be tough and that let Blake [Hahn] almost get by both of us when we were battling for the lead with Harli. That's how it usually goes here, but I have to say, the track was awesome. This is probably the best surface I've ever seen here. To have it on the wall in one and two, and on the top in three and four. If I'm a fan, I couldn't ask from more than that."
Keeping the No. 52 at bay, Hahn settled into second.
Holding pace with Hafertepe, the pair worked traffic as the caution shown working Lap 16. Reverting to the last fully completed lap on the restart, the green was short-lived as Shayle Bade flipped in the turn one while running ninth. She was okay.
Going after Hafertepe on the restart, Hahn settled back into Sam's tire tracks with the pair pulling away from the field. Taking one more shot on the bottom of turns three and four as the pair raced to the white flag, it was not enough as Hafertepe opened his advantage to 0.405-seconds on the closing lap.
"I was actually struggling on one and two when we got into traffic," commented Sam. "They were running the bottom and kicking up so much dust off the infield, I couldn't see where the cushion was, or how close I was to the wall, and I didn't want to jeopardize anything, so I cheated it down there a few times, but at the end on open track, I felt like we had plenty."
Blake Hahn held on for second with Ayrton Gennetten posting his first podium finish with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network in the Ozark Barge and Dock No. 3 after a torrid battle with Harli White, who ended up fourth. Moving up from 10th, Matt Covington completed the top five.
The night's Hard Charger from 17th, Roger Crockett ended up sixth with Danny Sams III in seventh after starting 13th. Brodix Rookie of the Year contender, Ryan Bickett, landed his first top ten of the season with an eighth-place finish while Alex Hill earned her second top ten of the year, going from 15h to ninth. Jay Russell completed the top ten.
A field of 30 drivers was on hand at U.S. 36 Raceway from 10 States and three Countries.
SCE Gaskets Heat Race wins went to Riley Goodno, Shayle Bade, Jay Russell, and Sam Hafertepe, Jr. Roger Crockett topped the BMRS B-Feature. Provisionals were used by Jordon Mallett and Travis Reber based on ASCS Owner Points.
The next event for the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network is the 30th Annual My Place Hotels 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank, happening August 6, 7, and 8 at Knoxville Raceway. Tickets are on sale at www.knoxvilleraceway.com.

CLASSIC BANDIT: Kyle Larson takes first Brad Doty Classic win
Brad Sweet’s bad continues, allowing Donny Schatz and others to make big points gains
ATTICA, OH – July 15, 2020 – By the time the checkered flag fell at Attica Raceway Park Tuesday night, there wasn’t enough room on the front page of the morning paper to fit all of the headlines.
* Kyle Larson held off 10-time World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series champion Donny
Schatz to win the Ohio Logisitics Brad Doty Classic presented by Racing Optics – his first Classic
win, first World of Outlaws win at Attica and third World of Outlaws win in a row.
* Reigning champion Brad Sweet’s string of bad luck continued, suffering his third DNF in a row. He now
holds a two point lead over Schatz.
* The father and son duo of Sheldon Haudenschild and Jac Haudenschild put on a show in the top-five,
trading slide jobs and swapping positions all night long.
“It’s one that I think everyone looks forward to running,” Larson said about winning the Brad Doty Classic and claiming the $10,000 top prize. “Brad (Doty) is such a nice guy and has done so much for this sport, long before I was born. It’s cool to get the opportunity to run this race. I got beat by Donny the last time we ran here, so it was good to edge him there.”
Larson was a dominate force all night. He won his Drydene Heat Race, drew the number one pill for the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash and then won the Dash by four seconds to start on the pole for the 40-lap Feature.
Sweet was on track to have a similarly strong night in the early stage of the event. He set Quick Time in Flight 2 of Qualifying and had a commanding lead in his Heat Race before his motor let go – a similar scenario Schatz faced on Sunday at the Terre Haute Action Track. Sweet then won the Last Chance Showdown, earning him the 21st starting spot for the Feature out of 25 cars.
When the Feature commenced, Larson left Schatz. He pulled away to about a second lead in the first two laps before the caution came out for Sweet spinning in Turn 4. With no damage, he got pointed in the right direction and continued.
The green flag flew again and Larson continued to be a missile on four wheels. While Schatz could keep the Finley Farms #57 in sight in the first two corners, Larson would find another gear and rocket away from the field. He was able to maneuver through lap traffic with the apparent foresight of where they would go.
On Lap 17, Logan Schuchart and Kerry Madsen made contact, putting Madsen in the wall. Carson Macedo spun while trying to avoid the wreck and made contact with Ian Madsen and caused Sweet to flip.
Enough repairs were made to Sweet’s car to get him back on track with seconds to spare. However, with a damaged wing and other bent parts, Sweet was well off the pace. Another red flag came out a lap later, allowing Sweet’s Kasey Kahne Racing team to continue working on the NAPA Auto Parts #49. The repairs helped him pick up more speed, but with three laps to go he slowed with another issue and pulled off track – the first time since 2013 he’s had three consecutive DNFs.
Before then, Larson made qualifying laps while Schatz searched to match his speed. And behind them the father and son duo of Sheldon Haudenschild and Jac Haudenschild put on the show of the night. They officially swapped positions four times throughout the race, but were side by side, feet apart throughout the 40-lap event.
Larson hit heavy traffic in the closing laps, allowing Schatz to close in and have thoughts of stealing the win away from him. Schatz showed Larson his nose a couple of times, but Larson found clean air and rocketed away again before Schatz could attempt a pass.
“It was nice I could look back and see they were half of a track behind me,” Larson said. “We had a good car there… Whenever I would get within a straightaway of lap traffic, I couldn’t see the cushion and started to make mistakes and thought I could cheat the corner and slide myself. I say Donny (Schatz) show is nose a couple of times. I had to get aggressive to get around those two slower cars. I was able to do that and get some good consistent laps put together.”
Schatz earned his second runner-up finish in a row – third in four races – and fourth top-five finish in a row.
“It’s just the way it goes,” Schatz said. “The car was solid. A solid night. My (Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing) guys have done a great job… We just needed to stay in traffic.”
Schatz’s consistency couldn’t have come at a better time with Sweet’s consistent bad luck. However, Schatz can sympathize with Sweet, knowing how easy it is to go from dominating to struggling.
“There’s only one thing I can control, which is going on with this (TSR) 15 car,” Schatz said. “I can’t control what goes on with anything else. I’ve been in that position before. Things go for you and they go against you. It’s all part of the game.”
Sheldon won the battle against his dad, rounding out the podium – his 15th top-10 finish in a row. Logan Schuchart snuck by Jac in the closing laps to finish fourth and earn the KSE Racing Hard Charger Award – coming from 11th. Jac finished fifth – his first top-five of the season.
With the back half of the 2020 season starting in Pennsylvania next week, the top-five in points are now all within in striking distance of the championship points lead.
1. Brad Sweet --
2. Donny Schatz -2
3. Logan Schuchart -14
4. Carson Macedo -56
5. Sheldon Haudenschild -74

Kyle Larson claims Sharon’s Salute to the Troops Speedweek finale; Aaron Reutzel wins 2020 Ohio Sprint Speedweek championship
BROWNSBURG, Ind. (July 13, 2020) - For the third time during Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires, and for the seventh time in 2020, Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, doing so during Justin Snyder’s Salute to the Troops Speedweek finale at Sharon Speedway on Sunday, July 12. ‘Yung Money’ led the final 21 circuits to claim the $6,000 payday, eventually holding off a late surge by two-time and defending All Star champion, Aaron Reutzel.
Skylar Gee, who started from the pole position after winning the first of two All Star dashes, led the first several circuits of the 30-lap contest before losing command to the familiar No. 57. Hard contact with the outside retaining wall just before the flagstand on lap nine resulted in a flat right-rear tire forcing the Leduc, Alberta, Canada-native to retire, ultimately allowing Larson to inherit the top spot. At the time, Reutzel was battling in the third position, followed by Cory Eliason and Dave Blaney.
Restarting on the point, Larson shot out of a cannon, driving off on a very narrow cushion with Reutzel and Eliason still in tow. Although a caution on lap 16 would stack the field and keep Larson in clean air and out of traffic longer, Reutzel eventually chipped away at Larson’s near-two second advantage and powered within just a few car lengths, utilizing a wall tap by Larson on lap 27 and a three-wide pack of lappers to his advantage. A last minute slider by Larson on lap 29 to put a lapped car between himself and Reutzel sealed the deal for the Paul Silva-owned entry.
“I hit the wall and kinda got stuck in it, so I figured I was going to get a flat tire or something. I was just trying to stay calm. I guess I lost focus a little bit right there,” Kyle Larson said of his brush with the wall, driver of the Paul Silva-owned/Durst/Lucas Oil/Tarlton and Sons/No. 57 sprint car. “I knew Aaron (Reutzel) was probably running pretty hard behind me. I didn’t know where he was, but I figured he was going to be right there. I felt like I hadn’t made any mistakes up until that point, but you never know where they’re at.
“This place is awesome,” Larson continued. “Especially when it gets glass slick to the fence. I thought I could maybe shortcut three and four, but I wasn’t as good as what Skylar (Gee) was up against the wall. Once I got the lead, I knew I needed to commit up there as long as I didn’t see Aaron poke to my inside. I never really saw his nose other than that restart.
“I really enjoy coming to Ohio and running Ohio Speedweek. A big thanks to all of the fans for coming out and supporting your local dirt track racing.”
Reutzel held on to finish second on Sunday evening, solidifying a first-ever Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires speedweek championship. The overall Speedweek title earned the two-time All Star champion and Clute, Texas-native a $4,000 payday.
“We’ve been consistent, so we’ve definitely accomplished that, but I feel like we need to get back on the winning part. If we keep doing what we are doing, the wins will come. Or if we can get Kyle (Larson) to go away, the wins will come. He’s just unreal.” Aaron Reutzel said, driver of the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports/Fischer Body Shop/Hollywood Coating and Blasting/Folkens Brothers Trucking/No. 87 sprint car. “To watch him run that close to the wall and make contact and keep going is just crazy. I think I needed a caution-free run and additional traffic if I was going to get by Larson. I think I was a little better than he was in those long runs.
“A big thanks to everyone who came out. It was a fun week, but we still have more work to do.”

DUSK TILL DAWN: Logan Schuchart wins eventful Wabash Clash
Shark Racing earns its fifth win of 2020 at Terre Haute Action Track; Donny Schatz makes big gains in the Feature and in points
TERRE HAUTE, IN – July 12, 2020 – The sun was still minutes away from its decent into slumber when the green flag waved to start the Wabash Clash at the Terre Haute Action Track Sunday night.
Polesitter Logan Schuchart launched ahead of the field to maintain the lead for the first lap and then the rest of the night – claiming his fifth win of the season and first at the half-mile track.
However, the night sky painted the backdrop to Schuchart’s win after about an hour of intense racing and excitement.
“It was a test the whole time,” Schuchart said about the 30-lap Feature. “There were so many yellows and reds that it made me think a whole lot every yellow about what the car was doing and whether I was running the right line. You try to look for your guys to give you feedback a little bit. It’s just tough. You never know how far out front you are. We only come here every couple of years, and I think the last time here we finished eighth or something like that. So, big improvement and big testament for our guys.”
Eight cautions, which include two red flags – and an Open Red fuel stop – forced Schuchart to run eight perfect restarts. On each one, he had the likes of 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz, 2013 Series champion Daryn Pittman, 2019 Knoxville Nationals winner David Gravel and last year’s Rookie of the Year Carson Macedo starting alongside and behind him at various times. And on every start, he pulled away from each.
Schuchart rocketed ahead of the field every time the green flag waved and pulled away to about a second lead by the end of the lap.
He first outran Kerry Madsen, who started second, on the initial start of the Feature. Madsen faded, bringing Macedo up into second-place. The Kyle Larson Racing driver was unable to best Schuchart on the two restart attempts he was given.
On Lap 13, a part broke on Macedo’s car, sending him spinning into the front stretch wall. At the same time, reigning champion and current points leader Brad Sweet had a right rear tire go flat. Macedo was running second and Sweet was third.
Their misfortune put Gravel into second and Shane Stewart into third. Schuchart bested both of them on the restart, again pulling away. Stewart also worked his way by Gravel for second. Five laps later, Sweet had another part failure and went hard into the Turn 3 wall. That ended his night, giving him two consecutive DNFs – the first time that’s happened in his career since 2013.
When the race resumed, the field was unable to complete the lap before the red flag was thrown, again, for Ayrton Gennetten flipping in Turn 4 after contact with Kerry Madsen. Gennetten, in just his sixth World of Outlaws Feature, was having an impressive run inside the top-10. Before the accident, he was battling with Madsen and Schatz for a top-five position.
While Schuchart led every lap, Schatz had one of the most impressive performances of the night. He blew an engine in the Drydene Heat Race, forcing him to start last in the 23-car field. Schatz then went from 23rd to 15th in the first two laps and continued to pick off multiple cars on every restart. By Lap 22, he moved past Gravel to take third.
Pittman was Schuchart’s closest competition on a restart with 12 laps to go. For the first time all night, he couldn’t pull away. Pittman kept the Drydene #1S within reach. However, before Pittman could try to dethrone the Shark Racing driver, a caution came out for Jason Sides blowing an engine.
The caution set up a three-lap heavy weight clash between Schuchart, Pittman and Schatz. But for the final time of the evening, with darkness now filling the sky, Schuchart continued his masterclass of restarts and drove away from Pittman and Schatz, leaving them to argue over second. Schatz won the battle – and the KSE Racing Hard Charger Award for the night – forcing Pittman to settle for third.
“We got ourselves qualified well tonight, but the Heat Race went to Hell in a handbag,” Schatz said. “So, that’s just the way it works. We had to dig ourselves out of a hole. It’s a pretty respectable night. We’d like to be a little bit better. We won’t hang our head on it. It’s trying at the moment, but we’ll dig through it. These (Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing) guys are incredible at what they do.”
Schatz – second in points – has cut Sweet’s points lead down from 114 points to now 44 points in the last two races. Schuchart is third, 52 points back now.
His Terre Haute Action Track win marks his 21st career World of Outlaws win and one of the hardest he had to work for.
“It was a guessing game every restart, whether (the best line on the track) was going away or if I didn’t have my wing speed yet,” said Schuchart, of Hanover, PA. “It’s a great race car. Thanks, again, to my guys. We didn’t feel great after the Heat Race and in Qualifying I felt slow and didn’t know what to change. Sometimes it’s harder on these big racetracks. It can feel straight and smooth but you’re just slow. It’s hard to tell what you need to change. We made the right changes and we’re able to get here in Victory Lane.”
