LEARY LANDS TITLE OF INDIANA SPRINT WEEK CHAMP

Haubstadt, Indiana (July 27, 2019).........C.J. Leary's 2019 NOS Energy Drink Indiana Sprint Week championship run was indicative of how his entire USAC AMSOIL National Sprint campaign has unfolded thus far.
An ancient proverb states "Go forth, win races, and the points will follow." Leary is proving that to be untrue - about as untrue as the statement that the quote above is actually an ancient proverb.
Winning Indiana Sprint Week is one of the marquees, one of those items that will stand out on a racer's resume for eternity. What makes it so special is the constant challenge of overcoming adversity throughout the eight-races in ten-day trail, enduring late nights of repairs and maintenance, the camaraderie and, yes, the accomplishment, which makes it all worthwhile.
"This is the crown jewel," Leary exclaimed. "This is the one everyone wants to win. It's the hardest two weeks a racecar driver can have. It's a lot of late nights. My crew and I stayed up 2, 3, 4 o'clock in the morning every night getting the 19AZ prepped and prepared. We got the trophy and that's all I care about."
Leary reeled off top-flight performances night after night throughout ISW, starting from the part of the program that sets the tone, qualifying. Not once did the Greenfield, Ind. driver set overall fast time twice during ISW. Not once did he qualify outside the top-three in his qualifying group on a particular night. Only once did he not transfer through his heat race, at Plymouth, where he proceeded to capture the victory in the semi-feature.
Leary never had to start lower than seventh in any of the events, putting him in position to run at the front by virtue of rolling off the feature ready to compete at a high level. From there, his results were a staggering smattering of consistency in eight starts with a pair of 2nd place finishes at Gas City and Plymouth, three 3rd's at Kokomo, Lawrenceburg and Lincoln Park, a 4th at Bloomington, a 6th at Terre Haute and a 10th the final race at Tri-State that gave him a 12-point cushion over Brady Bacon in the final tally.
Now the owner of 21 consecutive top-ten finishes to begin the 2019 season, ever the perfectionist, Leary is not one to simply rest on his laurels. His strive to become a champ has him refusing to cut any corners or being accepting of an "off-night" every now and then. All that means in his book is a missed opportunity to gain points toward a title whether it's Eastern Storm, Indiana Sprint Week of even the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car title on the line.
"I knew that if we ran on the podium every night, we'd have a good shot at winning the deal," Leary acknowledged. "We started off strong and did everything we could every night. We qualified well, we ran well in the heat races and we've only run one B-Main all year. That's a good accomplishment on its own, but I really wanted to win. What we're here to do is win races and we didn't get it done this week, so we'll have to do a little more homework and if we can get this thing to victory lane, we'll be a bit happier."
Leary's ISW title run began in heartbreaking fashion, leading the first 29 laps of the opening night feature at Gas City before winding up as the runner-up finisher behind Shane Cottle in one of the closest finishes in series history. A moment was given to vent, then it was onward to Plymouth where they'd rebound nicely with another second-place run.
Far from the finish line, but more than halfway there, this year has already proven to be a dream season for Leary and Reinbold/Underwood Motorsports. It's a combination that didn't even exist until just a handful of months ago, combining an emerging gasser from the Hoosier state with an Arizona-based team who had never competed on the full USAC National trail.
"The first time I talked to (car owner) Andy (Reinbold) was last November at the Oval Nationals (in Perris, Calif.)," Leary recalled. The next weekend, I was sitting on the beach in Ventura, Calif. waiting for Turkey Night to roll around. Andy gave me a ring and said he was interested in putting something together for the 2019 sprint car season. We got everything worked out to where we were happy. I got to bring Davy Jones along with me with me, which I think is where a lot of my success comes from, getting to bring my crew chief from last year on board. We just mesh so well together, and we have fun on and off the racetrack."
With a pair of "mini" series championships in his bank for 2019, Leary's next step is to capture a USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car title, which is much in the realm of possibility as he continues to knock down top-rate finishes, which is continuously adding to a 122-point lead.
"(Car owner) Andy (Reinbold) assembled a championship winning team and that's what we set out to do," Leary stated. "We won Eastern Storm and we won Indiana Sprint Week. I feel whoever can win one, if not both, ends up winning the championship. I feel pretty confident rolling into the rest of the year with our championship hopes."
History has proven Leary correct in recent years. All three drivers who've won Eastern Storm and Indiana Sprint Week in the same season have gone on to win the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car title that year.
From start to finish at Eastern Storm, Leary bumped his National point lead from 32 to 59, and during Indiana Sprint Week from 57 to 122. They say ISW can make or break a team, but Leary and Reinbold/Underwood Motorsports, by all indications, are making it. Car and driver swaps have taken place in some pit areas over the past week, but this combo keeps digging their way to joining that exclusive crew of Clauson, Ballou and Windom with their methodical manner of knocking out top-fives on a near-nightly basis, and keeping it within the top-ten on an "off" night.
If an off-night and a season-worst finish by the end of July is only a 10th with already two titles under their belt, this season is shaping up to be magical for Leary and company.

20/20 at the Grove: Donny Schatz earns 20th Williams Grove victory, $20K payday
Schatz leads Outlaws top-five to claim his seventh win of the season
MECHANICSBURG, PA – July 27, 2019 – Closing in on 300 wins in his World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series career, the feeling of celebrating in Victory Lane is never lost on Donny Schatz.
However, it was starting to feel that way at Williams Grove Speedway.
The 19-time winner at the speedway had not found victory there since May of 2015. He came close to securing his 20th win several times, including earlier in the year when he finished second to Lance Dewease and Friday night’s Summer Nationals opener where he finished third.
Both times, parked on the front stretch with the rest of the podium cars, he could see Victory Lane. See the confetti shooting into the sky. And see the trophy being delivered to someone other than him.
That changed Saturday night. In the seat of his Toco Warranty No. 15 car, Schatz was pushed past where the third-place car would sit, past the runner-up spot and into Victory Lane at Williams Grove for the 20th time, claiming the Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals and the $20,000 payday attached to it.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve been standing out here getting the trophy and the flag,” Schatz said. “Hats off to this whole Tony Stewart Racing team. They’ve been digging.”
The reigning champion from Fargo, N.D. was fast all night, but never showed a dominate hand. He qualified fourth. Then won his Drydene Heat race and went on to finished third in the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash to winner Sheldon Haudenschild and runner-up Brad Sweet.
Neither Sweet or Haudenschild had ever won a World of Outlaws Feature at Williams Grove Speedway. Experience was on the 10-time Series champion’s side.
When the race went green, Sweet launched to the lead ahead of Haudenschild, but before the action went any further the red flag was thrown for Shane Stewart, who flipped down the front stretch. Stewart’s crew, along with help from others, got the car repaired in time for him to reenter the race before it went back green.
Once it did, Sweet, again, charged into turn one looking to take the lead from Haudenschild, but the young Wooster, Ohio driver was ready for Sweet this time. Haudenschild stayed side-by-side with the NAPA Auto Parts No. 49 car into turn one but got crossed up at the center of the turn, allowing Sweet to charge by the NOS Energy Drink No. 17 car.
The next corner, Schatz dove underneath Haudenschild and cleared him off turn four to take second-place. A few laps later Haudenschild powered to the inside of Schatz entering turn one, but the veteran driver had the better run on the high side of the track. He kept Haudenschild at bay and began his trek toward Sweet.
The Kasey Kahne Racing driver had already pulled away to about a four-car length lead, while riding the high side. Schatz chose the same line. It began to work in his favor.
Seven laps into the 30-lap Feature, with lap cars in sight, Schatz closed to Sweet’s bumper. A lap later, running the middle of the track, Schatz was able to hammer the throttle quicker than Sweet off turn two and sped by him down the back stretch for the lead.
Sweet wasn’t ready to let a Williams Grove victory and $20,000 slip through his fingers, though. He threw a daring slide job at Schatz through turns three and four, leaving inches between their bumper when he slid in front of him exiting turn four.
He couldn’t keep the momentum going off the corner, though. Schatz powered back underneath Sweet down the front stretch, and using a lap car as a pick, drove by him for the lead into turn one. Not long after, Haudenschild worked his way around Sweet for second, as well.
“Felt like I didn’t drive a great race in lap traffic there,” Sweet said. “Just needed to do a little bit better of a job. That’s what wins or loses these races. You’ve got to move around and get by the lap cars.”
The battle was now between Schatz and Haudenschild. Schatz raced around the bottom line, while Haudenschild powered around the outside. That put him at Schatz’s bumper with 10 laps to go.
The same scenario occurred at Cedar Lake Speedway, where Schatz rode the bottom and Haudenschild rocketed around the high side of the track and passed the Series champion for the win.
This time, though, Schatz did what he failed to do at Cedar Lake. He moved his line to the high side of turns one and two, stopping any large run by Haudenschild around the top. Doing so also gave him a good enough run off the corner to extend his lead over Haudenschild.
“Trying to figure out how to pass here is big,” Haudenschild said. “I followed Donny around there for a lot of laps. He don’t make any mistakes. He’s difficult to get around.”
Haudenschild attempted a slide job into turn one to close back on Schatz, but it back fired. He slid up the track and lost grip off the corner, allowing Schatz to further pull away and cruise to the win.
“I had to move around the race track,” Schatz said. “There were laps where I felt like I could roll the bottom and the middle better, and laps where I felt like I had to hustle the top.
"Sheldon is really good when it comes to the cushion like that. It’s tricky. And he’s only getting better. The bad part is he’s way young. There’s going to come a time when he’s going to make me obsolete. But not today.”
Behind Schatz, Haudenschild finished second with Sweet third, Daryn Pittman fourth and David Gravel fifth – shutting out the PA Posse from the top-five at the Mechanicsburg, Pa. track.
With Sweet finishing third, Schatz also closed the points gap between them to eight points.
The Summer Nationals win was Schatz’s seventh Series victory of the year and 290th career win overall.
Victory Lane at Williams Grove Speedway was no longer a distant vision. He saw the confetti and saw the trophy being handed to him once again.
“It’s been a long time since standing here (in Victory Lane at Williams Grove Speedway), but I remember what it feels like now,” Schatz said.

FREMONT, Ohio - DJ Foos drove his Burmeister Racing 410 sprint into the lead with 12 laps to go and pulled away for the win with the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series Presented by the Baumann Auto Group Saturday, July 27 at Fremont Speedway.
Foos, a former 305 Fremont track champion, scored his second win of the year at "The Track That Action Built" on Baumann Auto Group Night, taking home $4,200 thanks to Spanky's Pizza of Carey, the Baumann Auto Group and A Plus Auto Center of Fostoria. Foos dominated on the tricky track, winning by over 2.5 seconds for his 13th career victory at the track.
Foos' win in the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint division also will tighten up the AFCS points significantly with just two point races left for the $10,000 championship. Foos came into the night third in the AFCS standings. Leader Buddy Kofoid came back from an opening lap tangle to score a 7th place finish while Cap Henry, who started the night second in the standings, finished fourth.
"Hats off to these guys (speedway committee) for trying to do stuff...we all didn't become good race car drivers and crew chiefs over night. We have to bare with them and give them some time. This race track is really not my deal. I could do turns one and two all day but three and four...whew...that thing was a hand full. Mikey (Sommers) had the car pretty good and I can't thank everyone enough who stands behind me," said Foos beside his Jet Express/CR Juices/Crown Battery/Greer Automotive/Burmeister Trophy/KS Sales & Service/Kistler Engines/Kistler Racing Products/NAPA Auto Parts/Dave Story Equipment/Minor Customs backed #16.
A tremendous three car battle involving John Ivy, Paul Weaver and Tyler Street dominated the first half of the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints. Weaver, a former track champion, took the lead on lap nine and held off Street at the checkers for his second win of the season at Fremont worth $1,200 thanks to the Baumann Auto Group and A Plus Auto Center.
Weaver's 49th career win at the track, also tightens up the standings in the KS Sales and Service AFCS Presented Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales with two point races remaining. Weaver came into the night third in the standings with leader Jamie Miller finishing seventh and runner-up John Ivy finishing fourth.
"I got old reliable back out. Last couple of weeks I had some bad luck going on," said Weaver referring to a chassis change. "I didn't have any good set-up for this type of track but my engine builder had some pixie dust he sprinkled on it and it worked. I want to thank my wife, Daryl Schiets, Pam and Steve Brown, M&L Excavating, Dave Rice and Bob Hampshire, Miller Rigging and Adkins Motorsports."
The 20 lap feature for the Burmeister Trophy Dirt Trucks featured three wide racing around the speedway for the lead for the first half involving Keith Sorg, Kent Brewer and Shawn Valenti. Valenti took the lead by a bumper on lap seven but Brewer and Sorg battled him hard over the next hand full of laps. Valenti and Brewer then raced side by side for several laps until Valenti was able to pull away slightly until the last lap when Brewer mounted a last ditch challenge that fell just short. Valenti scored his third win of the season and 49th of his career to tie Weaver for seventh on the track's all-time win list.
"That was a hell of a race. Kent and Keith raced clean and hard and that's what it's all about. It was $1,100 to win to night to I had to get up on the wheel. Thanks to the Baumann Auto Group and all they do for us racers and my sponsor A Plus Auto Center for putting extra money in the purse for all the divisions tonight," Valenti said.
"I have to thank the Babcocks for everything they have done for me throughout my whole career and Craig Miller Trucking and Speedway's Bar and Grill, Gressman Powersports, Best Performance Motorsports," added Valenti.
Brian Lay and Lee Jacobs brought the field to green for the 30-lap 410 sprint feature. The second row of Buddy Kofoid and Travis Philo made contact and Kofoid spun in front of the pack, collecting Craig Mintz, Stuart Brubaker and Nate Dussel with Mintz and Brubaker flipping. Everyone was okay but Mintz and Brubaker were done for the night. Kofoid and Dussel made repairs and rejoined at the tail.
When the green flew again Jacobs bolted into the lead over Lay, Foos, Philo, Cale Conley, Ricky Peterson, Caleb Griffith, Cap Henry and Jack Haudenschild. Haudenschild spun with two laps scored and two laps later jumped the big cushion in turn four to end his night.
Jacobs pulled away from Lay on the restart with 26 laps to go with Foos, Peterson, Philo, Conley and Henry in tow. Foos took second on lap 10 just before Conley stopped two circuits later after battling with Philo and Henry for fifth. This time on the restart Foos stayed glued to Jacobs' rear bumper while Lay, Henry and Peterson battled for third.
Foos was able to drive around Jacobs into the lead with a daring move on the tricky turn four cushion on lap 18. With 10 laps to go Foos had opened a second and half lead over Jacobs while Lay and Henry were entertaining the crowed in their quest for third.
Foos hit his marks and drove away to the win as Lay got around Jacobs on the last lap for second with Henry and Caleb Griffith rounding out the top five.
John Ivy and Jason Keckler paced the field for the 25-lap 305 A-main but Bobby Clark stopped to bring about a complete restart. When the green flew Ivy bolted into the lead with Tyler Street applying pressure with Keckler, Weaver and Chris Verda in tow. Ivy, Street and Weaver traded the top spot all around the speedway and only a caution on lap four slowed the action. Weaver finally took the lead from Ivy on lap nine but Ivy and Street continued to apply pressure.
With 10 laps to go the action ground to a halt when Tyler Gunn stopped on the speedway. On the ensuing restart Street took a look to the outside of Weaver but couldn't complete the pass. The car on the move was 13th starter Steve Rando who charged into third with eight laps to go. Weaver was able to build a 1.4 second lead with five laps remaining but lapped traffic allowed Street to close to within a half second at the white flag.
Coming to the checkers Street made a daring move above the cushion and fell just .3 second short as Weaver earned the win. Rando, Ivy and 12th starter Jimmy McGrath Jr. rounded out the top five.
Only three cautions halted the incredible action in the 20-lap dirt truck main that featured Sorg leading by a bumper the first three laps with Brewer leading lap four, Sorg back in charge on lap five, Brewer back to the point on lap six and Valenti taking over on lap seven. Valenti and Brewer would then put on a masterful battle over the rest of the race.
Brewer made one last ditch shot at the win coming to the checkers but Valenti held him off by half a truck length for the $1,100 win. Sorg, Dustin Keegan and Jim Holcomb rounded out the top five.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, Aug. 3 on Pub 400 Night with the 410 and 305 sprints and dirt trucks. The dirt trucks will also run their rained-out feature from May.

The premier racing facility in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, the Hamlin Speedway, once again showed how to get things done last evening with an exciting show that emphasized the hard work and dedication the Smith Family has placed into the facility. With Mother Nature from the liquid and the heat side playing havoc on the speedway in recent weeks, a big show was planned for this weeekend and cooperation from everyone involved paid huge dividends to the faciity. The tremendous racing season thus far in 2019 and the loyal fan base and talented roster of driving stars who converge at the speedway are appreciative of all of the hard work and determination that goes into preparing an exciting and fun-filled evening of racing. The racing action at the 1/5th mile clay-cushioned facility has been over the top with many outstanding driving personalities carving out their own claim to fame in weekly competition for age groups from 8 to 60 plus. Last night some new winners graced victory circle and the fans were very appreciative if the racing action the drivers put on and the show of shows down on the speedway grounds. The racing was completed by 11:00 in the evening.
The 2019 season is eleven weeks old and many special events have been already been completed but the heart of the racing schedule is right now and the Smith Family worked hard to make it happen. Heading up the headlines for last evening’s show include Aiden Donaldson, who won the Junior Slingshot event in a wire to wire triumph. The Supers returned to action twice and John Gilroy captured the rained out event and Dale Kober blasted to a win in the nitecap. Tony Parlanti and Jacob Eby won the JPA Masonry Rookie Wingless events. "Bad" Chad Sandt won over a very quick field in the JPA Masonry Regular 600 Sprint main event. "Chops" Anthony Chrobak captured the feature in the Stage One division for the Hampton RV & Trailer Sales Stage One Modifieds. "KW Speed" Kevin White captured the NASCAR Crew Challenge event over Ryan Martin at the line in the Stage One Modified shoot-out.
Chad Sandt grabbed the lead at the start of the JPA Masonry event and hustled out to a nice-sized lead over Zack Weisenfluh. Track champion "The Travelin Man" Mick D'Agostino, had problems at the start of the event and dropped back many positions but once he settled he was the fastest car on the speedway. Going topside, he quickly became the pursuer and made some nice quality moves to get himself back up front. Sandt was in command all of the way and won the event with Weisenfluh in the runner-up role and D'Agostino rebounding for third place. Colin White hustled to fourth with Joel Smith rounding out the top five. The second five showed Joseph Smith, Stephen Weirich, Tyler Lindsay,Joey Amantea and Brett Altemose .
In the Super Slinger action, Dale Kober ran away and hid to go on and claim another win at the speedway. Wally Bell would rally late to claim runner-up honors and Mike Bama Williams would finish in the third place. David Guest would finish fourth and solid Paul Ennes would finish in fifth place with Jeremy Hoffman, Doc Lapocki and Derek DeSilva finishing close behind.
In the JPA Masonry Rookie 600 event, Jacob Eby became the holeshot king as with each restart he was able to move back in front of the field. His holeshots proved to be margin of victory in this one. Stephen Weirich was close in second place with Michael Nolf third, Kyle Ferrucci fourth and Richie Maguire hustling to fifth place. Jack Hanna led the second five to the stripe with Brandon Nicholas, Rich Maguire, Cody Powell and Dennis Chamberlain all vying for a portion of the action. Crowd pleaser Carmen Leggio rode out a tough on off of the backstretch wall and walked away from the incident unscathed.
The Amantea Real Estate Junior Slingshot event found Aiden Donaldson keeping the action to the front as he began from the pole and walked aways with the win. Kasey Hufcut took up pursuit and finsihed second while James Hendricks was third, Aidan Elliot fourth and Chase Zimmer rounding out the top five. Birthday girl Charlene Benz hustled up to sixth place at the end with Doug Smith, RJ Sherman, Isabella Van Orden, and Dillon Beadle following.
In the event for the Stage One Modifieds, "Chops" Anthony Chrobak outhustled Joel Price at the start and left the field in his wake as he went on to capture the event, his first win ever at the speedway. Adam Buchel hustled hard to finish second while Michael Samony, Tanner VanDohren and Joel Price completed the top five. Jeff Hineline was sixth with Amanda Buchel, Evan Civick, John Bachetti ninth and James Costlow completing the top ten places.
In the All Star Slingshot 100-lap encounter, pole sitter Jared Silfee blasted into the lead at the start of the event and held off all of the competition for the win. His teammate Dale Kober was the runner-up with Shelby McLaughlin third, Cody Kline fourth and Mike McLaughlin in for fifth place. Wes Hearn continued his steady work for sixth place, with Amber Baccaligni, Wally Bell, Andrew Turpin, rounding out the top ten. Paul Ennes was eleventh with Joey Kalafut, ADam Buchel, Richie VanOrden and Ashley Kober rounding out the top fifteen in the 25-car starting field.
With the All Star Slingshot involved with their own brand of excitement, The NASCAR Crew Challenge had cars of the Stage One design for their time on the track. And what a Show! Ryan Martin led all of the way until the checkered flag and then Kevin White stuck the nose of his race car in front of Martin to grab up the win. Todd Carmichael was third while David Cropps raced to fourth place and Steve Channing was fifth and Blake Harris was sixth.
The Supers in catching up with their season had John Gilroy showing the field what it was all about as he sped to a win in the encounter. Dale Kober was second in this one with Wes Hearn third, Paul Ennes fourth and Wally Bell nailing down fifth place.
The rookies did some catching up as well with Tony Parlanti coming in for the win over Michael Nolf. Leggio was third in this one while Brandon Nicholas was fourth and Cody Powell nailed down fifth place.
Pearl Jams:
The track was racy from start to finish and Track Promoter Randy Smith continued to work on the speedway as necessary for the activity on the speedway was non-stop but very racy throughout. Smith had a great track ready for all of the racing teams
Rich VanOrden, Jared Silfee and Wes Hearn cpatured the heat wins for the All Star Slingshots in the first round while Dale Kober, Ashley Kober and Wally Bell captured the heat wins in the All Star Slingshots last evening in the second round. The Junior Slingshot heats went to Aiden Elliot and Kasey Hufcut. The Stage One Modified heat found Adam Buchel being victorious. JPA Masonry Wingless heats were claimed by Colin White and Joe Smith. Dale Kober captured the heat win for the Supers. The JPA Masonry Rookie 600 Sprints did time and Tony Parlanti was quick man with a 12.483 time besting Jacob Eby who clocked a 12.517.
Announcer Steve Pados was kept busy throughout the evening with the Hungarian Auction taking place at trackside and lots of great prizes to give away. Danny Buccafusca took his turn at the mike during the evening events. Clayton Hughes helped in the tower to spot the cars during the NASCAR portion of the event.
Charlene Benz turned 13 years of age with last night's racing action. Happy Birthday from your crew and the speedway.
The Annual Vet Stock raffle tickets were up for sale with the first place prize of the Custom American/Checkered Flag being won by Barbara Johnston. The second place prize of the Ruger 22 Caliber Rifle was won by Art Branson and a third place prize of $500.00 went to Steve Hufcut who went and donated back $200.00 to the Vet Stock Team in a great humanitarian gesture.

Haubstadt, Indiana (July 27, 2019).........In a year's time, Kyle Cummins and crew have come along way. In last year's NOS Energy Sprint Week, the Princeton, Ind. driver qualified for only four of the seven features and finished in the top-ten just once.
In 2019, the storyline was redemption with Cummins qualifying for all eight features, finishing in the top-ten in seven and in contention night-after-night, finishing with a flourish after a victory Thursday at Lincoln Park, a near win Friday at Bloomington and closing out the week-plus series with a triumph in Saturday's ISW finale at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.
At Tri-State, Cummins trailed for 26 laps, working his way from the fifth starting spot to track down race-long leader Stephen Schnapf in traffic with four laps remaining to snare the win, the fourth of his ISW career and fifth ever in USAC's AMSOIL National Sprint Car division, one which was worth savoring every second.
"Two in one week feels pretty good," Cummins exclaimed. "I don't know if it's really sunk in yet. I took my helmet off and drove around there one time and watched everyone yell and scream. I just tried to take it in a little bit more than just one and done. To keep winning USAC races, that's what means something to me. When you win one or two, okay. If you keep winning them, it proves you can run with them."
Cummins came into the night's event literally unbeatable at the quarter-mile dirt paperclip with three victories in three tries thus far in 2019. He started fifth, but the initial green had was put on hold following multiple opening lap stackups, first between turns three and four involving Kevin Thomas, Jr., Donny Brackett, Carson Short and Kent Schmidt. On the next try, a melee ensued in the first turn involving Short, Schmidt, Tony DiMattia and Critter Malone.
The third try was the charm as Schnapf, making just his ninth career USAC start, shot to the lead from the outside of the front row, occupying the middle line as he passed pole sitter and west coast star Brody Roa into turn one. Meanwhile, Chase Stockon, a 2016 Tri-State USAC winner, slid under Roa for second in turn four on the opening lap.
By the tenth lap, Schnapf was already working in traffic while, in the distance 2.2 seconds behind him, Cummins utilized the low line to sprint past Stockon for second. Schnapf, a one-time MSCS winner at Tri-State in 2018, was seeking his first USAC win, but now had one of the all-time masters of the southwestern Indiana track sizing him up.
As the race crossed the halfway point, the interval between Schnapf and Cummins dropped from 1.4 sec. on lap 18 to 1.0 on lap 19 and to less than nine tenths with ten laps remaining. Once clearing the lapped car of Malone with seven to go, Cummins' runway was cleared for takeoff.
When Schnapf raced underneath the lapped car of Isaac Chapple in turns three and four with seven laps to go, Cummins was a mere single car length behind. Schnapf maintained the advantage for another full lap until, with just five laps remaining, Cummins gained ground off the bottom of turn two, sticking with Schnapf around turns three and four and missing out on the lead at the stripe by less than a wheel.
The two ran side-by-side, just feet apart for three-quarters of the following lap with four to go, with Cummins using his veteran savviness to slide off the bottom in front of Schnapf off the fourth corner to possess the lead at the line by a single car length.
Massive traffic lie ahead, but Cummins navigated through the gridlock with relative ease, sticking the bottom to roll past both Tyler Courtney and C.J. Leary with two laps remaining, lapping up to tenth, as he pulled away from Schnapf, ultimately winning by a 1.604 margin over Schnapf, Justin Grant, Stockon and KSE Racing Products/B & W Auto Mart Hard Charger Brady Bacon, rounding out the top-five after starting 15th.
Cummins and Rock Steady Racing clicked at the right time during Indiana Sprint Week. The team was able to adjust and adapt when any situation arose, such as when they discovered they had a broken shock from the first four races of ISW. They were already tough at that point but took it to another level in the second half of the week, putting themselves into contention to win in each of the last three nights, culminating with a victory that may have just outdone his most recent.
"Winning Putnamville was big," Cummins explained. "I thought it was the biggest until this one tonight, being able to run (Schnapf) down and pass him without a yellow. He's a buddy of mine and I won one already, so I was thinking I'm actually going to be happy for him if he wins. The last ten laps, I just had to take it up a notch and make sure I hit every mark."
Saturday's victory was the fourth of Kyle Cummins' NOS Energy Drink Indiana Sprint Week career and his fifth in USAC's AMSOIL National Sprint Car division.

Saturday at Tri-State, the team ran a different set up than they had all year, and the same situation was at hand at Putnamville during Thursday's victory. The team is in sync and their Midas touch has car and driver's cohesiveness working like clockwork.
"When you have a bad car, you cannot be aggressive," Cummins pointed out. "When you get a good car and you can actually run with them, it sticks, and you can make moves. It just picks your confidence up. Right now, the confidence is pretty high.
Although he was a lap down at the finish, Leary's tenth place run was solid enough to earn him another crown jewel on his 2019 USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car campaign just a little more than a month after capturing the Eastern Storm title and in the midst of a USAC title run in which he currently holds a commanding lead.
Always the competitor, Greenfield, Indiana's Leary was kind of perplexed by their results at Tri-State. A consistent ISW performance that saw a pair of 2nd place finishes, three 3rd's, a 4th and a 6th in eight starts sent him into the finale with a 24-point buffer ahead of Bacon, enough to check out of the Hoosier state tour with all the loot and the hardware.
"I think the first seven nights allowed us to have one bad night here," Leary pointed out. "It really wasn't all too terrible, it just wasn't what we'd hoped for. We wanted to cap off the week with a win, but we have the rocking chair, we have the check and we have the trophy. Everybody's happy!"

Gio Scelzi dominates All Star visit to Knoxville Raceway and becomes youngest 410 winner in track history
KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 27, 2019) - Fresno, California’s Gio Scelzi put on a head-turning performance Saturday night at the famed Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, ending his visit not only as an Ollie's Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, the first of his career, but also permanently etching his name in Knoxville Raceway history books as the youngest 410c.i. sprint car winner in the track’s 118-year history; Gio Scelzi is 17-years-old.
Scelzi, who started second on the feature grid as the result of his respective dash victory, did not take command for the first time until lap 10, utilizing a slider through turns one and two to work underneath the ‘Madman’ Kerry Madsen. Despite periods of intense traffic during the later stages of the main event, all potential roadblocks proved to be no match against Scelzi’s abilities, actually increasing his command to well over four seconds by halfway, eventually capping the 25-lap program by a margin of victory nearing eight seconds.
Kerry Madsen chased Scelzi to the final checkers, followed by Brian Brown, Cory Eliason, and Aaron Reutzel.
“I couldn't pick a better time to do this than right before the Knoxville Nationals,” Gio Scelzi said in Knoxville Raceway victory lane, driver of the Indy Race Parts/No. 71. “This is a dream come true to win here during an All Star race, and we put it to some damn good guys. I owe it all to this team. They work so hard and I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”
A pair of cautions before the field could register a lap were the only disturbances during Saturday’s feature program.
Although Scelzi started from the outside-pole position, it was actually Kerry Madsen who earned the initial jump, leading Scelzi and Brian Brown by the flagstand for the first time with Terry McCarl and Cory Eliason also in tow.
Brown made a move on lap two to take the second position away from Gio Scelzi, next setting aim on the top spot occupied by Kerry Madsen.
Unfortunately for Brown, the five-time Knoxville Raceway winner in 2019 would never get the opportunity to challenge Madsen for the top spot, as Scelzi beat him to the punch by taking over the second position on lap nine, next stealing the top spot from Madsen the following circuit.
From that point forward, it was no contest for Gio Scelzi, extending his advantage lap by lap until crossing under the final checkers with a lead pushing eight seconds.
“I think we’ve been getting better and better every time we’ve been here,” Gio Scelzi continued, whose performance will air on MAVTV Motorsports Network later this fall. “Tonight was a good night. Lapped traffic certainly went my way and I was able to push, push, push. I looked up at the scoreboard and saw that ‘21’ up there and it made me think a slider was coming. This is all just unbelievable.”
Tony Stewart’s All Stars will conclude their four-race trek through the heart of the Midwest with a visit to 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, on Sunday evening, July 28, taking part in the highly anticipated, as well as inaugural, Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race awarding a $26,000 top prize. The Sunday night showstopper boasts a total purse nearing $75,000; $26,000-to-win, $2,000 for tenth and $800-to-start.
