It was around this time ... 56 years ago that I was a young kid working as a draftsman for a major heavy machinery manufacturer in Trenton, NJ. Like most guys of that age I was interested in cars. One day while eating lunch at my desk and reading Hot Rod Magazine, a summer intern engineering student came up to me and said that I should go see real racing on dirt. Well I was a stick and ball fan and watched just about every Yankees game on WPIX Channel 11 TV from NY. I didn’t know anything about racing except watching a few Jalopy (stock car) races from Culver City, California on TV. A few weeks later I was reading the sports section of the Trentonian newspaper and see an ad for USAC Sprint Cars at the Hatfield Speedway. I got out my gas station roadmap (no GPS back then) and found out where this Hatfield PA was and how to get there.
The day of the race came Friday July 26, 1963, after work I went home to change and with map and instructions in hand it was off to see what this was all about. When I found the track , an ambulance was coming out as I was parking my car. I later found out that Jim McElreath crashed into the first turn wall in practice. I got my ticket and saw all of the people in the stands and didn’t know where I should go. The track crew were trying to fix the wall and I saw other people going in the infield so that’s were I went. While walking around in the infield before racing resumed I ran into a guy who worked at the same place that I did He had been a new employee and I didn’t know his name. His name was Bruce Jones who would become a life long friend. He was with another guy named Jack Rule who just happened to be the brother of the engineer student intern at work who told me to go see real racing on dirt. The race drivers were named A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Bobby Marshman, Don Branson, Roger McCluskey, Bob Harkey, Jim Hurtubise, Earl Halaquist, Cotton Farmer, Jim Maguire, Arnie Knepper, Ron Lux, Chuck Hulse, Bud Tinglested, Chuck Yost, Ralph Liguori and others. When the green flag waved to resume practice all I could say to myself was WOW! What the hell have I been missing all of my life. I was hooked for the rest of my life. I became friends with Bruce & Jack. Bruce ran stock cars and I would hang out at the garage. We would go to watch a lot of races, sometimes 5 a week. We would see the best Modified stocks (dirt and asphalt), Midgets and Indy Cars, but nothing could compare with the Sprint Cars. There was just some magic watching them.
What was this force that had a grip on me, let me try to explain. When I first started to go to the races, open cockpit race cars didn’t have cages. When they would crash or go over it was like 50/50 if the driver would be badly hurt or be killed. It was an adrenaline rush watching them do something dangerously crazy. It’s the feeling you have if you were watching a man walking on a high wire 100 ft off the ground with no net and he is having a hard time keeping his balance. The adrenaline rush is because you see before you what can happen if he falls. That adrenaline rush would not be there if the walker was 20 feet off the ground and had a net under him.
It was all of this that branded my soul to love Sprint Cars, no stockcar could duplicate those feelings. Sprint Cars have become 1000% safer over the years, much so that some drivers don’t respect the car, only to be brought back to reality when we lose one of our drivers.
Today’s cars are basically the same cars that ran in the 1960’s. They have fuel injected engines, no transmission (must be pushed to start), quick change rear, 4-bar torsion, quick steering and no flywheel (the engine barks when you punch the gas).They have the newest gadgets but they still look the same on the track. If it’s a winged sprint you couldn’t tell if it was Kenny Weld or Donny Schatz; or wingless if it was A.J. Foyt or Brady Bacon. The cars still look the same way on the track as they did decades ago.
Fast forward to the other night at the Grandview Speedway, part of the 2019 PA Speedweek Series. Standing between the first and second turns taking pictures and watching the 900 plus Horsepower Sprints taking time. They run wide open all the way around, no change in the sound of the motor. If you closed your eyes you couldn’t tell the turns from the straights. After 56 years there is still magic watching the fastest race cars on dirt.

USAC MIDGETS HEAD TO GRANDVIEW, JOIN 358 MODIFIEDS IN NAPA AUTO PARTS THUNDER ON THE HILL EVENT TUESDAY NIGHT, JULY 30
BECHTELSVILLE, PA JULY 16, 2019 . . . . . The stars of USAC will return to the East, this time taking part in the NOS Energy Drink USAC National Midget Series that will open at the Grandview Speedway on Tuesday night, July 30. The USAC Midgets will share the program with the 358 NASCAR Modifieds in the third event of the 2019 NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series. The USAC National Midget event at Grandview will be the Ken Brenn Midget Masters going 30 laps and paying $3,500 to the winner. Gates open at 5 PM with race time set for 7:30 PM.
The Ken Brenn Midget Masters is dedicated to Ken Brenn Sr., a winning Open-Wheel and Dirt-Track Modified Stock-Car Racing car owner for some 30 years (1954-1983) whose accomplishments on the track were accompanied by an unblemished record of integrity and professionalism. And win or lose the resident of Warren, New Jersey, always presented a first-class effort and treated everyone with gentlemanly courtesy and respect.
Brenn’s stellar Midget history shows a long association (1954-1972) with the old American Racing Driver’s Club and that relationship includes holding every office in the organization, including being a two-time (1969-1970) ARDC president. Plus, he was also a five-time ARDC Champion Car Owner (1963-1964, 1968-1969 and 1971) and listed on the ARDC's Honor Roll as a Lifetime Member.
But Brenn – who also did some Midget and Modified Stock-Car promoting – didn’t just race with ARDC as he provided rides for over 150 top drivers who competed in: the Indianapolis 500; USAC Championship Dirt Car, Sprint Car and Midget Racing; NASCAR’s old Midget Division; and, the highly-competitive Pennsylvania-New Jersey and DIRT Motorsports Modified Stock-Car Series.
Brenn was also a leader in making auto racing as safer sport as his efforts in this area saw him: design a universally-accepted roll bar for Midgets in 1958; have the first USAC Sprint Car to ever use a roll cage in 1966; and, be instrumental in making roll cages – and shoulder harnesses – mandatory for ARDC in 1970.
“I consider Ken a close friend, someone I have known for years but further secured our relationship through the Dirt Track Heroes Car Show at the Phillipsburg Mall over the past ten years”, commented Bob Miller who with the Rogers Family, promotes the Thunder on the Hill Racing events. “I remember when Mr. Brenn promoted midget races here at Grandview, he was always very professional, a great asset to the sport”, added Theresa Rogers.
And he continues to be regarded by the racing community as one of its finest representatives.
Christopher Bell, hot off a $10,000 win at Grandview on Tuesday, July 2 in a 410 sprint car is planning to compete in the Ken Brenn Midget Masters 30 along with Tyler “Sunshine” Courtney, Chris Windom, Kevin Thomas, Jr, Zeb Wise, Chad Boat, Tanner Carrick, Jerry Coons Jr. and C.J. Leary just to name a few. Time trials and qualifying events will lead up to the Ken Brenn Midget Masters 30 lap feature event paying $3,500 to the winner.
The 358 Modifieds will play an equally important part of this event with qualifying and a 30 lap feature that will $3,000 to the winner. Jeff Strunk is hot off a Thunder on the Hill victory and he’ll be challenged by Ryan Watt, the winner of the opening Thunder on the Hill modified event in June. Other expected entries include Brett Kressley, Duane Howard, Craig VonDohren, Rick Laubach, Doug Manmiller, Billy Pauch Jr., Kevin Hirthler, Jared Umbenhauer and many more.
The Tuesday night, July 30 Ken Brenn Midget Masters and 358 NASCAR Modified double-header will get underway at 7:30 PM with gates opening at 5 PM. Low, Down & Dirty is already hard at work planning the pre-race Meet and Greet.
Be sure to plan and attend the first return of the USAC National Midgets to Grandview in thirty years.

Tickets may be paid for and picked up on race night at the WILL CALL window after 3:30 PM. Coming up this Saturday, July 20th is another tripleheader show at Grandview Speedway, this time featuring the Capital Renegade United Racing Club Sprints in their first appearance of the season as part of T.P.Trailers and Truck Equipment Night. The Sprint events will be sponsored by Victory Auto Glass with the feature paying $2,000 to win. Heading up the Sprint action will be Josh Weller, Chad Layton, Curt Michael, Austin Bishop, former Grandview Late Model champion Ed Aikin who has a URC feature win this season and a host of other Sprint standouts. As an added attraction URC will be hosting a Legends Reunion in the first turn pavilion area. Legends will be signing autographs and chatting with fans starting at 6 p.m. Included amongst the legends will be Sean Michael, Becca Anderson, Mares Stellfox, Charlie Massey, Greg Coverdale, Fran Hogue, Ed Wylie and host of others.
Just added to the list of Legends is Glenn Fitzcharles who got his racing start at Grandview in the stock cars and went on to win 81 URC features and five titles. The Pottstown, PA resident is enshrined in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame.
The NASCAR 358 Modifieds and Sportsman stock cars will make up the balance of the tripleheader show.
A full series of qualifying events in each division will lead to the main events that will feature the top performers of the night.
At 5 p.m. the Low Down and Dirty Meet & Greet will feature Modified standout Jared Umbenhauer and URC racer Josh Weller at the front admission gate area.
Adult admission for this not to be missed show is $25, youngsters 6 through 11 pay $5 and kids under 6 are admitted free.
With 11 feature races completed in both the Modifieds and Sportsman ten-time track champion Craig Von Dohren sits on top of the Modified standings with 2769 counters. Second spot is held by Duane Howard, a five time champion, with 2590 points. Both Oley, PA residents have earned feature victories with Von Dohren having three and Howard having earned two. Third spot in the standings is held by Hellertown, PA’s Rick Laubach with 2429 tallies and having done it without benefit of a feature win.
Topping the Sportsman is veteran racing talent Brad Brightbill of Sinking Spring, PA. He has three wins, including the Firecracker 40 this past Saturday, and 2196 points. Brad Grim has 2169 points and has done it without a win. Third spot is held by former champion Brian Hirthler with 2124 making for a tight battle for the title. Hirthler has been to victory lane twice this season.
During the 11 events presented this season there have been 56 Modifieds and 41 Sportsman seen in action on the one-third-mile, banked clay oval.

JERESEY RUSH VIII CANCELED AT NEW EGYPT SPEEDWAY TUESDAY, JULY 16, LOW CAR COUNT CITED
NEW EGYPT, NJ July 15, 2019 - After careful consideration and acknowledgement of likely low competitor participation, JERSEY RUSH event promoters Bob Miller, Len Sammons, Danny Sammons and Davey Sammons have been forced to cancel the event at New Egypt Speedway which had been planned for tomorrow night, Tuesday, July 16th. We always want to present the highest quality show and a great amount of effort went into the planning with over sixty sprint car team contacted. This is very disappoint for all involved, including competitors from all divisions who committed to race.
The promoters cited a shortage of anticipated entries of the 410 Sprint Cars as the reason for the postponement. Two prominent JERSEY RUSH Sprint racers who annually compete at the event, former winner Ryan Smith and recent PA Speedweek champion Lucas Wolfe are both sidelined with injuries suffered recently.
Smith, who has not raced since suffering a concussion at Selinsgrove Speedway on June 30th, has yet to be cleared by doctors to return to competition. Wolfe suffered back injuries this past Sunday, July 14 in the All Star Sprint Series race at Lebanon Valley Speedway.
Despite engine problems and crashes that had set back numerous other 410 Sprint teams in recent weeks, the promoters felt they had organized a strong enough field of entries for fans to enjoy the show until this past weekend problems forced other teams to cancel. Similar problems on the Modified side were also reported after a tough weekend for both divisions.
“None of us, me, Len Sammons or his sons Danny and Davey would be comfortable putting on a show with such a short field of cars,” said Bob Miller.
“We recognize the inconvenience a late cancelation may cause for those race teams that were planning to be at JERSEY RUSH and for fans who look forward to the event. But we would rather be up front about what was likely to occur and cancel than trying to put on a show that would not be up to the standard we believe race fans deserve.”
Due to the busy schedule, we will not look for an alternate date in 2019.
We thank the drivers of all divisions who did commit to the show as well as the outpour of interest in the event from race fans.

Brock Zearfoss dominates Lebanon Valley Speedway for second All Star victory of 2019
WEST LEBANON, N.Y. (July 14, 2019) - For the second time in his career, and for the second time in the state of New York, the ‘Jonestown Jet’ Brock Zearfoss is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, doing so by leading all 25 circuits on Sunday night at Lebanon Valley Speedway in West Lebanon, New York, and crossing under the final checkers by a margin of victory pushing three seconds.
Impressive enough, Zearfoss, driver of the Premier Motorsports/Moose’s LZ Bar & Grill/Heavy Equipment, Loaders & Parts Inc./BAPS Auto Paint & Supply/Meckley's Limestone Products/Berkebile Oil Company/River City Wood Products/No. 70 sprint car, nearly swept the entire program at ‘The Valley of Speed,’ first winning his respective heat race, then cruising to a dash victory, each before conquering the half-mile for a $7,000 payday.
Although a dominating performance in Upstate New York, Brock Zearfoss and Premier Motorsports did face a serious challenge; forced to perform an engine change just after heat race competition was completed. As a result, Kevin Zearfoss, Brock’s father, was forced to participate in the evening’s dash redraw while Brock helped his crew swap motors; Kevin pulled the number one.
“I really can’t say enough about this team right now. They work so hard and they never give up. I owe this win all to them,” Brock Zearfoss explained, who is currently fifth in the All Star Circuit of Champions point standings. “All of the pieces fell into place for us tonight and it feels great. There were a few times where I made some mistakes, like trying to get around some of the slower cars. It was tricky trying to figure out where I needed to be to get around them. Regardless, it was a great night and we are excited. I think I need to let my dad do the dash draw for us more often.”
Starting from the pole position, Zearfoss never faced a serious threat. The only real momentum change during the 25-lapper was a pair of stoppages due to red flag incidents, one on lap three and another on lap 16.
In addition, the ‘Jonestown Jet’ did encounter a period of traffic, the catalyst for the second red flag incident involving Aaron Reutzel and Justin Peck; both full-time All Stars who were battling for positions three and four at the time of the incident. Hung up in traffic, the pair made contact in turn four and Reutzel ended his evening upside-down. Peck was also forced to retire. Both drivers were unharmed.
“I really didn’t want to see the red flags open up,” Brock Zearfoss continued. “I knew we had a good car, so I really didn’t think we would change anything anyhow. I just didn’t want anyone to have the opportunity to make changes and gain an advantage. It all worked out in the end.”
Davie Franek ended up chasing Zearfoss to the final checkers, followed by Orange County winner, Danny Dietrich, 2018 Lebanon Valley winner, Gerard McIntyre, and Rudeen Racing’s Cory Eliason.
Tony Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions will take a weekend off before resuming their 2019 campaign on Thursday through Sunday, July 25th-28th. The Series will march through the upper-Midwest during their four-day trek visiting Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wisconsin, Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minnesota, Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, and 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, respectively. The weekend will be headlined with the Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race; a $26,000-to-win blockbuster at 34 Raceway.

COLWELL CASHES IN FOR FIRST MIDGET WIN AT HUMBOLDT
HUMBOLDT, KANS. (July 14, 2019) - Another first-time winner made the trip to victory lane on Sunday night at Humboldt Speedway with Jesse Colwell of Red Bluff, Calif. topping the
POWRi Lucas Oil National / West Midget League feature. Inheriting the lead after Zach Daum flipped on lap 25, Colwell controlled the final five laps and drove the Keith Kunz Motorsports, JBL Audio, Bullet/Toyota No. 71 to his first-career triumph.
Earning PAC Racing Springs High Point Man honors with a fifth-to-second heat race, Zach Daum of Pocahontas, Ill. paced the field aboard his Daum Motorsports, Bullet/Toyota No. 5D. Jonathan Beason of Broken Arrow, Okla. was slated to start on his outside, but trouble during the pace laps sent him to the work area and back to the tail, giving Blake Edwards of Claremore, Okla. the outside pole.
The initial green flag was short lived as a lap one caution involving Luke Howard, Devin Simmons, Cannon McIntosh and Holley Hollan, sent McIntosh and Hollan to the work area, with only Hollan returning to the track.
Driving away from the field, Daum immediately began to distance himself as a long-run was established. Building a 3-second lead by lap ten, Daum grew his advantage further as he galloped into lap traffic near the halfway mark. While Daum was checked out in front, both Hollan and Beason were crafting stellar charges into the top ten from the rear, and Jesse Colwell and Jake Neuman began tracking down Daison Pursley for the second spot.
Hitting the ten to go mark, Daum continued to stretch his lead while the battle for second heated up, as Colwell and Pursley went slider-for-slider with the runner-up position up for grabs. After swapping the spot back-and-forth for almost four laps, Colwell assumed the advantage and moved into second just before catastrophe struck.
Running away in lap traffic with five to go, tragedy struck for Zach Daum in a big way. Hauling down the front stretch, his Toyota Racing powerplant suddenly locked-up and shot the No. 5D dead right into the wall. What ensued was a violent series of end-over-end flips before he came to a rest at the entry to turn one. The scary moment concluded when a flame emerged and his machine caught on fire, but Daum was able to escape the wreckage and quickly climbed out of the car under his own power to the roar of the thankful crowd.
Inheriting the race lead following Daum's rough misfortune, Colwell led the field back to green and controlled the final restart with ease. The Red Bluff, Calif. native pulled away to lead the last five laps and earn his first-career POWRi Lucas Oil National / West Midget League victory aboard the Keith Kunz Motorsports, JBL Audio, Bullet/Toyota No. 71.
Following Colwell to the line and earning his own career-best finish was 14-year old Daison Pursley of Locust Grove, Okla. with a second-place finish in the Keith Kunz Motorsports, Toyota Racing No. 9. Rounding out the podium with a strong 12th-to-third charge was Jake Neuman of New Berlin, Ill. in the Jim Neuman Racing, BRANDT, BOSS/SR-11 No. 3N.
Closing out the top five was Jonathan Beason with a magnificent recovery to finish fourth after going tail back, and Holley Hollan scoring fifth with her own impressive rebound after heading to the rear of the field. Behind them was Andrew Felker in sixth, Ace McCarthy in seventh, Trey Marcham in eighth, Chance Morton in ninth and Luke Howard in tenth.
The POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League will enjoy some downtime next weekend before coming back to life on Friday, July 26 at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill. and Saturday, July 27 at Macon Speedway in Macon, Ill.
