IT'S SWEET, SWEET SPRINGS VICTORY FOR CARRICK

Sweet Springs, Missouri (July 14, 2019).........Most times, it seems the only thing predictable in USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget racing is unpredictability. And sometimes when you think you know what's about to transpire, that's when everything turns on its head. At times, literally.
Lincoln, California's Tanner Carrick found that out in Sunday's trip to Missouri's Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex where he became the fourth first-time series winner this year, following Cannon McIntosh, Chris Windom and Jason McDougal. It's the first time the series has produced four first-time winners in a single season since 2008, and it's still only mid-July.
Carrick ran fifth with five laps remaining as point leader and race leader Tyler Courtney and defending champ Logan Seavey waged their battle for the lead. Seavey mustered a big, bold slider for the lead entering turn three. Courtney quickly countered underneath to steal the spot back from Seavey off turn four.
Seavey remained just about three car-lengths back on the following lap until his car got a bit tight on the cushion in between turns three and four, allowing Courtney to open up a roughly eight car-length lead despite catching the lapped car of Brady Bacon in traffic as he worked turns one and two.
Traffic parted the seas for Courtney with a free path on the high side entering turn three. With seemingly everything in check, Courtney snagged the turn three cushion, flipping him over. On Courtney's rebound, second-running Logan Seavey clipped his own right front wheel against Courtney's tail tank, giving terminal damage to Seavey's car and eliminating him from a repeat Sweet Springs victory. Courtney restarted, albeit from the tail and out of contention for his seventh series win of the year.
That slotted Carrick into third on the final restart behind McDougal and Windom. Throughout much of the duration of the 40-lapper, Carrick had been waging in a see-saw slider session behind Courtney and Seavey, battling the likes of McDougal, Windom and Kevin Thomas, Jr., just to name a few, for what, at the time, seemed to be for "best in class" for third as the front two checked out.
On the lap 38 restart, McDougal went topside as Windom headed to the bottom to toss a slider at McDougal. Windom appeared to not have enough mustard on the slide to get up in front of McDougal but was content to fall in line and chase him into the next corner. Before all that could even play out, McDougal's right rear snagged the turn two cushion, turning him to the right and pushing him into the outside wall.
Windom ducked under McDougal to take the lead momentarily heading down the back straightaway. Yet, even lower on the track was Carrick, who used the bottom to pull ahead of Windom at the entrance to turn three. Carrick slid up in front of Windom to the top, while Windom charged to the bottom as Carrick nipped Windom at the stripe by three-quarters of a car length.
"I just wanted to be there at the end," Seavey said. "I saved my stuff. I kind of figured (Windom) was going to try to slide McDougal (on the restart). My only odds were rolling the bottom on the last restart and getting to the lead. and it worked out."
Carrick was on a mission to take away Windom's line and prevent the slider into the first turn as he dove across the nose of Windom to secure the bottom before sliding up to the top in turn two as Windom had the front left wheel kicking up a little dust on the inner berm.
Carrick was meticulous in sliding himself into each corner from bottom to top, leaving Windom and hard-charging Zeb Wise a narrow window of opportunity that Carrick had no intentions of relinquishing.
Carrick, the 2017 series Rookie of the Year in his 54th career start, finished it out with authority for his first career series win. Wise, who returned from an opening lap flip, rode the rim around Windom on the final lap to take second by two car-lengths over Windom, while McDougal fell to fourth and Chad Boat rounded out the top-five after starting 15th.

Carrick and his Keith Kunz-Curb-Agajanian/Craftsman - CVC Concrete/Bullet by Spike/Speedway Toyota had been fast of late, entering Sunday night's triumph. Just two weeks ago, Carrick drove to a career-best-equaling third-place result in Joliet, Ill. after establishing a new eight-lap track record during the heat race. He set a new 10-lap track record Friday's heat in Fairbury, Neb., followed by a 7th place feature finish Saturday at Fairbury. The speed has been there, but the results they've been striving for these past three years finally came to fruition.
"It means a lot to me getting a win for (crew members) Big Al (Scroggins), for Ronnie (Gardner), for Keith Kunz, everyone that helps out on the team. We've been really close. I've been really close lately. I could say there's numerous races I should've won but didn't play out my way, but this one did."
Despite the dramatic finish, the feature arrived with inauspicious beginnings initially. The first of two red flags came out on lap one as front row starters Seavey and Andrew Layser banged wheels on the back straightaway, creating a chain reaction of events entering the third turn.
As Layser fought to regain control, McDougal slowed to avoid Layser. In turn, sixth-starting Tanner Thorson ramped over McDougal's left side wheels and flipped. Wise, who started 9th, plowed in and hit Thorson, sending himself flipping as well. Ethan Mitchell was also collected in the mishap. Thorson did not restart and, ultimately, finished 23rd.
Curtis Spicer flipped in turn two on the second lap. Spicer's car went off on the hook and he was finished for the night, taking a 22nd place finish.
Meanwhile, with 25 cars passed throughout the four nights of "Mid-America Midget Week," Jerry Coons, Jr. collected the ProSource Passing Master Award. The two-time series champ started 16th and finished 7th Sunday at Sweet Springs.

FREMONT, Ohio - Cap Henry knows the ups and downs of sprint car racing. It was made very evident to him this weekend as he missed the feature Friday at Attica Raceway Park but rebounded Saturday to score his second 410 win of the season at Fremont Speedway on Roots Poultry/Fort Ball Pizza Palace Night.
The win also vaults Henry back into the battle for the championship of the Kistler Racing Products/All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads Attica Fremont Championship Series (AFCS) Presented by the Baumann Auto Group. Henry, from Republic, Ohio, came into the night third in the series points.
Henry's eighth career Fremont win wasn't easy as he made a phenomenal move to split two lapped cars with two laps to go in turns three and four as Nate Dussel was closing on him.
"These guys have been working really hard all year and we've been close a lot of times and just couldn't seal the deal. This goes out to all the crew guys who worked really hard to keep us out front. It was getting pretty hairy there at the end and I knew it was time to go. Hopefully those guys new they were a lapped down and there was a race going on. I could hear someone back there and I knew I had to get ahead of those guys," said Henry beside his Lane Racing/Beer Barrel Bourbon/Geck Electric/Pro Auto Wraps/Wings Unlimited/Lead Head Waterfowl/FK Rod Ends/backed machine.
Pleasant Hill, Ohio's Matt Westfall survived near disaster on the final lap to score his second Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series (BOSS) non-wing win of the season. Westfall, the current BOSS point leader, hadn't won a series race since the first event of the season. The end was a thriller as Westfall had gotten around Dallas Hewitt for the lead as they took the white flag with Cooper Clouse also battling for the top spot. Clouse drive his machine into turn one hard on the last lap and made contact with Westfall who did a 360 spin but kept going while Clouse spun to set up a one lap restart finish with Westfall maintaining the lead. Westfall was able to hold off a last lap charge from Hewitt in his Buckeye Machine mount for his first ever win at Fremont Speedway.
"I just held it to the floor and kept spinning the wheels to keep rolling. It was tricky tonight. The track had a lot of character. I thought I was going to have to run the top and all of a sudden the bottom came in for me and we were good but Dallas got going on the top so I thought I'm better than him on the bottom in one and two but I have to get to the top down in three and four. That was a heck of a race. I appreciate Ray Marshall for giving me the opportunity to run for him," said Westfall. "We struggled for a little bit this season and crashed a car and got this new car and have been really good but haven't been able to hit our feature set-ups. Hopefully tonight this gets us going in the right direction."
Not to be outdone, the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints was also a barn-burner. With five laps to go leader Alvin Roepke was having a hard time getting around a couple of lapped cars and that allowed John Ivy to close. Roepke spun trying to hold onto the lead and Ivy took over. A caution with four laps to go gave Bobby Clark a shot at Ivy but the defending Fremont track champion wasn't to be denied as he drove to his second victory of the year at "The Track That Action Built."
The win - Ivy's fourth overall in 2019 - was his 58th career victory at Fremont, tying him with Jim Linder for fourth on the track's all-time win list. It also puts him back in the chase for the title of the KS Sales and Service AFCS presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales. Ivy came into the night third in the series points and the victory was worth $1,000 thanks to the Pub 400.
"I figured we were going to run second or third. Alvin was driving away from us and I saw lapped traffic and I thought 'get up on the thing and at least give it a whirl and see what happens.' We did some work on this thing today. Guy and my brother and the boys worked on it. We did a little bit of this and a little bit of that and hopefully we're in the right direction again," said Ivy beside his L&R Farms/C&N Supply/Rohr Lawn care/Sonny's Welding and Machine/Welty Financial Services/Atkinson Farms/Story Equipment backed machine.
"Pretty cool to tie Jim Linder. He was always one of my heroes," Ivy added of his 58th career Fremont win, needing two more to catch Mark Keegan for third on the all-time win list. "Me and Mark raced back in the day and I got to race with Jim just a few times but I sat up in the grandstands and watched him a lot."
Australian Andrew Scheuerle and Brian Lay led the field to green for the 30-lap Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints A-main with Scheuerle gaining the advantage over Henry, Lay, Dussel, Chris Andrews and Lee Jacobs.Chad Wilson stopped with three laps scored and on the ensuing restart Henry drove under Scheuerle for the lead.
Dussel took second on lap six and began to close on Henry. Meanwhile a heck of a battle was going on for fifth involving Andrews, Jacobs and Buddy Kofoid. Kofoid spun on lap 10 just as the leaders were entering lapped traffic. When the green came back out the race would go to it's conclusion uninterrupted. Lay drove into third on the restart with Jacobs also getting around Scheuerle for fourth.
At the half-way point Henry had built a 1.1 second lead over Dussel with Lay, Andrews, Jacobs and Cale Conley in tow. Henry's lead soon evaporated with 10 laps to go as he encountered heavy lapped traffic. Dussel took several looks inside of Henry as the pair raced through traffic. Lay got in on the fun with six laps to go.
Henry made his winning move in turn three coming with just five laps remaining, splitting two lapped cars. He was able to drive to the win over Dussel, Lay, Andrews and Conley.
Westfall and Carmen Perigo brought the field to green for the 25-lap BOSS feature with Perigo gaining the advantage over Cap Henry, Westfall, Clouse and Cody Gardner. Mike Miller spun with two laps scored and again a lap later.When the green reappeared Perigo pulled away as Westfall used the extreme low groove to take second while Henry and Clouse battled for third.
Following a spun by Kody Swanson on lap six, Westfall used the restart to take several looks below Perigo for the lead, finally taking it on lap eight. Third running Henry took a nasty tumble in turn three on lap nine and walked away unscathed. That moved Hewitt to the third position with Clouse, Gardner and Steve Irwin in tow.
Westfall continued to use the bottom lane when the green came back out with Hewitt driving under Perigo for second on lap 11 with Close taking third two circuits later. Hewitt found the top side of turns three and four to his liking and drove into the lead on lap 14. Westfall continued to drive under Hewitt lap after lap but couldn't get the pass accomplished.
Westfall moved to the high line in turns three and four but the bottom of turns one and two and stayed within a car length of the leader and was able to take the lead as they took the white flag. Entering turn one on the last lap third place running Clouse gave it one last shot and drove into turn one hard under Westfall and Hewitt, making contact with Westfall who spun but kept going while Clouse sat facing the wrong direction to bring out the caution.
That handed Westfall the lead and when the green and white flew together Hewitt tried one last ditch run across the top of turns one and two but couldn't make the pass. Westfall held Hewitt off the final two corners and took the win with Gardner, Perigo and Irwin rounding out the top five.
Tyler Street and Bobby Clark brought the field to green for the 25-lap 305 A-main with Clark taking the lead over Ivy, Street, Roepke, Jamie Miller and Kyle Peters. Ivy immediately pressured Clark with Roepke joining the fun on lap three. The three car battle for the lead saw Roepke take the top spot on lap six but Clark battled back and regained the lead on lap seven with Roepke returning the favor a circuit later.
Roepke utilized the low line to maintain the lead over Clark, Ivy Street and Miller. But when heavy lapped traffic came into play just past the half way point, Ivy used the high line to take second and closed quickly on Roepke. Roepke would not move off the bottom and when he came to two lapped cars running the same line, Ivy raced to his outside.
With five laps to go Ivy took the outside line as Roepke struggled with the lapped cars. Ivy took the lead and Roepke spun. On the ensuing restart a Brandon Moore spin kept the field close. When the green game out for the last time, Ivy had to fend off a serious challenge from Clark as Street, Miller, Shawn Valenti and Peters gave chase.
Ivy was able to pull away the final three circuits for the win over Clark, Street, Miller and Valenti.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, July 27 on Baumann Auto Group Night with the AFCS 410 sprints battling for $4,000 to win. The AFCS 305 sprints and dirt trucks will also be in action.

MCCARTHY MAGNIFICENT IN FIRST-CAREER WIN AT VALLEY
GRAIN VALLEY, MO. (July 13, 2019) - Winning his first-career POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League feature on Saturday night at Valley Speedway, Ace McCarthy of Tahlequah, Okla. was undeniable in the 30-lap main event. Driving around his teammate, Jake Neuman, on the second circuit, McCarthy then fended off several attacks from young Holley Hollan as he held on for an impressive first-career triumph aboard the Jim Neuman Racing, Two-Eight Drilling, BOSS/SR-11 No. 28.
Sharing PAC Racing Springs High Point Men honors, the Jim Neuman Racing duo of Jake Neuman and Ace McCarthy brought the feature field to life as the green flag dropped. Neuman of New Berlin, Ill., who won Friday's feature, led the opening circuit aboard his Brandt, BOSS/SR-11 No. 3N by a nail-biting 0.008 seconds over McCarthy at the line.
Making his move on Neuman the next time by, McCarthy tossed a slider towards his teammate and received one right back at him in turn three. However, McCarthy was able to cross him up and dive down low to lead the second circuit and gain command of the top spot.
A pair of cautions bunched the field up and put a spotlight on Holley Hollan of Broken Arrow, Okla., as the 17-year old young woman maneuvered her Keith Kunz Motorsports, SIRIUS XM, Bullet/Toyota No. 67 into the second spot from seventh. Restarting with eight laps down, Hollan snuck below McCarthy and made it a side-by-side affair at the stripe, but McCarthy's momentum up top was too strong and he held on.
Coming by on lap 11, Hollan perfected the bottom side of turns three and four and was able to snag the lead as McCarthy's No. 28 was reeled in by the cushion. However, her lead was short-lived, as the caution flew for a three-car pileup, reverting us back to the last completed lap and handing McCarthy control.
Going back to green on the final restart with 12 laps to go, McCarthy caught some breathing room as Hank Davis of Sand Springs, Okla. challenged Hollan for second and held her up. The two briefly exchanged positions before Hollan was able to regain command of the runner-up spot and reasserted her attention to tracking down McCarthy.
Switching to the low side of turns one and two, but remaining committed to the cushion on the opposite end, McCarthy was able to build his advantage in the closing stages as an all-out war for third between Davis, Andrew Felker, Zach Daum, Jake Neuman and Daison Pursley took center stage.
In the end, Ace McCarthy's Jim Neuman Racing, Two-Eight Drilling, BOSS/SR-11 No. 28 was not to be denied, as the Tahlequah, Okla. native broke through to score his first-career POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League victory in the "Thunder in the Valley" finale at Valley Speedway.
Holley Hollan followed him to the line with career-best finish, driving the Keith Kunz Motorsports, SIRIUS XM, BOSS/SR-11 No. 67 from ninth-to-second. Andrew Felker of Carl Junction, Mo. rounded out the podium for the second night in a row, this time driving the Chad Shields Racing, MelMark Pipe & Supply, Ripper/Fontana No. 44S from 11th-to-third.
Rounding out the top ten on Saturday at Valley Speedway was Zach Daum in fourth, Hank Davis in fifth, Trey Marcham in sixth, Jake Neuman in seventh, Daison Pursley in eighth, Cannon McIntosh in ninth and Jesse Colwell in tenth.

Danny Dietrich scores $10,000 during All Star visit to Orange County Fair Speedway
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. (July 13, 2019) - New York has certainly been kind to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania’s Danny Dietrich, as the current Central PA sprint car point leader utilized a near-flawless performance on Saturday night at the ‘House of Power’ - Orange County Fair Speedway - to score a second Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory in 2019, his second with the All Stars in the Empire State. Adding some flare to his Middletown score, the Series triumph earned ‘Double-D’ a $10,000 top prize.
Impressive enough, Dietrich, who nearly swept the evening program at Orange County Fair Speedway by winning his respective heat race, the evening’s dash, and finally the 25-lap main event, now owns four All Star Circuit of Champions victories in the state of New York over the course of his career, adding Orange County Fair Speedway to a list that already includes Weedsport Speedway, Lebanon Valley Speedway, and Fonda Speedway.
Despite crossing under the final checkers by a margin of victory exceeding four seconds, Dietrich did not take command for good until lap 19, taking advantage of Gerard McIntyre’s misfortune after the All Star Rookie of the Year contender made contact with the outside retaining wall while leading. In fact, McIntyre led the majority of the 25-lapper, actually controlling 17 circuits, including the first, while attempting to keep Dietrich in his rearview mirror. Dietrich did slip by McIntyre to lead lap 12, but the New Oxford, Pennsylvania-native battled back instantly to regain control the following circuit.
“That was a lot of fun. Hats off to my team for their hard work so far this weekend. We have one more night to go, so hopefully we can cap this weekend with another win,” Danny Dietrich explained, driver of the Gary Kauffman Racing/Sandoe’s Fruit Market/Pace Performance/Sweeney Cars/Self Made Racing/No. 48 sprint car. “We were pretty good all night. We got close to Gerard [McIntyre] a few times before he made contact with the wall. I think we were just as good as him. Regardless, it was a great effort by everyone involved. I certainly wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t them.”
Although Dietrich was in pursuit of McIntrye from the drop of the green, the battle between the lead duo started to intensify on lap 11. McIntrye was in control ripping the top, but Dietrich was utilizing the shorter way around the speedway, closing-in on McIntyre inch by inch as the laps clicked off the counter. By lap 12, Dietrich was in position to make a bid for the top spot, eventually sliding through turns three and four to sneak by McIntyre as the pair raced back to the flagstand. McIntyre retaliated in a hurry, quickly returning to the topside to drive back around ‘Double-D’ to lead lap 13.
With heavy traffic coming into play by lap 15, things really started to heat up between McIntyre and Dietrich, actually translating into a near-nose to tail battle during the next three circuits. Lap 19 is when trouble struck for McIntyre, slipping up the track just enough in turn two to make contact with Orange County’s unforgiving retaining wall.
After inheriting the top spot, the main event quickly turned into the ‘Dietrich Show,’ ending the contest with a four second advantage and a $10,000 prize.
The All Star Circuit of Champions will conclude their three-day swing through New York on Sunday evening, July 14, with a visit to the ‘Valley of Speed’ - Lebanon Valley Speedway in West Lebanon, New York. Certainly synonymous with big action and high speed, the Sunday night blockbuster at Lebanon Valley Speedway will award a $7,000 top prize, as well as a minimum of $1,000 to each main event starter. With all positions considered, the main event’s total purse equals a staggering $39,450.
Lebanon Valley Speedway in West Lebanon, New York, will open pit gates at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 14. COURTNEY GETS WIN #6 AT JEFF CO.

Fairbury, Nebraska (July 13, 2019).........Only one driver has reached the six-win mark in a single USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget season faster than Tyler Courtney has this season. That was none other than Rich Vogler who reached six in his 13th race in 1978 and in his 14th race in 1988.
If there's a driver to run second to in the annals of USAC history, Vogler isn't a bad one to be looking up to.
Thus far, through 15 races of the season, Courtney hasn't had to look up to much of anybody. Nor did he in Saturday night's Riverside Chevrolet Midwest Midget Championship presented by Westin Packaged Meats and Schmidt's Sanitation at Jefferson County Speedway where he fended off a pesky Kevin Thomas, Jr. on a late-race restart to win the 40-lapper.
To put the season into perspective, Courtney came into this season with just five USAC National Midget feature wins to his credit. It took him less than half a season to outdo that mark on the 1/5-mile bullring in Fairbury, Neb. By doing so, he maintained his 90-point lead in the standings and inched closer to becoming the first driver to reach double-digit wins in the series since Vogler in 1988.
Though it appeared mostly stress-free for Courtney through much of the middle portion of the feature as he cut through traffic, that wasn't the case in the end, as the Indianapolis, Ind. native had to endure a late-race restart versus Thomas after the yellow flag flew with four laps remaining.
"I didn't want to see that," Courtney admitted. "I hadn't been on the bottom since the beginning of the race. I knew on restarts, it might be alright, but I was committed to running the top. I saw (Kevin Thomas, Jr.) race me on the last restart, and I knew I just needed to hit my marks there on the top. I messed up a couple times, and luckily, I think he may have messed up too. It worked out tonight and we're standing here in victory lane."
Courtney started from the pole, but it was outside front row starter Thomas who got the jump initially, riding the top to the lead as Courtney got shuffled back to 4th on the opening lap while Tanner Thorson and Jerry Coons, Jr. snuck by for 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
Courtney instantly worked his way back to the front, and quickly got returned to 3rd on the second lap and to the runner-up spot during a mad scramble behind race leader Thomas.
Following ninth-running Chad Boat's stoppage in between turns 3 and 4 on the fourth lap, Courtney took control on the ensuing restart as Thomas pulled the wheels up exiting the turn two cushion. Courtney drove by off the bottom to the lead.
Thomas ably reeled in Courtney by the halfway mark in traffic as the lappers went two and, at times, three-wide, forcing Courtney to split the cars of Lance Bennett and Shannon McQueen in turn one to find separation. He was successful and broke away, while Coons, Thomas and Seavey raced three-wide for fourth.
Although Brady Bacon's stop with 14 to go on the other side of the turn two banking tightened up the gap, the three lapped cars of Curtis Spicer, McQueen and Sam Johnson lie between Courtney and Thomas for the restart. On the tight bullring, Thomas got hung up behind the traffic and Courtney once again shot away to a one second advantage.
With four to go and a near-certain victory in sight for Courtney, Ethan Mitchell found himself spun backwards in turn three, setting up a last ditch, trophy dash for the win. With under five to go, lapped cars are sent to the tail by rule, putting Thomas and Tuesday night's Red Dirt winner Seavey right on Courtney's tail tank for the restart.
Tyler Courtney's 11th victory moved him into 62nd on the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget career win list alongside Kasey Kahne, Jimmy Knight, Bob McLean, Johnny Moorhouse, Bobby Santos and Brad Sweet.

"Racing with these guys is tough," Courtney said. "Especially when you've got (Kevin Thomas, Jr.) and Logan behind you. Really, everybody in the field is tough right now. We're on our game now and we've got to capitalize on nights like this when we start up front like that. You can't give up positions. You don't have any to give up."
Thomas put the challenge right on Courtney as he utilized the bottom to pull even with high-riding Courtney exiting turn two. With two laps remaining, Thomas got a surge off turn two to edge ahead of Courtney midway down the back straightaway. Courtney showed no wavering, riding the top back around Thomas to secure the spot off turn four. Thomas stayed within striking distance throughout the final lap, but Courtney was flawless, finishing out the victory by 0.365 sec. over K. Thomas, Seavey, Coons and ProSource/KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Tyler Thomas, from 11th.
For Kevin Thomas, Jr., despite the win eluding him on Saturday night, a second is a welcome gift after front-running efforts during the first two "Mid-America Midget Week" events were all for naught after getting caught up in a pair of wrecks that were not of his doing.
"We had a good racecar," K. Thomas said. "If only I just didn't screw up there at the beginning of the race; track position's everything. We had pretty equal cars there and he got through lapped traffic a little bit better. It was a little greasy down and was hard to maneuver around down there, but it was a really good racetrack. I tried to get cute there by running the bottom and trying to sneak by. It worked until I hit the grease down there. I think if I wouldn't have pushed, I could've won that race, but I did push, and we didn't win the race."

DYLAN SWINEHART, BRAD BRIGHTBILL, CASSEL AND NEIMAN WIN HATFIELD QUALITY MEATS FEATURES AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY SATURDAY NIGHT
BECHTELSVILLE, PA. JULY 14, 2019 . . . Dylan Swinehart, former Sportsman rookie driver, took on a big responsibility taking over the driving reins of the Bailey Fabrications 358 Modified No. 81 owned by his grandparents Dennis and Joanne Bailey for the 2019 season at Grandview Speedway. The third generation driver of the Swinehart/Bailey racing family with Dylan’s other grandfather being two-time Grandview point champion and still a weekly competitor Ray Swinehart, has been struggling with not qualifying, and other obstacles along the way, finally had a change of luck on Saturday night when he took home the checkered flag in the 30-lap TP Trailers NASCAR 358 Modified feature that was part of the Hatfield Quality Meats sponsored night of racing. A jubilant victor thanked his grandparents and commented he almost “lost it” since he was running the car so hard as he went on to become the sixth different winner in the division.
Brad Brightbill was in the right position at the right moment when track officials put leader Jack Butler back two positions on the 23rd lap restart because of his cat and mouse tactics on previous restarts that created numerous problems in the Firecracker 40-lap T. /P. Truck Equipment NASCAR Sportsman feature. Brightbill inherited the lead through this decision and went on to claim his third win of the season in the division and claimed a $2,000 payday.
In the 15-lap Blast From The Past feature, Andy Cassel won the Modified portion while Curt Neiman was the winner for the Vintage class.
The night’s activities were sponsored by Hatfield Quality Meats and broadcast live by RCN TV, Allentown.
Providing the Modified and Sportsman feature winners met the necessary requirements, they received monetary awards from TP Trailers and a certificate from VP Fuels for product awards. The Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award recipients were Swinehart and Butler. Derrick Smith was the highest finisher in 11th with a crate engine in the Sportsman division and received an extra $150.
Rookie Richie Hitzler led the first two laps of the Modified feature before Kevin Hirthler brought out the only yellow with a right rear flat tire. Following a quick pit stop he was able to rejoin the action. On the restart Swinehart, another rookie, charged into the lead with Hitzler, Joe Funk III, another rookie in the division; Kory Fleming and Ray Swinehart in tow.
Funk III took chase after Swinehart once he moved into second on the fifth lap.
For the next several laps the top five order continued to be Swinehart, Funk III, Hitzler, Fleming and R. Swinehart. Attempting to break into the top five were Timmy Buckwalter and Brett Kressley. Buckwalter got into fourth by the 16th lap, but it wasn’t until the 23rd lap that Kressley was fifth with both drivers on the move to advance.
By lap 25 Swinehart approached lap traffic and it didn’t take Funk III long to reel him in along with the rest of the top five consisting of Buckwalter, Kressley and Doug Manmiller.
Swinehart kept the competition behind him to pull into victory lane. Grabbing second as they crossed the line was Kressley followed by Funk III, Buckwalter and Manmiller.
Ryan Grim, D. Swinehart, Clay Butler and Kressley were the heat winners. Consies were won by Duane Howard and Louden Reimert.
Polesitter Steve Desmelyk led the Sportsman feature for six laps until Jesse Leiby stopped in the second turn for the caution. On the restart, third place runner Jack Butler took the inside lane and got past Chris Esposito and Desmelyk for the lead.
It didn’t take Butler long to build up a straightaway lead and just as he caught the back of the pack, Nathan Mohr spun along the homestretch. Butler brought the field in for the restart very slow bunching everyone else up behind him with Parker Guldin, already a feature winner this year; early leader Desmelyk and Mohr tangling in turn one. The next restart was no better and Andrew Kreis slowed in the first turn. Butler was warned on both occasions to pick up the pace on the restarts. Butler kept the lead, but by now Kyle Lilick was second followed by Brightbill, Esposito and Dean Bachman.
The yellow was out again when Ryan Beltz was spun along the backstretch. Brian Hirthler was placed to the back for the incident. Once again it was a slow start with everyone side-by-side bumper-to-bumper, but Butler maintained first.
Desmelyk spun again on the 22nd lap for another caution. At this time officials deemed it necessary to place Butler back to third for ignoring their warnings. This put Brightbill and Kyle Lilick trying to overtake him.
Towards the closing stages Brightbill approached lapped cars, but that didn’t hinder him and he went on to victory. Brightbill said in victory lane that “he didn’t like to win the race like that putting Jack back, but there’s nothing he could do about it.” Finishing second was Lilick followed by Butler, Brad Arnold and Dean Bachman.
Desmelyk, Esposito and Sean Weiss won the heats. The consi was won by Brandon Edgar.
Andy Cassel, running their Modified class, led the Blast From The Past feature, from start to finish with only one caution period to interrupt. Following Cassel across were Brett Peters, Jeff Paulson, Mike Stofflet and Todd Lapp. Curt Neiman, a Vintage car, finished sixth and won the division’s class segment.
Coming up on Saturday, July 20th is another tripleheader show featuring the Capital Renegade United Racing Club Sprints in their first appearance of the season at Grandview. Sprint events will be sponsored by Victory Auto Glass with the feature paying $2,000 to win. Heading up the Sprint action will be Josh Weller, Chad Layton, Curt Michael, Austin Bishop, former Grandview Late Model champion Ed Aikin who has a URC feature win this season and a host of other Sprint standouts. As an added attraction URC will be hosting a Legends Reunion in the first turn pavilion area. Legends will be signing autographs and chatting with fans starting at 6 p.m. Included amongst the legends will be Sean Michael, Becca Anderson, Mares Stellfox, Charlie Massey, Greg Coverdale, Frannie Hogue, Ed Wylie and host of others.
Thirty minutes earlier the Low Down and Dirty Meet & Greet will feature a handful of Grandview regulars and URC racers at the front admission gate.
The NASCAR 358 Modifieds and Sportsman will be making up the rest of the three division show that is sponsored by T.P.Trailers and Truck Equipment of Limerick, PA.
Adult admission for this not to be missed show is $25, youngsters 6 through 11 pay $5 and kids under 6 are admitted free.
