WINDOM WAXES 'EM AT ELDORA'S #LETSRACETWO

Rossburg, Ohio....May 12, 2018 -For Chris Windom, this is supposed to be his big May. The reigning USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champ has a jampacked schedule of short track races across the Midwest to compete in and is on the verge of his first start at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
If Saturday night's #LetsRaceTwo at Eldora Speedway was any indication of how this May will play out for the Canton, Ill. native, this month will truly be one to remember.
Windom took the lead from Kevin Thomas, Jr. on the fourth lap of the 30-lap feature at the western Ohio half-mile dirt oval and went on to hammer home USAC victory number one for 2018 and his first Sprint Car win at the track since 2013.
Rain was on the forecast and urgency was at the forefront as the show was pushed along to defeat Mother Nature. Yet it was Thomas who initially looked like the one to take the bull by the horns at the start, splitting between Chase Stockon and Windom just past the flag stand, then sliding up in front of pole sitter Joe Stornetta to grab the lead by turn one.
Windom immediately charged forth and tried to redeem a two-for-one discount coupon, sliding by Stornetta and Thomas in quick succession entering turn three to briefly snare the top spot before Thomas ducked back underneath to regain control exiting the fourth turn.
The first big incident of the night occurred in turn two on the third lap when 11th-running Justin Grant and another car made contact, sending the Ione, Calif. native on a wild ride that he would walk away from unscathed.
On the ensuing restart, more trouble ensued when third-running Stornetta climbed the outside wall between turns three and four and cartwheeled several times before coming to rest near the bottom of turn four. The series Rookie making just his second start at Eldora escaped injury.

On the restart, Windom got up on the wheel once again and went on the attack, running down Thomas with a successful turn one slider. Thomas fought back on both ends of the racetrack with a two-pack of sliders, to no avail.
"I don't know if there was urgency, but clean air here, even in a non-wing car, is crucial," Windom pointed out. "With the dust, and watching guys mess up on the cushion, it's just a lot easier being in the lead. I knew that the slider line (Thomas) was running would work on restarts, but I thought if I could get up and start getting my momentum going up top, it'd be better, and it was. When I saw the opportunity, I just took it. I wanted to get out to the lead and get away from everybody as quick as possible. Obviously, it helps with the great racecar (crew chief) Derek Claxton gave me."
Though it appeared Windom and the Baldwin Brothers Racing team had the "it" factor going on from the get-go, it wasn't initially clear to Windom how well his car was going to react as the race wore on at a feisty joint like "The Big E."
"The first couple of laps, I didn't know how great my car was with the way we were sliding ourselves," Windom admitted. "Once we started rolling the top, I knew the car was really good. As long as I didn't mess up on my end, it was going to be tough for anyone to get to us. This place is just so mentally and physically demanding. Running the cushion like that is tough to do for 30 laps."
By halfway, Windom's lead was a full-straightaway - a country mile, if you will - as a pack that included Stockon, Tyler Courtney, Robert Ballou and Friday night winner Brady Bacon sorted out the runner-up spot lap-after-lap with Courtney finally able to emerge with the second position on the 19th lap. But, by then, Windom's lead was a nearly insurmountable 4.843 seconds. It was a lead so large that Windom was unaware of how large it actually was.
"I didn't know I had that big of a lead," Windom exclaimed. "I knew we were pretty good, but when you start getting into lapped traffic, every little lapped car can slow you down just enough. It's such a momentum racetrack for a guy to catch you. You have to be slow and methodical through lapped traffic, but you can't let up too much. I tried to pick them off as quickly as I could and tried to get some guys between me and second."
By race's end, Windom had lapped up to eighth place. Courtney was able to make up some ground as Windom got hung up while threading the needle through traffic. But the hang-up was a brief one and not nearly enough to stall Windom as he finished hammering the proverbial nail, winning by a margin of 2.3 seconds over Courtney, Stockon, Bacon and Ballou.
"We've had a lot of good runs," Windom recalled. "I think we've had four or five podium finishes so far, but you get sick of those after a while and you just want to win a race. It's awesome to start it here!"

Donny Schatz Sweeps Outlaw Portion of Let’s Race Two Weekend at Eldora
ROSSBURG, OH – May 12, 2018 – The man is on a roll. Donny Schatz completed the weekend sweep of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series portion of Let’s Race Two at Eldora Speedway holding off Logan Schuchart for the second consecutive night. It was Schatz’ eighth win of the 2018 season and fourth in his last five starts as he continues to extend his lead atop the Series Point Standings in search of his 10th Outlaw Championship.
Schatz won the Sears Craftsman Dash and shared the front row with Parker Price-Miller. It was PPM getting the jump on the start as the Indiana native set the pace for the first four laps on the cushion before Schatz took command of the field on the fifth circuit on the bottom.
Schuchart just barely edged Price-Miller to the line on Lap 7, which was significant because the caution flew for Sheldon Haudenschild, lining Schuchart to the outside of Schatz. Haudenschild, who entered the evening third in the World of Outlaws Point Standings, was unable to return to action.
The restart saw Schatz and Schuchart put a straightaway back to the rest of the field, as the duo, who finished first and second a night ago, were once again the class of the field. Schuchart was able to keep his Shark Racing No.1S glued to the bottom of the Eldora Speedway racing surface and close in on Schatz.
But, catching Donny Schatz and passing Donny Schatz are two entirely different things. Every time it appeared Schuchart may have a run to get underneath Schatz, the Fargo, ND native would go to the bottom, forcing Schuchart to the top. Schuchart’s No.1S was not as strong on the cushion, allowing Schatz to maintain the lead each time.
With consecutive Green Flag action, lapped traffic played a factor. Schatz reminded everyone why he is the nine-time and defending Series Champion with his prowess through a maze of lapped cars. Schuchart, an Outlaw winner at Eldora last year, stayed right with Schatz every step and just as he was about to pull even with the Champion, the caution flew for an ailing Spencer Bayston with five laps remaining.
With five or fewer laps remaining in the Feature, the start was single-file. Schuchart and third-place running Aaron Reutzel both stayed with Schatz on the restart, but Donny was too strong and went on to take the checkered flag 1.536 seconds ahead of Schuchart.
“We love lapped traffic. That’s where races are won and lost,” Schatz said in Victory Lane when prompted about the close-quartered racing action. “My guys are incredible. We keep working, keep digging and keep finding ways to be up here at the end of the night,” Schatz added before expressing his thanks to the fans for coming out and thanking the track and officials for running an accelerated program to beat Mother Nature.
When asked about the close racing with Schuchart, Schatz referenced an old tale from his father, “If you are worried about what is behind you, you are going to have a hell of a time handling what’s in front of you. I’ve always raced like that and tonight was no different.”
Schuchart was pleased with his second consecutive runner-up finish. “It was a lot of fun racing up there. I know my heart was pumping, it was hard to stay calm,” the upbeat Hanover, PA native said. “What a great weekend for us. Two podiums and if you are going to finish second to someone, that’s a hell of a team to finish behind. They are incredible, but we are going to try and keep working hard to beat them,” Schuchart added.
Reutzel’s 2018 speed continued as he followed up last night’s disappointment of wrecking while leading with a podium finish. “I probably should have been a little more aggressive on the top, but we definitely wanted to finish after last night,” the Texan and current All-Star point leader said.
Kraig Kinser had an impressive 15th to fourth run for his best finish of the season with Tim Shaffer completing the top five. Early race leader Parker Price-Miller settled for sixth with Kerry Madsen, 17th-starting Brad Sweet, 22nd-starting Ian Madsen and 24th-starting Daryn Pittman completing the top ten. Pittman claimed KSE Hard Charger honors for the second consecutive night.
The Greatest Show on Dirt continues its 40th Anniversary Season with a haul to the Hoosier State for a third-attempt at racing at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, IN tomorrow evening Sunday, May 13. After that, the Series will head to Central Pennsylvania to take on the tough Pennsylvania Posse at Lincoln Speedway on May 16 and at Williams Grove on May 18 and 19. Schatz Scores Third Win in Last Four Starts on Night One of Let’s Race Two at Eldora
ROSSBURG, OH – May 11, 2018 – Donny Schatz inherited the lead on Lap 14 and held off a late race charge from Logan Schuchart to claim the victory on the opening night of the Let’s Race Two weekend at Eldora Speedway. It was Schatz’ 7th win of the 2018, extending his point lead atop the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series Point Standings. Schuchart finished second with Brad Sweet finishing third.
Ohio native Cole Duncan set fast time over the 37-car field, won his heat race and was victorious in the Sears Craftsman Dash to earn the pole for the 30-lap Feature. Duncan, in search of his first career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory, shared the front row with legend and fellow Buckeye Jac Haudenschild, who was seeking his 74th career Outlaw victory.
It was Haudenschild getting the jump at the tip of the Green and leading the opening circuit. Third-starting Donny Schatz swooped underneath Duncan to take second the following lap. Haudenschild, or more often referred to as ‘The Wild Child’, lived up to his nickname every bit as he flirted with the dangerous cushion and was up against the wall fending off Schatz narrowly at the line for the first five laps in exciting fashion.
A Lap 6 caution for Hunter Schuerenberg halted the action and bunched the field together. On the restart, Schatz, on the bottom, remained right with Haudenschild, but this time sixth-starting Aaron Reutzel was right in tow. The trio sliced and diced their way as they battled for the lead, utilizing every inch of the Eldora Speedway racing surface.
On Lap 11, Reutzel made an eye-catching move going around the nine-time Series Champion before going wheel-to-wheel with Haudenschild and pulling even with The Wild Child on the front stretch, trailing him by .005 at the conclusion of the 11th circuit. Reutzel would take command of the field on Lap 12.
Schatz continued to jockey with Haudenschild, which allowed Reutzel, who scored his first career Outlaw win earlier this season at Tulare, to put a couple car-lengths between himself and Schatz and Haudenschild. Schatz finally wrestled the runner-up spot away from Haudenschild on Lap 13 and set his eyes on the Texas native for the lead on what promised to be a great battle.
Disaster struck for Reutzel on Lap 14, as he bobbled just enough on the thin Eldora Speedway cushion to lose the handle on his No.87, before making heavy contact with the outside retaining wall, ending his night. Schatz and Haudenschild both showed their veteran prowess avoiding Reutzel’s ailing machine as it bounced back into the racing line. Reutzel was uninjured in the accident and expressed his apologies to his race team stating the dangerous Eldora cushion got the better of him tonight.
One lap later, David Gravel was left nowhere to go and spun in turn two, creating a logjam that included Carson Macedo, Rico Abreu and Joey Saldana. Gravel and Abreu were able to make repairs, but Macedo and Saldana’s nights both came to an end.
The action remained intense on the restart as cars scattered around the Eldora racing surface. Brad Sweet had an excellent restart and moved into the runner-up position and nearly completed a slider on Schatz for the lead, to no avail as the Fargo, ND native powered around Sweet on the cushion.
Eighth-starting Logan Schuchart began making the bottom work and took the runner-up spot away from Sweet with eight laps remaining. Schuchart closed in on Schatz, who made a daring move splitting lapped cars, to extend the lead once again just as Schuchart was preparing to bid for the lead. Schuchart, who won during last year’s Let’s Race Two event at Eldora, closed in one last time with two laps remaining, but Schatz was too strong and took the checkered flag 1.041 seconds in front of the Hanover, PA native with Sweet completing the podium.
“I had a good car, we played around a little and tried something different, but this team just continues to work. We probably weren’t the best car tonight, but we are here standing with the checkered flag,” Schatz said in Victory Lane. When asked about Reutzel’s move for the lead and crash, Schatz said, “He was really fast, but he wore it out. That’s the big part of racing with the World of Outlaws. You’ve got to finish races to win the Championship and sometimes you can’t go as hard to make sure you finish these races.
Schatz also praised the Eldora Speedway track crew, “Everyone has a different perspective of what is a good race or not. There were multiple grooves and guys were making moves all over the place and that’s really all you can ask for.”
Jac Haudenschild settled for fourth with Duncan completing the top five. Gary Taylor, who was as high as second at one point, faded late to sixth. Sheldon Haudenschild came forward to seventh with 14th-starting Jason Johnson, 26th-starting Daryn Pittman and Kerry Madsen completing the top ten. Pittman’s effort was good enough to earn KSE Hard Charger honors, advancing 17 positions. Brady Bacon was the lone driver to compete in both portions of the Let’s Race Two. Bacon was victorious with USAC by nearly five seconds and finished 16th with the wing on in the Feature.

BACON BLAZES ELDORA FOR #LETSRACETWO NIGHT ONE WALLOP

Rossburg, Ohio.....May 11, 2018 -Brady Bacon is a renaissance man of sorts. Wing or wingless, running the top or the bottom, the Broken Arrow, Okla. native seems to adapt to a multitude of situations on any given racetrack.
Under the Friday night lights of Eldora Speedway's #LetsRaceTwo, Bacon was thrust into performing all those roles within a single performance as the lone wheelman pulling double-duty with both the USAC AMSOIL National and World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Cars.
Bacon was exemplary on both ends of the spectrum, conquering his second career USAC Sprint Car victory on the high banks, doing so by riding his way to victory on the wave of the expected and the unexpected.
Wheels right up against the concrete - that's the expected line at Eldora that involves putting the right rear rubber smack dab up against the outer wall. Then there's the not-so-expected hide-and-seek line in which the left side wheels are within earshot of the inside walls in the corners before the car emerges from the bottom having gained substantial ground.
Bacon did it all in one night and even translated what he learned from one car to the other to get a feel for the track and find a comfort zone for himself.
"The B-Feature (in the wing car) really helped me," Bacon admitted. "I ran the top pretty much wide open. It's not as fast in a non-wing car, but you have a lot less control too. If the wing cars are on the cushion, then the non-wing cars are definitely going to be up there. It was an old-school Eldora tonight. I did kind of make the bottom off (turn) four work a little bit, which is a little uncharacteristic for here, but it's been working for us the last couple times."
Yet, Bacon would have his work cut out for him. He had to start eighth in the field, trailing a lineup that held a collective eight career USAC National Sprint Car victories at "The Big E" coming into the night's 30-lap main event, five of which belonged to Robert Ballou, who slid up to the lead past Chris Windom from the pole position to hold the early lead.
As the front runners ringed their way around the top, Bacon inch-wormed his way forward on the bottom and, by halfway, was erasing Ballou's once-happening lead. Bacon hit the top-shelf with authority between turns one and two and tickled the twines of the bottom line in three and four. Although, at times, lapped traffic would stifle Bacon's baseline shuffle, it would not deter him for long.

'It was getting trickier to hit the bottom, but I just kept it in my back pocket. I knew it was so treacherous up top and easy to lose your momentum. There really wasn't much grip to gain your speed back. I just knew if he got slowed up or started making mistakes, I could probably get underneath him on the bottom. We still got trapped under some lapped cars, but we were able to clear them before he did. I was a little worried he was going to come back around us, but once we got out there, I tried not to make any mistakes. On the 19th lap, Bacon took the initiative and went on the attack, using a big run to split between Ballou on the high side and the lapped car of Chad Boespflug on the inside. Like a motorist gracefully avoiding a rush hour headache by hitting the exit ramp just prior to traffic backing up to a standstill, Bacon found the open road, put the top down, mashed the throttle and checked out.

From there, Bacon gradually constructed what would become an insurmountable advantage in the caution-free event, which eventually ballooned to a full-straightaway by race's end, defeating Ballou by a margin of 5.733 seconds. Windom was third ahead of Justin Grant and Kevin Thomas, Jr.
A full slate of non-stop competition that included jumping back-and-forth, to-and-fro from the USAC car to the WoO car was not an issue for the two-time USAC National Sprint Car champ on this night. Neither was a caution-free affair that was completed at a clip of less than nine-and-a-half minutes, something that is not as physical to Bacon as it may seem to the outsiders.
"This place is more mental than physical," Bacon contends. "You can get mentally worn out. That happens more to me after the '4-Crown.' I just kind of zone out after it's over. As long as you're breathing and doing everything right, it's not that tiring. It's definitely a lot easier when things are going your way."
After a rough start to the season that included exiting the Dooling-Hayward Motorsports/Richard Childress Racing ride following a tumultuous term at Ocala, Fla. in February, Bacon brought his own team to the forefront to compete on the USAC trail. It's something that has been a challenge to get back up and going, but now Bacon is beginning to reap those rewards.
"We've come a long way," Bacon reflects. "I knew we had all the ingredients to win. We just had to figure out how to put them all together. It's been a few years since I've run this package. We've kind of been looking back; we called the Hoffmans a couple times and brought out the notebook to figure out where we were. Things have changed a lot in a couple years; it's constantly evolving. The shocks are getting better and what we used to do doesn't really work anymore. We're trying to find the balance to be fast at the beginning and at the end of the night. This place caters to me or the more experienced drivers. It's good to get a win close to where I live. Lots of friends are here watching and, obviously, this is a prestigious place."

The always unpredictable weather pattern in the Northeast has kept the speedway promoters on their toes with mops in hand for the early part of the 2018 racing season. Accord Speedway Promoters Gary and Donna Palmer have witnessed the highs and the lows of the crazy weather for the past 18 years and have weathered those storms and gales to produce some of the most highly-spirited racing action in the Northeast. Friday found the the rare occasion when the threat of a storm wasn't present in the area and the racers put on a great show last night at the speedway. The favorable weather brought out the largest crowd of the season to enjoy a great night of entertainment. Arkel Motors was the headline sponsor for the evening of speed.(www.arkelmotors.com)
Hard working Accord promoter Gary Palmer continues to work overtime to give his driving roster the best possible racing facility he can and the race to the walls speed channels were a true testament to his dedication to his craft as the speedway offered many racing seams for the drivers to display their speed and guile.
The exciting seven feature race card found "Jammin" Jimmy Wells returning to the WRWD Radio Victory Lane for the first time in 2018 in the Insinger Fuels Modified division. "The Big D" Danny Morgiewicz scored his first ever win at Accord in the Arkel Motors Sportsman division finale. Travis Brockner was fast and then some as he top-sided his way to victory in the Upstate Auto Pure Stock Division feature event. Bob Tersillo was lightning fast as he grabbed up his third win of the season in the WRWD Radio NEWS Sprint Cars. Charles Loiodice captured the WRWD Radio Rookie Sportsman feature event. Jeff DeGroat captured the pair of Emmanuels Marketplace Fireball 4-Cylinder events held at the speedway.
Brad Rothaupt and Ray See Jr brought the Insinger Fuels Modified starting field to the line for the start of the 30-lap main grind. Rothaupt would lead the first lap before sixth starting Jimmy Wells put his Upstate Auto Wagon at the top of the staircase and assumed control of the lead. Wells, to put it bluntly, was on his own set of rails as he stretched his lead with every lap. Uncle Mike Ricci shot between a couple of cars to take over second and Anthony Perrego broke free to fall in behind Ricci. By the halfway point
Wells enjoyed more than a straightaway lead and then began to hit traffic.
Ricci closed the gap to within six car lengths with Perrego in tow. This night, however, belonged to Wells as he crossed under the checkered flag with room to spare and with it his first win of the season. Mike Ricci was a strong runner-up just nipping Anthony Perrego who finished third. Danny Creeden came on strong from eleventh to finish fourth and Tommy Johnson ran an exceptional event to claim fifth. Brad Rothaupt headed up the second five with Danny Tyler, Richard Smith, Ed Dachenhausen and Eddie Burgess completing the top ten.
The Arkel Motors Sportsman event was a true to life barnburner as a fast field of race cars highlighted another great event. It would be the youngster Ryan McCartney jumping into the lead at the start and he would lead through the first six laps. Danny Morgiewicz took over the lead on a restart on lap seven and a couple of laps later reigning track champion Kyle Rohner would begin an all out assault for the top spot. Lap after lap the duo battled it out with Morgiewicz controlling the top line and Rohner digging for all he was worth from the baseline. Rohner would pull even at times but Morgiewicz had that little extra to hold off Rohner. The event became an immediate classic as two talented drivers duked it out for the win. Morgiewicz would not be denied as he edged Rohner for his first ever win at Accord. Rohner was second with Nick Plumstead third, Matt Shultz fourth and Jamie Yannone completing the top five. Tyler Johnston headed up the second five with Hunter Lapp, Leo Fotopolous, Ryan McCartney and Chris VanDuser completing the top ten.
"The Travelin Man" Mick D'Agostino jumped out front in the WRWD Radio NEWS Sprint Car division twenty lap main and the rookie sprint driver appeared headed to victory. On lap-18 D'Agostino slid up over the cushion and allowed Bobby Tersillo and Eric Jennings to get by. Tersillo would lead the final two laps to claim his third straight win for the season. Jennings was second with the disappointed D'Agostino third Jordan Lawrence fourth and the returning Don Smith fifth. Dan Malley and Mark Conolly followed.
The Upstate Auto Pure Stock main event began with Travis Brockner grabbing the lead at the start with Ray Tarantino sliding into second and it set-up another great feature attraction. Brockner was fast on the top of the raceway and Tarantino kept hounding him lap after lap for the top spot. Brockner never waivered as he led all of the way to claim his first feature win of the season. Tarantino was the runner-up with Livy Johnson giving her Tom's Repair Shop hot rod a good work out with a third place run. Steve Williams and John Hechinger completed the top five. Steady Jay Smalley, opening night winner Emerson Cargain Jr, Chris Kanuk, newcomer Amber VanOrden and Bob Sleight completed the top ten.
The WRWD Radio Rookie Sportsman feature became a shortened event at fourteen laps due to time restraints but the racing was good throughout. Cole Stangle led the first lap and then gave way to Jared Miller. Miller would lead through lap seven when Stangle regained control of the lead. Slower traffic found the leaders trying to figure out the best way around them but Charles Loiodice found the upper reaches of the speedway open and he placed his car there and came out of turn four as the race leader. A caution on lap fourteen ended the event with Loiodice winning his first ever at the speedway with Stangle in the runner-up role and Travis Green finishing third. Jeff Higham and Joe Coppola completed the top five. Newcomer Jason Armstrong, Mike Travis, Jared Miller, Amanda Carson and Jamie Doolan finished up the top ten.
The Fireball 4-Cylinders first event was the held over event from a week ago. Willie DeGraw led the first two laps before yielding to Jeff DeGroat. DeGroat raced through the field with ease and won over Richard Smith, DeGraw, Ken Barringer and Anthony Tarantino.
The second event for the Fireballers found pretty much the same scenario as this time it would be Gary Quick leading the first two laps before DeGroat took over. DeGroat would go on to his win of the evening with Jerry Kingeter second, while Richard Smith, Ryan Heady and Gary Quick completed the top five.
Gemstones:
Heat winners for the evening included Andrew Davis and Bobby Tersillo in the Sprint heats. Travis Brockner and Ray Tarantino scored wins in the Pure Stock division. The Sportsman ranks found Harry Baldwin, Nick Plumstead and Hunter Lapp scoring victories. Enjoying wins in the Modified heats were Brad Rothaupt, Joe Judge and Tommy Johnson. Rookie heats went to Cole Stangle, Charles Loiodice and Travis Green Two heats were needed for the Fireballers and Jerry Kingeter and Jeff DeGroat were the winners.
New cars on hand included Kurt Hundeland, Jessie Marks and Mark Pullen in the Modifieds. Collin DuBois and Mike Murphy made their first starts of the season in the Sportsman. Don Smith and Rich Mellor were nice additions to the Sprint Car Ranks. Johnny Miracle, Curt Ayers and James Goetchius were first timers in the Pure Stocks. Jason Armstrong, Jamie Doolan, Keith Johannesen and Billy Fiske new new additions to the Rookies.
Bob Sleight and Steve Williams traded cars for the evening.
A tip of the fedora to Promoter Gary Palmer for having the speedway groomed to perfection for the evening of speed. The track was racy from top to bottom and three and four wide racing were commonplace
throughout the night.
Grandma Anne's fresh pies made it back to victory lane as all winners received some goodness for their quest for victory lane.

Seth Bergman Excels At Lakeside Speedway With The Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series

(May 10, 2018) The first repeat winner of the 2018 season with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by Sawblade.com, Washington's Seth Bergman tracked down his first career Lakeside Speedway triumph to become the fifth National Tour winner in just as many events at the Kansas oval.
"This was a tough field. I was trying to conserve my tires there at the beginning because the track was wearing tires all night, but we got to a point where [Brian] Brown lid me and I knew I had to get going," stated Seth who went slide for slide with Brown following a Lap 9 restart.
"That race was a workout. I don't know if I've ever driven that hard, but Brown made me get up on the wheel and I think I caught Tony because he was out front and just didn't know where the track was going. He was leaning on the cushion the whole race, and when you're leading, it's hard to move around and search. I was just fortunate enough to be able to mix it up and found a lane that worked."
The third driver to lead the way in Thursday's McCarthy Auto Group KC Klassic A-Feature, Seth found the center line coming into play as the race approached Lap 20. With Stewart railing the cushion at both ends of the four-tenths mile oval, Seth began quickly cutting down his advantage. Setting up for the run with 19 laps complete, Bergman was able to race to the lead on the following lap.

"When you're the leader, it's hard to search and know if rubber comes in. The guy behind you are able to search around and find it, and the two guys that finished ahead of us are really good Racecar drivers and really good Sprint Car drivers," stated Stewart who ended up third for the second night in a row as Brian Brown worked by Stewart's Rush Truck Centers No. 14 on Lap 21.
Chasing Jack Dover the first round, Stewart stuck the right rear to the cushion and grabbed the lead on the second lap with both crossing the line at the same time. Caution on Lap 9 for Harli White who slowed off the second turn, the restart was short lived as Robbie Price and Paul Nienhiser tangled in the first turn with Nienhiser keeping his No. 9 rolling, and thus, keeping the fifth position. Falling to sixth as the field rolled again on the next restart, Paul's night ended with mechanical issues on Lap 12.
Coming to a stop on Lap 14 with Jamie Ball and Chris Martin tangling on the backstretch, the race resumed with Stewart leading over Dover, Bergman, Brown, and Hafertepe in the top-five. Immediately pulling away as Bergman slide Jack Dover to second, the center groove in play put Seth able to run down the No. 14 and lead the final six laps.
Brian Brown in second advanced nine positions to pick up the night's CP-Carrillo Hard Charger.
"My team, Chad, Michael, Dad, everybody on the Casey's General Store/FVP car did good. I just didn't do my job in the Heat Race and got us buried and really at one point, I passed Seth a couple times so I'm kind of kicking myself for not being able to secure that spot because that could have been me standing there, but Seth did a great job."
Jack Dover slipped to fourth in the closing laps with Sam Hafertepe, Jr. making the top-five. From 10th, Wayne Johnson came up to finish sixth with Blake Hahn coming to seventh from 12th. Scott Bogucki grabbed eighth with Terry McCarl ninth. Johnny Herrera from 16th completed the top-ten.
A field of 30 drivers was on hand for the McCarthy Auto Group KC Klassic. Into four Heat Races, wins went to Mason Daniel, Seth Bergman, Scott Bogucki, and Tony Stewart. The night's B-Feature went to Ayrton Gennetten. Three provisional starts were used. On National Tour owner points, Roger Crockett and Matt Covington entered with Curtis Evans qualifying for a Regional Provisional.

THOMAS AUTOCORRECTS ON LAST LAP TO WIN PLYMOUTH BARNBURNER

Plymouth, Indiana May 5, 2018 .........A little tap never hurt anyone. A solid tap of a golf ball on a put can be the difference between winning and losing in a round of golf. A swift tap of the mic can reinforce that everything is A-Okay with the audio. A soft tap on the shoulder can gain another person's attention.
However, a little tap on the rear bumper of Kevin Thomas, Jr.'s ride on the final lap nearly proved disastrous. But the Cullman, Ala. driver gathered himself and kept his composure to run down Robert Ballou in the third turn with a go-for-broke slider that paid off with his second-straight USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car win Saturday night at Plymouth Speedway.
Thomas executed a rare perfect night by setting fast time, winning his heat race and capturing the night's feature, something that's only been done once in each of the last four seasons.
Thomas started his methodical march to the front from the sixth position as a host of drivers in the first two rows battled for the lead. Recent Bloomington winner Dave Darland emerged as the initial leader on lap one by mere inches while one-lap track record holder Chase Stockon wheel-stood his way past Darland to the lead by the time the field reached turn one.
Meanwhile, third-starting Tyler Courtney had flipped the switch and motored around the outside of Stockon in turn four on the fourth circuit to snare the lead. Courtney had much less ground to make up compared to a year ago at Plymouth when he charged to second from his 18th starting position. This time, he appeared to have the field covered throughout the first half of the 30-lapper, constructing a three-fourths of a straightaway lead by the 14th lap when Kyle Cummins was found turned around at the exit of turn four.
The caution bunched up the field momentarily, but Courtney came off the starting block like an Olympic sprinter to post an eight-car length lead when racing resumed. As he appeared to check out on the rest of the field, Thomas and Ballou became the naysayers to that notion. On the 17th lap, Thomas muscled his way around Stockon on the high side of turn four for second and, moments later, Ballou scooted by Stockon on the inside of the back straightaway to occupy third.
In the blink of an eye, Courtney's lead began to shrink as Thomas tightened the leash on Courtney's collar three car-lengths back. But on lap 20, Daylan Chambers pancaked the back straightaway wall, scattering debris across the countryside as he slanted toward the infield to bring out the final caution period of the night.
Thomas was now in a position to go to school on Courtney, benefitting from shadowing the leader late in the going, just as he did exactly one week ago in his victory at Indiana's Tri-State Speedway.

'My initial thought was that I was going to spin out,' Thomas admitted. 'I had just enough to get it back pointed straight. He (Ballou) was just not far enough ahead to get away and I thought I could do a slider that wasn't going to crash both of us and do something stupid by ruining a good finish for both of us. "Once again, it was kind of beneficial to be behind the leader," Thomas acknowledged. "Once I started running the top there in (turns) three and four, I figured out it had some grip and some speed. Once we got to lapped traffic, I went to the bottom a few times and had a pretty good drive. So, on the restart, I started working the bottom in one and two and the top in three and four. I could stay with him a lot better in one and two and he'd make up ground in three and four."
On the 23rd lap, Courtney continued to run the middle/low line while Thomas put his Dynamics, Inc. No. 69 up top. At the exit of four, Courtney swung wide toward the outside wall to keep Thomas at bay. Thomas replied by countering to the bottom entering turn one as Courtney remained high. Thomas slipped by and Ballou tagged along for the ride as well, executing a sweeping pass around the outside of Courtney for second between turns one and two a half-lap later.
"It's one of those deals," Thomas explained about the pass on Courtney. "He was just running where he got the lead at. It's no fault of his. It's the unfortunate part about leading. The track changed so much there at the end and, if you're leading, you don't want to search, but that's just the beneficial part for us running in second, being able to search."
On the final lap, Ballou was surging as Thomas and he worked around the lapped car of Johnny Petrozelle. Entering turn one, Ballou completely erased the interval and closed so rapidly on Thomas, the two made contact with Ballou's front bumper lightly tapping Thomas' rear bumper. It was enough to send Thomas squirrelly at the exit of turn two, allowing Ballou to overtake Thomas for the lead by a single car-length entering turn three. After gathering his marbles, Thomas reached into his back pocket and fired a slider across the nose of Ballou. Ballou pitched the car 90 degrees, nearly losing control, allowing Thomas to break away for his 20th career series win while Courtney slipped underneath Ballou for his second-straight runner-up finish at Plymouth. Ballou recovered to grab third ahead of Stockon and Brady Bacon.

Regarding the tap from Ballou on the last lap, Thomas saw it as just racing, nothing more. In fact, he pointed the finger squarely at himself for the initiation of the contact.
"That's just racing on the bottom," Thomas acknowledged. "It's no big deal. That's just the way it is. Honestly, it's my fault. I chalked it up a little too much. He was agressive and he could've spun me out if he really wanted to. He could've just completed the process, but he didn't. He just made a little bit of contact. It is what it is. We'll race hard again next week and the week after. It's just no big deal."
Ballou slipped to third at the end, but the race very well could've been his had Thomas not gathered it up so quickly after the contact on the final lap.
The whole race he was running it in there really hard. He had moved up a little bit, he moved down, he was doing the same thing I was, searching for the fastest lane possible.
"I don't know what he was thinking," Ballou pondered. "He just came to a stop. He slowed down more than he had done on any other lap. I had the thing stuck and I had no choice but to run into him. If I wanted to, I could've spun him completely around, but that isn't the right thing do. I don't want to win a race by spinning out a guy to win. I eased off as long as I could and let him get unhooked from my front bumper. I didn't have a good run down the back straightaway and he was in the moisture. He was going to beat me to the outside lane in the middle of (turns) three and four. I'd have probably ended up out on 31 if I hadn't lifted and tried to do something different. When I tried to turn the car and get a run across the racetrack, it just busted free and tried to spin out on me. I was just thankful to salvage a third-place by that point."
