Cory Eliason scores $20,000 Huset’s Grand Re-Opening for first All Star win of 2020
BRANDON, S.D. (August 2, 2020) - For the first time in 2020, Visalia, California’s Cory Eliason is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, doing so in fantastic fashion during Huset’s Speedway’s Grand Re-Opening on Sunday evening, August 2. Forced to outduel the ‘Madman’ Kerry Madsen, as well as fend off late charges by Dominic Scelzi and Ian Madsen, Eliason’s triumph was accomplished in front of a capacity crowd at the Brandon, South Dakota venue, securing $20,000 in the process and now within 92 points of the Series championship lead.
“This place is badass,” an elated Cory Eliason said in Huset’s Speedway victory lane, driver of the Rudeen Racing/Hagar Reality/Rayce Rudeen Foundation/No. 26 sprint car. “This is probably the best crowd that I’ve seen this season and it’s incredible. Thank you all for coming out and supporting this race.”
Starting from the outside-pole position, Eliason followed Kerry Madsen for the first 11 circuits, not imposing a real threat until the frontrunners reached traffic for the first time on lap nine. By lap 12, Eliason was in position to pounce, taking advantage of Madsen’s brush with the turn four wall to drive by the Killer Instinct Crossbows No. 2M to lead the circuit.
Despite near-devastating contact, Kerry Madsen persevered, getting back by Dominic Scelzi on lap 16, who followed Eliason by the No. 2M, before executing a perfect slider to drive by Eliason in turn four on lap 17.
Madsen’s pace through traffic eventually dwindled allowing Eliason to close-in on the ‘Madman’ once again. Utilizing the very topside of the speedway, Eliason was back within striking distance on lap 19, using the next four circuits to build enough momentum to make another bid for the lead. On lap 23, Eliason was back in control, driving right around Madsen who tried to hug the bottom of turns three and four. Dominic Scelzi mimicked Eliason’s move and also drove by Madsen.
“This place definitely reminds me of Tulare and Chico back home,” Cory Eliason continued. “I was concerned when Kerry got to the front that it was going to be game over for us, but lapped traffic came into play and it really helped us out. We had a really nice race car tonight. I can’t thank everyone enough who helps us out. Kevin Rudeen is here tonight so it’s special to get a win with him and the team.”
Kerry Madsen held on to finish third at Huset’s Speedway, followed by a hard charging Ian Madsen and Rico Abreu.

The Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 will enjoy two weekends away from action before returning to competition on Friday evening, August 21, at the I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Michigan. The two week break will allow full-time All Star Circuit of Champions competitors the opportunity to return to Knoxville Raceway for 360 and 410 action on August 6-8 and August 13-15, respectively.

CUMMINS COLLECTS TRI-STATE FINALE; STOCKON SEALS ISW TITLE

Haubstadt, Indiana (August 2, 2020).........Sunday's NOS Energy Drink Indiana Sprint Week finale at Tri-State Speedway turned out to be a homecoming of sorts for a pair of drivers who reside within a stone's throw of the Haubstadt, Ind. track.
Kyle Cummins, about 15 minutes down the road in Princeton, continued his mastery of the quarter-mile dirt oval by winning Sunday's 30-lap feature all while putting his name atop the leaderboard in terms of USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature victories at Tri-State with five, alongside Daron Clayton and Kevin Thomas, Jr.
Meanwhile, the series' Ironman in consecutive feature starts at 310, Chase Stockon, hails from Fort Branch, a literal seven-minute drive northbound on US 41 from the track. Of those 310 consecutive USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car starts, perhaps few have generated the same type of personal satisfaction as did capturing his first Indiana Sprint Week title after a decade-straight of trying.
Entering Sunday's feature, six drivers remained mathematically eligible to secure the Indiana Sprint Week title. Stockon trailed Justin Grant by just five points, and those two, along with Brady Bacon, C.J. Leary, Chris Windom and Logan Seavey, were separated by a mere 35 points between them.
Cummins, who had been eliminated from ISW title contention following the heat races earlier in the evening, now simply had visions of a feature win dancing on his mind and was slotted to start the feature event from the pole position. Stockon, meanwhile, started 7th and Grant 11th.
The initial two attempts of taking the green flag resulted in a pair of stackups, the first of which saw a four-car turn one pile-up involving between Kent Schmidt, Jadon Rogers, Stevie Sussex and Critter Malone. The ensuing try saw Bacon, Malone and Aric Gentry stop on the front straightaway prior to hitting the start/finish line. Bacon, who trailed the ISW points by nine entering the feature, pulled off to the work area under yellow and briefly returned, only to drop to the infield prior to the race's resumption to finish 23rd.
The third start was the charm, but this time Chris Windom, 5th in the ISW standings coming into the A, ripped around Cummins from his outside front row starting position to lead the opening lap. Cummins didn't allow Windom to distance himself too far and roared to the lead past Windom on the second lap with a turn three slider. Fourth starting Shane Cottle mimicked the turn three maneuver past Windom a lap later for 2nd while Garrett Aitken slotted himself into 3rd.
By lap seven, Cummins had established a full-straightaway lead over Cottle, and by lap nine, was amidst a flurry of traffic at the tail end of the lead lap. However, a yellow for 6th running Tony DiMattia, making his first series start of 2020, rode the top of the turn four wall before coming to a rest on all fours back on the racing surface, which halted the action on the 10th lap.
Aitken, making the best run of his USAC Sprint Car career in just his sixth series start, threw his hat into contention with a turn one slide job for 2nd by Cottle on the 11th lap. A lap later, Aitken tagged the wall in turn two causing him to lose a couple spots while, behind him, four drivers on the fringes of the top-ten - Carson Short, Kevin Thomas Jr., C.J. Leary and Brandon Mattox - were stacked deep and stopped in turn one.
The timely yellow for Aitken put the Paris, Ill. driver back in second behind Cummins where he proceeded to slide by Cummins for the race lead in turn one. Quickly, Cummins cut back under Aitken at the exit of turn two to retain the lead, then slid himself through turn three to disavow any countermeasure from Aitken for the time being.
Following a plethora of precipitation that fell in recent days, Cummins hypothesized that the track had a much different feel than on this night than he is accustomed to. In response, Cummins found comfort up top that gained him a straightaway lead just prior to the yellow. Then came Aitken.
"I was being patient, not doing anything crazy, and all of a sudden here he comes, and I was like 'oh,' it's time to step it up a little bit," Cummins recalled. I just turned down and got him back. I could tell I was really going to have to step it up, and after that, I kind of moved my line around on the track a little bit. I moved a little bit more down to the bottom, then I got super tight, so I was grabbing shocks. Every yellow, I kept loosening it up, loosening it up. Even at the end I was still super tight."
For virtually the entire second half of the race, Cummins' progress was unimpeded at the front, and a watchful eye was turned toward the ISW title race. Point leader Grant, who had yet to finish outside the top-10 in his first 15 series starts to the season, was mired back in 13th. Simultaneously, Stockon was surging down the stretch, to 4th by Windom with three laps remaining and to 3rd two laps from the finish by Aitken, who began to run out fuel just prior to losing the second position to Cottle.
Cummins finished off his masterpiece with a 1.423 margin of victory in picking up his 7th career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car win, equaling the likes of Kevin Doty, Darren Hagen, Kenny Irwin, Jr., Doug Kalitta, Jim Keeker, Bobby Santos, Brady Short, Kevin Thomas, Bobby Unser and Josh Wise. Cottle, Stockon, Aitken and Windom rounded out the top-five at the finish.
Following a one-race winless "streak" in sprint car competition at Tri-State back in June, Cummins has since gotten off the schneid by picking up back where he left off, winning an MSCS race there on Independence Day Weekend, then winning Sunday night's USAC return despite having to search and find the winning combination throughout the evening aboard his Rock Steady Racing/Mid-America Safety Solutions - Greenwell Auto Body - Lucas Oil Center/Mach-1/Foxco Chevy.
"We didn't get that last USAC win here because of some motor problems," Cummins remembered. "We won the time after, although I didn't feel great, and even the beginning of the night tonight, I didn't feel like I normally feel here. We changed a couple things. Like in the beginning of the week, we'd kind of been trialing a little bit. Since COVID, we didn't really get any testing, really."

For Stockon, his raceday morning began at 6:30am watching his son, Parker, compete on a dirt bike in the 50 JR class of the Southern Indiana Grand Prix Series at Red Fox T-N-T in Tennyson, Ind. Young Parker finished second in the race that had a gate drop of 8:20am. Around 13 hours later that same day, Chase was back in his starring role behind the wheel, capturing his long-coveted Indiana Sprint Week driving championship in the KO Motorsports/Hutson John Deere - Ravens Manufacturing - AMSOIL/Velocity/Fisher Chevy.
"This is pretty sweet," Stockon admitted. "It probably won't sink in until tomorrow or Wednesday or something this week, but we're going to bask in the glory of it right now."
After nearly capturing victory at the Terre Haute Action Track in the previous Indiana Sprint Week race which ran to completion, Stockon and the KO Motorsports team, which he joined on a full-time basis just one month prior, bounced back with authority.
It was a week Chase classified as a trying week with the missed opportunities, both on-track and due to mother nature, despite being the only driver in the series to finish within the top-five in all five ISW feature races in 2020, a consistent run that made him the third-straight driver to win ISW without the aid of a feature win, and the 12th overall in the 33-year history of the series along with Randy Kinser (1988), Gary Trammell (1990). Bob Kinser (1991), Tony Elliott (1999), Levi Jones (2004-08-12), Robert Ballou (2015), Brady Bacon (2016), Chris Windom (2018) and C.J. Leary (2019).
"It's been a trying week for us," Stockon said. "This is a lot of redemption for us. We were really good here tonight, just trying to be careful and trying to win a race at the same time. It's all big picture for us. I got to thank my guys and everybody on the side of this car that made it all possible. I think it just shows how strong we are as a team. Nobody got down and everybody kept their chin up. We just powered forward."

Kyle Larson sets All Star consecutive win record with seventh victory at Knoxville Raceway
By Bill W. KNOXVILLE, Iowa (August 1, 2020) - Kyle Larson won his seventh straight Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 feature on Saturay night, setting a record with the series. The victory came at the Knoxville Raceway, where the Elk Grove, California-native swept the World of Outlaws weekend in June. Larson earned $5,000 for the win aboard the Paul Silva wrenched #57, and even lost a contact lens along the way.
The 25-lap feature was slow to get started. On the first try, Kasey Kahne got above the turn two cushion and slowed near the wall. Aaron Reutzel did the same on the bottom of turn one. Both visited the work area and returned to action.
The second try at green was no better. AJ Moeller broke his front end after contact with another car in turn two and slid down in front of the field. Fortunately, he didn’t turn over, or collect anyone.
Once green, it was for good, and Gio Scelzi took the early advantage ahead of Lynton Jeffrey and Larson. Brian Brown passed Kerry Madsen for fourth on lap two. Larson sized up Jeffrey, and took third on the third circuit.
Rico Abreu, who started thirteenth, shot from seventh to fifth on lap five. Brown claimed third from Jeffrey on the same lap. Abreu followed him into fourth a lap later.
Up front, Larson was gaining on Scelzi, and slid across turn four to take the point on lap eight. He was in lapped traffic a lap later, and by lap 12, had a straightaway lead. Brown and Scelzi see-sawed back and forth in a battle for second that saw three passes for that position until Brown claimed the spot with ten to go.
Abreu captured third from Scelzi and passed Brown in lapped traffic on lap 16. Larson’s lead over the three-way battle for second was over seven seconds by lap 19. Scelzi and Brown would return to battle, this time for the third spot, in the late stages.
Larson won convincingly over Abreu, Scelzi, who gained third on the last lap, Brown and Shane Stewart. Kerry Madsen, Cory Eliason, Davey Heskin, Ian Madsen and Josh Schneiderman rounded out the top ten. Larson posted quick time over the 46-car field. Heskin, Brown, Schneiderman, Hunter Schuerenberg and Moeller were heat winners. Scelzi and Jeffrey won the Dashes, Ayrton Gennetten won the C main, and Aaron Reutzel claimed the B main.
“It’s really cool,” said Larson of his record breaking seventh win in a row. It was his sixth career win at Knoxville. “I did read that earlier today, and it added pressure to tonight. Qualifying well is important in every format you run. It was a good solid night You could get that diamond going in one and two a lot. Even late, I could make time following the top all around. I lost a contact, so I couldn’t see as well as I needed to, but my car was just good and I had some lines working for me. I could make runs off of two and then slide them in three and four. The contact made it difficult. I hope I have a spare set in my bathroom bag!”

Kyle Larson celebrates birthday at 34 Raceway and secures 12th All Star victory of 2020
WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (July 31, 2020) - Celebrating his 28th birthday in a big way, Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson conquered Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 competition yet again, this time during a Friday night visit to 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa. The victory, Larson’s 12th of the season with the traveling All Stars, as well as the 21st of his career during Series competition, was accomplished from the outside of the second row, eventually tracking down race leader and evening pole sitter, Cory Eliason, just before the midpoint of the 30-lap program.
Larson’s trek to the front commenced right from the drop of the green. After powering into third on the opening lap, Larson utilized a pair of cautions, a red flag incident on lap four, followed by another slow down on lap seven, to keep the top-two in check, ultimately sneaking around Austin McCarl for second following the lap seven restart. Meanwhile, Cory Eliason was the man in charge, doing his best to run away in clean air.
Although Eliason’s pace seemed untouchable, lapped traffic created an instant roadblock for the Visalia, California-native giving Larson the chance to close the gap in a hurry. By lap 12, the lead pair were engulfed in slower cars. They raced nearly nose-to-tail throughout the twelfth circuit before Larson made his winning move the following trip around 34 Raceway. A slingshot move through turns three and four sealed the deal allowing Larson to drive by the Rudeen Racing No. 26.
Periods of even heavier traffic did allow Eliason to keep pace with the leader, but Larson’s move to put Zeb Wise a lap down on lap 16 ignited a feeding frenzy for the 2020 USAC Indiana Midget Week and 2020 PA Sprint Speedweek champion. By the time the final checkers were shown, Larson’s advantage stretched to just shy of five seconds. Eliason held on to finish second, followed by Tucker Klaasmeyer, Austin McCarl and Gio Scelzi.
“After that second restart, I knew that I had to try something to get around (Cory Eliason). I knew the top was there, so I just started hammering away at it,” Kyle Larson said in 34 Raceway victory lane, driver of the Paul Silva-owned/Finley Farms/Tarlton and Sons/Durst/Lucas Oil/Priority Aviation/No. 57 sprint car. “I think he heard me because I noticed he was trying to make himself wide to kinda screw up my momentum, but we were able to get by. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the weekend.”
Kyle Larson's All Star Circuit of Champions win streak now stands at seven, six occurring in consecutive fashion since winning Sharon Speedway's Salute to the Troops program on Sunday, July 12.

ATTICA, Ohio – Cap Henry and Travis Philo put on quite the show Friday, July 31 at Attica Raceway Park the final three laps of the 410 sprint feature. The duo traded sliders and coming to the white flag actually banged wheels with Philo nearly spinning as Henry drove to his fourth feature win of the year at “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speed plant on NAPA Auto Parts Night.
It was Henry’s 9th career Attica win in the Callie’s Performance Products 410 Sprint division and the sixth overall victory for he and the Lane Racing team in 2020.
“Travis is upset and I would be too. I got the wing so far back there I just couldn’t steer it. It was all my fault. I come up off the bottom there and that thing picked the front end off the ground and I drove him right up the race track. I feel bad for those guys. That definitely wasn’t my intention. I’m glad for my guys we finally won one. We had a couple of bad weeks there and everyone was getting down and frustrated. I’m proud I could finish this one off for them,” said Henry beside his Dragons Milk White, New Holland Spirits, Beer Barrel Bourbon, FK Rod Ends, Wings Unlimited, Kistler Engines, J&J Chassis, Linder Shocks, Simpson, Ballistic Designs, Big D’s Pizza, Lead Head Water Fowl, Geck Electric, Nemesis Designs #4.
“This is win number six for these guys already in the year. I’m just really grateful for Brett, Zack, Micah, Tess, Patty and everyone involved in this thing. No one ever gives up no matter how bad it goes. We didn’t finish four races in a row and those guys never quit,” added Henry.
Henry’s win coupled with a sixth place finish for point leader Chad Kemenah and a 15th place finish for 2nd place point driver Cale Conley will tighten up the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series (AFCS) Presented by the Baumann Auto Group.
Not to be outdone, the Propane.com/Dirt Nerds Podcast Late Models went green to checkers for their 25 lap feature and McClure, Ohio’s Rusty Schlenk threw a slider on race-long leader Ryan Missler to take the lead with just three laps to go and drove to his 28th career Attica win. He now sits tied with Doug Drown atop the division’s all-time win list.
“The car was awesome. Thanks to my guys for busting their butts. We lost something in this thing a couple of weeks ago and we’ve been chasing it. I think we finally found it…we had a bad shock. Car is back on point. That was an awesome race for Ryan (Missler)..that was his first race back this season and he ran a flawless race. He was carrying so much speed on the top and my only shot to get around him was to set him up and slide him and I had to wait for the lapped cars to get out of the way to do it. It all worked out,” said Schlenk of his Buckeye Concrete Coatings, Mullins Race Engines, Velocita USA, Domination Race Cars, VP Racing Fuels, Maga Lifts #91.
Defending Fremont Fence 305 Sprint Attica champion Jamie Miller dominated the 25 lap feature leading all 25 laps for his second victory of 2020 at the track and the 26th of his career, placing him in second on the division’s all-time win list.
Miller, the defending NAPA Auto Parts of Bryan AFCS Presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales, came into the night third in the AFCS standings but made up valuable real estate as point leader Matt Foos finished 7th with second place point man Steve Rando crashing in the feature.
“I don’t plan on quitting anytime soon so let’s see if we can catch Paul Weaver in wins here,” said Miller beside his Reedtown Tavern, Fostoria Mod Shop, Sloopy’s Pizza, Smitty’s Pizza, Phil Rister, York Carpet, Crown Battery, Schriner Farms sponsored #26.
The top five finishes in both the 410 and 305 sprint features each received a new Hoosier Tire thanks to Rich Farmer who owns the area NAPA Auto Parts stores.
Henry and Cole Macedo brought the field to green for the 30-lap 410 sprint feature with Henry grabbing the point over Macedo, TJ Michael, Shawn Dancer, Parker Price-Miller, Cale Conley, Chad Kemenah and Travis Philo. While Henry and Macedo pulled away, Michael was comfortably in third but a heck of a battle ensured with Dancer and Price-Miller for fourth with the later taking the spot on lap four.
The quick pace of the race got serious on lap 11 when Macedo attempted a slider for the lead but Henry was able to drive back by and maintain the lead while Price-Miller drove into third and closed with Michael, Philo and 13th starter and last week’s winner Buddy Kofoid in tow.
The first race stoppage came on lap 14 when Dancer tipped over on the front stretch with the running order Henry, Macedo, Price-Miller, Michael, Philo, Kofoid, Kemenah and Byron Reed. On the restart Price Miller and Macedo swapped the second spot with Philo and Michael also challenging.
Macedo’s tremendous run came to an end on lap 18 when he slowed with mechanical issues to bring out the caution. When the race resumed Philo drove around Price-Miller into second while Henry pulled away. The top three settled in for a few laps while the battle for fourth heated up involving Michael, Kofoid and Kemenah.
With six laps to go Philo closed quickly on Henry with Price-Miller, Kofoid, Michael, Kemenah and Trey Jacobs also closing. On lap 28 Philo executed a slider in turn four to take the lead but Henry crossed under in turns one and two to regain the top spot and the pair banged wheels in three coming to the white flag with Philo nearly spinning but gathering it back up only losing a couple of positions.
Henry drove to the checkers over Kofoid who got around Price-Miller coming to the finish line with Philo and Michael rounding out the top five.
The 25 lap late model feature saw Rob Anderzack and Mike Bores on the front row. When the green flew it was nearly catastrophic as Anderzack got all sideways in turn two but was able to save it while third starter Missler grabbed the lead over Anderzack, Tim Sabo, Bores and Schlenk.
Schlenk wasted little time moving into second on lap four. Missler continued to lead with Schlenk running right on his tail until they got to lapped traffic on lap 12 and Missler was able to drive around them to maintain the lead over Schlenk while a tremendous battle ensued for third involving Tim Sabo, Matt Irey, Devin Shiels and Ryan Markham.
Lapped cars racing side by side helped Schlenk to close on Missler with just five laps to go. Schlenk drove in front of Missler in three and four on lap 23 and held him off for the win. Irey, Shiels and Sabo rounded out the top five.
Brandon Riehl and Mike Moore comprised the front row of the 305 A-main with Riehl taking the lead at the drop of the green over third starting Miller, Moore, Logan Riehl, Kyle Peters and Seth Schneider. Miller slid into the lead on lap two just before a multi-car crash brought out the red. When the green flew so did Miller, pulling away from Brandon Riehl, Logan Riehl, Peters, Mike Moore, Schneider and Zeth Sabo.
A caution on lap seven kept Miller from lapped traffic but again when the green came back out he pulled away from Brandon Riehl while Schneider had worked his way into third and took second on lap nine. Miller’s lead was nearly four seconds when he got to the back of the pack on lap 13.
The final caution flew on lap 19 with Miller leading Schneider, Weaver, Sabo, Logan Riel, Peters and Kyle Capodice. Miller got an excellent restart and drove away to the win over Schneider, Weaver, Sabo and Capodice.

Kyle Larson pads All Star Circuit of Champions win streak with $26,000 Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race victory
PLYMOUTH, Wis. (July 30, 2020) - For the 11th time in 2020, and for the sixth time in as many tries, Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson is an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 main event winner, doing so in convincing fashion at the Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wisconsin, on Thursday evening, July 30. Scoring a monstrous $26,000 payday in the process, Larson’s Plymouth victory occurred during the second running of the Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race, eventually topping a stout field of not only traveling All Stars, but also full-time IRA Outlaw Sprint Series contenders, and a handful of regional and national invaders.
Forced to navigate slower traffic for much of his campaign around the Plymouth bullring, Larson was quick to prove he was the class of the field, utilizing the outside-pole position to hunt down pole sitter and race leader, Gio Scelzi, by lap 12, eventually running away to a near-two and a half second advantage by the end of 35 circuits.
“This feels really good,” Kyle Larson said, driver of the Paul Silva-owned/Finley Farms/Tarlton and Sons/Durst/Lucas Oil/Priority Aviation/No. 57 sprint car. “I had to earn it, for sure. The track was extremely technical and the curb wasn’t going anywhere. It made it trickier and trickier to run. The lappers were all so even with each other and I couldn’t get by some of them for such a long time. I really wasn’t sure how close second was to me, but once I got by some lapped cars, I was able to get a good rhythm going. This is such an awesome crowd. A big thanks to Kevin Rudeen and his entire family for what they do for this event. It’s not often that you get to race for this much money in a sprint car.”
After a pair of cautions during the initial start, one of which a red flag incident involving Austin McCarl, the third try proved to be the charm with KCP Racing’s Gio Scelzi earning the jump. The California hotshoe would lead the first six laps unscathed before entering traffic for the first time on lap seven.
The back of the field, mixed with an unforgiving cushion, proved to be a handful for Scelzi, as Larson quickly ran down the familiar No. 18 and was applying pressure by lap ten. Just two circuits later, it was Larson who was in control of the field, using a sleek move through the bottom of turns three and four to drive underneath Scelzi to lead lap 12.
By lap 17, the ‘Madman’ Kerry Madsen was the new man in charge of the runner-up position, wasting little effort to get by Scelzi before turning his attention to Larson. Despite a desperate effort by the Australia-native, Larson proved to be too much to overcome in traffic, solidifying his place in Plymouth Dirt Track victory lane with a three-wide move to put two lapped cars between himself and Madsen’s No. 2M.
“I don’t think I could have went many more laps,” Larson continued. “I was happy to see the checkers come out.”
At one point, Madsen was in striking distance, eradicating all lapped cars between himself and the race leader just beyond the midpoint of the 35-lap contest. Although unable to catch ‘Yung Money,’ Madsen held on to finish second, followed by Gio Scelzi, Dominic Scelzi and Cory Eliason
“During the middle stages there, things were really looking good for us,” Kerry Madsen said, driver of the Killer Instinct Crossbows No. 2M. “I didn’t force it with lapped cars probably like I should have. We had a great race car and the guys are working hard. I want to get some ‘W’s’ for this team. We have a long weekend ahead so hopefully we can climb our way to the top.”

The Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 will continue their four-race stretch with a visit to 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, on Friday evening, July 31. The evening’s main event will award a $5,000 top prize.

GRANT'S LAST STAND NETS FINAL LAP VICTORY AT TERRE HAUTE

Terre Haute, Indiana (July 29, 2020)........."I just ran every lap harder than the last one. I figured if I didn't get it done on the last one, I must need to run this thing harder. Finally, I worked my courage up to run it hard enough to finally get by him."
Those are the words of Justin Grant who capitalized on a pair of late-race cautions and an "overtime" period to score a last lap USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car victory Wednesday night during the Dorsett Automotive Don Smith Classic at the Terre Haute Action Track in round four of NOS Energy Drink Indiana Sprint Week.
A succession of unfortunate timing led to race leader Chase Stockon's ultimate misfortune in the final two green-white-checkered restarts. The last of which, Grant drove around Stockon in the second turn and raced to victory for the fourth time with the series this season, taking over the ISW point lead by a mere six points over Stockon and 10 points over 3rd place Brady Bacon with three races remaining over the next three nights.
"We want to win this championship badly," Grant exclaimed. "I want to win races, I like trophies, I like wheelies, bicycles, running above the cushion and I'm here to make money. This is how I feed my kids. This is how I pay my bills. This is my life. Fortunately, points and dollars earned correlate pretty closely. Tonight, the safe move would've been to run second. But, god, I love winning races. So, we said, 'screw it,' let's win this race. We were wide open above the curb getting in, wheelieing, bicycling, and getting trophies."
Taking a line a car width or two above Stockon just before the first and second yellow near the end of the main event, Grant wasn't able to get the oomph off turn two to make the move stick. The third time proved to be a charm, however, as the Ione, Calif. lived up to the refrain, "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again" for his 20th career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car win.
Stockon, the 2016 Don Smith Classic winner, led the opening lap of the 30-lap event before Bacon, himself a two-time Terre Haute winner with the series, charged to the point on the bottom of turn four on the second lap. Grant, starting 4th meanwhile, put his bid in for 2nd, riding the bottom rail between turns three and four to the runner-up spot on the seventh lap.
Bacon had upped his lead to 2.5 seconds when Max Adams suffered a flat right rear tire to bring out the yellow with 12 laps remaining. With the field bunched up for the restart, Bacon's lead wasn't long for the world as he slid through the middle of turn one, henceforth opening the door on the bottom for Grant to drive by while Stockon followed suit on the bottom at the exit of turn two to glide into second.
Grant's run up front was short lived as, just one lap later, Stockon stuck the bottom of turns one and two to snag the lead from Grant. Stockon extended his lead to three-quarters of a second, but that lead tediously dwindled when Grant closed to within a car length trying to make an outside pass in turn two, to no avail. At that point, victory was seemingly in the bag for Stockon as he rounded turn three only to find a yellow flag and the 20th place car of Nate McMillin spun backwards, facing his direction and in motion at the exit of turn four.
By rule, caution periods that occur on the white flag lap will result in a two-lap, green-white-checkered finish. Subsequently, second running Grant and now third-place Windom had an additional opportunity, much to the chagrin of Stockon. The restart was nearly identical to the final lap before the McMillin caution with Grant trying with all his might to get around Stockon who was perfect on the bottom line.
Just as Stockon began to exhale and a feature win seemed imminent, lightning struck again for the Fort Branch, Ind. native as he swept through turn three only to see the yellow once again for the spun car of Dennis Gile in turn two, running 15th at the time.
As the leader, Stockon had to be perfect, especially with the sense of not being able to see the angles of attack with which his closest competitors were utilizing behind him. In essence, Grant, in second, only had to be perfect just this once. After one lap of trailing Stockon around the half-mile on what wound up as being lap 31, Grant got a big run off turn four headed to the white flag.
Being stuck high in the crumbs on the exit of two during his last attempts there, Grant had an alternate plan.
"I entered below the lip and didn't want to turn over on the lip getting in," Grant recalled. "The only way this thing's going to work is if I run right over that lip wide open, get enough bite on entry and drive across the slick and get back to the good stuff off two. And, by god, it worked!"

With Grant tucked right behind Stockon at the start/finish line, the two tagged bumpers. Stockon, now possibly carrying too much speed into turn one, slid straight up to the middle, losing momentum and opening up the expressway at the top for Grant and the bottom for Windom who both raced on by for first and second, respectively.
Grant executed the last half-lap of the distance as the frontrunner, going on to win his second career series race at Terre Haute by a margin of two car lengths, or 0.257 of a second, over Windom, Stockon, C.J. Leary and Shane Cottle.
On this particular evening, the late cautions which caused misfortune and much consternation for some, happened to play into the hands of Grant who made his third and final effort the payoff pitch.
"Tonight, it played in our favor, but sometime this season, it won't," Grant admitted. "It's just one of those things. Tonight, it didn't play in Chase's favor, but at some point this year, it will. Like it or not, it's part of the game and you've got to play the game how it's played. We know what the gig is coming in and that's part of the gig. It doesn't matter if it's not your favorite part, it's part of it. And you've got to do what you've got to do."
In other notes, during Fatheadz Eyewear Qualifying, C.J. Leary earned his 27th career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car fast qualifying time, equaling him with both Dave Steele and Chase Stockon for 12th on the all-time list.
