Kyle Larson scores Dean Knittel Memorial payday at Portsmouth Raceway Park
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (July 11, 2020) - ‘Yung Money’ Kyle Larson was certainly ‘money’ on Friday night during the annual Dean Knittel Memorial at Portsmouth Raceway Park, not only scoring his second Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires main event win in four tries, but the Elk Grove, California-native secured $15,554 in the process, simultaneously bumping his 2020 Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 season win count to six.
Starting from the pole position by way of dash result, Larson was nearly untouchable during the 30-lap contest, escaping to a hefty advantage right from the drop of the green flag. The driver of the Paul Silva-owned/Tarlton and Sons/Lucas Oil/Durst/Finley Farms/No. 57 sprint car reached slower cars by lap five, and although a few near-close calls with lapped traffic may have forced Larson to tap the brake pedal, his momentum never shifted, still placing two to three lapped cars between himself and second-place running Aaron Reutzel.
The main event’s first and only caution, occurring with five laps remaining, did give Reutzel an opportunity to restart on the back bumper of Larson, but it did not matter. The Clute, Texas-native was forced to settle for second, followed by Brock Zearfoss, Shane Stewart, and Cole Duncan.
With all bonuses considered, Kyle Larson collected upwards of $18,000 at Portsmouth, as extra money was awarded for his respective dash victory, as well as his overall fast time during qualifying time trials and for leading lap 15 during the 30-lap feature.
“It doesn’t matter what kind of pace you set, Aaron (Reutzel) seems to find a way to match what you’re doing, so I was trying to go as hard as I could,” Kyle Larson said in Portsmouth victory lane. “It was good to hold on and get another big payday.
“I was hoping we weren’t going to catch traffic again, but we ended up reaching the back anyhow,” Larson said of his restart with five laps remaining. “But what makes these cars fun is that we don’t have mirrors, so it makes you a little nervous of what’s going on behind you. Just another great race car. And thanks to all of you who help out on this car. We certainly couldn’t do it without each and every one of you. And thanks to all of you fans. This place is really neat and I’m glad I got the chance to race here.”

BETTER THAN THE FIRST: Price-Miller holds off Donny Schatz for second career victory
Dietz Motorsports gets its first World of Outlaws win at 34 Raceway
WEST BURLINGTON, IA – July 10, 2020 – A second career World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win was in sight for Parker Price-Miller – along with a first career win for Dietz Motorsports.
With four laps to go in the 30-lap Feature at 34 Raceway, Price-Miller had a near two-second lead over 10-time Series champion Donny Schatz.
However, his charge went from attack to defense in a split second. He pulled a wheelie off the corner while trying to pass a slower car and when he landed the car’s mud guard got into a spark plug wire, killing a cylinder. His speed slowed. Schatz closed in.
The near two second lead closed to about three-tenths. Schatz, who hasn’t won since May and hasn’t finished on the podium in eight races, was just as determined to take the victory. And behind both of them was a hard charging Brad Sweet – the reigning champion and current points leader.
With a hurt engine and champions breathing down his neck, Price-Miller – in his seventh part-time season – showed the poise of a veteran, not letting the pressure corrupt his focus. Fighting to extract every ounce of speed he could from his ChalkStix #14 car, Price-Miller held off Schatz by 0.101 sec. at the line to pick up the Friday night win and $10,000 top prize.
“It’s amazing,” Price-Miller said about getting his second career World of Outlaws win. “It feels really good. The first one (at Tri-State Speedway in 2017) is always going to be special to me. Haubstadt, it favors non-wing guys, where I came from. To win here on an unusual track that all of the Outlaw guys are going to be good at and to beat Donny (Schatz) and Brad (Sweet) there on the podium is really special. Probably on top as my number one.”
Car owner and Crew Chief Philip Dietz was equally as excited to pick up his fist win with the team he co-owns with his wife.
“It’s pretty crazy to be honest,” said Dietz, who has two Knoxville Nationals wins as a crew chief for Jason Johnson Racing. “He ran a great race. I was getting nervous there at the end. I could tell he was down a cylinder… I couldn’t be happier. I wish my wife Brooke was here. It’s really special.”
Price-Miller and Dietz Motorsports had been finding consistency and building momentum in the past couple of weeks. They entered the event with four top-10 finishes and two top-five finishes in the last five races. Their speed continued into the event at 34 Raceway – the Series’ first visit back to the track since 2014 – with a sixth-place qualifying effort and a runner-up finish in the Drydene Heat Race and DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash.
Schatz won the Dash, but Price-Miller showed he was not going to let Schatz run away with is second win at the track by staying within reach throughout the six-lap race.
When the Feature went green, Price-Miller looked to have 10 cylinders under the hood of his Dietz Motorsports machine by darting around the outside of Schatz on the exit of Turn 2 with ease. From there, he ran away and never looked back.
A red flag at the halfway point for Lynton Jeffrey flipping terminated Price-Miller’s three second lead over Schatz. It proved to be a mere annoyance than true hinderance. Price-Miller picked up where he left off on the restart and drove away from the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing #15.
With nearly three laps to go, Price-Miller suffered the spark plug issue and found himself in Schatz's clutches. However, in the closing battle between David and Goliath, it was the Goliath who almost took himself out of the duel. Schatz jumped the cushion exiting Turn 2, causing him to get out of shape and make contact with third-place Kerry Madsen, who then flipped.
Down on power, Price-Miller had two laps to hold off Schatz. Fortunately for him, the field lined up single file for the restart. If they were double file, Price-Miller said he doubts he would have been able to fend off Schatz.
But after the green flag waved for the final time, Price-Miller did just that. Schatz snuck to his outside off Turn 4 and tried to charge his way past but ran out of time before the checkered flag was presented to the Kokomo, IN driver.
“That’s all you can do,” Schatz said. “We got a run at the green-white-checkered. He started to bobble a little bit and got us a run. Tried the bottom one lap and knew he was going to get protective the next one, so we just went for something and tried to guess. We got close.”
Schatz’s finish moved him back into second in points – now 114 points behind Sweet, who finished third.
Sweet earned the KSE Racing Hard Charger award for the second race in a row. He made his way from 10th to third – his 15th podium finish in the first 20 races and sixth in a row.
For Price-Miller, with his first win of the season and first with Dietz Motorsports now secured, he foresees more to come in the future.
“It’s just really hard to win these races,” Price-Miller said. “I haven’t really been in a consistent ride. I’m really happy with where I’m at. It takes consistency and to build a team around you. You just have to keep with those guys and more wins will come.”

COURTNEY CINCHES CORN BELT NATIONALS OPENER AT KNOXVILLE
By: Richie Murray - USAC Media
Knoxville, Iowa (July 10, 2020).........In essence, it didn't take long for Tyler Courtney to get to the front of the field in Friday night's Brandt Corn Belt Nationals opener at Iowa's Knoxville Raceway.
In another sense, however, the wait was more than long enough.
The 2018 USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car champion started 3rd on the grid for the 25-lapper, but instantly split between both front row occupants Wyatt Burks and Riley Kreisel through the middle of turn one, then powered off turn two and never looked back the remainder of the distance.
The Indianapolis, Ind. native admitted it's been a rough and tumble couple of months for him in both the midget and his recent dabbles in a winged sprint car. Yet, Friday night, he went to the well for a sterling performance in earning his 27th career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature win, tying Kevin Thomas Jr. for 17th all-time, and notching his first with the series in 2020.
It's something the 2018 Knoxville USAC Sprint winner considers a boon for both the morale and confidence for the Clauson-Marshall-Newman Racing team and his NOS Energy Drink Turbo - CSI - ZMax - Schoenfeld/Spike/Rider Chevy.
"(Car owner) Tim (Clauson) and the guys gave me a really good car tonight," Courtney exclaimed. "I love Knoxville Raceway. This place is awesome in a wing car, a non-wing car; I'd like to come here in a midget, a Silver Crown car, whatever we can get here, that'd be sweet. When you sit back and think of all the guys that've won here, we won here once, but to put your name on the list again is just really cool."
As Courtney stretched his lead out in the beginning stages, on the fifth lap, he encountered his lone hiccup of the night as he stumbled atop the turn four cushion, allowing second-place Riley Kreisel to close the gap. But he too would find a similar fate in the turn four fluff one lap later, causing him to hedge the pace a tad while Courtney opened the spigot once again.
On a lap eight restart, Brady Bacon began to position himself in a familiar spot at Knoxville as the Corn Belt "sweeper" from 2019 with a slide by Burks for third on the bottom of turn one, then initiated a reprise of the move again a lap later, similarly sliding by Kreisel for second.
Just after midway, series point leader Justin Grant elevated himself to third with a reminiscent turn one slider past Kreisel on the 13th circuit. Still, the 2017 Knoxville winner was more than a half-straightaway behind the two most recent Knoxville winners in Courtney and Bacon running first and second.
In traffic with nine laps to go, Courtney was scoping his way through traffic, attempting to slide Jack Wagner in turn one, but couldn't make the move stick, causing him to lose momentum and fall in line behind Wagner which allowed Bacon to chomp the interval behind Courtney to as close as it had been all race long.
Once Courtney freed himself from the shackles, Bacon became stifled behind a wall of traffic himself and lost valuable ground to Courtney just as he was prepping to pounce. Courtney jostled out of the pack and constructed another half-straight lead over Bacon with six laps to go.
With five laps remaining, the final yellow of the night fell for the stopped car of 2020 USAC Midwest Wingless Racing Association Sprint Car winner Don Droud Jr., who came to a halt above the turn four cushion. As a result, traffic was now crystal clear ahead Courtney as was the road for Bacon to reach Courtney with nary a lapped car nestled in between.
Courtney led the field low off turn four on the restart and remained about midway up on the front straightaway before darting back to the bottom of turn one to slide himself before Bacon ever had a chance to do so himself. With the slider attempt thwarted, Courtney expanded his lead to 10 car lengths over Bacon to put a "Fin" on this story for the evening while Bacon fought tooth-and-nail with Grant for second.
Courtney closed his latest triumph with a 1.105 second victory over Bacon, Grant, Chris Windom and C.J. Leary.

Tyler Courtney earned his 27th career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature win Friday night at Knoxville, tying Kevin Thomas Jr. for 17th all-time, and notching his first with the series in 2020.

Lamenting last year's results in the inaugural Corn Belt Nationals with 4th and 3rd place finishes on each of the two nights, Courtney has primed himself to rectify those past shortcomings when he straps on the helmet for Saturday night's $20,000-to-win finale.
"We came up a little bit short last year both nights, but we've put ourselves in a good spot for tomorrow," Courtney said. "We'll get through qualifying, our qualifier tomorrow, and hopefully be in the first couple of rows for the feature and try to take home some money."
For second-place Bacon of Broken Arrow, Okla., the bottom nor the middle of the racing surface seemed to be there for the two-time USAC National Sprint Car champion as he made his run at Courtney in his Dynamics, Inc./Fatheadz Eyewear - DriveWFX.com/Triple X/Rider Chevy for the lead in the later phases of the feature. For him to be able to get by Courtney, Bacon explained that his competition would've had to make a catastrophic mistake for him to pass, so he settled into second with the intention of not making any mistakes himself, though he admitted that he did became a bit complacent late and allowed Grant to pose a threat for the runner-up spot.
For Ione, California's Grant, his 3rd place result at Knoxville marked his 10th consecutive top-five finish in 10 starts during his 2020 campaign. Grant explained he became very tight near the end in his TOPP Motorsports/NOS Energy Drink - TOPP Industries - The Bow Foundation/Maxim/Claxton Chevy, getting noticeably tight on the curb, and didn't have nearly enough to make a move on Bacon stick for good.
C.J. Leary's Fatheadz Eyewear fast qualifying time earlier in the night was the 26th of his USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car career, tying him for 14th all-time with 2004 series champion Jay Drake.
Chase Stockon set a new 12-lap USAC National Sprint Car track record during the semi-feature at a time of 4:26.089, breaking the previous record at Knoxville set by Merle Bettenhausen in 1971.

Rico Abreu goes wire-to-wire at Muskingum County Speedway for first All Star victory of 2020
DRESDEN, Ohio (July 9, 2020) - Snapping an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 winless streak that dates back to Atomic Speedway on August 25, 2017, St. Helena, California’s Rico Abreu demolished the field on Thursday evening at Muskingum County Speedway, eventually leading all 30 circuits from the pole position to score night six of Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires.
Abreu, driver of the Rico Abreu/Curb-Agajanian Racing/Abreu Vineyards/Lucas Oil Products/Curb Records/Self Made Racing/Dancer Logistics/No. 24 sprint car, was just shy of perfect during his visit to the Dresden, Ohio, highbanks with his only defeat during the entire program coming in the form of a runner-up performance during his respective heat race. The now eight-time All Star Circuit of Champions feature winner, two of which occurring during Ohio Sprint Speedweek, set the fastest qualifying time in his respective group of qualifiers, and won the first of two dashes, ultimately setting up his pole position.
Eventually escaping to a comfortable margin of victory that reached nearly a full straightaway, Abreu did encounter some pressure during the non-stop 30-lap contest, most of which in the form of lapped traffic. Although reaching slower cars by lap seven, it was not until lap 12 when things started to really bunch up in front of the familiar No. 24. The high speed roadblock allowed fellow frontrunners Aaron Reutzel and Shane Stewart to close the lead gap, all within just a few car lengths by lap 15.
Although intense for a moment, the pressure faded just as rapidly as it started, as Abreu was able to patiently navigate slower cars and padd his lead to a pair of lappers by lap 22.
“Patience was keen there when we got to lapped traffic. You got guys like Aaron Reutzel, Shane Stewart, Kyle Larson behind you; you gotta really hustle it,” an elated Rico Abreu said in victory lane. “My car had a really good right rear squeeze to it, so I could carry a lot of momentum to the center of the corner then just kinda back everything up getting off. My guys did a phenomenal job. They worked all night long and made little tweaks every time we got off of the track. It’s all based on communication with them and making sure you’re giving them the right feedback. I feel like we hit all of our steps tonight.
“A big thanks to all of the fans for coming out tonight. It’s a Thursday night, so it’s great to see a healthy crowd. I’m looking forward to racing the rest of the week with the All Stars. It’s a lot of fun getting to race with them.”
Shane Stewart worked his way around Aaron Reutzel to claim second with two laps remaining. Reutzel, the current Ohio Sprint Speedweek points leader, maintained third at the final checkers, followed by Kyle Larson and Josh Baughman.

Kyle Larson scores Ohio Sprint Speedweek victory at Brushcreek Motorsports Complex
PEEBLES, Ohio (July 8, 2020) - Forced to settle with a hard charging performance at Wayne County Speedway after getting involved in a tangle during his respective heat race, ultimately rallying from 21st to sixth in 30 green flag laps, Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson bounced back on Wednesday night at Brushcreek Motorsports Park and leveled the field during night five of Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires, eventually leading 26 laps to claim a 14th-career Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 victory worth $5,000.
Lining up sixth on the main event grid, it was apparent from the start that Larson’s pace was unrivaled, utilizing his initial jump to climb three spots before crossing by the flagstand for the first time. By lap three, ‘Yung Money’ was powering by Eliason for second, next setting his aim on Vienna, West Virginia’s Cale Conley. Just two circuits later, Larson was in command, sneaking under Conley’s No. 3C as the pair raced through turns one and two.
From that point forward, it was all Kyle Larson at the top of the charts, easily navigating through traffic before escaping to a near-five second advantage at the end of 30 non-stop laps.
“I watched a little bit of video, but that was it,” said first-time Brushcreek competitor, Kyle Larson, driver of the Paul Silva-owned/Finley Farms/Tarlton and Sons/Durst/Lucas Oil/No. 57 sprint car. “It was a unique race track, for sure. I don’t think I’ve ever been on a track quite like it.
“My car was really good. I could run where everyone else wasn’t,” Larson continued. “All of the lapped cars were either on the bottom or the top, so I could stay relaxed knowing that I would have a lane open when I got to lapped cars. I started to get a little stressed late in the race. When you’re the leader, you never know where second and third place are. I knew (Reutzel) and (Abreu) would be there somewhere. There were some lappers that showed me their nose on the bottom. You just have to focus on what’s ahead and keep moving forward.”
Rico Abreu made a late charge to finish second at Brushcreek Motorsports Park, followed by two-time and defending All Star champion, Aaron Reutzel, Cale Conley, and polesitter, Cory Eliason. Abreu faded as far back as fifth before making the surge to second in the final two circuits.

Cap Henry claims Duffy Smith Memorial at Wayne County for second win of 2020 Ohio Sprint Speedweek
ORRVILLE, Ohio (July 7, 2020) - Becoming the first repeat winner of 2020 Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires featuring the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1, Republic, Ohio’s Cap Henry found himself back in the Speedweek limelight on Monday night at Wayne County Speedway, doing so by tracking down race-long leader, Cale Conley, and completing a winning pass with two laps remaining to secure the $6,000-to-win Duffy Smith Memorial.
Now fifth in the Ohio Sprint Speedweek standings, Henry opened the nine-race Speedweek campaign with a victory at Attica Raceway Park on Friday evening, July 3.
“When we took the checkered, I didn’t even know we took the checkered. I actually thought a caution came out and I started to get really antsy. Then, when Eric (Walls) came over the radio and said ‘top three to the scale,’ I knew the race was over,” Cap Henry laughed in Wayne County Speedway victory lane, driver of the Brett and Patty Lane-owned/Dragon’s Milk White/Beer Barrel Bourbon/Pro Auto Wraps/FK Rod Ends/No. 4 sprint car. “Man, I can’t thank this team enough. They presented me with an incredible opportunity a few years back and it has been great ever since. I’m happy we’ve been able to come out here and take advantage.”
Utilizing an inside-second row starting position, Henry, now a two-time All Star winner at ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval,’ was a contender right from the drop of the green, getting away third after the initial start before taking over second from Zeb Wise on lap eight. At the time, Cale Conley was the race leader, earning the early jump after starting second on the 30-lap grid.
Despite getting the opportunity to show his nose to Conley on several occasions, and having the chance to restart on the tail tank of the Vienna, West Virginia-native twice, once on lap ten and again on lap 13, it was not until lap 27 when Henry was presented with his first, true takeover attempt.
Throwing a slider that did not stick on lap 27, Henry made the next attempt work, this time using slower traffic as a pick to drive underneath Conley at the exit of turn four on lap 28.
“I could see the bottom was starting to come in there, so we moved down and I noticed I was starting to make some gains on Conley,” Cap Henry continued. “Even when we got to traffic there at the end, that groove was still working. It almost looked like Cale (Conely) lost his brakes because he was so committed to the top and wouldn’t come down.”
Cale Conley held on to finish second on Monday evening, followed by Rico Abreu, Jac Haudenschild and Justin Peck. Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson charged from 21st to finish sixth earning the evening’s Hercules Tires Hard Charger Award.

Aaron Reutzel scores Speedweek victory during second stop at Fremont Speedway
FREMONT, Ohio (July 5, 2020) - The third try was definitely the charm for Clute, Texas-native Aaron Reutzel, as the two-time and defending Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 titleholder finally cracked into the 2020 Cometic Gasket Ohio Sprint Speedweek presented by Hercules Tires win column, doing so with a victory at Fremont Speedway in Fremont, Ohio, on Sunday evening, July 5.
The win, the second of Reutzel’s career at Fremont, not only secured a $5,000 payday, but it ultimately furthered a Speedweek podium streak that already includes a third-place performance at Attica Raceway Park on Friday, July 3, and a runner-up finish at Fremont on Saturday, July 4.
Lining up third on the main event grid by way of dash result, it did not take long for the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports entry to find its way to the front, first sneaking by Paul McMahan to secure second after a restart on lap five, then taking command from race leader, Lee Jacobs, on lap 16. From that point forward, Reutzel was unchallenged, sailing ahead to solidify a 32nd All Star Circuit of Champions victory and his seventh of the season.
Nashville’s Paul McMahan chased Reutzel to the final checkers, followed by Lee Jacobs, Saturday night winner Buddy Kofoid, and Vienna, West Virginia’s Cale Conley.
“It’s pretty cool to win on a race track like this. The last time we won here, it was rough and heavy which is more my style,” Aaron Reutzel said, who now owns the Ohio Sprint Speedweek points lead. “This is as slick as it gets right here. Anything we had in our notebook, we couldn’t look at. We basically had to think ‘what would non-wing guys do’ because the wing really wasn’t working well.”
Although a contender from the start, a pair of cautions on lap five proved to be a positive momentum changer for Reutzel. Restarting in the third position, Reutzel quickly moved by McMahan to claim second, instantly applying pressure to race leader and Fremont Speedway track record holder, Lee Jacobs. By lap ten, Reutzel was all over Jacobs for the race lead, actually pulling even with the 1881 Racing entry on several occasions before slipping underneath Jacobs on lap 16.
Despite a third yellow flag appearance on lap 19, and a fourth caution on lap 24, Reutzel remained sound at the front of the field, never giving McMahan, who followed Reutzel beyond Jacobs for second on lap 18, an opportunity to capitalize. Even when Reutzel found himself entangled with slower cars during the final circuits, the two-time champ was untouchable, instantly separating himself from McMahan by two lappers.
“I can’t say enough about this Folkens Brothers Trucking, Fischer Body Shop, Dissolvalloy race team right now,” Reutzel continued. “Rough and heavy, slick; we just seem to adapt to anything and it’s pretty cool when you can do stuff like that. I couldn’t be more proud of my guys.”
The caution on lap 24 eventually turned into an open red scenario, which allowed the track’s ambulance to respond to a call in the pit area.
